The festive season is upon us, which means everyone is knee deep in shopping, cooking and wrapping. But however stressful the hustle and bustle of preparing for that perfect Christmas can Accounts: Chris Pugh
be, we do all love it, don’t we? In fact there is evidence to show that ‘giving gifts’ to one another is a human instinct that was developed even before written word was (that then begs the question, how did we send thank you notes back then?) So my point is, it’s better to embrace the busy shops, the relatives you may dread spending time with, that hangover you may nurse this holiday, and simply have fun (it’s what we humans love doing). In such times of (dare I say it) doom and gloom in our

ABSOLUTE SOCIALITE DIARY
Brighton Christmas Week:
✴
COLD CURES
✴
PJ, aka Peter Jarrette Brighton’s favourite socialite, dodges flu bugs and holds a more sedate birthday party this year! Dear diary
Play... and Stay! presented by the Brighton & Hove Tourism Alliance
Brighton is renowned as a great year-round destination for unique shopping, entertainment and partying, and the Christmas season is no exception. There’s a brilliant buzz in the build up to the Big Day, and this year member businesses of the Brighton & Hove Tourism Alliance are also presenting a host of ‘Twix-mas’ events to ensure the period between Christmas and New Year is just as much fun. Events and activities include wine and rum tastings, a Christmas tree forest, American pool competitions and interactive trails presented by Arty Magazine and the Brighton & Hove Food and Drink Festival. Event information will be posted on the Tourism Alliance website at www.thetourismalliance.co.uk, and be available in a special Christmas Week leaflet from hotels and Churchill Square in December
B1210_021 PJ COLUMN DEC10.indd 1
Man and woman cannot live on bubbly and a bouche alone. No, we need cold and flu remedies too. To be cautious, every silly season I have my Socialite jabs to guard against the lurgy and the lethargic. The latter complaint knows who they are. November has been a bombastic month with so very much to do and see and tons of flu bugs to dodge! Last year at this time I launched my pop career at my big birthday bash, when I danced semi-clad on a table emerging from under a white sheet as one half of ‘Pasha Loves Peter’ with our suspect single ‘Pump Up The P***y’. Well, needless to say we didn’t trouble the charts but my panty-clad gyrations must have upset a few less energetic souls. This year my birthday was a smaller affair thrown incautiously to the wind at Hove Kitchen, Western Road where a grab bag full of faces caught up with each other before we all scattered to the four corners of the December city and the Christmas globe for the holidays. The official 2012 Olympic artist Jan Irvine threw a similarly sized do too for her 60th at the Farm Tavern. There were a whole different set of partygoers there, toasting Jan at this well known Hove pub, that has now been acquired by John Inch of Seven Dials’ Yeoman gastro pub on Guildford Street. Jan’s career has been coming on leaps and bounds as she is now represented by Stephanie St. James and Stephanie’s ‘RSVPR’ PR Company. Jan’s speciality is capturing people’s likenesses in motion. Earlier this year, through an executive contact of mine and my wife Karen’s at London’s Hard Rock Cafe, I hooked Jan up with the mother of all art gigs where she set about capturing Sir Paul McCartney, Paul Weller and a stage load of greats at a charity concert. Jan’s up close and very personal portraits set off an unprecedented bidding war amongst the celebrities, and Jan walked away with a bulging little black book crammed with stellar private numbers and requests for even more private commissions. I’m thrilled to bits to have an Irvine (as Jan drew me a while back as I hosted a catwalk show) hanging proudly in our Beverly Dials home. Katherine Tanswell at the popular Walk-In-Wardrobe put on a night too as she and her gaggle of model lovelies paraded the boutique’s latest Christmas party season ranges. I took my place as the only man bar one amongst notable guests like Whoopsadaisy’s Nina Holland and Gars’ Diane Cheung. But the really tremendous multi-layered event was international make-up artist Zena McCarthy’s Fashion Fusion Breast Cancer Charity night at Madame Geisha (see page 38). Zena crowded over 200 guests into the East Street Venue to be entertained by a stilt waking, fire eating drag queen, a troupe of dancers from the TV show ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ and a fashion catwalk with compere Chico “What Time Is It” Slimani. Thirty glam models slunk and stomped in grand designs by Ailsa’s Ailsa Rollo, the fab styles of Former Glory and formidable footwear by Nooshooz. The styling wand wizards from The Usual Suspects Hair Salons threw their might at and piled the hair of the models high on the girl’s heads. Zena and her team created the models’ impacting eyes, lips and cheekbones. The venue was packed with press and I caught up with scores of citizens that I hadn’t air kissed for months. Now, in the full holiday swing, we are run merrily ragged with Christmas parties and VIP nights. Besides bubbly, we’re sipping mulled wine, brandy and egg nog... and perhaps maybe complimentary Lem Sip? Happy Holidays stunners! XXX

He just likes both. More important is the question who do I prefer... ABSOLUTE INTERVIEW You’ve come a long way since performing with Beyonce in the final of the XFactor 2008 and then going on to win the competition. Tell us, what have you been doing since then? A lot has happened since I won the show. It has been the best experience of my life so far. I have an album that I am very proud of, I call it ‘my baby’. I’ve been in the recording studio making the re package of this album ‘Overcome.’ I’ve also been promoting in Europe and Australia, which has been out of this world. I can’t wait to start promotion in Asia and America. How do you find being away from home and travelling so much? I love to perform. For me that is the time where I lose myself and become something or even someone else. It is the most magical feeling ever!! Being away from home is hard, but I have a great supportive family. who sometimes travel with me and keep me company. Also, my little dog Alfie keeps me company, he is amazing and so loving! I don’t expect it has always run smoothly for you, did you have many ups and downs? You will always have ups and downs in life. But that is a part of life and it’s how you learn and become stronger. I am really happy to say, that I have had more ups then downs. I guess the biggest down is being away from my loved ones. However, I always give thanks to things such as Skype, emails and mobile phones. They help with communication a lot!! How was it for you performing with Beyonce? It was the most surreal moment of my life when I performed with Beyonce. She is such an inspiration to me that I had to keep pinching myself. I have learned so much from her. I pray that one day I will be able to work with her again. That would be a dream come true. Have you always wanted to be a singer? I have always wanted to be a singer, since the age of five years old. I literally live, eat and breathe music . You must have had music icons when you were younger. Who were your musical influences? I have always loved Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Al green, Aaliyah, Tina Turner, Gladys Knight and Aretha Franklin, to name a few. I love Motown music, most of my inspirations have come from that era in music. You have also released singles with Flo-Rida and Pitbull, while earlier this year you sang in the ‘Helping Haiti Everybody Hurts’ single. How was it working with such big names in the industry?
Being a part of the Haiti single was a huge deal. It really was for a good cause and it was amazing to see all these people coming together to help. Working with Flo Rida and Pitbull was also incredible. Flo rida, is a big teddy bear! The sweetest guy you will meet!! Do you still keep in touch with the XFactor finalists? Unfortunately we don’t get to see each other often, but we do keep in touch. It is so hard to see everyone, as everyone is so busy. However, when we do see each other, we make sure we have a blast. X -Factor is as popular as ever, what do you think the public are looking for this year in their X-Factor finalists? They’re looking for someone or a group to just be original and fun! We always like to see talent, but most of all seeing the contestants having fun is so important. Tell us about Simon Cowell. What was it like working with him? Simon is great, a good friend and a great boss. He is a very talented person who has a great ear for music. But most of all, he really understands me, which is more important than anything. How is it working with artists and producers in the USA, is it strange working for a different type of market and demand for music? Not really, not strange.. but defiantly scary! I am always nervous meeting new people and singing for them when I am in the studio. However, once I relax, I just get on with it…. and then the magic can begin. We’ve noticed you have a very up-todate style and are always wearing a great mixture of high street and high end fashion. Is fashion important to you? I LOVE FASHION!! I actually started my own clothing line before the X Factor but never got to finish it. I am hoping that one day soon, I can continue that dream. I love mixing high street with high end fashion. I love Topshop, Dolce and Gabbana , Stella McCartney, H&M... the list could go on
“It was the most surreal moment of my life when I performed with Beyonce”
How is your relationship with your old mentor, Cheryl Cole? We still have a great relationship. She is a good friend to me and someone who really supports me. What would people be surprised to find out about you? Well…It sounds crazy, but I have over 100 teddy bears in my bedroom and they all have names! Ha ha. I love teddy bears! That is the way to my heart. Plus, I am....the craziest person you could ever meet. I am always hyper! ABSOLUTE

ABSOLUTE CHRISTMAS
Jingle All The Way ✴
Santa Claus or Scrooge? We ask a few key people with Brighton connections what Christmas means to them and what they’ll be secretly hoping Santa will bring them this year
✴✴
Glenn Mishon, Managing Director of Mishon Mackay Estate Agents What does Christmas mean to you? For me, Christmas means being with the family and the end of yet another eventful year. And what will you be hoping Santa will bring you down the chimney this year? Without doubt I would like Santa to bring me my first grandchild in February, and good health to my wife, children, mum, dad and family.
Caraline Brown, Managing Director of Midnight Communications What does Christmas mean to you? I’m not a fan of Christmas. It promises too much and delivers nothing but hassle and expense at the end of the day! But I love New Year’s Eve which offers a fresh start every time. And what will you be hoping Santa will bring you down the chimney this year? This Christmas morning I would like to wake up to find Colin Farrell sitting at the end of my bed with my passport and two tickets for a Caribbean cruise in his hand. My bags have been packed and the limo is outside. I am a tone lighter and a million pounds richer. Please don’t wake me!
David Courtney, Managing Director of Walk Of Fame Ltd What does Christmas mean to you? It means spending time with my family. As a proud Grandfather of five (hard to believe but true) it will be an expensive but enjoyable Christmas for us this year. And what will you be hoping Santa will bring you down the chimney this year? Top of my list is continuing good health and happiness. And I hope eight and half years to be celebrating the development of the Brighton Monorail, the launch of the Bristol Walk of Fame and the MYBAND TV music channel.

ABSOLUTE CHRISTMAS
Amanda Powley co-owner of Terre a Terre restaurant in Brighton
Meg Matthews, Interior designer (and former wife to Noel Gallagher of Oasis) What does Christmas mean to you? Christmas is a hectic time for everyone. On the day I’ll be with my family in London, Anais, my daughter will be with her grandparents in the West End to see the production of Warhorse as a treat. Afterwards we’ll have a family Christmas dinner at Claridges. I’ve got a great new range of MM Designs debuting in Top Shop that would be ideal gifts but they’re not out for a few months yet. So shopping will be the usual painful pleasure. I have a personal shopper who has a portion of my list covered but I’m always on the lookout for gift ideas of my own for close friends and family. I like to sneak into Brighton and hit the fashion boutiques and quirky shops in North Laine and scope the jewellery shops in The Lanes. And what will you be hoping Santa will bring you down the chimney this year? Thanks to my new friend, Absolute’s very own Peter Jarrette (page 21) , I’ve scored a gem of a gift idea… he’s got three manuscripts soon to be published and one of them about Brighton, Bags of Fish for Cats, is hysterical and a lot of my jet setty friends love to read when they fly. So prepublished copies will definitely be making their way into their Christmas stockings from me… and that’s what I would like too!
What does Christmas mean to you? Santa’s fun bags and Figgin Puddings. How will you be spending it this year? Cooking from Terre a Terre Cookbook ‘Dunkin’ Doughnuts’ and ‘Steaming Kraut’ and finishing with a big boozy pudding currently available at Terre a Terre. What do you hope Santa will bring you? Peas on earth!
Elyse Young, Managing Director of Zenotti Interior Design What does Christmas mean to you? I love Christmas, from the streets brimming with lights and the shops overflowing with fantastic presents and decorations, parties and sparkly outfits, singing Christmas carols, strangers being polite, smiley, helpful, caring, but most of all being with friends and family and really feeling that Christmas spirit of Love and Giving. Christmas really has the X factor for me. And what will you be hoping Santa will bring you down the chimney this year? I’m hoping Santa has a very large sack and brings my daughter, who lives in Australia, to celebrate xmas and the new year with me.
Michelle Terras, owner of Tramp, vintage clothing store in Brighton What does Christmas mean to you? Christmas means to me a time of celebration and cheer. When family and friends can come together, spend time with each other, exchange gifts of love and attend parties and celebrations. Its a time when you can dust off your favourite party frock that’s been buried in the back of your wardrobe, don your highest heels and bring out all the sparkle and shine that you can find. It’s a time for looking fabulous and having fun and Christmas is the perfect excuse. How will you be spending it this year? I will be spending Christmas this year with my lovely family in the rural Berkshire countryside together with roaring fires, the smells of christmas cooking, long walks and plenty of christmas cheer. What do you hope Santa will bring you? I do hope Santa brings me a gold antique Cartier watch for Christmas but failing that a vintage Chanel clutch bag will do (hint hint!)

ABSOLUTE GARDENING
THE GIFT OF GARDENING The great indoors Other plants that will need watering are indoor winter plants such as poinsettias, cyclamen and azalieas – and the key to being successful with these is to make sure they never dry out and they are put in a light location with no droughts and no excessive heat from radiators. In fact, at this time of year, it’s a good idea to move houseplants off windowsills at night to protect them from the cold. If the temperature really drops then think about moving terracotta containers in the garage or store room to help prevent them from cracking, and if there’s snowfall give your garden plants and shrubs a helping hand by brushing off the settled snow so that branches don’t break under the additional weight.
“...at this time of year, it’s a good idea to move houseplants off windowsills at night to protect them from the cold..”
I
t’s not just Christmas that comes around in December, the Winter Solstice is also a time for celebration on the 21 December when it’s the shortest day and longest night of the year. Also known as Yule, the Winter Solstice is a pagan festival that celebrates the rebirth of the Sun and is seen as the turning point of the year. It was traditionally marked by placing a Yule log in your hearth. Oak, ash or cedar make the best Yule logs which are decorated with natural ivy, pinecones, holly and mistletoe. A Yule log would be set alight to smoulder away for 12 days before it was put out and used as a symbol of re-growth for the sowing of crops the following spring. Another symbol, this time of Christmas, is holly – a popular native plant, but just one option when looking at what trees and hedges to have in the garden. It’s important to consider what effect you are trying to achieve in your landscape or garden when choosing your trees as they provide many solutions in garden design giving structure for other planting such as flowerbeds and shrubberies. There are trees suitable for all aspects and soil types ranging from coastal situations, windswept inland sites, sunny and dry locations and boggy wetlands. Hedges can also provide huge variations and beech, hornbeam, sloe, hawthorn and hazel all lend themselves to fantastic formal shapes in addition to being a natural wildlife garden feature if left to their own devices. They are also an excellent habitat and a valuable food source for birds and many other wildlife. Trees are now widely grown in containers so you can plant them throughout the year providing the ground isn’t too hard and the newly planted trees are regularly watered during dry periods. The Easy Guide to Trees & Hedging – produced by the Horticultural Trades Association together with the RHS – is essential reading for anyone planning planting. You can pick up a copy at your local garden centre.
32
Garden health check Whilst you’re in the garden you should also check to see that young trees are staked in well to protect them from winter winds, and cut back overhanging and lanky branches of established trees and shrubs. Also, if you haven’t already done so, hostas should be cut down to ground level so winter evergreen plants can stand out and get as much light and air as possible and delicate plants should be insulated with horticulture fleece. Finally, nip down to your local garden centre or nursery and invest in some instant winter colour with baskets and pots planted with heathers, ivy and berry producing plants – which you can either enjoy yourself or give as a Christmas gift.

Christmas AT HOME Make sure your Christmas decorations are stylish in abundance this year with a theme of colour and cheer Classical Red, greens and golds all blended together make the perfect setting for a traditional Christmas. By adding to your front door a home crafted wreath visitors will be greeted with a touch of classical Christmas from the moment they step in to your home. Other such touches as a nativity scene sat beside the fireplace and scented cinnamon candles will add to the setting of an age old Christmas… the most Christmassy of all. Reds Christmas is red, so if there is one colour theme that you are going to decorate your home in this year make sure it is this festive splash of rouge. Of all colours too, red is probably the easiest to theme with, since so many shops stock up on red decorations. From your table display to your Christmas tree, baubles and stockings, they all come in red so will brighten up your home easily making it a Christmas grotto fit for Santa. Modern Modern Christmas decorating can be fun but also simple, and are more popular than ever. Since it is also minimalist, there isn’t too much to it; less really is more. But do keep an eye on the colour. Modern Christmas décor is usually one or two colours only, and not traditional colours. Therefore, white or silver, or white and pale blue or even bright pink, are popular choices… especially if decorated on a white or black Christmas tree. A Non-Christmas Theme Maybe you have a keen hobby or are a fan of someone or simply love food, and you’d like that to be your influence in your decorating this Christmas? Fun theme’s make a great surprise for guests upon entering your home, but also a stylish one-off statement.
And finally, remember to keep that chimney clear for Santa…. ABSOLUTE

very elegant home interior created by exclusive global brand Clive Christian is the result of an in depth design, manufacture and installation process. The manufacturing combines the use of state of the art machinery with the skills of numerous artisans, so behind the undeniable wow factor lies a great deal of painstaking attention to detail. The luxury design house makes all of their own furniture at the company workshops in Farnworth, and the quality is second to none in the industry. They are so confident of this that they provide a lifetime guarantee on the furniture. Every single cabinet in a room of furniture is made to order, the doors and drawers are individually sized, and the furniture is assembled by hand. The company has recently released images from its workshops demonstrating various aspects of the manufacturing, offering a rare glimpse into the production side of high end bespoke furniture. World renowned for breath taking opulent interiors and in particular for their stunning bespoke kitchens, Clive Christian makes fitted and freestanding furniture for every room in the home, complemented by beautiful hand carved tables, chairs and sofas.
Right: Clive Christian have a state-of-the-art finishing department. The spraying booth is self-contained and air is passed through filters fitted to the outside of the booth to remove particles from the air. All furniture finishes are matched to in-house samples for consistency (the sprayer is holding a sample in his hand). Following a coat of laquer being applied, the furniture is placed into a curing oven that hardens the laquer finish as it reacts to the infra-red rays that are transmitted inside the oven, providing a beautiful and hard wearing finish. The Empire tables are hand veneered and as the images show, the gadrooned edge is hand carved. The finished edge detail shown here has also been gold leafed. 36

KEEPING GUARD Many people in Sussex take part in contact sports. Dr Farrokh Sharifzad from Marina Dentalcare, explains the importance of wearing a mouth guard, which can protect more than just your teeth
I
f you are taking part in contact sports such as rugby, there are many reasons why you should wear a mouth guard. At Marina Dentalcare, we make all the mouth guards for the Brighton Rugby Club. It helps protect their teeth from chipping and other percussive damage. It can also keep you from biting your tongue. A lesser known but equally important reason is that a rugby mouth guard is helpful for reducing shock associated with head trauma. Because of this, rugby mouth pieces can be very effective at preventing concussions and reducing other percussive damage to the head. And don’t think you can or will avoid head contact while playing a rugby match or during a rugby training session as according to some research one in 10 athletes, including weekend types, will get whacked in the face or mouth at some point. Mouth guards are coverings worn over teeth, and are often used to protect teeth from injury, prevent teeth grinding or protect them during sports. There are three types of mouth guards: 1. Stock mouth protectors are preformed and come ready to wear. They are inexpensive and can be bought at most sporting goods shops and department stores. However, little can be done to adjust their fit, they are bulky, make breathing
and talking difficult, and they provide little or no protection. Dentists do not recommend their use. 2. Boil and bite mouth protectors can also be bought at many sporting goods shops and may offer a better fit than stock mouth protectors. The “boil and bite” mouth guard is made from thermoplastic material. It is placed in hot water to soften it, then placed in the mouth and shaped around the teeth using finger and tongue pressure. 3. Custom-fitted mouth protectors are individually designed and made in a dental practice or a professional laboratory based on your dentist’s instructions. First, your dentist will make an impression of your teeth and a mouth guard is then moulded over the model using a special material. Due to the use of the special material and because of the extra time and work involved, this custom-made mouth guard is more expensive than the other types, but it provides the most comfort and protection. Generally, mouth guards cover your upper teeth only, but in some instances (such as if you wear braces or another fixed dental appliance on your lower jaw) your dentist will make a mouth guard for the lower teeth as well. Your dentist can suggest the best mouth guard for you. An effective mouth guard should be comfortable, resist tears, be durable and easy to clean, and should not restrict your breathing or speech. If you grind your teeth (bruxism) at night, a special
mouth guard type of dental appliance, called a night guard or bite splint, may be made to prevent tooth damage. Who needs a mouth guard? Mouth guards should be used by anyone, both children and adults, who play contact sports such as rugby, boxing, football, ice hockey, hockey and basketball. However, even those participating in non-contact sports (for example, gymnastics) and any recreational activity (for example, mountain biking or horse riding) that might pose a risk of injury to the mouth would benefit from wearing a protective mouth guard. Adults and children who grind their teeth at night should have a night guard made to prevent tooth damage. Why use a mouth guard when playing sports? Because accidents can happen during any physical activity, the advantage of using a mouth guard during sports is that it can help limit the risk of mouth related injuries to your lips, tongue and soft tissues of your mouth. Mouth guards also help you avoid chipped or broken teeth, nerve damage to a tooth, and even tooth loss. At Marina dentalcare we believe a sports mouth guard is the most important part of your kit. No One-Trick Pony★ Mark Woolley advises on reworking the ponytail into a Christmas party hairdo using the brand new Electric Professional Hair Care range
✴✴
✴
This season is all about reworking classic styles into everyday looks that are fundamentally healthy and luxurious from the inside out. However, creating this foundation can seem like an impossible task, which is why I am immensely proud to introduce the brand new ‘Electric Professional Hair Care range,’ designed to deliver glamorous, red carpet ready hair that is accessible to everyone. Currently going through a revival is the failsafe ponytail. Long gone are the days when it was seen as the plain and mundane option. With the likes of Hèrmes, Michael Kors and Louis Vuitton recently demonstrating just how versatile this style can be, the ponytail is no one-trick pony. It’s all about adding your own touch of personality to bring looks up to date. Eva Mendes recently turned heads with her elegant but playful ponytail. I’ll show how armed with the right products, the ponytail can be a striking red carpet look as well as a classic style staple. The key to a great looking ponytail lies in the preparation; making sure that the hair is clean and nourished. Start by cleansing hair with Electric Hydrate Shampoo (£17.50) for the ultimate moisture surge that instantly revitalises dull, dry hair. To ensure the hair strands are shiny, super-smooth and tangle-free, treat the lengths with Electric Hydrate Conditioner (£18.50). The moisture properties in both formulae make them perfect for the colder months while the UV protectors make them ideal for the summer seasons. Next, work in some Electric Smoothing Cream (£17) to tame and soothe unruly hair. On application, the inspired formula evaporates, leaving an invisible, salon-perfect finish to hair that is silky and protected against the drying effects of heat styling. Next, using a Denman Large Paddle Brush (£11), hold the hair taut and blow dry it straight, making sure that you point the nozzle down the hair shaft to smoothen out any kinks. Then, tie hair securely into a ponytail and taking a strand of hair from underneath, wrap neatly around the elastic band and pin for a tidy finish. If it’s minimalist chic you’re after, simply brush through and you’re done! To ruffle things up a bit, backcomb the ponytail and scrunch to add shape and texture, then fix the style into place with some hairspray. For the Christmas party season, transform the ponytail into a sultry evening look by curling large sections of hair from the ends right to the top. Allow hair to cool and gently brush through for soft, bouncy waves. Set the finished style with some Electric Serum (£17) - the notably dry formula eliminates flyaways, leaving hair polished and sleek with a luxurious shine. Finally, for a special festive finishing touch, accessorise with a glittering hair clip á la Eva Mendes.

LETTER OF THE MONTH My long, wavy hair always gets in my way so I just tend to tie it back into a ponytail but I want to look like I’ve made an effort so do you have any tips or advice on updating my look? Ponytails do not have to seem like the lazy option - there are many ways to whip it into shape! Start by playing around with partings and then you can add your own twist by experimenting with volume and texture. Spread Electric Smoothing Cream (£17) evenly between your hands and apply to damp hair. As it dries instantly on hair, leaving no hint of residue, you can blow dry immediately to create volume and shape that is silky and frizz-free. Using a Denman Classic Styling Brush (£8.50) gently backcomb at the crown and tie your hair into a ponytail for the perfect retro homage. Or, why not play up your wavy hair by scrunching the ponytail with your fingers to channel a glossy rock ‘n’ roll vibe. If you’re keen on the dishevelled look, gather the ponytail low near the nape of the neck and tie it very loosely, teasing out any wisps of hair at the front for a slightly undone look. Bear in mind that the ponytail can also work as a base for other updo hairstyles – tie the ponytail into a neat bun or loosely twist and wrap it into a dishevelled chignon.

The Flap of a Butterfly’s Wing★ A
simple thing occurred to us the other day. Try it, and see if you like the idea‌ In some ways it seems obvious, and when we tell you what it is, we can hear you saying “is that it?â€? We are all being bombarded with grim news... more reasons to be anxious, uncertain futures for many people in terms of work, retirement etc. We have written about this several times, and indeed have helped many clients with these issues, but just exactly when did you last give yourself a little treat? In the big universe, small things can make enormous differences. Have you ever heard how the flap of the butterfly’s wings in South America can effect a change in the weather system here in Europe? With this in mind, what small action could you take today, tomorrow, or this week, that would make a small difference? Possibly having a massage, cooking something different, reading a different newspaper, exercising more. Then when you have taken one small
action, possibly it could become more regular and be part of your weekly routine. You are taking small actions to improve your life. Small simple actions can start to shift the prevailing weather conditions in your own life. Go on a different walk – use a different Pub, volunteer for Charity work. The list is endless and needless to say, your very own personal list. Take it one step further and tell a friend who you feel could benefit from this same exercise. They may take your advice and change their life pattern and tell a couple of people they know. Before we know it we can all be doing small things making life better for ourselves and for those around us‌ imagine that. Well there’s our small action for today - sharing it with you! Why not discover your compatability with others and share your humour, enthusiasm and friendship. Remember the ripple effect of the butterfly’s wings‌ Call Georgina or Terrina on 07912 206483. BAH
HUMBUG... ! Dreading Christmas? Here are a few things you may need this festive season, to take out some of the stress, and make it a truly Merry one 1. Selective hearing Maybe for you it’s that time of the year when certain people will be forced upon you that you really don’t want to socialise with. Investing in some earplugs may be the perfect solution! Or, maybe you don’t want your ears ringing from the party the night before? Sexy silver or red tassel earplugs available from www.earplugs.ecrater.com
2. Hang on to your lipstick With all that constant kissing at Christmas, your lipstick can end up on other peoples cheeks all too often instead of on your lips. Paint your lips in some Lipcote after applying your lipstick to keep your pout in tact. Then seek out that mistletoe… Available from Boots, Superdrug or www.lipcote.com £3.35
3. Face up to Christmas Two miracle products, Pomegranate Face and Eye Cream from Weleda, are perfect for disguising lines around the eyes from those late party nights... or if you wait up late for Santa. Day cream £19.95. Eye cream £21.95 Available from independent pharmacies and Waitrose.
4. Get rid of that hangover After all that Christmas partying and mulled wine, try natures hangover remedy; Milk Thistle, by Health Plus, contains the important ingredient, Silymarin, which detoxifies the liver, prevents certain dangerous toxins from entering the vital organ and promotes the regeneration of the liver’s cells. Milk Thistle is often used to treat people with cirrhosis (scarring and permanent, non-reversible damage to the liver). It is also known that Milk Thistle brings great benefits to people suffering from stress. So if your hangover is stressing you out (or the relatives), it’s the perfect tonic! Milk Thistle is available from www.healthplus.co.uk at £11.95 for 60 tablets.
5. Chill out Do some relaxation, buy a tape of relaxing music or simply put your head under the duvet and slow down; whatever gives you relief and inner calm, go get it.Yoga is also great and will prepare you for your new years fitness, helping diminish all that turkey!

Procedure for removing excess body fat Smart LipoTM is an innovative new procedure for removing excess body fat and firming loose skin. Through the use of a single laser fiber that is introduced into the body through a small cannula, the surgeon can literally melt fat away, removing stubborn fat deposits and toning the body. Laser liposuction also tightens the skin, eliminating sagginess and giving it a youthful firmness. Smart LipoTM generally involves a very small recovery time, with most patients being able to return to work and normal activities within a day or two.

ABSOLUTE CHRISTMAS
A Flaming Christmas Pudding Try this beautifully rich Brandy Christmas pudding to complete a magical Christmas dinner Preparation time: 1-2 hours Cooking time: over 2 hours Ingredients 225g/8oz golden caster sugar 225g/8oz vegetarian suet 340g/12oz sultanas 340g/12oz raisins 225g/8oz currants 110g/4oz candied peel, chopped 110g/4oz plain flour 110g/4oz fresh white breadcrumbs 55g/2oz flaked almonds 1 lemon, zest only 5 eggs, beaten 1 level tsp ground cinnamon 1 level tsp mixed spice 5g/1 level tsp freshly grated nutmeg Pinch of salt 150ml/5fl oz brandy (or rum)
PUDDINGS WITH A PAST! There are many traditions and superstitions surrounding the Christmas Pudding. Some people say you should make the pudding with 13 ingredients to represent Christ and his disciples, by the 25th Sunday after Trinity, (which this year would have been November 21st!) Another religious tradition is that every member of the family takes a turn stirring the pudding with a wooden spoon from east to west, in honour of the three kings. It is said that setting the brandy aflame represents Christ’s passion. A sprig of holly as garnish is a reminder of the Crown of Thorns. Holly supposedly brought good luck and had special healing powers. Some families add coins to the pudding for luck. Everyone then stirs the pudding and makes a wish. Those who get the coins in their serving get wealth, health, happiness, and their wish will come true. Some people even add gold rings to the mix to indicate the finder will get married in the coming year. A tradition that died out due to its depressing nature, was the addition of thimbles or buttons to the pudding. This signaled that the finder would remain a spinster or bachelor forever!
Preparation method Lightly grease 4x600ml/1 pint or 2x1.2 litre/2 pint pudding basins. Mix together all the dry ingredients. Stir in the eggs and brandy and mix well. Spoon the mix into basins. Put a circle of baking parchment and foil over the top of each basin and tie securely with string. Make a string handle from one side of the basin to the other so it is easier to pick the basin out of the pan after cooking. Technique for wrapping a pudding for steaming Put the basins in a large steamer of boiling water and cover with a lid. Boil for 5-6 hours, topping the boiling water up from time to time, if necessary. If you do not have a steamer, put the basins in a large pan on inverted saucers on the base. Pour in boiling water to come a third of the way up the sides of the pudding bowls. Cover and steam as before. Cool. Change the baking parchment and foil covers for fresh ones and tie up as before. Store in a cool cupboard until Christmas Day. To serve: Steam for 2 hours and serve with brandy butter, rum sauce, cream or homemade custard.
Chefs Top Tip:
For a truly magical arrival when serving on Christmas day, pour some hot brandy over it and light it. Beautiful blue flames will adorn your Christmas pudding! ABSOLUTE

ABSOLUTE NETWORKING
LIGHTS, CAMERA,
NETWORK! Socialite Emyr Thomas, founder of Bon Vivant the luxury concierge and lifestyle management service, explains why you should go against the networking rules when it comes to
G
oogle the phrase ‘How to Mingle at a Christmas Do’ and several hundred pages will pop up on the best way to network; how to make friends and influence people. The truth is there’s no set way of carrying out this task and if you follow a specific formula your actions may just seem forced and contrived. Here are just some of my favourite rules that are preached but that should be ignored: • Research your hosts or any key players at the event Whatever you do, don’t spend the hours before an event planning conversation based on a rummage through your host’s Facebook photos. Rather than looking astute and interested, by mentioning their Greek island holiday during the summer of 2008 and the birth of their new niece, you’ll just look like a stalker. • Whatever happens, smile Yes, a smile is a pleasant accessory but don’t just wander around aimlessly flashing your gnashers. Rather than believing you to be an agreeable sort, the other guests might just come to the conclusion that a village somewhere is missing its idiot, and will shun you in spite of your friendly motives. • Talk to as many people as possible at the event Don’t spread yourself too thin. It’s better to have five really interesting conversations than to have 30 trivial and superficial conversations during which you make people feel uncomfortable and unimportant by looking over their shoulder and scouting the room.
Christmas parties • Don’t stand with people you already know It’s better to stand with people you know than with no-one at all. If you really are no good at making new friends at these events, don’t ruin your entire evening by forbidding yourself to speak to existing contacts. Standing in the corner on your own makes you look far less appealing than if you’re standing with a couple of colleagues, even if you’re just discussing the next week’s targets. • Make sure you are remembered It should go without saying but, even so; if you can’t be remembered for something positive, it’s probably best not to be remembered at all. Hijacking the office’s
Christmas party with an on-desk strip tease for the benefit of the accounts department followed by a rendition of “I Will Survive” on the Vuvuzela will make you memorable... but not necessarily respected. The only rules that should really apply for successful networking are simply ‘be yourself ’ and, above all, ‘calm down!’ It is true that initially it will require a certain amount of gumption to introduce yourself to another guest, but for most people Christmas is a time of ‘goodwill to all men.’ It’s unlikely that anyone will go out of their way to make you feel uncomfortable and excluded... so just enjoy yourself and spread the Christmas cheer!

ABSOLUTE LOCAL HISTORY
A Royal visit to HMS Wastwater
Local Love Story Tim Parker relates a Sussex wartime romance
I
t was just two years ago when, in this splendid magazine, I told you of the love affair between Signalman Jones, DSM Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve and Gladys, a lovely girl from Moulsecoomb, working at Preston Circus Fire Station. Since then, I am proud to say that I have written and had published a book about this local story of love and war. So this month, I thought I would share a piece of my book with you... It was January 1941 and Geoffrey was serving as an officer cadet at Lancing College, although of course at the time Lancing was no longer a school but a Royal Naval establishment, HMS King Alfred. It was the darkest days of the war, when there was no certainty that Britain would survive. Most evenings. there was a liberty bus that ran from the college to central Brighton. One evening Geoffrey took the bus to the Regent Ballroom and Picture House, near the clock-tower where Boots now stands. While at the bar he was astonished to see his friend Bob, an ex-customs officer, dancing with the best-looking girl in the room. At the next dance Geoffrey took over, and it was not too long before he had fallen in love with Gladys. But he didn’t like to tell her, not right away. Geoffrey was lucky, Bob, who might have been a competitor, was taken ill and hospitalised in Mowden, another part of the King Alfred setup. At the end of March Geoffrey had been promoted to Sub-Lieutenant.
64
There was a party and just time to kiss Gladys goodbye before he left to join his new ship HMS Wastwater, a converted Admiralty whaler in Iceland. There he experienced the grim realities of war in the North Atlantic: atrocious seas, burning tankers, survivors whose legs had to be amputated because of frostbite, and the terrors of the long cold nights. Gladys and Geoffrey kept in contact, although they only saw each other twice in three long years. And to make things more difficult, Wastwater and a squadron of fishing boats was sent to America to help protect its east coast from the long-range U-boats. After America it was to the Caribbean and then back to Canada and the frozen north, where Geoffrey was given his first command, HMS Baffin. After a year in Canada there was good news. Geoffrey was given leave to return home. Here, in his own words, is the story of Geoffrey’s reunion with Gladys: “It was the second week in January when at last we made fast in Wallasey. I jumped ship, caught the ferry across the Mersey and got myself to Lime Street Station in record time. There was a lot of bomb damage and the city was shabby, grey and down at heel. I rang Gladys. She wasn’t there, she was on duty at the Fire Station, but I told her mother I was on the way. Needless to say my train was late: twice it steamed in and out of Crewe station, and while trying to remember the rhyme about the junction I fell asleep. I woke up with that old song running around my head. Oh Mr

ABSOLUTE LOCAL HISTORY Porter, whatever shall I do? I want to go to Birmingham but they’ve sent With brothers Bob and Roland me on to Crewe. But it wasn’t Crewe, it was Euston. I was nearly home. It was strange, sitting in the train waiting for it to make its final move into the station. Canada and America seemed a million miles away. Had I really been gone for two whole years? But now I was back in Blighty, and despite the late hour London was busy. Troops everywhere, American, Australian, Canadian and Indian adding to the mix. Bars, clubs and theatres were open, but despite the surface gaiety there was still a blackout. London was worn and tired: sandbags everywhere, empty buildings and then nothing at all save for a pile of bricks. I waited at a taxi rank. “It’s no good wasting your time waiting,” said an army captain. “ The Yanks have got the lot.” “It was not until 10am the following morning that I finally got to Brighton and approached Gladys’s mum and dad’s house in Moulsecoomb. Albert and Ethel were really nice people, but it was over two years since we had last met and I was apprehensive. Gladys and I were to be married in three days’ time and apart from getting my brother Robert, who was on leave from his ship, to be my best man, I had done absolutely nothing. But I need not have worried; Ethel took charge. “I’ll give you some breakfast and then you can have a rest; Gladys’s shift at the Preston Fire Station doesn’t end till 1600 and Albert won’t be back from the Water Board until later. We keep Service time here you know, and Gladys is a leading Fire officer,’ she said proudly. ‘We had begun to wonder whether you would arrive; we are so pleased to see you.” She could not have been kinder. Gladys rushed into the house a little after 1600; all was well; everything had been arranged. We were to be married in St Peter’s Church on the Level, and afterwards there would be a reception at the Tatler in the Old Steyne. Robert and I had booked into the Clarence Hotel in North Street for the three nights before the wedding, which happened to be on the day of Burns night – 25th January 1944. Gladys took me to St Peter’s to meet the Vicar, Geoffrey Ward. Except that we were met by the curate. “Geoffrey is ill I am afraid, but I can play the organ and marry you at the same time.” “The day of our wedding arrived. Nervously I waited for Gladys with my brother Robert. I couldn’t help looking round and I was surprised at Geoffrey with his beloved Gladys the number of people who had come to the church to wish us well and pray for us. At last the triumphal music; Gladys looked marvellous, but HMS Wastwater underneath my best No.1 jacket I was uncomfortable. For some reason I was suffering from dermatitis, and hard as I had tried I had been unable to get rid of the affliction. The Curate played his part to perfection. Periodically we were left at the altar while he played some of our favourite hymns, including ‘Love Divine, all love excelling,’ before returning to the Altar a little short of breath. His rushing from one post to the other made everyone smile and added to the occasion. Afterwards it was on to the Tatler where the staff did us proud. That evening we left for London. I remember Announcement from Tim Parker overhearing one of our guests: “That was a right good do. Better still, in I am proud and pleased that the story of Geoffrey and Gladys is to London I had Gladys to myself. We were in love.” be published by Seafarer Books. Signalman Jones is a great story, and beautifully illustrated. There is to be a book launch at Lancing College on the 16th December in the early evening. Serena at Skyline
A
ward winning artist Serena Sussex who relocated from London to Brighton nearly 10 years ago has had successful exhibitions in Brighton, London and throughout the UK. 12 months ago Serena took residence at the Skyline Gallery in Brighton Marina setting up her studio and exhibiting her work there alongside some of the best artists, photographers, sculptors from Brighton and around. The success of Skyline Gallery led to a move to much larger premises within Brighton Marina and a merger with The Laughing Dog gift shop selling unique design and gift items for the home. As well as being able to meet Serena and see her working you can view many of her very latest artworks at the gallery in Marina Square opposite the fountain where there is also a new and thriving community of creative independent shops. Well known for her landscape and impressionist paintings, Serena is currently working on views from the South Downs drawing on their beauty to capture the tranquillity and wonder she finds in the natural environment. The Skyline Gallery at Brighton Marina is not the only place you can see Serena’s paintings, she exhibits at ‘art at five’ Gallery and also has an extensive and
popular website where you can view more of this prolific artist’s catalogue and learn about her past successes including, The 2005 Brighton Artist Award, the ‘Woodland Walk’ painting used for an album cover and also her ‘Autumn Walk’ painting being selected for IKEA shop worldwide and even painting with Rolf Harris for the BBC! WORKS OF ART AT THE CLINIC P
atients at The Clinic, Brighton’s longest established cosmetic dental practice, always have plenty to keep their minds occupied whist waiting for their appointment. Since being established in 2002, the exclusive surgery has become well known for its alter-ego – that of a modern art gallery. Indeed, The Clinic has gained an enviable reputation in the art world for showing key pieces of twentieth century British work, as well as more recent pieces by renowned contemporary artists from many different countries. The Clinic art is rehung every six months, but presently the dentist’s chair in Dr Jeff Amos’s surgery faces a large primitive work by the American painter Don Van Vliet – who was more widely known as the avant-garde blues singer Captain Beefheart. Jeff says: “This painting usually provokes comment, partly because it is so striking but also because many people of my generation are fascinated by Van Vliet as a cultural figure. He gave up music to pursue painting, and this picture was actually part of an exhibition that visited the Brighton Art Gallery in 1994
68
so I’m pleased that it has returned to the city. It works perfectly because it helps to divert people’s attention from dentistry – escapism is one of art’s obvious effects.” As Jeff acknowledges: “Obviously, most dental surgeries will have pictures on their walls to soothe the atmosphere. But I think that the unique quality of the art that we surround our patients with at The Clinic complements the high professional standards that we insist upon here. And I know that our clientele appreciate it – after all, there isn’t even a decent commercial art gallery in Brighton where you can see classic British paintings. I am very proud of our collection, and delighted that it gives people a chance to express their views on art in an informal atmosphere.” Nervous art-lovers have nothing to fear if they fancy visiting the Clinic gallery for a viewing – dental appointments are not required! Bentley announces detailed specification of new Mulsanne
W
hile paying homage to past Bentley greats, the brief for the new Mulsanne’s design and engineering teams was to create a Bentley that represents the ‘pinnacle of British luxury motoring.’ The new Mulsanne, designed and engineered at Crewe from the ground-up, reaffirms the marque’s intent to create a new flagship Bentley with refined performance, unparalleled levels of interior luxury and coach building skills to the fore. The return of the Mulsanne name underlines Bentley’s sporting heritage and passion for power and speed. Nothing reflects that prowess better than the legendary Le Mans 24 Hours race. Bentley has enjoyed success on six occasions at Le Mans, where its powerful and reliable race cars have thundered down the long straight into the famous Mulsanne corner, from which the new model takes its name. A pure expression of Bentley design The design of the new Mulsanne is a unique fusion of sportiness, coachbuilt elegance and solidity. Echoing the Bentley S -Type of the 1950s, the Mulsanne features a bold frontal design dominated by the
traditional Bentley matrix grille and highly prominent, classic round inner headlamps with chrome surrounds, flanked by two, smaller outboard lamp clusters, all featuring the latest in lighting technology. The iconic ‘Flying B’ retractable radiator mascot is available as an option. The long bonnet, short front overhang and long rear overhang help to convey a sense of power and movement, reinforced by muscular haunches and sharply sculptured lines which flow gracefully from the front wings to the rear. Uniquely designed 20-inch (and optional 21inch) wheels underpin the Mulsanne’s powerful, sporting stance. Design Director Dirk van Braeckel explains the inspiration behind the Mulsanne’s distinctive appearance: “The opportunity to design a new flagship Bentley is something afforded to very few designers. The team set out to create a sculpted form that blended classic Bentley heritage cues with modern lines.” Sumptuous interior meets advanced technology The latest in-car technologies are discreetly placed within the Mulsanne’s sumptuous interior. A multimedia system with 60GB hard ABSOLUTE

disc drives satellite navigation, audio/video, personal data, telephone and Bluetooth® connectivity. The upper dashboard houses an 8-inch multimedia screen, positioned unobtrusively behind an electrically operated veneered door, while below sits a stylish, leather-lined media player stowage drawer with connectors for iPod, USB, Mini USB and 3.5mm aux. The Bentley interior design team has continued to develop and evolve the luxurious interiors for which their cars are renowned, based on a large-scale, research programme to identify the classic signature features that have defined Bentleys from the 1920s to the present day. Armed with this invaluable resource, the Mulsanne’s design team set itself highly challenging targets for key interior characteristics such as material design, smell, colour harmony and handcrafting. Similar targets were set for the operational refinement and robustness of all control mechanisms. The result is a hand-crafted interior that fully reflects traditional Bentley values, executed to the highest possible standards. The entire cabin is encased within a ‘ring of wood’ waistrail with an unbroken panel of wood gracing the Mulsanne’s dashboard. Inverted dial needles within the instrument cluster are evocative of early Bentleys while the entire dashboard and console design is a subtle reminder of the Bentley wings motif.
“Each steering wheel, for example, can take 15 hours to hand-stitch while stainless steel brightware gleams so perfectly thanks to an intensive 10-hour finishing process” These exquisite materials are fashioned by craftsmen and women with up to 40 years’ experience. Each steering wheel, for example, can take 15 hours to hand-stitch while stainless steel brightware gleams so perfectly thanks to an intensive 10-hour finishing process. A wood veneer takes five weeks to turn from a rough root ball into a full set of mirror-matched, fine-polished leaves. Re-engineered V8 engine and new chassis: power, refinement and efficiency The Bentley powertrain engineers were set three objectives for the Mulsanne: 1) To produce the effortless torque from extremely low revs that customers expect of a grand Bentley 2) To maintain the highest levels of refinement 3) To satisfy strict current and future environmental standards through improved engine efficiency While other powertrain configurations were considered early on in the project, it soon became clear that these targets could best be achieved with a totally revised version of the 63⁄4-litre V8 engine – the very configuration that had been used so successfully in the past. However for the new Mulsanne, all the major building blocks of the engine would be comprehensively re-engineered to integrate the very latest technologies. Dr Ulrich Eichhorn, Bentley Motors’ Director of Engineering, explains the reasons behind the Mulsanne’s V8: “Using our V8 guaranteed the immense power at low revs and unstressed performance that are the hallmarks of a flagship Bentley. But

we also set our engineers the challenge of maintaining high levels of refinement at any speed and, equally important, improving efficiency.” To achieve a significant reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, the Mulsanne V8 sees the introduction of two new control systems: cam phasing and, a first for the ultra-luxury sector, variable displacement. New lightweight componentry including pistons, connecting rods and forged crankshaft reduce reciprocating mass and internal friction for improved engine response. In the new Mulsanne, the 63⁄4-litre V8 develops 512 PS (505 bhp/377 kW) while the massive torque (1020 Nm / 752 lb ft) is now delivered even earlier at 1750 rev/min. This dramatic improvement in torque delivery from just above idle and right across the rev range ensures that with a mere tap of the accelerator the driver is immediately rewarded with that characteristic deep, muffled V8 burble and phenomenal acceleration.
“Prodigious power and torque are complemented by an all-new chassis, unique to the new Mulsanne” These new technologies are complemented by the new eight-speed automatic transmission which, for the first time on a flagship Bentley, comes with steering-wheel mounted paddleshift. Overall, CO2 emissions and fuel consumption are reduced by more than 15 percent, in line with Bentley’s environmental commitment. Prodigious power and torque are complemented by an all-new chassis, unique to the new Mulsanne. Both lighter and stiffer than previous flagship Bentleys, the new chassis benefits both ride and handling. A new Drive Dynamics Control system, operated by a rotary switch mounted next to the gearshift selector, can be used to choose from three standard modes – Bentley, Sport and Comfort – offering precise calibration of suspension and steering control systems.
A fourth mode, ‘Custom’, allows the driver to select bespoke settings via the multimedia system to ‘tune’ the Mulsanne to a preferred driving style. A new air suspension system with Continuous Damping Control (CDC) creates an even more refined and comfortable ride at lower speeds, yet can reduce the Mulsanne’s ride height automatically at high speeds to reduce lift and improve aerodynamic stability. With 20-inch alloy wheels and 265/45 ZR 20 tyres as standard, dynamic handling is assured. Customers may also opt for 21-inch wheels, available in two styles, fitted with 265/40 ZR 21 tyres. While the all-new Bentley Mulsanne pays respect to the past, it is a thoroughly modern luxury car that offers the world’s most exclusive driving experience – a unique fusion of power, refinement and elegance. Bentley Motors Chairman and Chief Executive Dr. Franz-Josef Paefgen says with confidence: “No other car maker can offer such a blend of performance and refinement in a single vehicle! The new Mulsanne is a car that evokes the Bentley philosophy of building the best luxury grand tourers in the world.” Harwoods of Sussex, Pulborough, West Sussex Tel: 01798 877213 web: www.bentleymotors.com/harwoods
“The new Mulsanne is a thoroughly modern flagship that captures the essence of the Bentley marque.
