Just like buses, the parties all arrived at once this month; Sussex has been a place to socialise galore. From fashion shows to launch parties, balls and award ceremonies, they all brought the socialites out of the woodwork, proving once again that our county really is high up on the social radar; especially when the sun is out. So, a big ‘thank you’ to all of you who have invited Absolute Brighton to cover your

events this month. I must say, I did have a problem squeezing them all in, but just like those skinny jeans you know you simply have to squash yourself into, it was definitely worth it! I am sure you’ll agree when I say that through these testing times for many, it is nice to have an excuse for everyone to get out and just have some frolic and fun. So, enjoy our social pages as always (which I know you do,

from the many emails I receive about them.) Cricket is another event that draws in the crowds across Sussex during the warmer months, and

Lauren Johns of Fresh Agents with Verity Craig, Editor of Absolute Brighton

A colourful fashion show took place recently at The Dyke Golf Club, put on by The Brighton & Hove Soiree Rotary in aid of The Martlets Hospice in Hove. Organiser of the show, Terrina Steel, used clothes from Walk In Wardrobe, Box 2 and Tramp Vintage clothes, as well as some of the latest trends to be worn on the golf course, provided by Cuckfield Golf Club. The garments were an eclectic mix of evening gowns, day wear and vintage wear for all ages and sizes. About 100 people attended the event with professional and non-professional ladies modelling on the catwalk, as well as one lucky man accompanying them - Peter Jarrette. Hair was beautifully coiffured by Electric Hair Salon in Brighton and make-up applied by Zena Mccarthy and Clair Pimblebury. Commentary was by Nicky Alan, founder of Box 2, and Past Rotarian President, Peter Mantle. ÂŁ1,350 was raised on the night, and all the money will go to The Martlets Hospice and other Rotary-supported local charities. The Rotary Club holds many fundraising events during the year for both local and international charities. For further information, please contact Terrina Steel on: 0777 5513188

ABSOLUTE SOCIALITE DIARY

ABSOLUTE COMMENT

What’s going on....?

SUN, SEA & SOCIALITES

Mo Hunter-Shine says it like it is

The price of morality PJ, aka Peter Jarrette Brighton’s favourite socialite, with the latest in great new venues, events and happenings

Dear diary “I don’t get out of bed for anything under 22 degrees.” That was a recent and very topical Facebook status from Catherine Pryce of Kemptown, which had me in stitches and wishing I’d posted it. Our warm, dry summer that came early is still mooching about, and very welcome it is, since we’ve all been dashing easily between launches, lunches, parties, fashion shows and all manner of art and music festival events. In past and usually wet and windy spring /summer seasons, our social sets have been crammed six to an umbrella and soggy from our knees down, or stepping out of equally crowded cars and taxis only to plunge into curb side, fast moving torrents of water ruining one pair of suede shoes after another as we make our rounds. The 2011 party season has made it easy so far for us to be breezy enroute to and fresh on arrival at all the fun that Brighton and Hove has to offer. Wonderful! Recently I hosted a small night at Bank Bar on Western Road where yet another new dancetrack, the fourth to date, featuring my guest vocals was debuted to party attendees. Last month I wrote about my adventure as I recorded ‘I’m Dirty’ for the new outfit Audio Hijackers, and now Robert White of Hysteric Ego has produced his latest track featuring me called “So Sexy (I don’t wanna be)”. Already it is getting New York attention, although at Bank Bar everyone was busy chatting about the good weather so I’m sure most missed hearing it! My wife Karin and I were invited along to the 10th anniversary of the new look Indian Summer on East Street. We arrived to a crammed event of familiar faces and lovely food. I was seen around town later with two goody bags full of little jars of their fab sauces as we checked out the launch of May’s month-long, city-wide music festival, The Great Escape at Haunt in Pool Valley, as guests of Damian Frizzell. Afterward I might have been spotted amongst a table full of ladies drinking bottles of white wine outside of the Colonnade Bar at the Theatre Royal... I cannot be sure! We’ve been to a private view at David Donno’s Naked Eye Gallery, Farm Mews where the red-haired firecracker Kate Alleston of Graze had her waiters lay out another fantastic assortment of canapés from the nearby restaurant’s kitchen. Afterwards I might have been spotted at Martin Webb’s charity pub, The Robin Hood, surrounded by ladies and wine bottles at their annual street party... again, I cannot be sure! I can be sure that I was surrounded by lady socialites and models backstage in the changing rooms as we jumped out of one set of clothes and into another at the Dyke Golf Club’s Rotary Charity Fashion Soiree on behalf of The Martlets. I was the only male model to strut down the catwalk booked personally by fashionista, stylist and event organiser Terrina Steel. I was personally styled by Natalie Wileman of Former Glory for an eager and appreciative crowd. Nobody in the audience suspected that I was near disabled with a dodgy knee that had to be strapped up. So now we learn of more heatwaves poised to envelope the south coast and beyond and we have the hot excitement of the VIP at the Brighton Beer Festival 2011 to look forward to. Surely the VIP will have tables full of Brighton’s ladies gasping for chilled wines and now that many of them are familiar with a tad more than my dodgy knee I am duty bound to be surrounded by them.... I can be sure! PJ pj@greycellevents.com www.facebook.com/peter.jarrette www.twitter.com/Socialitepete

24

Being rich and famous can buy lots of privileges, which enable those lucky few to avoid many of the usual problems endured by those of us who travel through life economy class. They can avoid queues with first class tickets, enjoy exclusive treatment with VIP passes to events, and they don’t take the bus. Very nice. Why shouldn’t they enjoy the benefits of their wealth and fame – I know I would! Why go with the masses, when you can float above normal life on a privileged cloud? However, there is a seedy side beginning to rear its ugly head. It would appear now money can also control what people think about you and your behaviour. If you are rich enough, you can now hide your misdeeds and misdemeanours behind a super injunction, which can buy you the right not to be disapproved of, or judged by others, something which most of us have to live with all our lives. The arrival of such powerful communication tools such as Facebook and Twitter has resulted in news and gossip being instant. Nowadays there is nowhere to hide! But this does not mean that if you are wealthy, you should be able to hide your wrongdoings from the public gaze, does it? I am sure those who manage to get these super injunctions imposed enjoy the trappings that fame brings them when it suits them. If lucky enough, we should be able to enjoy wealth, but I do not believe it should be used as a shield against moral judgement.

“Then he starred in Baywatch, the perfect vehicle for his finely-toned ego...” The Hoff Has anyone else noticed the constant presence now of one David Hasselhoff? I was a great fan of Knight Rider many years ago, the farfetched series about a fabulous car that could talk, think and do almost anything. Hasselhoff was the star, as cheesy then as he is now, wandering through the programme with perfectly coiffured hair, tight jeans and a snug leather jacket. Then he starred with Pammy in Baywatch, the perfect vehicle for his finely-toned ego. Some years later he was there, singing, when the Berlin wall came down. Indeed, he even appeared to believe he was instrumental in its downfall! More recently his involvement with America’s Got Talent revived his career and now WE have him. He has replaced Simon Cowell as one of the judges on Britain’s Got Talent, and although I wasn’t looking forward to seeing him instead of the hallowed, straight-talking Simon, he isn’t too bad. He seems to be in all the papers now, I see he was talking with Piers Morgan about his drinking days (yawn) and he has now found romance with a nice Welsh girl he met at rehearsals on BGT. I must admit he does seem to have the ability to send himself up, and seems pretty harmless. I’m quite happy to swap him for the hideous Russell Brand – America can have him!

ABSOLUTE CELEBRITY

SPOTLIGHT

Our undercover celebrity spies unravel the world of showbiz news and gossip

Feeling Blue About Eurovision? It came as a great downer for UK band Blue when they quickly went from being first (all be it for a split second) during the Eurovision results, to eleventh by the end of the show. Blue claim they were the victims of ‘political voting’ during this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, which they believe is the reason they finished eleventh in the annual event. The band, made up of Duncan James, Lee Ryan, Antony Costa and Simon Webbe represented the UK with their song ‘I Can’ at the event in Germany, but believe they would have finished higher if countries had voted for the ‘performance’ rather than their neighbours. Simon said: “It is often not really about the song but who your neighbours are. But we are proud of what we did.” Following their disappointment, Duncan, Lee and Simon stayed up until 6am, drinking Jaegermeister, champagne and vodka Red Bulls. while Antony was so gutted he went straight to bed! Blue’s fellow contestants Jedward , made up of twins John and Edward Grimes, came eighth for their song ‘Lipstick’ but they haven’t ruled out representing Ireland again, like Germany’s Lena Meyer-Landrut who performed for her country two years running (although, she did win last year.) Meanwhile, Blue had said in interviews before the competition that they could live with not winning, but that if Jedward scored above them that would be hard to live with. Oh dear!

Jane Fonda Shows Them How It’s Done On The Catwalk At 73 years old, Jane Fonda was decades older than her fellow models as she took to the catwalk for Naomi Campbell’s Fashion For Relief show last month. However, our front seat spies tell us, it wasn’t a case of

?

Jane keeping up with the youngsters, it was a case of them being outshone by her: “As soon as she stepped on to the runway, the crowd roared with a standing ovation and the show came alive. She looked absolutely stunning and very happy… and about 20 years younger than she is!”

She Is!

After months of speculation and tabloids across Europe desperately scratching for evidence, it has finally been confirmed by her father-in-law that former model and President Sarkozy’s wife Carla Bruni-Sarkozy is pregnant. Speaking to a German newspaper, the French Presidents father, Pal, said: “I am glad to be having a grandchild. I hope it will be a girl as beautiful as Carla.” Carla, 43, and Nicolas, 55, already have a large brood of four boys between them (the eldest being 26 years and the youngest being 12).

Celebrity style secrets …

how do they do it? Brad Pitt’s Make up Tips…

Exuding such stunning good looks, it is refreshing to hear from a celebrity make-up artist who recently worked on a film set with Brad Pitt that he is an ‘au natural’ kind of guy. We asked her to spill the beans on how much make-up and grooming it took to make the Hollywood sex symbol look so good, and she replied: “It’s his own make-up! He is a naturally good-looking guy who refuses to even have much make-up put on him on set other than anti-shine. There’s only a handful of guys blessed with such good looks as him. David Beckham is another one…”

Celebometer

Who’s going UP and who’s going DOWN this month… UP Having put on the most perfect wedding and invited all of us ‘commoners’ to watch it, we salute the Royal family this month and thank them for showing the world that the British still know how to put on a magical wedding (and for the day off of work!) The Royals are top of the spot this month. DOWN All of the so called ‘superinjunction stars’ are bottom of our celebometer this month. We find it infuriating that the public are teased with rumours of who and who hasn’t been up to no good but, is protected by a loophole in the British law! Surely if they’ve done it, let them be humiliated publicly rather than hide. Chances are, they’ll now do it again… and again. ABSOLUTE

The ‘best’ for Naim, however, isn’t measured in obscure technical parameters; rather through the experience of owning, using and enjoying. Listening to a Naim system is not about ‘bass’ or ‘treble’ or ‘stereo image’, but about forgetting the illusion of reproduction and connecting with the music. Choosing a Naim system is an experience like no other. New Sponsors… and a baker for Albion Fans

ALBION UPDATE Gus Poyet gets fitted for a suit

Martin Perry, Chief Executive of Brighton & Hove Albion FC, continues his update for Absolute Brighton readers on the latest developments at the Amex Community Stadium

O

ur brilliant football season is now over and following the victory parade attended by 10,000 fans, we have now turned our attention back to preparing for the opening of the Amex this summer. The Buckingham team (the main contractors) are into the finishing stages getting ready to hand over the keys to us so that we can commence the process of moving in this month. We are delighted to welcome on board three top businesses as sponsors of our first class lounges at the stadium. They include Profile, the exclusive fashion boutique which sells exclusive clothing by the world’s finest designers across its five stores in Brighton’s Lanes; Becks Peugeot, the Sussex-wide Peugeot dealers, who recently launched their brand new luxury Peugeot 508; and Bupa International, the Brighton-based international health insurer, known for its support of community projects in the city. It’s fantastic to have such high powered, quality business support for the Amex Stadium; they are playing an important part in helping us create the most exciting new stadium in the country and these lounges will be used to provide top quality corporate entertainment and events, with their names on the door. Food Glorious Food for Albion fans Another exciting piece of news, which is causing a lot of chat amongst our fans, is that the Amex will be the first stadium in the country to bake its own pies in-house, in a unique partnership between the Amex catering team and

Shoreham-based baker Piglet’s Pantry. The bakers will work alongside the kitchen team at the Amex to bake hearty and delicious ‘Albion pies’, on the day of matches, to ensure maximum flavour and freshness. Flavours include chicken and gammon, steak and Harveys ale and a vegetarian option. 5,500 will be baked for the first matchday in August, the large ones being served at the 15 kiosks in the stadium and smaller ones will be served to 1901 Club members in their lounges during half-time. Christmas Bookings And finally, it’s definitely not too early to be thinking about booking your place at the most desirable Christmas party in Sussex. You can choose between the world-class dancers and acrobats of the Cirque de la Célébration or classic Motown at one of the stadium’s very special Christmas party nights this year, from only £35 per person. Enjoy a superb drinks reception and dinner, spectacular live entertainment and a great disco on 2nd, 3rd, 8th, 9th, 10th, 15th, 16th, 17th, 21st, 22nd or 23rd December. There is even a party bus service to get you back into town! There’s nowhere better than the stunning American Express Community Stadium for your private Christmas parties too. With nine lounges we have party options for functions large and small. Contact our events team at 01273 542343 or email: ChristmasBrighton@azure.uk.com

The loose and naturally textured ‘just got out of bed’ look reigns supreme during this time of year and it’s easy to see why - it’s the perfect combination of natural playfulness and rebellious femininity. The great thing about this look is that it is easily achieved and wearable by everybody. Take the likes of Kate Moss, Sienna Miller and Jennifer Aniston who wear this style all year round; it just goes to show how versatile a look it is, transforming you from relaxed, summer-chic in the daytime to sexy but understated in the evening. blessed. All you need to do is add some volume so your waves cascade loosely around the face. Spritz some Kérastase Volumactive Expansion Spray (£15.50) onto damp hair near the roots and blow dry to add lift. You may even want to back brush slightly at the back of the crown for extra shape. Try not to be too neat when blow drying, a few considered flyaways adds to the look. You can strike the right balance when doing this by rubbing some Electric Serum (£17) between your

Wrapping the lengths around a pair of straighteners and twisting the hair as you pull downwards will also do the job. Work your way through and allow to cool. Now, brush out the hair using a Large Denman Paddle Brush and using a dry serum like Electric Serum, randomly pulling out sections of hair and twist it around your fingers to create that straggly beach look. ABSOLUTE MAKE UP Celebrity make-up artist Jeni Dodson is our independent beauty advisor bringing to you the latest beauty buzz and hot tips straight from the red carpet!

www.jenidodson.com

Looking radiant and gorgeous at any age! Whether you are hitting the beach, taking a cruise or just lounging poolside this summer, then how you look will be uppermost in your mind. As we get older we need to work just that little bit harder to achieve a radiant glow too. While you may want to camouflage signs of ageing, full-coverage foundation is not the way to go. Ideally, your makeup should allow your natural skin to shine through. Our golden Hollywood girls, Helen Mirren and Dame Judi Dench continue to channel maturity with such grace, and you can too! By updating your regular make-up routine with these simple make-up tips, you can ensue that you still look nifty after fifty. . . to infinity, and even beyond!

1. Look out for products that give you a dewy, moisturised complexion. Always prep with a moisturiser or choose a primer that will minimise the appearance of fine lines and open or enlarged pores. Opt for an illuminating primer for your cheeks, forehead and the bridge of your nose. It’s youthful to have a little sheen! 2. If a product makes your skin look drier or more wrinkled, it’s not the right one for you. Always test foundation on your face before you buy, it can look great on the back of your hand but the texture and colour of your face are totally different. Only apply it where you need help, and on the days when you don’t want to wear too much make-up, opt for a sheer tinted moisturiser; you can always tackle capillaries or pigmentation with a concealer. 3. Blush is a brilliant way to lift the face, but too much colour, worn too low, can drag features southwards. Cheeks should be blushed with soft apricot, peach and rosy hues. To give a youthful appearance apply high on the cheekbone, above the apple; this also has the effect of brightening the eye area and will make your face look fresh and radiant. 4. Eyes appear to shrink as we get older and can become hooded with time. As you notice lines appearing around your eyes, stick to colours that are more sober and softer, while altogether 40

avoiding metallic and frosted make-up. Eyeliner is low-maintenance and high impact, making the eyes look full and wide open. Opt for a soft powder eyeliner and apply very close to and into the lashline to give your eyes definition, but avoid very harsh colours. 5. Never skip curling your lashes. This allows more light to get to your eyes, making them look brighter and less droopy. If you have incredibly straight lashes and just can’t get a lift to hold when using eyelash curlers, an alternative solution could be the new eyelash perming procedure called LVL which incorporates dyeing the lashes too; fabulous for all year round. 6. Fill in sparse brows to make them more defined, it sets off your eyes, creating the illusion of lifting by drawing attention up instead of down. Don’t make your eyebrows too dark and don’t over-define them; the lighter and softer the better, switch to an ash brown, mink or grey. 7. Lips become thinner and drier with age. Dark lip liner and matte lipstick draw attention to the fine lines around your mouth. Choose a nourishing hydrating lipstick with a satiny finish or try a non-drying lip-gloss as gloss will make the lips look fuller. Use a lip base or apply a nude/lip coloured lip pencil; this will stop the lip colour from feathering and help it stay on longer.

ABSOLUTE DENTAL COLUMN

The power of the smile National Smile Month 17th May - 15th June British Dental Health Foundation

The smiling Marina Dentalcare team

It’s National Smile Month. What power toothbrush are you using to help you with yours, Sandy Bone of Marina Dentalcare asks?

F

requently we fall in the trap of thinking that faster means better. It doesn’t - it simply means faster! Power toothbrushes always move faster than manual brushes but that does not necessarily mean that they are better. However for many people, they do prove to be a more effective remover of plaque. This very sticky covering that grows on teeth can be difficult to remove, and for some, moving it effectively is more easily achieved with a power brush. Why is that, if it is not just the fact that they are faster? Firstly power brushes always have a small brush head, usually much smaller than the manual one that most people would choose. This is an enormous advantage when you are talking mouth/tooth care. Teeth are of a small and irregular rounded shape consisting of many convex and concave curves. If a tooth was held between the fingers and viewed, common sense would suggest a small brush, moved slowly and with much turning of the tooth, would be a successful way of cleaning this awkwardly rounded object. However, I am hoping that you will never be in a position to hold your own tooth! The manufactures of power brushes have looked at these problems, and the result is that all good power brushes have small brush heads. When buying, look to see if there is evidence of any clinical trails to measure how effective the brush is. This then is a vital reason why power brushes are so successful at cleaning teeth. Another reason is that power brushes have softer bristles. When viewing your tooth, you would also have realised that a firm bristle would simply scoot over the tooth surface while a softer bristle would stay on the tooth, more closely adapting to its surface shape. Both of these characteristics of the brush head, the softness, and the small size, will not only help you to maintain your mouth in a plaquefree state more easily they, also will also address another problem – sensitive teeth.

Most tooth sensitivity is caused by using a brush on one area of gum long enough and fast enough to burn and thus erode the gum line. That is, to remove the top layer of skin and render the gum a little bit sore. It is a very small area and will probably come across as a tingly feeling which is usually misinterpreted as ‘giving a good clean’. This friction burning of the gum is easier to do with a manual toothbrush, particularly if it is too big, and the filaments are too firm because it means that one or more teeth will not get a rest from the friction, and thus too much heat will be generated. Tissue damage of this type would normally heal, with no after effects but in the case of tooth brushing, the gum does not get a chance to heal properly before the damage happens again and again.

“When buying, look to see if there is evidence of any clinical trails to measure how effective the brush is." This results in the gum shrinking a little towards the tooth root and in the process uncovering soft sensitive dentine. The damage can be very painful particularly with cold temperatures. It is very difficult to clean until all of the plaque is gently removed and then to stop before any tissue is damaged. It is a skill that all hygienists are trying to teach to their patients. A power brush moves even faster than a manual one, and so a large brush head would create a situation that was potentially damaging. Therefore all good power brushes have a small brush head, which will dramatically decrease your chances of causing the damage that makes for sensitive teeth. So, when you are looking for a power brush we have established that you are looking for a small soft brush head. Now you need to make sure

that you have enough power to remove the sticky plaque with the brush. Power brushes come with three types of power source. The bottom of the range is the type that has an integral battery that cannot be changed and when the battery is empty the brush is disposed of. The second type of brush is the one that has replaceable batteries and the final power source is the rechargeable battery. The brush that is thrown away is not usually powerful enough to remove plaque consistently over many days and like the replacement batteries variety, it is not always possible to be fully aware of just how much power there is left in the battery. This results in a poor clean with insufficient power to remove the sticky plaque. The recharge variety of brush is much more powerful, and more reliable, as there is an indicator to tell you how much charge there is left in the brush. As a general rule, go for a recharge brush. Your next problem is - a sonic or a non sonic brush! Sonic brushes are useful in that they offer an extra dimension to your cleaning. Ultrasonics are used for cleaning in many situations with very good results. Most hygienists will at some time, or maybe all of the time, use an ultrasonic scaler when treating you. Sonic toothbrushes are based on the same technology, but slower! This make them safe for general use but still very effective. Some people, however, do not like the feel of the sonic brush and this is really personal preference as you can do a very good clean with a non sonic power brush. Most of the Oral B range are not sonic while all of the Sonicare range are Sonic. There is good evidence that both types can assist you in producing a really clean mouth. Happy Brushing! If you need any more assistance I am in the practice on Wednesdays. For further enquiries please contact us at info@marinadentalcare.co.uk

ABSOLUTE LIFE COACHING

CUT THE TIES Move out of your comfort zone and try a new way of life

W

hy not leap in life? What does that mean you may ask yourselves. To leap out of your comfort zone can be both uncharacteristic and frightening, but often energising and inspirational. As life coaches, we consider people generally to be capable of so much more. Many, if not most people, never reach and achieve their true potential in life. When you decide to leap and take a new job, start a new relationship or finish one, or start a new career, or make a decision to downsize, it can be

traumatic and disconcerting. According to many ‘self help manuals’ if you do what you want to do all is rosy and the money will pour in – however the real world isn’t always like that. When making your decision be prepared to be plagued with doubts (we are all human). It takes courage to leave the comfort of the life boat and jump. You may spare yourself a trail of tears by staying put in any given situation, but is that what you really want? Would you prefer to work in a garden centre planting out in the nursery rather than feeling chained to a computer five days a week? Changes in life can bring unbelievably high returns to people; if not financially, then emotionally. You too can be a no risk person or you can take a leap of faith and change your life… it’s up to you. For one to one life coaching contact Georgina or Terrina on 07775513188.

Havana Spoon has several special areas with their own charm. Away from the restaurant there is a relaxing area, with beautiful white leather sofas and that familiar Havana ambience. This leads into a beautiful bar, which itself leads to the outside seating, where you can enjoy a sundowner on the generous turfed area. Back inside there are more delights to be found if you venture downstairs; another glorious bar area, and comfortable seating. This venue has an area for all moods and fancies. Havana Spoon has had much praise and has amassed a great deal of interest since it opened in March. This is not surprising at all, as it truly is the most exciting venue to open in Hove for many a year. In a way, I am glad I live in Shepherds Bush, away from the place. For I know, if I was a Hove resident, I would be in every day for lunch, afternoon tea, and every evening to sample fine dining at its best.

His culinary range is extensive, from healthy southern Mediterranean dishes to spicy North African bites. Javier is equally at home in the kitchen or front of house, and his earliest memories of cooking go back to his childhood, and the long lingering lunches presided over by his maternal grandmother. He can still remember the taste, aromas and delights of these occasions. Javier is now passing on this heritage to his own daughter, Joanna, with whom he shares many delightful ‘cooking’ moments. When Javier first met Pascal Madjoudj, the other owner of Tipaza, they formed an immediate rapport and friendship. At first Javier, under the wing of Pascal, led Pascal’s Brasserie and its team to success. His hard work and commitment

Pascal Madjoudj and Javier Llopis outside Tipaza

paid off, when two years later, together they created Tipaza next to the recently rebranded La Fourchette, Trattoria Pascal. Tipaza, on 104 Western Road, is one of Brighton’s newest and liveliest eating places. Delicious fusion cuisine is cooked on request by Javier and the Tipaza Team. Seating 25 in the intimate downstairs’ restaurant space, or 25 upstairs’ Tipaza can provide delicious and tasty food for all your celebrations. Whether it’s a girls night out, family meal, hen party or corporate event, you will be guaranteed great food and if you want it, entertainment at Tipaza. This part of Western Road, Brighton, is fast becoming Brighton’s new Latin Quarter with the newly opened Trattoria Pascal, featuring Enzo Coppola’s southern Italian cooking. CRICKET, LOVELY CRICKET

Michael Yardy plays for Sussex and England

Tim Parker visits the newly refurbished County Cricket Ground in Hove and discusses the changes in the game

O

n 11th May this year Sussex beat Notts, the Championship holders, at the Hove County Ground; it took just three days out of the four and I was there. It was the first county cricket match I had watched in many years, and I was delighted to meet old friends and sit with some happy and contented spectators. I felt at home and wondered what had kept me away for so long. Some of you may have noticed (below) that I have cribbed just a little of Egbert Moore’s splendid Calypso written after the West Indies won their great test match against England at Lords in 1950. It is a splendid and catchy piece, (so much better than most of the stuff which was on the Eurovision Song Contest recently):

Cricket, lovely Cricket At Lord’s where I saw it, Cricket lovely Cricket At Lord’s where I saw it; Yardley tried his best But Goddard won the test, They gave the crowd plenty fun; Second Test and West Indies won. Chorus: With those two little pals of mine, Ramadhin and Valentine. The 1950 West Indies team was one of the greatest ever assembled. Weeks, Worrall and Walcott were just three of their marvellous batsmen, and supported by two of the world’s most talented spinners, Ramadhin and Valentine. In retrospect it seems that the 1940s and 50s were the high point of post-war cricket, and that in many ways cricket in this country has been in decline ever since. I don’t know how many were in the crowd on Wednesday 11th May to watch such a good match but it must have been 60

less than two thousand, and that was despite the extraordinary athleticism of the players and their desire to entertain. Of course cricket is changing; on another day a Twenty20 match will bring in new followers of our game, and some cash! The ground today On arriving at the Hove ground I was welcomed by a cheerful man at the gate. “I’ll find Mr Bowden,” he said, “but meanwhile make yourself comfortable. We have a good match today.” David Bowden is the director of the County Cricket Club and is chief executive of Sussex Cricket in the Community Trust. Together we walked around the ground. I was impressed. The club has received a makeover; the old County Ground, once shabby and down at heel, gleams with new white paint, a new stand and better facilities for everyone. There are still workmen on site finishing further improvements, but they were unobtrusive and in no way affected people’s experience. Not so long ago there were rumours that the Sussex Club might move their headquarters from Hove, but it now seems that the precious patch of green in the centre of Hove is safe, thankfully. How it all began I guess, like many others, I am concerned about the future of the game, but not many know of its humble beginnings. At the start it was a great gambling game. Wouldn’t it be fun, I thought, if I could place a bet on how many wickets Monty Panesar would take in the afternoon, see him do the business and then go home with my winnings. I floated my idea to Brian Bedson, the Club Chairman. He smiled. “We have inquired,” he told me, “but the bookmakers are not interested.” So will cricket as we know it survive? After my talk with David, a prime mover of much that is good in Sussex cricket, I am confident that it will. “It is so important,” he told me, “that we do everything we can to support local cricket clubs. Our leagues across the County are doing well. But

ABSOLUTE LOCAL HISTORY our main concern about the future is the lack of cricket for young people of school age. That both Conservative and Labour governments have continued to allow the sale of school playing fields is a disgrace. The good news is that the Trust’s efforts to reintroduce cricket to a number of primary schools is proving a success. The response has been marvellous, and it’s given many young boys and girls the opportunity to play which had previously been denied to them. “ He continued: “But in some respects the most exciting of our projects is our grassroots community work which has introduced Street 20 cricket, or Twisted, to some difficult areas. We’ve had a great success in Whitehawk, where in conjunction with the Crew Club we have up to fifty young people playing Street 20 on a regular basis.” There’s sometimes criticism as to how the sport is played nowadays, but are things so very different? In the 1960’s I played a little club cricket at Rottingdean. The sub was a fiver, subsidised by collections from the fleet of cars which used to park on the grassy bank to the south of the ground. We had a fearsome and bad-tempered fast bowler who was in his forties. I remember once when his appeal was dismissed by the umpire he kicked his wicket down and stomped off home. There was some debate as to whether he should be suspended for a few matches but in the end he got away with it. “We can’t suspend him,” our captain, a headmaster, finally decided. “He is our very best bowler and we need him for next week.” There’s no doubt about it: in these recent years the old club has done an extraordinary job for Sussex cricket, and not just in Brighton and Hove. There are match days in Worthing and Arundel, and then there are the new facilities at Blackstone which are run by the Trust and used by the Sussex Youth Squads, Sussex Sharks, Visually Impaired Cricketers, and now Street 20. Well, my playing days are over, but I am resolved to watch more cricket in future. I might join the clergyman who writes his sermon in the deckchairs behind the bowler’s arm. We can exchange notes, and I’ll do some scribbling. And if we sit there long enough maybe we’ll be introduced to Elton John!

Ropetackle spokesman Ben Parker said “this should be a hoot! Gina Yashere is possibly the hottest of hot tips on the UK comedy circuit right now. Her star is rising extremely quickly now she’s based in Los Angeles, so come and catch her while you still can!” Gina Yashere has made a lot of changes in her life of late. She’s travelled the world - from Nigeria to discover her ancestral roots, to Thailand to get her zen on, to Malaysia to... get robbed, to Indonesia to get tattooed, and many other places in between! But she’s ended up in the one place she truly feels at home... Los Angeles. She’s the best and she wants everyone to know it, so she’s gonna keep shouting until you notice her! Sarah Jane Morris Sarah Jane Morris straddles rock, blues, jazz and soul with a goosebump-raising four octave range, that rumbles from the heels of her size eight shoes to the tips of her flame-red mane. Famed for her association with the ‘Communards’ in the mid-80s (the fabulous hit “Don’t leave me this way” is still requested at every party!) and infamous for a banned rendition of the classic ‘Me and Mrs Jones’, Sarah Jane Morris has always attracted as much attention for her politics as for her soul-driven voice. Numerous solo albums later, pop stardom on the continent, and a diverse set of musical collaborations on record, film and stage, Morris continues to steer her unorthodox career to greater heights.
