we thought it only apt that we bring to you an issue of all things ‘romantique.’ And since the wedding season is also in full swing, we bring you weddings galore. The prospect of preparing for a wedding is always exciting. However, the reality is that it can often be a stressful time also. With so much to think about from the dress, to the venue (or country) to the finer details such as marquees and menus, it’s enough to make couples go into full-on wedding

overdrive! So we’ve put together some interesting features (as well as helpful) for those couples who want to take time out from the planning, read our wedding tips and be reminded that it is a happy occasion that they are preparing for. But maybe there aren’t wedding plans on the horizon for you (or maybe you’ve been married for

some years already- see page 58). Well, we also have our regular glitterati of features. Our celebrity interview this month is with Martin Shaw. Hitting the screens in the 60s in hit television series The Professionals, this British actor has hardly left our screens ever since. With many fans (mostly

ladies over a certain age, I am duly informed) Martin also has a reputation amongst journalists for not being the easiest candidate to interview. So it was with trepidation that a brave Danny Masters went to meet Mr Shaw at his hotel in London where he discovered for himself if the rumours are true. (Page 26) While reading Neil Geraghty’s account of Florence, the Absolute office became green with envy. Advising that travellers should treat themselves to more than a few days to explore this magical city in its entirety, Florence uncovered itself to Neil as a place of breathtaking culture and history, fine cuisine (especially the Italian coffee shops) and beautiful warm people. A place great to explore by foot he demonstrates, everything is within easy access of most of the main hotels, and is also nice to visit any time of the year. Lets go! ABSOLUTE FASHIONISTA

BE YOURSELF Do your own thing at your wedding

W

This month, stylist and designer Natalie Wileman has some ideas for those who want to steer away from a conventional wedding

22

eddings tend to be a bit of a competition. It doesn’t matter what you do, who you invite or what you wear someone will always have something to say about the way in which you choose to do so. Take the hilarious 4 weddings programme as example of this. We have become a cynical bunch, marking each other out of ten. What is most important is the marriage itself. My two longest married friends (one couple married 25 years and the other 10 years) both had the type of weddings you could put in a sketch show, with one a drunken evening, and the other a cover up to the actual wedding they had a few years previously, away from the probing eye of family and friends. Their weddings were unconventional but beautiful and the results are two solid relationships that have stood the test of time. So, the fashionista’s advice is do what suits you, and let your wedding day reflect the people you are and the life you want together! Here is my pick of Brighton’s most individual suppliers to help you along the way…… The dress: Renaissance 76 Western Road (located above Fabric Land): 01273 734010 www.renaissancecreativedesign.co.uk Designer Kevin’s history in theatrical design is especially evident in his bridal pieces. Having worked with celebrities and top selling Bridal magazines, he is no stranger to designing dresses to steal the show! The best thing is that his bespoke bridal pieces (seen below) can be created to all budgets as he will design the dress and then discuss the use of fabrics to accommodate your individual needs, giving you a truly couture experience. His illustrations (also

pictured) are awe-inspiring and make a beautiful keepsake. The rings: Baroque bespoke jewellery 9 Union Street: 01273 777003 www.baroquejewellery.com The inviting boutique doubles as a workshop for owners/designers Pippa Knowles, Jason French and Kyle McIntosh. Their striking designs include quirky eagle skull and claw pieces, to classic designs in spectacularly coloured stones, and their dedication to providing ethical and conflict-free diamonds is also a key selling point. Their collections are complemented by pieces from cult designers Shaun Leane, Stephen Webster and Vivienne Westwood. Bespoke pieces can be created. The cake: Buttercream bakery 07890 326601 www.buttercreambakerybrighton.co.uk theartofbeingperfect.blogspot.com I first spotted these creative treats at an exhibition for local artist Pasha Du Valentine. Cupcakes with decapitated Barbie as decoration! Since then, I have become obsessed with following their creative director Astral’s designs, which include anything from Banksy images to Cherubs, as well as her blog “The art of being perfect…” which is the ultimate guide to all things girly. She has a fabulous eye for shoes and an even more fabulous eye for cake design.

As ever, don’t forget to check out my facebook and Twitter pages for up to the minute news of what’s hot in the city!

Happy Valentine’s my ravishing readers; all of you lovely leading ladies and matinee idol men. Whatever your gender and wonderful combinations this is the tender month where our winter hearts thaw and we may all star in our very own rom-coms! Playing me in My Life Story has at times been a difficult and unpopular role, but it has been one that I’ve portrayed with relish... the fact that it was the ONLY role offered to me has become irrelevant. I’m blessed to play alongside my fabulous co-star (who as it turns out happens to be this film’s financial controller… ouch!) Meanwhile on an adjacent soundstage production has begun ‘Coco Sailor Marguerita Courtios’ who arrived to Absolute Brighton’s very own fashionista columnist and budding author Natalie Wileman and her music producer partner. I hear from the set that the always well turned-out new mum went into hospital where she welcomed her new starbaby wearing a designer boob tube and skinny jeans! Coco joins her three siblings, establishing four of Brighton’s most furiously fashionable team of cherubs under one musical and fashion classic roof. Another one of our popular and hardworking stars announced a new arrival for himself too. My media stablemate Brighton’s Marc Abraham, aka the UK’s heartthrob TV Vet, is beaming with pride at the release of his much awaited first book Vet On Call: My First Year As An Out-of-Hours Vet published by Ebury Press. The world and his brother knows that Great Britain is a pet mad nation and Absolute Brighton readers on the UK’s south coast will know Marc-TheVet who has a high social profile locally (when his schedule permits) as he attends his fair share of the city’s public and private events. Now as Absolute is read around the globe being popular online too, (thanks in part to a sturdy Facebook presence), those of you on foreign shores may be interested to know that Brighton resident Marc Abraham is veterinary advisor to the Kennel Club of Great Britain, and has judged a wide range of charity dog shows including London’s much loved Battersea Dogs Home. He is also the resident vet on ITV’s This Morning. He also regularly gives pet advice on BBC Breakfast and other UK TV shows. His series My Pet Shame with Gavin and Stacey actress Joanna Page can be seen on Sky One. Marc co-founded www.thepet.net and in 2007 he was voted ‘the UK’s Favourite Vet’ by the British public, in the form of the Petplan Special Recognition Award. Last year, on the TV channel More 4, Marc presented from the iconic, prestigious, entertainment institution that is the dog showcase ‘Crufts’. Crufts sees squillions of people and hoards of pedigree and mixed pooches descend on the nation’s capital every year. Queen Elizabeth II, our most famous UK dog lover, is an avid fan. I’m sure Big Betty (HRH) will be thumbing through Marc’s oeuvre when it hits all the best book shops in March! While we’re in the mood for love, I’d love to tell you about my most recent offer; episodes of Gossiptv.co.uk, which I hosted from 2005-9 and at its height was curiously popular amongst Chinese internet viewers, have caught the eye of a team of independent UK filmmakers. I have been offered the part of a foulmouthed diva gossip show host in a new pilot for a situation comedy. I won’t be playing against type then. It promises to be fun as they are writing the part especially for me! I know not where it will go once filmed and in the can, but I’m always a soft hearted sucker for those three little words... lights, camera, action! ABSOLUTE CELEBRITY

SPOTLIGHT

Our undercover celebrity spies unravel the world of showbiz news and gossip

Everyone’s Talking About It Celebrity style secrets … The talk on celebrity lips at the moment, is how on earth did Amanda Holden keep her bump a secret? The surprise news that the actress is six months pregnant has certainly got tongues wagging. Being seen recently at many red carpet events and parties looking more svelte than ever in figure hugging outfits, not even the sharpest of paparazzi spies had picked up on her lovely news. The 39-year-old (already mother to one) declared that it was her and husband Chris’s decision to keep it a secret for as long as possible, having suffered the sad loss of a baby last year when Amanda miscarried. The actress who is set to star in Shrek The Musical in the spring, as well as present the new series of Britain’s Got Talent, insists that it will be ‘work as usual.’ She put on her Twitter page the day she announced her news: “I’m still doing BGT and Shrek!” She then stepped out in 6-inch killer heels the following day! Not exactly what is recommended for mums-to-be…

Cristiano’s New Life Becomes Strained Having become a single father last year, footballer Cristiano Ronaldo has now been informed that the 20-year-old birth mother of his child (after a one night stand) has ‘changed her mind,’ and does now want to be in the child’s life after all. According to insiders the young woman has said that she also now wants full custody of the baby boy that Ronaldo has been raising with the help of his sisters and mother. At the time of the birth, the British woman is said to have given up her parental rights immediately in return for an undisclosed amount of money rumoured to be in the region of £10 million! Money really can be the root of all evil.

Bublé Banned From Singing

Singer Michael Bublé (who has controversially chosen the same wedding date as Prince William) has been ordered by his fiancé that under no circumstances is he to sing at their wedding this year… oh dear, not such a good start!

how do they do it?

How does 41-year-old Strictly Come Dancing presenter Tess Daly stay looking so youthful and glowing? “My mum gave me a regime that I use every morning to keep my skin looking fresh and young…” she says. “As soon as I wake up, I boil the kettle, and drink a cup of boiling hot water with nothing in it. It is suppose to clear away all toxins leaving your skin with a glow!” There you go everyone… put that kettle on for a quick fix!

70-year-old beauty icon Raquel Welch says that the key to keeping her figure trim is down to her yoga routine: “every morning at 6am I do stretches and breathing to wake my body. Then, after my breakfast, I do about 45 minutes of cardio and weights in my gym at home.” However, proving she is like the rest of us, she then confesses she does have her vices, “There are those times, however, when I am not filming that I do just pig out on junk food. Sometimes I’ll order a pizza and say I’ll just have one slice… then I’ll finish off the whole damn thing!”

Seeing Gordon Ramsay after his recent cosmetic surgery to implant hair to his crown has left the temperamental chef looking puffy faced and ridiculous. ABSOLUTE INTERVIEW Since he shot to fame in the 70s cult series The Professionals, actor Martin Shaw has barely left screen or stage, making him one of Britain’s finest thespians. An anxious Danny Masters went to meet the actor where he discovered whether the rumours are true of this man, often renowned as being ‘difficult’ in

The Professional

interviews

A

certain trepidation envelops journalists when sent to interview Martin Shaw. Undoubtedly he’s one of Britain’s finest and most popular actors, but he also has a reputation for being difficult, introspective, truculent and combative in interviews. And that’s if you get him on a good day. A serious thespian and a tee-total vegan who admits that his guilty pleasure is one cup of black coffee a day, his meetings with the press aren’t usually light-hearted, garrulous affairs. He’s supposed to loathe talking about The Professionals - the 70s cop show he starred in as tough, frizzy-haired uber-lad Ray Doyle. Oh, and he’s an absolute stickler for punctuality. Which explains why I’m sat alone in the lounge of a London hotel, steadily eating my bodyweight in complimentary peanuts, a full thirty minutes before our encounter is scheduled to begin. Twenty-eight minutes later he breezes in, extending a warm handshake. “Good of you to get here on time” he smiles, his sunny disposition distinctly at odds with his black linen suit, black t-shirt and black crocs (which, incidentally, combined with his thick, lustrous silver hair and Harry Potter glasses makes him the coolest, most handsome 65-year-old I’ve ever met. The swine!) The Professionals - Martin as Doyle, with Gordon Jackson as George Cowley and Lewis Collins as Bodie

As we walk to the hotel lift to take us to the interview suite, he rattles of an amusing yarn about the pain of voiceover work, before recommending a Jimmy Carr DVD that had him rolling on the floor with laughter. Can this be the same Martin Shaw I’d be warned about? Time to find out. And so, in the confines of a tiny lift, I take the pin out of a grenade and casually toss it at him: “I have to tell you, The Professionals was a seminal moment in my youth,” I confidently announce. From behind his glasses he fixes me with a surprised glare… before breaking into a smirk. “It seems to have been for a lot of people,” he chuckles. “But to me it only seems about six months ago that I was doing that show. It’s only when people come up to me and say they watched it as a kid with their dad that I realise how long ago it actually was.” Nicely defused. Stepping out of the lift, I sense we’re on solid ground all round. And so, the interview began.

“…to me it only seems about six months ago that I was doing that show (The Professionals)” Are you officially now a grumpy old man? Oh I am the original grumpy old man! So many things irritate me about modern life. Litter drives me nuts! I just don’t understand the attitude that goes with it. And people who drive in the right hand lane of the motorway when the rest of the road is clear. What’s wrong with driving in the nearside lane? So presumably you’re not a fan of Twitter or Facebook either? What is the point of all that? I text and I do email but only because everybody else does. It’s like nuclear weapons. They’ve got theirs so you have to have yours but when you use them, everything gets f***ed up. When I hear a loud mobile phone conversation I always think I don’t want to hear this, I don’t want to know. If I’m on a train and somebody phones me, they can never hear me because I get so embarrassed I virtually whisper into the damn thing.

ABSOLUTE INTERVIEW You did a spot of boxing in an episode of ‘Gently in the Night’ and looked quite handy. Could you look after yourself in a fight? Not at my age! Although I have done martial arts – a bit of kendo and a bit of kickboxing. But I’m too impatient with myself to carry on because my mind is way ahead of my physical prowess so I get impatient with my body. But it was enough to look like I knew what I was doing. You’re also a big football fan – who’s your team? I grew up in Birmingham so Aston Villa has always been my team. I used to play a bit before I went to drama school you know. I started off at right back and ended up on the right wing. I was very fast back then. Do you watch a lot of football on TV? I do but Christ, I scream and shout when the game’s on. Especially watching England during the World Cup. That was desperate. I honestly think the England players need a psychologist as well as a tactician. They choke and they’re scared. Watching them reminded me of a few first nights I’ve done. As an actor on stage, you think ‘Oh damn! Bugger! I missed that’ and you start this internal dialogue knowing you’re not as good as you could be and it prevents you from doing the next bit. So I do know how you can get in your own way. And I think that was what was happening with our footballers. Is it true you turned down the role of James Bond? Well, they asked me way back to do a screen test for James Bond. I said no because playing that role dominates everything you’ve done previously or go on to do afterwards. I was having dinner with the daughter of (Bond producer) Cubby Broccoli. This was about 1978 and she’d seen me in The Professionals and thought I’d make a great Bond. She begged me to do a screen test and she was absolutely astonished when I said no thanks. Although in retrospect, I can’t help feeling it might have been a good idea to have had a go at it. While we’re talking maverick law-enforcers, what do you make of DCI Gene Hunt? I like him although it did become a bit self-mocking. It’s a bit like Gordon Ramsay swearing all the time. The first time you see him exploding, you think ‘wow this is interesting.’ But then you get a sense someone’s told him to keep swearing because people like it. I got the impression that happened with Gene Hunt. It got a bit too self-knowing for me. And as soon as that happens, the subtlety goes out the window. Your mum was a champion ballroom dancer – was the dancing gene passed down to you? Sadly no. But if you gave me absolute freedom not to have to conform to steps then yes. I move very well and I’m co-ordinated. But if I have to learn any steps then it’s a nightmare because my mind doesn’t work that way. Sadly I haven’t got my mother’s ability to make my feet do exactly what’s required. It was terribly frustrating as a kid. We used to have ballroom dancing lessons at school and I was frustrated and ashamed because I could never do it. I didn’t really get liberated until the twist. I was ace at that because you didn’t have to learn steps for it. So we won’t be seeing you on Strictly Come Dancing? No! Apart from being unable to learn steps I wouldn’t fancy putting myself up for ritual humiliation in front of the nation every week!

Tiles

Stone Stone floors look fantastic, and even improve their appearance with age. Usually having character etched into them, they are a good hardy flooring that can also be easily heated underneath like all standard floorings. Stone is great for hygiene in the home, with pets, children and a busy household too.

Tiling has always been a popular choice for home flooring, mainly due to it being easy to maintain and fit. It lasts a long time, which is why many Victorian houses still have the original tiling (have a look under your carpet, you may be lucky). It is also good for keeping dust at bay, making it allergy friendly. Another advantage with tiling, is that you can keep the theme of your tiles throughout a kitchen or bathroom, repeating them on the walls or skirting.

LAY IT DOWN

Bamboo Carpet From patterned to plain, wool to sisal, carpet is great for not only comfort and warmth, but also for adding a touch of style to your interior. Nowadays there are also many types of carpet to choose from and patterns, so it is also worth asking for sample boards that you can take home and compare to your current interior style.

28

Bamboo flooring makes an unusual feature, and is of course eco-friendly. Durable and naturally tough when grown wild, bamboo floors also undergo further strengthening treatment before being used, so that some products are actually even stronger than oak. It is also an unusual choice of flooring, making it a great feature for a room.

Bare Floorboards What are the floorboards like under your carpet? It’s worth having a look. Sanded and varnished wooden floors make a fabulous base for a room, giving off elegance and style while being extremely practical. Another easy solution to keeping your original floorboards, is to paint them to match the interior colour.

ABSOLUTE GARDENING

FRAGRANT

February

I

f your garden is in a mild location in the UK then snowdrops, crocuses and daffodils will begin to show their heads around now … but beware, February can be one of the coldest months of the year - weather can fluctuate from bright sunny days to ones of extreme cold and frost. For the best of both worlds have a go at introducing a fragrant flowering bulb first, as a house plant and then towards the end of the month, as a bedding or container plant in the garden. Bulbs can provide the most wonderful scent in the home and in the garden, yet many people overlook the benefits plants in general can have on their health and wellbeing. Simple garden plants have been used in medicine, beauty and perfumery for thousands of years, such as hyacinth to lift your mood. In the Victorian language of flowers the Hyacinth flower symbolised sport or play and the blue hyacinth signifies sincerity. Their scent is perfect for lifting your mood during the cold, winter months particularly as they make great houseplants if you can’t wait for them to flower out in the garden. If you do plant them out in the garden (round about October time) then they are better in groups rather than straight rows and letting the plant die back naturally means it will flower year after year. Hyacinths thrive on well drained soil, as does another favourite at this time of year, Heather. Often described as the ultimate evergreen ground cover shrubs, Heathers are very versatile and are just at home and easily grown in containers and baskets. They are also very hardy, but can be fussy about the soil they grow in. Before you can decide which Heather to grow you will need to know the alkalinity of your soil because there are some varieties that require acid soil conditions to thrive. Plants in the Heather family (Erica) flower from November through to March and there is a wide range to choose from in foliage and flower colouring.

A Heather bed should be positioned in full sun, away from deciduous trees and, if possible, sited so that the main view is from the South as foliage heathers always colour better on their Southern side. Heathers can be mixed well with companion plants and bulbs like snowdrops and they can be combined with crocus and miniature daffodils when planted in baskets and containers. Late winter or early spring is when most plants are pruned. Roses shrubs and fruit trees can be pruned once the worst of the winter is gone

– make sure the frost is over with. Roses love a good prune, so don’t be nervous. Rules of engagement when it comes to pruning roses … remove stems that are thinner than a pencil, cut cleanly at an angle and prune just above an outward facing bud if possible. Try to ensure that you have a good pair of secateurs (time to use those National Garden Gift Vouchers on a new pair if yours have seen better days) and if you are pruning bushes make sure they are balanced in shape and even in height.

Brighton & Hove will be in the spotlight this month with the release of the new Brighton Rock film. The critically acclaimed new adaptation of Graham Greene’s classic novel, starring Helen Mirren, Sam Riley, and Andrea Riseborough is released on February 4th. Set in the 1960s, the film focuses on the period when Brighton was in the headlines for clashes between Mods and Rockers. A number of scenes were shot in and around the city, and Brighton & Hove City Council worked closely with the production team to ensure filming ran smoothly. The film is expected to generate a huge amount of interest, and tourism staff hope this will lead to an increase in visitors to the city during 2011.

Britain’s top comedians, Paul Whitehouse, in a new Aviva advert. Amy Seymour, aged 13, was selected from hundreds of other children during days of auditions. She plays the daughter of Paul Whitehouse in an advert for Aviva to promote the importance of life insurance. “I was ecstatic when I found out I had been chosen, as I had worked so hard in all the auditions.” says Amy. The advert, which was directed by Declan Lowney (whose credits include “Father Ted”, “Little Britain” and “Cold Feet”), took two days to film and involved 20 people on the shoot. It is set in a family home with a son, daughter and their parents. Paul Whitehouse plays the father and Amy explains that he was great to act with. “He was really encouraging. We worked as a team on the set and he gave me lots of advice to achieve the best possible results.” This may be the beginning of a career in television and film for Amy as she is also preparing for other auditions. She does however still find time to prepare for all her drama exams as well as concentrate on her academic studies at Roedean.

ertigro was designed by Brightonbased Claude Lester, who became interested in Grow Your Own and urganic food, when she needed to improve her own health. Most people dream of growing their own vegetables and becoming more sustainable; most households do not have the space to do so. Vertigro is a pioneering new gardening solution for small outdoor spaces. Its innovative vertical design, rather than a traditional horizontal garden or raised bed, saves precious space. A clever combination of a self-standing module and grow-bags, Vertigro can be easily assembled and constantly reused. Just plant your plug plants into the sandwiched grow bags and place in the sun and water when necessary, and your plants will successfully grow to produce vegetables for your plate. Vertigro will be exhibited at the Edible Garden Exhibition at Stoneleigh Park on the 18th of March 2011. ABSOLUTE

Next, whilst hair is still wet, prepare it with a suitable styling product so the finished style holds up and keeps shape. Spread some Electric Smoothing Cream (£17) between your hands and focusing on the mid-lengths and ends, work it evenly through wet hair to smooth the cuticle, taming any frizz in the process. As the product evaporates on hair during styling, there is no hint of residue or heaviness, just silky soft, manageable hair that is also protected against thermal heat damage. Now, create a precise parting of your choice and blow dry using a Denman Large Paddle Brush (£11) to aid the smoothing out of any tangles or kinks. Then, keeping the roots smooth, take small sections of hair and tong from the ends to just above the ears, brushing out to amplify the volume for a

apply some L’Oreal Professionnel Full Volume Extra (£8.50) near to the roots and blow dry with a curling brush. Hold hair upright as you do so to maximise root lift. Adding big curls helps to create the illusion of luxuriously thick, voluminous hair with lots of natural body, so use large heated rollers or curling tongs with a wider barrel. Large curls also feel and look more glamorous so this should be perfect for Valentine’s Day. Remember to tame any flyways so hair actually looks like it has been professionally blow dried – rub some Electric Serum (£17) between your hands before lightly running your fingers through the mid-lengths

ABSOLUTE MAKE UP

Celebrity make-up artist Jeni Dodson is our independent beauty advisor bringing to you the latest beauty buzz and hot tips straight from the red carpet!

www.jenidodson.com

Blushing bridal make-up - fit for a princess! With Valentine’s Day being one of the most popular days to pop the question, many ladies will be faced with the issue of how to create their perfect wedding day look. But come April all eyes will be on the delightful Miss Middleton as she prepares to take the vow and marry her very own Prince Charming! With the best at her disposal Kate will not disappoint, and is sure to look absolutely breathtaking on her big day. Of course having a professional make-up artist for your wedding day is a luxury that every bride deserves, but it’s not for everyone, and some brides will choose to marry abroad. I am lucky enough to work with many brides throughout the course of the year preparing them for that special moment. Each bride is unique, but the goal is the same - you want to look and feel the best that you possibly can be, and this is a unique opportunity to bring out your natural beauty and to truly shine. Timeless bridal make-up needs to be subtle and unobtrusive, understated but very pretty; enhancing your best features and everything that’s most beautiful about your face whilst allowing the radiance to shine through. A more polished version of your everyday look. It’s a careful balancing act - looking natural without appearing washed out. If you are calm and confident that come the big day you will have the task in a very ‘steady’ hand, then here are a few tips that may help you on your way. And perhaps by making just a few subtle make-up changes to your usual routine, you can make a huge difference on your wedding day. .

Beauty for the bride Primer: Yves Saint Laurent top secret Flash Radiance Skincare Brush With a single brush stroke, it instantly reduces the look of enlarged pores, refines the skin’s texture and wipes away signs of stress and fatigue. The darling of many a super model and make-up artist. www.debenhams.com £36 Foundation: Bobby Brown Luminous Moisturising Foundation A super-moisturising formula giving the skin a soft, healthy, even-toned glow as it helps reverse the visible signs of ageing. www.bobbibrown.co.uk £29 Eyeshadow: Bobbie Brown Pretty Face Palette Healthy, natural makeup doesn’t mean nude or washed out and with these four beautifully wearable soft pinks and browns for eyes, this versatile palette lets you go anywhere from almost bare to glam and smoky, with a romantic edge. www.bobbibrown.co.uk £42 Eye Liner: Laura Mercier Eye Liner Line and define your eyes Longwearing and smudge-resistant, the liner adds brightness and life to the eyes. www.johnlewis.com £18.50

You may not be able to control the weather, but you can certainly steel the limelight - here’s how! Foundation - Do not use a foundation that has an SPF in it on your wedding day, this does not work well in flash photography. If you require good coverage then a silicon based foundation will last longer than an oil based formula and there will be no need to touch it up. Eyeshadow - There are no set rules for bridal make-up colours, it is simply what works best for you. Avoid hard, harsh colours as these can be unflattering in photos. Choose softer shades of browns, purples, pinks and pastels and even lilac to open up your eyes. Eyeliner - Always frame the outer corners of your eyes with a soft eyeliner by using a gel, pencil or even damp eye shadow powder but stay away from liquid liners. Apply it very close to the upper lash line, this will make your eyelashes look naturally thicker but remember to always smudge and blend to soften. 38

Mascara - For instant eye lift, use eyelash curlers on clean, dry eyelashes. Add a couple of coats of a waterproof black or brown mascara and finish the eyes by adding a few single faux lashes to the outer edges. This will add a touch of romanticism and glamour. Cheeks - You will be bathed in white on your big day so remember to enhance your cheeks a tad more than usual. Opt for a silicon based cheek blush, in a soft pink or peach shade, apply to the apples of the cheeks being mindful that you want to lift the face, so keep the focus high. Lips - keep those lips looking and feeling luscious all day by applying a moisturising lipstick in a shade that is slightly warmer but deeper than your natural lip colour. Choose a formulation that is sheer but has a slight shimmer to it. This will last longer and will be easy to reapply when needed.

Mascara - Smashbox Bionic Mascara Black Bionic is the first ionic mascara for longer, stronger and more voluminous superpower lashes! The specially engineered no-clump brush gently coats lashes with our revolutionary long-wearing, waterresistant formula for a high impact lash in just one sweep. www.salonskincare.co.uk £16 Cheeks: Clinique -Blushwear Cream Stick is a convenient touch-on, stay-on, cream-to-powder cheek colour. Glides over the skin with fingertip control. Blends easily. Blush stays see-through while it builds in colour. Water-resistant. www.clinique.co.uk £19.00 Lips: Cristian Dior Addict High Shine Spectacular Shine Translucent Lipcolor Dior has created the first lipsticks as shiny as those seen on the runway! Your Big Day Smile

ABSOLUTE DENTAL

Dr Farrokh Sharifzad from Marina Dentalcare, discusses various ways to get that ‘perfect’ wedding day smile

N

othing is more stunning than a beautiful bride in a beautiful dress with a beautiful smile! If you are getting married, what better way to prepare for your big day than having great teeth. The importance of a perfect smile on your special day has been researched for many years. Apart from making a good first impression, a perfect smile is also said to be an important social asset; it’s said an unattractive smile can make a person less appealing to the opposite sex and could negatively impact career opportunities (survey done by American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry). So what then is the perfect smile? The teeth are straight and not crooked. They are evenly-spaced with no gaps between the teeth and the teeth are not overcrowded or overlapped. The teeth are also white and not stained and the top teeth show fully when you smile but not a lot of gums above them. What is the solution if you don’t have the perfect smile? There are an increasing number of ways that cosmetic dentistry can help improve your smile: orthodontic treatment, smile makeovers using porcelain/ resin veneers or crowns and tooth whitening. Certainly, if teeth are darkened and stained then whitening is the choice of treatment. For teeth that are broken or in need of re-shaping, veneers and crowns are called for. Individuals that have crooked, crowded or overlapping teeth are perfect candidates for orthodontic treatment which will be our main focus here. Traditional orthodontics requires the placement of metal brackets and wires to straighten the teeth and align them so that the best natural cosmetic and Invisalign

functional appearance is achieved. However, ‘train tracks’ or ‘railway tracks’ as it is affectionately known is not very appealing and deemed unsightly. But, there is an alternative and this is the Invisalign technique. Invisalign is an invisible way to straighten teeth without the need for metal wires and brackets. It uses a series of clear plastic aligners to gradually straighten teeth. The aligners are clear (no one needs to know you are in treatment), comfortable (there are no metal wires or brackets poking the insides of your cheeks or lips) and removable (so normal brushing and flossing can be maintained), and this is what makes it ideal for use in adults and teenagers. Invisalign is unique in that it uses a 3-D computer imaging technology to formulate a treatment plan so that the end result can be visualized before the treatment has even started. Here is how you get started Dentists and orthodontists need special training to provide Invisalign in their practices. Fortunately, I have been trained, and at my dental practice, Marina Dentalcare, I introduced Invisalign to Brighton and Hove. The practice is devoted exclusively to providing high quality cosmetic treatment, in particular Invisalign treatment. To start the treatment, I schedule a consultation to discuss your case. Photographs, X Rays, and moulds of your teeth are required to design a treatment plan. Invisalign will then generate the final result using the 3-D software program. Once you are happy with the end result, the aligners are manufactured. Each aligner needs to be worn for two weeks before changing to the next one in the series. Treatment time can be approximately ten months but more complex cases will take longer. Once treatment is complete, the teeth can also be whitened making your special day something to smile about and the perfect end of your journey to the perfect smile. To book your complementary free consultation with Dr Farrokh Sharifzad, please call 01273 628899 or visit www.mainadentalcare.co.uk for more information.

ABSOLUTE HEALTH

HEART TO HEART In tune with the month of love, our health expert Sheryl Waters discusses the ways to look after your heart

V

alentine’s Day is here again, the month of love and hearts. So while you are thinking of your heart and whose it belongs to, remember that ultimately it belongs to you and you have to take care of it. With heart disease being the number one killer in the western world, it is essential that we all give some tender loving care to this vital organ. The Medical College of Wisconsin in conjunction with Maharishi University in Iowa funded a study about the effects of meditation on health. Researchers discovered that over the course of nine years, the group assigned to meditate saw a 47 percent reduction in strokes, heart attacks and deaths. Meditation One group was told to meditate for 20 minutes twice per day. The other group was given instruction on traditional methods to reduce the risk of heart disease. After nine years, 20 incidences of stroke, heart attack, or death occurred in the meditation group while 31 incidences occurred in the other group. It was found that the meditation group experienced an overall reduction in blood pressure, as well as a significant reduction in psychological stress. Whatever method you choose to quiet your mind and take a break from the crazy mania of life, it is essential that everyone who wishes to achieve vibrant health finds some way to relax. And of course, another great way to relax and shut off the mind is to spend some time in the bedroom with your valentine! But while relaxing our minds is essential in order to enjoy a healthy heart, we must give our body the nutrients it needs. Healthy Intake CoQ10, omega-3 essential fatty acids (EFAs), vitamin C, and B vitamins are a few of the many vitamins and nutrients that work to maintain heart health. Most people suffering from heart disease are chronically deficient in vitamin D. Vitamin D deficiency has been shown to diminish heart muscle cells contractile function, contribute to endothelial dysfunction, distort heart muscle structure, and increase smooth muscle growth leading to atherosclerotic plaque formation. Low levels of vitamin D have been linked with congestive heart failure and individuals with low serum levels of vitamin D have been found to have higher rates of high blood pressure, diabetes, and triglycerides. By correcting their vitamin D levels (through sunlight exposure or by taking vitamin D3 supplements), people can dramatically reduce their tendency to heart disease. Resveratrol, another powerful antioxidant found in the skins of both grapes and blueberries has received a lot of attention recently for its powerful effects in bolstering cardiovascular health. A Harvard Medical

42

School study showed that high doses of2011 resveratrol given to obese mice allowed them to live long, healthy lives despite eating diets high in fat. A Healthy Diet Italian researchers have confirmed that diets rich in leafy green vegetables and olive oil are vital for heart health. Dr. Domenico Palli from the Cancer Research and Prevention Institute in Florence and his colleagues discovered that women who eat at least one serving of leafy greens a day are 46 percent less likely to develop heart disease than women who eat less. And those who consume at least three tablespoons of olive oil a day earn roughly the same benefit. Cayenne (spice) also has a wealth of cardiovascular benefits, including strengthening, stimulating and toning the heart, balancing circulation, and calming palpitations. Spice up your Valentine’s Day with this spice! Hawthorn improves oxygen and blood supply and is rich in flavonoids that protect small capillary vessels from free-radical damage. Hawthorn has been used effectively for angina, arrhythmia, arteriosclerosis, blood clots, and hypertension. Best results are normally seen after a few months, but hawthorn is safe for long-term use. Garlic inhibits bad cholesterol (LDL) production and raises the good kind (HDL). Garlic also lowers blood pressure, prevents blood platelet aggregation, and improves circulation. Just make sure that you brush your teeth afterwards! Cacao which is found in raw chocolate, is a natural source of theobromine, long considered a heart tonic and mild stimulant. Cacao also contains epicatechin, a flavonol that improves the function of the blood vessels. What better way to show your lover how you feel than to give them some healing chocolate. Ginkgo has been shown in numerous studies to cause dilation and increase the blood flow in the arteries, capillaries and veins. In addition, it inhibits platelet aggregation, reduces blood clotting and helps protect our vascular walls from free-radical damage. Ginger reduces cholesterol and blood pressure and also prevents blood clots. Similar to garlic, ginger interferes with the long sequence of events necessary for blood clots to form, helping prevent clots that can lodge in narrowed coronary arteries and set off a heart attack. Essential fatty acids help prevent unnecessary blood clotting, reduce inflammation, and regulate blood pressure. They are found in black currant seed oil, borage oil, evening primrose oil, fish oil, and flaxseed oil. So as this is the month of love, make sure that you give a little extra attention to your heart… it’s the most important heart you have!

ABSOLUTE LIFE COACHING

BE A DISCIPLE OF SELF-HELP

M

ost of us are stressed most of the time, if not part of the time. Remember, stress ages you. So trying to deal with it can change your life; even a slight change. We all agree that changing and getting yourself out of a rut is not easy, it takes courage and energy. Being in a rut is secure and comfortable and safe, but if you keep doing what you’ve always done, nothing will change and you will only get what you’ve always had. Breathing Most people are nervous of change because of failure. To disperse these nervous feelings, lets start by focussing on your breathing. Are you a shallow breather? Most stressed people are. A good exercise to help overcome this, is to try some deep breathing several times a day; it is a simple exercise that can change the way you feel. Breath in deep through your nose, and then slowly out through your mouth. Focus on each breath. Even five breaths as deeply as you can each morning, can dramatically change the way you feel in that moment. Sleep Always remember that sleep recharges us more than anything. Don’t allow yourself to go without sleep, sit on a computer at night or watch TV in to the early hours. It’s an easy habit to create but not at all healthy. It has been proven that sleep deprivation is the major cause of depression and apathy. An Exercise For Change On a sheet of paper, drawer three columns. In the first column, write five things you wish to improve in your life. In the second column, write the first step to changing each of these actions. In the third column,

B0211_043 Life coaching FEB.indd1 1

write what you would love the outcome to be for you. Now place this exercise somewhere where you know you will see it each day; in the car, on a mirror or on the fridge etc. Now every time you look at it, tell yourself that you WILL achieve the third column and make it happen. Congratulations, you have now embarked on changing your life just by trying this simple exercise. Final Tips

• Remember to count your blessings in life, never harbour resentment or jealousy; it is a scientific fact that jealousy and grudges can make people ill. • Be kind to yourself; make time for that massage or soak in that bath longer than usual, and work at changing your life in small degrees. • A great deal of people explore self-help books; this is great to do. But do take time to read them carefully and take away the tips you find useful. In fact, write those ones down and discard the rest; it’s impossible to remember it all. • Try the ‘Zen’ approach (you can research this on the internet), and read The Art Of Happiness by Dalai Lama and Howard Cutter. • If you are lucky enough to have a partner in life, why not treat yourselves to a spa day for two this Valentines Day? Or just a simple walk in the park? Change your pattern. Always remember that healing and change start at home with you. Call Georgina or Terrina on 07912 206483. 1. Prince William and Kate Middleton: Said to be the wedding of the century, Wills and Kate will tie the knot in London on April 29th, 2011 at Westminster Abbey. Prince William proposed to Kate, his girlfriend of eight years, while on a holiday in Kenya where he presented her with the 18-carat sapphire and diamond engagement ring that belonged to his mother, the late Princess Diana. The wedding date has already been declared a bank holiday and the royal nuptials will have an estimated worldwide TV audience of more than one billion! 2. Hugh Hefner and Crystal Harris: Proving that it’s never too late to fall in love (especially if you’re the original Playboy) Hugh Hefner proposed to West Brom girlfriend Crystal Harris on Christmas Eve (then announced the news on Twitter), making this the third marriage for Hef. Blonde bombshell Harris, who is 60 years younger than her fiancé, starred in the sixth season of ‘The Girls Next Door’ and is a former Playboy Playmate.

3. Natalie Portman and Benjamin Millepied: In a ballet-inspired romance, Black Swan star Natalie Portman announced her engagement to choreographer Benjamin Millepied, who whipped her into shape for the starring role. Just in time for the new year, Portman also revealed she’s pregnant with the couple’s first child, making 2011 a banner year for the bride and mum-to-be. 4. Jessica Simpson and Eric Johnson: After dating just six months, former NFL player Johnson proposed to singer Simpson with a five-carat ruby and diamond engagement ring by Neil Lane on the lucky date of 11/11. Since both have been married previously (Simpson to singer Nick Lachey, who announced his engagement to Vanessa Minnillo earlier the same month), we’re wondering if this second wedding for each will be kept simple or be a total meringue.

y Weddings 5. Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth: Shortly after she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, actress Reese Witherspoon announced her engagement to agent Jim Toth. The pair began dating shortly after Reese split from ex-boyfriend Jake Gyllenhaal, who appears to have started a hot romance with Taylor Swift. There’s been no public wedding plans as yet, but there’s no doubt Witherspoon’s two children will be involved in the nuptials.

6. Lauren Bush and David Lauren: In what will be one of the most glamorous weddings of 2011, two famous American surnames will join forces, as former model and do-gooder Lauren Bush (niece of Presidents George W. and granddaughter of George H.W.) weds fashion executive David Lauren (son of designer Ralph Lauren). The couple, who met at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Gala in 2004, got engaged at the very same place in December when David presented Lauren with a diamond engagement ring. A couple of pressing questions for the bride: Will she ask her future father-in-law to design her wedding gown? Will she take his last name ... Lauren Lauren?

7. Michael Bublé and Luisana Lopilato: Canadian crooner Bublé will wed the Argentine actress in April, with a ceremony in Argentina followed by a celebration in Vancouver. Afterward, the pair are planning an African honeymoon with a mix of relaxing and voluntary charity work. 8. Mike Tindall and Zara Phillips: Royal wedding bells will ring once again in 2011, as Zara Phillips (daughter of Princess Anne and Captain Mark Phillips) marries England rugby player Mike Tindall. The athletic couple (Phillips is an equestrian rider) announced their engagement less than two months after the world began to buzz about the upcoming marriage of Phillips’ cousin, Prince William.

8

9. Leann Rimes and Eddie Cibrian: This controversial couple (the pair reportedly left their spouses for one another) took their much-publicized relationship to the next step when Rimes was spotted right after the holidays wearing a 5-carat oval diamond ring. Not only will the country crooner gain a new husband, she’ll also become a stepmum to Cibrian’s two children from his previous marriage.

ABSOLUTE WEDDINGS ABROAD

Home or away? W

hether to get married in your home country or abroad is a big and exciting decision to make! For many couples, getting married abroad is a dream, but there are issues that need to be addressed. Positives for getting married abroad The world is your oyster, as far as choosing the location for your wedding abroad. The choices are almost endless and you have far more scope for innovation and creativity than you would at home. Many choose to get married abroad to make sure they have great weather for their wedding. A wedding abroad in a hot climate greatly lessens the chance of a ruined dress and soggy guests on your big day! Weddings abroad can actually be a lot cheaper than getting married at home, too. Although you have greater transport costs, you could save money. Many hotels and package companies provide excellent value deals, while the expense of weddings at home can quickly spiral with hundreds of guests, meals, drinks and evening parties. Holding your wedding abroad can also be a lot less stressful. Many packages include a lot of the wedding co-ordination (a planner). There will usually be a lot fewer guests to organise, and your wedding abroad can easily be very simple, even with just the two of you if you wish. You can also combine your wedding abroad with your honeymoon! Some things to consider For a wedding abroad, you may be limited as to the number of guests you can invite. It is common to ask very close family and friends to join you for your marriage abroad, but beyond that it is a lot to ask other people to pay out and often isn’t practical. Couples may feel guilty about this. Remember that getting married abroad is an increasingly common choice which people are used to. You could always hold a party or blessing when you return home so that all your friends and family can be included in the celebration. Some may worry that by getting married abroad they are missing out on the traditional wedding. Remember though, there is no typical wedding abroad. Although the stereotypical idea of getting married abroad is a ceremony on the beach, it is just as possible to have a white wedding in a French chateau. By planning your wedding abroad from afar, though, you are less likely to be able to check out the venue beforehand and you may worry about things going wrong. If you do decide to marry abroad look out for testimonials from other couples who have married there. Also make sure that you keep in touch with a contact at your destination or hotel. They should be able to reassure you.

G

Viva Las Vegas!

etting married abroad in Las Vegas is popular because it’s one of the easiest and most convenient wedding abroad destinations. It can also offer excellent value for money for your wedding abroad. Unlike some wedding abroad destinations, Las Vegas has no residency requirements. You will need a US visa or waiver form to hold your wedding. To hold your wedding in Las Vegas, you will need a marriage licence. You can get one of these for your ceremony from the Marriage Licence Bureau in Las Vegas. The marriage licence is valid for a year from the date of issue. Both you and your partner will need to be present to apply.

52

Documentation required to hold your Las Vegas wedding: A valid passport Birth certificate If you are divorced, the Decree Absolute If you are widowed, the death certificate Written consent from parents or guardians if either of you is under 18 If you have changed your name, a change of name deed. After your ceremony you can obtain a marriage certificate from the Las Vegas Wedding Bureau. It can take a few days to prepare and can be posted to you in the UK if required.

The pros and cons of holding a wedding ceremony in a foreign land

The legals...

It is easy to be put off by the perceived red tape surrounding a wedding ceremony abroad. It doesn’t need to be complicated, as long as you do your research. The legalities of getting married abroad vary from country to country. It is best to check everything out thoroughly, and well in advance of your ceremony abroad. Legal status The key thing to check out, when it comes to legal status, is that your marriage is valid in both the country where you plan to hold your ceremony abroad, and in your home country. To find out about the legal status of your wedding abroad in your destination country, the best way to get the most reliable information is to contact the relevant embassy or consulate. For your marriage abroad to also be recognised at home you must abide by the legal requirements in your home country. For example if you are under 18, you still need a parental letter of consent as you would at home, regardless of the law in the country where you have chosen to hold your ceremony abroad. For up-to-date advice contact the British Embassy. Documentation checklist: To marry abroad you will need documentation to prove your identity and eligibility. You will need to check on a country-by-country basis but the chances are you will always need to following: r Full Birth Certificate. r Passport (which will still be valid for at least six months). r Sworn Affidavits – statement signed and stamped by a solicitor confirming both parties are free to marry. r Notice of Marriage / Certificate of Freedom to Marry r Proof of Residence –documentation with proof of your current residence. r If you are divorced – a Decree Absolute. r If you are a widower – a Death certificate and previous Marriage Certificate. r If you are adopted – an Adoption certificate. r If you are under 18 – letter of consent from a parent or guardian. r If you have changed your name by deed poll – stamped proof by a solicitor. You will need the original documents.

So what is the secret to an everlasting and happy marriage? We ask three local happily married couples for their advice to newly-weds David and Manon Courtney How long have you been married? It was 21 years on December 1st 2010. What do you think is the secret to a lasting and happy marriage? David: Understanding, consideration and keeping the romance alive! Manon: Love and respect‌ and sharing the good times, as well as the bad.

How long have you been married? We’ve been married for 56 years (though it seems like only yesterday!) What do you think is the secret to a lasting and happy marriage? Both: Give and take, live for the day and having a great sense of humour. Laughter between the two is a great bonus!

Peter and Karin Jarrette Picture by Diana Frangi

Are you happily married? If so, tell us about it! Please send a picture (either on your wedding day or more recent) and 50-100 words, telling us how you and your spouse have made your marriage special. Email words and picture to: marriage@absolutemagazine.co.uk

How long have you been married? We married in 1989 (so, 21 going on 22 yrs). What do you think is the secret to a lasting and happy marriage? Peter: For me I’d say the main big secret is having no secrets from each other! But a very important element to a happy union is not judging your partner by their job, finances, friends, fickle family members and certainly never, ever by their former lovers, spouses or fashion errors. Karin: Firstly, to never judge! The most important thing though, is that once you have become an official couple, never lose sight of the fact that you were once and always will be two distinct individuals.

To pre, or not to pre NO

Psychotherapist and counsellor, Robert Heaven, asks the pressing question, are prenups an escape route from commitment?

I

f your fiancé told you that they wanted an escape route from your relationship, would you feel pressured to accept? Would your level of trust and sense of commitment towards them change? If you are answering “yes” perhaps marriage with a prenuptial agreement isn’t the right route for you. Trust? Prenups are arrangements for endings before “forever” has taken place and in some ways much like funeral plans which offer many of the same benefits i.e. peace of mind and a measure of financial security. While death is a certainty, relationship endings should not be. It certainly isn’t romantic to be thinking about endings before things are only just starting, and is a sure way to pour water on the flame of love. But it’s not just romance that can suffer… it’s trust too. Trust is the key foundation stone of all relationships; it is implicit in relationships from a very early stage, nurtured by a sense of commitment. Prenups offer an escape route from commitment and while it might never be taken, the planned ending can nonetheless haunt the relationship and can undermine trust in the basic premise that marriage is a commitment to spend a life with another person until “death do them part.”

“Prenups offer an escape route from commitment and while it might never be taken, the planned ending can nonetheless haunt the relationship”

60

Diminished trust within a relationship can have many affects. It can be a source of constant resentment; implying that one or other person is not 100% focused on making things work. The extreme situation is that a prenup can be used as a threat, as a weapon to be brought out whenever there are disagreements or arguments between the couple; a far cry from love and romance. Doubt? So perhaps the question for couples thinking of having a prenup is about how much do they really trust each other? Prenups sew the seeds of doubt in fields of love and undermine the foundation stone of trust, in their marriage. So, if one person in the relationship proposes a legally binding prenuptial agreement, some people would recommend that the only route to a mutually acceptable resolution would be for both parties to participate in ensuring it is comfortable – this sort of process can be required if one party has, for example, substantial family wealth that they are forced to ring fence. General advice from relationship experts would be to decline a marriage offer if there is any sense of discomfort about a proposed pre-nuptial agreement. Love, friendship, mutual respect – these remain the true points of ‘agreement’ in any sustainable relationship that is deserving of a marriage or civil partnership.

...that is the question YES

Filex Lisa Burton-Durham of Mayo Wynne Baxter discusses the advantages of taking out a pre-nuptial agreement before tieing the knot

Y

ou’re young, you’re in love, and you trust each other. No need for a pre-nuptial agreement before you tie the knot, right? Not so fast with the rose-tinted specs! With the wedding season almost upon us it may be time for some consideration to your financial planning before you walk down the aisle. Sadly with many marriages failing each year the demand for Pre-Nuptial Agreements (or PreNups) is becoming increasingly popular proving that they are not just for the rich and famous. In other European countries and the US, prenups have become as much of a part of the preparations for marriage as the flowers and photographer. In England and Wales however, they have generally been the preserve of the very wealthy and were not binding on our courts and as a consequence they were often difficult to enforce. However, following a recent landmark decision in the Supreme Court, that is likely to change. The Supreme Court recently created a very significant precedent for family law by upholding the enforcement of an heiress’s pre-nup whose fortune ran into many millions of pounds. The ruling in this case (Radmacher v Granatino ) is likely to affect the finances of hundreds and thousands of UK families who deal with divorce each year, whether millionaires or not. So what is a Pre-Nuptial Agreement and do you need one? A Pre-Nuptial Agreement (Pre-Nup) is simply a legal document that describes how property and assets brought into and acquired during the marriage or civil partnership will be treated if there is a divorce. They are designed to protect the assets of individuals as they enter their legal union. Should their union end in divorce it will help to establish who comes out with what. For example, a fortune built up by one partner before the marriage could be excluded from a divorce settlement, as can anything inherited before or after the wedding or indeed any money that is ring fenced for children from a previous relationship. A Pre-Nup isn’t essential for everyone. A couple entering a first marriage or civil partnership with few assets and debts can generally forgo one. However, if you find yourself in any of the following circumstances it is most definitely worth considering:-

B0211_060_061 Prenup.indd 2

• You are getting married in later life and have already built up assets of your own and you wish to protect them. • You have children from a previous relationship and wish for your assets to be inherited by them. • You are getting married for a second time and wish to keep your assets independent of one another. • You are expecting an inheritance and wish to keep it within your family. • You have significant assets such as properties, investments, antiques etc. • One of you or both of you own (or partly) own a business. • One of you is significantly older than the other. • You simply want to ensure your future financial security.

Arranged the Pre-nup ?

Unsentimental or just plain sensible? Whilst pre-nups are growing in popularity, understandably it remains one of the toughest subjects for couples to discuss. Many take the view it is unromantic whereas it actually reinforces that the marriage is for love and not money. Couples should regard it as a practical approach to marriage and sensible financial planning. It could be as important as discussing future children. If you are considering a pre-nup it is vital that you raise the subject with your partner well in advance of your wedding or civil ceremony. You should allow three months for the agreement to be finalised and it should be signed at least three weeks before the ceremony. A Pre-Nup is bespoke and as such should always be drafted by an experienced family lawyer. Always ensure you seek legal advice. However unsentimental it seems, Pre-Nups are about both parties feeling secure in their relationship. It doesn’t mean you don’t trust each other or indeed that the marriage won’t work‌ probably quite the opposite.

Call us on 0800 84 94 101

Who should you speak to about Pre-Nups? In the first instance you should find a lawyer that specialises in family law and has experience in this area. Ideally pick a firm that has Lexcel accreditation as this means that they have been audited by the Law Society and meet the highest standards of management and customer care such as Mayo Wynne Baxter who are one of the region’s largest law firms.

Fabulous

FLORENCE

I Accademia David di Michelangelo

Florence is renowned for its history and fabulous works of art. But don’t just take a weekend break! The only way to fully appreciate this wonderful city is to take your time - and do it in style, says Neil Geraghty

62

f ever there was a city that needed time to do it justice then it’s Florence. Take one look at the exhausted hordes pouring out of the Uffizi Gallery on a Sunday afternoon and you’ll be glad you didn’t just come for the weekend. Almost every church and palazzo is home to a treasure trove of art and you simply can’t do the city justice on a weekend break. The secret with Florence is to slow down and do it in style. After a week you’ll have barely scratched the surface but you’ll get a much better appreciation of the hidden beauty and civilized pace of life of this majestic Renaissance city. A good way to slip into the continental vibe is to travel there by train. St Pancras International has really put the glamour back into European travel and there’s no better place to begin your Italian odyssey than upstairs in Carluccio’s. Over divine coffee and croissants you can admire the stunning Victorian architecture and delightful bronze statue of John Betjeman clutching his bowler hat in the wind. The French departure announcements are purringly seductive and in the spacious premier class carriages you can glide to Paris perusing Wallpaper over a champagne lunch. In Paris, check into the charming Hotel du Jeu de Paume on the romantic Ile St Louis, take a floodlit stroll along the Rive Gauche and in the morning you’ll wake up refreshed for the early departure to Florence from nearby Gare de Bercy. The 12 hour train journey is one of the most scenic in Europe passing through the verdant Burgundy hills and snow capped Swiss Alps before plunging through the Simplon Pass and down to the serene Italian Lakes. The train arrives in Florence at about 10 o’ clock in the evening and nothing quite prepares you for the sight of the floodlit cathedral dome that seems to float over the city like a giant mirage. It’s this view that every tourist visiting Florence wants and they don’t get any better than at Hotel Savoy. Make sure you book a room on the 4th or 5th floor facing Piazza de Republicca and you’ll be rewarded with astonishingly close views of the magnificent marble campanile and soaring dome rising up over the terracotta tiled rooftops You can’t beat The Savoy’s location which is just minutes from all the main sights and the hotel also offers a rare opportunity to experience some contemporary home comforts which are often lacking in Florence’s overly kitsch hotels. Once the grande dame of Florentine hotels, The Savoy was distinctly frayed at the edges before it was taken over by the Rocco Forte Collection. Olga Polizzi, Rocco Forte’s sister

ABSOLUTE TRAVEL “Look out for Giambologna’s bronze Mercury which seems to flit through the air balanced on the tip of his toes. Looking at sculptures like this, you can fully appreciate the grace and movement that is the hallmark of Renaissance art.” designed the interior and the rooms with their muted earth tones, delicate pastel fabrics and warm herringbone wooden floors giving it a homely feminine touch. Orchids brighten up the public areas and throughout the hotel, paintings and objets d’art pay tribute to Florence’s often forgotten role as birthplace of Italian haute couture. Downstairs the cosy restaurant with poppy flock wallpaper and comfortable stripy sofas spills out into Piazza Republicca where whether it’s an organic market, medieval dancing display or political demonstration, there’s always something to watch. To get the most out of Florence it’s worth doing a bit of planning. Book your tickets ahead online for The Uffizi and The Accademia at www.museumsinflorence.com and you’ll be able to enjoy Botticelli’s Birth of Venus and Michelangelo’s David without a frustrating hour long queue for tickets. It’s also worth just concentrating on one famous sight a day and then heading off to explore some of Florence’s lesser known attractions which are equally as fabulous but have only a fraction of the crowds. The Bargello is a good example; a wonderfully atmospheric crumbling medieval palazzo that is home to one of Italy’s finest collections of Renaissance sculpture. The galleries lead off from a romantic crenellated courtyard and contain a who’s who of sculptural masterpieces. Look out for Giambologna’s bronze Mercury which seems to flit through the air balanced on the tip of his toes. Looking at sculptures like this, you can fully appreciate the grace and movement that is the hallmark of Renaissance art. San Marco Monastery is another overlooked artistic tour de force. Located in the north of the city it’s especially lovely walking there on a Sunday morning when church bells echo along the empty streets and cafés clatter to the sound of breakfast espresso machines. The monastery houses the greatest collection of paintings by the 15th Century friar Fra Angelico who lived there in the 1430s. He painted frescoes in many of the tiny monastic cells including delightful Nativity scenes. The downstairs’ gallery contains a Christmas card collection of multicoloured saints and angels with parrot wings. They were painted for wealthy patrons using priceless pigments including lapis lazuli and were mounted in sumptuous gold leaf Gothic frames. Nearby, the Piazza della Santissima Annunciata is one of the most picturesque squares in Florence containing two delightful monkey mermaid fountains splashing in the sunlight. The church of the same name is home to one of the most beautiful shrines in Florence. Legend has it that a medieval painting of The Annunciation was begun by a monk who fell asleep only to wake up and discover that it had been finished by angels. Seeing the shrine with its glittering silver lanterns and the Madonna with her gold crown softly sparkling in the candlelight you can almost believe this was true. Wandering around Florence you stumble across some real gems. Tucked away in the cloisters of Santa Maria Novella near the railway station is one of the world’s oldest working pharmacies which dates

“Almost every church and palazzo is home to a treasure trove of art and you simply can’ secret with Florence is to slow down and do it in style. After a week you’ll have barely scr appreciation of the hidden beauty and civilized pace of life of this majestic Renaissance cit back to 1221 and by any standards is one of the most gorgeous shops you’re ever likely to visit. Underneath sumptuously decorated Gothic arches, gleaming mahogany cabinets show off exquisitely packaged soaps, perfumes and folk remedies made from locally grown herbs and flowers. Look out for the Acqua della Regina perfume which was concocted for the Queen of France, Catherine de Medici in the 16th Century while any of the simple flower colognes, almond sweets and herbal liquors make perfect gifts. Florentine food is very highly regarded in Italy but it is often hard to find in the city due to a plethora of tourist restaurants which often compromise on quality. You’ll need plenty of coffee breaks in Florence and one of the loveliest cafés is Gilli directly opposite The Savoy’s main entrance. With its chandeliers and waiters in dickie ties this is Florence’s grand café and you might expect to pay out an arm and a leg. On the contrary, the velvety cappuccinos are some of the cheapest in town, particularly if you do as the Italians do and stand at the counter for a coffee. You can then grab some of their delicious pastries and disappear into your hotel room for a self indulgent afternoon break. On the opposite side of the square, Giubbe Rosse is a wonderful historic lunch spot. It’s here that many famous futurist artists and writers gathered at the beginning of the 20th century and the walls are covered in cubist and dada paintings. The food is simple canteen style pasta and risotto laid out in tureens at the front. Again, for such a historic spot, it’s remarkably good value. For cheap fast food though you can’t beat the 64

Fratellini brothers who are absolute legends in Florence. Working from a cubby hole sized shop they rustle up the tastiest Panini in town using the freshest local cheeses and hams. Grab a wild boar salami panino and stroll down to Piazza della Signoria where you can sit by the Neptune Fountain and drink in the lively atmosphere of Florence’s most magnificent medieval square. Old style designer trattorias are all the rage in Italy right now and da Garibardi’s with its wood beamed ceiling and lime washed walls covered in copper pans oozes nostalgic charm. The trattoria specializes in Florentine classics which with their full flavoured simplicity are wonderful comfort food. Look out for carabaccia, a thick onion soup. Legend has it that Catherine de Medici, a native of Florence took the recipe to Paris where it developed into the classic French soupe d’onion. Gran frito misto Toscano is a mixture of lamb, rabbit and chicken fried in fluffy batter that the locals like to joke is the grandest KFC in the world. Salsicce e fagioli is a heartwarming stew of herb sausages and borlotti beans in a rich tomato sauce while zuccotto is a dreamy cinnamon and brandy trifle. Before leaving Florence you’ll want to experience the classic “Room with a View” panorama of Florence. To do this cross the famous Ponte Vecchio which sparkles with tiny goldsmith shops and veer left up through the wooded hillside to Piazzale Michelangelo. At sunset the view of the cathedral framed by the silvery River Arno and rolling Tuscan hills is sublime. After dinner at da Garibardi’s stroll to the railway station and jump on the night train where you can trundle to Paris in your own

ABSOLUTE LOCAL HISTORY View of Chanctonbury from Wiston Lake courtesy of Steyning Museum

THE RING

of wonder Tim Parker tells of the mysterious and beautiful Sussex spot, Chanctonbury Ring

I

t is not in Sussex, you may say, so where the devil is it? Well, I’ll tell you. Chanklebury, in the Sussex dialect, means a hill fort with a ring of trees. Now you know it, Chanklebury is of course Chanctonbury Ring high on the Sussex Downs, 794 feet high to be precise. It lies on the border of the parishes of Washington and Wiston in West Sussex, within the Borough of Worthing. For many years Chanctonbury was famed for the beautiful crown of beech trees planted on the site of an old fort. A young man, Charles Goring, planted the trees in 1760. In his old age, Charles wrote a poem about his wonderful handiwork: Oh! Could I live to see thy top In all its beauty tress’d That time’s arrived; I’ve had my wish And lived to eighty-five I’ll thank my God who gave such grace As long as e’er I live. The crown of beech trees that Charles had planted and lived to see grow and thrive, remained a famous and beautiful feature of the Sussex landscape until the great storm of 1987, when most of his trees were torn out of the ground, leaving the Ring ragged and thin. But, thankfully, it survived. The Ring is still there and new trees are beginning to restore it to something of its former glory. When researching and writing about Sussex, it has always struck me just how much went on in ancient times on the top of the windy Downs. As far back as 4,000 years BC, Neolithic man mined and fashioned flint so skilfully

68

that many of their flints were exported to the Eastern Mediterranean. And it was not only Neolithic Man who worked and lived on the Downs. Archaeologists excavating the remains of the Hill Fort found proof that the fort had been made by Iron Age Man. And there were other finds, a young girl with a dagger and some shards of bronze age pottery. There was very little fighting in Sussex when the Romans invaded England. Caesar and the Romans were welcomed by King Cogidumnus, a Belgic who had the sense to know that, as he had little chance of defeating the Romans, the right thing to do was to join them. Sensibly, he submitted to Roman rule in exchange for some fancy titles and became Tiberius Claudius Augustus, a loyal supporter of the Roman Empire. I wonder how many of his subjects regarded him a traitor. In any event, he lived to tell the tale. As for the Romans, they soon made themselves comfortable in Sussex as a visit to the sites of Bignor Villa and Fishbourne Palace outside Chichester will make clear. The Romans too were attracted to Chanctonbury Ring and before long had built not one, but two temples on the site of the Iron Age Fort. Many years later Chanctonbury played a key role in the defeat of the Spanish Armada. Our History books tell us that in 1577 when King Philip of Spain’s great Armada sailed up the English Channel in an attempt to remove Queen Elizabeth from the throne of England and make the country Catholic, a great beacon set high on Chanctonbury Hill was lit to warn the country of the Spaniards’ advance. In the 17th and 18th centuries the land round Chanctonbury was used extensively for cattle grazing, and in 1870 a dew pond was constructed. Dew ponds, used to collect water from the atmosphere, were particularly

Nowadays while there are few left that are in working order, the remains of many of them can be found throughout Sussex. It is good to report that Chanctonbury still has its dew pond, which was restored by the Sussex Society of Downsmen in 1970. Over the years there have been many stories about Sussex and the Devil. The best known is the tale of Old Nick (as the Devil was known), trying to cut through the Downs at Brighton in order to bring the sea through the Dyke so it would drown his Christian enemies living on the other side. You may smile and raise an eyebrow but there is plenty of evidence of devil worship in the countryside close to Chanctonbury Ring. Covens gathering in Patching woods? Many think they still gather there. Whether true or false, I must report that I have been unable to get the date of their next meeting. Superstition clings to Chanctonbury Ring. It is said that one can raise the Devil at the ring by running round the clump of trees seven times in an anti-clockwise direction. At the finish the Devil will offer you a bowl of soup for your soul. Or, if a woman wants to conceive, she should sleep for one night under the Chanctonbury trees. There is no mention as to whether or not she should have company. Over the years there have been many reports of UFOs and other paranormal happenings on Chanctonbury. Easy to dismiss, but sometimes not so easy to explain. The little green men from Mars have been such a long time in coming perhaps they don’t exist but the reports of unusual happenings continue to this day. Who is to say what occurs within a ring where the occult has been practised and so many spirits have come and gone for over eight thousand years. Here follows a report from one Charles Walker. ‘On the 24th August 1974, four members of the Sky Watchers Group, myself included, settled down for a night under the stars. At approximately 11pm, Mr Lincoln, one of our group, was walking through the centre of the Ring when he was lifted several feet off the ground. Mr Lincoln remained suspended in mid air for several seconds. During this time he was obviously in some considerable pain and cried out ‘No more, no more!’ He then dropped to the ground landing heavily on his back. He was very shaken by his experience, as we all were but unlike the rest of us Mr Lincoln refused to return to the site for further studies.’

ABSOLUTE EDUCATION

Which Way Now? Sixteen-year-olds are currently thinking about what do post year 11. But what are the benefits of staying on in education these days? It pays to keep learning After Year 11, you have a lot more choice about what you want to do. Whichever route you choose, it pays to keep learning. More and more employers are looking for people with higher level skills and qualifications. Although qualifications cannot guarantee you a job, people with the right skills and qualifications have a better chance of finding a job with good prospects and more money. They may also have more job security.

Making plans in Year 11 Get your personal Year 11 calendar from Connexions for a guide to what you need to do and when. If you’ve got a particular career in mind, it’s also worth finding out if you need to have specific qualifications, skills or experience.

Which route should you follow? There are lots of different ways of gaining further qualifications, skills or work experience - and the range of options is growing. You could: Continue in full-time education, either at school or college Continue your learning through work-based training If you’re aged 16 or 17, the ‘September Guarantee’ means that you’ll definitely be able to continue learning. Everyone in this age group due to leave education is guaranteed an offer of a place on an appropriate course - and information, advice and guidance to help weigh up their options.

Staying in full-time education You’ll find a much wider range of subjects and qualifications than you’ve been able to choose from up until now, at school. As well as A levels, you can choose from a growing range of work-related qualifications. Selected schools and colleges are also offering the Diploma qualification for 14 to 19-year-olds. Depending on what you want to study, you could decide

to stay on at school, or go to a sixth form college, specialist college or further education college.

Learning at work If you want to start work, it’s important to pick a job that offers you planned training leading to a nationally recognised qualification. There are lots of ways to improve your skills and get qualifications, from Apprenticeships to the ‘Entry to Employment’ scheme. As an alternative, you may be entitled to ‘Time off for Study or Training’.

Getting work experience When you’ve finished your studies, you could consider taking time out before going on to higher education. Voluntary work, travel and working abroad can all be ways of gaining valuable experience.

Useful Contacts Connexions personal advisers can give confidential help and advice on a range of issues - you should have been introduced to a personal adviser in school. You can also contact a Connexions Direct adviser for free, confidential advice - by phone, e-mail, webchat or text message. Connexions Direct helpline: 0808 0013219. www.connexions-direct.com

People who know you best Once you’re armed with expert advice, it can be useful to talk over your options with the people who know you best - family and friends. In the end, you’ll have the best idea of what’s right for you. If you’re planning to work towards a particular career or higher education course, don’t be put off just because it means taking a different direction from friends or family members. 72
