While I write this, everyone is basking in the surprise sunshine we’ve been given in March (lucky things!) Lets hope it lasts well into April, for this month we have featured some great shorts and crops in our fashion pages for men and women, as well as some really quite stunning summer outfits in our fashion shoot. I can feel some summer wardrobe-shopping coming on… See page10 With people slowly edging out of their winter hibernation, there have been so many great events taking place across Sussex this month too. I always know that summer is on the not-too-distant-horizon when we start featuring sporting events or summer fashion shows in our Faces & Places pages…. The Martlets Fashion Show took place at The Boundary Rooms at the Sussex County Cricket Ground last month. Every seat was taken and male and female models modelled some really beautiful clothes by local shops on the catwalk. It was such an impressively professional show. What was also nice, was that there were categories to suit all ages and styles; from designer wear including Gucci and Dolce & Gabbana to swimwear by local brand Bugsy Pants and local boutiques including Tramp Vintage and Walk In Wardrobe. I’m looking forward to the next one (there’s rumours it may be in October! We will keep you posted, don’t worry.) Page 56 All proceeds from the above mentioned fashion show went straight to The Martlets Hospice in Hove; a place close to my heart, as well as thousands of others in our county. They helped my family and I care for my dear grandmother at home in her final days. Such a good charity deserves all the support and help it can achieve. And in these tough economic times, it can’t be an easy task, as Chief Executive of The Martlets Caroline Lower knows only too well. Celebrating their 15th year in business this month, Caroline took the time out of her busy schedule to share with our readers what sustaining and running this local hospice takes, and what their plans are for the future. Page 68 This month sees Tim Parker venture to the foot of the South Downs to Ditchling; one of the most beautiful villages in Sussex, it’s famous residents range from Dame Vera Lynne and Jamie Theakston to Raymond Briggs (illustrator of The Snowman) and Sir Donald Sinden. And you can see why they have chosen Ditchling. Picturesque, but near to the city centre of Brighton, it really is a gem in Sussex. Tim explores Ditchling’s impressive past including its interesting entry in the Doomsday Book. Page 54 Anyway, I better dash… my butler is calling (see page 46, and all will make sense).\ Wishing you a lovely month whatever you may do!

THE WORLD IS WATCHING... Stylist and designer Natalie Wileman sees the effect the upcoming Olympics is having on the fashion scene
L
“...the world’s focus has fallen on British bods. The pressure is on to look the part...”
iving in Brighton comes with many temptations, not least is the gorgeous window displays by Choccywoccydooda, that entice us in with their promise of edible chocolate shoes adorned in glitter. At Easter time, this temptation becomes almost impossible to avoid, as we nip in for a present for a loved one and leave 4 stone heavier having treated ourselves! Oh dear! In fact wherever you look this month there are naughty carbs hidden under the warm promise of a cinnamon hot cross bun smothered in butter, huge roast dinners and more chocolate eggs than you can know what to do with. This is a disaster for the Fashion-Easter (hehe) as summer is fast approaching, and bingeing on yummy foods this springtime will spell disaster for our bikini diets in preparation of summer holidays! Add to that the fact that the world, literally, is quickly becoming obsessed with this year’s Olympics being held in our own fair land, and the world’s focus has fallen on British bods. The pressure is on to look the part! Luckily it hasn’t escaped the notice of the world’s fashion designers either, who have taken this (the Olympics, not the eggs!) as inspiration for their collections this Spring/Summer and referenced sporty dressing throughout their collections. This spells good news for those of us who will overindulge this Easter. Take Victoria Beckham for an example; renowned for her impeccable style, featuring 6 inch heels as a minimum (even when holding her newborn, baby Harper) and this season she decided to not only accessorise the look with said baby, but also with baseball hats and slouch heels. Perfect for taking the focus away from our double chins and ‘swankles’
this summer. Or Dkny, who sent models down the runway in primary coloured oversized sports jackets, given the illusion of a well honed body underneath (but perfect in reality for covering our tums/bums!) Of course sadly when we think of the ‘sporty look’ images of Mel C from the Spice Girls, and even worse, Jazzy Jeff and Will Smith in 90s shell suits pop into mind. The designers, it seems, are also not exempt from this thought pattern. However, they are a very clever bunch who have managed to rework this styling into fabulous and glamorous day and evening wear that you will give you something other than that Easter egg to drool over! Isabel Marant seems to always know what will make us smile, and has sexed up the look with tie-dye mini dresses and oversized jackets. Kenzo showed more than a few sporty references with patterned shorts combos and bold colour blocking in reversible taffetas (the modern update on the 90s shell suit fabrics) and Hakan referenced the look with their use of aertex/laser-cutting techniques. So it seems looking the part is the easy bit. Of course, you could always take things to the next level and actually be the part, maybe join your gym (you know, the one you signed up for in January that has been taking money from your bank account ever since). Mine has a outside swimming pool and tennis courts so I can catch a tan and practise my poolside glamour over the Easter hols ready for the summer time! Well, swimming is in the Olympics right...? Happy Easter to you all. Twitter: @abfash Facebook: Absolute fashionista

Bohemia in Brighton
A press and VIP night was held in February for the launch of Bohemia, the new Grand Café and Late Lounge in the heart of The Lanes, Brighton. Entertainment was performed by the singing waiters fronted by Mark Lanahan, performing Bohemian Rahpsody, followed by Brighton’s very own Sinatra, Matthew VanKan.
Paul and Verity Craig, owners of Bohemia
Samples from Head Chef Adrian Geddes (formerly Blanch House and Graze) were circulated to the guests, who included VIPs, many of the EastEnders cast, number one selling author Peter James, Councillors Carol and Geoffrey Theobold, and many business leaders of the City. Quickly known as the place for outstanding cocktails, Bohemia also showed off some of its ‘molecular cocktails’ for guests to sample on the night. Bohemia was well received and looks set to be the place to enjoy breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea or just a very swanky high end night out in the city. Bohemia, 54-55 Meeting House Lane, Brighton.

ABSOLUTE COMMENT
What’s going on....?
BOHEMIAN BRIGHTON PJ, aka Peter Jarrette, Brighton’s favourite socialite, with the latest in great new venues, events and happenings
Dear diary
Pictures by Melissa Buchanan
Hello April. Do you come here often? It’s okay. Peter James I’m finished with March... but she was fabulous! March threw all she had at Brighton and didn’t disappoint. She even showed up early in February! Well she didn’t want to be left out of the solid evening of entertainment at Bohemia at the end of that wintery month now did she? Everyone togged up in their lovely evening outfits and sashayed across the red carpet into the city’s slickest social spot for the genteel gentlemen and ladies of Soiree City-by-The-Sea. Bohemia’s VIP’s were brought together by owners Paul Craig, Absolute’s editor Verity Craig and Paula Pearson and her team. It was a feat of inviting as there was a strict limit to the number of people who would be introduced to Bohemia’s charms on that VIP night. March must be very well connected! I barrelled straight into the best selling author Peter James on Bohemia’s Veuve Clicquot roof garden where we exchanged enthusiasm for hats. I also had a wonderful chat with Terrina Steel, fashion stylist and go-to socialite, and director Peter Mantle who posed for photos surrounded John Altman by LBDs and kitten heels. Downstairs business, fashion, media and TV people were treated to a variety of ‘air foam’ cocktails. Eastenders actor John Altman even showed a soft side as he admired the fresh floral arrangements dotted around the room. The cad! Also this month, my friend Lady Colin Campbell saw the release of her blockbuster global bestseller ‘The Queen Mother’ (Dynasty Press Ltd. London). This is a first ever behind-the-public-reputation depiction of one of the UK’s most loved senior royals that contains more revelations than one can shake one’s stick at (see page 26). At the top of March there was the whispered hub-bub surrounding artist Sara Abbott’s depiction of media figure Jodie Marsh as Boadieca in a huge painting displayed at the Thirteen Women collective art private view at Jodie Marsh by Sara Abbott the Jubliee Library. Apparently a famous glamour girl business woman of all our knowing, it was heavily rumoured, wanted to purchase this image of her media nemesis and hide it away from the rest of the world... ooh.... !
Mo Hunter-Shine says it like it is
Building shame
Back in February, my husband John and I spent the night at the Brighton Central Premier Inn. Its location and reasonable price were the reasons for this choice – its beauty and style were not.The accommodation was fine – a comfortable bed and polite staff. Clean and quiet. The corporate dullness of these chain hotels is something you expect, and they do serve a purpose. Lenny Henry, bless him, says in his advert for the chain: “Everything’s premier, but the price.” Sorry, Lenny, I would say: “Everything’s adequate but pretty dull, and the price is fairly reasonable!” But it is the exterior of the hotel that is my reason for writing. The entrance is housed along North Street – not one of Brighton’s prettiest streets – but the hotel itself dominates the street with a brutal and deeply unattractive building that seems to be a key feature of this chain.
“...there are other buildings that should be condemned and eliminated immediately, along with the architects who designed them” Close to where I live in London is the lovely Putney Bridge, built by Victorian engineer Bazeljet in the elegant style that pervaded Victorian construction. Travelling south over the bridge, you see the beautiful Victorian mansions over the other side. Majestic, elegant and a pleasure to look at. Travelling north over the bridge you will see the most hideous building on the right. It consists of a tower block, and a low rise portion. It looks like a prison with harsh, stained concrete, not a flourish in sight, and has some lilac coloured boarding at various places within the construction. It is the Putney Premier Inn, a horrible sight and a complete blot on the landscape. It isn’t the only horror in the area, there are other buildings that should be condemned and eliminated immediately, along with the architects who designed them. Brighton and London are similar in that they both contain some wonderful buildings and architectural gems, both grand and simple. These are what give the cities their character and history. Both cities also contain unpleasant reminders of the building of the sixties and seventies, when style and elegance went out of the window and was replaced with ugliness. It is possible to combine modern simplicity with style, as was demonstrated in the 20s and 30s with some of the lovely art deco buildings, so let’s hope we will now enjoy a new age of architecture, that combines functionality with beauty and - let’s hope the Putney Premier Inn has to be condemned!

Lady Gaga, and formally launched in March by the singer and her mother. Gaga has indicatd that the foundation is not meant to solely combat bullying (a favorite cause of hers) but rather to empower youth and promote bravery and self confidence. Good work, Gaga.
George in Handcuffs George Clooney was one of a number of protestors arrested in March for storming the Sudanese Embassy during a Washington demonstration. Among those also arrested alongside him were his father, Nick Clooney and Martin Luther King III. Clooney wants action to stop the brutal regime of Omar Al-Bashir, the Sudanese leader who has continued to push a war against the new nation of South Sudan. It has been a longtime cause for the actor, and his high profile is sure to draw attention to the plight of the Sudanese people. Celebrity at its best.

4 The Queen Mother Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother was called the ‘most successful queen since Cleopatra’ and the ‘best queen consort ever’. Even her arch-enemy the Duchess of Windsor wrote about ‘her legendary charm’ and when she died just a few months before the age of 102, she was covered in praise for a long life well lived. But there was another Elizabeth the Queen Mother behind the smiling granny. And the untold story of the life she really lived is far more fascinating and moving than the authorised version which has been
around for the eighty eight years since she became royal, and which has formed the basis of biographies written about her to date. Author Lady Colin Campbell has had exclusive access largely by virtue of being born into a prominent international family with royal connections, and having married into the ducal family of Argyll, which is also connected to the Royal Family. The Untold Life of Queen Elizabeth - The Queen Mother, by Lady Colin Campbell is out on 24th April 2012. Price £20. Published by Dynasty Press Ltd

SPLASH BACK Bathroom design is becoming more innovative than ever. Make sure you have the design tools to make your room just as you want it in a modern age
Be Artistic It might sound strange, but if you step back for a minute and forget that you are designing a bathroom, you could end up with a designer’s dream. So many people when designing their bathroom, think about it as the place you wash etc. However, using your imagination a little, you could end up with a truly beautiful room (we’ll get on to the practical side of things in a minute.) From introducing plants and paintings to ornaments not usually found in a bathroom, you could create a beautiful room; one to relax and unwind in. Speakers are also good to think about when planning your new bathroom. Music is great for relaxing to while unwinding in the bath, while the radio is great to listen to when waking up in the shower! This shouldn’t be a room shut off from the rest of the house- enjoy your bathroom and make it a work of art to be proud of!

Be Practical Too Once you’ve done the fun part of designing your bathroom, you need to then come back down to earth with practicality. Remember, this is a room that will be used a lot, and every day, so a good wear and tear unit and materials is of the utmost importance. It is no good designing a beautiful room that will look tatty in five months time. So, if longevity is what you are trying to achieve, invest in good quality products and also plan carefully where everything will be situated. For example, you won’t want a beautiful wooden vanity unit next to your sink where it will get splashed day in day out and become quickly damaged. Also, plan how much room you like between units and if there is a window, where you would like the view enjoyed from i.e. the bath, the shower or maybe even the toilet. A good practical plan is key to a bathroom that is great to use long term.
Colour and Design These colourful shower steam rooms (pictured in red) by Yilimeng are proving popular amongst professionals wanting the ultimate in modern technology and design in the home. Available in various finishes including orange and wood effect, they definitely add a touch of colour and pazaz to

any bathroom. It’s good to have a focal point upon entering a bathroom; these shower units certainly have that!
Tiles Tiles are a great way of making an affordable impact when it comes to bathroom design. They can add the only touch of colour to the room or can be a base subtle colour if the impact is elsewhere. Making sure you have good quality tiles is an important factor though. They can so easily make or break your design finish, so it is definitely worth investing in quality tiles and a quality tiler! ABSOLUTE

GET UP AND GO! Lack of energy can be a real problem for some people in every day life. So how do we increase it without turning to chemical induced options? Our health expert, Sheryl Waters discusses increasing energy levels naturally
A
fter enduring the long British winter, we’ve finally made it to spring. Phew! It’s time to get out of hibernation and get active. This is a great opportunity to look at our energy levels and ensure that we are at peak performance. You can benefit from the energy boost that various herbs, amino acids and other natural supplements provide. Natural Energy Supplements Ginseng is probably the most well-known energy boosting herb. It has been said to provide wisdom and enlightenment to the mind and vitality to the body. Ginseng is an adaptogen, which simply means that it helps the body in whichever way is most needed for increased balance. Studies have shown that ginseng improves aerobic capacity and work. Gingko is another very well-known herb. It is best known for improving memory and increasing stamina. In fact, various studies have shown that gingko extract has a positive effect on memory retention and can help prevent age-related dementia. A 2003 study showed that Rhodiola rosea can be used therapeutically for mental fatigue. Rhodiola rosea is an herb that is native to cold regions of the world. It can be drunk as a tea or taken in supplemental form. In the study, cadets between the ages of 19 and 21 were given either a single dose of rhodiola rosea or a placebo and then had their capacity for energy tested. Rhodiola rosea was shown to have a significant anti-fatigue effect.
“Studies show that people feel rejuvenated when swapping normal milk chocolate for raw chocolate with a high cocoa solid content that is made with a healthy sugar alternative” Aromatherapy Aromatherapy can also be useful for treating fatigue. The aroma of peppermint essential oil has the ability to increase alertness and offer the body some extra pep. Clove, cinnamon, lemon, cardamom, fennel, and angelica act as stimulants. CoenzymeQ is a vitamin-like substance which is necessary for healthy cell functioning. It is found naturally in high concentration in some 34
fish, grapeseed oil and sesame seeds. A 2008 study showed that oral supplementation with CoenzymeQ decreased the feelings of fatigue and increased physical performance during strenuous work. Get plenty of amino acids Amino acids are also key players in improving both mental and physical capabilities. L-ornithine is an amino acid that is not found in high concentrations in meat or fish. A 2008 study showed that people who take L-ornithine feel less fatigued after physical activity. L-arginine is another amino acid that has been shown to increase a person’s physicality and stamina. This amino acid is naturally found in organic raw certified dairy products, organic chicken, several types of seafood, wheat germ, chickpeas, oatmeal and nuts. L-tryptophan has also been shown to help improve physical performance and decrease tiredness. Tryptophan is naturally found in organic eggs, pumpkin seeds, cod, various organic meats, salmon, cheese made from raw milk, and perch. The chocolate factor Regularly consuming chocolate could be beneficial to those wishing to increase their energy levels and feel more alive. Studies show that people feel rejuvenated when swapping normal milk chocolate for raw chocolate with a high cocoa solid content that is made with a healthy sugar alternative. Dark chocolate is high in polyphenols, which has been shown to reduce blood pressure and balance the body. High polyphenols also improve levels of serotonin in the brain, which improves energy and vitality. Exercise While exercise can make you tired in the short term, it is vital for long term healthy vibrancy. If you want to feel your peak performance, a regular fitness regime is very important. Getting the heart rate up and your body moving will also have you looking your best for the summer, and don’t forget to drink plenty of water! Whether you are looking to increase your physical energy or your mental energy, natural products can add zest to your life.

ABSOLUTE DENTAL COLUMN
RESOLVE YOUR SMILE - IT’S SPRING! Dr Farrokh Sharifzad from Marina Dentalcare discusses the benefits of teeth whitening to brighten up your spring days
S
mile if you have let that New Year’s resolution slide! I like to think Spring is our second - and maybe best opportunity - to actually follow through with self improvements. If you have been meaning to get your teeth cleaned and whitened, spring is the perfect time. With the coming up of more events, weddings and parties, and generally we are outdoors more. If teeth are not heavily stained, significant improvement in their appearance can sometimes be achieved following a procedure as simple as a scale and polish from our dental hygienist, but for a greater springtime fresh look whitening is the answer. Whitening is among the most popular procedure at the dentist because it significantly improves the appearance of your teeth. How does whitening work? • Whitening procedures change your natural tooth colour, usually anywhere from five to seven shades brighter. In-office (chairside) whitening and at-home (tray) whitening both rely on bleaching. Bleaches contain an active ingredient, most often carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide in concentrations of 3-35% which helps remove both deep and surface stains. All whitening techniques work in one of two ways: • A light-activated whitening session in a dentist’s office, sometimes called chairside whitening, often results in instantly, dramatically whiter teeth. • Custom-made trays and whitening gel created by your dentist for at-home whitening, and you typically wear it several hours a day or overnight for two weeks. Some cosmetic dental practices
offer a combination of both methods to achieve a desirable result. Why should I whiten my teeth? Maybe you’ve always wanted a beautiful white smile. Or your teeth have yellowed over time. Or you’re not happy with the staining that results from drinking coffee, tea or red wine. Whatever your reason for wanting whiter teeth, you’re not alone. Just like we all have different hair and skin colour, people also have different tooth colour. Some teeth are more yellow than others, while others become yellow with ageing. Your natural tooth colour can also be affected by many factors. Surface stains and internal discolouration can be caused by: • The natural ageing process • Using tobacco (smoked or chewed), drinking coffee, tea or red wine and eating pigmented foods such as cherries and blueberries • Accumulation of plaque and tartar deposits • Trauma to the teeth that may cause a brown, gray or black colour • It is also possible to have stains that are inside the tooth. These are called intrinsic stains. For example, intrinsic stains can be caused by exposure to too much fluoride as a child while teeth are developing. This gives teeth a “mottled” look. Other causes include tetracycline antibiotics taken during the second half of pregnancy or given to children eight years old or younger, when the teeth are still developing. Tooth whitening is most effective on surface stains caused by age, foods or drinks.
There are many reasons for whitening your teeth, including: • The boost to your confidence and self-esteem that comes from a great smile • A younger appearance • A special event such as a wedding, job interview or class reunion • To make a positive first impression on others • To simply reverse years of everyday staining and yellowing Before beginning any whitening procedure, be sure to consult with your dentist. Only he or she can evaluate whether you’re a suitable candidate for a particular treatment. Is it safe? Yes! Whitening your teeth, under the supervision of your dentist, has been proven safe in clinical studies over a period of many years. Are there any side effects? There are a small number of people that could experience increased sensitivity to hot or cold during the whitening process. This is temporary and can normally be treated with ibuprofen or another product your dentist may suggests. The sensitivity will normally go away within first 48 hours after the whitening process is completed. How long does it last? The duration of your result depends largely on you. Long term results can be expected. Practice good oral hygiene and brush normally, especially after consuming staining foods and beverages and your result could last for years. If you use staining substances like coffee, tobacco, and red wine you may want periodic touch-ups as required.

simple tools at hand. The most important step for perfecting most styles is in the preparation and this is especially true for creating this look.
Get the look Step one: This look is all about the volume, so prep damp hair with L’Oreal Professionnel Techni Art Pli (£12.35) to help boost body. The spray is heat-activated so use it pre-hot styling to lock in texture and shape. Step two: Create a centre parting with your fingers, then heat up some Denman Large Self-Grip Hair Rollers with your hair dryer. Use larger rollers to create a more natural wave and add much needed volume at the roots. Step three: Remove the rollers starting at the base of the neck and work your way upwards. Back brush a little at the back of the crown to help create the illusion of luxuriously full hair. Step four: Add a glossy shine by rubbing some Electric Serum (£17) between your palms before smoothing down the hair. It also helps to eliminate flyways so use it on the ends too. s we approach May, our thoughts turn to gardening and the annual RHS Chelsea Flower Show. This year local award-winning garden designer, author, broadcaster and a familiar face at the show, Andy Sturgeon from Brighton, is back with a garden that has been inspired by Arts & Crafts houses and gardens all around the country. Andy Sturgeon says: “I’m designing one of the main show gardens at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show for the show’s sponsor, M&G Investments. The garden is inspired by the English Arts and Crafts movement, of which there remain some magnificent examples in all regions of the country. I wanted The M&G Garden to have a quintessential English aesthetic, so I’ve created what I’m calling a ‘New English’ garden: a contemporary take on the traditional Arts and Crafts ideals that celebrates nature and craftsmanship.” If you are interested in creating an Arts & Crafts or ‘New English’ garden follow Andy’s guide below. How to create a ‘new English’ garden by Andy Sturgeon • Design your garden in an asymmetric layout. Arts & Crafts was a movement closely inspired by nature: the layout should feel free, nothing too restrained. • I’m using a series of paths and terraces in The M&G Garden to create a series of garden rooms. Traditionally, these ‘rooms’ would be more formal close to the house and grow increasingly ‘wild’ as they move away from the house. • Define spaces with walls made of stone or brick and use them to frame details of the plants beyond, creating pictures in the garden. Always use local stone if you can for a more authentic look. • Utilise some of the familiar components of a traditional English garden with voluptuous borders set against formally clipped hedging. • Sculpture is a wonderful addition to the garden. I’ve commissioned a local craftsman to make a copper ring sculpture for The M&G Garden. • Use natural materials like copper, oak and natural stone. Keep materials raw. The Arts & Crafts Movement was all about ‘truth to materials’, so keep things rustic. • I like a soft planting palette against the hard architectural edges of the garden, so think cottage or country style and soft pastel colours to contrast with the rough natural stone elements. In The M&G Garden I’m using clumps of billowing perennials, domed umbellifers and clipped Ilex (Holly) in the borders.” For further Arts & Crafts inspiration in the South East, one of Andy’s recommendations is Standen House in Sussex.

ABSOLUTE RESTAURANT REVIEW
Rishma Patel relaxes at The Dyke Pub and Pizzeria, recently rebranded and refurbished
A
fter a hectic and tiresome week my partner Paul and I were looking forward to relaxing and spending some quality time together. As we both enjoy eating out we decided to pop over to Hove for dinner. We are huge fans of The Connaught and The Dyke, and we hadn’t been to the latter since its recent refurbishment and rebrand to The Dyke Pub and Pizzeria. It was early evening and already the pub was bustling with colleagues and friends catching up over a few drinks. The restaurant was also equally busy with families enjoying an evening out, mothers and daughters having a girly gossip and couples enjoying a romantic dinner. The atmosphere was lovely and full of laughter - a perfect ambience. Cat, our lovely waitress, was extremely attentive and friendly, and recommended a delicious Australian wine for us - The Spee’Wah Crooked Mick Viognier (£18.00). We opted for the Pan Fried Squid with Paprika Aioli (£5.75) to start, and the food came out in no time at all. The squid was beautifully presented with a lovely side salad that was dressed to perfection. The squid had a light crispy batter and beautifully tender, so obviously completely fresh. The Paprika Aioli added a lovely aroma to the palate. Delicious. The décor is lovely, probably best described as eclectic. It reminds me of a cross between a modern yet rustic farmhouse with very traditional elements. There are wooden logs stacked up high by the cosy fireplace, and we sat by a wall which reminded me of an Italian deli, with shelves of pasta, jars of olives and roasted red peppers. I was really looking forward to my pizza as there
is nothing like a homemade pizza, and a good one is hard to find. I ordered the Affettati Misti (£11.95), one of The Dyke’s speciality Pizza’s, and Paul ordered the Local Pan-Fried Sea Bass with Caponata (£13.95) as he isn’t a big fan of pizza. My pizza arrived on a large wooden rectangular board, the hand-stretched dough covered with mountains of quatro fromagg (four cheeses), prosciutto crudo, salami Romana, coppa smoked mountain ham and sundried tomatoes - finished off with fresh buffalo mozzarella, grand padano and rocket. It was scrumptious, the dough was lovely and light and each mouthful had a different taste with hints of blue cheese coming through, with the rocket adding a lovely peppery taste to counteract the creaminess of the cheese. Paul even managed to finish off the quarter that I couldn’t manage and said that it was the best pizza he’d ever had and next time we come he will be having one! I could tell that Paul was enjoying his sea bass, as he was silent bar a few oohh’s and aah’s! We cleared every morsel from our plates and with our bellies full declined on dessert. However, I did notice they have my favourite ice cream, Taywell’s Honeycomb, and the Double Chocolate and Orange Brownie looked like a good bet too. Maybe next time. The team at the Dyke are doing such a fantastic job, it is no wonder that it is so busy. If you are looking to find a great meal with friends, family, with your young children or partner, then I would definitely give The Dyke a go - you certainly will not be disappointed. I am planning my next trip already to try the Turkish pizzas!

ABSOLUTE HOTEL REVIEW
Art Deco Jewel As a Grade II listed hotel known equally for its history and design, Claridges continues to be one of Britain’s top five star resides. Our editor Verity Craig, checks in to experience some luxury in Mayfair
F
rom Winston Churchill to Jackie O, they’ve all stayed at Claridges Hotel. And in case you don’t believe these rumours, there are beautiful vintage photographs of such stars during their resides at Claridges adorning the walls of this magnificent Art Deco hotel in Mayfair. From the moment we stepped out of our London cab, my husband Paul and I were greeted and whisked into the beautiful foyer and reception. From then on (as if they are all connected via secret microphones hearing us state our names) all the staff used our names. There was no wait in the foyer either and no unnecessary forms to fill in (which can be such a chore when checking in to most hotels). Instead, we were immediately taken around for a viewing of the hotel, seeing the restaurants (one of which is Gordon Ramsay’s) and The Fumoir Bar (where Paul commented to the lady touring us that he had enjoyed a magnificent ‘Old Fashioned’ cocktail in there on a previous visit.) What strikes you upon entering in to the world of Claridges, is that it still has its classical values and feel; it’s to the highest standard but without the pretentiousness so often found in five star
46
hotels nowadays. Clearly they have no reason to put on an act and look as though they try hard. It has a timeless beauty, is comfortable and relaxed, yet this grand old lady still oozes something very special. It’s almost a contradiction, for while it is classically understated, at the same time it has an air of elite about it. You just know that you have stepped in to a very exceptional place. From our home in Sussex, it took us exactly one hour from door to door using the Gatwick Express, so visiting Claridges makes the perfect weekend retreat from our county; not too far, but at the same time far enough to fully relax and leave the outside world well and truly behind you. And relax is exactly what you’ll do, especially if you are as fortunate as us and stay in one of the beautiful suites. In our three-bedroom Linley designed suite we found ourselves having to do absolutely nothing. Not because we felt lazy, but because of our butler that had been appointed to us. Yes, all suites come with a butler who wants to do anything to make your stay comfortable and stress-free. From the first moment arriving in our beautiful suite our butler, a very sweet young
lady, offered to unpack our suitcases and crack open a bottle of Champagne for us. I declined feeling ever so rude if I were to let her, but was then reminded by Paul that it is actually in fact what they want to do (an episode of Downton Abbey sprung to my mind!) So, without hesitation I buzzed for our butler (yes, she had a pager) and asked her to book us some facials and massages. All was taken care of swiftly. Famous of course for its original Art Deco design, the hotel’s interior is a transient of classic Deco style, a fascinating history in the photographs on the walls and magnificent grandeur. The whole of the hotel is immaculately presented too; from its original old lifts and of course, to that famous sweeping staircase and black and white chequered foyer floor with column surrounds, there really are some beautiful elements that have been so carefully immortalised. After our bit of pampering in the spa, we retreated to our suite to prepare for dinner; the bathroom suite, in black and white tiling was really quite stunning - once again, from the taps to the sink, it was all Deco. Nothing reminded me that I was not in fact enjoying this in the 1930s. I

sat in my oversized Deco bubble bath pondering on which of the famous faces I’d viewed in the vintage pictures around the hotel had also enjoyed soaking in this very tub… Audrey Hepburn? Cary Grant? Brad Pitt? Bing Crosby? Or perhaps Sir Elton John? Dinner was in The Reading Room, a relaxed yet intimate part of the hotel, next to the foyer.
The famous Claridges Afternoon Tea is also served here. Greeted by our names once again, the service was friendly and efficient but not imposing. Headed by Chef Martyn Nail, the food is exquisite British cooking. Martyn heads up a team of 50 British and international chefs, some of whom I was informed have received awards for their country in international competitions. Needless to say, it shows in the food and the menu. Having indulged in our meal, we made our way to The Fumoir Bar. Formerly a ‘smoking bar,’ this bar is hidden behind an original 1930s Lalique panelled door; 1930s master glassmaker, René Lalique, was an original designer of this intimate bar. The original etched mirrors have been revamped with new Lalique-crystal panels and added sconces and a chandelier that are set against a dramatically ink-black gilt-stricken room. Lalique glassware complements the long list of fizz, swizzle, cup and julep cocktails. Steeped in history and exquisitely designed with aubergine shades and leather seating, this is one of my personal favourite cocktail bars in London. Behind the horseshoe bar, sits the Lalique glasses and crystal lights; all of course bespoke made for the hotel. We sat back and immersed ourselves with some 1930s inspired cocktails served in our Lalique glasses and forgot all about the world outside of Claridges. On returning to our suite we noticed a tray
that had been placed on the coffee table. Upon it were a few items and a scroll rolled up with ribbon tied around it. Excited and curious, we quickly opened it and read what I think is the perfect example of the quite astounding service guests receive at Claridges; it was a recipe and ingredients for an ‘Old Fashioned’ cocktail from The Fumoir bar. Having taken note of Paul’s passing comment when we were shown around the hotel earlier that day, the member of staff had sufficiently made sure we had it delivered to our room! Every ingredient was there and the recipe carefully typed out on how to make it. We were amazed! But then again, it is such touches that make Claridges as special as it is. It’s no wonder Claridges is head and shoulders above other five star hotels in the capital. This is luxury presented to its guests in a classical and timeless way, just as it always has been.

Turner painting of the city bought for Brighton & Hove went on public display for the first time in 100 years at the end of March. The watercolour, called Brighthelmston, Sussex, was bought by the Royal Pavilion & Museums service - part of Brighton & Hove City Council - at auction earlier this year thanks to funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Art Fund and the Royal Pavilion & Museums Foundation. The painting, which depicts Brighton from the sea, with the then newly constructed Chain Pier on the right of the picture and the Royal Pavilion at the centre, is on show at Brighton Museum & Art Gallery until April 22nd. People can now see the painting which has been in private ownership for more than a century. It will then go on to be the star attraction of a new exhibition at the Royal Pavilion next year.

In this Olympic year, Participate are
building on this success by expanding the series. Seven Cycletta events are being held across England, one of which will be based on Plumpton Racecourse and the surrounding area, inspiring more women than ever before to take part and by doing so supporting Cycletta’s Charity Partner, Macmillan Cancer Support. Riders will face a 40km safely managed route on quiet country roads, treat stops will be based along the route, and a pamper zone at the finish (in the Cycletta Village). The Cycletta in Plumpton will be held on the 30th September. For information about other dates and venues, and to register for the race, please visit www.cycletta.co.uk.

GET WALKING! A tour that celebrates Brighton’s oddities
H
ow little do you know about Brighton and Hove? Only In Brighton, a walking tour led by local tour guide and performer Ric Morris, highlights the lesser-known curiosities of the city. How many people know that George Everest – who gave his name to the mountain – is buried in Hove? Or that a song performed at the Brighton Dome helped trigger the Portuguese Revolution? “Brighton possesses so much that is distinctive and unique - a Green MP, the independent shops, street art, the gay community – I want to celebrate these alongside the quirky facts that this city so regularly throws up” says Ric about his tour Only in Brighton. Only In Brighton first hit the streets in last year’s Brighton Fringe, and it was so popular that Ric decided to continue it throughout the summer. This year the walking tour has been revamped with a new route and the number of walks doubled to twice-weekly, plus twenty tours in this year’s Brighton Fringe . Only In Brighton runs every Friday and Saturday evening at 7pm from outside Al Duomo restaurant, next to the Royal Pavilion, from 6th April. The cost is £7 (£6 concessions) and there is no need to book. More information at www.onlyinbrighton.co.uk or 07954 482112.

excellent value for money – last year Brits spent £2.4 billion on cruises. Luxury cruises also increased in numbers – up by 8% – as many more UK cruisers realise the benefits of taking a 6-star luxury cruise. Here at The Luxury Cruise Company our Hove office has never been busier, and we have had a record start to the year.
“...discovery cruising in 6-star luxury, with champagne served onboard to welcome you back after you have been penguin watching in Antarctica” Expedition cruises are gaining popularity too, and Silversea Cruises offer expedition cruises on their ice-strengthened ship Silver Explorer. This is discovery cruising in 6-star luxury, with champagne served onboard to welcome you back after you have been penguin watching in Antarctica. Silversea’s purpose-built expedition ship has been designed specifically for navigating waters in some of the world’s most remote destinations, including both of earth’s polar regions. A strengthened hull with a Lloyd’s Register ice-class notation (1A) for passenger vessels enables Silver Explorer to safely push through ice floes with ease. A fleet of Zodiac boats allows Silversea Expedition guests to visit even the most off-thebeaten path locations and an expert Expedition Team provides insight and understanding to each unforgettable Silver Explorer cruise adventure. There is no better way to visit Antarctica in such luxury than on a Silver Explorer expedition cruise. If you have any cruise questions or need help in choosing the right cruise for you ( we believe there is a cruise for everyone, as long the right person goes on the right ship) then please call us on 01273 311879

There was also Hilary Pepler who ran St Dominic’s Press, a key element in the success of the Guild which enabled members to circulate their ideas to friends and supporters. But it has to be said that for many years the Guild was a strictly male preserve where no women were allowed and inevitably some of the men took advantage of their authority in more ways than one. Despite inevitable ups and downs the movement continued until 1989 when the workshops were demolished, I am sorry that I never went to see them. A fashion show in aid of The Martlets Hospice took place in the beautiful new Boundary Room at the Sussex Cricket Club last month. The event was sponsored by Absolute Brighton and the lighting was generously donated by Showtec Lighting and Sound, and saw many models treading the boards to music from DJ Martyn Lambert. Clothes were displayed on the catwalk by Profile, Tramp Vintage, Box 2 - the local internet company selling a range of beautifully stylish clothing through to the larger sizes, Bugsy Pants, the internet sensation selling a new concept in swimwear mix and match bikinis, Walk in Wardrobe for fabulous dresses and The Martlets Charity shops with high quality second hand outfits. Organiser, fashion stylist Terrina Steel and her team, did a tremendous job and raised £1,500. Another fashion show is being organised for later in the year.

services provided in the home, has given patients more choice about the care they receive. Community support for the people with terminal illness has improved and GPs and hospital doctors are better equipped to manage symptoms. This means that more people can stay at home longer. It also means that patients who do come to the In Patient Unit at the Martlets are often in the later stages of their illness. They need more specialist support and assessment and an individual programme of care built around their needs.
