They say there’s a book in all of us. And most of us know someone who is writing (or who has Accounts: Chris Pugh

written a book at some stage in their lives), but many never get round to actually finishing them or getting them published. After all, it is a time consuming task! I am one of the lucky Brightonian’s to know acclaimed local author Peter James; seeing someone chase their ambition and succeed is tremendously inspiring (while also lovely to see happen to

a friend.) As writer of the number one selling Roy Grace novels, it is often assumed that Peter’s success was an overnight one. Just like many successful actors, writers often have years of hard work and grafting before they finally crack the market and become a phenomenon. I for one can recall Peter’s early book launches many years ago along North Street in Brighton as small but nonetheless enjoyable gatherings for friends and readers alike; quite a contrast in size and

grandeur are his launches today where they reach the national tabloids and have hundreds of guests! Peter talks to Mo Hunter-Shine exclusively about growing up in our city, about his role as co-patron for Sussex Crimestoppers, and for all you Roy Grace die-hard fans, a sneak preview of

Man Power

With so many different types of trainers on the market that claim to do different things, from improving performance to helping to burn calories, choosing a pair for your sport can be a task in itself. We take a look at some of the best ones for different sports, as rated by the experts Rugby

The Sprint Frame outsole is 50% lighter than all other regular outsoles, and there is a strong and permanent midfoot support for stability. Players also have the assurance that it has built-in injury prevention by using a lightweight hollow core constuction. £139.99 www.rugbystore.co.uk

ALBION UPDATE Paul Rogers, former Albion captain and Head of Commercial Services at the American Express Community Stadium, takes over from Martin Perry this month to give us an update on the latest developments at the stadium

T

he stadium is now open and already thousands of people have visited our fantastic new facilities. The club had a great start with Gary Hart scoring the first ever goal at the Amex Stadium as Albion beat Eastbourne Borough to lift the Sussex Senior Cup. We have also hosted some major events, the first of which was the St George’s Day luncheon for the Help the Heroes charity followed by a big business gathering in support of local charity Chestnut Tree House. We had our first Club function in July, a hugely successful club dinner with past players and managers and a special dinner for all of our Corporate box holders. We also hosted over 1000 of our 1901 Club members at the stadium in just one weekend, giving members the opportunity to test their seats and hospitality lounges for the first time at an open day for the fastest-growing new business club in Sussex. The 1901 Club has received unprecedented support and some of the very best companies in Sussex have signed up to enjoy Brighton & Hove Albion matches coupled with superb hospitality in our state of the art lounges. Our hospitality team and venue catering are second to none in the city and we don’t think there is a better corporate entertainment opportunity in the area.

Paul Rogers at the glorious new Amex Stadium

Businesses in Sussex have rallied behind the stadium and it is undoubtedly going to be the place to be this coming football season. Top businesses including Bupa International, Becks Peugeot and Profile Fashion have taken on major sponsorship packages for the naming rights of the lounges in the stadium; and Amex has signed for the ultimate prize, naming rights to the whole stadium. Many more prestigious companies have taken on corporate boxes or large areas of seating in the 1901 Club areas, including Parker Building Supplies, IT First and Brighton & Hove Jobs.com, who are also shirt sponsors this season. The full range of business sizes and types have signed up to 1901 Club seats to entertain clients, reward staff or enjoy the business networking that the facilities and VIP approach will bring on match days. Contact Paul Rogers at paul.rogers@bhafc.co.uk to find out more about sponsorship opportunities at the stadium.

ABSOLUTE SOCIALITE DIARY

Radio, rum and a Caribbean connection PJ, aka Peter Jarrette, Brighton’s favourite socialite, with the latest in great new venues, events and happenings

Dear diary Music often helps me to settle down to writing. After the singing, dancing and foolery... it’s been such a full-on month of work and events. And even though our slightly naughty city’s weather has had a wobble, the sun really is shining on us! While the rest of the UK’s cities grumble and grouse about their attendant problems, Brighton remains upbeat and hell bent on squeezing every passionate drop of life’s juiciness out of the fruits of the city’s trees of activity. Glorious! You might have heard that Brad Pitt is filming very near to us and you will spot him in the city if you look closely at the sunglasses that choke the streets, the Laines and our bazillion restaurant terraces. News of ‘BP’ will unfold soon. Right now though, something more homespun is catching the eyes and ears at home and away as music manager Andy Hollis’ electro-dance pop band Kovak enchant us after returning from Toronto’s North By North East Music Festival, where they received adulation from the Canadian and US music press. Kovak’s ‘industry-ready-face’ vocalist, Annelies Van Der Velde and band members Karl Bray, Darren Bray and Martin White have been paying their music dues nicely and are the next Brighton export to the world stage that will yield us more juicy fruit on our Brighton trees to be proud of. Look for the band at facebook.com/pages/KOVAK. Very entertaining! Now I’ve been entertained further too, on Audio’s sun terrace at an afternoon BBQ, by the charming drinks reps at Marblehead’s Kraken Rum. You may have seen them dashing about the city introducing us to this tasty dark spiced liquor. I know a lot of you enjoyed many refreshing Kraken kocktails in the VIP enclosure I co-hosted at the Brighton Beer Festival 2011. Grey Cell Event’s MD Debs Lewis, BBF2011 organiser Steph Harding and I worked tirelessly to bring this new fest to our beachfront. Now I’m mounting a campaign to place Kraken, a Trinidadian produced recipe, bottled in New Jersey, firmly on the Caribbean map itself. A tall order considering the long time established brands that rule that region. However, I am not without my influence and connections in the West Indies. Yes, that’s right... I’m an internationally social gangsta! Speaking of social... there is a new awards gala I hear coming to town early next year. I’ve been contacted by organisers who informed me that, along with some stiff competition from Norman Cook, Zoe Ball and Katie Price, I’ve been nominated in the category of Outstanding Brighton Personality for the First Annual Brighton and Hove Lifestyle Awards. I’m thrilled but flummoxed as to how I sit at any comparable level with such national and international figures! One hopes that bank balances are not the criteria by which we’re to be judged. If we’re judged by the amount of hats in our possession, I may stand a chance! I was invited on to Alison Fern’s BBC Radio Surrey/BBC Radio Sussex show last month to talk to (what I’m told were) millions of listeners about my carryings-on, New York City life and my adventures as written in my trilogy of manuscripts for the show’s ‘My Life’ feature. Believe it or not, I forgot to mention the Lifestyle Awards nomination! I could kick myself. Well...I’ve managed that now. Check press and news items to come on the black-tie event’s 2012 date. It’s to be held at one of our five star beachfront hotels. Currently though, I’m wrapped up in events with Debs Lewis at Grey Cell Events for the international society doyenne Liz Brewer (friend to Ivana Trump and Dame Shirley), and the series of launches for her new book Liz Brewer’s Ultimate Guide to Party Planning & Etiquette. This thrill is at sprawling Sedgwick Park House in Horsham. I shall tell all next time. It would be terrible etiquette not to! ABSOLUTE COMMENT

What’s going on....? Mo Hunter-Shine says it like it is

Why in the World?

There has hardly been a more sensational event recently than the demise of the News of the World. The Sunday paper that used to bring you scandal and sensation has been brought to its knees by its own reprehensible behaviour, bringing to an end a British institution of 168 years. Now the blaming and repercussions are happening, and the mopping up goes on. I remember some years ago when the rather watery Sophie Wessex (you know, the one who thought she was the new Diana – oh dear!) was caught out by a News of the World reporter, who dressed in Arab clothing at a function. Sophie, then in PR, told him many things about the royal family, and it made for interesting and amusing reading that Sunday. This incident brought to light security flaws, and also changed the working lives of the lesser royals. These little pranks can show up society’s mistakes and shortfallings, and if the result is a change for the better, than there may be a place for a certain amount of subterfuge. But I doubt there is anyone who would condone the sinister phone hacking that brought down the mighty NOTW, so where do you draw the line? And who draws it? It seems to me that there was a collective idea within the NOTW hothouse that their paper was above the law and above scrutiny - so powerful and established, actually beyond reproach. It’s incredible that those in charge pleaded ignorance. Unfortunately, much of the good work this giant British Sunday paper has done in the past, in terms of good investigative journalism and the backing of great causes, will be overshadowed by the sensational way it crashed and burned. It’s a shame, but perhaps poetic justice has been done. The last issue came out in July, and although it was an interesting read, highlighting its many great stories, it seemed to me to be very smug. There was a lot of backslapping, and the front page read “…we finally say a sad and very proud farewell…” The word ‘sorry’ was nowhere to be seen, and in the circumstances of its demise, brought on from within itself, the humility was missing.

“Unfortunately, much of the good work this giant British Sunday paper has done in the past will be overshadowed by the sensational way it crashed and burned” Just the ticket!

On the news at the time of me writing this column, it was reported that there were only tickets available for three events in next year’s Olympics: underwater fried egg swatting, synchronised cat throwing and raccoon strangling. Well, maybe I got it slightly wrong, but the gist is that the ‘good’ tickets are all gone. These tickets were going to be made available to those who missed out the first (and second) time. The thing is, if I’d wanted to go to the Olympics to see Eugene Bolt run, I might not be too pleased to be left with the choice of the three least favourite sports (which is what you have to assume these last three are). On the other hand, I guess it is quite an achievement to get any tickets at all. If you have tickets, well done. You’ve already won one race! ABSOLUTE

Our undercover celebrity spies unravel the world of showbiz news and gossip

Is Prince Harry Really Dating Absolute Brighton model? Absolutely!

Rumours have exploded in the tabloids this month that Prince Harry is dating model Florence Brundenell-Bruce, formerly a model in an Absolute Brighton fashion shoot. Beautiful 25-year-old Florence, known as Flori to her friends, has apparently captivated the heart of the newly single Prince. Modelling as a bride in our fashion shoot, one wonders if it was a sign of things to come… watch this space.

Is Arnie Back?

Amid rumours that he wants his acting career back, Arnold Schwarzenegger is apparently desperate to finalise his divorce proceedings as quickly as possible. The Terminator star’s wife of 25 years, Maria Shriver, filed for divorce after the actor confessed to her that he had fathered a child with a member of their household staff over a decade ago. Arnold, knowing he instigated the divorce and pain inflicted on his estranged wife and children, has said he wants to give Maria at least half of his fortune in their settlement. And then he wants his acting career back on track. Will it work? Will he be back? You’ll have to wait and see the next episode of Arnie’s life.

She Is!

Amid the news that Hollywood actress Joan Collins has put her luxury New York 3 bedroom apartment up for sale for £1.78 million, we Brits are now hoping that the English star may be returning home to the UK. Spotted recently leaving The Ivy restaurant in the capital with her long-term friend Cilla Black, it looks like the stunning 78-year-old might just be getting back in to the groove of London life once again.

Celebrity style secrets …

how do they do it?

Queen Of Tights? Hot on the lips of every style guru in every town, is Kate Middleton’s constant on-target fashion moves, improving yields for every brand she wears. One thing that has apparently made sales go up in the world of hosiery, is her constant wearing of sheer flesh coloured tights. However, on the contrary to what fans might think, our ‘Royal’ connections have duly informed us that her silk effect legs are actually down to Royal protocol; whether you’re a member of the Royal household or a guest of the Queen at Buckingham Palace, it is a strict rule that all ladies must wear tights or stockings. Very traditional… and Downton Abbey’esque. Gaga Tapes It Up Ok, so we are used to reading about bizarre goings on when it comes to Lady Gaga’s style habits but it seems that her unique goings on continue after dark when the paparazzi aren’t even around. Where as most ladies may use cleanser, baby oil or make-up wipes to remove make-up, it is reported that Lady Gaga’s favourite form of removal is sellotape, yes sellotape! Apparently she sticks it on and then rips it off! Ouch. We think this is one

celebrity tip we may not be trying!

Who’s going UP and who’s going DOWN this month…

UP Young Irishman Rory McIlroy recently became the youngest professional golfer to win the US Open since 1923, with a record score of -16. He has been praised by all those in the sport for his skill, his attitude on and off the course, and has a great future ahead of him. Well done, Rory, you are a credit to golf, and sport in general. DOWN Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli is well-known for his erratic behaviour, but reached a new low recently when he turned up for training wearing a T-shirt glorifying violence. His top showed a pistol, machine gun, knife and a girl’s bleeding mouth, and earned him a warning to start behaving like an adult, and condemnation from anti-knife campaigners. Shame on you. son. She is hurrying through Brighton in her car, late for work, turns into Porstland Road, and her phone rings; she glances down, but sensibly does not answer it. But when she looks back at the road, a young man on a bicycle is coming straight at her. She swerves and crashes into the wall of an empty café. A van behind her clips the cyclist, sending him flying across the road and under the wheels of a heavy lorry, which kills him. Carly is breathalyzed at the scene and found to be over the limit from what she had drunk the night before. The van has vanished from the scene. The lorry driver has driven 18 hours – illegal without a break, all the way down from Aberdeen. The dead boy is identified. He is from New York and has come to Brighton to be at university with a girl he met in NY the previous year. Then the police discover that his mother is the daughter of the New York Mafia Godfather. She flies to England to identify her son, crazed with grief. When she learns that Carly was over the alcohol limit, that the van driver has disappeared and that the lorry driver was out of hours, she vows revenge. Returning to New York she engages a hit man to torture and kill each of those three drivers.

the world of crime and crimefighting? I was burgled, about thirty years ago and the detective who came to our house to take fingerprints looked down at one of my early novels and asked if that was me – was I an author? He gave me his card and told me to call him if I needed research help. My then wife and I became good friends with him and his wife (also a police officer) and we began to meet their friends, who were almost all police officers too. I slowly and steadily networked and gained their trust, and they liked what I wrote about the police and the accurate way I portrayed them. After some years I found police officers were phoning me to tell me about something interesting they were doing, like going on a raid, or to a crime scene and would I like to come

it really did, and very crucially, nor did I know that it was a charity, entirely funded by donations. It is an incredibly important organization, giving the police very considerable help in fighting crime in this county, and never more so than during this time when the police are having to lose around 20% of their entire budget by 2014 and yet crime, nationally, is on a sharp increase. In a nutshell, Crimestoppers enables anyone to report someone they suspect of being involved in criminal activity – whether that is a neighbour they think is dealing drugs, an abusive, violent partner or even a habitual drink-driver – entirely anonymously, with no possibility of there ever being any comeback from the accused. Among the many successful prosecutions resulting from anonymous Crimestoppers calls was the very

After some years I found police officers were phoning me to tell me about something interesting they were doing, like going on a raid, or to a crime scene and would I like to come with them?” Policing methods have improved drastically over the last few decades with the amazing advances in forensic techniques, etc. But when a criminal is caught, justice does not always seem to be done. Do you agree? I do agree, and I think many people feel the same way, ranging often from both the police involved and the victims. In the name of being a so-called ‘enlightened’ society we mistakenly equate that with being soft on criminals. To me the best example in the world of a city changing its policy with dramatic effect was New York. The first time I went there, in 1970, I was mugged within twenty-four hours, in Central Park, just a few hundred yards from the Plaza hotel. Nowhere was safe in that city. When he was elected Mayor, Rudy Guliano doubled the number of police and brought in a harsh zero tolerance policy. Within five years the atmosphere in the

bedroom with a dressing room or walk-in wardrobe is a common commodity in today’s homes. It is a great way to keep your bedroom uncluttered, enabling you to get dressed and ready for the day, in a calm and relaxed atmosphere. All your clothes, shoes and dressing accessories can be on view instantly, in one convenient place. You may already have a dressing room, or have a space, maybe part of a room or a whole room, that could be converted to the perfect dressing area. Either way, you should consider how you would like this space to look and feel. Although a wholly functional area, it should also be suitable to the type of life you lead. If you lead a busy scheduled life, you may prefer a functional modern layout, where everything is on display and easily accessible. Adequate lighting and well positioned mirrors are important to minimise the time you need to spend on getting dressed. If you have more time to spend on preparing for the day, you may like your dressing room to be stylish and relaxing, with more subdued lighting, or more room devoted to a large dressing table. If you carefully decide what you need from your dressing room, it will provide you with a special area in your home.

This look has plenty of volume at the roots and body through the lengths, aided by big, sensuous waves to give it a luxurious summer feel. ABSOLUTE HEALTH

Mind over matter This month our health expert, Sheryl Waters, takes a look at the incredible effects meditation can have on the mind and body

P

eople have been proclaiming the many benefits of yoga and meditation for centuries. Some of the praises for this ancient discipline include greater flexibility and strength, improved energy levels and sleep, and a calmer, more contented mind. Having a regular practice can be a great way to honor your body and mind. Yoga is a powerful way to get into shape physically; while focusing the mind during the physical postures and through meditation is a fantastic way to feel more emotionally harmonious.Yoga and meditation offer a holistic approach to coping with the challenges of daily life. Yoga People are drawn to yoga these days for many reasons. Some people simply hope for increased health and fitness, or may be seeking relief for a specific physical condition. Others are seeking a way to manage stress. Yoga can also complement medical science and therapy for specific conditions such as depression and anxiety. Yoga has also become known as a good way to prepare for child birth. It helps less able-bodied people to get into shape. While hearing how yoga has enhanced so many people’s lives is enough of a reason to make this practice part of your weekly or even daily routine, a recent scientific study has further validated the benefits that have been talked about for years. This study was published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine. Nineteen individuals were assigned to either an hour yoga session of postures and conscious breathing, or a 1 hour reading session. It was important to the creators of the study to compare two activities that have been known to be relaxing and pleasurable in order to ascertain the true power of yoga. The level of GABA (gamma aminobutyric acid) was tested before and after the session. All subjects were then assessed for brain levels of GABA both before and after the session. GABA is a brain chemical that has a generally calming, anti-anxiety effect within the brain.

38

Individuals who completed the yoga session had a 27 percent increase in GABA levels on average. However, those who read saw no change in the levels of this brain chemical. Meanwhile, meditation has been shown to have amazing effects on the body and mind. The key is to focus and still the mind. This could be through yoga, chi gung, sitting meditation, or any other practice that connects the mind to the body and works to let go of all other distractions.

them completely. This creates peace of mind and enables us to achieve what we want to.

Meditation Changes the Brain The brain waves of meditators show they are healthier. Neuroscientists have found that meditators shift their brain activity to different areas of the cortex, for example brain waves in the stress-prone right frontal cortex move to the calmer left frontal cortex. This mental shift decreases the negative effects of stress, depression and anxiety. There is also less activity in the amygdala, where the brain deals with stress.

Happiness and Peace of Mind Meditation offers peace of mind and takes us to the source of happiness. If our minds are all over the place, then we are constantly being attacked by limited patterns of thinking. If we can meditate with a still mind, we will discover a deep, peaceful happiness.

Detachment When our minds are in control, certain things, even little things annoy and irritate us. The only effective solution is to develop detachment and keep things in perspective. A powerful benefit of meditation is that it helps us to gain a broader perspective and detach ourselves from what is insignificant so that we experience equanimity under any circumstance.

Concentration Meditation helps people to build concentration. Whether through work, sport or music, concentration is essential to achieve our best. When we are able to focus on one thing at a time, we become far more powerful, and our energy does not have to cut through many different layers of thinking and distraction. Spontaneity and Creativity When we live in the thinking mind, we are usually preoccupied with the past or future. If we can learn to silence the mind, we can realize that anything is possible, and our creativity and spontaneity in life can come alive.

Health Benefits Numerous studies have shown that meditation has health benefits, generally related to the decrease in stress that occurs through meditation. Lower blood pressure, decreased risk for heart disease, and chronic pain relief are some of the health benefits of meditation. Control Your Own Thoughts Most people are victims of their own thoughts, and have no means to control what goes on in their minds. Regular meditation leads to the ability to control our thoughts, and even the ability to stop

Discovering Your Life Purpose Many people feel that there is something missing. They may have relationships, children, a good job etc, and still something feels missing. Usually we look for meaning in life in the outside world. However, everything we need is right here inside. In meditation we gain a new perspective of life. Meditation can become a lifelong process of answering the eternal question: “Who am I and how can I be of benefit to others by using my unique gifts? Perhaps this is the most essential question we can ask.

ABSOLUTE DENTAL COLUMN

THE WHOLE WORLD SMILES WITH YOU! Dr Farrokh Sharifzad from Marina Dentalcare explains how smiling is one of our most important

H

umans, like many other animals, are gregarious. That is they like, and are never happier, than when they are in their social groups. So strong is this need of others that we use isolation as a form of punishment or manipulation. Regardless of age, no human lives comfortably alone. Achieving companions thus becomes more than desirable, it becomes vital. How do we achieve it? New born babies have a very insistent cry that triggers the caring instinct in the parents. This cry works well as it is very demanding. However, this leaves the newborn with a problem. Constant demanding behaviour will only work for a short time, and babies need long term care. This means that to maintain the caring attitude, they must do something to give back or reward the caring behaviour. It only takes a newborn a few weeks to learn the value of their smile. Smiling shows pleasure at the very least and goes right through the spectrum of emotion to pure joy. Using the facial muscles that create a smile affects both the smiler and the recipient of that smile. Research shows that using muscles that create a smile triggers the release of serotonin in the brain. This hormone is the feel good one. The more serotonin being secreted into the brain the happier you will feel. Being smiled at effects a similar change in the recipient. If the smile is genuine it always creates a feel good factor. A genuine smile is spontaneous and involves all of the facial muscles. It will include the whole face. Instinctively we know that others like to be smiled at and so this is almost invariably an important initiator of relationships – all relationships, family, work, friends, romantic, etc. No matter what the relationship is it will work much better for all if there is an element of ‘like’. We use smiling to initiate ‘like’. Subsequently, we may feel that the recipient of our smile is not likable, but it takes

40

human functions time to learn that. So nine times out of ten we smile on first encounter. Any first encounter can produce anxiety. That first smile on the occasion of which we may be feeling nervous or self conscious is not only very important, as first impressions can take a long time to alter, it is also the one that is most likely to be a conscious smile rather than an unconscious one. That being the case if there is anything about your smile that you are not completely confident about it will show. The signal that it sends or communicates may be negative in very many incorrect ways. It is not that you are terrified of the interview, it is just that the person smiling at you has a confident happy smile while you are suddenly aware that your front teeth are less than perfect.

It only takes a newborn a few weeks to learn the value of their smile Teeth and what they look like are very much part of your face and thus your smile. Your own feelings about your teeth will always be part of your smile. The shape of your face and smile are influenced dramatically by your teeth. Even if your smile does not show your teeth, the soft tissues i.e. lips, cheeks etc are held in place by the hard tissues, i.e. teeth and bone. Often patients with periodontal disease (gum disease) will notice that because their teeth have moved their smile has altered. During your lifetime your smile alters. A big gummy smile from a four-month-old child is enchanting but that same gummy simile on a fouryear-old would not only be unattractive, it would

also be self consciously offered as a four-year-old would realise that others did not have a gummy smile, but a toothy one. Likewise through life, if teeth are badly stained or decayed drifting or loose, the chances are that the owner of those teeth will not smile so readily. This will affect not only their own feelings but also of those around them and how they will feel towards the smiler. It would have an effect on the ultimate social skills that would influence inclusion or exclusion to a group. Your smile, then, is much more than your teeth, but the care of your teeth will affect it dramatically. Every time that you spend time on maintaining your mouth/teeth you are also maintaining your facial bones, your smile and your general health. And your social life. The role of your dental hygienist is vital in helping you with that maintenance. Us professionals are in a unique position to help you develop the skills necessary to complete that maintenance yourself, and to assist you in any area of that care that you may find difficult. So when your hygienist tries to modify your technique, she/he is not telling you off, but trying to be helpful; trying to make sure that your smile and all of the important functions that it performs for you will be with you for life. When I smile at my patients, and they smile back - a whole full face smile - then I know that we are getting a lot of things right here on the Marina. That is a great feeling! As ever I am in the practice on Wednesdays should you wish to clarify any of my comments. Meanwhile keep smiling - it brightens everyone’s day. Oh, and I forgot to mention, you can flirt with your smile as well. Always worth preserving that ability! For further enquiries please contact us at info@marinadentalcare.co.uk

ABSOLUTE LIFE COACHING

FIND YOUR WINGS This month, Absolute Lifecoaching share with our readers the story of a client, who with their help learnt how to turn a negative in to a positive

H

ere at Absolute Coaching, we were recently working with one of our clients, a young 34-year-old chap who had sadly lost his job. He told a story to us which resulted in us working out a landscape of him downsizing, rationalizing with what he wants to do in the future and streamlining his life. He cleared items quickly, and as he said to us, some things from the past are simply best forgotten. By clearing items out, we could see he was doing this in practice. We could also see he was hurting from losing his job. In the true spirit of coaching however, we reminded him that there is no predicament that can’t be turned into an advantage... no burden that cannot give you your wings. Spending just one session with him revealed to us his unhappiness and dissatisfaction with what had actually become a tedious and repetitive job anyway; as he said, some things are best forgotten. And yet, some things that are all too easily forgotten are actually worth

remembering; it can be at those moments in your life when you feel most alone, and most unsure of what will happen next. So many times we have seen our clients unravel their stories to us, only to experience what can only

be described as a moment when things CLICK; we see something change as they tell us their story, a moment when, in all that uncertainty and doubt, a door swings open, a focus returns to life, a phone call reminds them of a friend, an idea clicks into place, a connection is made, energy returns and/or they become unstoppable. So unstoppable was our current client that within hours he had decided on a new career, rewritten his CV, applied for jobs, volunteered to work in a relevant role, made connections, made calls and never once with any doubt… just pure focus, pure energy, and we have no doubt before long, success. So if any of those alone darker times come back again to visit you (we’ve all had them), remember they don’t last, they pass; be comforted that such moments are transient... and pass on. If you want to try Life Coaching contact Terrina and Georgina at Absolute Coaching on 07775 513188.

LEWES ROAD WINS £4M FOR ECO-TRANSPORT CHANGES

O

ver £4m has been won by the city council to improve one of Brighton’s busiest roads and cut air pollution. The cash is coming from the government’s Local Sustainable Transport Fund, aimed at creating growth and cutting carbon emissions. It will be used to help local people make more eco-friendly transport plans for themselves. Physical alterations to the road will include upgrades to

public transport infrastructure, cycling improvements, traffic signal upgrades, pedestrian improvements and improved links to South Downs National Park. An exact timescale for the project has yet to be fixed, but work is expected to start this year. With external partnership and council funds, plus support from the local community, the project will be worth approximately £6 million over four years.

TEACHING RESPECT – WITH PENGUINS AND PLASTICINE

hildren at a primary school in Brighton are using penguins and plasticine in an innovative series of study modules helping them to celebrate their family backgrounds and learn respect for others. During the first four-lesson module, Year One pupils at Elm Grove primary school get to talk to each other about their families or carers and make plasticine models of their families to help the discussion along. They also read from and discuss a book called ‘And Tango Makes Three’ – based on a true story of two male penguins in a New York zoo who successfully raised a chick after being given an egg to look after. Short modules aimed at Y3 and Y6 pupils look in more detail at diversity issues such as name calling and gender stereotyping in

ABSOLUTE LOCAL HISTORY

Brighton’s BUSTLING GEM Tim Parker takes a stroll through the city and witnesses some of the varied ilfe along Brighton’s historic and bustling North Laine area

“T

ake a walk round the North Laine area and the Lanes” said my esteemed editor Verity, and here I am walking with my wife Beth down Bond Street, which connects the North Laine to the Lanes . There was simply no doubt that we were in the right area; a man dressed as a pirate with purple hair passed us. There are some people that make a real effort to dress up when they walk round the North Laine in what must be the most colourful part of Brighton. At the North end of Bond Street there is a mural which changes from time to time and opposite to Richards of Church Street (my hairdressers). On the other side of the road is my accountant Terence Paddenburg of Paddenburg and Co - a good man but sadly he doesn’t have many beans to count on my behalf. We then walked down the street to see one of our favourite shops, Dockerills, which remains true to its traditions in providing a personal service to its customers. For years the store had a locally-known large ginger and white cat which used to sit in Dockerills’ front window gazing impassively at passers by. The cat lived for twenty six years, happy and content

50

but perhaps fortified with some tasty mice from the basement. Then we turned into Gardner Street. No traffic is allowed on Sundays after 11am, and there is something rather nice about sitting in a chair in the middle of a road drinking coffee, or in Beth’s case tea. Have you noticed that nowadays more people are drinking tea. Not long ago, quite a few so-called smart restaurants, would refuse to serve such a beverage but now offer all kinds of diffusions from peach blossom to mint – at a price of course. Then there was a nice surprise; we met the 1911 Ragtime band from Norwich; an engaging trio who dressed the part in turn of the (20th) century black top hats and tails. It seemed a long way to come but they explained that they had several engagements in the area including Pevensey Bay and Petworth House. There was an air of anticipation as they set up their instruments, and then at eleven o’clock precisely they began to play their old numbers. It was a good moment and Beth and I made our first stop of the day at Cordell Goody’s Utopia Café, so we could listen to the band in comfort. Cordell told us an extraordinary story of when a swarm of bees settled round his café

tables in August of last year. Where had they come from? Nobody seemed to know, but the queen bee, followed by her workers, flew up the street and decided that Goody’s café was a good place for a breather. “What happened then?” I asked. Cordell said “A man came along dressed in beekeeping gear and spoke quietly to the queen, and then put her into a box. Within a minute the other bees followed their queen and the incident was over. We left the Utopia Café but not before Cordell had shown us his sunken botanical garden at the back of his cafe. There are all kinds of surprises if you look for them in the North Laine, and the Lanes too for that matter, being that it is the oldest part of Brighton with its famous collection of narrow streets and ‘twittens’ forming the heart of the old town. It’s good to know that after a bit of difficulty a few years back the Komedia Theatre is doing really well and we picked up their latest programme. Alive and swinging with Marilyn Munroe on 12th August sounds interesting. Maybe I will see you there. As we walked into Kensington Gardens, we began to collect some shop names which took

“...where fat seagulls fly over a knitted Royal Pavilion...” our fancy but soon found that in The North Laine there are over 300 different shops in less than half a square mile so when writing about this unique part of Brighton, there is a real problem of where to start and where to finish. So what is the reason for the North Laine’s remarkable success? In this age of supermarkets (many looking much the same), multiple stores and uniform high streets, what a treat it must be for shoppers to meet the proprietors of individual shops and businesses, to talk to the baker, the dressmaker, the farmer, the illustrator and the girl from Sidney, who is selling her own embroidery in the new farmers’ market just a few steps up the hill from the entrance to Kensington Gardens. And it was in the new farmers market that Beth and I had breakfast; bacon, egg, sausages and meat from Jessup’s farm, who have come to the Laine to sell their products direct to the public. So all seems well, I am told by the council that footfall is up and vacancies are well below the national average, so what can go wrong? One worrying trend particularly in the area is the increasing number of national chain coffee shops -Starbucks and the like, and then if landlords become too greedy, some of the wide variety of shops and businesses will begin to disappear. Before we knew it, three hours had gone by and we began to make our way home. I would have liked to mention more businesses but there is neither the room in this marvellous magazine or the time to mention everybody we met. But here are some names that caught our eye - Boy Parker. I went inside. “My names Parker “ I told a friendly and amused staff. And then in no particular order, Tantra - where my daughter buys her colourful skirts, Infinity foods, Red Indian, Cyber Candy (there was a queue at their door), Bell Book and Candle, Snoopers Paradise, Capers Rococo, Licic for Ice cream, Toppers, The Manor, Jump the Gun, Yoma Shoes, Native Americans, Punctured (for tattoos) and finally Temptation Knitting where fat seagulls fly over a Knitted Royal Pavilion!

The beautiful bridal gown Buying your wedding dress should be one of the most enjoyable experiences of your life – Christine Hatchett, owner of White Mischief, gives her top tips to ensure it all goes smoothly F Allow yourself six months to order your gown – this will ensure that fittings are stress free with plenty of time on your side. F Take one or two trusted friends along with you when shopping. Remember, they will all have an opinion and it may not be the same as yours. Preferably take someone with whom you shop regularly who understands your dress sense and include your Mum along if you value her opinion. F Develop a Look Book of styles that you like and you feel will suit your silhouette. Add to it regularly. F Glamour doesn’t have to mean discomfort. You will be in your gown all day – ensure it is comfortable. F Wear your shoes before the wedding; around the house with old socks over the top so you don’t spill your wine on them before! F Think about what your partner will expect you to be wearing and how your hair will be – ask him to browse through magazines with you to gauge his reaction to styles. F Identify your price point and choose your bridal shops carefully, research over the internet and

if you are still unsure call them before your visit. This will ensure that they have dresses within your budget and of your chosen designers. F Don’t try dresses on for fun that are out of your budget, it’s not helpful. It wastes the shops time and could result in you finding your dream dress that you simply can’t afford. F Try to limit yourself to three shops, and from each shortlist no more than three dresses. More will become confusing. For re-visits I suggest that you do this on the same day for all, so you remember how you felt in each gown. F All wedding gowns require alteration which is generally an extra cost, so ensure you factor this into the cost of the dress. Ask for an estimate of alteration costs at the time of purchasing. F Don’t panic if you are told your dress will be ordered in a size larger that you usually wear – wedding gowns tend to come up a size smaller! F Ensure you wear good underwear when trying dresses and perhaps an uplifting strapless bra F Talk to your bridal consultant honestly about your body especially anything that you are

unhappy about. This can help them to select shapes that will be better for you. F Book your alterations early to ensure you can schedule them in as it will be getting busy around the time of your wedding. F Don’t forget your accessories; these can make all the difference. Book an accessories appointment once you have chosen your gown. F Bridesmaids come in all shapes and sizes. Consider different styles in the same colour. Different necklines or lengths can really add variety.

e are seeing many more make-up trends emerging from the bridal catwalks this season. And most designers seem to be taking their inspiration from yesteryear. It’s vintage Hollywood with a modern twist. We are seeing fusions from the 1920’s through to the 1970’s with trends like vintage glamour and boho chic as seen at Jenny Packham, with sultry eyes at David Fielden. Lip colour is going to be big this year too, feminine berry-stained lips and rosy-pink cheeks were seen at Oscar de la Renta. But whatever the trend, the bridal make-up message for 2011/12 is clearly to have a flawless complexion. Natural, immaculate make-up was seen at both Vera Wang and Phillipa Lepley, and Kate Moss was a beaming bohemian bridal example, who recently rocked this sophisticated no-nonsense, organic and not-over-worked look. Get glowing! Wether you will be in the hands of a professional or are doing your own make-up come the big day, the rules are generally the same. Make-up will only look as good as the skin it is on. So give it the best chance you can by having your skin prepared well in advance. Great conditioned skin will provide the perfect canvas for any make-up look. Most brides have at least eight months in which to turn their skin around before their wedding day and this has to be tackled both from inside and out by adopting the holistic approach. Stress is a huge factor when it comes to troubled skin and every cell in our body requires ample water and oxygen to function at its best. The key to achieving a flawless, no make-up - make-up look Come the morning of your wedding day, prepare your skin by gently exfoliating, use the correct moisturiser and apply a suitable primer before your make-up. A regular exfoliation will help to smooth, brighten, and firm your complexion. The correct moisturiser will aid in balancing out the texture and

58

a primer will stabilize the surface resulting in an even coverage and offer longevity to your make-up. Foundation should make your skin appear even and not completely mask it. It may be enough to just cover your T-zone and blend lighter towards the sides of your face and neck. If your bridal gown is cut low then you want to aim for a satin finish with fresh and dewy cheeks. Apply lose powder only where needed, as excess powder settles into fine lines, while powder and tears do not mix! Concealer can be applied after applying your foundation if required, go gently and be sure not to over apply. Blusher can totally transform the face, try very subtle shades to contour and sculpt the face and cheek bones. Add a flush of sheer colour to the apples and a hint of bronzer for warmth, then finish with a dab of cream based highlighter along the bone to create a dewy finish. The key is to experiment with textures and finishes beforehand; choosing the right shades that will be flattering to your skin tone is essential. Eyes can totally pop surprisingly well by just using subtle shades. Creating a natural/nude make-up requires very soft eye shadow colours to gently contour and define the eyes. Use taupe, beige, mink, light earth tones and soft pinks/peaches. . . the secret is to create warmth with light and shade rather than strong colour and to blend very well! Eyebrows are essential as they frame your face, so do not skip this step. Groom your eyebrows and extend, fill in sparse areas with powder instead of pencil for a softer finish. Lashes with brown mascara will give you the ultimate in natural, but I would always opt for your lashes standing out. Remember to curl and use waterproof mascara. Lips with a matte/satin lipstick or a lip stain will look more natural with the benefit of staying on longer and you will not be sticking to your husband!

A Perfect Match The new Amex stadium is home to more than football matches - as they have been granted a multiple wedding licence

T

he American Express (Amex) Community Stadium in Brighton has officially been granted its wedding license recently, and it arrived just in time for the first couple to say ‘I do’ at the spectacular new venue. Polly Harrison who heads up hospitality and events at the Amex said: “We were confident that the license would arrive in time for Kevin and Susan’s wedding and we are delighted to have been granted a multiple license which will enable us to host weddings in all eight luxury lounges in the West Stand. “We will have the flexibility to host several weddings at once, offering various attractive packages as well as a completely bespoke service to all couples.” Polly and her events team worked hard to ensure everything ran smoothly for Shoreham-based couple Kevin and Susan’s big day in July and the wedding banquet was specially created by the stadium’s award-winning chef, Frederick Tobin. Several more weddings have been confirmed for the remainder of this year and the team are expecting even more interest after the facilities are opened to the public at the stadium’s first ever Wedding Fayre on September 4th.

Premier wedding event organisers, Stylish Events, will be hosting one of their superb events with fully-choreographed fashion shows featuring top London show models. “We are incredibly excited about our first event at the Amex Stadium and with over 80 exhibitors already secured we are expecting this to be one of our largest events along the South Coast to date,” said Tracey Rainford, who runs Stylish Events in partnership with Jenny Baldwin. “We have had a huge amount of interest already and Polly and her team have just been fantastic to work with. We are really looking forward to showcasing the stadium as one of the South East’s most exciting new wedding venues and hope this is the first of many of our wedding fayres to come.” For more information, email: weddingsbrighton@azure.uk.com or call 01273 542343 and ask for the weddings team. Wedding ways

We look at a few of the ce

The church wedding

T

hanks to a recent change in the law, you are now not restricted to getting married in a church in your parish. All you have to do is show one connection to your chosen parish. You can marry in a Church of England church if you can show:That one of you: has at any time lived in the parish for a period of at least 6 months or was baptised in the parish concerned or was prepared for confirmation in the parish or has at any time regularly gone to normal church services in the parish church for a period of at least 6 months or That one of your parents, at any time after you were born: has lived in the parish for a period of at least 6 months or has regularly gone to normal church services in the parish church for a period of at least 6 months or That one of your parents or grandparents: was married in the parish. Once you have found your church, either in your own parish or elsewhere, then you can get started on the other arrangements.

Let your Vicar know about your wedding as soon as you can and the three of you can then fix a time to discuss what happens next. Your vicar may invite you to an event to help prepare you for married life together. It’s not obligatory, but it can provide a time to think about the vows and the difference they will make. Banns These are announcements in the church of your intention to marry and a chance for anyone to put forward a reason why the marriage may not lawfully take place. Rehearsal Near your wedding day, perhaps a day or two before, you will usually have the opportunity to rehearse the ceremony with those who are involved. The Wedding Day The vicar will do all he or she can to make the day a personal, meaningful and spiritual experience for you and your guests. First Anniversary and beyond. Your local church will always be there for you throughout your marriage if you need it. Even if your local church is not the place where you married, they would usually be delighted to mark your first anniversary.

The civil marriage

A

civil marriage ceremony can take place in any register office in England or Wales, or at any venue approved by the local authority. These include stately homes and other prestigious buildings, hotels and restaurants, (and just recently the new Amex Stadium in Brighton, has obtained a licence). First of all you need to formally give notice of marriage to the superintendent registrar. Your Town Hall will be able to advise you there. On the day of your marriage, you will need to bring at least two other people who can sign as witnesses. A civil marriage ceremony cannot have any religious content, but you may be able to arrange for individual touches such as non-religious music and readings to be added to the legal wording, etc. The register office where you intend to marry will be able to tell you more about the options available, and the premises where your ceremony is taking place should also be able to help you. What you need to do, and the costs involved There are nationally set fees for giving notice to the superintendent registrar and the registrar’s attendance at the marriage at a register office:

62

Give notice before registering a marriage - £33.50 Register a marriage or civil partnership at a register office - £40.00 Cost of marriage or civil partnership certificate on the day - £3.50 However, the fee for the attendance of the superintendent registrar and registrar at a marriage in an approved premises (for example, at a hotel) is set by the local authority. The superintendent registrar of the district where you wish to marry will be able to provide you with details of fees. Both of you must have lived in a registration district in England or Wales for at least seven days immediately before giving notice at the register office. If you both live in the same district, you should both attend your local register office together to give your notices of marriage. If you live in different registration districts then each of you will need to give notice separately in your respective district. After giving notice you must wait a further sixteen days before the marriage can take place, (for example, if notice is given on 1st July the marriage may take place on or after 17th July). Your marriage cannot go ahead unless the legal formalities have been completed.

he ceremonies that unite a couple in love

A civil partnership

F

rom December 2005, gay and lesbian couples have been able to register at registrars offices across the country their intention to carry out a civil partnership ceremony. A Civil Partnership is legally formed by the signing of the civil partnership schedule. Like a civil marriage, this is also non-religious, but couples who wish to arrange for a ceremony should discuss this with the registration officials. All couples must adhere to the following requirements: Same sex couples must not be married or already be a civil partner. Parental consent is needed if between the ages of 16 and 18. 15 days prior notice of proposed civil partnerships must be given to the Registration Authority. You will be required to sign a document in the presence of a registration officer and two witnesses.

Civil Partnership Act The Civil Partnership Act applies to all residents within the UK and Northern Ireland. Registering under this Act offers gay and lesbian couples similar legal benefits as heterosexual married couples. After you have legally registered your partnership, you will be known as ‘Civil Partners’. There is no stipulation that you automatically take your partner’s surname, so if you would like to change your last name you will need to make changes by deed poll. There is no requirement to hold a ceremony as such, simply making an appointment to go into your local registry office and sign the register fulfils the legal requirements. However, you can do much to make it a day to remember. and www.pinkweddingdays.co.uk can help you with theme settings venue choice, mood lighting, colours, fabrics and all other aspects of celebration. Whatever type of ceremony you choose remember just relax and enjoy it.

A renewal of vows

I

f you and your spouse have made it to a significant anniversary, or you just want to have a ‘do-over’ wedding, consider a vow renewal. There are many reasons couples want to renew their vows: To celebrate a wedding anniversary. They may have had a civil ceremony before, and now want to marry religiously, or the other way round. The first wedding had some element of disaster, and they want to get it right this time! they have more cisposable income now, and you want a more elaborate wedding. Maybe they have had some rocky times in the relationship, and would now like to reaffirm theircommitment to one another. It’s romantic! How to renew your wedding vows There are far less rules and dos and don’ts about vow renewal than almost any other kind of ceremony It can be as simple as the two of you alone in a beautiful spot reciting vows you

have written, or a fancy affair with hundreds of guests. Just as with any wedding planning, you should begin by figuring out what style of ceremony/reception you’d like, deciding a budget, picking a date and finding a venue. Vow renewals are generally cheaper than first weddings, and with less rules on what should be done, you can really concentrate on the elements that are important to you. Since presumably you have already done the legal marriage, this ceremony will not be legally binding. Therefore, you can ask a judge or clergy member to officiate, but you can also ask a friend or an adult child to lead the ceremony. For a simple vow renewal, you don’t necessarily need an officiant at all. Some don’ts Don’t register for gifts. This is not the time to upgrade the china. Wedding gifts are to help a newly-married couple set up their household. Don’t throw bachelor or bachelorette parties. This is an obvious one – you aren’t bachelors or bachelorettes!

dramatic collection of creature and plant artworks made from recycled metal has been adorning Borde Hill Gardens throughout the summer, and is in place until 11th September. The giant contemporary and traditional steel and copper creations feature fauna and flora fashioned from recycled parts and scrap metal, including a dramatic 2m diameter wolf spider lurking at the bottom of Long Dell, a chameleon mounted on a pedestal positioned on the South Lawn and fashioned from recycled chainsaw blades and motorcycle gear chains, as well as a stag beetle, hermit crab and butterflies. Constructed by Brighton based blacksmiths, Anvil Ironworks, the works bring both drama and surprise to the usually restful settings of panoramic parkland, magical woods and the formal Garden of this historic estate. The exhibition coincides with Borde Hill’s exciting Summer Fun season, which runs from Monday 1st to Friday 26th August, and features a host of events to entertain kids during the holiday break. www.bordehill.co.uk

Munching Their Way To The Top! Tongues have been wagging about a new beauty treatment launched in our city a few months ago; using fish to nibble away at toes has become a must-have regular treatment for many. Owners of Asase Garra Rufa Spa in Brighton, Bobby Pendkar and business partner Laco have seen their business take off so successfully that after only a few months due to high demand they have just opened their second spa on Brighton Pier. What aspects of what you do uniquely do you think are key to your business success? Our IT structure is advanced for a relatively small company; groups get their own website allowing them to organise everything from the itinerary to collecting payments. Starting any business needs determination, focus and a dab of luck. Many of the guys working at Eclipse have been there over three years. It’s a great place to work and that certainly adds to the success. From what just used to be a gathering of friends enjoying an evening out before 70

During the summer we also run company family days and team events such as school sports days and marquee dinners; these events tend to be for large corporate groups into the hundreds. You’re a Sussex based company. What do you feel the advantages of being based down here on the south coast are? I think the vibrancy of the city of Brighton appeals to people; there is definitely a cool factor. However, it can cause issues when visiting customers in, say, Warwick. Do you cater for national enquiries as well as local? Very much so. Our largest city for corporate events is London as you might expect, then Manchester. We do Exclusive Christmas parties as far up as Aberdeen. Do you have plans to expand? I think five companies right now is enough but we certainly are looking at ways to make them all as successful as Eclipse Leisure and Office Christmas. And finally, where do you see your business in 5 years time? I’d like to think I would be overseeing the running of four successful businesses. I’ve started a few ventures now, so I have no plans to start any more, except for the office incentives site (well, one more wouldn’t hurt). We have a great team so it would be great for the business, and them to grow together. www.eclipseleisure.co.uk Telephone enquiries: 01273 727333 ABSOLUTE
