Whether we like it or not, those Christmas preparations are well underway; from friends telling me their festive plans, to shop owners telling me their expectations, it seems people really are getting ready for a fun (and hopefully profitable) time this year.

While restaurants and bars prepare their festive menus and such, we spoke to a few of the top venues where you can hold a staff, family or friends Christmas gathering. We asked them what they have to offer… I think you’ll agree with me upon reading it when I say that it reminded me once again

ABSOLUTE BUSINESS PROFILE
VINTAGE STYLE
Michelle Terras talks to Absolute Brighton about her shop, Tramp ichelle Terras comes from a family of fashionistas. Her mother was a 60s fashion model and her father a jazz musician and tailor. She grew up with fashion in her blood and has been designing outfits from the age of 12 when her father made her first creation inspired by the movie Grease. Michelle’s fashion career began as a model which took her from Manchester to LA then into the music industry working for indie labels and styling some of the musicians of 90s Britpop. From styling, she expanded into make-up artistry and worked on various fashion shows around the country. Her new venture, vintage boutique Tramp is the culmination of an eclectic and exciting career in the fashion industry.
What prompted you to open a vintage shop in Brighton? I was inspired by old-school screen sirens of the silver screen like Sophia Loren and Elizabeth Taylor who are such icons in fashion and femininity. I wanted to create a space and shopping experience that would inject a bit of glamour into Brighton and into all the ladies that shop with us.
Please describe your business to our readers: Tramp is a classic, high-end boutique, which caters for women of all ages with interests in different eras from 30’s and 40’s to my personal favourites and speciality 70’s and 80’s. At Tramp we’ve tried to create a relaxed and uncluttered shopping experience. All our clothes have been hand selected with current trends in mind.
When buying piece’s for Tramp, what do you look for? Cut, label and style but most importantly whether I like it or not. I look at what’s big on the catwalk and what’s going to be big next season and then I go and find the originals, the looks that are inspiring current designers.
Why did you decide to call your shop Tramp? Tramp is named after the Frank Sinatra Song The Lady Is A Tramp because our ladies are off-beat, don’t follow the crowd and know what they want.
W LA a tr IN PL ip t A o ND
What can customers expect upon visiting your shop? I’ve tried to create an easy, relaxing and elegant
shopping experience. I don’t want my customers to have to rummage around too much. I’ve done all the hard work for them, all they need to do is come in and browse. What trends do you predict for 2011? Next season’s going to be great; bowler hats, pretty peplum dresses with workman boots, boyfriend blazers and tweed waistcoats over dresses. Think Annie Hall. Tiered gypsy skirts too. But not Boho, it’s evolved with influences from Eastern Europe and the American Prairie. And finally, what is the best part about your shop? For me the best part is seeing women look and feel fantastic. For my customers the best part is value for money and being made to feel glamorous and special‌ ‘Diamonds and lace‌ no got? So what? That’s why the lady is a Tramp.’ For details see advert bottom left. *To be eligible for the NSPCC free prize draw just order a Letter from Santa (no donation necessary). When pushed on who springs to mind, Cleese cleverly avoids anyone still living to single out Joan ‘Miss Marple’ Hickson. “Have you ever watched the late great Joan stuck in a ‘loop’ of consciousness relating to who would inherit her late mother’s sherry glasses in ‘Clockwise’ (1985)?” he asks, “for me she was the finest actor in it. Chatting at the launch of Vertu’s new Constellation Quest Smartphone the other evening at Lancaster House, Seal said he feels more comfortable in a suit over casual dress. “I always go straight for a jacket even if I pair it with Jeans,” he said. ABSOLUTE SOCIALITE DIARY
WINTER NIGHTS
PJ, aka Peter Jarrette Brighton’s favourite socialite, finds that social events are thriving as the weather gets colder Dear diary The cosy cable knit days and windy, wool-coated nights are engulfing us in Sussex and leaves must fall. Our trees are becoming barer. However, our social diaries grow as increasingly lush and fat as the seasonal fowl we will soon be preparing. As we bundle up to Hanukkah and Christmas with close family and friends there have been bags more socially wide open events keeping us all hot of heel around the city and its surrounds. There was a wonderful open day at businessman Mike Holland’s developing, educational and historical theme park, The Engineerium. Locals were toured through the many buildings housing just 15% of the working steam driven displays that are being prepared for The Engineerium’s grand opening. Mike’s colleague, John Jolly, made it clear to me as we chatted that more exhibition space is what’s really required in the run up to the park’s opening. Meanwhile, Martin Webb has introduced another clobberingly good restaurant and social venue, The Stoneham; what was once the rough and ready Portland Pub and music venue in Portslade. My wife Karin and I went to a ‘friends only’ soft opening to sample the Italian marvels of The Stoneham’s kitchen and I vaguely recall climbing into a car at the end of a boozy night, with my thumb stuck in a half full bottle of house white. The season started off on one of the last of our warmer days at Stanmer House with TV Vet Marc Abraham’s Pup Aid Music Festival. Friendly, familiar and famous faces turned out to support the raising of awareness of the cruelty of puppy farming. It was there that I met Meg Mathews (AKA Noel Gallagher’s former wife), as we joined each other as judges in one of the many dog show categories. She introduced me to her friend and personal chef, Sean Paul, who I learned was also Sir Paul McCartney’s chef. Last year he worked with Sussex resident Heather Mills on the design and consultancy of her V-Bites Cafe at Hove Lagoons. He spent three months in the city, leaving with fond memories of the nightlife we have to offer. We all met again a week or so later when Meg invited me up to her Primrose Hill home for the day (see page 28). There I met the actress Sarah Barrand, ex-Shannon of Footballer’s Wives. The luscious brunette chatted about her role in the upcoming motion picture ‘The Kid’ by director Nick Moran and her recent appointment as Ambassador for the Well Child Charity. Meg too spoke of her own work on the International Primate Protection League and their ‘Save the Gibbon’ campaign. She’s co-designed a T-shirt with designer Rory Dobner to raises the awareness of the often overlooked gibbon. This T-shirt is adorned with a fashion gibbon decked out in Ray Bans and Chanel accessories. The story goes there is a tribe of these naughty Artful Dodger characters living at the top of London’s Bond Street streetlights that descend on sartorial city shopping fashionistas and swipes their designer gear. Check out more on the gibbons at www.ippl.org. We’ve all been enjoying news of an early Christmas gift haven’t we? Ben Samandi of the easily elegant Havana Restaurant at No. 32 Duke Street, Brighton announces the opening of Spoon at No. 70 Church Road, Hove. Mr. Samandi’s sophisticated style of dining and smooth service it set to bring more charm to our western reaches for the discerning restaurant goer. I promise not to get my thumb stuck in one of their bottles of wine but the Christmas parties are still to come. X

rom Madonna to Gwyneth Paltrow to Uma Thurman and Sarah Jessica Parker, they’ve all been in the press for their hobby to pass time while waiting on film sets or in studios… even tough guy Russell Crowe has been at it. Yes, it seems ‘knitting’ is all the rage once again. And what better time to pick up those needles than when the winter is drawing in and winter woollies are big on high streets and catwalks everywhere. Whether you’re a virgin knitter, a keen knitter or a has-been knitter of past, purchasing some needles and wool with a pattern is not only simple for anyone to do, but is also a great economic move for gaining new woollens in your wardrobe as it is so cheap. Wool retailers have reported that sales have soared as celebrity fans and the recession have encouraged people to get knitting once again. Students are especially being seen in knitting shops more over, as well as parents, including men… So whether you are stressed, trying to save those pennies or just want a new hobby, knitting might be the answer for you. Go buy your tools, and then try this simple beginners pattern below in whatever colour your heart desires (it might even make a great Christmas present for someone!) ABSOLUTE INTERVIEW Character actor, writer, comedian, and now chat show king – is there no end to Rob Brydon’s talents? Danny Masters catches up with Britain’s best
HAVING A LAUGH
loved entertainer You do so many things, would you classify yourself as a comedian, an actor or a comic actor? I don’t think about it too much, so I usually say I’m an actor. You could say I’m a ‘performer’, but I also write. If I say ‘comedian’, I feel under pressure to be funny all the time. I’ll settle on ‘actor’ because ‘performer’ makes you sound like you’re a dog, performing to order. Who are your comedy heroes? Barry Humphries and Peter Cook and Dudley Moore. I remember discovering them as a child and just being blown away. But my all time favourite comedy show has to be The Larry Sanders Show. There’s a great depth to the characters allied to brilliant writing. As a stand-up comedian, what was your worst ever gig? I remember performing at a club called Up the Creek when I was just starting out and as soon as the audience heard my Welsh accent, the whole room started making sheep noises. How did you deal with that? I didn’t! But with experience came confidence so after that, whenever people started making sheep noises I would feign indignation and say “Seriously, please don’t do that.” There’d be an uncomfortable silence before I’d say, “it’s very hard to remember this when I’m aroused.” If you weren’t an actor and comedian, what would be your occupation? I probably would have followed my father and gone into sales. I’ve actually only ever done a normal job for one day and that was a telesales job when I was in my twenties. It was for an environmentally friendly industrial cleaning agents and you were given a script. It was soul-destroying and I felt incredible self-loathing that it had come to this. Before your acting career took off, you worked as a presenter/salesman on the shopping channel. Were you any good? I used to be able to keep the sales patter going so I was actually very good at it. In fact, I was told I was the best. I remember selling lawn mowers, jewellery, bicycles and electronic keyboards. Back then it was relatively well paid. You’re big mates with Brightonian Steve Coogan. When did you first meet him? I’d been a big fan of Steve’s for a while before we met. He seemed to be having the professional life I wanted. I was doing voiceovers and stuff at the time, and I
used to watch him and think: ‘That’s exactly the work I want to do.’ But we first met after he saw a tape of some characters I’d been doing in an improv group with Julia Davis. I bumped into him at a publisher’s and he said he’d seen my tape and liked what I was doing. We hit it off immediately and we ended up doing loads of things together. Your Uncle Bryn character in Gavin & Stacey is one of the most popular in the show. Do you get much attention from fans? A lot of people do shout ‘Bryn’ at me in the street. I think it’s because he’s such a nice character and people warm to him. But then I also get a lot of people calling me ‘Anton’ because they’re forever mistaking me for Strictly Come Dancing’s Anton du Beke. Although can I point out that Anton does have a bigger forehead? But people usually want to talk to me about Bryn. They’ll say, ‘I wish you were my uncle’. Sometimes they even ask for a hug. I asked my wife about it and she said ‘I think it’s because you’re small’. I thought ‘Oh that’s charming’. They’re doing it because they know their arms will reach around the other side of me. And I thought it was because of my sexual dynamism. When you first read the script for Gavin & Stacey, did you know it was going to be such a huge hit? We all knew it was very good and that it was a superior piece of writing, but you can never assume something will automatically be a hit. Hits are very rare and to get a show that takes off the way Gavin & Stacey has, well you’re lucky to get one of those in your career. Most actors are just happy to be working,
so I feel very fortunate. Do you think it’s changed the way people view Wales? I think it’s made Wales much more palatable to a very wide audience. In the past, Welsh sitcoms have never made it onto the national network. But Gavin & Stacey presents a very authentic view of Wales. It shows that there is much more to the country than the lazy stereotype of rugby, sheep, Shirley Bassey and choirs. Is there going to be a Gavin & Stacey special? I don’t know anything about it but the thing is, would it be as good as Gavin & Stacey? When you’ve done something really good, something that catches people’s imagination, there’s a part of you that thinks, ‘Should we just leave it?’ We did three series and a Christmas special, there’s something nice about that. On your panel show, ‘Would I Lie to you?’ which celebrity guests have been the best liars? Fern Britton was very good. And Russell Howard, and Jimmy Carr too. You’re on it every week, you must be a great liar. No, I’m honestly not! I don’t have any special powers in that area. I’m okay at little lies but at big ones I get a bit flustered. I think I’d be rather wary of anybody who says ‘I am a very good liar’. I’m not sure I’d particularly want to know that person. Is it as much fun to make as it looks? It really is. I love working with team captains David Mitchell and Lee Mack, they both make me laugh enormously. I get to sit in between them and just laugh, so what could be better? It’s a kind of old fashioned show in that people get the chance to talk and be funny. It’s not cynical and nasty, it’s more warm-hearted and sharp. Out of all the shows you’ve done, which are you most proud of? I was very proud of The Keith Barret Show, because that involved improvising in character. Marion and Geoff and Human Remains made my name, and I think they stood out at the time. You always seem relentlessly upbeat. Is there anything that gets you down? Anti social behaviour depresses me. Simple things like people dropping litter. And people with a lack of consideration for others. That’s never a laughing matter. The Rob Brydon Show is on BBC2, Friday nights ABSOLUTE

ABSOLUTE INTERVIEW
AT HOME WITH MEG A few years ago you couldn’t open a magazine or newspaper without seeing her face, alongside her then husband Noel Gallagher of Oasis fame, and usually with fellow A-list rock friends including Kate Moss. But over a decade later, what life is Meg Mathews leading now? And what does she do? Peter Jarrette went to meet her at her beautifully designed home in Primrose Hill
T
he first thing that you detect on entering Meg Mathews’ ‘Pop Box’, (her playful name for her slick condominium style Primrose Hill home), is the gentle, sweet scent of French Vanilla candles. Indeed, this A-list rock ‘n’ roll socialite, ex-wife of Oasis’ Noel Gallagher, is all about a welcoming ambience in everything she does. The second and third thing to greet you is the excited Oscar, her Boston terrier, and her more laid back but equally friendly Pug, Pugalicious. Both Meg and I have arrived to ‘Pop Box’ on foot after a short walking tour of Englands Lane, her local high street in London’s upmarket Regents Park area. During our brisk walk, Meg points out various outlets she uses on the street that she knows as well as the back of her hand. “I’m a walkabout kind of person,” she states. Around the leafy enclave every street is snarled with early morning traffic. “I’m embracing being green too.” she says. “I’m actually downsizing from my Toyota 4x4 to a Toyota iQ.” However, she goes on to add, “the 4x4 still will come in handy for trips with Anais (her daughter) back and forth to her country boarding school. There’s also all her sporting equipment to bundle in and out, and her riding gear. She keeps a pony that she’s named Megastar. ” Anais, born in 2000, is Meg’s daughter with Noel and her only child. An adorable blonde girl with a confidently outgoing nature she has just begun boarding school and according to her mum, “she loves it!” Meg Mathews is an interesting contradiction. This is the woman whose little black book is full to bursting with the names of more super famous friends than you can shake a stick at. “I was born in Guernsey, and moved to South Africa with my family when I was eight.” Financially solvent now, she says, “My parents weren’t rich. In fact they economised to make sure I went to good schools but I never excelled academically, due in part to the difficulties in studying brought on by my dyslexia.” She was, however, a firebrand at sports and captained several sports teams, which assured her popularity with her peers and honed her amazing people skills. The contradictions in Meg are more to do with her life than her person. As a person she is consistent. She is friendly, communicative, engaged with the interests of those around her. And of her friends and family
28
she is loyal and supportive. However, the girl with dyslexia returned to the UK, lived in a Brixton squat and eventually, after a series of fashion-related sales jobs, debuted on the major music scene as the manager of 80’s pop star Betty Boo. She laughs as she recalls, “there I was, in little or no time, managing the multi award-winning pop act of the year... and I was tone deaf!” In the years that followed, Meg founded Flavour Music and managed many more acts. She was a guest of honour in 1997 alongside her now ex-husband, and the top UK’s Britpop stars, at the then newly-elected Prime Minister Tony Blair’s Music Industry Reception at No. 10 Downing Street. En route to these giddying heights Meg remembers cementing her relationship with her ex in Brighton where Oasis was gigging. She had joined the tour bus entourage. Having only brought a capsule wardrobe onboard, Noel caught her ironing an already worn shirt. He penned “The Girl with the Dirty Shirt” there and then about her. At 44, Meg is a the self made, moneyed, style-setter who knows everybody, has everything and what she doesn’t have she’ll create herself; like her MM range of must-have wallpapers, and her men’s and ladies scarves range. Today, as we enter her home, Meg is wearing dark Topshop jeans, a black Zara coat, black All Saints boots, a Louis Vuitton scarf and carrying a roomy Alexandra Wang bag. “One or two labels mixed with your everyday High Street do the job nicely,” she assures me. Her chic sunglasses? “A stall in Camden Market!” Her home is buzzing with activity. An actress friend dashes up the spiral staircase. In the kitchen Meg’s chef, Sean Paul, is creating her afternoon and evening meals. A housekeeper is busying herself, the phone is ringing and deliveries arrive at the door. Still, amongst all the commotion there is that welcoming French Vanilla scent, large, sun-filled rooms and on the walls in the dining area and lounge is Meg’s trademark wallpaper. The pattern is a vibrant pink, faux snake skin with a scant hint of metallic that bounces a tropical glow into the rooms. The Meg Mathews range of wall coverings debuted in May 2010 and is exclusive to Liberty of London. She is Liberty’s ‘golden girl’ as she is given unprecedented support by the people that head the design and buying there.

ABSOLUTE INTERVIEW
Of the Meg Mathews today she says easily, “I love life... all of my life.” And of the Meg Mathews of time gone by? “Maybe I loved life too much.” This new design chapter came about in a serendipitous way for Meg. Hello Magazine had done a piece on Meg at home, which showed the wallpaper she had produced privately for herself. “Victoria Beckham clocked the designs”she recalls. “Then one day as I was walking down Bond Street, I received a call on my trusty white Blackberry directly from Posh asking if I would consider decorating one of the Beckham homes in my designs.” She shares and then corrects herself, chuckling, “She actually asked me to ‘please’ come and do her home. I was so flattered.” Since May 2010 Meg has worked in the same way on the homes of TV presenter Myleen Klass, Big Brother UK host and Sussex resident Davina MaCall, fashion designer Julien Macdonald, Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood’s ex-wife Jo Wood and UK Boxing Champion Ricky Hatton. Meg’s lighter-than-air silk scarves bearing Russian nesting doll motifs and rock ‘n’ roll skull motifs, are proving to be equally as popular. “Right now this one is my favourite, colourwise,” Meg claims of the colours of the faux snakeskin wallpaper in her downstairs rooms. “The faint glow of the pink reminds me of that surrounding feeling of wellbeing you get in warmer climes.” In her sumptuous boudoir her bed is populated with plush pillows and cushions and her walls are a soft coral, faux snake skin. In a bathroom there are two life size skulls, side by side, covered in tiny crystals. Anais’ room is like any other young girl’s with bright, playful colours and girlie touches like a mini montage picture shrine to the cast of Twilight. Unlike most little girls, though, she has a big, personalised, hand-signed picture of mum’s friend Madonna, and across from it an even bigger one, personally dedicated to her from the meteorically popular Taylor Swift. Like her mum, Anais certainly knows her way around the A-list set on both sides of the Atlantic. The walls around their home that haven’t had the MM treatment are hung with photo prints, small paintings. Meg stops to caress one large piece. “This one I’m absolutely in love with.” It’s a pop-art composition of a picture of her and Anais given to her by her parents. “It was a Christmas gift and my folks had it produced at Snappy Snaps.”
“Our rock and roll chick is up to her bedroom in Pop Box by 10pm these days...`” Meg Mathews has led a bustling and opulent lifestyle for almost two decades. Her good friendships with super models, music industry giants, film directors, actors, writers, political figures and media greats have given her a rich seam of stories that would easily make exciting reading or in fact a very watchable film. “I’m not ready to publish any sort of memoir, yet,” she says directly when asked of the possibility. “I’m still creating and experiencing. It’s like my MM design company. Suddenly it was there. It’s like a lot of what I do. Nothing is planned. It all just evolves from one experience to another. In the case of MM its direction is open ended. I may take things in yet another direction design wise but who knows. Life’s far too short to try and define things... or do just one thing. I believe it’s alright to sometimes chop and change. Why can’t you try a bit of everything?”
Peter Jarrette and Meg enjoy a copy of Absolute Brighton
Meg has had the times of her younger life travelling the globe with the likes of her friends Kate Moss and co. She’s partied with Naomi Campbell and been a long term guest of the global glitterati. She adores her memories of the warm hospitality of Chris Blackwell’s home in Jamaica at Island Records. She has riotous recollections of island-hopping with Kate and Kate’s ex-partner, actor Johnny Depp. After a three month, rum punch fuelled stay on Mustique where Noel recorded “What’s The Story (Morning Glory)” they hired a private plane on the spur of the moment to fly to any island that sold KFC to satisfy Noel’s craving. They ended up in St. Vincent where she said, “We toured the most amazing botanical gardens I have ever, ever seen.” Meg has criss-crossed the world many times and still does, especially with Anais. ”Fortunately for us both I can manage to do this and it’s my thinking that travel augments her conventional education, ultimately providing her with an overview and a broader understanding of her cultural circumstance and those of other countries.” For Meg, the islands of the Caribbean have always been a favourite on her world routing. From Barbados’ renowned Sandy Lane Hotel to private rentals of some of the region’s most desirable holiday beach homes, Meg, her covergirl girlfriends and their coveted boyfriends have relaxed in them all. “I’ve also made repeat trips to Goldeneye,” she adds in. Goldeneye is yet another exclusive, stylish resort set in Jamaica. Centred on Ian Fleming’s old island home in Oracabessa, just east of Ocho Rios, it is a collection of small private villas. “Work does come first... and” Meg smiles, “we’ve always got Brighton!” Ever since she was a youngster she’s been visiting Sussex; The Downs, the seaside and our city proper. “I’ve raced up and down The Palace Pier in my day! I remember being fascinated by the Booth Museum of stuffed animals in Hove too. I would visit it with my mum and my Auntie Dorothy religiously. I would always ask to go there when I knew we were coming to Brighton. I was enchanted by it... still am in my memories. Anais is a history buff and she’s fascinated with the stories of the Prince Regent and the goings on at the Royal Pavilion.” Meg has friends living nearby in Brighton and naturally she is good mates with Norman Cook and Zoe Ball whom “she loves dearly.” “The thing I love about motoring down to Brighton is that there is always something new to see. A new club or bar like the Merkerba Bar in MyHotel and the wonderful restaurants are growing in numbers too. There’s MetroDeco the 30’s Parisian style cafe in Kemptown and I hear great things of The Connaught Pub and Kitchen, Dyke Tavern and Cote... all of which I plan to hopefully visit soon. I’ve got my copy of Absolute Brighton as my go-to-guide for suggestions!” Much to my surprise, she then adds: “Speaking of which, a friend of mine saw a copy at Ralph Lauren’s HQ in New York... very nice.” At night time in Pop box, when Meg is not required elsewhere in London’s shiny nightlights, she relaxes with the box sets of US shows like Mad Men. On nights when Anais is back from boarding school they cuddle up like best friends and watch movies. Our rock and roll chick is up to her bedroom in Pop Box by 10pm these days where she’ll drift off after another full and productive day with the lingering scent of autumnal bark, smoky musk and Russian leather of a John Galliano candle. Of the Meg Mathews today she says easily, “I love life... all of my life.” And of the Meg Mathews of time gone by? “Maybe I loved life too much.” www. petnet.com

ABSOLUTE GARDENING
Pruning, planning and plotting Compost November is all about compost. Give the whole garden a good tidy up by removing any debris and cutting back all dead foliage and putting it in the compost bin. Remove weeds and dig the beds over. If your compost that has been maturing over the Summer is ready to use then dig some into the soil in preparation for the coming months. You can also make your own leaf mulch by filling biodegradable sacks with leaves then placing them in a part of the garden where they can still get rain. Come the Spring you will have nutritious leaf mould compost.
N
ovember is maintenance month in the garden. Clearing leaves and cutting back dead growth is the order of the day. Leaves can be made into compost and general garden refuse can be cleared away or used in the once-a-year Fireworks Night bonfire. It’s at this time of year that gardeners can do a little ‘plotting’ of their own by planning what they want their garden to look like in the coming seasons. Grow Your Own continues to be a popular choice for many, and allocating space in the growing areas of your garden for vegetables and fruit is a good starting point. Berries Soft fruits such as Blackberries and Blueberries not only look and taste good but are increasingly becoming a favourite first step into the ‘home grown’ arena. Blueberries are easy to grow either in a well-drained border or a suitable container. The important factor with Blueberries is that the soil or compost needs to be acid, and they will also need netting once fruit appears to stop birds from feasting on your crop. It’s also a good idea to have two plants growing reasonably close to each other to ensure good pollination. Blackberries are becoming more popular as there are now varieties with no thorns which makes them easier to tie to supports. They like slightly acid soil and good compost and need sufficient space to grow big enough so that they can be attached to some form of support which will keep the developing flower and fruit off the ground. And, as with Blueberries, netting is needed once the fruit starts to appear. Both these berries freeze well, so you can enjoy them long after the fruit season has gone. The Easy Guide to Fruit & Berries – produced by the Horticultural Trades Association together with the RHS – is essential reading for anyone planning soft fruit planting. You can pick up a copy at your local garden centre.

“Leaves can be made into compost and general garden refuse can be cleared away or used in the once-a-year Fireworks Night bonfire.” It’s also a great month to take stock of your garden and plan how borders, pots and patios will look in the Spring and Summer. It’s also a time when gardeners start thinking about gifts and presents in the run up to Christmas – which is when National Garden Gift Vouchers come into their own.
NATIONAL GARDEN GIFT VOUCHERS

ABSOLUTE INTERIORS
Sizzling HOT! As the days become colder and we spend more time indoors, now is the time to make sure you have a cosy home this winter Radiators Like many things in our fast moving world, there are many options available for radiators these days, from vertical and stainless steel to slimline flat and traditional cast iron ones…choosing a radiator isn’t as easy as it once was. When deciding upon which ones you want in your home or for a specific room, think carefully first about how efficient you need it to be. Is it for an old home that gets cold easily, or is it for a modern home that is already fully insulated and will need a modern look to it? Radiators also come as works of art now too, so if you have a high end modern home, these may be ideal and blend in perfectly to an interior as an added addition of art.
Once you have a clear picture in your mind of what type and style you would like, look at some selections on the web to give you a guide on price, efficiency and look. Fortunately, radiators are easy to come by. So whether you want to go to a high street wholesaler or an independent, they should be able to source exactly what your needs require. Fireplaces Depending on what your home is viable for, an open fireplace always plays as a magnet in drawing people around it, whether on a cold winters evening while watching tv or during a party; there is nothing quite like it. From gas fires to electric fires to Marble fireplaces and stone fireplaces, the options
available are varied, so even if you think your home can not have a fireplace, you may be pleasantly surprised. Call a fireplace specialist in your area and arrange a meeting. They will be able to advise you upon what you can have. Or, if you are thinking of changing an existing fireplace, they can also discuss this with you. Top Tips for heating: 1. Insulate. Installing new loft and wall insulation will reduce the heat lost from your home, and choosing energy efficient heating options can help cut fuel bills hugely per year 2. Underfloor heating. If you are renovating a room or putting a new floor down, now is the time to fit underfloor heating. As well as convenient, underfloor heating is being proved as a necessity in new homes now and adds to the cost when selling a home; therefore, a great investment too 3. Bleed Radiators. If your home has radiators, make sure you or an expert ‘bleeds’ them at the beginning of the cold weather. This will not only make them much more efficient for those cold day and nights, it is also a good maintenance step 4.Timers. At the beginning of the season, check your heaters timer. With clocks changing you may not be heating your home at the most sufficient times for you

ABSOLUTE MAKE UP
SMOKE AWAY!
THE ART OF DARKNESS How to go from bland to glam, in the blink of an eye! There are several takes on the smoky eye this party season, proving that we don’t have to rely on traditional black eye shadow to create the drama. Take inspiration from this autumn/winter catwalk trend, and bathe your eyes in shades of opulence and luxury. Marc Jacobs and Versace chose blues and washes of violet. While Chloé and Ozzie Clark added lashings of gold to their catwalk models creating the ultimate new smoky eye. The emphasis is on a softer more sensual tone this season making the look realistic and achievable, even for the make-up novice. Sparkly shadow isn’t just for teenagers either, this season it is mature, glamorous and totally wearable. Get on-trend with simple, chic and pure sophistication, put a spin on the traditional smoky eye and catch the mood by using golds, plums and rich jewels, midnight blue or burgundy browns with added sparkle. Golds are divine for this time of year and suit everyone, so if you have a party to go to straight after work, then make your eyes pop by adding this season’s new smoky eye, and go from bland to glam in an instant. .
Here’s how: 1. Touch up your complexion but keep your skin looking luminous and then opt for an elegant eye make-up shade. If you are nervous with sparkly colours then keep it to the centre of the lid only, or opt for a satin finish with strong pigment. 2. The trick when applying shimmery eye colours is to apply a good eye make-up primer to clean eyelids first and leave it to dry, this will help to hold the colour all night long. 3. For a really subtle look, use a mid to light shade of eye shadow and take it right up towards your brow bone, then gently wrap the colour around and under the eye. This can be in a powder or a cream formula. Less is more with this one! 4. Apply another layer to build up the colour intensity for a really bold finish. If you want to add more definition then apply an eye liner along the lash line as well.
5. For those that want to go all out, go back to your lids and dip your eye shadow brush into some water and then into the colours and apply over the top of your base shadow for a foil like effect. If you have used a cream eye shadow then press sparkly loose pigment on top, for an intense and iridescent effect. 6. Finish with a swipe of jet black mascara and groomed brows.

ABSOLUTE BEAUTY
Back with a Bang! By Mark Woolley
Leaping into fringe territory If you’re looking to take the leap into fringe territory and are a little apprehensive, know that adding a fringe needn’t be as drastic a change as you may think. It is a great way to update a look without losing any length or getting colour and can actually be quite versatile should you have a change of mind or mood. It can also be introduced fairly inconspicuously should you not want to jump straight in with full-on, wide bangs. Kate Moss It’s really easy to see why fringes are so popular this season – they’re not only flattering for most face shapes but can take years off whilst hiding a multitude of sins! If you look by way of Lily Allen and Alexa Chung, (above right) it’s clear that fringes are back with a bang! The key when introducing a fringe is to make sure it is versatile for you and how you style your hair, which may mean having enough length to secure it back with bobby pins or sweep away to the side – think of the many incarnations Kate Moss (pictured above) has with hers. You can achieve this by getting your fringe cut just below your eyebrows – the length will bring out your eyes and emphasise your cheekbones. The point here is to frame the face, giving the illusion of a balanced, oval face shape. If you’re starting out, try to refrain from short, blunt fringes as it is a very distinctive look so only opt for it if you’re sure it’s what you’re after and want to make a statement. One popular way to ease yourself in gently is to get an asymmetric fringe where an angle is cut into it, meaning it will naturally sweep to one side. It’s a very subtle way of adding depth to your hair and is highly versatile should you want to wear it up or down. Do pay as much care and attention to your fringe as you do the rest of your hair to prevent it from looking limp and lacklustre. Boost volume and add shape by wrapping the fringe around a Denman Head Hugger Brush (£7.66) and blow drying from above. It’s also important to keep it looking healthy and glossy so use Kerastase Bain Mirroir Shampoo (£12.50) and Kerastase Chroma Reflect Conditioner (£18.50) to add a radiant shine to hair as there’s nothing worse than a dull, weathered looking fringe.

LETTER OF THE MONTH I would love to get a fringe but need advice on what would suit my short bob best. Also, having short hair limits styling so do you have any fringe styling tips? A subtle side fringe can add depth and softness to a bob and be conveniently swept to the side. Create a side parting and work a softening serum like L’Oreal Playball Silky Sunrise (£9.80) to hair before sweeping aside to help maintain shape. For an edgy look, a deep side parting with serum applied to the ends of the fringe will give you sharp and perfect rock ‘n’ roll bangs. Alternatively, wide eye-skimming fringes are all the rage at the moment and can actually be a great accompaniment for a bob as brilliantly demonstrated by Katie Holmes. Here, the fringe should also be kept slightly longer at the sides to prevent it from looking too severe or incongruous. This look is a real head turner so make sure that your hair looks the part – nothing less than immaculate will do. Keep a can of L’Oreal Crystal Gloss close (£7.60) close as this handbag-sized spray helps fight frizz and gives your hair an incredible high-shine boost that lasts. Also, try to refrain from cutting your own fringe, your hairdresser should offer free fringe trims should you need it so do take advantage to prevent your fringe from looking like a DIY job. Dreading that party? ★
e have had emails from readers recently asking advice on going to parties; Christmas office parties, which are now looming upon us, that a lot of people actually dread the thought of. The majority of people probably do enjoy and look forward to a party. But, and a big ‘but’, what about the percentage of people who find the mere thought of an office party scary and even threatening? Please read on if this feeling sounds familiar… Some people just seem to walk into a party and confidently enjoy themselves don’t they? You however may feel on the sidelines, possibly only attending to appease the boss or because it’s ‘expected’ by your staff. Alternatively, you may be dreading going to your partner’s staff do. Whatever the reason for your dread of the situation lets move forward and assist you to change your script and kick out self-limiting beliefs today! Please be mindful of the fact “we write our own scripts in life.” First, tell yourself you are going to enjoy the event come what may. Determine how much alcohol (roughly) you intend to drink (if any); many shy people sip away continually from a glass as a comforter. Don’t forget, you can swap to non-alcoholic drinks during the evening, people rarely notice what others are drinking – but soon notice people who are drunk! Walk up to people, including people you don’t know, don’t be deterred by what may appear to be unfriendliness. They may be suffering from nerves too! Introduce yourself if you don’t know them… it’s as easy as that. Try and
remember it’s a bottomless pit the amount of questions you can ask another person about themselves. Most people enjoy talking about themselves and seldom get the opportunity, so go and question away. You may happen to know that the girl/guy who sits at the desk next to you at work has a cat. Ask a question about it. Don’t laugh - it may sound silly and too simple but any subject matter is a conversation starter, even what’s on TV. Show a genuine interest in others. You may find you are actually interested instead of standing apprehensively feeling on the outside of the circle. Join the circle! It can have a life-changing effect on you. Remember, you have the resources to change your script. And this could be the time. Practice visualising yourself at such events, how you dream you can become good at socialising. Be positive. You could also consider having a life coaching session with one of us to discuss this or any other obstacles, in confidence. We’ll help you prepare for the Christmas season with confidence! ABSOLUTE DENTAL
THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARLY November 1st – 30th is mouth cancer month, and Dr Farrokh Sharifzad from Marina Dentalcare, discusses the importance of early detection of the disease
M
outh cancer is the theme of the month being run by Marina Dentalcare and all oral health teams throughout November. Their key focus is for the early detection of the disease under the tagline of ‘if in doubt check it out’. The main aims will be to give information and advice, and increase people’s awareness of mouth cancer. With our mouth we eat and drink what sustains us. With it, we communicate ideas and feelings to the world through speech or a simple smile. It allows us to taste the nuance of a fine wine, the sweetness of a freshly picked berry, or mustard covered hot dog. Love or passion is expressed by it when we kiss a loved one or a child. When cancer affects our mouths, it does more than take away these everyday functions, it too often takes our lives. Through increased public and professional awareness, prevention through lifestyle changes, early detection initiatives, education, improved treatment modalities, and sponsorship of research, we can contribute to the reduction of suffering, permanent physical damage and disfigurement, and death caused by this disease. Oral cancer is the largest group of those cancers which fall into the head and neck cancer category. Common names for it include such things as mouth cancer, tongue cancer, and throat cancer. Oral cancer takes more lives than cancers we routinely hear about, such as cervical, Hodgkin’s lymphoma, skin (malignant melanoma), testicular, and many others. In the efforts to reduce the death rate from cancers, the most significant progress has been made through early detection. Cervical, skin, prostate, and others that lend themselves to simple, opportunistic screenings and exams have all had their death rates reduced through programs promoting early discovery. Regular oral examinations conducted by members of the dental team will have a definite
50
impact on reducing the death rate associated with oral cancer. Dental Team After an informed public that is knowledgeable about the risk factors for oral cancer, the dental community is the first line of defence in early detection of the disease. It is important to realise that a visit to the dentist is no longer about a filling, a crown, or a cleaning, but is actually a matter of life and death. Dental examinations, when properly done and which include a screening for oral cancer, will save lives. Any soreness, discolouration, induration, prominent tissue, irritation, hoarseness, which does not resolve within a two week period on its own, with or without treatment, should be considered suspect and worthy of further examination or referral. Besides a routine visit to the dentist for regular examinations, it is the patient’s responsibility to be aware of changes in their oral environment. When these changes occur, they need to be brought to the attention of a qualified dental professional for examination. Could a toothbrush help? The UK’s leading mouth cancer campaigners have reminded the public to reach for their toothbrush and make that dental appointment as research links gum disease to cancer. The news, published in the American Association for Cancer Research journal ‘Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention’ could prove vital in combating mouth cancer, which kills one person every five hours in the UK. November’s Mouth Cancer Action Month campaign marked the biggest ever campaign against the disease. Welcoming the research, campaign organiser the British Dental Health Foundation has urged people to make sure they look after their oral health to help prevent the disease.
US scientists have found that chronic gum disease may present a high risk for mouth cancer. Chronic gum disease or periodontitis , caused by a build-up of plaque in the mouth and characterised by long standing inflammation of the gums and eventual tooth loss, was linked to mouth cancers in both smokers and non-smokers. The news could provide a clue to the rise in mouth cancers where none of the traditional risk factors - tobacco, excessive alcohol and the human papillomavirus (HPV) - were present. Saliva samples A true breakthrough in cancer research has seen saliva samples identified as a marker for early detection of mouth cancer. New research published this month saw scientists detect signs of mouth cancer by checking saliva. Facts and Figures More than 5,000 people are diagnosed with oral cancer in the UK each year. Around 1,800 die from the disease annually in the UK. There are now more deaths from mouth cancer than cervical cancer or testicular cancer. The 5 year survival rate for sufferers of mouth cancer is 50% . About 70 per cent of mouth cancers are detected at a late stage, reducing chances of survival. Early detection and diagnosis improve survival chances to more than 90%. Early detection and treatment considerably increases survival chances and avoids the most radical and disfiguring surgery and results in a better quality of life for sufferers. Dentists are trained and in the best position to detect the earliest signs of abnormality in the mouth. Contact Marina Dentalcare on 01273 628899 or visit www.marinadentalcare.co.uk

NEWSXTRA 4 DESERTS CHALLENGE FOR LOCAL MAN
News items brought to you by Mo Hunter-Shine mo@absolutemagazine.co.uk
CITY SLIMMERS SHED THEIR BIG BRAS!
R
icky Paugh, of Brighton, is trying to become the third person to ever complete the 4Deserts Challenge in a single calendar year. This challenge is a series of four 250km running races through the hottest, windiest, coldest, and driest places on Earth, which translates to events in the Gobi Desert (China), the Atacama Desert (Chile), the Sahara Desert (Egypt) and Antarctica (which actually is a desert!) In each race competitors are required to carry all of their supplies, including enough food and gear to last for the six-day event. Temperatures reach as high as 54 degrees Celsius during the day in some events and as low as - 40 degrees Celsius in Antarctica. At the time of going to press, Ricky was half way through his year long goal having tackled the Atacama Desert in March and more recently, the Gobi Desert in June. In these last two events, he climbed 200m sand dunes, ran across vast African plains filled with wild Oryx and Springbok, got lost in the middle of the night, scaled 400m canyons and suffered heat stroke. Good luck, Ricky, from all at Absolute Brighton!

Councillor Dee Simson (far right) with the girls and their unwanted bras
S
uper city slimmers have been filling Brighton & Hove City Council’s bra recycling banks with their unwanted underwear. As the slimmers shed pounds and dropped dress sizes, they were delighted to cast off their bigger bras. The women all attend Slimming World weight loss groups in the area, and were encouraged to take part in the council’s bra recycling scheme by Patchem Consultant and Team Developer Mandy Crew. ”When I announced that we would be supporting the council’s bra recycling scheme, I expected a good response,” she said. “But members have exceeded all my expectations bringing in 500 bras in just one month! “It’s great to know that women in other countries will benefit from these bras that my successful slimmers are more than happy to get rid of!” Deputy Council Leader Dee Simson added: “It’s another win-win situation. As these slimmers are losing weight, getting healthier and casting off their old clothes, they are helping others at the same time.” Brighton & Hove City Council launched its bra recycling scheme in the city
last summer, by installing bright pink collection banks across the city. It later expanded the scheme by offering smaller cardboard banks for shops and offices. Every bra donated earns cash for local breast cancer charity The Pink Dolphin Appeal which raises money for The Park Centre for Breast Cancer in Brighton. The council runs the scheme in partnership with national textile recycling company BCR Global. The bras are transported along with other clothing, to developing countries including Africa, Pakistan and Eastern Europe, where they will be repaired (if necessary) and sold on, providing business opportunities as well as affordable clothing.
Bra banks can be found at: • St John’s Place near the Floral Clock in central Hove • King Alfred Leisure Centre • Sainsbury’s West Hove • ASDA car park at Brighton Marina • Chalky Road opposite Portslade Community College • The Drove entrance to Preston Park • Queen’s Park Terrace

ALBION UPDATE Martin Perry, Chief Executive of Brighton & Hove Albion FC, explains the local business benefits from the Amex stadium
A
t a time when most UK construction is at a standstill, it is not surprising that many firms in the Brighton area see the construction of the American Express Community Stadium for Brighton & Hove Albion FC as a lifeline. Throughout the planning process - and particularly at the public enquiry - we promised that the stadium would have a positive effect on the local economy and we’re delivering on that promise. The main contractor for the construction is Buckinghams and we put in their contract that they must use local companies and local labour wherever possible and they are delivering on that by giving local companies work.
Over fifty companies are subcontracted to provide products and services to the stadium, from steelworks to lifts, flooring to asphalt and electrics to dry walling, many of them local. Ascent Lift Services Limited in Portslade is installing lifts in the stadium. Said Daren Roberton from Ascent Lift Services: “It’s quite a big contract for us to get and has had a major impact on our firm, which has been very positive. Obviously it means that little bit more to us because it’s our local stadium and they are going the extra mile, in relation to other stadiums, by installing a lot of lifts which are important for disabled access. We have also recruited additional local labour to assist in the installation.” Drywall Construction UK Ltd in Burgess Hill is providing plastering and suspended ceilings and director Andrew Wilson said: “The new Amex stadium is an absolute godsend, it is a very prestigious job and we are proud to be working on it, as it will be a famous landmark for years to come. It is a fairly large contract for us with the value currently at a quarter of a million pounds - we have just been awarded the suspended ceilings contract and I’m certain that there will be more work for us to do on the project.” Stuart Pierce, Financial Director of Parker Building Supplies Ltd in Uckfield is providing a million pounds worth of blocks and materials and is also leading on the Heritage Stones project, offering fans the opportunity to have engraved paving stones on the main concourse. Stewart Pierce said: “The stadium development is certainly the most prestigious construction project in the area and we were extremely keen to be involved. The company and many of its employees are long term supporters of the Albion, hence our close affinity with the realisation of the dream.” For more information about stadium seat opportunities and sponsorship, contact the 1901 Club team at email: 1901@bhafc.co.uk or tel: 0845 5041901.

to develop and stretch the gluten. Place the dough in a bowl, cover with a clean towel (or cling film) and leave to rise for 20 minutes to 1 hour in a warm place. 3. For the filling: coat the sausages in a little oil then tip them into a frying pan and cook over a medium heat just to colour the outside. Leave to cool. Halve the cherry tomatoes and remove their seeds and juice. Pierce each tomato half with a one or two stalks of thyme and set aside. 4. Preheat the oven to 180C/gas 4. Cut the dough into 20g pieces and roll each one into a 5cm-long rectangle. Place a sausage and thyme-speared tomato at the centre of each dough strip, making sure both poke over the edges. Roll the dough around them like a blanket and press the edges to seal. 5. Place the hot dogs on a lightly floured baking tray and brush the tops lightly with beaten egg. Bake for 20 minutes or until the bread is risen and golden brown. 6. While still hot, drizzle the hot dogs with a little olive oil and serve with selection of mustards and relishes.
Sausage and cranberry: 4 chunky sausages, skins removed 15ml (1tbsp) cranberry sauce 25g (1oz) bean sprouts 1/4 green pepper, deseeded and finely sliced Method 1. Make each of the fillings separately by mixing together all ingredients listed for each. 2. Take the sheets of filo and cut into 4 (this should give you rectangles about 15x20cm) 3. Place one sheet on a board and brush with melted butter, place a further sheet on top and brush again with butter. 4. Place a spoonful of the mixture at the edge in the centre and roll up - pinch the edges to make a cracker shape - continue until you have sufficient crackers for the festive occasion! 5. Place on a baking sheet and brush with a little more melted butter - this will make them crisp and golden 6. Bake in a preheated oven at 190°C/375°F/ gas 5 for about 15 mins until pastry is golden and crisp.

pleasing to eye as well as serving a practical purpose. It attracted artists, becoming the subject of paintings by Turner and Constable, and even inspired a song. The age of steam was beckoning. By 1823 there was already a steamship, the Swift, which called at Brighton, and then the London to Brighton railway followed in 1841. The railway and a craze for seaside holidays with Victorian city-dwellers seeking the health-giving qualities of fresh sea air and salt, put Brighton firmly on the map. By 1866, Brighton had a new pier, this one built by Eugenius Birch, a great architect with a passion for piers. The West Pier, with its theatre, music and amusements, became a classic Brighton attraction. To promenade along the pier was a walk on the sea, an unusual and thrilling experience. Rather curiously, given our perception of ‘prim Victorians’, men were permitted to swim naked from one of the landing stages. It wasn’t just the piers that re-invented Brighton. A key player in Brighton’s history was one Magnus Volk, a visionary and inventor. Volk was the first

“...Queen Victoria... seemingly signed the town’s death warrant, declaring that she didn’t like the place, “not one bit” and that Brighton was “a dirty hole that smelt.” man in Brighton to light his house with electricity, and later he did the same for the Pavilion. In 1888 he even built an electric car. But his enduring legacy was Volk’s Electric Railway, futuristic and almost unimaginable when it appeared in 1883. How could a train run without a steam engine? But run it did and indeed still does. In the summer months you can still ride the electric railway between the Aquarium and Black Rock. In 1896 Volk followed his success with an even more ambitious scheme nicknamed the ‘Daddy Longlegs’, a tramline through the sea. The tracks ran underwater from Banjo Groyne all the way to Rottingdean, with the carriage raised above sea level by 23-foot high legs. The ornate carriage, run by a trained sea captain, was a splendid affair with a saloon and a promenade deck. Daddy Longlegs was a fantastical and interesting enterprise, but sadly not one that could withstand the power of the English Channel seas. At high-tide its speed was reduced to little more than a crawl and it closed in 1901. If you follow Daddy Longlegs’ course to Rottingdean you can still see the stones which carried its rails. There were all kinds of other attractions, many failed but there is no doubt that there was a real spirit of enterprise in Brighton and the town prospered. By the late nineteenth century there was another new pier, the Palace Pier. Three piers being considered too
Beach life in the 1800s
many, permission to build the Palace Pier was given on condition that the contractors disassembled the Chain Pier. Mother Nature saved them the trouble; the Chain Pier was blown down in the great storm of 1896. Some of Brighton’s classic seaside attractions remain. The ghostlike remnant of the West Pier is a sad sight but the Palace Pier continues to pull in the crowds. Volk’s Electric Railway has a whole association of enthusiasts to support it. And this year has seen a real success story with the re-opening of Western Bandstand, the sole survivor of Brighton’s eight bandstands. ‘The Birdcage’, as the bandstand was known in recognition of its intricate latticework, a trademark of its designer Philip Lockwood, was built in 1884 and had been in a sorry state of disrepair for years. But now it’s been restored to its former glory and there’s even a café below it which offers a very decent cup of coffee. Brighton needs to keep that sense of enterprise and invention. With luck the next great attraction in our city will be the Brighton Eye!
