It’s been a busy time with summer finally arriving, hence all of the fun events that come with it. One event I thoroughly enjoy each year, is the wonderful Chelsea Flower Show; with its usual quintessential feel, this year’s press day was no exception. English meadow plants and tropical

colours seem to be all the rave for this year’s garden fashion. And shall I name drop? Ok, you’ve persuaded me. Rubbing shoulders with the likes of Sir Cliff Richard, Sir Trevor MacDonald, Lawrence Llewellyn-Bowen and Sir Michael Caine at the show in Chelsea was a treat! Such lovely, fun gentlemen who each showed a different perspective on the displays. Sir Cliff’s favourite was apparently ‘the magnificent tropical gardens’ reminding him of his own tropical paradise in Barbados.

Managing Director: Paul Craig

Perhaps it’s because gardening goes hand in hand with self-sufficiency, or perhaps it is just that people are finding it a great way to relieve stress! It was also noticeable at this

ABSOLUTE INTERVIEW “I actually think the artists of today are better than those from yesteryear. They’re more all round entertainers than groups like The Stones or The Beatles” What gets you down? I don’t like the continual swearing on TV! I don’t swear and I think people have a responsibility not to bring swearing into other people’s homes. I know there’s a 9pm watershed but do they really think kids go to bed at 9 these days? Aside from that, I find EastEnders very depressing. As a schoolboy you won a sports scholarship. Are you Britain’s long lost sporting prodigy? It’s true that I was captain of the school cricket and football team. I was actually a pretty decent fast bowler. But I don’t have the slightest interest in sport. In fact, I detest football. It gets too much airtime and has become a national obsession. I absolutely hate it. Particularly when it interferes with Coronation Street. Sounds like you’re going to love the Olympics then? I’d love to be out of the country when they’re on but sadly I can’t be. You were the first King of the Jungle in ‘I’m a Celebrity’. Who from subsequent series would you have loved to have been in the jungle camp with? I’d loved to have been in there with Timmy Mallett. I like him and thought he was terrific. So too was Brighton’s own David Van Day. People get the wrong idea about him because he plays the pantomime villain so well! We were on ‘Coach Trip’ together and we annoyed people so much we were voted off the show in the quickest ever time. David was actually really upset about it. But we went out afterwards in Switzerland and had the most enormous amount of drink. It was a brilliant night, but then we always get on well wherever we are.

“I detest football. It gets too much airtime and has become a national obsession. I absolutely hate it.

Do you watch such presenters as Noel Edmonds on Deal or No Deal, secretly yearning for a cult TV show of your own? Yes I do watch it (Deal or No Deal) and yes I would have loved to have done it. I had my own TV show a long time ago but I never really enjoyed it. But now I’d love to do a chat show. Alas, it’s probably too late for me now… Aside from your own chat show, have you got any other ambitions left? My ambition is to have a non-speaking part in my

What’s going on....?

RAIN AND SHOWERS PJ, aka Peter Jarrette, Brighton’s favourite socialite, with the latest in great new venues, events and happenings

Dear diary I don’t do things by half measures. No. In fact in the near past, when it rained I’d have a word with the settled low pressure weather patterns and I’d say ‘sluice me down’. More than happy to oblige, the dark, churning, swollenbellied rainclouds have opened up repeatedly and soaked me right through my hats to my bottle blonde With Maryam Salehi roots. I can only apologise for my of Usual Suspects delusions of dialogue with nature that Pictures by Melissa Buchanan has resulted in us all having had to conduct our daily business submerged under six feet of water. Still, we are all intrepid if not soggy socialites are we not? We haven’t had to fish around too hard for events to attend. I made a good jab with my speargun at a handful of entertaining evenings. Victoria Allen and Maryam Salehi of Usual Suspects Salons scored goals with a night of Brighton & Hove footballers and music by Normanton Street for Macmillan Cancer Support. Local businessmen were in attendance and we were introduced to new new stylist/Art Director Richard Auob (formerly Toni& Guy) and barber Eimilie Marta greets Natalie Dieudonne (Formerly Gentlemen at Zizi’s Prefer Blondes). I hosted the raffle channelling the presenting style of TV’s Super Casino! Weather held that night! Over the following wet weeks we were at a surprise Baby Shower thrown for Absolute’s own Natalie Wileman by the model Marta Wicktoria Wolniak at Zizi restaurant. It rained! We also celebrated my wife Karin’s birthday with drinks (and yelling) at the Connaught and then were transferred by our passionate, generous Italian amico Giovanni Dell’Anna to the hushed tones at Ginger Pig where we yelled even louder making toasts and decimating cheeseboards. Weather held! There were two shows that had my interest for the May Festival. The opening night of Salon Pasha www.goddamnmedia.com and the opening day at Black Gallery www.thebalckgallery.co.uk where I showed alongside five other exhibitors including our photographer Melissa Buchanan’s impacting photo imagery. Weather held for both! Lastly there was the birthday for Brighton’s tall, blonde Kath Marlow (soon to record the track Silly Games) where I ran into Billy Mauseth and Nicola Gunstone of the power team Regency Events (hosts of the Eco Technology Show at the Amex Stadium). Mo Hunter-Shine says it like it is

National treasure

Recently I saw a TV programme in which Sir David Attenborough was answering questions from members of the public. It was fascinating, as is everything connected with this man, and I realised then that he is the one television presenter that I have been watching all my life. When I was young I used to watch a programme called Zoo Quest. It was in black and white, and had a young good-looking Attenborough, with a refined accent, telling us about exotic animals and plants. It was a fabulous weekly series, and I remember how sad I was each time it was over. Through the years he has continued to enthral us, and with the incredible technological advances in filming and broadcasting, his programmes are some of the most spectacular and exciting on TV. In the 60’s Attenborough became the controller of BBC 2, and was there when the channel became the first to broadcast in colour. He was also director of programming for the BBC, but his real passion was for programme making, and thankfully for us, he eventually devoted his life to making more and more fascinating and enthralling natural history series. He comes across as a very humble man, who, when asked recently what did he think was his greatest achievement, went on to say that achievements are made by those who devote all their time in the pursuit of knowledge about one particular subject. In his own words, he just “flits about!” However, he is the face and voice of natural history for most people in Britain, and along with his dedicated crew, has brought us some amazing images, some of which takes months to film. If you can, try and watch ‘David Attenborough’s Top Twenty Moments’ (on the brilliant Eden channel), which includes such moments as the bower bird beautifully furnishing the entrance to his nest, only to be rejected by a passing female. Of course, the great man with the gorillas is still moving and incredible however many times you see it. The piece that received most votes was the Australian lyre bird, who imitates everything in the forest, including the camera shutter noise, which he picked up while being filmed, and the sound of the chainsaws destroying his rainforest habitat. Whenever a natural history programme starts and the familiar voice begins, there is something reassuring about it. You know you will be fascinated, entertained, and know you are so lucky to be able to be involved in the world of this great man, whose passionate interest in the world around him and its conservation cannot help but move us. The phrase ‘national treasure’ is one that Sir David himself does not really care for, but there is probably no living person who deserves the term more. May we have much more from this great man for many years to come. ABSOLUTE ABSOLUTE

During the match, official photographers’ pens are set up to give them excellent opportunities for action shots, which this sport offers in abundance. “It is a true family day out with over 90 trade stalls, refreshment areas and activities for the children. One must remember we run the Pony Club Championships here also later in the year and it is children that are our future players so we do encourage them to watch the sport,” says Liz. “Lord Cowdray likes to think of the Gold Cup still as a country house event. He has never wanted to turn it into a metropolitan show. It is a stylish and beautiful two weeks of international sport. Polo is still very much part of the Cowdray Estate’s heritage.” “As in any sport, the upkeep of the grounds is of prime importance,” says Julian Russell-Hayes, the Polo Ground Manager. “I have eleven pitches to look after and their surrounds totalling 192 acres. This still has to be looked after and mowed by my team of three and a couple of seasonal staff who help out.” “For Gold Cup Day it has to look pristine; and we make sure the spectators get involved in treading the divots during half time,” added Julian with a chuckle:

“Everyone has seen the film ‘Pretty Woman’ so knows what to do.” Bringing all the elements of this huge polo event together is down to Lt Col Paddy Bangham who is Operations Manager. Paddy took over the role in March 2006 having left the Army. There is no doubt his background has helped him no end. “Communication is the key element of any successful team, and making sure it is right on the day is what it is all about. You have the experts, the Polo Manager, Grounds Manager, Media Manager and not forgetting our Office Manager Janey Delow, who controls all the administration from the ticketing to links with the teams. If we don’t work as a team then we will have problems. Liz Higgins adds: “There have been major changes in ‘Health and Safety’ and this is now very important indeed. On Gold Cup Day we have eight players, possibly a dozen horses each, two umpires, third man, veterinary surgeons, doctors, pony welfare, trade stands, parking, paramedics and that’s without spectators! This means a meeting in May of the Safety Advisory Group including the local authority and environmental agencies along with our safety officer Ian Taylor.” “There have been some great memories of Finals Day over the years but the 2011 Gold Cup really proved to be one to remember. It finally all came together after torrential rain carried on right through till after lunch. Chris took the decision to delay the start of the match by half an hour and by the first throw-in the ground preparatory work which Julian and his team had put in enabled the mass of water to drain from the pitch. Paddy’s logistics and health and safety aspects worked well and in the end we watched one of the most exciting Finals of recent years.” The Veuve Clicquot Gold Cup tournament is: 19th June - 15th July 2012. ABSOLUTE INTERIORS Redeveloping a garden, or landscaping, is usually an expert’s pride. However, creating it yourself may not be as hard as you think. Our garden experts give us their top tips on doing it yourself down your main area ground. If you are opting for a lawn, you need to research which type of turf or seed will once again suit your soil. Speak to some experts at garden centres and research on the Internet the different options available to you. Turf is usually ‘on offer’ these days at many garden centres and will give you an ‘instant’ lawn, while seed will take some time and more care (watering etc), but can be better long term. If however, you are opting for a non-lawned garden, now is also the time to lay down those slabs, pebbles or decking. This may be the area of your project that you do need to call in the experts. Unless you are strong and patient, we would advise that a part of your budget is used for this. However, if you are able and willing, this final touch of your garden design will be the one that you see instant impact, so it can be a rewarding thing to do yourself. Don’t forget to design where that table and chairs will go for that well deserved cuppa!

summer.

Now, and through the coming weeks, thousands of metres of bunting, hundreds of hanging baskets and banners are being installed throughout the BID area to add to its vibrancy, and help give Brighton a summer-long festival feel. Brilliant Brighton is solely funded by 517 city centre businesses, who are investing nearly £1.8m up until 2016. As well as dressing the city for summer, Brilliant Brighton also provides the City Centre Ambassadors; teams of people who crack down on crime in the city by catching shoplifters and dealing with anti-social behaviour. When they aren’t fighting crime, they are always on hand to help members of the public find their way around. The businesses also pay for the spectacular yearly displays of Christmas lights, which make Brighton sparkle through the winter months. On top of that, www.brilliantbrighton.com is a new website for the BID businesses to advertise their offers, or let people know about events that they are holding in the BID area. It’s only been running for a few months, and already has a following of over 1400 on twitter. Gavin Stewart, BID Manager said: “City centre businesses are committed to making Brighton a better place for people to live, work and visit. It is a testament to their belief in Brighton, that amongst the national and international backdrop of fiscal tightening and austerity measures, they are digging deep and finding projects to make Brighton city centre a great place to be.”

upper arms can be upsetting for some women in their quest to shape up and get slim. But with sensible eating and regular systematic training, you can regain control! Cellulite is caused by fat cells enlarging in size over time. The tissue between the fat cells doesn’t stretch and so creates the effect of uneven bulges on the surface of the skin. So, how to fight your cellulite? 1. Eat sensibly - Eat a range of foods including leafy green vegetables, lean meat, fish or quality proteins - and you must include some form of carbohydrates. They’re essential to our

well being but, like any food, if you over-indulge your body will store the excess as fat. You must also include healthy fats (fish oil, omega 3, flaxseed oils, olive oil, avocados) plus a healthy amount of nuts and seeds. Quantities depend on your current weight and how you want to look in the future. 2. Eat regularly – ideally every 2-3 hours to stabilise your blood sugar and stop your body holding onto excess fat. 3. Train regularly - Training causes the calorie deficit that you need to lose weight and releases endorphins that make you feel good. The size of the muscle filaments increases, which in turn increases your metabolism so you can burn fat - even when at rest. 4. Systematic training - By applying yourself to a structured training programme, you can see which type of exercise produces the best results for you. We are all individual and

ABSOLUTE DENTAL COLUMN

EYES DOWN FOR AN ORAL TEST! This month, Sandy Furlong, Hygienist at Marina Dentalcare sets a quiz for a fun way to learn about dental care. What will your answers reveal? 1. Using a power toothbrush is faster than using a manual one. A Obviously it goes faster therefore it must be faster. B It is exactly the same. C It takes longer than using a manual brush. 2. Mouthwash is a vital part of your oral care routine. A As mouthwash is 90% water, what good can it do? B It is not vital, but it can be a useful vehicle for ingredients that can be helpful e.g. Flouride. C Yes, it is vital and should be part of your daily routine as it flushes out plaque and debris from between the teeth. 3. Going to the dentist every six months is not necessary as when things go wrong it is fairly obvious. A So true. B The most important part of dental care is not fixing things that have gone wrong it is preventing them from going wrong as you only get one set of teeth and every part of them is precious. C It is good to do that as oral care is not just about teeth and so things going wrong are not always so obvious. 4. Floss should be part of every ones routine. A Can’t stand the stuff and my teeth are ok. B I hate it but know that you must do it so I try to do it once a week. C It is not a panacea for all dental ills but another useful technique in some instances. 5. Interdental cleaning is vital. A Absolutely. B What is that ? C It is very damaging and make my gums bleed. 6. Toothpaste is the most important aspect of home dental care. A Yes, particularly the ones that are multi-tasking and save teeth and gums. B Useless stuff just makes the whole procedure taste better. C Another very helpful vehicle for useful ingredients.

D Magic stuff that can give you a Hollywood smile and get you a mate. 7. Wooden toothpicks have been around for a long time and have stood the test of time they should be used often. A I prefer a silver toothpick, it is so much more stylish. B Yes I often use a matchstick - it is cheaper C Anything that just has straight lines and is not flexible is not likely to clean anything in your mouth, as your mouth has no straight lines in it. D I must confess to being a fan of the plastic ones that you find in steak restaurants. 8. The invention of little interdental brushes has improved dental health for all of the people who use them. A Never a truer word spoken. B At those prices, I could have a new set of teeth anyway. C Very fiddly, and they bend, cannot be doing with them. Answers 1 (B) My patients sometimes complain that a power toothbrush takes too long which tells me more about how much time they are spending on there mouth care than about the brush they are using. It usually takes about 2 minutes to thoroughly brush all of your teeth - sometimes a little longer if you have difficult spaces, or you have missed a clean. Using both types of brush should take about the same length of time. The results just depend on the skill that you have with whichever type of brush you are using. 2 (B) Using a mouthwash often has limited value. It cannot remove plaque and unless it is a specific one that has been professionally recommended, it may just be a way of washing your mouth out with alcohol which is not a good idea on a daily basis. Some mouthwashes are, however, very useful as they are a carrier for useful additives. Worth checking this out if you use one on a daily basis.

3 (C) Your dentist and hygienist are not just looking at your teeth. There are many things that can deteriorate and cause problems over time that can be prevented if noticed early enough. Oral cancers are on the increase and are always easier to treat when spotted and treated quickly. All gum conditions need to be monitored to prevent deterioration. 4 (C) Floss is useful for removing food that is stuck between the teeth, and it can remove plaque on convex curves. It cannot remove plaque on concave curves and as you are not a cat with round or cylindrical teeth, then floss can never give you a completely thorough clean. 5 (A) Interdental cleaning is vital. Without this cleaning the gum in between the teeth will become inflamed. This will mean that when it is touched it will bleed. Hence the reason that on first using, or infrequently using an interdental cleaner, your gums often bleed. 6 (C) Toothpaste has had fluoride in for over 30 years now and the young have the teeth to prove it. Toothpaste is not in itself a panacea for perfect dental health, but it has helped people improve their dental health by including helpful additives. The incredibly small amounts of fluoride applied to the teeth on a daily basis, together with the encouraging effects of taste, have all contributed to the better dental health of the young of today. 7 (C) Toothpicks are not very helpful as their ability to fit around teeth is very limited. Floss is a better remover of a piece of food that is uncomfortably trapped between the teeth. 8 (A) The effective removal of plaque from the gum line in the interdental space has helped more people prevent and treat periodontal (gum) disease than any other method of care.If you don’t do it consider doing so, and if you do, you cab expect to keep you mouth disease free for a long time. For any questions or advice please email info@marinadentalcare.co.uk or call for a Hygienist appointment on 01273 628899. ABSOLUTE

six-month closure to carry out over £2 million worth of refurbishment and improvements. Celebrating its 140th anniversary this year, the centre is back to its original splendour, after months of painstaking renovation of ornate Victorian carvings and fluted columns by a team of specialist stonemasons. Formerly Brighton Aquarium, its visitors will, for the first time in its history, be taken into the vast warren of corridors and ante-chambers for a brand new ‘Behind The Scenes’ tour, to witness breeding, food preparation and life-support facilities. And in addition to resident giant green sea turtles Lulu and Gulliver, tropical sharks and hundreds of other sea creatures from shrimps and starfish to seahorses and cow-nosed rays, visitors will also see a new Jellyfish Discovery attraction. SUSSEX FOOD AND DRINK Judging underway for best in Sussex

J

udges for the Sussex Food and Drink Awards 2012/13 are in the throes of selecting a shortlist of the very best food and drink producers, farmers,

butchers, young chefs, food/farm shops, farmers markets and eating places in Sussex, to be announced at the South of England Show later this month. Kevin Powell, Joint Senior Partner of Knill James, sponsors of the Farmer of the Year award, explained what it is they are looking for, “This is our fourth year of sponsoring the award and we have extended the criteria for the Farmer of the Year to recognise farmers who have really gone the extra mile to promote Sussex fare and farming. For example, they might have made use of new technology or techniques in meeting the challenges of sustainable farming, shown an innovative approach in meeting the needs

of an ever more discerning public or been notable for their economic contribution to the county and its community.â€? Sponsors of the Best Sussex Eating Experience, Mayo Wynne Baxter, will continue to focus on eating places promoting local Sussex produce. Said partner Simon Baillie-Hamilton, “We will be putting forward around ten of the best restaurants, cafĂŠs and food pubs in the county. By involving judges at a much earlier stage, some of the smaller restaurants and cafĂŠs, who may not enjoy the same footfall as the larger eateries, will have an even better opportunity to get involved this year.â€? Likewise, for sponsors of the Sussex Food Producer of the Year award, The Southern Co-operative, the focus will be on local. Phil Ponsonby, Chief Operating Officer for Food & Retail Services, said, “The process of shortlisting will be a challenge given the quality and range of Sussex food producers, but will enable us to give much greater support to those who

A buzz down at the Coast!

ABSOLUTE RESTAURANT REVIEW

Rishma Patel discovers a lively atmosphere and great food at Coast to Coast on Brighton Marina’s waterfront

O

n a rare sunny weekend in May, my partner Paul and I decided to head down to Brighton Marina for an evening out. It was early evening and the sun was still beaming down so we had a stroll along the waterfront and noticed that Coast to Coast was probably the busiest venue along the promenade - always a good sign. The restaurant was packed with friends enjoying the lovely terraced area outside with pre-dinner drinks and families dining alfresco. On entering the double fronted glass doors we were greeted by the buzz - this place just oozes atmosphere and ambience. The décor is upmarket with bare bricked walls, low lighting, an open kitchen and lots of American memorabilia from the East Coast to the West Coast – to sum it up in two words - it’s cool! Our waitress Paula brought our drinks over. I had the amazing Black Raspberry cocktail and Paul enjoyed a Mojito. The menu was comprehensive and I decided on the Louisiana Chicago Wings to start with. Paula warned me that they are hot and she was not wrong. They were HOT! The chicken wings were generous in size and lovely and plump, charred with a subtle smoky flavour, and covered in a lovely lip-smacking sauce; it was tasty even though it was hot, and the creamy blue cheese dip soon mellowed things down and balanced the dish out. Words cannot describe how moreish these wings are! Paul had the Spicy Calamari - meaty tender flesh encased by a crispy spicy crumb finished off with a

fresh grating of parmesan and a chargrilled lemon to bring out the flavour of this delicate dish, each morsel finished off with a tangy tomato dipping sauce. The chefs had already done an great job and set a very high standard. I have often found that when restaurants are busy the service and quality of the food is sometimes not up to scratch, but the staff at Coast to Coast are really organised. Everyone around us was enjoying themselves too, which really added an element of fun to the restaurant, while Motown music played softly. Next up we had to decide on our mains, steak, pizza or chicken? I asked Paula for some help and she recommended the Cajun Chicken Melt from the specials menu. Paul ordered the 8oz Casterbridge Steak which is acclaimed as their best steak and he was advised that this should be served medium rare. Paula bought our mains over and checked if we would like any more drinks and if everything was ok, which, of course, it was! The food was so well presented; Paul’s steak arrived on a wooden board with a large plaque of slate in the middle, on top was the 28-day dry age steak from the west country. This was a lovely cut of lean rump, the meat was tender and moist and melted in the mouth (I had a sneaky taste), accompanied by straw fries, sweet roasted vine tomatoes and a deliciously crunchy creamy slaw. My Cajun chicken breast was huge, a lovely big piece of succulent chicken gently spiced with Cajun seasoning topped with crispy bacon and oozing with Monterey Jack cheese, it was wonderful! The accompaniments were all American too, corn on the cobs and onion rings and the Budweiser Barbecue Sauce was lovely sweet, sour and tangy - the perfect condiment to dip fries into. We wanted to try a desert but unfortunately hadn’t left enough space. If you want an exceptional meal, good time and great service then your next meal should be at Coast to Coast. Manager, Andy and his team are doing an exceptional job. I know we will surely be returning again in the next few weeks with friends in tow to sample the lip-smacking Louisiana Chicken Wings again and squeeze in a pudding this time.

s Chichester Festival Theatre celebrates 50 years of internationally renowned work, Festival 2012 looks to the future with Theatre on the Fly, a temporary new space for the next generation of theatre-makers and theatre-goers. Theatre on the Fly echoes the exciting traditions of The Tent, a second auditorium which appeared opposite the Festival Theatre in 1983. The Tent nurtured a generation of emerging theatre-makers such as Sam Mendes and housed productions which were often more experimental than those on the main stage. The success of The Tent prompted the creation of the Minerva Theatre on the same site. With the support of the Heller Foundation and Arts Council England, three young directors have trained at Chichester Festival Theatre during the last five years. Now, their debut Chichester productions – Blue Remembered Hills, Playhouse Creatures and Fred’s Diner - will be at the heart of the Theatre on the Fly season. The space will also house an eclectic season of late night comedy, live music, cabaret and much more. In the best traditions of the original Festival Theatre, the temporary space will be built with community support from B&Q, who have sponsored the construction, Friends, Youth Theatre members, supporters and anyone else who wants to take part in the creation of this spectacular structure. Scent, Sound and Sentiment A

rt at five is pleased to present ‘Scent, Sound and Sentiment’, an exhibition showcasing the work of three accomplished artists:

Yvonne Coomber, Paul Bennett and Catriona Millar. Running from the 2nd-10th of June, the show reflects on the most emotive moments of summer. Yvonne Coomber’s work is an exquisite tapestry of colour, innocence, romance and freedom, transporting the viewer to the magical places of their memories. Enhanced by glitter and a spirit of enchantment, her sparkling florals are a poetic expression of her love affair with the landscape. Paul Bennett’s exceptional semi-abstract seascape and landscape paintings are the result of spontaneous marks, partially visible layers and rich textures, all capturing the essence of a hazy recollection. His scenes are infused with memory and experience, but are never tied to any specific region or time, inviting the viewer to generate their own sensory experience of solitude and intimacy. Catriona Millar is recognised as one of Scotland’s foremost figurative painters and has captivated and delighted art collectors across the world with her unique style. Like a novelist or playwright Catriona combines her own life experience and an imaginary world in her work, resulting in a highly distinctive display of colour, pattern, warmth and Ob-La-Di by Catriona Millar

TREATS GALORE!

Mad about cruising!

Chestnut Tree House children meet Simon Cowell and become TV stars

Scott Anderson on the reasons cruising has remained a popular holiday choice

I

I

n the last few weeks, children and families at Chestnut Tree House have been treated to some rather special visits and have met some big names

in the world of showbiz, culminating in a live broadcast on ITV Daybreak in May. The first big surprise was TV celebrity, Simon Cowell, arriving by helicopter for a private visit to the hospice. He took the time to have a chat with all the children and families at the House, signed autographs, joined in with some budding stars in the Music Room and even took part in a question and answer session. Simon invited four lucky youngsters to enjoy a VIP trip to the rehearsals of ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent show on May Bank Holiday Monday, and for them to meet fellow judge, David Walliams, and presenters, Ant and Dec. The foursome also got to sit in the judges’ chairs and have a chat to Simon while being filmed by ITV Daybreak. Tempting though it was, they did refrain from pressing the big red buzzers on the judges’ desk! The final surprise came on Monday 21 May when ITV Daybreak presenter, Gethin Jones, turned up at Chestnut Tree House, bringing with him international band, Cover Drive. The four piece band from the Bahamas led a music session for all the children staying at the House and two of the families were interviewed about the care they receive from Chestnut Tree House and how invaluable it is to them. The visit was broadcast live to mark the beginning of Children’s Hospice Week (18 – 25 May 2012), the national celebration and awareness-raising week for children’s hospice services across the UK.

have just been in Barcelona, for the naming ceremony of a new cruise ship, Riviera, from Oceania Cruises. I was fortunate enough to cruise on her for a few days and have to say she is a beautiful ship. It got me wondering - why are cruises so popular? For one, they offer incredible value for money. The cost of your cruise will not only include your accommodation, but all your food and onboard entertainment too. Destinations. You wake up in a different country every morning! Cruising offers the chance to see a new place every day – and you dock close to city centres too – perfect for exploring and discoveromg. Where can you cruise? If it’s got a coast you can pretty much cruise there! From the UK you can cruise to Scandinavia, Canary Islands, the Mediterranean, Caribbean and even New York. Durations range from 3-day taster cruises to much longer – even round the world cruises lasting up to 115 days! Or you can fly to the embarkation port and sail from there. In the Mediterranean these are likely to be Barcelona, Venice, Athens, Istanbul, or Rome, all perfect cities for a day or two pre-cruise stay! For Brits the Mediterranean and Scandinavia are the most popular destinations, followed by the Caribbean.

“Cruising offers the chance to see a new place every day...” Families. If you want an incredible value-for-money holiday where all generations of the family are accommodated, then look no further than a cruise. With cruise lines sailing from Southampton and Dover there is no airport hassle, just drive down and jump on. The onboard children’s counsellors will entertain your kids with fun, games, treasure hunts and more, allowing parents to spend quality time together. The kids get to make new friends, all in a safe and secure environment. For a lot of families this is the only chance for all members to be together – they can all do their own thing during the day and meet up in the evening for a gourmet meal to discuss their days activities. Stress free and relaxed! For those looking for a more adventurous holiday, then there are expedition cruises taking you round the coast of Borneo, to the deepest parts of the Amazon, to the Arctic to see polar bears and down to Antarctica to discover the great white continent. With a cruise, the world really is your oyster.
