Phoneme Awareness Procedure 1. Tell children that you are going to say some words and their task is to determine whether they hear a target vowel sound in the middle of the word . Provide several examples . 2. Sing the lyrics on the next page to the tune of “Skip to My Lou .” The melody can be found on the internet . Alternatively, you can chant the lyrics . Prompt children to sing the first three lines with you . 3. After singing, say several words . Tell children to hop if the word contains the medial vowel you identified . 4. Repeat the song with additional words . 5. Use different targets with different verses as appropriate . Differentiate or Extend ▲ Stretch the medial sound if children need support . Vowels are continuants and can be stretched without distortion . ▲ Use the activity to target initial or final sounds . Letter Connection ▲ Display the letter corresponding to the target vowel sound . Hold it up when the word contains the target sound and children hop . Face it away from the children when the target vowel is not heard and children remain still . Hop to the Sound Objective Students will identify medial phonemes in words . Overview The teacher asks children to hop when they hear a target sound in the medial position in a word . The teacher provides words after singing new lyrics to “Skip to My Lou” with the children .
