Brighton that our Faces & Places pages (often referred to as our social pages) arrive like buses; all at once. This month is no exception, for we have a plethora of parties, launches and fundraising events; it’s been a busy time for many out there. These are always very popular features! Keeping in the theme of Halloween, Tim Parker visited Preston Manor in Brighton this month. Known for its famous ghost stories and sightings, Tim also discovered its interior beauty is of contest with The Pavilion’s. He discovers the tale of its history and the Stanford family, who have had four generations live there. hurchill Square Shopping Centre will be taking the traditional format of a catwalk to a whole new level when it hosts Brighton’s first ever live interactive fashion experience. Models will replace mannequins in the shop windows, bringing them to life with a dazzling display of autumn/winter trends. Held on Thursday October 25th between 5pm and 8pm, and working with the producers of Brighton Fashion Week, the Churchill Square Autumn Winter Fashion Experience is expected to captivate attendees and present imaginative surprises on the night, including a celebration of Halloween with an on-trend nod to gothic and punk fashions. Brighton-based stylists will select outfits from a mix of Churchill Square’s high street and premium brands, which will then be categorised into five key autumn/winter 2012/13 trends. Guided tours give the public plenty of chances to learn of emerging trends from high street staples to luxe designer collections. Oh yes, my strong ones. My nationally released novel BRIGHTON BABYLON (Dynasty Press Ltd. London-international to Amazon for Kindle) arrives to our arenas and centre courts in March 2013. (That is if all the hubbub hasn’t pulled the date forward to December). I say hubbub, as I was asked to lunch in London at Soho’s Dean Street Townhouse to join my publishers at Dynasty (with Alice Whitney of London’s Creative Nation and the international award winning author and screenwriter Jody Medland, the MD of Pen Works Media), as adaptation has begun on my Brighton novel into comedy-drama TV series episodes for UK screens next year. The Sunday Times, London Evening Standard and Metro so far have sat up ready to give support to the stories of our city and its colourful people, as has the BBC Radio (Surrey and Sussex) and BBC Radio 4’s Open Book programme. Waterstone’s too is geared to wax lyrical on the outrageous tales of the town within the pages of this, my first of three coming novels. To augment the momentum we already have respected writers from No. 1 best selling crime writer Peter James to the UK’s outspoken pen swordsman Julie Burchill and a host of notables have written words of excitement for the covers and press with Ms. Burchill exclaiming that BRIGHTON BABYLON was the ‘Sex and The City for a new and funky generation’. The first launch party planned for Brighton will be... off the hook! Now Pup Aid 2012 delivered us all to London’s Primrose Hill as TV Vet and animal rights campaigner Marc Abraham drew hoards of two legged and four legged fans to help raise awareness of the cruelty of puppy farming. Marc had some sterling supporters showing up to throw their leads into the ring as spectators and judges like Queen’s Brian May, Ricky Gervais, Liam Gallagher, Girls Aloud’s Sarah Harding and the bright Jasmin Harman of A Place in the Sun. I judged Coolest Pooch and bagged film interviews with celebs which will be seen as part of the fly-on-the-wall With Jasmin Harman docu being made of me, my rise in the city and out across the nation by Andrew Collins and Melissa Buchanan as she joins Andrew’s 8th Tower Productions as executive producer of the as-yet-to-benamed project. And lastly I bumped into Brighton model Lindsay Fergusson on the fast train south after that business lunch, who told me of her international bookings and castings lined up and closer to home where she is the smile of Sussex’s Concordia Dental. takes the Sun. I like the Times, as it presents the news and intelligent opinion in a lively way, without the pomposity of some of the other big names. I also love their iconic crossword to keep the brain

cells ticking over nicely! I like the Sun, too. It’s easy to read, colourful and has some good columnists, like Frankie Boyle, (and some terrible ones, like Katie Price!) and the sports section is comprehensive. However, the biggest downfall of this paper, and the reason it (and others like it) has a reputation of being a rag is its terrible choices of front page news. Recently we had full front page coverage of an incident involving two ‘celebrities’ Cheryl Cole, and Will.I.Am. They were involved in a minor car accident going to McDonalds and there were pictures of the two of them with blood on their faces. The paper even saw fit to put another spread inside about this non-event. On the same day was the story of Simon Richardson, a gold medal winning Paralympic cyclist who was knocked down by a drunk driver in 2011, and as a result of his injuries was unable to take part in the London Paralympic Games this year. The driver was found guilty of dangerous driving and sent to prison. To me, this is an interesting story, one where we care about the victim. Simon suffered the trauma of a car accident in 2001, which left him with his disabilities, and he overcame these to become a gold medallist at the 2008 Beijung Paralympic Games. He was awarded an OBE for his inspiring achievements, and then a drunk driver took away his chance of appearing in his home games this year. I think this story is more worthy of the front page than a minor incident concerning a couple of overpaid non-entities from the world of ‘entertainment’, that most people haven’t even heard of, and the rest don’t care about. This is just an example of what we have to read about on the front page Bad news Russell Brand

Finally don’t give up, be determined and control your focus. The 23rd RAFA Shoreham Airshow, which this year celebrated the 100th Anniversary of the Central Flying School, was once again a brilliant success. The weather on the Saturday was fine and resulted in some stunning flying displays from all those involved. On Sunday morning rain and low cloud eventually gave way allowing for some first class display flying. The Vulcan was the highlight over both days causing the traffic on the A27 to come to a stand still doing some very low passes on the Sunday to escape the low cloud. Representatives from RAFA HQ attended over both days and all agreed that it was a wonderful event. Jane Easton Secretary general of RAFA said,”We do really need to say well done to all those involved in running this airshow. They are all volunteers and some are just local residents with no RAFA connections, who give up their time to make it a real family day out. “A big thank you also needs to go to Peter Eager and Don Bean, MBE, founder members for their efforts over the past 23 years. From humble beginnings has come one of the most popular UK airshows, which to date has donated almost 1.8m pounds to RAFA Funds.” Air Marshall Cliff Spink, this year’s patron said: “I have attended and flown at Shoreham over many years and in my view it is one of the best airshows in the country. It is a pilot’s favourite!” “Once we have had time to let the dust settle we will then decide what we plan to do for 2013,” said Derek Harber, acting airshow organiser.

to experience all of those wonderful sensations. Following the instruction from the tower ‘November, November’ gently moved forward as we rolled over the slightly uneven turf. At the end of the grass runway, we turned into the wind, and made a final check to ensure that we were ready to fly, and the Control Tower gave permission for take off. As we accelerated, I felt a slight rhythmic jarring as the wheels gently bounce off the grass. And then, it was suddenly smooth… we were airborne! The ease at which this old lady lifts in to the sky is truly majestic as we now made a right turn and headed towards Lancing College. The feeling of freedom was exhilarating. Gradually we climbed higher and higher. “Everything OK, Richard”? The first words I heard from Cedric in full control in the back seat. “Magnificent, absolutely magic, I’m living the dream”, I replied. “You have control, Richard” said Cedric. “I have control” I replied. I was flying the Tiger straight and level. Cedric asked me to try some turns, and some tips came through the earphones. The feeling of freedom is terrific. I asked Cedric to demonstrate a loop. It didn’t end there, for a further five minutes we danced through the air with such ease, a Lazy Eight and a Barrel Roll. What an experience, what excitement! It was now time to return to base and with no other traffic in the circuit we turned for finals. After landing, I stood alongside this queen of the skies, to notice the name emblazoned on her nose – ‘The Spirit of Pashley.’ This will be a memory that I will savour forever. t last I am about to realise a lifelong ambition. It’s now seven o’clock, I jump into the car and as I turn the key I can’t help but think that the next time I hear an engine catch, the sound of a Gipsy Major Engine will burst into life at Shoreham Airport. The de Havilland Tiger Moth ‘November, November’ lifted to the sky for the first time while Europe was still at war with Germany. The main role of the Tiger Moth was to train newly enlisted pilots to fly. She isn’t a macho fighter like her stable-mates; instead she is a skilful teacher. It was in a Tiger Moth that most British and Commonwealth Air Force pilots took their first tentative steps towards getting their wings. ‘The few’ that saved Britain and the free world during the Battle of Britain; the boys of Bomber Command, who flew night after night, through intense flak over Germany; the Dakota pilots that trudged their way to Normandy pulling gliders; the vast majority of these men began their flight training flying a Tiger Moth at an Elementary Flying Training School (EFTS). Ever since, this ‘Tiger’ has brought pleasure to many a thrillseeker who has wanted to experience the true sensual freedom of flight, and now, it’s my turn. Following my flight safety briefing, it was time to don the leather flying jacket, and put on a leather flying helmet along with some goggles. Cedric, my instructor, walked me out to the aircraft for checks, and I helped to conduct the pre flight inspections. I was reminded of the many details that make this biplane so distinctive. The Tiger Moth traces its origins to 1931. Essentially, it was a modified version of the Gipsy Moth which de Havilland had been producing since the mid 1920s. It incorporated significant improvement from its predecessor. In order to make escape by parachute easier for the instructor (who sat in the rear cockpit, surrounded my struts and wires) the upper wing of the Tiger was moved forward by 19 inches. The upper wings were then swept back to keep the centre of gravity within limits. To minimize the chance of a wing strike during crosswind operations, the lower wings were tilted upwards. With checks completed I was informed that we would be taking off on the grass runway so that this flight will replicate ‘Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines’. To fly in a Tiger Moth, is to travel back in time; back to an era when fabric-covered biplanes took off – not from long asphalt runways, but from pastures and meadows. Back then, flying was a feast for all the senses. You smelled fresh cut grass and oil on hot exhaust stacks; you felt the cool dampness of a nearby cloud. This particular morning, I was about

BOWLING IN HOVE!

Sussex Cheese Bowling Champions 2012

hree women have been declared champions, after 250 people competed in the second annual Sussex Cheese Bowling Championship, held at Hove Lawns recently as part of the Brighton Food Festival’s Sussex and the World Market. Thirty-two-year-old Lucy Shearman from Brighton was overall winner on the first day, and then Victoria Wilkes and Steph Tooley tied in the contest the following day, rolling their High Weald Dairy St Giles cheese balls closest to the big cheese target on a marked out green on Hove seafront. Said Paula Seager, MD of Natural PR, who organised the sport: “The Brighton Food Festival event was superb, attended by thousands and people got whole-heartedly involved with the cheese bowling with many staying to watch all afternoon. “We are grateful to The Southern Co-operative, who sponsored the event and provided lots of their staff volunteers to help run the contest throughout the weekend – it was quirky, fun and all about delicious local fare, with contestants taking home their tasty cheeses to eat later. We’ll be back next year!” The team also raised £364 for Chestnut Tree House, the only children’s hospice in Sussex, at the event, with Peter Allan from High Weald Dairy also donating his salary on the day as well. Winners will receive presentation boxes with a selection of the dairy’s delicious cheeses.

Once dismissed as simple peasant fare, then as food for the privileged rich, this mighty mollusc is now more widely available and is enjoying a renaissance. Oyster bars are popping up everywhere, oysters are featuring on restaurant menus and no food festival is complete without an oyster stall

C R U S T Y OY S T E R S Oysters in the shell, topped with fresh bread crumbs, grated Gruyere and chopped parsley, then cooked under a hot grill. Serves 4. Ingredients: 24 oysters 3 slices white bread, crusts removed 75g/3oz Gruyère, grated 2 tbsp finely chopped parsley Salt and freshly ground black pepper A few drops of Tabasco® Pepper Sauce Method: 1. First shuck the oysters. With your hand protected by a thick cloth, hold the oyster flat shell up. Insert the point of an oyster knife, or other sturdy thick bladed knife into the hinge of the oyster

- this is the thin, pointed end of the shell. Move the knife backwards and forward until the hinge breaks. Slide the knife under the shell to sever the ligament. Lift off the top shell, being careful not to lose and of the oyster liquor. 2. Whizz bread in a processor to make fine crumbs. Transfer to a bowl with grated cheese and parsley, salt and freshly ground black pepper. Stir well to mix. 4. Arrange oysters in a shallow baking tin. Shake 2 drops of Tabasco® Pepper Sauce into each one - or to taste. 4. Spoon around 2 tsp of crumb mix over each oyster to cover the meats completely. Place under a hot grill for 4 minutes, or until crumbs are crispy.

Oysters R oc k efeller Oysters Rockefeller is a suitably opulent recipe that involves sandwiching the oysters between a bed of sautéed minced spinach and shallots and a cheesy breadcrumb topping. Ingredients: 24 oysters 57g/2oz unsalted butter 4 rashers of streaky bacon crisply fried and crumbled 1 handful of spinach, finely chopped 11/2 tablespoons finely chopped parsley 11/2 tablespoons finely chopped celery leaves 11/2 tablespoons finely chopped spring onions 3 tablespoons dry breadcrumbs ½ teaspoon salt A few drops of Tabasco® Pepper Sauce Pernod or Pastis Ricard

Method: 1. Open the oysters, leaving them in their juices in their deep half shell. Detach them from the shell so they will be easy to eat. 2. Melt the butter in the saucepan and add the bacon crumbles, spinach, parsley, celery leaves, spring onions, breadcrumbs, salt and Tabasco® Pepper Sauce to taste. Cook the mixture over a low heat for about 5 minutes, stirring, until you have lightly cooked stuffing. 3. Divide the stuffing among the oysters, spooning it on top of them. Place in an oven dish on a bed of coarse salt to keep them steady, then either grill or bake in a pre-heated oven at 230ºC/ 450ºF/Gas mark 8 until the oysters are lightly brown and bubbling. 4. Before serving drop a few drops of Pernod on to each oyster.

PUMPKIN PASSION The Halloween favourite

Halloween Pumpkin Pilaf with Almonds and Greek Yogurt This is a quick easy recipe to make but the resulting dish is warm and comforting and is packed full of vitamins and goodness. Serves: 4 Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 20 minutes

THAI CHICKEN AND PUMPKIN CURRY Serves: 4 Preparation time: 20 minutes Cooking time: 30 minutes Ingredients: 1 tbsp sunflower or vegetable oil 1 onion, chopped 3cm piece of ginger, peeled and finely chopped 2 cloves of garlic, peeled and finely chopped or crushed 70g red curry paste 2 chicken breasts cut into bite-size pieces 1 medium pumpkin or butternut squash, peeled and cut into 2cm pieces 1 tbsp fish sauce 400g tin of coconut milk 200g pack Tenderstem broccoli 150g baby corn halved 1 bunch of spring onions, sliced Juice of 1 lime 1 bunch of coriander, chopped Thai rice to serve

Method: 1. Heat the oil in a wok or frying pan and then gently sautĂŠ the onion, ginger and garlic for about 5 minutes until it has softened but not coloured. Stir in the curry paste and chicken, and cook for about 1 minute. 2. Stir in the pumpkin or butternut squash, and then add the fish sauce, coconut milk and 200ml water. Bring to a simmer and cook uncovered for 15 minutes. 3. Add the Tenderstem, baby corn and spring onions to the curry and continue to cook for about 5 minutes until the vegetables are tender. Finish off by stirring in the lime juice and coriander before serving with Thai rice.

Ingredients: 2 tbsp olive oil 2 tbsp butter 1 onion chopped 3 cloves garlic 1 tbsp cumin seeds 1 tbsp fennel seeds 1 tsp black onion seeds 400g basmati rice 400g pumpkin diced 800ml chicken stock 100ml Greek yogurt 100g radishes sliced 100g roasted almonds crushed Small bunch mint roughly chopped Small bunch coriander roughly chopped 1 chilli chopped Salt and pepper Method: 1. Heat the oil and butter in a large saucepan with a tight fitting lid, add the onion, garlic, cumin, fennel and black onion seeds, cook for three minutes, stirring every now and then until the onions are translucent. Now add the rice and cook for a further two minutes until the rice has also turned translucent, stirring all the time. Add the pumpkin and stock, bring to the boil and turn down the heat to a gentle simmer. Season and place the lid on the pan and leave to cook without stirring for 10 minutes, or until all the stock has been absorbed, turn off the heat and leave to stand for five minutes to finish cooking. 2. Remove the lid and give a gentle stir. Top with a spoonful or two of Greek yogurt and scatter the sliced radishes and remaining ingredients over the top. Serve at once. www.loveradish.co.uk

Italian charm

Absolute Brghton’s Rishma Patel tries an Italian restaurant in the Lanes with a difference, Como

t was a late summer’s evening when my husband, Paul and I decided to head out for dinner. We drove through Brighton, which was bustling with people getting ready to enjoy their evening out, in bars, pubs and clubs. We wandered through the Lanes pondering where to eat taking in the ambience and diversity of Brighton, when we came across Como Cucina Italiana. The place looked classy, there were a few tables outside where you could settle down for a large glass of wine and unwind after a busy week, or dine alfresco. We stepped inside and were warmly greeted by Maurizio, our waiter for the evening. We had a lovely table in the window, perfect for people watching – a passtime that I love to indulge in. Como threw open its doors early last year and is the brainchild of Fabio Lauro, with a little input from his father. The restaurant is named after Fabio’s home town of Como in Northern Italy, where the concept was born: the idea for a restaurant with Italian fine dining; great food, amazing wine created with love, passion and soul, to channel the heart and soul of Italy. The menu reflects regional dishes within close proximity to Como and being an Italian family-run business, the food is all homemade, using the best local produce.

“The dimmed lighting with flickering candles created a very relaxing and cosy atmosphere, and there was a gentleman playing the guitar, showing how Como is very different from your average Italian restaurant!” We settled down at our table and perused the extensive wine list. I say list, it was actually more of a comprehensive booklet. Paul is somewhat of a wine connoisseur and he was impressed with the layout; it stated the variety of the grape used for each bottle with a brief description. The wines stocked are professionally selected to compliment and

intensify the food. Being in an Italian establishment and it being a light end of summer evening, we opted for Classic Italian white, the Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio. The wine was a full bodied white, dry but yet still crisp on the palate, with an intense aroma and notes of crisp green apple in each sip. Whilst looking at the menu our waiter bought over a lovely board of homemade bread, served on a rustic wooden board. Bread and real butter is rather naughty, but was very comforting and too delicious to ignore. It was a good selection of rosemary bread, oozing with flavour, walnut bread and other varieties. The food menu is comprehensive but still concise, and thankfully does not reflect your typical high street Italian chain. Waiter Maurizio is extremely knowledgeable about the dishes and explained each in depth and the region it is common in. I opted for the Polenta Grigliata from Northern Italy and Paul chose the Madaglioni di Astice. For our mains we opted for the Agnello ‘Avolta’ and the Aged Hereford Cattle Sirloin Steak. The décor is very upmarket; monochrome paint adorns the walls as a base to hang pictures of fashion models. Como is laid out on two floors, catering for large parties and providing an intimate setting for a romantic dinner for two. The dimmed lighting with flickering candles created a very relaxing and cosy atmosphere, and there was a gentleman playing the guitar, showing how Como is very different from your normal Italian restaurant! The place was beginning to get really busy with large groups, families and couples. Our starters arrived and the chef certainly pays a lot of attention to detail when creating his dishes. My Polenta Grigliata was sumptuous, a hearty brick of polenta perfectly chargrilled and topped with Taleggio cheese on a bed of rocket and beetroot crush, all served in a parmesan basket. The Polenta was of a good firm texture with a smoky taste, the oozing Taleggio cheese added a tang to the dish which cut through the sweetness of beetroot crush, and the rocket added a lovely pepper taste that bought the dish together well.

Paul’s Madaglioni Di Astice consisted of poached Lobster Medallions served with tomato gelatine, orange, lemon and mustard dressing and was a fresh clean dish, with three robust medallions, meaty in texture with a soft, sweet taste. One might think the citrus dressing overpowers the dish, but it actually lifts it into a clean, refreshing, light dish. Como Cucina Italiana is the flagship restaurant of Fabio. He has since opened Como Brassiere 1960 a few minutes’ walk away on Market Street, which is a more relaxed venue, serving good food any time of the day, from breakfast through to a late dinner, and the menu showcases French, Italian and Belgium cuisine. A speciality is that they also serve 50 European beers with their own draught beer imported from Lake Como. Our mains arrived, again beautifully presented. The steak was cooked perfectly to my taste, a wonderful piece of meat with an intense rich flavour - probably one of the best steaks I’ve had. Paul’s Agnello ‘Avolta’ must have also been fantastic as he hardly muttered a word until he had finished. He said the rack of lamb was succulent and juicy and had an exquisite flavour. It was served with a beetroot sauce and vanilla mash, yes vanilla mash! A smooth velvety mash with a hint of vanilla worked very well with the lamb,

and the earthiness of the beetroot. Normally, we would have decline on dessert, but as the standard of food had been so good we opted to share the raspberry ripple cheesecake and I am so glad we did. A generous slice of vanilla cheesecake was creamy, rich, velvety and perfectly balanced so that it was not too sweet. The only word to sum this pudding up is – heaven! The service at Como was exceptional, the ambience was perfect, and the food was incredible, all in all a wonderful evening. Fabio and his team are doing a tremendous job, it is no wonder they are continuing to expand their business. Everyone should have a taste of Como!

he Gold Run is a production inspired by the history of the Paralympic Games, and will be performed at the Minerva Theatre, Chichester, on Tuesday 30th October at 7pm, Performed by artists with learning disabilities, the show articulates the story of learning-disabled athletes who were welcomed into the Atlanta Paralympics in 1996, but later banned from competing when the Spanish basketball team fielded non-learning-disabled athletes. This production is the compelling response to this controversial history, fusing film, music and visual art, a 30-strong choir and a giant sculptural head, designed and created by James Lake. Gold Run is a collaborative arts project supported by Glyndbourne and delivered in conjunction with disability arts organisation Carousel and Pallant House Gallery in Chichester. Hurst Prep’s ground-breaking “Digital Pencil Case” initiative, has been causing a real stir in educational circles

urstpierpoint College has seized the opportunity to revolutionise how ICT is employed, embedding it as an integral part of everyday school life. Alongside Hurst’s ﬁrst-class teaching and learning practices, the most appropriate and effective ICT tools are now being used to support the College’s core aim of enabling each child to realise their full potential. How is this being achieved? From September 2012, every pupil in Years 7 and 8 of the Prep School and Year 9 of the Senior School has an iPad for which they take personal responsibility. This initiative will continue to roll on up through the Senior School over time. Pupils in Years 1 to 6 have ‘Learning Boxes’ containing an iPad, an iPod Touch and other devices in their classrooms to introduce their use as learning tools.

Mindful of the pitfalls of the internet, pupils, parents and staff have received guidance and extensive training in online safety and the appropriate use of the mobile technology. Year 7 and 8 pupils now employ ICT to become ever more resourceful and creative in their learning. They undertake a cycle of digitally based projects linking skills and knowledge being taught in the mainstream, subject-led, curriculum. The pupils use their iPads to plan and execute these assignments as a digital presentation, assessed both for the quality of subject content and ICT use. The speedy and mature response of the children to this initiative meant the transition from ‘new toy’ to ‘exciting tool for learning’ was brief. They are now making fresh and powerful connections in their learning and growing in conﬁdence in their own abilities.

I believe a single-sex education for girls is the best possible preparation for the challenges life will give them. We’re also a relatively small school where all the girls are ‘known’. Awards grants given to Five Local Charities

The chosen charities have been voted for by American Express employees, and the grants have been facilitated by Sussex Community Foundation, which operates throughout Sussex. Other recipients of the grants were Brighton & Hove Citizens Advice Bureau, which provides free, impartial and confidential advice, Burgess Hill based Windmills Opportunity Playgroup, offering care and education to children with special needs, Carousel, a Brighton based charity that works with children and adults with learning disabilities and Whitehawk Inn, that supports over 750 disadvantaged adults each year into learning and employment. Simon Chrisp, Vice President at American Express, said: “Our partnership with Sussex Community Foundation ensures that the American Express grants are awarded to deserving charities that make a real difference to the lives of the people they work with throughout Sussex.” Kate Davidson, Director at Relate in Brighton said “Relate Brighton Hove Eastbourne Worthing and District would like to thank American Express and the Sussex Community Foundation for their donation of £3000 to help provide specialist counselling for carers. “Unpaid carers save the public purse an estimated £119 billion, yet often they feel taken for granted or even invisible to the outside world. unday Times no 1 bestselling crime writer, Peter James, has been awarded the Sussex Police Outstanding Public Service Award. Peter was presented with the award by Giles Yorke, Deputy Chief Constable of Sussex Police. It was one of the very rare occasions that the award has been presented outside the police force. Peter says of the award: “Of all the awards I’ve been fortunate to receive, this one has a very special place in my heart.” Peter was given it for his outstanding contribution in helping the police through his research, writing and general contribution to the safety of Sussex as Patron of the Sussex Crimestoppers. Three years ago, when Peter was working on his 6th Roy Grace novel, Dead Like You which deals with the subject of rape, he was helped by the Sussex Police Rape Prevention team. Subsequently they invited him to join a think tank on the best way to get across the message

of the dangers of so-called ‘date rape’ to school children. They came up with the idea of a fifteen minute video, to be accompanied by lesson plans, and Peter wrote a script telling the story of three schoolgirls going to a party. By the end of the party one of the girls will have been raped by one of the teenage boys at the party who is then sent to prison. The title is ‘Rape - Short Word, Long Sentence.’ This Autumn the film was sent out to schools in Sussex, Surrey and Kent and is getting a good reaction from the schoolchildren who now understand more about the dangers of rape.

Thinking of renting your property? Make it legal, safe, clean and attractive, says Paul Cullip of Northwood Lettings

he demand for rental properties in the Brighton area is at an all time high with over 21% of all properties being let, twice the national average, so it’s a very popular area for Landlords. But Landlords have responsibilities; there are rules and regulations in place to protect both the landlord and the tenant so you need to make sure you comply before renting out your property. A risk assessment is a good place to start; it’s not compulsory but could save time and money in the event a tenant has an accident. Some obvious things to check for are fall hazards, property security, and electrical hazards. You can keep a list of any actions taken such as adding smoke alarms, banisters or extra lighting; just to be on the safe side. Energy Performance Certificates are mandatory and once you have the certificate it is valid for ten years. The report gives a rating for energy efficiency with “A” being the most efficient. This has to be

in place to market your property; a copy is given to all new tenants. The other mandatory certificate and by far the most important is the Gas Safety Inspection. It is a statutory duty to arrange an annual check by a gas safe registered engineer. A copy must be given to the tenant within 28 days of the annual check and a copy must be retained by the landlord for two years. Any reputable managing agent will take responsibility for making sure this check is carried out annually. Electrical wiring and portable appliance testing are also necessary. Now take a long hard look at the property itself. You want to attract tenants who will look after your property and it can be a false economy to skimp on decoration, flooring, cleaning and repairs; not just because you may end up with a void period but you are less likely to attract the best tenant, leading to issues in the future.

A new toilet seat and shower curtain can really help and are inexpensive. • Clean windows can add that extra sparkle. • A new coat of paint between tenancies always helps. • There are pros and cons to showing a property with existing tenants in situ. Some tenants are uncooperative and have a lot of clutter so it can be better to wait till they have left. • Make sure it smells lovely and air the property during viewings. • Remember curb appeal: if the outside is a mess then that’s the first impression! Flats in particular need to have tidy, clean communal areas. The next step is marketing the property and setting a rental price that is realistic and attracts the best tenants.
