Business leaders across Sussex, friends, colleagues and family mourned the tragic death of Glenn Mishon this month. As one half of the successful estate agency Mishon Mackay, many in Brighton and Hove and further afield knew Glenn well. He was a regular in the local press and a face of Brighton loved by many. For my family and I, we have lost a close family friend. And so writing this doesn’t come easy…

Senior Account Executive: Rishma Patel

What makes a place like Brighton & Hove is its people; and none more so than Glenn. He was born and bred here and remained, as did his parents Barry and Annie, and his siblings. Along with his adoring wife Barbara, they raised their children Jessie and James here. Glenn was proud to be a Brightonian. He knew every street and building well, partly due to his work but also due to him being a part of the town all his life. But it wasn’t just the bricks and mortar that Glenn knew well. I can

honestly say that I don’t know anyone else that can walk in to a room of hundreds and know most of them; Glenn could, genuinely. We attended many events with Glenn and Barbara and the family, and it never ceased to amaze me how many people he really knew. His face would light up to every person he spoke to making them feel special, and incredibly, he would remember all their names and where they’d been on holiday and their families etc. I must confess, that it was not uncommon for me to

nudge Glenn to be reminded of the odd person’s name on occasions. He sincerely loved people and I would say he touched everyone who met him. That is an exceptional gift. I am sure many people will recall Glenn as the genuine happy character who was great fun to be around. The more serious side to Glenn made it his mission to do so much for charity publicly and also in private. He was a kindhearted soul who cared about people.

Managing Director: Paul Craig

His friends varied from pop stars, actors and authors to respected business leaders, sportsmen and shopkeepers. And that reflected his life. For most will remember him in his smart sharp suits. However, those closer to him know how much he loved nothing more than to get home and don those

happier than when his family were around him whether it be Christmas, birthdays or a simple lazy Sunday afternoon; they were his pride and joy, and being as close as they were he will live on in each of them I am sure, including his grandson William who was the apple of his eye. For me he will always be the person that made me smile and laugh till it hurt; then of course we’d have a good old moan and put the world to rights too. We shared many happy memories that I feel lucky to be able to now cherish and look back upon with a smile. Glenn’s life was a life of fun, laughter, his love of music, his family and friends; what a wonderful life it was. Rest in peace our dear friend. (Memories in pictures, Page 70 &71) ABSOLUTE

ABSOLUTE COMMENT

What’s going on....?

RUSSIAN NIGHTS PJ, aka Peter Jarrette, Brighton’s favourite socialite, with the latest in great new venues, events and happenings

Dear diary I have officially re-emerged as an international socialite. Gee-whiz! How did I do that? Well, since we last interfaced on these glossy, stylish pages of Absolute Brighton... and, might I add, still the glossiest and stylish of pages our bouncy city has to offer... I have been ripping back and forth to Moscow like a truly mad Rasputin performing in Melodies of Boney M managed by Victor Logi of Moscow’s Sky Media. As I write there are many plans afoot for this tribute group to establish itself on You Tube and the internet so that Picture courtesy of Russian Press you may see me in my on-stage glory. All this jetting around has landed me in the company of Russia’s leading families and business tycoons. All of which have been enthusiastic and welcoming to me and my band mates as we take to their stages, me in ever more outlandish feathers and make-up! So as I hobnob in continual rounds of meet-and-greets, I am rubbing feathered shoulders with a whole slew of Oligarchs with whom I’ve come to be on nodding terms... as I don’t speak the language and so neither do most of them have ‘the English’. Remarkable! Closer to home I’ve been pillar-to-post throwing myself around photo stages for outrageous photoshoots, most recently an off-the-hook one at Brighton’s Media Centre for business man-come-photographer George Watt. There have been leaving parties too. The Brighton model Marta Wiktoria Wolniak and muse to Absolute’s own Fashionista columnist, the designer stylist Natalie Wileman of Former Glory returned to her native Poland to become PA to that country’s leading fashion designer. The With co-owner Aiofe Sweeney Stoneham’s Top Chef Brett Mather hosted his leaving do in the venue’s garden as he heads off to establish his kitchens in the city’s Hop Poles public house. He’s not moved as far away as Marta and that is good as, on the side, Brett has an ice cream concern which makes the most delicious peanut ice cream and salted peanut ice cream. You must contact him to find out how you can try these and other delectable flavours from his range. And new in town is the already popular and buzzy La Choza on the corner of Queens Gardens and Gloucester Road. Drop in for the tasty fare of Mexican Street food and tell can-can dancer and co-owner Aiofe Sweeney and her business partner Annie Gelpey PJ sent you! Brighton is open for business! Mo Hunter-Shine says it like it is

SAD summer

When I was young, and in memories that now seem like misty dreams, a day arrived every year usually towards the end of May, when our winter coats were put away in the wardrobe, and not taken out again until about late September, or early October. After that grand ceremony, the days after were filled with sunshine. Every child wore shorts, ladies wore floral dresses and men were in light summer shirts and slacks (not so many male knees on show then)! The mornings were full of birdsong and alfresco breakfasts, and the evenings were balmy and beautiful. Even as I grew up, I remember this arrival of summer. In the heady hot days of 76 and 77, we all went skinny-dipping at midnight by Worthing Pier, where the water was so warm, we could hardly feel it as we splashed into the night. The blue skies lasted for many months and at the end of that time, we knew we had a cold winter ahead. But that was OK, because this glorious time would come again next year. Now that has all gone. As I sit and write this in the middle of July, the rain is drizzling down outside and I am wearing a jumper. The TV has stories of washed out festivals, cancelled concerts, cancelled sports fixtures and floods. But this is not just happening in 2012, it has been like this for many years now. Looking out of the window on a cold February night last winter, I remember saying to my husband John “Never mind, I’m sure we’ll get a summer this year!” Another let down. And not helped by the fact that, despite the technological tools available today, the long range weather cannot be accurately forecast, and so we are often given false hope. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a condition that affects some people during the winter months. This is a condition that, I would guess, now affects people more in the summer than in the winter, as we EXPECT the weather to be sunnier, brighter and more settled, and so is even more depressing. At the very least, the weather can’t help but cause despondency, even in the most stoical! What’s the cause of these shifting and unsettled seasons? Global warming? Whatever it is, there seems to be only one way to escape - get away! The English Tourist Board, bless them, has been trying to woo us to stay at home, outlining the advantages of a break at home, but we need SUN. Spain and Greece may be having their financial problems at the moment, but they have more of the precious stuff than we do, so for me there is no contest. Adios amigos. PS. If you are now basking on a Sussex beach, please disregard the above!

MAKE IT SAFE

Sussex Blinds are committed to making blinds child-friendly

T

he British Blind and Shutter Association (BBSA) is urging homeowners and building users where young children live or may visit to ensure they consider reducing the possible risks associated with window blind operating cords and chains. As a member or BBSA, Sussex Blinds (Brighton) Ltd fully support the BBSA’s ‘Make it Safe’ campaign and all blinds that they make and sell comply with the current standards. Their advice for homes and buildings where children live or visit is: • When buying a new blind consider one which does not have operating cords or chains or has concealed cords and chains. • If you have an existing blind keep any operating cords or chains out of a child’s reach or better still get a retrofit

device to improve safety of cords and chains. • Do not tie cords together and make sure they do not twist and create a loop. • Move cots, beds and furniture away from windows and blinds as children love to climb. Sussex Blinds (Brighton) Ltd are committed to the BBSA’s ‘Make it Safe’ code, for more information on blind cord safety, either contact or visit their showroom, where they will give you the best possible advice on the most appropriate choice of blinds and the ways to make it safer. eneral places in the 2013 Brighton Marathon have now sold out. But don’t despair if you have missed out on one as you can still sign up for the Marathon by running with The Martlets Hospice using one of their guaranteed charity places. Although they are going fast they still have 25 places to offer as The Martlets is an official Brighton Marathon charity for 2013. Running for The Martlets has been a rewarding experience for many local people. “Having been connected with the Martlets (from even before it was built!), it was great to have their support and encouragement in running all three Brighton Marathons – raising sponsorship for such a good local cause added greatly to my sense of achievement,” said one of their runners in 2012. Speaking about how The Martlets supports its Marathon runners, Robert Griffiths, fundraising director said: “We pride ourselves on creating a real team spirit for all our runners. Hove Paints and Wallpapers

Solo at sea

Hove Paints and Wallpapers are excited to announce the launch of our newly refurbished Boundary Road shop

Scott Anderson discusses the pros and cons of travelling alone

A

lot of people travel on their own, either by choice or by circumstance, but what is it like to cruise on your own?

First and foremost, a cruise is a very social way of taking a holiday. By its nature there are lots of opportunities for single guests to meet other travellers. In the main dining room, you will usually be assigned a table to dine at for the duration of your cruise. Often the Maître D will allocate a table to the single travellers – a perfect way for people to meet and get to know each other. Some ships operate an open dining policy, and again you have the opportunity of being seated with other guests. From my own experience this works very well and new friendships are soon struck up. The ship will usually arrange a singles get together cocktail party or other social event during the cruise, so again a great time to make and meet new friends over a social drink. On the ships tours there are other great opportunities to chum up and share the experience of the ports of call you are visiting – or why not enjoy the excursions with your newfound friends from dinner? ‘Broadwick St - Garden’ by Little Greene

Along with our friendly and knowledgeable staff, we have a vast stock of decorating equipment to meet all your needs. As well as a extensive range of Macphersons and Sandtex colours, we are also able to colour match most colours specially mixed to meet your requirements. We are also now proud stockists of Sanderson, Morris & Co, Little Greene Paint Company and Harlequin Wallpapers. The other aspect of solo cruising is just how safe it is, and this is one of the main draws for single passengers. Everything you need is on board – so there are no restaurants to hunt down, no taxis to get, or streets to walk late at night to worry about – everything is just a few decks away.

“ The ship will usually arrange a singles get together cocktail party or other social event during the cruise.” Solo ladies usually outweigh solo men on a cruise, and a number of cruise ships will have gentleman dance hosts on board, all of whom are proficient in the Foxtrot, Salsa, Waltz and more. However – there is a drawback, and probably the main one to be honest – is the single supplements. Some cruise lines will charge double the price, however there are many others that offer a small supplement – such as £100, or just a small percentage supplement like 10% to 50%. Other ships have designated single cabins and these are priced accordingly. If you are interested in solo travel, then please contact The Luxury Cruise Company for more information.

This month, fitness guru Livia O’Toole discusses how to stay in shape with good eating!

Battling with Summer weight loss?

Need a bit of help to get you started?

Learn to love food again! After the age of 25, women lose about 1lb of muscle each year if we do not exercise correctly. But you can regain control! By regularly training with weights and following some simple eating rules, you can enjoy a strong, healthy and beautifully shaped body. Reduce your intake by 300-500 calories per day, exercise and eat regularly and you’ll be back in control. Get your eating back on track so it supports your exercise regime; rather than hinders it: 1. Drink water constantly: Always have bottles with you; in the car, in your bag, in the office and lots in the fridge! 2. Eat up to six small meals per day to keep energy levels steady: try to prep your food the day before for easy ready meals throughout the day, balanced in carbohydrates, protein and veg. 3. Avoid fried foods, ice cream and desserts - only have them occasionally; there’s a reason they taste good and it’s a bad one! 4. Eat as ‘cleanly; as possible: i.e food that hasn’t been fussed with! Eat food without sauces; blanching/ baking meat in the oven, steaming veg and sticking to good carbs like brown rice, sweet potatoes, porridge oats and bran. 5. Limit white pasta – and even brown bread: eat gluten free bread if possible. 6. Foods to have once a week: anything with a heavy sauce, especially creamy sauces and cheese plates – instead, eat cheese little and often, using it in wraps, salads or jacket potatoes.

Join our 4-week programme to kick start your weight loss. These weekly 90-minute workshops will provide you with the understanding, knowledge and support you need to get you started. Just £25 per session.

With these rules you will regain control of your weight, stay fit and healthy and ensure you always have energy for your weight training!

For more information on how to manage your eating and training please contact me on: Livia@fitfreedom.co.uk

ABSOLUTE LIFE COACHING

How do I do it?

Absolute Life Coaching gives advice on speaking publicly

F

or many people the thought of standing up and speaking in public can be a nightmare, but it really doesn’t have to be. Allow us to help you. Getting out of your comfort zone can be very frightening for some people. But why? What are the gremlins that are causing this? Most people have gremlins, little voices lurking around telling us perhaps we are not good enough, too old, too young, or too stupid. In life coaching we work to help people kick these gremlins out. Firstly, ask yourself what are your greatest fears and your answer usually relates to the notion that other people are possibly more intelligent, more articulate, more powerful, more awesome, more amusing, then you. Now ask yourself what makes you unique and worth listening to. Easy answer because it’s you! Strategies for success Preparation is of paramount importance, for any public speaking, so be prepared!

Consider and learn about your audience, visualise them and yourself delivering smoothly and successfully. Know your subject and remember to enjoy your knowledge of the subject. Use words you and your audience are familiar with. In the event you are speaking to a gathering of people you are familiar with, don’t make the mistake of addressing them as strangers, be chummy, be yourself – be sincere. An endearing feature of a speaker is sincerity. Try not to look down at your knees. Head up, looking continually around at everyone present. Eye contact is powerful! Avoid the trap of using highbrow and uncomfortable phrases, just use everyday lingo! This will enable ALL of your audience to comprehend the message you are delivering. When appropriate use slides as these can be a welcome addition to any speech.

Try not to ramble; it is better to use clipped statements. Timing is important. Rather than race through at a speed of knots, speak at a slightly slower pace than you speak normally. Change your tone of voice. Don’t be MONOTONE! A joke or some form of humour is always attractive and lifts the speech, remember a funny anecdote isn’t the speech, its a microcosm of it. Cards can be useful – simply with a large bullet point to feed your memory. A speech should never be read but spoken. Our language is beautiful enjoy it and give a compelling speech. We guarantee when you have made your speech and sat down you will feel on a ‘HIGH’. Good luck! If you would like to try life coaching call Terrina on 01273 507679 or Georgina on 07912 296483.

ABSOLUTE DENTAL

DENTIST OR HYGIENIST? Sandy Furlong, dental hygienist at Marina Dentalcare, explains the importance of the hygienist

S

ome might dislike the idea of going to the dentist! I used to feel that way myself, and maybe that is why I became such a committed hygienist. I know how I felt then, and therefore I want to protect my patients from that feeling. I knew that my anxious feelings were greatly alleviated if I was confident, and felt in control, because almost all dental problems can be prevented. Even when extensive work is required, further problems can usually be prevented using techniques that are adapted to you, the individual patient. “How much longer before you are properly qualified?” – is a question that I used to be asked frequently, as patients made the assumption that a person doing what I was doing was obviously on the road to higher things and that one day I would be a proper dentist! Even now, the roles of the two professions are often blurred, as the dentist that I work beside often has to deal with the comment that: “the dentist always used to do the cleaning and polishing.” The implication being that maybe he should be doing the work, when in fact he is not really trained to do it. Some dentists do have specialist training in gum care and prevention and these dentists are called periodontists. In a nutshell, a dentist is trained to repair the ravages of disease and thus treat pain. They are highly skilled in that, and have developed their profession to the extent that implants once thought impossible are now frequently placed, and are very successful. While a hygienist is trained to prevent disease and teach patients how to be in control of their own oral health, hygienists treat gum disease as a means to an end, to prevent bone loss and thus prevent tooth loss. Success in personal oral care is very difficult.

Trying to remove plaque, which is microscopically small, from a number of small rounded objects which you have never seen, and never will see in detail, means that you never have any feedback as to your success or otherwise. Except over time, when the health, or lack of it, that you experience within your mouth will tell you! The area that you are working in is at best dimly lit and often inaccessible without someone to shine a light

“... it was the RAF who started training hygienists in earnest. Eventually hygienists were trained to work in general practice” on the subject, often literally, failure is almost guaranteed. Sadly, this guidance is sometimes perceived as having a telling off, but nowadays the more informed patient understands that it is an effort by the dental profession to prevent discomfort, pain, and the myriad of other problems that result from disease in the mouth, and the detailed help that a hygienist can offer is appreciated. So how did this other profession evolve? Originally it was in America by a Dr Fones who realised that he could help his patients much more by education than he could by just treating them. So to this end he trained his assistant to teach and involve his patients in their own oral care. This was revolutionary at the time, as it was generally considered then that patients were

passive receivers of care, rather than part of the solution. Because of that prevailing attitude, the concept was not widely accepted. However, in England in the First World War it was noted that as a result of mouth disease many wouldbe soldiers were just not fit enough to fight! By the time of the Second World War things had changed a bit in that the RAF was not only a force to be reckoned with, but it was vital that pilots were as fit as they could be to cope with the rigours of combat. So it was the RAF who started training hygienists in earnest. Eventually hygienists were trained to work in general practice. So how can you as a patient make sure that you are getting that bit of extra tuition and care? Firstly you can ask your dentist for a referral to the practice hygienist. If your favourite dentist chooses not to work with a hygienist within the practice, and many choose not to for all sorts of reasons, it is simple for a referral to be made, just to see a hygienist in another location. It is not necessary to change your dentist. I take many referrals from other practices at Marina Dentalcare. If you would prefer not to do that, I can arrange for just a referral for a hygienist appointment, and nothing else here at Marina Dentalcare. Just recently I have had some dental treatment. The first for over 14 years, not my idea of a good game but made infinitely better by knowing exactly the extent of the problem, and what my role in preventing further problems was. That knowledge is not a secret known only because of my chosen profession, it is available to anyone who wants it – just ask! ABSOLUTE HAIR

GET AHEAD!

End of season sales mean one thing, a fresh new look is coming our way. Let your head lead the way with Mark Woolley’s look at the next season’s trends, towards autumn/winter 2012/13 Autumn is an absolute favourite for hairdressers with clients looking for colour changes, daring cuts, glamorous blowdries and flashes of warm hues and slices of fiery panels added to their dos. These are the 3 key looks that will give you the edge of next season before the clothes hit the shops.

STRAIGHT TALKING: Victoria Beckham, Lavin, Elie Saab and Theyskens’ Theory all sent their girls down the runway with luscious long, straight hair. We are not talking the polka straight achieved by heating irons but healthy, shiny, strong and feminine. This look is achieved with a great foundation: 1. Cleanse with a professional shampoo and conditioner, nourish mid-lengths and ends with a mask every 2 weeks to ensure the hair is healthy from within. 2. Blow-dry your hair with a paddle brush; our favourite is Denman’s large Paddle brush (£11 electric-hair.com). 3. Finish with a spritz of shine spray and let it hang loose.

By Mark Woolley Mark Woolley is the owner and creative director of Electric Hairdressing. Mark’s recommended product:

LANA DEL REY BARBARELLA BLOW-DRY: 1. Begin with freshly cleansed hair, spray roots with a healthy dose of root-lift volumiser. 2. Turn you head upside down and blow-dry gently pulling the roots to get volume and the feeling of air into the hair. Use a sprinkling of Shu Uemura’s Volume Maker (£31) or L’Oréal Professionnel’s Super Dust (£11.50) to get substantial volume that will hold. 3. Smooth the hair out using a medium Denman headhugger to achieve a soft wave and definition to the ends of the hair. 4. Take a triangle section with the widest point at the forehead and the narrow at the crown, elevate and back comb to the desired head and use a soft brush to smooth into shape and position.

ABSOLUTE HEALTH

Hydrate Yourself At last the warm weather has arrived, and with it often comes dehydration. Make sure you don’t suffer and keep the fluids flowing

W

e all need hydration and regularly hear and read about dehydration during warmer months, but do we actually know what it is and what potential harm it can do to us? From causing regular headaches and cramps to eye problems and skin rashes, if your body doesn’t have the necessary daily fluids it requires to keep it healthy it could suffer with such ailments and more. The basic fact is, that drinking enough water improves your health and sustains good health. Depending upon your height and weight, the average person should consume about two litres of water per day. This can be a mixture of fluids such as fresh juices. However, the reason you often hear that the two litres per day should be water is because water washes out toxins in your body and is purer for your kidneys to filter through. Every body part and organ of the human body benefits from water intake. But while it helps improve eyesight, bones, hair and skin and blood flow, what many people don’t realize is the benefit it can have on you mentally. Have you ever suffered memory loss and then realized how dehydrated you feel? Well, that is true because being dehydrated can actually affect memory and even moods. A lot of sufferers of depression are often discovered to be ‘low consumers of water.’ If you simply lose track of time and that is the reason you don’t drink so much water, a good tip for ‘reminding’ yourself to drink is to set a reminder to bleep on your mobile phone every hour to drink a glass of water. Alternatively there are now devices on the market that you can purchase that actually assist you.

DEVICES THAT CAN PROMPT YOU TO DRINK WATER: - HydraCoach Bottle - The HydraCoach dishes out advice regarding how much water you should be drinking based on your weight and duration of exercise routines, and can be programmed to take into account factors such as altitude, pregnancy and current heat. You can check it regularly and see if you have reached your daily target or how much you have consumed so far. www.hydracoach.co.uk Also available from Amazon. -

Water Lite App - This useful little Iphone App helps you track how much water you should be consuming. You input your height and weight and the App will tell you how much you should be consuming per day. Every time you drink a glass, you tap the app to let it know. Will you have reached your goal by the end of the day though?

“Every body part and organ of the human body benefits from water intake… what many people don’t realize is the benefit it can also have on you mentally.” Top Tips to Hydration: Keep a bottle of water in your car, handbag/briefcase, on your desk or anywhere else that will remind you to drink Drink a large glass of water as soon as you wake up and then again last thing at night (obviously with your intake throughout the day too) If you really don’t like water, try squeezing a lemon or two in to a jug of it and place it in the fridge to cool. You will then benefit from vitamin c while also enjoying a refreshing drink. Alcohol is a big dehydrator! If you consume it, have alternate glasses of water (this will also prevent the nasty hangover the next day!) If you work at a desk, regularly take yourself away from it for a few minute intervals to drink a large glass of water. Look at drinking water as your reward for working hard! Once you start the habit of drinking water, you will find you actually want more and start to enjoy it.

Serves 4 Preparation time: 30 minutes Cooking time: 10 minutes Ingredients: For the lamb: 800g diced leg of lamb Small bunch of thyme chopped 1 lemon zested and juiced 2 tbsp olive oil Salt and pepper

For crushed peas: 200g fresh peas, shelled and cooked Small bunch of parsley chopped Half lemon, juiced 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil Salt and pepper For tzatziki: 150g Greek yogurt Half a cucumber deseeded and finely chopped Small bunch of mint, shredded Salt and pepper 48

To serve: 4 warmed pitta breads 1 lemon cut into 4 wedges 1 red chilli deseeded and finely chopped Method: 1. In a medium sized bowl marinade the lamb with the thyme, lemon and olive oil, season with salt and pepper and set aside. 2. In a food processor blend the cooked peas, parsley, lemon juice and olive oil for 30 seconds, remove and season with salt and pepper and then set aside. 3. In a small bowl, mix together the Greek yogurt, cucumber and mint and then season with salt and pepper and then set aside. 4. Preheat a griddle pan. Then divide the lamb between 4 skewers and place on the griddle for 3 minutes each side. The lamb should be slightly pink in the middle. 5. When the lamb is cooked, divide between 4 plates and serve with the crushed peas, tzatziki, warm pitta and lemon wedges. Sprinkle with the chopped chilli.

For the pitta crisps: 1 pack white or brown pitta bread Olive oil for brushing Salt and freshly ground black pepper Method: 1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/gas 6. 2. Roughly chop the beetroot and herbs and put in a food processor with the walnuts and garlic and process until you have a course paste. 3. Add the oil and vinegar and season generously with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Taste to check the seasoning – you may need to add a little more vinegar if the beetroot are particularly sweet. Set aside for the flavours to mingle while you make the pitta crisps. 4. For the pitta crisps, slice each into 2-3 strips diagonally and gently prise each strip in half. Arrange on baking sheets, brush with the oil and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Bake in the oven for 10-15 minutes or until the pitta strips are dry and crispy. The crisps will keep in an airtight tin for at least a week. www.lovebeetroot.co.uk

BBQ Pink Lady apple kebabs with ginger yoghurt dip

Tom Aikens’ lime and coriander chicken and Tenderstem rice salad

Inspired by the hot climate growing regions for Pink Lady apples, these make the perfect end to any barbeque – juicy fruit kebabs with a zingy dip

Serves 6 people Preparation time: 10 minutes

Serves 2 Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 5 minutes

Serves 4 Cooking and preparation time: 10 minutes

Ingredients: 1 Pink Lady apple, cored and cut into 12 wedges 150gm fresh pineapple, peeled, cored and cut into 4 cubes (1/4 small pineapple) 4 tbsp honey 150gm 0% fat Greek yoghurt 2tsp freshly grated ginger A few fresh mint leaves for garnish

Ingredients: 200g pack Tenderstem, cut into 3cm lengths 400g Greek yogurt 3tbsp chopped coriander, plus extra to serve 15 mint leaves cut into thin strips Juice and zest of 2 limes 4 cooked chicken breasts, sliced 500gm cooked rice 80gm toasted flaked almonds 6 sliced green spring onions

Method: 1. Thread the apples and pineapple onto 4 skewers. 2. Brush with 1 tbsp honey. 3. Heat a griddle pan until really hot and cook for 4-5 minutes, turning until chargrilled. In a small bowl mix together the Greek yoghurt, ginger and remaining honey. Serve the kebabs with the yoghurt and scatter with the mint leaves.

Method: Steam or boil the Tenderstem for 3-4 minutes until tender. Meanwhile, mix together the yoghurt, coriander, mint, lime juice and lime zest and leave to infuse for a few minutes. Put the chicken, rice, cooked Tenderstem, almonds and spring onions in a large mixing bowl and season. Add the yoghurt dressing and combine the ingredients together. Serve with a sprinkling of chopped coriander.

Ingredients: 300gm Sweet Eve strawberries 6 sugar cubes (optional) 3 shots of elderflower cordial 3 shots of Campari 1 bottle of Prosecco Method: 1. Take 6 large champagne flutes and chill in the refrigerator. Hull all the strawberries and chop and blend half of them. Strain the strawberry puree into a jug through a sieve, to eliminate the seeds. 2. When you are ready to serve the cocktail place a cube of sugar at the bottom of each glass, (if you prefer your cocktails less sweet then you can leave the sugar out). Pour half a shot of elderflower into each glass, followed by half a shot of Campari and half a shot of strained strawberry puree. 3. Open the Prosecco bottle and top each flute with fizzy wine. Mix with a cocktail stirrer and serve with the remaining Sweet Eve strawberries.

The Orchestra, voted the ‘Best Band in the Land’ for the 11th consecutive year, is set to play tunes celebrating the musical career of Glenn Miller, offering the mellifluous melodies of hits such as ‘Moonlight Serenade’, ‘In the Mood’ and ‘I Know Why.’ Although the Orchestra performed at the ancient Castle several years ago, the concert marks the first big band al fresco performance at the ancestral home and the audience will be strictly encouraged to dance and

sing along to the best of big band classics that have weathered the test of time. The band was formed in 1967 by trumpeter and arranger Syd Lawrence, offering an exhilarating blend of classic big band swing and dance music perfect for toe tapping and singing along. Taking over after Lawrence’s retirement in 1996, Chris Dean has continued the success of the Orchestra with international performances in concert halls, theatres and music festivals. They also appeared on BBC One’s ‘The One Show’ with presenter Chris Evans in April. Opened by HRH the Prince of Wales in 2008, the Collector Earl’s Garden has garnered acclaim for its ducal decor of catalpas, scented magnolia grandiflora and shrubbery designed by gardeners of Royal appointment. The concert will see the Jacobean-inspired setting blend with music from the fabulous forties. The Syd Lawrence Orchestra’s concert is on Tuesday 21st August at Arundel Castle. Tickets cost £25 and are available from www.arundelfestival.co.uk Other Castle performances include award-winning classical vocal quartet Blake on Monday 20th August and Shakespeare’s The Tempest and The Taming of the Shrew between the 23rd and 25th August.

Hope In The Valley riders gain Olympic inspiration

P

ara-equestrians of the future gained a taste of Olympic glory at a cross country challenge organised by the South of England Agricultural Society (SEAS) for Riding for the Disabled (RDA). Youngsters from Plumpton-based Hope in the Valley Riding for the Disabled Group aged between five and sixteen took part in a pony trek at the South of England Centre in Ardingly. The event gave a new dimension to the Group’s activities as it was the first time many of the youngsters had been on a cross country hack. The initiative was the brainchild of Fiona Malcolm, the Commercial and Marketing Director for SEAS. Her idea was to stage an Olympic Inspire project and working together with livestock secretary Wiz Crockford, whose mother volunteers for Hope in the Valley, and Sheila Camilleri, Hope in the Valley RDA Group Organiser, the RDA annual picnic matched the criteria. The event, aimed at motivating and encouraging new volunteers for the Group, was awarded the coveted London 2012 Inspire mark, which recognises exceptional community projects using the Games as inspiration for lasting change. Former Hope in the Valley member Sarah Baverstock presented rosettes and medals to the riders and volunteers. Sarah, 34, from Peacehaven joined the group when she was five and, having given up riding at 16, was then introduced to carriage driving at Heron’s Ghyll RDA at college. Sarah now competes in RDA

carriage driving events with her own pony Kelly both at regional and national level. During the afternoon, the Queen’s Jubilee Hall at the South of England Centre was laid out in party style with colourful table cloths and a symbolic giant ‘Olympic’ flame. Later in the afternoon an enormous celebration chocolate cake was cut by Sarah Baverstock and enjoyed by everyone. A Punch and Judy show, balloon modelling and magic were provided by Jonathan Cann, courtesy of the Agricultural Society which brought together laughter and entertainment in equal measure. The Southdown Hunt East Pony Club also gave a demonstration of Prince Philip Cup mounted games during the afternoon. Hope in the Valley Group Organiser, Sheila Camilleri, said: “This wonderful afternoon provided a real adventure for our young riders as well as an inspiration for youngsters to engage in volunteering. The atmosphere was lively and joyful throughout the afternoon. It was motivational and heart-warming especially during the prize giving when the riders proudly collected their awards from Sarah Baverstock.” Fiona Malcolm added: “The South of England Agricultural Society is very proud to have partnered with the Hope in the Valley RDA Group to use the Olympic Inspire mark for this special event that, in line with the Paralympic values, was a true celebration of achievement for these young people. It really was an afternoon to inspire us all.”

here are many guides for parents seeking objective information about schools for their child, but the Good Schools Guide is considered to be very special because their reports are based on the rigorous appraisal of one of their reporting team who has not only inspected the school, but also talked to a number of parents of current pupils. The Guide’s new report on Hurstpierpoint College was published on its website this June and will appear in the 2013 print edition of the guide. Hurstpierpoint College, the Guide concludes, ‘is now the ďŹ rst choice for many parents who would traditionally have sent their children further aďŹ eld’. As well as noting that its value added is ‘fantastic’, the Guide reports that the College is ‘very parent friendly’ and ‘bends over backwards to

make life easy for parents’ and is particularly commended for its excellent communication via e-mails and newsletters. “Challenge grades the Guide continues “are particularly popular with parents. Based on IQ tests, an ambitious but, with hard work, achievable grade for each subject is set at the beginning of each academic year. Children are assessed through Challenge Grade reviews every 3-4 weeks and these accompanied by teacher comments and a graph to plot progress, are e-mailed directly to parents. “Problems are picked up as soon as they arise and there are no nasty surprises says one happy parent. “The mantra ‘achieving your personal best’ permeates all aspects of school life says the Guide “not just academic but also participation in sports and clubs,

activities and social relationships. A spokesman for the College commented that “the Guide’s inspector captured much of the true spirit of Hurst and its close knit yet outward looking community. We will certainly recommend that anyone impressed by this review comes to Hurst, for a private visit or on an Open Morning. We know that they will not be disappointed.

sign of the times! Hurstpierpoint is situated on the top of a greensand ridge with remarkable and beautiful countryside both to the north and south. The greensand was and still is, very good agricultural land and for many years the farming community in the area did well with plenty of jobs for ploughmen, labourers, blacksmiths, wheelwrights and all the other agricultural trades. Now all but a very few of these jobs are gone, despite a few echoes of the past at Washbrook’s Family Farm, the flower club and the sheep on Danny’s Estate. What of the future? The project set out to commission 204 photographic portraits of 204 Londoners, each originating from one of the nations competing at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The portraits will be exhibited as large-scale posters at two sites close to Olympic venues: on the external wall surrounding the BT London Live site in Victoria Park in East London, and across a city-block in Central London covering the façade of the new Park House development in Oxford Street. To ensure its legacy, The World in London project, comprising a full set of portrait prints, along with supporting materials in the form of video, oral history and written interviews, will be donated to the Museum of London where it will form a part of the museum’s permanent collection. Dust in Their Eyes The work of Natasha Law

E

leven, London, is presenting Natasha Law’s latest exhibition Dust in Their Eyes. In her bold signature style, she creates sequences with her figures developing a sense of movement across her new works. She captures her models in a moment of action whether it be removing an article of clothing or exhaling a plume of smoke. Dust in Their Eyes explores a temporary deflection of being able to see someone intently and examines the transient barriers we create between ourselves and the world. From blowing into a piece of bubble gum or averting a gaze these actions act as

momentary deterrents creating distance between us and others. She also capitalises on the anonymity of the figures. A face obscured by hair or a back slightly turned, she relies on the viewer’s own voyeuristic fascination to draw them into her intriguing vignettes. Dust in Their Eyes The work of Natasha Law Now until Friday 17th August 2012 1 Eccleston Street, London, SW1W 9LX The gallery will be closed on Saturdays in August.

n an unseasonably cold summer evening, the Victoria bar at the Grand Hotel, Brighton, was transformed into a 1920’s jazz club for the night, as Matthew vanKan, the hotel’s resident performer and selfstyled ‘modern crooner’, introduced a backing band for the first time to his trad jazz set. Matthew doesn’t do things by half - the band was made up of no less than five musicians; pianist Joss Peach, double bassist George Trebar, saxophonist Josie Peach, drummer Loz Thomas and 86-year-old trumpet player Jo Hunter. Virginia vanKan and Julie Schatzberger provided the vocals with Mathew, dressed top to toe in Gresham Blake, leading the way with his softly sung harmonies from a timeless era. The eight-piece ensemble played a fantastic set of bigband swing songs, jazz and blues to the packed Victoria bar with its old world glamour synonymous with the Grand. Among the guests was Peter Phillips, son of John Turner Phillips who back in 1954 wrote the lyrics to Charlie Chaplin’s composition ‘Smile’. Matthew dedicated this song to the Phillips family... a truly magical moment. For Matthew’s appearance dates at The Grand visit www.vankan.co.uk. He will also appears regularly at Bohemia in The Lanes. Admission is free - not to be missed.

Chestnut Tree House, the children’s hospice for Sussex, welcomed around 50 guests to a VIP Evening Reception at the Porsche Centre Mid-Sussex in Burgess Hill. Guests heard from Keith Van Den Dyck, whose son, Matthew is cared for by Chestnut Tree House, on how the hospice makes a huge difference to his family by giving them a break from the 24 hour care Matthew needs. During the evening, Chestnut Tree House Patron, Ryan Heal, presented a cheque to Director of Children’s Services, Linda Perry, Janet Parsons from Chestnut tree House David Hill with Jamie Greaves and Charlotte Wilson from E3 Group

ABSOLUTE TRIBUTE

A MAN OF STATURE Brighton says goodbye to ones of its most successful businessmen, and most popular gentlemen Every once in a while, somebody’s passing on can affect a large part of a community. Last month ours was masked by the very sad loss of Glenn Mishon. Known as one half of the hugely successful Mishon Mackay estate agency based in Brighton and across Sussex, Glenn was a hugely respected and popular businessman admired by many. For those that knew him personally, he was the funny happy chappy with a huge smile who was genuine and kindhearted, and whose most important thing in his life was his family; his wife Barbara, two children and grandson, and parents and siblings. Glenn will be hugely missed by all whose lives he touched and by the city he was born and bred in, for if anyone was Mr Brighton, Glenn was. Rest in peace Glenn. A tribute to Glenn from our editor can be read on page 7.

An eco-friendly house

at the National Home Improvement Show with Oliver Heath

B

righton resident Oliver Heath, spokesperson for The National Home Improvement Show and presenter of BBC’s Changing Rooms, is a huge eco homes champion. He believes that it is important to think long term when creating a green home in order to save your household running costs: “If designed with care, eco homes can be beautiful, healthy, nurturing and efficient spaces to live in,” says the designer. “Eco materials and products will help cut your use of basic resources like gas, water and electricity, cut your yearly bills and also help keep your home lovely and warm this winter and for many winters to come.” Some tips for an eco home: 1) Draft excluders Draught excluders around doors, windows and opening such as letter boxes will eliminate cold drafts and help to insulate the house avoiding heat loss and save warm air. This means that less energy is needed to heat the home which could save households £55 per year (Energy Saving Trust). Draft excluders should be placed in the around doors, windows, loft hatches, letter boxes, and even key holes. They can be bought from DIY and hardware stores and make for a satisfying and easy DIY job. 2) Chimney Balloon Do you have a disused fireplace? A cheap and effective solution to stop warm air being sucked up the chimney breast and out of the house is a chimney balloon. This device will also prevent draughts coming back down the chimney into the house saving you money on heating your home. Fitting one will make an immediate and noticeable improvement to the warmth of that room and can easily be removed by deflating the balloon if you want to use the fireplace. 3) Heat recovery ventilation Good ventilation is essential in moisture heavy rooms such as bathrooms and kitchens, to reduce the build up of damp which can lead to the growth of mould, but can often lead to cold drafts unless the right product is specified. A heat recovery fan can be up to 80 per cent

efficient, extracting the warmth from stale air and using this to preheat fresh air being drawn in; helping to reduce moisture and providing warm fresh air. They are continual running but can cost as little as £4 a year to run. 4) Windows Get your windows cleaned every four-six weeks to maximise the amount of light coming into the home. This will maximise natural light and reduce the need to turn on electricity hungry lighting – another energy saver! Giving your windowsills a lick of light reflecting paint will also reflect natural light back into your property reducing the need for artificial light. Thick curtains over windows will also reduce heat loss at night but make sure these are pulled well back in the day and don’t cover radiators. For more information on a greener approach to home improvement, visit Oliver Heath for a free 15 minute consultation in The Advice Centre at The National Home Improvement Show. For one on one guidance, don’t forget to bring your plans along too. Oliver will also be joining the experts from Real Homes magazine in the Real Homes LIVE! Theatre 1, delivering two daily indepth seminars:

“If designed with care, eco homes can be beautiful, healthy, nurturing and efficient spaces to live in...”
