to grasp our nation, you really cannot ignore its due presence. However, having a slightly ‘marmite effect’ it seems you either love it or hate it. Over the last few weeks I’ve heard grumbles from people saying they’re ‘just not interested’ and cannot understand what all the hype is about. In fact, I’d say I heard far more support for the Jubilee celebrations (I wonder if the few days off of work helped!) Meanwhile, I’ve heard from others that they have their

lucky handful of tickets and can’t wait to join in the celebrations and cheers. One thing we cannot ignore, is that in these rather austere times, having the Jubilee and the Olympics here in the same year couldn’t really happen at a greater time. Lets be honest, our country needs tourists, and the revenue that they bring, more than ever. And with the magnitude and competition between countries that hold the Olympics each year growing, I am sure that our humble country will put

hope we will revel in the same optimism after this two-week event, gaining gold in more than one way. Our regular columnist Tim Parker was one of the lucky few to have attended the Olympics back in 1948 as a child. And how different some things were then. One thing that comes across from Tim’s recollection as being the same today however, is the excitement it brought to the nation. His story shows an interesting and rather humble insight to the Olympics of yesteryear where there was no money to fund a new stadium and the Olympic swimming pool was an old converted ice hockey rink. And yet it helped boost the country enormously. (Page 50) Whether you spend the Olympic fortnight in front of the TV, at one of the arenas or by escaping it altogether, I hope you enjoy yourself and the optimism it may bring. See you next month! As I sat there listening, I thought that what we were getting was so much more than a tidy hem; it was fresh and innovative, it was the future of where fashion might take us, and that this was perhaps a designer that later down the line might be the one being featured in Vogue, and that we were amongst the first to see their journey.
“So my fashion advice for this month is stop looking in the glossy mags and get out into Brighton.” It is upon this very basis that Fashion East was developed in conjunction with London Fashion week, to give the younger and poorer (fashion

What’s going on....?
RUSSIAN NIGHTS PJ, aka Peter Jarrette, Brighton’s favourite socialite, with the latest in great new venues, events and happenings
Dear diary The celebrations continue. As I write it is the 23rd anniversary of my marriage to the lovely and all-knowing Karin BarnesJarrette. Last month we also enjoyed, or some avoided, (but I cannot imagine how), Queen Elizabeth II’s Jubilee celebrations of 60 years on the throne. I managed one or two events in Brighton to commemorate our Queen’s mega-milestone, the last of which was a night at Havana Spoon at the invitation of Jemma Garrett of Hove’s popular Sun Lounge Salon. So, as the Queen rounded off her year of touring, I began the latest round of my Liz Bishop and her partner own touring with five trips in and out Alex Thirwell of Moscow, and to several Russian cities performing for audiences of over 30,000 people in the Melodies of Bony M tribute band. I have just stepped off several jets and motorcades from our most recent gig, an open air 230th birthday celebration for the town of Ishim in Siberia. These trips are beyond glamorous, with police escorts, bodyguards and interpreters to oversee our every need. It’s been a rush-rush month to get it all in as I also juggled my schedule to take in as much of Liz Bishops’ thoroughly enchanting and hectic Brighton Fashion Week. I managed the launch party for that and the main Zeitgeist catwalk show in the gorgeous All Saints Church in Hove. My fashion face that night was created by the talented Ange Watson of Yawoma make-up and my blonde top (my hair) by Vicky Allen at Usual Suspects Salons. I missed the fabulous Ailsa’s show with all her top girls in the ready-to-wear, as I was worn out myself! Boo-hoo! I expect sharp words from the slick designer when next we clink flutes! I flew in from Moscow, again, to bundle myself, Karin and my dedicated photographer Melissa Buchanan up to London to attend the official UK book launch for Lady Colin Campbell’s book on the Queen Mother, The Untold Life of Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother which is on the New York Times Best Seller List giving my old friend Candace Bushnell a run for her money with her latest series of Sex and The City spinoffs about the young Carrie Bradshaw stories. Now, before I fly back to Moscow I am off to the opening of TV Vet Marc Abraham’s new Grove Lodge Vet practice in Southwick with Zoe Ball stepping up to the ribbon plus signingoff my own original artwork for the cover of my Brighton novel Bags of Fish For Cats: Brighton Babylon! The wonder of Worthing
My husband John and I have had to move from our home in Shepherds Bush, and so temporarily relocated to Worthing. I lived in Worthing for many years before moving to London, and, as so often happens, took it for granted. Now I have returned, I see it in a new light as a visitor, and realise just what a great place it is. I have found out once again how good it is to live on the coast. During our visit, we have often taken a walk along the prom, enjoying the extremely fresh air, and the feeling of freedom you get when looking out to sea. Worthing is nice and flat, so walking is a pleasure, and it is just the right size - not too small and sleepy, but not big and lonely like many towns. There is a bustling pedestrianised centre, and many little villagey areas such as Rowlands Road (dubbed Worthing’s West End) near where I am staying, and the Steyne area, close to the bowling greens, with its own atmosphere. And what about Ambrose Place? One of the most delightful streets you can ever walk down. The town, like many others, got assaulted in the sixties and seventies with some terrible buildings, which we still have to live with. The best example is the hideous seafront car park and bowling alley (please demolish), which sends a shiver down the spine when you compare it to the beautiful and majestic old buildings that have been gracing the seafront for centuries. But, some more recent builds have been executed with great sympathy to the surroundings and fit in beautifully. The old Lido swimming pool, which has now been gone for many years, is a beautiful little leisure area and seems to have been a part of the seafront forever, and there is an exciting new art-deco style building in place of the old Warnes Hotel. The old unattractive Aquarena swimming pool is being demolished and a swanky new swimming complex is going up. And the old Beach Hotel is almost demolished and some flats are due to be erected. Let’s hope they keep up the good work and make them good looking and in keeping with the surroundings. Many people have an image in their heads that the town is just for old and retired people. Some of our friends have asked when we are getting our mobility scooters, when we’ve said we’re staying in Worthing. But that is patently not the case – Worthing is lively, and we have found that there is a lot more going on than there is in our London area. Since arriving we have seen about 20 live music acts in local pubs. All good quality and well attended. At home we have never seen live music in a local pub – they appear to be more concerned with getting their gastro menus right, forgetting that people need to let their hair down sometimes. Having enjoyed our stay so much, we are now thinking of relocating permanently to this lovely town. Retiring? No, not yet. Luckily I can work anywhere with my Apple Mac, and my husband has been getting ideas about becoming a fisherman…

Suits you, sir Local crooner Matthew vanKan on his search for the perfect suit. Photographs by Stephen Lawrence

He is...
Gresham Blake Since Blake set up shop over a decade ago in Brighton his sales and celebrity following has sky rocketed. He has developed a reputation for delivering traditional high-end tailoring complete with a contemporary urban edge and playful twist. His approach is a world away from the formality fostered by some of the more traditional tailoring houses. Bending the conventions and adding unexpected details and embellishments has made him popular with Hollywood actors, rock royalty, comedians and art world heavyweights. Christian Slater, Ray Winstone, Plan B, Banksy, Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon are among the many celebrated stars to have been dressed by him. In addition to bespoke tailoring, Gresham also stocks a ready-towear range of suits, coats, shirts, ties and accessories as well as luxurious knitwear. His new limited edition clothing range, E1 - made from fine cloths woven by a micro mill in Hackney – will be available in his Shoreditch and Brighton stores soon. His personal signature of fusing a classic cut with witty bespoke lining relevant to the client sums up the brand; sober on the outside and slightly mad underneath.
“Occupying a specific space in menswear, a Gresham Blake suit imparts a little bit of rock ‘n’ roll glamour to bespoke tailoring.“ 20
Matthew and Gresham looked through material swatches, and scoured images of sharp-dressed performers from the swing era, taking note of details to incorporate in the finished suit.
Including the initial consultation, Matthew attended eight fittings to ensure the perfect fit. Gresham is a strong believer that the customer should have his outfit ‘as he likes it,’ and not how he thinks it should be himself. He will adjust a suit until the customer is perfectly happy with the look and comfort.
Matthew vanKan Matthew is a modern day crooner with a passion for the legendary singers and songwriters of the swing era and 1950s big band sound. He honours the timeless music of Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole and other legendary entertainers. Brighton-born Matthew has been singing music of this genre for just two years, and now performs in the UK and around the world at private parties, corporate events, weddings, international hotel functions and in a few exclusive venues such as The Arts Club in Mayfair, where he appears each month. “I was asked to sing at a charity event at The Ivy Club London back in March 2011 and then started receiving enquiries from event planners for high end functions,” he says. “A lot of the gigs I do are black tie so I’d usually wear a tux but for other occasions I need a good suit and that’s were Gresham comes in. We scanned some fashion books looking at some Hollywood images and photos of the Rat Pack and alike, and pulled out different details to incorporate.” Matthew will be performing (in his new suit) at Bohemia, Meeting House Lane, Brighton, on Thursday 5th July from 9pm.
“I love performing at amazing venues in beautiful surroundings and what I wear has to reflect not only the music and era that it’s from, but also the setting I’m in.”

Shoreham Airshow WIN TICKETS!
Tornados to visit the RAFA Shoreham Airshow, with tactical role demonstation
I
t will be a first for this year’s Royal Air Forces Association (RAFA) Shoreham Airshow, being held on September 1st and 2nd 2012, which will be celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the RAF Central Flying School. The Royal Air Force has supported the show well this year by sending in a pair of Tornado GR4 Aircraft to perform their Role Demonstration from XV Squadron. This is not a normal aerobatic display as performed by other RAF Aircraft. Whereas the traditional display shows what RAF personnel can do, the Role Demonstration shows what the RAF is doing in support of UK and NATO troops on the ground in Afghanistan. The demonstration shows the kind of tactics and manoeuvres performed by RAF crews in their vital air support role providing a ‘show of force’ low fly-bys as well as the use of Brimstone and Paveway guided munitions. The Tornado crews of XV Squadron’s sister unit at RAF Lossiemouth, the famous 617 Dambusters Squadron have just been deployed to Afghanistan to take over from RAF Marham based crews to continue the vital role of providing battlefield reconnaissance and close air support. There are comments that the show lacks the full quota of fast jet displays at Shoreham. This will make up for that concern! It is worth remembering that it now costs £400,000 to put this event on over the two days. The cost of aviation fuel and aircraft takes up much of this. The event is also a charity show, supporting RAFA, and to date has given them almost one point seven million pounds funding. The ground attractions this year will be larger than ever catering for the

family, linked to new ground airside attractions. There will be lots of extra items for the children, with extended trade stands. A large funfair and craft tent, and more static aircraft displays will also be present. The Airfield attack with Spitfires, Hurricanes and German aircraft will be the central theme, and other displays confirmed to date include The BBMF Lancaster, RAF Hawk, Falcons Parachute Team (Saturday), Red Devils Parachute Team (Sunday), B-17G Sally-B Flying Fortress, Breitling (4 ship) wing walkers, Blades Award Winning Aerobatic Team, PBY-5A Catalina, Swip Team and Jet Provost. “More displays both in the air and on the ground are currently under negotiation,” said Derek Harber, acting airshow organiser. “We try to please all, but in the current economic climate we must take costing into consideration. Once again we are keeping ticket prices to the minimum as we are aware that often a day out now involves advanced budgeting.” “The 2012 Olympic Games have meant a re-scheduling of dates but we are sure that with this taken into consideration, we will have one of the south’s best airshows. The event is not a seaside event. It is a traditional airshow, where spectators can meet the crews and watch the displays from the UK’s oldest privately owned airfield, with the backdrop of Lancing College and Chapel. This makes it unique. It is also one of the pilot’s favorite venues,” said John Periam, Airshow Press Officer. Futuristic Home Sound High-end audio company Lawrence Audio, are producing products that seem to offer something utterly unique, both in performance and appearance. Located in Taiwan the company was founded in 1996 by Mr. Lawrence Liao. The Lawrence Audio Cello floor-standing speakers (pictured), retailing for £12,000, are an example of Mr Liao’s passion and talent combined. He is an award-winning artist, interior designer and musician with a passion for combining function with beauty in his speaker designs. The Cello speakers are finished in a gorgeous matte rosewood, which has a beautiful deep red orange colour with striking grain patterns. Each speaker weighs 88 pounds and is 49 inches tall, 11 inches wide and 18.5 inches deep. The frequency range is 32Hz to 40 kHz. The Cello’s stated sensitivity is (2.83V/1m) 90dB with an impedance of four ohms (minimum 3.2 ohms). In case you hadn’t guessed, the Cello speakers appearance is modeled off of the musical musical instrument and aesthetically looks like a piece of sculptured art. Utterly beautiful while having a musically engaging sound; we recommend this new design of speaker on the home entertainment market.

JuiceBuddy Mobile phones have come a long way since the models of the 1990s, but if there is one area in which a brand-new iPhone 4S still cannot hope to compete with those venerable handsets, it is battery life. With this in mind, California-based company Pacific Productions has unveiled the JuiceBuddy, an iPhone and iPod touch charger which is small enough to fit on a keyring.

The long tube shape of this laptop, which was inspired from the storage tubes that artists are using for storing large drawings, eliminates perception of the traditional book looking laptops. This multifunctional laptop has two working modes. When it is operating in full function mode, the laptop is unfolded completely and all peripherals are turned on. The main display is turned off and a smaller screen, attached with main body is turned on allowing the users to check and send mails when D-roll is under email mode. Once rolled up, all you have to do is wear it over your shoulder and away you go!

eter Ilic opened London’s first Little Bay restaurant in Kilburn in 1992, creating a new and original dining experience, serving great value European cuisine in its trademark opulent yet relaxed surroundings. Since the initial launch over 16 years ago, Peter has opened three further Little Bay restaurants across London, and the most recent one opened here in Brighton last year. Peter arrived in England in the mid-70s, having spent three years training at a catering college in his native Yugoslavia. He first worked at Claridge’s hotel as a commis chef before working his way through the ranks in a number of other renowned London kitchens. He opened his first restaurant, the Lantern on Malvern Road in North West London in 1982. Soon afterwards Peter opened two more restaurants, the Pigeon on Fulham Road and La Cloche on Kilburn High Road. His fourth restaurant, Just Around the Corner on Finchley Road, opened in 1984, which is where Peter originally introduced the ‘Pay what you think it’s worth’ concept. Peter has always maintained the same ethos across the Little Bay restaurants - to provide good European food with a French influence at fantastic prices, excellent service and the best atmosphere and value for money this side of the Channel. Little Bay restaurants are renowned for their unique, extravagant, Bohemian and relaxed style. At the Brighton restaurant, there is a great new menu to enjoy at very reasonable prices (starters ÂŁ2.55, mains ÂŁ5.45, desserts ÂŁ2.55). THE QUICK AND THE GOOD Champion hurdler David Greene says no to takeaways and yes to ‘Dai Greene’ Curry this summer
T
he latest research into the nation’s cooking habits shows that over six million (6.37m) Britons will be avoiding
stodgy takeaways in favour of savvy cook-at-home meals when watching the Olympic Games. A survey conducted by YouGov and cooking ingredients specialists, Very Lazy, reveals that only 1.4m (3%) of the population said they will order takeaways when watching the games this summer. The summer of sport, health and fitness has clearly gone to our heads as four times as many people said they would be making meals in under 20 minutes so they don’t miss any of the action cheering on our national athletes instead of opting for a fast food fix.
“Health and fitness is so closely associated with food and diet so it’s great to see people aren’t turning to fast food” To celebrate the championing of savvy cooking across the country, Very Lazy, best known for its convenient chopped garlic, chillies and ginger and delicious cooking concentrates, has teamed up with David ‘Dai’ Greene, World Champion hurdler. The brand has created one-off jars for the Welsh 400m hurdler, called ‘Dai Greene Curry’, re-naming one of its best selling concentrates, Thai Green Curry, in Dai’s honour. Rob Cottam, head development chef at Very Lazy, said: “Our attitudes to cooking seem to be shifting in the right direction and it may well be down to the hype and excitement created by the games this summer. Health and fitness is so closely associated with food and diet so it’s great to see people aren’t turning to fast food but quick food that can be easily prepared and is a much more cost-effective convenient meal.” Dai Greene, the 26-year-old British athlete, who has been given several of the personalised jars to take home to his family, said: “I’ve never associated my name with green ‘thai’ curry before, so this is a first for me! Luckily I prefer green thai to red thai as it’s the milder curry, so I’ll be asking my mum to cook up some Very Lazy curry and get the whole family feasting soon!” The Very Lazy range of cooking ingredients is available to buy at supermarkets including Asda, Tesco, Co-op, Morrisons and Sainsburys and online at www.verylazy.com.

ABSOLUTE HEALTH
Bless you... The sound of sneezes seems to be ever present at the moment. Yes, it is the dreaded hay fever season. But how can you prevent a bad case of this annoying ailment? Our health experts offer some advice
T
he sun is beaming down on us. The rays are lifting our spirits. The great outdoors really is once again ‘great.’ But oh dear, the handkerchiefs need to be on the ready.Yes, it is for a lot of us hay fever time again. A recent study has shown that in urban areas there has been a 3% rise year on year on pollen. But what seems like good news for plants is likely to cause extra misery for millions of hay fever sufferers. In hay fever sufferers, pollen triggers the release of histamine, which causes sneezing, itchy and watery eyes, and an increase in mucous production. Unfortunately in the case of allergy sufferers this response can be unnecessarily triggered, resulting in the classic hay fever symptoms. There are several easy steps that can be taken to avoid or improve attacks of hay fever. Follow them, and you may see an improvement and at last be able to enjoy an allergy free summer.
“Reduce your histamine levels by making sure you have a good intake of magnesium and methionine-rich foods. Good sources for these are sunflower seeds, nuts, oats and leafy greens.”
10 tips to avoiding hay fever this summer: 1. Ensure that all handkerchiefs and bed linen are clean. Cotton can carry pollen, hence triggering effects of hay fever. 2. Improve your diet. Eat more greens, onions and apples regularly. These foods are a good source of quercetin, a natural antihistamine. Eat plenty of berries too, such as blueberries, blackberries and elderberries, for their anti-inflammatory benefits. 3. Reduce your histamine levels by making sure you have a good intake of magnesium and methionine-rich foods. Good sources for these are sunflower seeds, nuts, oats and leafy greens. 4. Drink peppermint tea and chew on mint leaves. Peppermint contains a substance called rosmarinic acid, a powerful antioxidant that blocks production of allergy-producing leukotrienes. 5. Make a conscious effort to ensure you’re getting plenty of immuneboosting nutrients. Vitamin B6 and zinc play an important role in balancing histamine levels and supporting the immune system. 6. Be aware of outside risks in the summer months. Increased sunlight in the summer results in higher levels of pollution in urban areas, causing the immune system to react. A good all-round anti-oxidant supplement can increase your resistance. Try one that includes vitamins A, C and E, selenium and zinc. 7. For acute symptoms, the amino acid methionine, in combination with calcium, can act as an effective anti-histamine. Try taking 500mg lmethionine and 400g calcium twice daily. 8. Food intolerances can sometimes make symptoms worse. Try limiting common culprits such as wheat and dairy products for a couple of weeks to see if symptoms begin to improve. 9. Omega-3 oils are one of nature’s best anti-inflammatory nutrients. Include oily fish in your diet at least twice weekly, and supplement with a good quality fish oil or flaxseed oil. 10. Anti-inflammatory bromelain, a nutrient found in pineapple, is thought to be helpful for hay fever sufferers. Try fresh pineapple, but be sure to eat the core too, as this part is highest in bromelain. Bromelain is available in supplement form. For best results, it is often recommended to take bromelain alongside quercetin.

the weight slowly pile back on? But it worked, didn’t it? So you start again… Well, no. It didn’t work. This is yoyo dieting. By starving yourself or skipping meals your body goes into ‘starvation mode’, so any calories you do eat are stored as fat. Low calorie diets make you store fat by… 1. slowing down your metabolism (your ability to burn off fat) when eating normally again your body is confused and stores everything as fat 2. starving your body of nutrients, leading to health and hormonal imbalances. You need a balanced diet for your body

to work efficiently 3. ridding the body of excess water - your scales say you’re lighter and your clothes feel better, but you’re starving your body, preparing it for fat storage! 4. depleting your muscles. Increasing your muscle filaments keeps your body in shape and speeds up your metabolism - weight training is key in your battle against fat Don’t obsess over the scales! Muscle is heavier than fat. Measure weight loss by body fat testing and how loose your clothes are. Avoid excessive sugars (fructose, lactose, sucrose & alcohol!) and heavy carb meals - go easy on the bread, especially at night. Have everything in moderation but combine it with intelligent weight training and a cardiovascular programme which focuses on balancing your body inside and out - so you feel positive and confident as a mother, a wife and a business woman. alentino’s spring/summer 2012 show was pretty for many reasons, but the plaited up-dos were arguably one of the standout catwalk hairstyles of the season. Celebs so far spotted rocking this look are Alexa Chung at the Mulberry party in New York, Kirsten Dunst at the Sundance Film Festival, Pixie Lott just about everywhere, and Chloe Moretz, whose version was disheveled and casual at the Jason Wu for Target launch party in New York. The plaited up-do, or Braided Crown (as it’s known in this biz!) is easy to wear and suits all face shapes. Even if you’ve shorter hair you can wear this style as the plait can taken from the scalp, thus framing the face and giving grown out crops a chic
new look. It’s a savior if you’re growing out a fringe. The beauty of this style if you’re heading off to a festival is that you can do it on day one, and then concentrate on the music and mayhem! This look will transition from pretty and pristine on day one, to sexy and undone on day two as it relaxes. Day three? Simple… let it down and go with the retro crimped look seen on the catwalks of TOPSHOP UNIQUE, a style your up-do will have created all by itself! Get the look 1. Preparation is vital, you will need a clean foundation to achieve the glossy look this type of up-do needs. Once hair is cleansed apply a smoothing cream to ensure cuticles are flattened and hair is protected from heat. 2. Blow dry your hair while scrunching it to create waves, if you have naturally straight hair use a Denman Head Hugger round brush (£11) to create the waves and volume. 3. Once dry apply a little texturing product. Electric stylists love shu uemura’s new Volume Maker (£31.00). This precision applicator is the first of its kind and gives instant volume and root lift. 4. Part your hair using a tail comb, allowing a wide section of hair from the front of head to remain separated from the rest of the hair. Pull the bulk of your hair back and secure into a loose low ponytail, while allowing the hair in the front to remain separated. 5. Take the ponytail twist and pin sections randomly to the scalp to form a soft sexy bun. 6. Once the back of the hair is done take the loose section of hair from the front and French braid it loosely along the side of the head and pin its ends using hair grips close to the scalp to secure it. Finish with a little hairspray and you are good to go! For further details on Mark Woolley, Electric Haircare or any of the salons in the Electric group view the website www.electric-hair.com

ABSOLUTE LIFE COACHING
TAKE SMALL STEPS
This month, Absolute Life Coaching explains how making smaller achievable goals can be just as rewarding as aiming high
I
t is sometimes easy to set very ambitious goals in our lives, and there will be times when maybe, through no fault of your own, you are pulled off track. The loss of motivation or interest is a recognised side effect of someone who is failing to live up to their own expectations. Some goals that people set themselves can either be unrealistic, or unwieldy in time. It’s good to have long term dreams and aspirations, hopes and wishes, but if things don’t go to plan a sense of ‘not achieving’ can quickly set in. To avoid this from happening, set yourself shorter term, smaller and more easily achievable goals. It is very important for our everyday sense of well being that we feel in ourselves that we are achieving in some small but positive way. There will be times when each and every one of us will be reminded how precious and delicate life is. When mitigating
circumstances arise, such as a family member or close friend contracting a life-threatening illness, with the prospect of a solitary and uphill battle to survive, for that person every dawning day and every fading sunset takes on a new and enhanced meaning. By setting themselves tiny and achievable goals, they may start to see small but important changes beginning to take place. In times of adverse circumstances, it is said that our senses are sharply pulled into focus as we are forced to face our own mortality. Remember that when a person learns to juggle and drops a ball it isn’t failure but just the process of learning. If you are interested in Life Coaching please contact Georgina or Terrina at 079912206483. Terrina11@btinternet.com All our sessions are undertaken with the utmost confidentiality.

DON’T TANGO, OR DO THE TROPICANA! This month, Sandy Furlong, Hygienist at Marina Dentalcare discusses the hidden problem of acid in fruit and soft drinks
T
here are rules when it comes to advertising and marketing. These rules try to ensure that the customer is not misled into thinking that a product will perform or produce miracles. However, so often it would be more useful for the customer to know about the negative things that a product will do rather than be aware if its positive limitations. A wonderful case in point is the soft drinks industry. Most people are aware now that ‘Coke’ is not a drink to consume often if you want to keep your teeth intact. The drinks industry is aware that consumers are now more health conscious, consequently drinks often come complete with apparent ‘health-producing’ benefits. Parents are exhorted to make sure that their children have ‘5-a-day’, that is, five portions of vegetables or fruit. Many fruit products now claim to be one of those ‘5’. Sugary snacks are often replaced with fruit with the thought that fruit is good for you, and indeed it is, but there is a big BUT here. Fruit, fruit juice and many of the drinks and products containing them are very acidic. Teeth do not like acid Teeth are dissolved by acid. It is a painless procedure, during which the enamel and dentine just disappear. A happy tooth is one that is being gently bathed in saliva which is slightly alkaline. That tooth is not only safe, but is having its mineral salts replaced and the tooth surface gently repaired. ‘Do not eat sweet sugary snacks between meals’ used to be the dental health message. The word ‘eat’ is the important word here, in that it suggests that anything that you drink is automatically less harmful because you haven’t eaten it! But beware, fruit drinks can be anything but innocent, and can be as acidic as vinegar. Recently The Department of Health has shown official figures that dental problems were the third most common reason for children to be admitted to hospital last year 2011- 2012. Manufacturers are not required by law to
publish the acid levels in their drinks, as they are compelled to provide nutritional information. Consequently the acid levels in drinks with fruit acids, have not been to the front of parents’ minds, when choosing drinks for their children. Tropicana orange juice, Coppella apple juice and Innocent smoothies all had acid levels ranging between 3.3 to 3.8. Tooth enamel is destroyed at anything more acidic than 5.5, so these drinks all come in at the upper end of the acidity pH scale. This pH measure is a scale in which 7 is neutral and 1 is extremely high. Saliva is naturally slightly alkaline, so is slightly higher than 7. Plain tap water is neutral. One drink tested was Innocent’s This Water with lemons and limes. It had a pH level of 2.7 which is more acidic than vinegar at 2.9. The most acidic drink tested was Coca-Cola, at a pH of 2.5. Dr Kathy Harley Dean of the Dental Faculty at the Royal College of Surgeons was quoted as saying that many parents are unaware that the combination of high acid and sugar can destroy young teeth. She warned last year that 50% of five-year-olds have signs of damage to their tooth enamel, caused by excess acid in their diet.
“...beware, fruit drinks can be anything but innocent, and can be as acidic as vinegar.” Government advice states that everyone should have five portions per day of fruit and vegatables, fruit juice counting as one portion. Dr Harley endorses the idea that it would be better if children met that target by only eating fruit with meals, and that juice should be a ‘once a week’ treat. She also advises always rinsing the mouth out with tap water after drinking fruit juice of any kind, as this will buffer the acid and allow the mouth to return to its natural pH much more quickly. If left to the saliva flow to redress the balance, it will take over one hour for the mouth to return to a normal pH, (much longer
of course, for anyone who has an impaired saliva flow i.e. patients undergoing chemo or radiotherapy). Never allow children to sip fruit juice over a long period as this will mean that the teeth are under acid attack for a very much longer period of time. So, what would be a good drink for children? Milk unsweetened is always a useful drink for children. It contains calcium and vitamins which will help to maintain teeth and build tooth substance. However, that too is very slightly acidic, so again it would be best to stick to drinking milk at meal times. Unsweetened tea is no longer in fashion for children but this is a useful drink as it contains Fluoride which helps to strengthen enamel. Any fruit squash is always suspect, so encouraging your children to drink tap water is the safest drink for them. Bottled waters can be useful but be careful of the pH values again as some of these processed waters are not as neutral as you would expect. Check the label, some of the bottled waters do state the pH level, and make sure it is below 7. Normal Saliva is 7.4 in humans. If your child, or indeed you, drink fruit juice or any other acidic drink make sure that tooth brushing is not performed immediately after. At that time the enamel is slightly softened, swish with water and clean teeth a little later. Encouraging a faster saliva flow by chewing gum can be useful although not always socially appropriate. Again make sure it is sugar free. All of this sounds complicated and a bit of a bore, but with a little thought it need not be a problem but ignoring the advice and allowing gross acid erosion to occur can become a big problem as it is impossible to give you back the substance of your tooth once it has been lost. For any questions or advice please email info@marinadentalcare.co.uk or call for a Hygienist appointment on 01273 628899. ABSOLUTE

its ground-breaking Want to Work project in East Sussex. The project, backed by BrightonandHoveJobs.com and American Express, aims to introduce young jobseekers and the long-term unemployed back into the work place. The scheme offers free training courses and opportunities for work experience with dozens of Sussex companies. The East Sussex launch in Lewes, attracted more than 30 business owners keen to find out how they can play their part in bringing hope and encouragement to job hunters in the area. Prominent companies that have already signed up to support the project include Harvey’s Brewery, Sussex Downs College and Nuffield Healthcare. Founding sponsor and long-term partner Brightonandhovejobs.com encouraged businesses of all sizes to get involved. Partnership Manager, Georgina Angele told the Lewes meeting: “There are some truly amazing jobseekers waiting for that lucky break to get back into the work place. Whether, like us, you are able to offer an apprenticeship or even some work experience placements, I would urge all bosses to get behind this project and give people that chance.” The Want to Work project will reach out eastwards to Eastbourne later this year. It is looking for 100 Sussex companies to participate in the scheme. Anybody interested in getting involved can call Barry McLaughlin on 01273 878 261 or email him at barry.mclaughlin@albioninthecommunity.org.uk.

new information sign has just been erected which tells the story of ancient Ice Age Brighton as revealed in the internationally important cliff at Brighton Marina. Studying the cliff has uncovered a tale of long term climate change, including evidence for global warming 250,000 years ago, and dramatic Ice Age deposits such as the fossils of woolly mammoth, woolly rhinoceros and dwarfed horses. This rare window on deep prehistory, preserved in the middle of a modern city behind an Asda superstore, represents one of the best and most accessible records of ‘Ice Age’ climate change in north western Europe. Finds from the cliff include whale bones, marine molluscs and a Neanderthal
butchery knife made from flint. Dr Matt Pope, from University College London, gave a brief description of the geological and archaeological importance of the cliff site as the sign was unveiled in June. Dr Pope, who was born in Brighton and attended Varndean School, said: “The site is part of a rich record of Ice Age geology and early human archaeology in Sussex. The cliff here gives a humbling perspective on long-term climate change. “It’s been really exciting to work with Brighton & Hove City Council to erect this board. Widening public understanding of long-term climate change in such an immediate way is an important part of preparing the city for the challenges ahead.” ABSOLUTE

irroring the success of the first team, Brighton & Hove Albion’s celebrated children’s football coaching programme goes from strength to strength each year. With 39 courses across Sussex this summer, the club’s charitable arm, Albion in the Community (AITC), now reaches over 15,000 children a year through their holiday, after-school and residential courses. The summer is the busiest time for AITC’s popular courses, which are regularly attended by manager Gus Poyet and his players. Last August Gus visited the magnificent Ardingly College, home of AITC’s four-day residential holiday course for 9 to 15-year-old boys. The 16 full-size pitches, situated near Haywards Heath in West Sussex, enjoy excellent surfaces - the ideal place for youngsters to hone their skills under the watchful eye of fully-qualified Albion coaches. Perfect for young footballers who already play for a club and want to develop their knowledge in a professional training environment, the four days will include individual technical work, group-based and game-related practices, plus a question and answer session with Albion players or the manager. The cast of servants, including new characters Cara Theobold and Matt Milne, enjoyed putting their feet up and having a cuppa in aid of charity. Jim Carter who plays Butler Charles Carson said: “What could be more Downton Abbey than a good British tea party? We rather enjoyed having a break from serving the Earl and Countess of Grantham! We’re encouraging everyone to do the same, and pop the kettle on and have their own Blooming Great Tea Party for Marie Curie Cancer Care this summer.
“Marie Curie Cancer Care is asking people to hold a Blooming Great Tea Party this June and July to help raise funds for the charity. It can be as simple as a cuppa with colleagues, a vintage inspired tea party or even a larger party to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee.” The money raised from Blooming Great Tea Parties will help Marie Curie Nurses to provide more free care to people with terminal cancer and other terminal illnesses in their own homes.

JUBILEE ART AT THE LAUGHING DOG

n early June, Rolf Harris opened the doors of the specially-constructed Pop Up Art School at the Old Vic Tunnels in Waterloo, London, to artists of all ages and abilities, to pay tribute to the Queen. Rolf looked on as the artists were able to pick up tips and techniques from one of Britain’s best loved artists. Sixty artists in total, 10 artists per decade painted to capture from 1950’s to 2000, and eatured on the BBC programme Rolf Paints the Diamond Jubilee. Rolf was joined by TV presenter Anneka Rice, who also contributed to the painting challenge. As soon as the artists put down their brushes, Anneka worked through the night to transform the venue into a free pop-up art gallery. The Old Vic Tunnels were then open to the public for five days over the Jubilee weekend, and attracted over 3,000 visitors per day. Now the Diamond Jubilee Pop Up Art School comes to Brighton! The Laughing Dog Gallery, Brighton Marina, is showing two of the pictures that were produced by Brighton artists Serena Sussex and Patrick Bremer, who took part. As well as the pictures they produced for Rolf ’s exhibition you can see more of their work which is also on show. The ummer exhibition is now on. righton-based dealership Rivervale Mazda are showing continued support for the military by giving ABF The Soldier’s Charity, eight Mazda vehicles to use during their forthcoming event – The Alliance Trust Cateran Yomp. The ‘Yomp’ team challenge took place over the weekend of 30th June to 1st July in the picturesque region of Perthshire and Glen Angus in Scotland. The Alliance Trust Cateran Yomp is an annual group trek through the stunning Perthshire countryside. Yompers must complete the trek within 24 hours but have the choice to undertake either the bronze trail of 22 miles, the silver trail of 36.5 miles or the ultimate gold trail at 52 miles. The Yomp is not just a serious walking challenge, there are a few adventures, activities and surprises along the way.
Last year 240 participants took part, raising a staggering £250,000. Rivervale Mazda is no stranger to military charities and the dealership offers an allyear-round discount for all vehicles bought by or for the military. Rivervale provided this year’s charity event with a mixture of Mazda6 Estates, Mazda5’s and Mazda CX-5’s. The vehicles transported the volunteers and equipment used to create the activities and the refreshment stalls eagerly visited by participants throughout the trek. “We feel privileged to be able to help out such a great charity,” commented Neil Chapman, Rivervale Mazda Dealer Principal. “It is amazing to see what a great job the participants and volunteers do, it is equally outstanding to see how much money and awareness they
raise. This charity event gives us a great opportunity to show off our newest Mazda model, the CX-5 compact SUV. With its all-wheel drive, lightweight chassis and refined suspension system, this model is the best option to take on the remote regions of Scotland.” Money that has been raised during this event will help serving and former soldiers and their families. A percentage of the funds raised will go towards the Alliance Trust’s chosen charity, The Prince’s Scottish Youth Business Trust. monopoly MAGIC with
Woolley Bevis Diplock Charity championship had winners across the board
W
oolley Bevis Diplock LLP hosted a charity Monopoly Championship, culminating recently in a Grand Final.
The event proved to be a great success, with around 150 guests attending from businesses across Sussex to watch the final match. The evening also saw a live auction take place, exhibitions from local companies, fundraising games and a performance by local singers Close
Harmony, all compered by Nick Muston of Austin Gray, Brighton. The event raised nearly £7,000 and has been divided amongst three charities - The Argus Appeal, Albion in the Community and the Monopoly Champions’ choice: The Princes Trust. Holly Tootill and Shikha Datta from Thomas Eggar LLP Solicitors were the eventual winners of the Monopoly Championship. Derek Bredenkamp and Kirsty Jennings of Wilson Sandford Accountants were runners up, and Simon Sinnatt and Mark Worsley of Crown Office Row Barristers Chambers came in third. The cheque handover to Albion In The Community took place at the Amex Community Stadium, where the Grand Final was held. The monopoly champions
Cruising safely Scott Anderson discusses personal security on board
W
e often get asked by our clients how safe is it to cruise on board a ship - from a personal security point of view. This is, of course, very important, as on a land based trip you want to ensure that not only are your valuables safe, but that your own personal safety is not compromised. A holiday on a cruise is in fact very safe. Let’s look at a cruise and land based trip to a holiday home or rented apartment. Valuables On a cruise you have a safe in your stateroom. This is usually built into a cupboard or wardrobe and has a digital lock that you set when you first use it. They are not huge, however big enough for your phone, jewellery, money, watches, wallets, Ipods etc. You won’t need to put your passports in there as the ship looks after these for you. On a land-based holiday, I doubt your rented apartment will have a safe – so you are left to leaving your valuables under the bed or in a drawer. Security On board a cruise ship there are security officers that patrol the decks, and fire officers that make regular rounds, checking on all areas of the ship for potential fires and other disruptions – giving you peace of mind. In a land based hotel or rented accommodation I’m 100% sure they do not offer this.
“ You don’t have to worry about getting a taxi on your own back to the hotel or apartment - it’s just a few decks up.” For single travellers, especially ladies, a cruise offers a very social and safe environment as it is a self contained ‘town’ with restaurants, bars, club, lounges and entertainment all under one roof. You don’t have to worry about getting a taxi on your own back to the hotel or apartment - it’s just a few decks up. And there are cameras everywhere too for added security. A cruise just lends itself to be more social too - you see and meet the same the people over the course of a cruise, at dinner, in the bars and whilst you are on tours too. The ship can arrange all the port tours - again adding to your security that you will be safe on the tour and returned to the ship - in time before the boat leaves for the next port of call! ABSOLUTE
