Phoneme Awareness Procedure 1. Sing the lyrics on the next page to the tune of “London Bridge Is Falling Down,” targeting a single phoneme . (The melody is available on the internet . Or, simply chant the lyrics .) Model responses before expecting children to provide responses on their own . Take as many responses from children as you would like, and provide feedback to confirm or guide responses . 2. Sing the song several times, targeting a different sound each time . Differentiate or Extend ▲ If children have difficulty identifying the initial sounds in the words, exaggerate the initial sounds as you sing . Note: Say sounds without adding /uh/ (e .g ., /d/ might be said more forcefully or louder, but it should not be said duh) . Only elongate continuant sounds (e .g ., /m/ can be stretched to /mmmm/, but /d/ cannot be stretched without adding uh) . ▲ This song may also be used to target final sounds, which is a more challenging task . For example, ask children, “Who has a word that ends with /k/?” Provide examples . Children might respond duck, drink, pink, black, snack, Jack, and so on . Letter Connections ▲ Display the letter that represents the phoneme(s) you are targeting as you sing, making the connections explicit . ▲ Display several letters, and ask children which sounds they represent . Then, let volunteers select one for different rounds of the song . Who Has a Word? Objective Students will produce words that have target sounds in the initial or final positions .
