I always feel like September is the gloomy end of the summer. Those butterfly tummy feelings of going back to school in September are oh so vivid to most of us, so perhaps that’s why it also feels like a slightly ‘end of the fun’ time too. Head of Accounts/finance: Adam Style
However, as this year proves, autumn can be a time of happening things in our fair city. For instance, the Brighton Comedy Festival arrives at the beginning of October bringing with it a plethora of top comedians (and their books of gags). ABSOLUTE FASHIONISTA
IT’S YOUR DAY Stylist and designer Natalie Wileman reveals her new bridal boutique
W
“...I am shunning the streets of West Street, Brighton, for a shopping weekend in Paris with my closest girlfriends.”
eddings have changed dramatically in the past few years. These days, anything goes, so when it comes to choosing your wedding day look, you don’t have to stick to those more traditional bridal designs. The best wedding day looks are those influenced not by what the magazines state, but those which are an expression of who YOU are! Choosing your wedding dress is quite possibly the most exciting bit of dress shopping you will ever do! Not to mention the most extravagant, and so it really is a chance to treat yourself to items that you will LOVE in years to come. Years ago, it was tradition for the (rather wealthy) bride-to-be to visit Paris to choose her wedding day lingerie along with her closest friend. I suppose this was an early day hen party, and this idea has inspired my own hen party in February, where I am shunning the streets of West Street, Brighton, for a shopping weekend in Paris with my closest girlfriends. While Paris maybe a little far to travel to get your dress and accessories, you still have the most fabulous excuse to gather the girls together, drink champagne and try on unique, once-in-a-lifetime dresses. So it should be done somewhere that first of all is welcoming, will give you the time you need to make that decision without entering a hard sales pitch, and with a stylist that will have fun with you! These features are at the heart of my own bridal boutique, Everything But The Girl, in Chichester, which I opened four months ago after almost a decade’s worth of experience in this industry. I wanted to open a bridal boutique where the bride was the focus, and the designs were cherry-picked and exquisite. I didn’t want the boutique to feel like
a traditional wedding dress shop, but more like a fashion boutique aimed at the bride-to-be. My collections have therefore been pieced together from both the leading names in the bridal industry such as Benjamin Roberts, Ellis and Mori Lee to name a few, but also mixed in with upcoming independent designers to give the collection an exclusive edge. Again, I have chosen accessories from fashion labels as opposed to the traditional wedding designers, such as our vintage inspired accessories labels Maria Allen and Lovett & Co, and have mixed the shoes with labels such as Vivienne Westwood for Melissa, with Wellington Boots. We will soon be introducing a designer room within the boutique, and I have already been invited to a number of shows for the new season, including David Fielden, Jesus Perio and Gosia Baczynska, which will help make my final choices for the boutique! All this makes me believe even more that your wedding day look should leave you feeling excited and should be an excuse for you to treat yourself. Tracey Emin was recently quoted as saying: “Sometimes the dress is worth more money than the money!” What more can I say! I am offering all Absolute readers an EXCLUSIVE 15% discount off any bridal gown purchased at Everything But The Girl boutique when quoting my column. It’s my wedding gift to you. Brighton and Hove have been married Fashion by Jess Eaton for years and everyone knows that racy Kemptown has been their fancy bit-onthe-side for just as long. Sauce! If they were to renew their vows Kate Moss’ favourite Brighton Roadkill designer Jess Eaton would design the breathtaking gown. One of Brighton’s star turns at our city’s annual Fashion Week, Jess has had her inspirational and controversial creations featured on the slender shoulders of Miss Moss in the latest issue of the orgasmic fashion tome LOVE. Brighton and Hove’s children are many, gifted and far-reaching. Dominic Von Trapp and Brighton band Sweet Sweet Lies myspace.com/sweetsweetliesmusic are blazing trails across France and Germany with their latest album written by Michael Hayes The Hare, The Hound and The Tortoise (Something Nothing Records). Their eagerly awaited single The Day I Changed is penned by Dominic himself who describes their sound as ‘Graduate Parlour Folk Music.’ Making waves too is our favourite electro-pop-indie-disco music makers Kovak. myspace.com/kovakuk The group, headed by the modelesque Annelies Van De Velde have turned out an exclusive BBC gig of their latest single Living the Dream (Kovak Records) at BBC Studios in London’s Great Portland Street for heavyweight industry insiders. I was happy to be invited along by the band’s manager Andy Hollis of 74Music Promotions. Both bands would make beautiful noise at Brighton and Hove’s wedding renewal reception! Of course my lovely friends, faces and hands at Victoria’s and Maryam’s Usual Suspects Salons would see to the loving couple’s beauty needs with their luxurious new brand of industry trending Label M products for across-the-board hair grooming needs. Usual’s latest signing, Kate Barnes, who has jumped ship from Carnival Cruises to join the team will take care of ceremonial manicures, pedicures, massages, dermatological facials and waxing! While on a second honeymoon, Brighton and Hove can enjoy Kate’s new shellac nails in fashionable colours and blinged to order. They last up to two weeks without chipping and on toes they last up to four weeks! Wedded bliss! Now that everybody is loved-up I’m off to reprise Sweet Sweet Lies my role as celebrity judge at TV Vet, author and international animal rights campaigner Marc Abraham’s annual Pup Aid Puppy Farming Awareness Day which is making its London debut on Primrose Hill. So alongside dedicated supporters Meg Mathews and I, we can expect stellar appearances from Simon Cowell and Kate Moss to name just a Kovak few...ding dong! Under pressure
Well, the Olympic Games were a triumph, and our haul of medals has given the nation a great lift. The theme was ‘inspire a generation’, and I have no doubt that thousands of young people, and maybe some older ones, will have been inspired to take up rowing, cycling, running and many, many other great sports, including the newly introduced events like ladies boxing and taekwondo. There were a few problems, especially at the beginning, when many seats were unoccupied, much to the disgust of those who had tried for tickets and failed. This is a situation that should never have occurred, and there should have been a contingency plan available to make sure that no seat was left empty, when people didn’t show up. An unsettling aspect of the Games themselves that struck me, was the extreme pressure put onto certain participants, by the expectations of their performances. Swimmer Becky Addlington was a surprise double gold medal winner four years ago, when she wasn’t expected to do so well. Today, she is a household name, with the whole of Great Britain watching as she tried to retain her two golds at the home games. She brilliantly won two bronze medals this time, and accepted them graciously, but you could tell by her demeanour before and after the races, just what a great load there is on her shoulders with the pressure to perform – and be ‘the best’. In another rather disturbing occurance, the expected favourites in the men’s double skulls narrowly lost out to Denmark in the final. The two Brits were so distraught, they could hardly climb back onto the pontoon, and Sir Steve Redgrave went down to meet them, and had to physically lift one of them to his feet! At the painful interview, they were apologising for letting people down. This after they had just won an Olympic silver medal! The success of the other rowing teams and thus the expectations on these two athletes was just too much, and, although they did a fantastic job, the result was like a punch in the stomach for both of them. This can’t be right. It is difficult to know how to deal with this dilemma – of course it is great that everyone is so passionate about their country’s athletes, and we should never discourage that. But perhaps we should put more emphasis on the strength of the performance, than on the result (and we should place fairer attention to all medals won, not just to the gold).Young athlete Lawrence Clarke was pleased and surprised that he made the finals of the 110m hurdles sprint, and equally thrilled to take fourth place. Although he did not get a medal, he, and the nation, were delighted with his performance on such a big stage. So you don’t need to gain a medal to be a winner and make a name for yourself at the Olympics. This is the true spirit of the Games. Perhaps we should encourage our sportsmen and women to give their all and do their best, with not so much of the ‘Go for Gold’. This would allow them more easily to embrace the words of the great Rudyard Kipling and ‘meet with triumph and disaster, and treat these two imposters just the same.’ ABSOLUTE

Turn Up The Heat Open Fires A large open fire creates a stunning focal point, bringing warmth and comfort to a living room. If you have a chimney and fireplace, then it could also be more simple than you think. Even if a chimney has been closed for many years, it could still be a simple job for a chimney sweep to come and clear it for you. From then on after, it will need to be swept at least twice per year (this is an important measure to take to prevent house fires). Once you have investigated if it is possible, you can then go about selecting the style and type of fire surround, mantle piece that you desire. From architectural salvage yards to fireplace suppliers, you will find a choice of modern and traditional styles ranging through different eras.
Electric Fires Electric fires have come on a lot over the years since just being an orange glow of plastic looking logs. Gone are the days of that artificial look. There are many sleek-looking modern electric fires currently on the market. From blue hues to pebble effect beds, they make a nice feature and give instant warmth when needed. When not needed however, many electric fires have an option of just using the light with no heat giving a pretty hue to your room.

As the cooler months arrive on the horizon, it’s the time to check that your home is fully equipped. Don’t get left out in the cold this winter
Central Heating Central heating is a good option, or an additional option, to any modern equipped home. Cost effective, central heating with radiators heats a home quickly and can then stay at a temperature using a thermostat, thus keeping an eye on costs. It can also be left on a timer, so you can make sure your home is toasty and warm when you wake in the morning or return from work in the evening.
“From architectural salvage yards to fireplace suppliers, you will find a choice of modern and traditional styles ranging through different eras”
Underfloor Heating underfloor heating is a modern and high spec feature in a lot of homes today. It is a good, and luxury, way of heating up floors in the colder months, while also being a good selling point for homes in today’s market. Because of the way in which the heat is distributed through under the floor, it is thought to also be a more efficient way of heating a home. It gains and sustains a more consistent heat than radiators, but of course it depends on whether it is practical to install it in your particular home.

Sailing from nearby Portsmouth, you’ll find it’s so easy to get to, and because you can take your car there’s no hassle, not to mention extra costs for baggage or parking. Better still, with their onboard service and facilities, you’ll find it’s a great alternative to flying Fabulous France and Spain As the summer fades and the harvests begin, France and Spain become a blaze of sumptuous colour – making for a perfect time of year to indulge in fine wine and cuisine. With the weather also still fine, it’s great for walking, cycling, golfing or simply sitting back and enjoying the beautiful scenery. In France, explore Normandy’s medieval towns such as Caen, Bayeux and even the magnificent Mont St Michel, or simply relax in some of Brittany’s tranquil coastal resorts such as St Malo and Dinard. All are within an easy drive of Brittany Ferries’ arrival ports. Or for some extra summer sun and a taste of ‘real’ Spain, take an overnight cruise aboard one of their luxurious cruise ferries to Bilbao or Santander and discover the delights of northern Spain. 1 Now Is Good Now Is Good is the new film from Ol Parker (writer of Best Exotic Marigold Hotel ), starring Dakota Fanning, Jeremy Irvine (War Horse), Kaya Scodelario (Wuthering Heights, Skins) and Paddy Considine (The Bourne Legacy, Submarine). The film is based on the novel ‘Before I Die’ by Jenny Downham and is based in the heart of Brighton. It’s a romantic story of 17 year-old Tessa (Dakota Fanning) and her decision to live her life to the fullest after receiving a terminal diagnosis. Writing herself a type of ‘bucket list’, Tessa goes through a host of new experiences, including falling in love. In cinemas 21st September.
The Over the Moon Festival is held on 14th - 16th September just outside of Brighton on the Sussex Downs. It is an intimate, non-corporate affair with a strong emphasis on environmental awareness. The event is predominantly powered on solar energy, wind power and bio diese. Food traders will cater to every palate with ethically-sourced produce and there will be activities and entertainment for all ages, with accessibility being a key concern. info@overhtemoonfestival.com
Winston’s Wish, the UK’s leading childhood bereavement charity, with offices in West Sussex, is holding its 4th annual fundraising Sunrise Walk on Sunday 23rd September. 4 They’re back - no you’re not dreaming! Dallas is back! To all those who loved the original series, that ran from 1978 to 1991, you can now indulge again. The new series runs on from the original series, but focuses now on the two grown up sons, John Ross Ewing III (son of JR) and Christopher Ewing (son of Bobby). The new includes several actors/characters from the original series, including Linda Gray as Sue Ellen, and Larry Hagman as the deliciously evil JR. There will be

guest appearance from Ken Kercheval (Cliff Barnes) and Charlene Tilton (Lucy Ewing) and we are told that John Ross has become almost a carbon copy of his father, bent on oil, money and greed. Sound s great, but can they produce the explosive and electric performance from the old days? We shall see! Channel Five start screening the 10-part series this month. Watch TV listings for dates and times.
New from the king of the chillers!
Sussex’s very own James Herbert is not just Britain’s Number One bestselling writer of chiller fiction, but is also one of our greatest popular novelists. His The Secret of Crickley Hall is soon to be aired as a two-part BBC drama. His new book, ASH is published this month. It is a very contemporary novel, incorporating events that only happened last year (Gadafi’s execution, the closure of the News of the World etc). ASH takes place at Comraich,
a Scottish castle that’s been converted into an exclusive, secret hideaway for people who need to disappear, all of whom have escaped justice simply by being rich. But the castle is haunted and David Ash is the investigator who unravels the source of the activity. Look out for a terrifying climax. Published by Macmillan on 7th September 2012. ABSOLUTE LIFE COACHING
TIME OF YOUR LIFE This month, Absolute Life Coaching gives advice on how to manage your valuable time
W
hen people complained that life was too short, the Roman philosopher Seneca replied that it wasn’t the amount of time that was the problem, rather the way people used it. Now 2000 years on, we have tripled our life expectancy but still our complaints are much the same… and so are the answers. Interestingly a whole industry has formed to sell us tools and techniques that promise to help us manage time. Firstly, we are told: ‘Write a to-do list’. But such a list is just an intention. Instead, try planning blocks of time to complete tasks, and turn them into a commitment. Secondly, ‘buy a personal organiser’. The truth is that organised people usually already have an organiser. Getting organised involves breaking old habits and forming new ones. Being organised is a state of mind. Managing time means getting more done with less time… it means getting fewer
things done of greater importance. Thirdly, we are told that time is money. More than this it’s life; you can always get more money but none of us can ever get more time. Then it’s said: ‘phone calls and meetings are time wasters’. For most people, they are usually part of the job. The real time wasters are procrastination, interrupting ourselves, looking for things, being a perfectionist and spending hours on trivia. Lastly, we are told that sticking to completing one task is more efficient. Efficient it may be, but not effective. Being effective means breaking large tasks into small blocks and having a series of short sprints not occasional marathons. Once upon a time, a millionaire with no time to go to a Time Management course offered to pay a colleague if he went for him. His colleague came back and said he would give him one tip from the course and if it worked
he should pay him £20,000. One year later a cheque arrived for £30,000! So what was the tip? Well, what the colleague wrote on a slip of paper and placed above his boss’s desk, telling him to read it regularly was this: “Ask yourself regularly, am I making best use of my time right now?” If you would like to try life coaching call Terrina on 01273 507679 or Georgina on 07912 296483.

Just call me Shining Beacon. I have just been on a course! This morning in the practice, I must admit I was full of it, but sadly everyone seemed too busy to listen to my new ideas. The course that I had just attended was all about MI, and I learned about DARN, OARS, The Beattie Method of Health Promotion, The Cycle of Change and The Rollnicks Ruler, not to mention SMART. I had a lot of exciting and useful stuff to tell everyone, but no one seemed motivated to listen and engage with me. It was then that I had an epiphany moment. The thing to do was to try out this technique of motivational interviewing and see if I could motivate my very busy colleagues into understanding the technique and its uses. Motivational Interviewing is the new name given to a technique which was being used by Socrates in Greece 4500 years ago. Sadly, he was using it as a political motivation tool and that did not go down too well with the powers that be, and so he was eventually tried, convicted and executed for being subversive. It is a way of helping people to get what they

Listening to your patient and learning about them will produce valuable insight that when used correctly will be the beginning of a change. hen provocative divorcee dentist Lorna Stanton explodes onto the Brighton scene, she befriends two new buddies; television producer,
Trudy Button, and New York social queen and spa devotee, Virginia Tardelli, wife to the affluent property tycoon Steve Tardelli. This triumvirate of wild women forge an intense friendship, which is strengthened when Lorna’s sexy exploits with American businessman, Nathan Ross, are outrageously posted on a pornographic website. Subsequently, Trudy uses her BBC training to turn erotic filmmaker as the three friends exact revenge on the scoundrel. However, as fantasy fuses with reality, the women become embroiled in an intense, and at times, hilarious, sexual farce of extra-marital promiscuity, sex addiction and prostitution, and the hedonistic trio realise, too late, that if you play with fire, someone is going to get burnt. Author Louise Clover is an award winning (Royal Television Society/ BAFTA) producer, director and writer of television programmes, straddling everything from sex to sitcom to sci-fi. Her TV experience has also made her no stranger to the egos, promiscuity and scurrility that are found within the industry, which is illustrated, in all its glory, in In Season. She lives in Sussex with her husband, two teenage children, two hundred fish and a rusting jeep called ‘Gorgeous’.

ABSOLUTE BEAUTY
BEAUTY WITH HEART Brighton holds a very special place for ethical beauty retailer, The Body Shop. Founded by the late entrepreneur Anita Roddick, the company started from very humble beginnings in March 1976 as a small shop in Brighton selling around 25 hand-mixed products and pioneering a ‘profit with principles’ business model. It has now grown to be a global favourite with over 2,700 stores in 63 countries worldwide, and more recently has launched the new Pulse boutique and brand expression, Beauty With Heart.
Sepideh Ziaei is the Assistant Manager of The Body Shop in Brighton, one of the first stores to get the new Pulse Boutique makeover. Here she tells Absolute Brighton readers what makes it such a special company Sepideh, can you tell us how you came to be Assistant Manager of The Body Shop in Brighton, and what you love about The Body Shop and its ethos? I started working with The Body Shop nearly three years ago as a Christmas temp. It’s a great company that develops employees and gives you the opportunity to work your way up, and that’s how I became Assistant Manager in the Brighton store. I love the values of The Body Shop and that it’s part of our DNA and everyday working. I’m extremely proud of The Body Shop Community Fair Trade programme, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. The highest quality, natural ingredients that we buy for our products through this unique purchasing programme positively impacts over 300,000 people all around the world. Good news for them, and good news for our customers! The Brighton shop is one of the first stores globally to receive the Pulse makeover. Can you tell us a bit about this new idea, and how it has been received by your customers? The new Pulse boutique is the ultimate beauty browsing experience, where activism, beauty and community collide under one roof to create an interactive, feel-good shopping experience on every level. The new store incorporates cutting 38
edge design with our five core values* in mind to create a warm, welcoming space to shop, as well as excite people about The Body Shop products and values. The customer feedback has been amazing, they really enjoy the new shopping and enhanced beauty browsing experience, as well as the Community Wall which is a designated area to inform customers about our global activities with our Community Fair Trade partners, and encourage both staff and customers to get involved in supporting local charities through volunteering events. Your new brand platform is called Beauty With Heart. Can you tell our readers about this? The Body Shop believes that true beauty comes from the heart. It’s much more than a pretty face, it’s the combined power of looking good, feeling good and doing good. Customers will experience Beauty With Heart by looking good as a result of our products that are powered by nature and rich in the highest quality ingredients; by feeling good as a result of the rich sensorial textures of our products, in combination with the knowledge that the products come from an inherently ethical Brand and our positive Activate Self Esteem stance; and by doing good through engaging with a brand that encourages and takes concrete actions to help others and protect the planet.

Global Brand Advocate Lily Cole in Ghana visiting the Community Fair Trade shea butter supplier
The beautiful actress and model Lily Cole is your new global brand advocate. What do you think she brings to The Body Shop image as a whole? Lily Cole is a long term supporter of environmental and humanitarian causes and embodies the Brand’s strong Values and Beauty With Heart platform. By lending her voice to the discussion around how business can be a force for good, Lily’s work with The Body Shop will amplify the core Values and inspire new generations of consumers for whom beauty is more than skin deep: it’s about looking good, feeling good and doing good too. The late Anita Roddick, founder of The Body Shop said “I believe in businesses where you engage in creative thinking…” Do you think she would approve of the new ideas that have been introduced since her death? I have always admired Anita’s entrepreneurial, pioneering spirit and strength of belief in a set of core values as the foundation for business. Beauty With Heart embodies these values and the company’s commitment in striving to be a force of good. What do you think is her legacy? Her legacy is that business has the power to do good, and that doing good is good for business! I also think that Anita inspired and still continues to
inspire and empower individuals to make a positive difference in this world. One of my favourite quotes of hers is, “If you think you’re too small to make a difference, try going to bed with a mosquito.”

And finally, where do you see the company, and yourself, in five years time? The Body Shop and its unique approach to beauty will continue to create amazing, innovative products using the highest quality ingredients, and engage and inspire customers as a Brand that takes concrete actions to help others through its Community Fair Trade programme, its campaigns, its commitment to animal welfare and its endeavour to protect the planet. I love working for The Body Shop and I am particularly looking forward to continuing and developing my career within the company. *Defend Human Rights, Support Community Fair Trade, Protect Our Planet, Against Animal testing and Activate Self Esteem

Originally suggested by Minesh Agnihotri of Indian Summer in East Street, the concept is so simple and yet so effective. nna Chapman of Brighton’s Trevor Sorbie salon is one of the six finalists for Southern Hairdresser
of the Year Award in HJ’s 2012 British Hairdressing Awards. The British Hairdressing Awards, launched in 1984 by Hairdressers Journal International and sponsored by Schwarzkopf Professional, have celebrated and rewarded the best of British hairdressing creativity for 28 years and are renowned internationally as the ‘Oscars’ of the hairdressing world. To enter the competition, hairdressers working in salons throughout the United Kingdom have to submit four images, which fulfil the criteria. Anna Chapman entered the Southern Hairdresser of the Year category and has secured a place in the final of the Awards. She will now have to submit another four images, which will be judged along with the first four by industry experts, members of the British Hairdressing Awards Hall of Fame, some of the UK’s leading hairdressers and hair journalists from the most influential and fashion aware consumer magazines. Anna will have to wait until Monday 26th November 2012, to find out if she will be awarded the title of Southern Hairdresser of the Year, when she attends a glittering awards ceremony hosted by a leading media personality at the Grosvenor House Hotel, a JW Marriot Hotel in London.
A
young man from Brighton is celebrating his newfound millionaire status after his EuroMillions ticket made him one of 100 UK millionaires created on the opening night of the Olympics. Alex Wheatley (26), who lives with his parents and sister in Portslade, believes that that Friday night was definitely his night, not only did he win the million but he also won his £6 stake back on another ticket. The win was particularly fortuitous as Alex, who plays Lotto regularly online, only dips into EuroMillions when the jackpot has started to roll. The night’s estimated top prize was a whopping £118 million so Alex played, using the £6 he already had in his online National Lottery account. Buying three Lucky Dip tickets, he then forgot about it and went about his busy life. Computer programmer Alex, who
works for a local IT company in Shoreham, is still in shock at the win but remains down to earth, even going to work as usual on the following Monday. “It was amazing to tell people about the win,” said Alex, “and I was astounded at the responses, everyone was so happy for me. One of my closest friends even shed a tear, which then set my sister off and I was not far behind. We definitely needed the tissues to hand!” Friends and family will also be benefitting from the win. “I always said if I won, I’d pay off my parents mortgage. They’ve done so much for me so it will be great to do that for them. My sister, Hannah, has already decided she will be moving in with me to the new house but it will be nice to take her on a shopping spree too.” ABSOLUTE

Add the vanilla extract. Sieve in the flour, baking powder and milk, having removed the star anise. Fold the mix together until combined. Spoon the mixture into the cupcake cases and bake for approximately 25 minutes or until a skewer comes out clean. Leave to cool on a wire rack. To make the frosting, place the icing sugar and butter in a large bowl and use a freestanding mixer, or electric whisk, mix on slow speed until the texture is sandy, then add the milk and vanilla extract and turn the speed up. Mix for about 5 minutes until the frosting is light and fluffy. Use a piping bag to pipe the frosting onto the cakes, then decorate with some star anise or liquorice sweets to finish. Thoroughly Modern Wedding The Dress The Bouquet This year and next year (2013) are the years to get married in the world of wedding dresses; you have more choices than ever with dresses of all lengths and necklines being the rage, and even different colours. The catwalks are seeing a lot of chiffon and silk. And the Kate Middleton effect is still ongoing with lace still the most popular choice. Elie Saab has focused on large skirts to wedding dresses; in fact, they are not only big but are adorned with beautiful embellishments. Meanwhile, Vera Wang has introduced rustic colours to her wedding collection, even black. So it seems, although some trends have stayed, some new additions have burst on to the catwalks, no doubt leading the way for the high street. Below: Neftis bridal dress by Elie Saab’s 2012 collection
A vintage inspired bouquet with pearl additions
So you have your dream dress, perfect venue and cake… don’t forget the flowers. Look at your flowers as an addition to your outfit. They will add a touch of colour and could make the perfect finishing touch. Flower trends, as always, are ever-changing and can be based on the creativity that your chosen florist is capable of bringing to each design. However, this year’s flower trend has so far been a gathered flower style, which could appear easy to arrange, but really requires professional floral design skills. This particular bouquet gives the bride a polished look as opposed to holding just a ‘bunch of flowers’. Crystals and pearls are also proving a popular choice, darted around in a few flower heads of a bouquet. They add a subtle touch of sparkle; perfect if you’re getting married in the sun. Going hand in hand with the lace dress trend, vintage style bouquets are proving a popular choice. These can be especially

Bridesmaids With the trend of ‘grown up’ bridesmaids becoming ever more common, dresses are reflecting that they have moved on. The bridesmaid dresses of the new season play an important role in weddings. They are elegant and even quite sexy these days; an influence we are seeing from the ‘Pippa Middleton bottom’ effect! Gone are the big satin shapeless dresses, and enters in the cut, fitted bridesmaid dress.
Bridesmaids are now elegant and feminine, an influence from the Pippa Middleton effect
Colours
Colours and themes have long played an important role in weddings. However, we are now seeing a new era of shades and ways in which to wear them. Vintage style is having an influence upon colour choices for weddings too. Sage, burnt orange and beige with golds are proving everpopular choices. Meanwhile passionate colours of burgundy and lipstick red have taken over from pale pink and pastels, although fuchsia pink is proving popular when twinned

T
here are plenty of advantages to hiring a wedding suit, as opposed to buying. If you’re on a budget it’s a great way to get a smart suit without spending hundreds, and top-name menswear designers often offer a hire option. Providing the suit remains in good condition, you can just return it to the hire shop. The bought suit, however, is your responsibility to dry clean and store ready for its next use. If you’re wearing morningwear, then hiring really is the sole option, as there a very few occasions where you could rewear in the future. When choosing, you should make sure your choice of suit does not clash with the bride’s choice of wedding dress or the bridesmaids’ dresses. Many companies offer a discreet service where they can make sure that the colours that you pick complement the colours
54
that the women will wear. A good hire company will take a lot of time listening to you, to make sure that the suits that they suggest are ideal for you. They will take into account your body shape and pick a suit that will best flatter your figure, and consider the style and level of formality you wish to achieve. For example, they can help you decide whether to wear a top hat or not. Thanks to the internet, you can now compare a wide range of products from a number of different providers in one place. This will save you time, money and will ensure that you find exactly what you are looking for. Try typing in phrases such as ‘wedding suit hire’, ‘wedding suits’ and ‘suit hire’ and see what you can find. There are now companies that provide a home service too. Measuring, choosing, etc can all be done in the comfort of your own home.

Get me to the church...
Travelling to your wedding should be a memorable par t of your big day. Here’s our top tips on getting there
W
hen it comes to wedding transportation the sky’s the limit, literally. You can make an elegant fairytale entrance, or you could parachute in. The choice is yours! There are many ways of getting to your wedding and what you select depends on what you want, the style of your wedding and whether you will arrive alone or with your spouse-to-be. At one time, the groom saw his bride for the first time on the wedding day when she walked up the aisle, but today, with many couples already living together, that is not so strictly adhered to, and many couples arrive together. Horse drawn carriage A classic horse-drawn carriage is still one of the most popular and romantic ways to get to the church. Many companies offer themestyle wedding carriages - you can even arrive like Cinderella in a completely round pumpkin shaped carriage! Classic car Vintage cars are a popular choice for getting to a wedding. Those concerned about the weather can arrive in style while being well protected from rain and wind, but if good weather is assured, why not arrive in a big old American open-top Cadillac? If you were to have a gangster themed wedding, it would be perfect to turn up in an old 1930s Ford Sedan, complete with running boards!
56
Helicopter OK, this is a bit out there, but if you really wish to make an impact as you arrive for your wedding, a helicopter would certainly have your guests impressed, especially if your arrival was kept a secret until the day. White horse Arrive on a beautiful white horse to your wedding. What a wonderful entrance that would be, but only do this if you have at least a little expertise in riding horses. Prior to your wedding, choose the horse you wish to arrive on and get acquainted with him/her first. An elegant and beautiful arrival could turn into a circus act, if not carefully considered and planned. TWO WHEELS Bicycle built for two Wouldn’t a couple look so sweet on a bicycle built for two? Just make sure the wedding dress is appropriate for cycling in. You would not wish to get it caught in the chain, or get oil on it. But you would truly have an arrival which would be so romantic. Check the internet for companies that hire out good quality tandems. Motor bike or scooter This type of entrance will certainly surprise your wedding guests. The revs of the engine will surely tell everyone the bride and groom have arrived. Take into consideration the wedding dress and type of hair style you choose. The helmet could mess your hair up, so don’t choose an elaborate style. A Harley Davidson is the motorbike of choice, but there are many other classic American or vintage British bikes to choose from. Borrow a scooter from a friend! Just make sure it is sparkling and polished and won’t break down! This is a lovely touch if your wedding has a retro feel.

The Meaning Of Love... The White Dress
W
hite has long been accepted as the traditional colour of the wedding dress, but wedding gowns were
not always white. The marriage of Queen Victoria to her cousin Albert of Saxe-Coburg in 1840 has had more influence on weddings than any other. Queen Victoria put the wheels in motion by marrying in white. Though brides continued to wed in gowns of different colours, white was now set as the colour of choice for weddings, and has continued ever since. There is also an old poem about how the colour of your wedding dress will influence your future: “Married in white, you will have chosen all right. Married in grey, you will go far away. Married in black, you will wish yourself back. Married in red, you’ll wish yourself dead. Married in blue, you will always be true. Married in pearl, you’ll live in a whirl. Married in green, ashamed to be seen. Married in yellow, ashamed of the fellow. Married in brown, you’ll live out of town. Married in pink, your spirits will sink.”
The Bridesmaids
T
he bridesmaid tradition is thought to have originated from Roman Law, which required ten witnesses at a wedding in
order to outsmart evil spirits (believed to attend marriage ceremonies) by dressing in identical clothing to the bride and groom, so that the evil spirits would not know who was getting married. Even as late as 19th century England, there was a belief that ill-wishers could administer curses and taint the wedding! In Victorian wedding photographs, for example, the bride and groom are frequently dressed in the same fashion as other members of the bridal party. Nowadays, the bridesmaid’s role has become more about taking care of the bride’s big day for her, taking away any unnecessary stresses. 60

The Ring
T
he wedding bands are the last gift that a couple
gives one another before they marry. This wedding ring is an emblem and throughout time has symbolized
love, devotion and even an agreement between families. The physical structure of the wedding ring has changed, as different civilizations have changed it to look more and more beautiful. Some materials are more dear, like precious metals, and are considered to be of greater value - hence might mean more. The wedding ring was adorned in past times like it is presently, on the left hand, third finger. The reason being because of the strong-held belief that the vein in this finger moves at once from the heart.

Arundel Castle is the venue for one of its most popular Living History demonstrations of what it was like to be involved in plunder and skulduggery on the south coast of England in centuries past. The Pirates Day is being organised by the experienced Living History group, Raven Tor, who will be set up on the American Lawn of Arundel Castle. This family day will be an opportunity to find out about the Smugglers of Sussex, and the Pirates who menaced the waters around the world. Betfair spokesman Tony Calvin commented: “We are pleased to announce our sponsorship which has boosted prize money on the day by £20,000. There have been a lot of welcomed new sponsorships at the top end of the sport in recent weeks, but the grass roots should not be forgotten and our sponsorship at Plumpton on September 23rd is the latest in our three year, £3m, commitment in this area. In addition, we will also be providing all stable staff on the day with free food and drink in their canteen; this has been very well received in the past, and we are delighted to offer it once again.” Doors open at 12 noon, with the first race at 2.30pm. Adult Admission is £14 including a free race programme when purchased through the Plumpton Racecourse website, and entry is free for all accompanied under 18s. Online ticket bookings and further informtion about the day can be found at www.plumptonracecourse.co.uk or by calling the Racecourse Office on 01273 890383.

Tornados to visit the RAFA Shoreham Airshow, with tactical role demonstation
I
t will be a first for this year’s Royal Air Forces Association (RAFA) Shoreham Airshow, being held on September 1st and 2nd 2012, which will be celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the RAF Central Flying School. The Royal Air Force has supported the show well this year by sending in a pair of Tornado GR4 Aircraft to perform their Role Demonstration from XV Squadron. This is not a normal aerobatic display as performed by other RAF Aircraft. Whereas the traditional display shows what RAF personnel can do, the Role Demonstration shows what the RAF is doing in support of UK and NATO troops on the ground in Afghanistan. The demonstration shows the kind of tactics and manoeuvres performed by RAF crews in their vital air support role providing a ‘show of force’ low fly-bys as well as the use of Brimstone and Paveway guided munitions. The Tornado crews of XV Squadron’s sister unit at RAF Lossiemouth, the famous 617 Dambusters Squadron have just been deployed to Afghanistan to take over from RAF Marham based crews to continue the vital role of providing battlefield reconnaissance and close air support. There are comments that the show lacks the full quota of fast jet displays at Shoreham. This will make up for that concern! It is worth remembering that it now costs £400,000 to put this event on over the two days. The cost of aviation fuel and aircraft takes up much of this. The event is also a charity show, supporting RAFA, and to date has given them almost one point seven million pounds funding. The ground attractions this year will be larger than ever catering for the family, linked to new ground airside attractions. There will be lots of extra items for the children, with extended trade stands. A large funfair and craft tent, and more static aircraft displays will also be present. The Airfield attack with Spitfires, Hurricanes and German aircraft will be the central theme, and other displays confirmed to date include The BBMF Lancaster, RAF Hawk, Falcons Parachute Team (Saturday), Red Devils Parachute Team (Sunday), B-17G Sally-B Flying Fortress, Breitling (4 ship) wing walkers, Blades Award Winning Aerobatic Team, PBY-5A Catalina, Swip Team and Jet Provost. hoenix Brighton and Lighthouse present recent works by David Blandy in a special exhibition curated for Brighton Digital Festival. Blandy is a contemporary ar tist based in Brighton and London who uses video, performance, digital technology, animation and comics to investigate the form and content of the popular culture that surrounds us. His recent works, including Anjin 1600 (2012) and Child of the Atom (2010), draw on the visual language of Japanese anime to tell deeply personal cross-cultural stories. Through his use of the very mediums that he is seeking to deconstruct, video and videogames, Blandy creates truly accessible work that can be simultaneously comic and philosophical, ironic and deeply hear tfelt. Odysseys is curated by Lighthouse and presented in par tnership with Phoenix Brighton for Brighton Digital Festival, and is suppor ted by Arts Council England.

PEACE ONE DAY
“In order to have peace every day, we need to show peace is possible on one day.” Scott M. Weber, Director-General of Interpeace
P
eace Day on 21st September has proven to be an annual opportunity for individuals and organisations to carry out life-saving activities. Earlier this year, the Global Truce 2012 NGO Coalition was launched alongside Accord, BRAC, MAG (Mines Advisory Group), Mercy Corps, War Child and Viva Rio. At the NGO Coalition launch event in June, Scott M. Weber, Director-General of Interpeace, highlighted, “this is an exciting line up of leading organisations. It is a clear demonstration of just how important peace is for all of us to do our work and achieve our goals.” Scott explains, “Interpeace has partnered with Peace One Day to grow this coalition and work towards a day of ceasefire and non-violence on 21st September 2012. In order to have peace every day, we need to show peace is possible on one day. That is why we are so proud to be supporting Jeremy and his team.” Jeremy Gilley, founder of Peace One Day, said: “We are delighted that peacebuilding, humanitarian and development NGOs are all united to bring people together on Peace Day 21st September 2012 in support of Peace One Day’s Global Truce 2012 campaign.” A Peace One Day flagship event will be headlined by Elton John and his band to celebrate the Global Truce 2012. There will also be contributions from Peace One Day founder Jeremy Gilley and Peace One Day ambassador, Jude Law.
