Just as we’ve finished unpacking our suitcases from those hot summer holidays, October rears its head again bringing with it those dark cold evenings, in time for Halloween. But don’t despair. For Accounts: Chris Pugh

as our very own Tim Parker has discovered this month, the ghostly goings-on aren’t just for the younger generations… no, there’s actually some adult fun too. Taking a trip through the cobbled streets and historic houses of our city, Tim has unearthed some quite chilling stories of Brighton and Hove’s past. He met a ghost hunter who takes people on hunts around Brighton who told him the rather eerie story of a nun supposedly haunting the Lanes where she was buried behind a wall.

Head of Accounts/finance: Adam Style

I bet many of us have walked past that spot hundreds of times never realising what apparently went on behind that patch of wall… Read Tim’s ghost stories if you like to be spooked. You’ll see our city in a whole new light. (Page 62) Although it wasn’t a win, the Albion has been feeling victorious since their match against Liverpool

Managing Director: Paul Craig

(end of last month). Maybe it was the confidence that the new stadium gave them, or perhaps it was the wonderful fans cheering them on triumphantly, but they played a magnificent game worth celebrating. Paul Rogers discusses that match and more in his column this month. Meanwhile,

Danny Masters popped over to the opposition and met Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard. (Page 30) Finally, while going to print this month we received some tragic news. Our wonderful and talented fashion photographer Bob (‘Bobby’) Chen passed away suddenly. No passing is ever justifiable, but it seems so especially tragic and sad that such a gentle, kind and hugely talented young man as Bobby has had his life cut short. Many of you will recall his fantastic fashion shoots for us. What makes a great photographer is a creative eye, the ability to work with a team under pressure and imagination. Bobby was gifted with all those abilities in outstanding amounts, and was not only a joy to work with for the creative team and models alike, but also delivered beautiful work time and time again. Our thoughts and prayers are with Bobby’s family at this tragic time and we hope their sorrow gradually eases. Bobby, we dedicate this month’s issue to you… our friend.

The Brighton Belles was formed by Helen Fearne five years ago following a visit to a friend in the US who was determined to greet middle age with verve and humour and founded the Red Hat Society. The Red Hat Society derives its name from a passage from a poem called ‘Warning’ by Jenny Joseph.

“When I am an old woman I shall wear purple with a red hat which doesn’t go…” The story goes that founder Sue Ellen decided to give her friend a vintage red hat and a copy of the poem as a birthday gift. They went to afternoon tea in purple clothes and red hats and were an immediate hit. The word soon spread. Helen Fearne comments: “We now embrace the twilight years and do not dread them. Vain Rooney

Wayne Rooney has been preening in front of the Manchester United dressing room mirror to admire the results of his hair transplant. The striker had hairs from the back of his head replanted at the front, in a process called follicular transfer. He insists, however, that he will not become like his former team mate Ronaldo, who waxes his whole body and even painted his toenails. Wayne said: “For anyone going bald it’s a bit stressful, so I made a decision to get it done.” Aaahh – poor Roo!

ABSOLUTE SOCIALITE DIARY

M

ABSOLUTE COMMENT

What’s going on....?

JOYOUS JAMAICA PJ, aka Peter Jarrette, Brighton’s favourite socialite, with the latest in great new venues, events and happenings

Dear diary “Try to remember, a kind of September, when life was slow and oh, so mellow... ” (originally sung by Harry Belafonte). Well, slow and mellow are distant words today and like the reflective lyrics I just typed, they seem consigned to the warmer memories of musical history. Our hectic and passionate summer has moved on, burnt out and given way to a fast and already frenzied autumn. Portable barbeques have been put into storage and fluid, sunny dreams, long ago made into plans for some are ripening into shape. New clubs, bars and restaurants are poised to colour our social landscapes like the copper, gold and fiery fall reds of October leaves. The rhythm of love too has played out as it always does. A pattern invisible to many who remain unaware of the significance of spring break-ups, summer dalliances and then the right-on-time manoeuvring of new couples committing to and moving in with each other preparing their winter love nests in exciting new shared abodes. Every year for many of the city’s hearts, it’s the same scenario and often like our amassing grey winter clouds there is a silver lining. All change for new directions (until next Easter anyway)! I’ve been exploring new directions myself but not romantic ones, no. Perhaps ‘new’ isn’t the word I search for but words can be elusive. I was a guest on the Phil ‘Goatee’ Jones Show on Brighton’s Radio Reverb not long ago one very, very early Sunday morning to chat about my touring Russia with an act dedicated to Bony M, headed by close working associates of the original line-up. As I mentioned last month, that was an incredible experience for me and in a whole new direction, live performance singing and dancing on stage in front of hundreds of Russians and getting to see new cities, albeit briefly and in a whirlwind fashion. More dates to the north and east away from the UK have followed and I continue to hone my live performances. And now a dance track featuring me and other members of the group is to be flogged around the Russian club circuit and with Bony M held dear to their hearts as ABBA is in other countries, it looks set to reward the many hands at play in this ongoing adventure. Outside of this pop sphere I have continued to network my eager self amongst my more familiar worlds of national and international PR and publishing. My three novel manuscripts have finally made it to top desks in London and New York with one in particular capturing the imaginations of Lord Hornsby, MD of Dynasty Press and his high ranking literary agents in NYC, and now the long process of law, edits and positioning follows. As these powerful men plot on my behalf the added jewel of a considered TV series about the main title, Young and Pretty New York City gestates in their furtive and mighty minds. What demands on my frenetic schedule will this create? Another shaker and mover, Alice Whitney of Creative Nation, London headhunted me to join a core PR team working for Jamaica’s 50th year of independence. This exciting campaign has a two-year remit of events across the whole pan-cultural development of this island, and the tie-in of the other islands, including my own home islands of Trinidad and Tobago (who, too, begin the run-in to their half century of self rule). The middle point will be a season of high-profile performances and exhibits by internationally known entertainers, artists and authors etc to be staged at London’s prestigious V&A Museum during August 2012. This mega event spans many other countries beyond the UK and the Caribbean Basin, as organisations and companies from N. America, and Europe, wade in to celebrate this dynamic region and its strong integration and influence of histories, arts, entertainments and cultures worldwide. My little black book has come in rather handy for this one! So new directions and whole new business relationships seem to enter too as summer is ushered out and we may find ourselves unexpectedly getting cosy with engagingly new and innovative bedfellows. It doesn’t make us easy... it makes us seasoned! PJ www.facebook.com/peter.jarrette www.twitter.com/socialitepete 28

Rebels with a Cause It is strange, but interesting, the way history repeats itself. In the 18th century the underfed and underprivileged in France rose up against a pampered and indifferent monarchy and the French Revolution set the template for French government today. The power of the people has shown itself many times in recent history, and the discontented in many north African countries rose up against the rule of their oppressive leaders, sparking the massive revolution in Libya which is still taking place, with their cowardly former leader in hiding (at the time of writing). The rebels consist of a coalition of opposition forces, including soldiers who support the cause. Libyans living in Britain have even gone over to their home country to fight for freedom. Altogether they have helped to swell the number of brave fighters, risking their lives for a better future. Let’s hope that they get the future they deserve – a democratic government and the right not to have to live in fear. And let’s also hope that Geddafi, the self-styled ‘King of kings of Africa’ eventually gets the punishment he deserves, which in another century and another country would have been Madame Guillotine! World Cup Fever While writing this I am looking forward to the start of the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand. A great event for a great game. By the time you read this I just hope the England team are still in the competition, but whatever the outcome they will have had a great experience and hopefully thrilled us as much as when they won the prestigious cup back in 2003. Johnny Wilkinson, a true gentleman of sport, was the hero of the day, and his fantastic drop kick sparked a new interest in a sport that has always taken second place to football in this country. Over in New Zealand, people eat, sleep and drink the game. To become a member of the national team (the All Blacks) is possibly the highest position a New Zealander can reach! Their passion is best shown in the pre-match haka, displaying their prowess and readiness to take on their opponents – great to watch (see below)! Good luck to them, and to Martin Johnson and our boys.

ALBION UPDATE Paul Rogers, former Albion captain and Head of Commercial Services at the American Express Community Stadium, gives us an update on the latest events and developments at the stadium

T

his season has been the most exciting that I can remember, on and off the field and I’ve hardly had a chance to pause for breath since the Amex Stadium opened. Not only have we had a storming start to the football season, but for the first time in the club’s history, Albion matches have been broadcast live in 3D on Sky’s 3D channel. The first broadcast was of our prestigious Carling Cup game against Liverpool and our match against Leeds United, which was also live on Sky Sports, and was the first ever Championship game to be broadcast in 3D! We were also thrilled to bring on board another fantastic business partner, with Lifestyle Europe signing up for three-year naming rights for one of the stadium’s first class hospitality lounges and a huge banner on the lower tier between the South and West Stands. You can see the chairman and managing director with the Albion team in the picture. awareness among local supporters of the dealership’s latest site in Carden Avenue, which offers a great range of high quality cars, supported by top level service. Peter Isted, their managing director, said “It is exciting to be part of the celebration as the team moves forward in the stunning new Amex stadium. Our dealership in Brighton is still fairly new, so we wanted to demonstrate our dedication and support to the local community. With such a stunning start to the new season, there is a definite buzz around the new stadium and it is exciting to be involved with such a thriving club. We look forward to BHAFC having a fantastic season.” It’s great to have another superb local brand getting right behind the team and we look forward to working with Lifestyle, helping to spread the news about this leading dealership, which offers a great range of quality cars.

Captain’s Challenge

Steven Gerrard receives an honorary fellowship from Liverpool University

Widely regarded as one of the greatest English footballers ever, Steven Gerrard plays for and captains Premier League club Liverpool. Gerrard is best known for his tremendous long-range striking ability and has scored in numerous cup finals, including the 2005 UEFA Champions League Final and the 2006 FA Cup Final. Contemporary Cooking We take a look at the latest technical offerings in kitchen design

Built-In Combi Steam Oven This genius oven allows cooking with steam and without pressure at humidity levels from 0 to 100% and temperatures up to 230 °C, with a core temperature probe. It also gains direct water connection with inlet and outlet for unlimited water supply. The new built-in combi steam oven is 60cm wide with stainless steel or aluminium backed full glass door with panoramic view. Very clever!

Steaming Hot Water Tap Throw away the kettle, for the boiling hot water tap is here. Direct from your tap, this genius addition for a kitchen is not only great for it’s instantaneity, but also for it’s safety; no wires for little ones to pull on. These units combine a boiling water storage unit unobstrusively located beneath the counter top and a compact dispensing font, and are ideal for situations where wall or countertop space is limited. Hot water drawn off at the font is automatically replaced by incoming water which is pre-heated to near boiling point to prevent the temperature of the stored water from being lowered. The immediate availability of hot water is essentially determined by the storage capacity of the water heater which should be large enough to meet any peaks in demand.

Induction Fast, responsive and incredibly safe, induction is taking hob-top cooking by storm, with many professional chefs preferring it to gas. Induction uses magnetic technology, whereby an inductor creates a magnetic field when a pan with suitable iron content is placed on the cooking zone. Those who have tried it rarely look back. There are many reasons why it is the hottest hob trend among kitchen designers, and consumers, today. It can take as few as five seconds for water to begin boiling on an induction hob, and reducing liquids to simmering is just as quick, which makes this a doubly responsive heat source.

Built-In Expresso Coffee Machine Combinability with other appliances of the oven, built-in expresso machines are a must for coffee loving techno fans. With continuous flow heaters there’s no waiting time, just constant brewing temperature whenever you need that caffeine hit. A lot of the newer models also have a clever ‘aroma brewing technology’ for a full aroma giving your home that constant lovely smell of coffee, as well as a ‘personalisation function’ so that you can have your perfect brew at the touch of a single button made just for you and how you like it.

ABSOLUTE HEALTH

GET YOUR OATS! Sheryl Waters tells of the great benefits of oats - one of the most complete foods

A

s we are approaching winter, we are all looking for ways to warm up, especially on those cold mornings. Many people enjoy porridge because it makes them feel toasty warm and full. We also think of oats in relation to sexuality. Sowing our wild oats ensures that we have as much fun in our youth as possible. Oats are actually considered to be one of nature’s most fabulous aphrodisiacs. Oats are a nutritional power food and have many health benefits including decreasing heart disease and diabetes. They are incredibly low in the glycemic index, so weight gain and skyrocketing blood sugar levels are not a worry. This is not your average breakfast cereal. A nourishing grain, oats are also one of the most complete foods on earth. This grain is packed with vitamins and minerals such as silica and other trace elements to help the body build sturdy bones and muscles, maintain joint elasticity and much more. Oatmeal also contains a wide array of antioxidants and is a good source of protein, complex carbohydrates, fats and iron. A perfect food for those with digestive problems, oats are easy to digest, provide abundant energy, and encourage the body’s growth and repair. Oats also contain a greater proportion of protein than any other grain. They house all the B vitamins in great density. Oats are rich in vitamin E and contain fatty acids and vitamin K. Compared with other whole grains, oats also have the highest amounts of calcium, magnesium, zinc, copper and manganese. And this healthy cereal grain has more healthy, soluble fiber than whole wheat, rice or corn. Oats are also an amazing natural beauty enhancer. They soothe and heal the skin, while reducing inflammation. Inflammation is one of the number one causes of premature aging, and while it all starts on the inside, reducing outer inflammation is also necessary for gorgeously radiant skin. Because oats are slightly rough, they are one of nature’s most amazing exfoliates. They soften the skin, making it super duper silky smooth. Oats have

actually been clinically shown to help heal dry, itchy skin. Speaking of dry itchy skin, many people who suffer from eczema say that an oatmeal bath totally sorts them out! They are totally hypoallergenic unlike many of the ingredients that are given to people who have eczema by doctors. Oats can also soothe chicken pox, mosquito bites, and dry skin (caused by excessive central heating, pollution etc.) They soothe mild burns, any type of irritated skin. Here are a few radiance-promoting, totally natural, make-them-yourself oat recipes. Oat and Brown Sugar Scrub: 2 Tbsp. ground oats 2 Tsp. brown sugar 2 Tbsp. avocado 5-6 drops of the beautifying rose essential oil. Mix all ingredients in a bowl until you have a smooth paste. Gently massage onto damp skin, and rinse off with warm water. Increase the dose for a full body super scrub.

Oat and Honey Milk Bath ½ cup rolled oats ¼ cup almond milk (you can buy your own, or simply soak some almonds overnight and blend them up!) 5-6 drops of lavender (to ensure that you truly chill out in your bath!) Whether you are choosing oats to eat for breakfast, to increase sexuality, or to enjoy soft smooth skin, make sure you buy just plain old oats (organic of course). Avoid the ‘just add water’ oats and the already flavoured oats; they contain sugars and do not offer the same benefits. You can always add your own fruit, nuts, seeds. Natural sweeteners such as honey or agave nectar can be used while still enjoying the true benefits. If you really want to splash out, you can find raw oats, as most oats have been heated to keep them from going rancid.

A most successful open day was held recently at Wickwoods Country Club, Hotel and Spa, with over 350 people attending. On the tennis courts over 50 members played in a US style Open Tournament ,organized by head coach Bob Clark, his assistant Karen Goldfinch and renowned special guest coach Jim Rich, direct from Florida USA. Pimms and canapés were served, followed by a mouth-watering carvery and a hog roast. As on every Sunday there was live jazz on the main function terrace from the guest band So Quartet. Dressed as a rather attractive and friendly pirate, personal training instructor Amanda Lucas hosted face-painting and games as well as ensuring there weren’t too many collisions on the giant inflatable slide and assault course. Special thanks to the event’s main sponsors, Carpenter Box Chartered Accountants & Tax Advisors, as well as Nick Rivett Sports and Brighton Audi, who also provided raffle prizes. ABSOLUTE MAKE UP Celebrity make-up artist Jeni Dodson is our independent beauty advisor bringing to you the latest beauty buzz and hot tips straight from the red carpet!

www.jenidodson.com

A statement for the season From natural looks to retro, sultry eyeliner and pitch-perfect red lips, get ready to make a statement this autumn/winter season. Check out these new trends and don’t be afraid to wear daring lipstick shades or dramatic eye make-up. Draw your inspiration from these catwalk looks and give your make-up a wake up call. Whether you go for a classic, timeless look or for something bold and edgier, take a peek at these autumn/winter make-up trends and devote a little time to experiment with some of the exciting glamtastic looks for the new season.

Seven key trends that may just deserve a very special place in your make-up bag this season Natural make-up For autumn/winter 2011, runways were awash with nude, flirty shades such as peach or beige. Radiant, flawless skin was spotted at Dolce & Gabbana and what can be more beautiful than a clean, healthy, fresh-looking skin? You can use nude make-up in order to enhance your natural beauty. Foundation, concealer, a touch of blush on the cheeks, and a sheer nude lipstick are the products you need for a hot natural make-up. Soft blush Oh-so-lovely cheekbones are so hot. For the season ahead, Oscar de la Renta, Marc Jacobs and Versace suggested a nude make-up with naturallooking flush. Think sculpted cheeks for an innocent, baby doll appearance! Use soft candy pink hues and dust some blush onto the apples of the cheeks or even lower as seen at Marc Jacobs. Eyeliner From eyes lined at the outer corners and thin winged lines to spectacular cat eyeliner undoubtedly adds a glossy, sultry flair. Simple and elegant sweeps of black liner were spotted at Marc Jacobs and Stella McCartney, while more jawdropping approaches were seen at D&G and Anna Sui. Changing the eyeliner style is the easiest trick to spice up your look in a classic and timeless way. Metallics Don’t be afraid to try metallics for the eyes and get ready to make a striking impact. Chanel comes with a fearless, sophisticated combination of gray

and black, while Christian Dior shows us how to rock boldly-coloured eyes and vampy lips in the same time. Even though emphasising both lips and eyes is a total no-no, you can actually pull off this look as seen at John Richmond. For daytime, opt for a gold or copper shadow as spotted at Chloe. Orange eyeshadow Orange is a universally flattering shade and it guarantees to draw the spotlight. Step into autumn with a vibrant shade for the lids. Make your eyes stand out by applying an orange eyeshadow seen at Donna Karan and Kenzo, for a soft, warm glow. Team it with subtly red or pink lipstick in order to avoid an overwhelming effect. Thick eyebrows Thin must be a constant trend when it comes to your silhouette, but for your eyebrows thick is the key word. This season, your brows should have a natural aspect as spotted at Alexander Wang, Oscar de la Renta and Jean Paul Gaultier. Get this look using an eyebrow pencil in a colour as close as the natural colour of hair and brows. Bold lips This season, vamp it up with a dramatic lip shade. We’ve seen a parade of glamorous, boldly coloured lips for stunning, wow-factor looks. From oranges and sexy reds to more autumnal shades like burgundy. You’ll definitely turn heads with fabulously daring lips. For the less adventurous you can pick stains instead of lipstick but remember to keep the rest of your make-up minimal.

The BOLD and the Beautiful 1. Dolce & Gabbana Perfect Finish Powder Foundation eliminates the appearance of imperfections and enhances the natural beauty of skin without hiding it. Feather light, the formula glides effortlessly onto skin and can be built up as required. www.harrods.com £34 2.YSL Blush Variation. ABSOLUTE LIFE COACHING

LIFE CHOICES What drives the choices you make in your life? This month, Absolute Lifecoaching suggest how coaching can help you to make the right choices for your future

I

n our work as coaches, we regularly talk to people who struggle with the idea of change. Regardless of how unfulfilled, unhappy or uncomfortable people feel, it seems humans tend to want to hold onto the ‘status quo’. By status quo, we mean those parts of life that feel secure, easy and comfortable. In reality we are constantly facing change whether at work, at home, our friendships and our relationships, and when we face choices we can at times be less than courageous. Some of the biggest choices we make are connected to our work, our homes and our relationships. How much time do we give to the important issues in our lives, along with these choices that we face in all the day-to-day decisions we make? Career choice Who influenced the career we chose? Teachers, parents, peers? Ask yourself to what extent was it our choice? Relationship choice Our closest personal relationships represent possibly the biggest commitment we make. What influenced our choice of partner? Location choice Where and how we live. Life coaching is concerned with the present, and achieving the life

that you desire, creating a compelling future. What tools do we need to create the life we desire? Setting goals is the first step, If your goals seem unclear, or you are not sure which part of your life needs attention and care, a life coach may be the person to help you. Survival kit for Achieving Goals 1. Enthusiasm is the fuel within, the energy that keeps you moving towards your goal. Build a goal that creates a genuine and lasting enthusiasm within you. 2. Self worth is about being comfortable with yourself, revealing the generosity within us all. 3. Courage “You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. ” Eleanor Roosevelt. The goals that we have for our lives fall into four main categories: health, wealth love and peace of mind. If things in your life are not quite as you desire them, perhaps you should consider making changes within yourself, and in doing so you will see miraculous changes. After all, most of our future lies ahead of us… If you are interested in Life Coaching please contact Georgina or Terrina at 079912206483. Terrina11@btinternet.com

ABSOLUTE DENTAL COLUMN

THE INBETWEENERS Sandy Bone, Hygienist at Marina Dentalcare explains the best way to use TePe Interdental Brushes to improve your smile and your oral health

T

ePe Interdental Brushes can be very beneficial to the heath of your mouth and the condition of your teeth. Here are the main points to consider when using them. 1. The golden rule is DON’T PUSH If you notice resistance on the brush when attempting to use the brush in the interdental space, stop and draw the brush back and then try another angle. The resistance you are feeling may not be that the brush is too big (especially if your hygienist has recommended a size to you). It may be that you are encountering the sides of the tooth rather than gliding through the space. Keep trying another angle, but if the brush still does not fit try a smaller size. 2. Your brush should be a snug fit This is so that it touches each side of the triangular shaped interdental space. If it feels very tight, try a size smaller brush. Tepe have now introduced a pack of brushes that contains one of each size. This might be useful to you if you are having difficulty in using your brushes, as it will enable you to find the exact right size for the space that you are having difficulty with. Each interdental gap is unique, so you will almost certainly need several sizes of interdental brush to enable you to do a thorough clean of all interdental spaces. 3. Once through the interdental gap only move the brush horizontally Try to feel the brush on the gum between the teeth and keep the brush on the gum possibly with a little downward pressure, especially if you are trying to improve some inflammation. Only move the brush back and forth a couple of times. Scrubbing is not necessary and will shorten the life of the brush. If you have moved the brush upwards, and it is sticking where the teeth touch each other (called the ‘contact point’) it is a sign that you have not maintained the horizontal approach. Interdental brushes are not like floss - they do not go up and down the side of the tooth; they just clean the area of tooth that is adjacent to the gum as it is here that the inflammation of the gum tissue starts.

4. Put a gentle curve on the brush to clean the back teeth Then only use that brush on the back teeth and use another straight one for the front teeth. Do not bend the brush back again. Continuous bending may lead to a fracture of the wire which could cause injury. 5.You may notice over time that the brush feels less snug in the space This is a sign that you have reduced the swelling of the gum that is part of the inflammatory process. Reducing the swelling means that the inflammation is improving. The interdental brush has not made the gap in between any larger than it was but the swelling may have filled the space.

“Each interdental gap is unique, so you will almost certainly need several sizes of interdental brush to enable you to do a thorough clean of all interdental spaces...” 6. Remember the space in between your teeth is inaccessible to any ordinary toothbrush This is the case even on the largest teeth, although it may not be more than a few millimetres long. Once infection has become established in the interdental space it can spread down the side of the tooth until it reaches the tip of the tooth root. It will take the bone level with it, which is how loose teeth happen. 7. Gum tissue will always respond to care It is never too late to improve a gum condition unless the tooth has already been lost! While your dentist may be able to give you a functioning replacement ‘tooth’ it is better to prevent loose teeth, as treatment cannot replace the lost bone.

8. If you are using a therapeutic gel put it on the gum between the teeth and then use your brush If you are using the right size brush, putting the gel on the brush means that the gel will be removed from the brush before it gets to the deepest part of the interdental space. Toothpaste is unnecessary on an interdental brush. 9.TePe Interdental Brushes are designed to be gentle This means that they are designed to bend before they can penetrate gum tissue. This is why getting the technique right is so important. It is costly and frustrating to keep inappropriately bending the brushes. Ask your hygienist if you are in doubt, or email a question to us. 10. It is universally acknowledged that it is necessary to clean your mouth with a toothbrush every day to maintain health This is also true of the interdental space. Once or twice a week will not get the results that you would like. 11. Not all Interdental brushes have plastic coated wire This is particularly important if you have implants, as without the plastic covering the wire will scratch the implant. It is important not to scratch the implant as this gives small bacteria an extra place to live. 12. When you have used the brush wash it carefully Use your fingers up and down the bristles, then leave to dry in a clean place. 13. Interdental brushes are more effective than floss If they are the correct fit. This is because floss cannot clean a concave hollow in the tooth while interdental brushes can.

I had so many people chatting with me in the streets expressing their excitement of the revival of this well established restaurant. People were joining our Facebook group weeks before the opening to keep up to date with the renovations.” A year on, The Townhouse has a fully equipped function room, with tv, internet and sound system, to accommodate your conference or private party. righton and Hove Albion player Craig Noone had a dream come true recently when he played on the same field as his hero Steven Gerrard. Liverpool born Craig has been a life-long fan of Liverpool FC. Before he got into football himself, he was a roofer, and worked on Gerrard’s house! Now, years later, the Albion were drawn to play Liverpool in the Carling Cup and he was able to realise his dream. Just to make the day complete, he left the field with Gerrard’s shirt, and the Liverpool captain presented him with his Man of the Match award! See Steven Gerrard interview page 30. 50

Ford of Britain celebrated its centenary with a track parade of 100 significant British built Fords. One of the words greatest racing drivers Juan Fangio would have been 100 this year. It was the 75th anniversary of the legendary Spitfire and this was marked by a display each day. The ghosts of

past

The Town Hall

alloween. Trick or treat? Pumpkins with extraordinary faces flickering in the candle light. Apple-bobbing, screams from around the corner and scary stories. Halloween, All Hallows Eve, the night before All Hallows Day; a chance to dress up and party or the night when ghosts walk the earth? I must confess that when it comes to ghosts and the paranormal I am something of a septic, and yet what fun it would be if a flying saucer were to land in the garden. Some would have it that the streets of Brighton are thronged with ghosts, and while I may raise an eyebrow, truth be told, I have a nagging feeling that something might be out there. I remember the time my wife Beth and I were looking for somewhere to live, and we viewed a house the other side of Worthing. We took our dog, Wimpy, and our young son. We rang the doorbell. The door was opened and we were invited inside. Our dog - a friendly one, hairs bristling, could not be moved. Our son burst into tears. The hall, which was as far as I got, was unnaturally cold. We left. We were convinced that there was something wrong, an evil spirit perhaps? While the ‘rational’ majority

62

Tim Parker and Brighton’s spooky past might dismiss the paranormal as nonsense, priests are still called to exorcise troublesome spirits from people’s homes. And what about poltergeists? If they don’t exist how is that inanimate objects move from place to place with no human intervention? Years ago, I was fascinated by a television programme about a garage in Wales where four eminently sensible, middle-aged mechanics made their living. For some reason the garage was subject to poltergeists. The television cameras recorded the mechanics’ tools flying from one part of the workshop to another. An elaborate BBC spoof, like the famous April Fools Day programme depicting farm workers harvesting spaghetti from trees? I simply don’t know. But let’s return to Brighton. In all the years I’ve lived here, I have never seen a ghost, but I used to meet Dennis Hobden, Brighton’s first socialist MP Hobden was a sane, sensible friendly man and an excellent MP. He also believed in fairies. He had no doubt about it; he had seen them. I accepted what he told me. Strangely enough his predecessor as MP for Kemptown was David James, a Conservative. Part of the reason James lost his seat was

that he spent far too much time in Scotland, convinced he would be able to locate the Loch Ness Monster! Then there was Councillor Blackman, once Mayor of Brighton, who often searched for fairies at the bottom of his garden. As for the ghosts of Brighton, many of these seem to congregate around the Lanes. But the proud Town Hall has its darker side too. On 13th March 1844, Chief Constable Henry Solomon was brutally murdered by a man named John Lawrence who had been brought in for questioning. For one fleeting moment Solomon turned his back on the man. In that instant Lawrence took hold of a heavy iron poker from the hearth and dashed Solomon’s brains out. From time to time the spectral figure of a man dressed in dark Victorian attire has been seen in the basement area. Have you ever noticed that bricked-up doorway in Meeting House Lane? In the 12th century a young nun was said to have been walled up and left to die from suffocation by the senior ecclesiastics at St Bartholomew’s Priory, as punishment for running off with a young soldier sent to stand guard against marauding pirates. A terrible story, so maybe

hildren should be happy and successful - in that order. This is the ethos that drives Lancing College Prep which has become one of the most sought after schools in Brighton and Hove. The college takes children from three years of age and gives them a wide ranging educational experience that prepares them for senior education at 13. Children learn so much more if they feel valued, safe and secure and to ensure that happens the school is run on family lines.

B1011_064 Education OCT.indd 1

Set in its own grounds, Lancing College Prep can boast some excellent on-site facilities. Boys and girls are given expert coaching in the major games; hockey, netball, football, rugby, cricket and rounders. There is an adventure playground and an all weather surface on which the children can play during their break times. The whole school faces south towards the sea and offers a wonderful environment for the pupils. Children enjoy challenge and they certainly get plenty of that at Lancing College Prep. Last year they achieved fourteen scholarships from the Year 8 class of 26 girls and boys who were split across two classes. With subject specialists teaching pupils as young as 7 and 8 they are able to offer a wide ranging academic curriculum. All children have an area in which they can excel and at Lancing College Prep that success is celebrated and children grow in the conďŹ dence they gain from doing something well. It doesn’t matter if that success is academic, sporty or in the arts, it is valued in exactly the same way. Lancing College Prep is a great place to spend your formative years and they are very happy to show you round at any time should you wish to see the school for yourself.

The festival runs from 21st October to 6th November, but before it even starts there are loads of workshops and events throughout October. You can take to the stage with everything from belly-dancing workshops with Galit Mersand, a workshop with Mary Collins and Robin Benie in preparation for a period Masked Ball and singing workshops, leading to a performance alongside medieval ensemble Joglaresa. For those who don’t fancy strutting their stuff on the dance floor, there’s sumptuous dance music from antiquity to the 18th century to experience. www.bremf.org.uk

even artists and photographers won commissions to decorate the public areas in the new American Express Community Stadium, after taking part in a competitive process involving Brighton & Hove Albion FC, stadium architects KSS and Brighton & Hove City Council last year. Corridor, a collaborative of artists, designers and photographers including Phil Nutley, Stephen Cummiskey and Pete Webster, was awarded large spaces in the North and East Stands and worked collaboratively with people in Brighton & Hove to create a multimedia display of exciting images which capture the essence of Brighton & Hove Albion FC. The East Stand is a family-friendly area and local children and schools were invited by Corridor to participate in developing its art; and for the North Stand, fans were asked to share their memorabilia to build into artworks which capture the history of the club, linked with a stadium museum. The vast wall spaces of the West Stand concourses are decorated as a gallery, with a changing landscape of contrasting artists’ and photographers’ work telling the story of the stadium construction, including Brighton painter Bonny Cummins, who specialises in dramatic and colourful local architectural images. Other artists include Jon Link from Modern Toss, modern and humorous graphic cartoonists creating crowd scenes; Rob Caddick, known for his dramatic canvases of sportsmen in action; and Malcolm Glover, a documentary photographer who creates huge panoramic images giving the impression of a cinematic experience. The long awaited new home for Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club sits on the edge of the new National Park. With architecture that mirrors the surrounding rolling hills, it marks both a new era for the club and will act as a gateway to Brighton. Summer reflections Brighton-based artists help celebrate the eighth birthday of one of the city’s exciting galleries

A

rt at Five celebrates its eighth anniversary this October with an exhibition by three acclaimed Brighton artists. ‘Summer Reflections’ showcases the recent works of Cecil Rice, Philippa Stanton and Louise Brooks. Each artist takes a differing yet equally engaging approach to unravelling and interpreting our memories of summer. Whether capturing a moment, a mood, a sound or a feeling, each piece in this nostalgic collection is an intimate exploration of the senses, so entwined in our recollection of summer days. Cecil Rice has used the Sussex coastal stretch as a source of much inspiration during the twenty years he has lived and painted in Brighton. Equally influential are his many visits to Venice where he fell in love with the distinctive character of the light that floods the city. Cecil’s Venetian scenes take you to the waterways, bridges and piazzas of this enchanting place, while his depictions of London and Brighton leave you sentimentally drawn to the familiar panoramas. Cecil has exhibited at the Royal Academy, Cork Street, London and at the Institute of Watercolour Painters. Philippa Stanton is a synaesthetic artist , the things she hears, touches, tastes and smells produce a corresponding visual response in colour, texture and shape. It is this response that Philippa puts onto canvas, asking her audience to consider their sensory experience of the world around them. Philippa’s collection for this exhibition draws on her talents as a theatrical actress, allowing her to use the canvas to perform

a sensual journey of summers past. Philippa’s thought provoking work has featured on BBC Horizon and The One Show, and her abilities were further explored through a body of work produced for the Shakespeare Globe Theatre. Louise Brooks creates work that captures the light and shifting character of the coastline. As a Brighton-based artist she is constantly inspired by the ever-changing sea vistas, tidal patterns and unpredictable skies. Louise’s shorelines and landscapes offer scenes for escapism, contemplation and sanctuary, recreating the peaceful haven of holidays past. Her training as a photographer gives her the ability to depict subtleties in light and this has become the very essence of her work on canvas. Louise’s new collection includes the radiance of Swarovski crystals, and a variety of gemstones carefully chosen for their colour and light diffusing qualities, as well as powers to elicit change and rebalancing. “I am very excited to be presenting the work of three hugely talented artists in our new exhibition,” gallery owner Paola Calise comments. “Brighton is fast becoming one of the most renowned places for art and we are proud to be focusing our exhibition on three of the best local artists.”

COULD YOU BE THIS YEAR’S

BRIGHTONIAN OF THE YEAR? ABSOLUTE Brighton is proud to once again be sponsoring the Outstanding Brightonian Award for this year’s BAHBAs at the prestigious Sussex Business Awards. Each year the people of Brighton and Hove vote for the person they think has made the greatest contribution to the city during the previous 12 months and/or who represents the city in a positive light. The first ever award was jointly received by local DJ Norman Cook and Brighton & Hove Albion FC for its work within the Brighton community. Roger Marlowe of Paskins Townhouse was another proud recipient for his work in promoting the Brighton hotel industry. As was entrepreneur, Mike Holland, who restored the magnificent Stanmer House making it an exceptional venue for weddings, parties and conferences. Brighton restaurateur, Sue Addis from Donatellos, stepped up in Norman 2006 to collect her award

for her unceasing local charity work and support of the city’s business community. Donatellos in the Lanes is one of the city’s best known and most admired restaurants and Sue is equally well regarded for her hard work. Most recently Tony Bloom, Chairman of Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club, businessman and property investor, was named Outstanding Brightonian for his outstanding work on the new and much anticipated American Express stadium at Falmer. We want to know who YOU think deserves the next award as Outstanding Brightonian. The people of Brighton are invited to make their own nominations via the web site and the judges will also each offer nominations of their own.

ABSOLUTE BUSINESS Andy Parsons Chartered Architect and Director of Yelo Architects, an exciting architectural practice that believes good design makes a good project.

O

Architectural Culture

ne of my favourite buildings in Brighton is the Brighton Dome Complex. The tiled entrances and staircases are exquisite, as is the main concert hall. However there was always one element that until recently was a disaster (well, two, if you count the bar that sloped away from you). The ticket office, devoid of beauty and containing my pet hates; wood chip wallpaper, artex, inadequate lighting and furniture from an office supplies catalogue. Of course all of this was only normally revealed after a half hour queue in the rain on the pavement.... So back in January when we were invited to enter a design competition to refurbish the Ticket Office, I jumped at the chance. It was clear to us that the place needed gutting and also a solution to the queuing problem. We proposed quite a radical design that involved decanting most of the staff out of the main shop area and into two rooms at the back. This meant that the shop area at the front could be opened up and the sales desks moved further away from the doors, consequently alleviating the queuing issue. We presented our ideas to a specially selected committee and unluckily for the woodchip, we won the competition! Now the hard part started, the budget was tiny, the work extensive, the wish list even larger and we only had a few weeks to build it as the festival season was about to begin. We kept it simple by cleaning away everything I was visually allergic to, and then provided a very elegant room with smooth lines in a simple pallette. Finally, we ‘decorated’ with some key pieces of bespoke furniture. It recently reopened, we were pleased with the result, the client was astounded. One of the first customers, an elderly couple, said they preferred the old ticket office (it must have been the beige woodchip!) Do go and check out the new ticket office as it is a much more pleasant experience. There’s also a Dome Discovery Tour running over the next few months which I would recommend, as the normally unseen parts of the complex are fascinating. At Last! A NEW FORM OF HEATING FROM GERMANY

Simple to install, Powerful, and no more servicing - EVER!

The onslaught of severe cold is a problem faced by central European homes every single year. For 65 years, one German manufacturer has been perfecting heaters that tackle all the factors we worry about in Britain. Total control and low input radiators allow us to regulate our heating and reduce fuel costs by up to 40%. For years, this country has focused on wet central heating with its constant servicing and replacement parts. The high maintenance costs, as well as rising energy costs, means that now is the time to look at Sunflow’s quality German heating which comes with a 12 year guarantee and needs no servicing ever! All over Europe more people are choosing to heat their homes and offices with this very special form of electric heating in preference to oil gas or E7. In our area, more and more of our customers are making that same decision and when you see this incredible heating for yourself you could be next!

Although relatively new in the U.K. these low input electric heaters have been used in Germany and Austria for a very long time. Being able to control individual rooms means you can put the heat exactly where you need it. Our heaters are slim, quality built and are available in a range of over 200 colours. Requiring no special wiring (they simply plug in), you can use them with existing heating or as a complete solution. Whether you have a cold spot, cold rooms or a cold house - it is time to look at Sunflow for the warm and cosy way to reduce energy use in your home. Sunflow Ltd. offer a complete solution which can include disposing of your old central heating system, even oil tanks! Discover for yourself this incredible German heating.
