Dear readers, over the next few months, you will notice some changes in Absolute Brighton Magazine. Editor/Founder: Verity Craig
Some of you will already know that last month my husband, Paul, and I successfully sold the title to Pinnacle Publishing. As part of this change I have decided to step back from the magazine after nearly 8 years of being at the helm, editing it since its concept. As co-founder of Absolute Brighton magazine too, I truly hope that the new owners and team involved will continue to maintain Absolute Brighton as the highly esteemed magazine it has been recognized
Founder/Ambassador: Paul Craig
as over the years; this has been largely due to the loyalty and support of you, our readers and advertisers alike. I would like to take this opportunity (with running the risk of sounding clichéd) to thank each of you sincerely, who have been our avid readers, advertisers and general ambassadors of Absolute

Brighton; you know who you are. I would also like to recognise my team, past and present. I have been fortunate to work with some fabulous and talented people over the years. My ‘right hand lady’ Mo Hunter-Shine, is one such person that springs to mind; she has been with Absolute Brighton since day one, always working impeccably and loyally throughout. So, it is with a heavy heart that I move on to pastures new, but at the same time with excitement. Your new Editor of Absolute Brighton will be Ian Trevett, who I have enjoyed working with in the past as part of my initial team on the magazine, and on previous titles together. I am sure that with me, you will wish him the best of luck as he takes over the exhilarating reins of Absolute Brighton.
EXCELLENCE IN VISUAL COMMUNICATIONS
Absolute Brighton and Pinnacle would like to thank the advertisers that appear in this publication for their support, and wish them every business success. The contents of this publication are believed to be correct at the time of printing; nevertheless, we cannot endorse, and readers should not rely solely upon, the accuracy of any statements or claims contained herein, without prior consultation with the service provider.
With thanks and goodbye,

Michelle could see a real gap in the market - somewhere was needed where you could buy beautiful hand-picked quality vintage clothing. The focus would be what was coming off the catwalks and into our shops - a place where vintage meets contemporary. Michelle made it her mission to find the equivalent original pieces from days gone by. She loves to source pieces, not only from vintage fairs and markets locally, nationally and abroad, but also to look to the vibrant community and local private clients to bring in their wares.

celebrate success Rockinghorse children’s charity celebrated five years since the new Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital (the Alex) opened its doors to sick children. Based in the grounds of the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton, the Alex offers pioneering paediatric care and is now considered a centre of excellence for the South, treating more children than ever before. Speaking at the five year anniversary drinks reception, Dr Oli Rahman, Lead Consultant for Paediatric Medicine, said: “The Alex is a fantastic building, but without the appropriate staff and essential equipment within it, the hospital is nothing more than a shell, so it is really important, in the coming months and years that we work together to ensure we are doing everything we can. ” Rockinghorse has helped fundraise for a number of key projects this year, including the dedicated children’s accident and emergency department.

Party season dresses
’m often booked for a shopping consultation to pull an outfit together for an upcoming party or event. I love nothing more than making a person sparkle and look amazing for an occasion, or every day for that matter. With Party dresses in mind I popped along to two Brighton Boutiques recently to see what they had in stock. I started off with Michelle who owns and runs Tramp on Trafalgar Street. She pulled out a bag of delights to show me, things she was just starting to put out in the shop. The collection she had was full of 80’s inspired vintage finds, lots of body cons, peplums, sequin dresses and an amazing harem jumpsuit. I found it so easy to pull together a whole outfit at Tramp, Michelle has everything there... earrings, belts, bags, coats and even some shoes. And I have to say at recession busting prices! As with all vintage shopping the fun is in the search. I found some real finds and developed a huge crush on a black dress with amazing chiffon sleeves; so unusual I’d know that I’d be the only person wearing this dress at a party and timeless too so I could go with it to many events. I met another Michelle at Pretty Eccentric on
Meeting House Lane, soon to be moving to Bond Street. Michelle has both designed and collated a fantastic collection of vintage inspired special occasion dresses. It’s a considered collection so you can match a perfect cover up to go with your dress, there’s also a huge selection of accessories, hats, bags and shoes. This shop is fantastic for all generations, they have younger labels which are perfect for proms and a huge selection perfect for older generations. Most of the collection is available in sizes 8-18. Michelle showed me the magic dress which gives you a waist, smoothes you down and gives top arm coverage! I’m so often looking for dresses like these for my clients. Also I thought the Harlow dress was fantastic as it came in two styles, so if you loved the dress you could get it in a shape that suited your figure best. I fell in love with the kimono jackets, lovely fabrics and print. I would love to have one in my wardrobe and I’d wear it with a silk vest and rock it up with my leather trousers. So when you pop into these shops just remember Michelles know what they’re talking about!

SCREENING AT NUFFIELD Opening of new Digital Mammography Suite by Dame Kiri Te Kanawa
Dame Kiri Te Kanawa with key members of the Nuffield Imaging team and Breast Care team
Dame Kiri with David Eglington, Hospital Director
T
o coincide with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Nuffield Health Brighton Hospital played host to word famous opera singer, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa when she opened their new Digital Mammography Suite. Dame Kiri cut the pink ribbon to unveil a plaque in the Suite before enjoying a pink champagne reception in the hospital’s impressive new reception area. She was entertained by a performance from the Actually Gay Men’s Chorus and Actually Gay Women’s Chorus and she helped draw the raffle, which alone raised over £300 for Breast Cancer Care. The new Philips MicroDose mammography system provides a more comfortable and relaxed mammogram experience for patients, with a lower radiation exposure. David Eglington, Hospital Director said: “We were honoured to welcome Dame Kiri to open our new mammography suite and raise awareness of the importance of breast health. Our new digital mammography system, coupled with our other state-of-the-art diagnostic services, ensure we are able to provide a comprehensive breast care service with quick and effective diagnosis for women with concerns about their breast health.” The hospital has also launched a pioneering ‘One-Stop Breast Clinic’ which enables women of Sussex to benefit from a fixed price breast consultation and diagnostic screening. The tests will include all required imaging and tests and with most patients’ results available on the day. Mr Eglington added: “Patients will have the piece of mind of having a set fee for a consultant led breast care services, regardless of the screening they may require and that means women in Brighton and Hove have more choice and will not need to travel out of area for quick, effective breast care service.” www.nuffieldhealth.com

ABSOLUTE INTERVIEW
Supermarket Superstar At 64 years old and with a career in Hollywood spanning over several decades, British actress Stephanie Beacham certainly knows how to turn on the glamour in roles when she needs to. However as Danny Masters discovered upon meeting her, Stephanie’s latest role has demanded a new image Stephanie with George Hamilton and Joan Collins
You play supermarket manager Lorraine in the new series of Trollied. Did you base her on anyone? I admit I looked up Dragon’s Den’s Hilary Devey on the internet. I don’t know anyone north of St Albans, so while it’s not meant to be Hilary, she definitely was part of the inspiration for Lorraine because she’s a great northern character. She’s a bit different from some of the more glamorous characters you’ve played in the past. She’s probably the nastiest character I’ve ever played and I loved it! She thinks she’s glamorous but she’s the sort of woman who does her mascara at the traffic lights. I normally spend a long time in wardrobe – but not for this role. I just had to undo one extra button on my blouse. And she swears so much. I said ‘monkey’s cock’ the other day! And she ‘bastads’ an awful lot too. What’s your supermarket of choice these days? I don’t like Marks & Spencer - they’re mid-ranged and over-priced. I much prefer either Harrods and Fortnum & Masons or dead cheap like Asda. Somehow we can’t see you in Asda. Do you still see Joan Collins? Yes we’re good friends. We had dinner not so long ago and Joan was laughing that we’re the only ones from Dynasty still working! We always had a lot of fun and laughter when we worked together on that show. Joan might have had the bigger shoulder pads but I had the bigger hair! 28
and persona for the former Dynasty star It was a surprise to see you in Celebrity Big Brother. What made you do it? I’m not ashamed to say I did it for the money. I turned it down three times and in the end they offered me such a ridiculous amount of money I would have been mad not to do it. Which of your fellow housemates would you take back in with you if you were to do it again? Ivana Trump! I liked her a lot. She’s terribly bossy but terribly well organised. She was also kind enough to invite me to one of her ‘65 homes’ in the South of France afterwards. Vinnie Jones was also good fun and very excitable. Were you surprised you lasted so long in the house? I was astounded because I thought I would last a day. I thought my demographic was such I’d be the first to be voted off. Incredibly, I lasted a month. Right from the start I realised the lighting was harsh and that I was going to look like shit so I thought, ‘Okay honey, just get used to it. You don’t know where all the cameras are so don’t bother to play for them. Just live. Just be.’ And it was amazing how enjoyable it was. It wasn’t hard; although, there’s much more bossing around from Big Brother than viewers realise. Your food is taken away, your bedroom locked and the temperature changed. You have to give up. It’s poverty, chastity and obedience… and it’s rather wonderful.
You still look amazing. But is it right you’re not a fan of Botox? Botox is fine if you like injecting cow poison into your face. It’s not for me but if you do it you need to get real and understand that you might keep your pretty face but your hands and knees are going to go anyway. In my profession it’s pretty shameful if you can’t raise your eyebrows! My advice is to keep slapping on the moisturiser and never ever go to bed without taking your make-up off. Do you ever google yourself? I’m afraid to say I have yes. I saw some alarming things that weren’t true so now I don’t do it as a rule. I did it just to see what other people were seeing.

ABSOLUTE INTERVIEW “She thinks she’s glamorous but she’s the sort of woman who does her mascara at the traffic lights...” (Stephanie on her new character) Do you use social media? Absolutely not. I wouldn’t go near facebook or twitter! Although I do get a friend of mine to spy on my grandson’s facebook just to find out how bad he’s being. But otherwise I’m not interested. It seems much more of an invasion than a connection. And I also cannot text. But I’m a good girl and do my emails, so I’m creeping into the 21st century. Is there anything about modern life that instantly turns you into a grumpy old woman? My pet hates are team sports and bad comedians. I love tennis, but when you get grunting men heaving around a field I am just without interest. So I’m afraid the Olympics held no interest for me. And I hate American comedians who shout. Jay Leno is just horrible. I hate his show and never enjoyed being on it. You’ve worked with all the big stars. Who stands out? Marlon Brando, Charlton Heston and Roger Moore. Roger was a dear, and he taught me valuable things about acting. Marlon and Charlton were real lifelong friends. And then there’s Bill Roache who I became close to in Coronation Street. As a human being, Bill is truly inspirational. Ever had any embarrassing moments with the stars? Oh many! I’m forever putting my foot in it. I remember going up to Antonia Fraser on a show we were working on and saying ‘Hello Marianne.’ I thought she was Marianne Faithful. And she didn’t take it at all well. That wasn’t a terribly good moment. Strictly Stephanie
You’ve been interviewed by the great and the good – who’s the best? Parky (Michael Parkinson) is obviously right up there and Jonathon Ross is surprisingly good. But Graham Norton is my current favourite. When I was first on his TV show I was bemused because I’d never heard of him. I got straight off a plane from LA, went in and was confronted by this extraordinary human being who proceeded to talk about my Playboy pictures 20 years ago! I heard afterwards that he said I was tricky but I think it was just that I hadn’t seen the show before and thought he was terribly odd. Since then I’ve been on his radio show and I like him a lot. He’s very interesting and gives you energy.
He doesn’t guide you, but he can see whether there’s light behind your eyes and whether to come in – especially on the radio. He’s one of the best interviewers around. As a renowned actress, is it acceptable behaviour to walk out of a film at the cinema if you don’t like it? I couldn’t give a monkey’s if it’s not acceptable behaviour. I did it last year. It was ‘Inception,’ that terrible thing Leonardo Di Caprio did. What a lot of old cobblers that was. I was up and straight out of there.

Adele Set To Take Abba Record Simon Cowell Can’t Get Enough Of ‘Placenta Facials’
The Official Charts Company in Britain has issued a
special report on the biggest selling albums of the CD era (October 1982 to today) to celebrate its thirtieth birthday. ABBA is the big winner over the last three decades as their Gold: Greatest Hits has sold four-million copies in the U.K. But whether it will keep that crown much
longer is in question. Hove’s very own resident, Adele’s 21 album is now the second biggest selling CD with just 400,000 copies behind. Both continue to chart in the weekly top 100 so a horse race could soon be coming. Meanwhile, Coldplay is the biggest selling artist of the era, scoring three albums in the top 30, with A Rush of Blood to the Head (number 13), X&Y (number 19), and Parachutes (number 21). Robbie Williams is the second biggest artist of the CD era, also with three albums I’ve Been Expecting You (number 25), Greatest Hits (number 26) and Swing When You’re Winning (number 27). The CD era in Britain, however, hasn’t been that kind to veteran artists. Beyond ABBA, the only other ones to make it are the Beatles.
Tom Cruises Uses Pseudonym Tom Cruise has recently revealed that he used a pseudonym to check into a British hotel. The actor reportedly checked into The Grove Hotel in Hertfordshire under the alias of ‘Cage Hunt’ in order to cover up his true identity. Guests at the hotel revealed that Tom couldn’t keep his secret for long though…. “Yes, Tom is using the name Cage Hunt, which guests are saying he has told them is his ‘porn star name,’” a source from the hotel said. “Tom has been a great laugh here and is really friendly to everyone. He has a great sense of humour.” Tom has been staying in Britain while he films his movie All You Need Is Kill.

Simon Cowell has apparently become hooked on sheep’s placenta facials. The 52-year-old music mogul who is already known for his eccentric beauty treatments, says apparently they are his secret to staying young. Sheep placenta facials require that an ‘aesthetician’ smear stem cells from animals raised in New Zealand all over the client’s face. Apparently Simon spends over £400 per session to benefit from the revitalising properties of the treatment, which is conducted at Beverly Hills Lancer dermatology clinic. “He loves it!” says a source. “Simon is forever trawling the health and beauty market, looking for all the latest fads. “He’s tried vitamin injections, drips, detoxes, smoothies, Botox and massages, but after reading rave reviews about placenta

ABSOLUTE COMMENT
What’s going on....?
MODEL HOUSES PJ, aka Peter Jarrette, Brighton’s favourite socialite, with the latest in great new venues, events and happenings
Dear diary I thought I’d mix it up a bit in the past weeks to see what other components make this one of the UK’s most liveable cities and therefore it’s been a busy few autumnal weeks. The art scene is resplendent as we know and the artist LEZ kicks off another of her few and far between exhibits on November 17th -30th at the Naked Eye Gallery, 5 Farm Mews, Farm Road, Hove. Stop in to see Pop Icons Of The 20th Century. One of the area’s driving forces for comfortable living is our comprehensive range of homes, flats and houses that afford the city great architectural contours. Those, and our beautifully tended gardens. I popped into two property-related events last month. Sean Toole invited me along to the Jury’s Inn to take a peek at the monthly seminars on the region’s property business. With his guest VIP speakers the events are structured to assist new investors in Brighton’s real estate market and to discuss how best to position yourself for the resurgence in the property market. We all know seminars and the such are not the natural domain of the mighty nor flighty socialite but Sean, who also works closely with the charity ‘Off The Fence’ did have some more familiar guests there like our well know woman of JAG, Julie Anne Gilbert and the bubbelicious artist Sonia Canals. So I had my share of socialite power mingling amongst our small group on the night. Ooh... Sean Toole’s puppy I learn is to appear on the next season of Britian’s Got Talent! Thought I’d pop that in. Investigate Sean’s endeavours at the Sussex Property Networking Club further at www.sussexpnc.com Dan Eddleston and Andrew Watson Another property night had my little brigade along to see the introduction and launch for Dan Eddleston and his business partner Andrew Watson celebrating the new Eddleston’s Property Management www.eddlestons.com. At this less business minded event my socialite traits were not subject to informative talks but there was wine. Wine warms so, as winter approaches, does it not? Lastly, Melissa Buchanan the photographer is spotting talent after talent as she has made models (see below) out of a grab bag of young faces for stills and filmed advert trailers for my novel Brighton Babylon and I think she’s the first one to begin a young model management company here with assured ties to London and abroad in TV, publishing and the fashion world. From strength to strength she goes. Check out her FB page young lookers for contact at www.facebook.com/MBuchananPhotography. Now, go buy a house! Facebook.com/peter.jarrette Buchanan models

Robby
It is true what they say about small packages. My husband John and I enjoy encouraging birds to visit our back yard, with seeds, water etc, put out for them. Some time ago, we noticed that even if there were not many birds on a particular day, one robin would always make an appearance. We knew it was the same one, as the poor little thing had a damaged leg that dragged behind the other. Robins are well known for being sociable birds and more daring than most others, and one day I was working in a corner of our little courtyard garden and I looked up and he was sitting on the fence less that a foot away from me. I had a real David Attenborough moment, as I was able to see every detail of this lovely little creature close up. He was even making a quiet little noise that sounded like distant birdsong. Later that day, John and I were both planting on the other side of the garden, and when we looked up he was on a part of the fence closest to us. We realised that, not only was he completely unafraid, he was actually seeking out our company! From that day, ‘Robby’ has become a regular part of our day. If either of us go into the garden in the morning, he is often there, and greets us with a little song. If he is not there, it is only a matter of minutes until he appears. He has trouble perching on our hanging bird feeder because of his damaged leg, so we put some seeds on a table for him, and he feeds there often, giving us more opportunity to enjoy our little friend close up. As I type, I can here him singing in the garden. We have had great pleasure from birds coming to feed, and seen some interesting types. As well as the lovely tits and chaffinches, we have spotted jays, a greenfinch, and on one occasion a woodpecker. But this is the first time we have actually forged a friendship with a visiting bird! For the last month or so, Robby has been part of our lives; we see him several times a day, and it would not be an exaggeration to say he has really enriched our daily life. It is worth remembering at this point, that not all birds fly to Africa for the winter. Many like the robin, stay on and you can help them get through the winter months by putting out water, seeds and other bird food. You will be rewarded with the sight of blue tits, great tits, chaffinches, blackbirds, robins, and possibly some more unusual species. You may even get the privileged chance to befriend a robin, and then you will have the ultimate prize. For advice on how you can help the birds in the winter, visit www.rspb.org.uk

THE BRIGHTON LINE!
Heritage Award for the Volk’s Electric Railway
T
he Volk’s Electric Railway has been honoured with a national award in recognition of its role as ‘an important and unique piece of UK industrial history’. Brighton’s iconic seafront railway has been chosen to receive the prestigious Engineering Heritage Award from the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE). The announcement means the Volk’s Electric Railway joins a list of less than 100 historic engineering feats from across the nation recognised by IMechE. Peter Williams, publicity officer for VERA (Volk’s Electric Railway Association), prepared the bid on behalf of the railway. Peter said: “The application was submitted in June and we’ve been waiting hopefully for four months. The result is a testament to the hard work of the staff, volunteers and supporters of the Volk’s railway. This is also fantastic news from an engineering perspective and shows how much Volk’s legacy lives on in our city.” A plaque will be presented to the Volk’s Electric Railway as a permanent symbol of the award. The date of the official presentation has yet to be decided. The proposed wording is: “Volk’s Electric Railway, Brighton. The world’s oldest operating electric railway. Constructed by pioneering electrical engineer Magnus Volk and opened on 4th August 1883, the line still follows much of the original route. The continued operation of this railway is a tribute to his life and work.” Cllr Geoffrey Bowden, Chair of the Economic Development and Culture Committee, said: “The award is well deserved and I congratulate all involved in raising the profile of this local treasure at national level. The Volk’s Electric Railway has enjoyed a fascinating past which is well worth celebrating. Brighton & Hove City Council now hopes to take the railway into the 21st century by making the Volk’s line the first solar powered electric railway in the world.” About the Volk’s Electric Railway The Volk’s Electric Railway runs along Brighton

seafront from the Aquarium Station, near Brighton Pier, to Black Rock - connecting the city centre with the marina. Trains currently operate from Easter to September. The railway was opened almost 130 years ago in 1883 by Magnus Volk, the engineer and
original owner of the line. Magnus Volk was a creative Victorian inventor, responsible for many imaginative schemes about the city. Brighton and Hove City Council has operated the Volk’s Electric Railway since 1940.

A WHALE OF A TIME! WhaleFest 2012 makes a splash!
A
lmost 6,000 visitors from across Europe landed on Brighton’s shores recently for WhaleFest 2012. Organised by Brighton-based whale and dolphin specialists, Planet Whale, the world’s largest celebration of wild whales and dolphins was a huge success, more than doubling visitors to the annual event. Backed by Visit Britain and Visit Brighton, WhaleFest 2012 offered a shoal of ocean inspired enjoyment for visitors of all ages. Held at the Hilton Brighton Metropole popular attractions across the weekend included 35 life size whales and dolphins, virtual whale watching trips, a try dive tank plus lectures by celebrity speakers including Bill Oddie and Mark Carwardine. WhaleFest also saw the launch of new campaign Save the Whales: Reloaded orchestrated by Planet Whale which attracted a crowd of over 100 people outside the Hilton, including Green Party MP for Brighton Pavilion Caroline Lucas. Marking the 30th anniversary of the moratorium on whaling, which was signed at the Hilton Brighton Metropole in 1982, the campaign is aimed at raising public awareness of the threats posed to whales and dolphins in the wild. Dylan Walker, co-founder of Planet Whale, comments: “We are absolutely thrilled with the record number of visitors that attended WhaleFest 2012. It was fantastic to see so many people, of all ages, enjoying the weekend’s activities and also getting involved with the more serious side of Whalefest by supporting Save the Whales: Reloaded.
“At Planet Whale we are working tirelessly to ensure the long term protection of whales and dolphins and, with the ongoing support of passionate visitors such as those we met at WhaleFest last weekend, we are confident we can make real changes to the prospects of these beautiful creatures in the wild. Following the success of this year’s event, Planet Whale has announced that WhaleFest will return to Brighton next year on 2nd-3rd November 2013. The event has also garnered interest from across the globe, with Planet Whale having already received approaches from the USA and Australia to take the exhibition overseas.

ABSOLUTE INTERVIEW
30 Minutes With Jamie Celebrity chef and laid back chap Jamie Oliver, speaks to Danny Masters about his Brighton restaurant, and why Christmas dinner isn’t all about turkey Do you ever pop into your Brighton restaurant, ‘Jamie’s Italian’, to keep an eye on things? I keep close tabs on all the restaurants but I’ve been so busy with my new book and TV series that I haven’t been to Brighton for a while. I’ve always loved Brighton though. That’s why I was so pleased we secured that location for the restaurant because there’s always such a good vibe in the Lanes area. I’ve got some great memories of the place and of course, my good mates Norman (Cook) and Zoe (Ball) are down there! Is it true, Norman’s a bit of a foodie? Yeah he’s no stranger to the kitchen! When I was in Australia I remember being woken up by him, phoning from his kitchen in Hove. He was 34

ABSOLUTE INTERVIEW
“ Turkey is great. But goose is absolutely spectacular and it also gives me time to open my presents and play with the kids. Sorted.” doing a recipe from my book and wanted to know exactly how much a ‘glug’ of olive oil was. Then in typical Norman fashion it all went surreal because his next question was, ‘Oh yeah, and another thing…. how do I cook a whole shark? I’ve got one hanging up.’ He wasn’t joking either. Have you ever done a shift in the kitchen of your Brighton restaurant? It’s an open kitchen so I’d get mobbed and noone would get any food. I can’t even go out for a meal anywhere else these days. It quickly gets boring for whoever I’m with because if someone wants an autograph or a photo I never say ‘no.’ Or if someone asks me cooking questions I’ll always answer them and have a chat. What’s the idea behind your latest book 15 Minute Meals? It’s all about super-fast cooking for busy weekday evenings. It’s aimed at people who buy expensive pre-packed processed food because they haven’t got a lot of time to cook in the week. What I’m saying is that this is actually less expensive, you’re not going to get fat eating it, here’s a few bits of kit and here’s the mantra which helps you rattle and roll when you’re pushed for time. After 30 Minute Meals, I realised they were more weekend meals with several elements to it. I know some journalists are going to say, ‘Oh you’ve just halved it. You’ve sold all those books and now you’ve just halved the time to milk it all again.’ And that is exactly what I’ve done but not
why I’ve done it. It’s all about enabling people to get some speed up and fit a quick, fresh and tasty nutritious meal into a busy weekday evening. Did the criticism you got from journalists who couldn’t make the meals in 15 minutes annoy you? It was frustrating that a 50 year old journalist attempted to do a recipe and then spent two pages slagging it off because they cut everything by hand and didn’t use a food processor which is written into the recipe and is the essential law of the book. It’s worth pointing out that nothing gets on the show or in the book without rigorous testing. We’ve timed OAPs and teenagers doing the recipes and we take all the comments on board. So much so that I’ve rewritten some of these recipes 26 times to get it absolutely bang on.
“On Christmas Day I want to have a wicked roast, great gravy, tasty greens, good wine and make the table look pretty” What’s your favourite recipe in the book? It’s so difficult to be objective. It’s like asking your missus what her favourite pair of shoes are! I suppose I’ve always loved beef stroganoff. But then there’s a lovely crispy duck with some great kick ass salads. With everyone feeling the pinch, how can we all eat more healthily on a budget? Some of the best food I’ve ever eaten has come from some of the poorest places I’ve visited. So you need to learn a few basic cookery skills – nothing majorly complicated, I’m talking kid’s
stuff really - and then have a crack at a few recipes for some inexpensive healthy dishes. Start with an omelette, it’s a beautiful dish, and eggs are very cost-effective. Add salad greens into your life. Or a little spinach wilted in a hot pan with a little olive oil and garlic. Christmas is fast looming. What’s the secret to cooking a good Christmas dinner? One of the keys is to go for an 8 kilo turkey! That’s as big as you want to go. I’d rather have two 6-8 kilo than a bigger one. The bigger they get the harder it is to cook them to perfection. Also, if you want crisp skin and delicate moist meat all the way through, you should stick to 6 kilos. Why do so many people struggle to cook turkey properly? It’s one of the harder meats to cook because of the weird shape of the bird. So it can go wrong if you don’t give it the love it requires. The trick is to keep it as simple as possible. On Christmas Day I don’t want to sit around all day reducing juice and de-boning whole turkeys and rolling them into something. I want to have a wicked roast, great gravy, tasty greens, good wine and make the table look pretty. But if you want an even easier Christmas Day, have goose instead of turkey. You can cook the goose the day before. Just pull it off and reheat it on Christmas Day and you’ll never know the difference. But for me, Christmas isn’t Christmas without turkey so that’s why we always have both a turkey and a goose. Turkey is great. But goose is absolutely spectacular and it also gives me time to open my presents and play with the kids. Sorted.

Wallpapers Make the most of your home with wallpaper that will add a touch of design and even art to your rooms. From big impact designs and colours, to embossed prints, wallpaper can be the most rewarding design choice you can make when making those home improvements. It can also be a hard task, since you are choosing both pattern and colour, as oppose to paint where you only select the latter. Points to take in to consideration when choosing wallpaper are: - Is the room it is going to be hung in, a wellused room? Will the wallpaper require a lot of wear and tear? - Bear in mind that the size of the room could be impacted by the wallpaper e.g. impact patterns could make a small room feel significantly smaller, while horizontal stripes

could make it feel longer. - A mood board is a good way to view on a small scale how your room may look when it is finished. - Consider the ceiling. If is coloured or ornate, you will need to select a wallpaper that will blend rather than fight with it.

We make sure you are safe in our hands and guarantee our work. We do everything, from the very start of the design process to placing the cushions and lighting the lanterns at the end. Four years ago Michael and Jane Keehan decided that old furniture had never been such good value for money while also realising that there was a trend towards painted furniture, and so they opened their small shop in Boundary Road. They came across Annie Sloan’s chalk paint which they found perfect for painting, and therefore transforming old and antique furniture. The paint was so good and easy to use they became Annie’s first stockist in East Sussex. They now carry the entire Annie Sloan range. Recently they have expanded and opened their second premises in Franklin Road, Portslade, full of antique and vintage furniture. Pictures Richard Bidwell

ABSOLUTE LIFE COACHING
PREPARE TO SIMPLIFY CHRISTMAS We all know Christmas is recognised as one of the most stressful times of the year. It should be a time for celebration, not frustration. Absolute Life Coaching gives advice on how to cope
H
ectic lives contribute to stress, so even the mere thought of Christmas can be distressing for busy people. So let us help you to simplify this special time of year so you can
enjoy it.
One of the ways of doing that is to change your mindset and keep telling yourself: its time for fun, relaxation and a break from the normal routine. Firstly, make a plan: 1. Decide where you are spending Christmas and who with; it’s such a simple thing but many people haven’t got a clue or are undecided as to ‘what is happening’ until the last minute. Buy your Christmas cards well in advance and address them straight away; have a goal to write and send them earlier than usual - that’s one thing out of the way. 2. Try to simplify present giving; many people are cutting down this year. Make a list of presents you want to give and keep to it. Start shopping now if you haven’t already. If you spot something suitable for someone buy it now and more importantly wrap it, label it and cross it off of your list – yes you’ve started! Try not to splash out on the credit card, this in the long term will only contribute to your stress.
advance to be delivered, and avoid the stressful busy supermarkets. If you have a freezer and enjoy cooking, nothing can be nicer than homemade mince pies etc. Make some items early and freeze. In the event you’re planning on going to a pantomime or special show, and the budget runs to it, stick to it, but remember to book now to be organised. 4. When catering for Christmas, decide on timing, drinks and menus. Start with the timing for the main meal and work backwards. Keep the menu plan in the kitchen; in the long term it simplifies the meal. Accept help, if you find it difficult having others in the kitchen when cooking then delegate them to clearing up and you can put your feet up. 5. Make a determined effort to enjoy Christmas and remember Christmas isn’t down to one person being chief cook and bottle washer. The Don’ts! Don’t set yourself unrealistic goals, re food etc. keep it simple.
“Remember relationships
can buckle under the strain of Christmas, so remain calm and enjoy it!” 3. If you are planning to entertain, decide on menus and write a list, itemise everything including drinks and snacks, order the food well in
Don’t drink too much alcohol, Christmas can be ruined by a bad hangover! Don’t be grumpy. Keep smiling - ‘fake it to make it’. Remember relationships can buckle under the strain of Christmas, so remain calm and enjoy it!
We wish you a happy Christmas, from Terrina and Georgina.

ABSOLUTE NOVEMBER
Ten things you simply must know a
November... 2 Movember 1Lighting Up On Thursday 15th November, this year’s Christmas lights are set to be switched on in East Street, Brighton. Between 5pm and 7pm, there’s a host of family entertainment to get you in the festive mood - with a Latin twist to spice up a cold November evening. The Christmas lights are paid for by the businesses of ‘Brilliant Brighton’ and this year they have invested even more to make them better than ever. Celebrate the start of Christmas 2012!
During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces in the UK and around the world. The aim of which is to raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and testicular cancer. The end of Movember is marked across the United Kingdom (and around the world) with a series of Gala Partés. This will mean seeing Claudia perhaps sing David Bowie or the Pet Shop Boys, which might be expected, but also Claudia maybe singing the Bee
Gees, the Electric Light Orchestra and The Band, which is less expected, and Claudia singing Stina Nordenstam and Stephen Duffy,. Claudia Brücken Brighton, Concorde 2 November 10th 2012 www.livenation.co.uk www.ticketmaster.co.uk

PARTY SEASON LOOKS
The festive season is the time of year when girls want to look their best, to feel
glamorous, preened and ready to party. It’s a great time to try out different looks so don’t be scared to ask your hairdresser for party season hair tips. If you need a little extra help most salons offer blow-dry and hair-styling lessons. This month I have put together three key looks that will see you through the season. Easy This look is perfect for all hair types as it is great for short hair giving a new dimension to your style and mid-length to long hair as it accentuates your face and can be created in a matter of minutes.
Medium
Pre Step: This look is best with freshly washed hair as you want a naturally high shine. 1. Start by parting your hair to one side, use straightening irons to achieve a really sleek affect. 2. Secure hair at the nape of the neck with grips if your hair is short or in a ponytail or bun for long hair. 3. For a little more drama, fix your sideparting with hairspray and add a high shine gloss.
Pre Step: Wash hair and blow-dry. 1. Back-brush hair. 2. Place hair into a high pony on the top of the crown. 3. Use the ponytail to create a topknot by looping the hair around itself in a circular motion. Keep this in place with grips. 4. Loosely pull out strands from the topknot to frame the face. 5. For added glamour add a sparkly hair brooch, clip or alice band.

types.
Pre Step: Wash hair and blow-dry. 1. Rub a little styling wax into your palms, then onto dry hair, part your hair slightly off-centre, then roll the front section of one side into a twist, pinning it against your head as you go. 2. Repeat first step on the opposite side. When both sides are complete, cross the twisted ends of your hair over each other and tuck them in, pinning any loose wisps against your head. 3. Secure your hair with plain grips to secure, then use a pretty hairpin to accessorize. Place it at the nape of your neck.

ABSOLUTE DENTAL
the dentist can save your life Dr Farrokh Sharifzad from Marina Dentalcare discusses the importance of being aware of changes in the environment of your mouth
M
outh cancer is the theme of the month being run by Marina Dentalcare, and all oral health teams throughout November. They key focus is for the early detection of the disease under the tagline of ‘if in doubt check it out’. The main aims would be to give information and advice, increase people’s awareness of mouth cancer and signposting to professional services. With our mouth we eat and drink what sustains us. With it, we communicate ideas and feelings to the world through speech or a simple smile. It allows us to taste the nuance of a fine wine, the sweetness of a freshly picked berry, or a mustard covered hot dog. Love or passion is expressed by it when we kiss a loved one or a child. When cancer affects our mouths, it does more than take away these everyday functions, it too often takes our lives. Through increased public and professional awareness, prevention through lifestyle changes, early detection initiatives, education, improved treatment modalities, and sponsorship of research, we can contribute to the reduction of suffering, permanent physical damage and disfigurement, and death caused by this disease. Oral cancer is the largest group of those cancers which fall into the head and neck cancer category. Common names for it include such things as mouth cancer, tongue cancer, and throat cancer. Oral cancer takes more lives than cancers we routinely hear about, such as cervical, Hodgkin’s lymphoma, skin (malignant melanoma), testicular, and many others. In the efforts to reduce the death rate from cancers, the most significant progress has been made through early detection. Cervical, skin, prostate, and others that lend themselves to simple, opportunistic screenings and exams have all had their death rates reduced through programs promoting early discovery.
Regular oral examinations conducted by members of the dental team will have a definite impact on reducing the death rate associated with oral cancer. Dental Team After an informed public that is knowledgeable about the risk factors for oral cancer, the dental community is the first line of defence in early detection of the disease.
“There are now more deaths from mouth cancer than cervical cancer or testicular cancer” It is important to realise that a visit to the dentist is no longer about a filling, a crown, or a cleaning, but is actually a matter of life and death. Dental examinations, when properly done and which include a screening for oral cancer, will save lives. Facts and Figures It is estimated that 6,000 people are diagnosed with oral cancer in the UK each year. Around 1,800 die from the disease annually in the UK - on average one death every five hours. There are now more deaths from mouth cancer than cervical cancer or testicular cancer. The five year survival rate for sufferers of mouth cancer is 50% . About 70% of mouth cancers are detected at a late stage, reducing chances of survival. Early detection and diagnosis improve survival chances to more than 90%. Early detection and treatment considerably increases survival chances and avoids the most radical and disfiguring surgery and results in a better quality of life for sufferers. Dentists are trained. and in the best position to detect the earliest signs of abnormality in the mouth.
Mouth cancer is more common in men than women, but the differential is closing. Mouth cancer is more likely to affect people over 40 years of age, though an increasing number of young people are developing the condition. Tobacco and alcohol are thought to contribute to 75% of mouth cancer cases. Smoking is the number one cause for mouth cancer. Cigarette smoke converts saliva into a deadly cell-damaging cocktail. Switching to low tar cigarettes will not help, as smokers of ‘lights’ tend to inhale more smoke than smokers of ‘regular’ cigarettes. Although some people believe that chewing tobacco is safer than smoking, the reality is that it is even more dangerous. Alcohol aids absorption of smoke into the mouth; people who smoke and drink alcohol to excess are 30 times more likely to develop mouth cancer. Research now suggests the human papilloma virus (HPV), transmitted by oral sex, could soon rival tobacco and alcohol as the main cause of mouth cancer. Poor diet is linked to mouth cancer.. Evidence shows an increase in fruit and vegetables lowers the risk, as can fish and eggs.
Taking action can be as simple as: • Checking your mouth for the warning signs – ulcers which do not heal within three weeks, red and white patches in the mouth and unusual changes in the mouth. • Visiting the dentist regularly for oral screening. • Cutting out risk factors for mouth cancer.

Your guide to using weights in your fat loss battle with fitness guru Livia O’Toole WHY WEIGHTS WORK AND HOW TO USE THEM IN YOUR FAT LOSS BATTLE Shock fact: We lose 1lb of muscle each year from the age of 25 and combined with the effect of the menopause, us ladies are fighting a losing battle, unless we increase muscle-mass and eat the right foods.. Lifting weights refines body shape, improves strength and posture and increases blood flow to bones and muscles, improving the health and appearance of our skin. Getting it right Weight lifting requires perfect technique and posture, crucial to improving your body shape. A good personal trainer will know this: 1.
As you lift weights, keep your shoulders back, tummy in and hips aligned with your knees and feet.
2.
You need to “feel” the muscle working – do not lock your joints and keep the muscle working within a safe and effective range for shaping.
3.
Gradually increase the kilograms that you lift - don’t lift heavy weights too quickly.
4.
Breathing out as a muscle contracts and in as it lengthens is essential - as the weights get heavier, you need to control your breathing to lift the weights.
A good programme includes cycles of differing weight, movements, repetitions and modes of exercise. It will consider your long term goals, will change every 3 months and will highlight specific details for each exercise/ set/ repetition. Weight training decreases body fat better than cardio of any kind. Generally speaking, heavy weights with few repetitions will enhance

your body shape and lighter weights with more repetitions will increase your muscular endurance, but won’t shape your body.

A lighter alternative to traditional mince pies, these simple tarts combine melt in the mouth pastry filled with fresh apples and mincemeat to give a fresh twist to a Christmas classic Makes 12 Preparation time: 30 minutes Cooking time: 15-20 minutes Ingredients: 1 x 375 g pack ready rolled sweet shortcrust pastry 200g mincemeat 1 Pink Lady Apple, cored and diced 25g dried cranberries Icing sugar to dust Method: Preheat the oven to 200°C/400°F. Unroll the pastry onto a clean board. Using a 7 cm cutter stamp out 12 circles and use to line a bun tin. Put in the fridge for 30 minutes.
Reserve the pastry trimmings. Meanwhile in a bowl mix together the mincemeat, diced apple and dried cranberries. Spoon a little of the apple mincemeat into each pastry case. Using the pastry trimmings stamp out 12 small star or heart shapes. Put a star or heart on the top of each mincemeat tart. Bake in the oven for 15- 20 minutes until lightly golden and cooked. Leave to cool for 5 minutes then transfer to a wire rack and dust with icing sugar. Serve warm or cold. www.pinkladyapples.co.uk
Christmas Brownies Makes 16 brownies Preparation time: 10-15 minutes Cooking Time: 30 minutes Ingredients: 250g dark chocolate (70% cocoa solids) 100g butter, plus a little extra for greasing the tin 250g cooked beetroot, drained 3 eggs 250g light brown sugar 150g ground almonds 2 tbsp cocoa powder 1 tsp baking powder 1 tsp vanilla extract 1 tsp cayenne pepper powder (optional) Icing sugar, to dust Method: 1. Preheat the oven to 180°C. Prepare a 23cm square baking tin by greasing all over with a little butter. Line with a wide strip of baking paper, leaving two ‘tails’ at either side to help you lift the cooked brownie out of the tin. 2. Break up the chocolate into squares and put into a heatproof bowl along with the butter. Set over a pan of barely
simmering water and allow to gently melt, stirring to mix together as it does so. 3. Tip the beetroot into a food processor and process to a puree, pausing the motor to scrape down the sides if necessary. Add the melted chocolate and butter and the eggs and whizz again until combined. Again, scrape the sides down, then add the sugar, ground almonds, cocoa, baking powder and chilli powder (if using) and process until you have a smooth batter. 4. Pour into the prepared baking tin and bake for about 30 minutes until the top is set and the brownie is starting to pull a little away from the sides of the tin. A skew inserted into the centre with come out fairly clean but stick a touch sticky don’t worry if it still seems a little soft as it will firm up on cooling. Remove from the oven, place on a cooling rack and allow to go cold in the tin. 5. Using the baking paper tails, ease the brownie from the tin and cut into 16 squares. Dust the surface with a little icing sugar.

MAGIC OF MOTOWN
CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF NUMBER ONE HITS
A
in’t no mountain high, ain’t no valley low, ain’t no river wide enough – to keep The Magic of Motown concert show from getting to UK music lovers in December. Officially the UK busiest touring production featuring the music of Motown Records, there have already been 70 dates.“There’s no need to worry, it’ll be there in a hurry,” says show producer Michael Taylor, paraphrasing unashamedly from the Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell hit Ain’t No Mountain High Enough. The non-stop spectacular features 36 massive chart-toppers from The Supremes, Temptations, Four Tops, Jackson 5, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Martha Reeves, Lionel Richie and more. An all-star cast, a talented live band that faithfully reproduces Motown’s original Detroit sound, 16 sparkling costume changes and tightly choreographed dance routines saw the show attract glowing reviews last year. To mark the occasion, The Magic of Motown is preparing to sign, seal and deliver (with a nod to Stevie Wonder) its biggest production ever in its nine-year history. The Magic of Motown revives all-time favourites like: Stop in the Name of Love; Signed, Sealed, Delivered; My Guy; What Becomes of the Broken Hearted; I Heard it Through the Grapevine; Endless Love; All Night Long; Heatwave; I’m Coming Out; Why Do Fools Fall in Love; Get Ready; Ain’t Too Proud to Beg; My Girl; I Want You Back; I’ll Be There; Blame it on the Boogie and Dancing in the Street. Equal care is taken to reproduce the original look of the Motown stars on stage. It was not just the music that set Berry’s signings apart from all other hit singers of the time. For mass market appeal, artistes’ images were carefully controlled from dress and choreography, right down to their manners. Celebrities continue to eye Ibiza’s property market “ The waters are stunningly turquoise, shallow enough for children and ideal for snorkeling” For decades, the Spanish island of Ibiza has been one of the most fashionable places in Europe to live and as such has attracted a steady stream of celebrity buyers. The latest is FC Barcelona’s Cesc Fabregas and agent Ibiza Sotheby’s International Realty knows why
D
aniel Chavarria Waschke, Managing Director of the Balearics Sotheby’s International Realty offices, explains, “Ibiza is a place where famous people can live away from the prying eyes of paparazzi and join in the Bohemian lifestyle alongside everyone else. Even the biggest household names don’t bring entourages of security to the beach clubs and restaurants but feel comfortable and safe in public. After many holidays on the island, Spanish footballer Cesc Fabregas has decided to put down roots and selected the conservation area of Cala Jondal as the location for his villa – he won’t have far to go to enjoy a cocktail at the infamous Blue Marlin beach club.” Other names who have owned property in Ibiza include DJs Pete Tong and Eric Morillo, fashion designer Jil Sander, musician James Blunt, designer and model Jade Jagger, singer-songwriter Noel Gallagher and retired French footballer Zinedine Zidane. On the west of the Island, in Cala Conta, Naomi Campbell is said to have purchased the home that fellow supermodel Elle McPherson used to rent every summer and it is here that discerning house hunters can find Ibiza’s first, and maybe last, condo resort – the eponymous Cala Conta. Daniel continues, “The developers of Cala Conta
took many years to secure a build license for their 33 villas as the area is a protected natural park and has strict planning controls. 500 metres from the coastline and the wonderful Cala Conta beach, the condo resort has been popular with international clients who place high value on architectural beauty, location, privacy and security – so much so that phase one of 12 villas is completely sold out.” With three designs to choose from, ranging from 559.78m² built area (to include four or five bedrooms, a garage, patio and a bright basement) up to a two storey four or five bedroom home with 661.91m² built area, all properties at Cala Conta share certain characteristics. Architectural is simple, elegant and clean with straight lines, all have an interior patio garden to help organize the flow of the house and capture a slice of blue sky, whilst local Mares stone is used in the walls alongside local perfumed plants and vegetation for the gardens. Cala Conta is also proudly environmentally friendly with rainwater collected alongside grey water to be recycled for drip irrigation and solar power combined with geothermal energy to provide hot water, heating and power the air-conditioning – the first residential development in Ibiza to do this. Modern, clean and uncluttered, the gated
residential resort is accessed by private road monitored by 24 hour security. There is a Spa centre with different water treatments, massage rooms and strengthening / cardiovascular gymnasium equipment as well as outdoor water play for children. A comprehensive concierge and cleaning service offers a menu of extras from chauffeured car hire to yacht charter, babysitting to catering. Communal areas are well looked after all year round whilst gardeners can also be contracted to tend to private outdoor spaces. Billed as one of the ten most beautiful bays in the Mediterranean, Cala Conta is small and rugged with plenty of secret nooks and hideaways for privacy and fun. The waters are stunningly turquoise, shallow enough for children and ideal for snorkeling, and look out to the little offshore islands of S’Illa des Bosc and La Conejera – the ideal backdrop for those incredible Ibizencan sunsets. Prices at Cala Conta start from 1.6 million euros (approx 1.3 million pounds). The 12 homes in phase one (due for completion 2013) are all sold although there is good availability in phase two (due for completion 2014/2015). BUSWATCH! Minister launches new bus users group in Brighton
A
new bus users group, Brighton Area Buswatch, was launched by Norman Baker, Under Secretary of state for the Department for Transport and Lewes MP at an event in Brighton last month. Brighton Area Buswatch is the new name for Bus Users UK, Central Sussex Group which represents bus users in and around Brighton from Worthing in the west to Lewes and Newhaven in the east and Haywards Heath north. The new group deals mostly with strategic issues affecting lots of people. It will campaign for improvements to bus services and fares on behalf of bus users of all local bus companies. The group works closely with local authorities, bus companies and local interest groups to build relationships and ensure that the interests of bus users are taken into account. Speaking at the launch event, Andrew Boag, Chair of Brighton Area Buswatch said: “We are lucky to have an excellent bus service in this area. This is reflected in well-used buses which are popular with all age groups. Our bus users have high expectations and we aim to ensure their requirements and aspirations are recognised.” Transport Minister Norman Baker said: “I was pleased to be asked to help re-launch of Brighton Area Buswatch last week. They are a great example of an organisation which helps get passengers the service they deserve by giving them a strong voice. This support is reflected in a recent survey by Passenger Focus where an average of 85% of bus users said they were
satisfied with the service provided.” Find out more by becoming a supporter of Brighton Area Buswatch. On-line membership is free on www.brightonbuswatch.org or on their new facebook page. eed a surfboard or a Superman outfit? Want to make some cash from those power tools lurking in your garden shed? Lenderise, a new website that could revolutionise our buying habits, has been launched in Brighton. Set to become one of the pioneering business success stories of the year, Lenderise is a smart way to make and save money. Just as EBay is about buying and selling, Lenderise is about borrowing and lending. If you have a house full of tools or sports equipment you rarely use, instead of selling them once, Lenderise lets you rent them again and again. You can turn all the things in your loft, garden shed or under the stairs into an income you didn’t know you had. Simply list them on Lenderise, start lending and making money. And of course, log on to www.Lenderise.com and you will be able to borrow pretty much anything - from roof boxes to camping gear, from fashion to DIY skills - at the click of a button. Lenderise is founded by Toby Gunton and Ben Long, who met while working at one of the UK’s Top 10 advertising agencies, and Marko Kruustük, a friend of the pair who has worked with a number of technology start-ups. They have chosen Brighton as the launch city for Lenderise, which then plans to roll out over the rest of the United Kingdom. Toby explains, “Brighton is the perfect place to launch Lenderise. The whole concept of Lenderise is based on communities working together and we believe Brighton has an incredibly strong sense of community. It is also a forward thinking city, full of people who, we believe, will get the idea of Lenderise.” In the 500 years since Shakespeare wrote the immortal phrase: “Neither a borrower nor a lender be”, consumption habits around the world have changed dramatically. Perceptions of ‘ownership’ are changing, with a significant shift from owning to simply having access to products - music (through streaming subscription sites such as Spotify), cars, (with car rental schemes such as City Car Club), even house ownership, with the increase in renting. The idea for Lenderise was born out of concept called ‘collaborative consumption’ - named
by Time Magazine as one of the 10 Ideas That Will Change The World. Lenderise founders Toby Gunton and Ben Long believe the company will be part of a growing trend that changes the consumer habits of 21st Century Britain. Ben explains, “We’re in a time when the world is changing significantly. Not only does the macroeconomic climate mean we have to be more careful about what we buy, but increasingly, even if we want to buy things we have nowhere to store them. “We believe Lenderise will be at the forefront of a new way of thinking.”
Here’s how Lenderise works: • A Lender lists an item or skill on Lenderise that they wish to rent out. Anything from a vintage dress to a campervan; tools to sports equipment; DIY skills to dog walking. • The Buyer searches for what they want to borrow and finds people in their community who have what they want. The buyer pays a small fee to the lender and the item is yours for the time you need it. • Lenderise take 10% commission on every transaction through the site also covering credit card transaction fees. • Security for borrowers and lenders is a priority for the team at Lenderise and there are a number of measures in place to ensure this. • The site will have feedback, ratings and profiles so you can get an idea of who you are borrowing from or lending to. • If you login with Facebook you can even see if you have any mutual friends. • Lenders are offered the opportunity to ask for a deposit so that if your item gets damaged you are covered. • Full details are only shared once both people have agreed to a lend. • There is a dispute resolution process as an additional safety net. • Lenderise also expects to be offering insurance on lends in the near future. You can log on and start lending and borrowing at www.lenderise.com Why buy when you can borrow.

UK LANDLORDS ARE LOSING OUT Unexpected costs mean UK landlords lose £2.1 billion a year, says Paul Cullip of Northwood Lettings
N
ew research has revealed that vacant properties, tenant arrears and unexpected maintenance charges are just a few of the many things that are costing small UK landlords1 £2.1 billion a year2, with the average landlord paying out over £1,500 a year in ad-hoc costs. The study, undertaken by Northwood, reveals that 84% of landlords receive less money than they thought from their monthly rental income due to unexpected costs, such as tenant arrears and having to take time away from their core employment to deal with tenants and the property. A property being vacant is something that particularly impacts landlords financially, with almost half revealing that they did not receive any rental income on their property for up to three months due to vacant periods, and one in ten suffering for six months or more without tenants in their property.

The study, the first and largest of its kind in the private sector, also highlighted that over half of tenants are late with their rental payments and 59% of landlords have to chase tenants for payment at some point in the last year. This is something that creates real apprehension for UK landlords, with 91% admitting they are concerned about tenant arrears over the next two years.
“Some people become landlords due to changes in personal circumstances, the need to relocate or because of the current housing market...” Whilst there is clearly a large financial implication on being a landlord, there are also more personal effects, with 82% of landlords having experienced inconveniences such as missing a personal event or having to cut back on social activities due to being a landlord. And one in five landlords saying they have been called out to their property four to five times a year. Managing Director of Northwood, Nick Cooper, comments, “Landlords have recently been under fire with accusations that tenants are victims to greedy landlords, but this research highlights that landlords too face a number of difficulties. “The amount of money being paid out for unexpected costs each year is staggering, and with tenant arrears and vacant properties a very real concern, landlords can be hit hard. “Some people become landlords due to changes in personal circumstances, the need to relocate or because of the current housing market. The research shows that being a landlord can be like having a second job that is why we have a Guaranteed Rent Service to ensure our landlords get paid, no matter what.” The Northwood Guaranteed Rent Service gives landlords the certainty of a fixed rental income even if the property is vacant or the tenant stops paying.
