ABSOLUTE SOCIALITE DIARY STARRY STARRY NIGHTS PJ, aka Peter Jarrette Brighton’s favourite socialite, on summer in the city Dear diary The summer here has undoubtedly been a good and very welcome one. Brighton has shone brightly for us, day and night. Even glowing Hollywood types have been busying themselves in and around the city as one of the world’s best known A List directors (I cannot say more than this), films his latest blockbuster just a stone’s throw away from all our fine, south coast homes and gardens. We shall all learn of whom I hint very soon, I promise. My source (you’re nobody without one) whispers to me of hard demands and raised voices on the set. In one story from a make-up person on this closed set it was a matter of “Hair today-gone tomorrow...no! Grow it back! The director in question is a wellknown perfectionist. During one starry, starry night my party joined in birthday celebrations for the photographer Sam Eddison and his well connected set of friends at Brighton’s Komedia. The birthday man lavished his guests at the private soiree with a stage full of the city’s top entertainers. We were treated to a gyrating Elvis and the song styling of screen gem Marilyn Monroe in the form of Laura Nixon, the UK’s leading and most consummate impersonator of the tinsletown tinderbox and as it happens, Mr. Eddison’s girlfriend. Sam pulled out all the stops on that starry night and we had one of the best evenings of the entire summer. Cheers Sam! Sara Mulheron who once owned the popular Sejuice juice bar on Gardner Street (now sold) hosted a more intimate birthday drinks get together at Atlas Lounge on a warm evening under a fat moon as we all made merry. Although a smaller affair than Sam’s, it was no less energetic and at least one of our party, a stewardess friend, had to be poured glamorously into a taxi and escorted home! Daytime delights have been many too. Our streets, bars and boutiques have never been fuller as tens of thousands of UK day trippers and foreign tourists crowded our pavements and poured out onto our long and glorious beachfront. For many of us, our late nights have robbed us of early morning swims and midday sunning at water’s edge but I certainly enjoyed strolls to my favourite shops and galleries under the promenade. My wife Karin and I dropped in to the lush treasure chest of art, books and trinkets, that is Castor and Pollock, to stock up on their amusing greeting cards and to peruse their well stocked shelves of art books on all manner of subjects from Miami architecture to 1980’s NYC Club Kids. Fun in the open air also was afforded citizens at the first ever Norfolk Square Community Festival. A fund raising festival to help keep this charming Regency Square green and safe that was conceived and headed-up by the Reggie Vincent and the committee at EBRA (East Brunswick Resident’s Association). The fortunes of Norfolk Square were turned around when it was smartened up five or so years ago by the works and initiative of local resident Reggie Vincent and a small band of concerned Norfolk Square home owners. These folk in turn brought the Square’s plight at the time to local and national attention. Tony Blair famously visited Norfolk Square to see firsthand the good works that had been achieved in its honour. Local residents and neighbouring businesses, as well as Mayor Cllr. Geoff Wells, threw in their might to give us all just a little something more for the city to celebrate. London band Panning For Gold closed celebrations as they captivated festival goers with their energetic hip pop performance. So now, about the A List director... if you are curious as to who he may be; “phone home. PJ www.twitter.com/socialitepete www.facebook.com/peter.jarrette

PARKING NIGHTMARE
I am writing to vent my frustration regarding the parking fees and meters in Brighton. As a regular driver in Brighton I have numerous times had to incur costs to park, where it offers you a ridiculos option of £50p for 30mins or £1.50 for 2 hours. This is a waste of money if I am attending a meeting which is probably 1 hour long, but I have to pay for the extra hour. Does anyone else agree? My second groan is about parking meters not giving you change. If you have to park in a residential area that is metered (by the cricket grounds in Hove, for example), there are no shops nearby to pop in and ask for change, so the council must be making a fortune from these meters not giving change. It is a clever and unfair money-making scheme. In a world where debit cards and notes are at the forefront, these machines should be adapted to give change. That is the case in other towns where I have had to park. I know some may say that you don’t have to drive, but I live too far away to not drive! Gill, Seaford

M
artin Clunes is a well-established actor associated with many British television series. His excellent performance in ITV’s production of Goodbye Mr Chips in 2002 I rate as one of his best roles to date. It still bought tears to my eyes like the original film starring the late Robert Donat (a very hard act to follow.) In speaking to Martin about his new television series and visiting Sussex he comes across as a well-mannered, relaxed person interested in what others do and somewhat reserved in talking about himself. The son and second child of the classical actor Alec Clunes, his mother Daphne was a board member of the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. It was the late actor Jeremy Brett, who played Sherlock Holmes in ITV’s longrunning Sherlock Holmes series who encouraged Martin in his acting career. Married to Philippa Braithwaite, Martin and his wife have a daughter Emily and reside in rural Dorset where they live an idyllic lifestyle within the local community, supporting many local
24
events. Philippa produces the very successful series Doc Martin, filmed in Cornwall; a fourth run is due to go into production in 2011. “This year I intend to relax a little and spend time at home with my family,” says Martin talking to me at his home, “...having just travelled around the globe making my new series ‘Horsepower.’ ” Horsepower is clearly a project Mr Clunes is proud of: “The series on ITV was Philippa’s and my idea. It will be in two parts. The success of the one we did originally on dogs really encouraged us to go down this avenue again. This new series on horses took Martin and his team across the world giving him a chance to visit areas and countries he hadn’t before. “From the remotest regions of Mongolia to the deserts of Arabia and onto American and Europe,” he said. “We went far. The idea was to show how the many species of horses evolved and how man and horse became partners. Our own equine involvement also helped us make the decision to do the series. I have a Hanoverian cross Hunter called Chester, Philippa has a thoroughbred mare
who is due to foal soon and my daughter has a Palomino Welsh Arabian pony, along with four miniature Shetlands.” It soon becomes clear as to why Martin needs to relax and take some time out back in the UK, as his schedule for the series was very demanding. He discovered what life was like in the saddle for cowboys out west with a hands-on approach, while in another episode he rode into battle in a suit of armour at Warwick Castle. ABSOLUTE INTERVIEW “Sussex is also one of my favourite counties and I am really looking forward to visiting Hickstead, which I have heard so much about...” This year will be another first for Martin as he will be President of The Longines Royal International Horse Show at Sussex’s very own Hickstead. “It is my first visit and one we as a family are really looking forward to. I was chuffed to bits when they asked me as no one has ever asked me to be President of anything!” he said with a chuckle, reminiscent of his Men Behaving Badly role, “Sussex is also one of my favourite counties and I am really looking forward to visiting Hickstead, which I have heard so much about, and hopefully meeting many of the people involved. “The Horsepower series will, I am sure, attract a lot of interest in Sussex which has a very large population of our equine friends with some top international racing stables, riding schools, race courses and stud farms,” he said. When it comes to getting parts in productions, actors will always say yes to any question relating to have they done it before. Involvement with horses is one of those that often rears its head” “When you film with a horse they always bring another equine companion with it to keep it calm.” Martin says, “As is often the case, the sounds involved in running a film cause the horse to get excited and George, the companion of the horse I was sitting on in one of the episodes, slightly moved out of sight which resulted in my horse bucking. Several seconds later, I was standing by him upright!” Forever busy with work, Martin is due to be on our screens in another of his famous roles soon: “I have just finished doing another series of Reggie Perrin in London which has been fun to make. The first series went down very goodbye Mr Chips. Picture courtesy of ITV

well, and to follow an actor of the calibre of the late Leonard Rossiter was again a great honour. There are times when some series work and some don’t. I have been very fortunate in what I have done in the past that I have had the opportunity to work with some excellent actors and good production companies. I am of course very selective in what I do. The Doc Martin series was an ideal opportunity, where the location was right, the stories were right and the subject matter appealed to the viewer. It is not easy to follow on with one series after another, and that is why we leave a gap between productions,” he said with interest. But away from acting, Martin and his family are constantly busy on their farm. “In Dorset, my 10year-old daughter Emily gets involved with ‘Riding for the Disabled’ each week, and once a year at the farm we hold a dog and pony show which is always great fun and raises funds for local charities. It means a lot to us to be involved in the local community.” It is also clearly important that Martin’s wife Philippa plays a pivotal role by his side throughout his career: “Philippa, as I mentioned earlier, runs a production company called Buffalo Pictures with myself, which is ideal giving us the opportunity to work together. We produced the Dog and the Island series together. She is very much involved in the Doc Martin production too. The bonus is that we can have a lot of control in what we do and how it is done and that is very important to us both.” A change in direction for Martin has been to diversify into making documentaries. And he clearly has the right temperament to do that. He comes across in the documentaries as passionate in what he does, asking the right questions in a relaxed and friendly manner which makes the viewing a lot easier. When he visits Sussex this summer it will give his fans down here an opportunity to meet this wellknown actor, but also realise that there is another side to him; that is of his love and understanding of animals, and the people that care for them. His series on the ‘Islands of the UK’ also showed us just how he is able to connect with people in a sensitive way whilst at the same time getting them to talk to him in a way that we, the viewer, can understand. The many years he has been involved in acting has helped him with this and I for one feel that he has found an additional vacation in presenting documentaries. Carry on the good work, Martin!

he kitchen is the number one improvement that prospective buyers look for, and the one room that makes your home yours. So designing your perfect kitchen with the means and budget available to you, is important. Choosing the right units is a balance between what’s going to work in your room, what captures the latest trend, what will appeal to future buyers and what you like. Keep thoughts of resale at the back of your mind, as anything too personal or cutting edge may deter future buyers. If you want to add your own bold, individual touches, use wall paint and accessories that are easy to change. Individuality is still bang on trend, so if you have an idea that you think is too out there, be brave and bold and go for it. Rather than a specific colour, a mixture of colours that makes a scheme unique to the homeowner is prevalent. Also, it’s popular to use different paint colours on the same kitchen, with a focus piece in wood or stone. Using darker floor cupboards and paler doors for wall units will help open out a room and add contemporary detail. Dark wood is great for creating maximum impact in large rooms or knocked-through spaces. Gloss finishes are all the rage too, and reflective surfaces are great for maximising the light, but children’s sticky finger marks can be a problem. Coloured units are readily available. High street suppliers offer a limited range of colours, so if you have a very specific shade in mind, try a supplier who has hundreds to choose from. When it comes to construction materials, coloured and high-gloss options tend to be laminated board or MDF, while the wood options will either be veneered or solid wood. High style is now affordable. Ikea is offering ultra-modern and inexpensive designs, such as Abstrakt in glossy red or sleek brown Hallarum. Tiko from Magnet’s contemporary range combines a dark wenge-coloured look with recessed handles; key trends in kitchens right now. Italian and German homeowners love this look, so manufacturers such as Comprex, Poggenpohl and Rational have it honed to a T.

f you like the idea of a traditional bespoke kitchen, Clive Christian offers classic style combined with all the modern conveniences you could wish for. Their philosophy is to create rooms that are both timeless and luxurious, inspired by periods of great British architecture and paired with the finest in manufacture and current technology. For many people considering a new kitchen the top priorities are a space that combines stunning looks with hard working technology. Many of the appliances in today’s market can be fully integrated within the cabinets, creating a highly functional kitchen without compromising the room’s character and charm. The kitchen has become the focal point for gatherings of family and friends, which means that creating a space suitable for both cooking and entertaining is a vital element of the design process. Key to this sociability is the kitchen island, a multi functional central workstation where you can prepare and cook without having to turn your back on the room. With a worktop overhang for seating on the opposite side of the island, family or guests can pull up a bar stool, ensuring the chef isn’t left out of the party. Time saving technology is a great help for the busy cook, especially when you are catering for lots of people. From built in coffee machines that grind your beans fresh for each cup, temperature controlled wine storage and steam ovens through to energy saving boiling water taps and discreetly concealed sound systems. Well known for their trademark manor house look, in recent years Clive Christian has extended their portfolio with a contemporary range of furniture. The construction is traditional but the lines are sleeker and the chrome handles are unquestionably modern. After more than 20 years in the business, Andrew Mitchell of Clive

T
he kids are back at school, and wearing winter uniform, and for them another academic year has started. For the gardener it’s also ‘back to school’ in a way. September is a great planning month – a time to reflect on any gardening successes and to think about what to do in the coming year. It’s always a good idea to draw up a long-term garden plan. You can only achieve so much in the garden if you go at it piecemeal, with no overall plan. It is far better to design in long-term goals. You can call in professional help or do it yourself, but whichever route you choose, an accurate assessment is an important starting point. Also, don’t let your current budget restrain your wish list – phasing your progress is often far more satisfying than doing it all in one go. Have a think about colour and make it a key element of your garden design …amazingly 76% of people don’t think about the colours they are planting, according to the Colour Me, Colour My Garden Plant4Life Look Book. However, a massive 80% admit that their moods are positively affected when surrounded by colourful plants. Colour can liven up any outdoor space and create atmosphere. Planting hot colours creates an exciting and intense mood, whilst opting to plant cooler colours can radiate feelings of restfulness and calm. Whether you just have a simple window box, courtyard or lawn garden there are colour options and shades for everyone. Keeping colour in borders for as long as possible is top of the ‘to do’ list for September, so you may like to consider incorporating late Summer or Autumn flowering plants such as dusky red or purple Sedum into next year’s planting plan. With a reputation for producing a really attractive display in the garden during the Autumn, the starry nectar-rich flowers of Sedums are very
“...planting Sedums also acts as an eco-friendly pest control, they are undemanding and very easy to grow.”
34
popular with butterflies and hoverflies – the latter being important predators of greenfly, so planting Sedums also acts as an eco-friendly pest control. Sedums are undemanding and very easy to grow. Their fleshy leaves store water and they do well in drought conditions, making them an ideal choice for sunny positions in well-drained soil. In addition to being a great time for garden planning, September is the best month to create or patch a lawn using turf. It will establish very quickly, but keep an eye on it during the winter and firm down any areas that may have been lifted by frosts. You can also sow grass seed now for a new lawn or patch a worn area. Divide the area into yard wide strips or squares as a guide to sowing, and lightly rake them into the surface. From September to October plant as many daffodil and crocus bulbs as you can get into the ground. Your efforts will be well rewarded with a great show in Spring and once planted you need do nothing else to them. A bulb planter is an essential tool for planting large quantities of bulbs in grass (and helps stop planting backache). Simply insert it into the ground, lift out the clod of earth, pop your bulb into the hole, then replace the soil. If you’ve got some National Garden Gift Vouchers get down to your local garden centre or nursery and see if they’ve got this great garden gadget and you can then get planting!

onstruction of the stadium (now being called ‘the Amex’ for short) commenced in December 2008 and we remain on track for completion at the end of May 2011, ready for the start of the 2011/12 Football League Season. The structural steelwork to the roof is now complete. The second arch was recently fitted into position which was a major benchmark for the project - the main section of the arch is 130 tons and the span of the arch is 160 metres. Construction is still right on program, with £250K being spent per day at the moment.
‘Fit out’ contractors for the internal finishings have been appointed. Jaysam have carried out extensive ‘fit out’ work for Harrods – and with this amount of experience, we expect the quality of the workmanship to be second to none. The 1901 Club – our premium match day hospitality package - is proving to be the hottest ticket in town and we only have a few hundred premium seats left to sell! We have enjoyed visits from a variety of local business clubs, including Cadia and the Brighton & Hove Chamber of Commerce, many of whose members have signed up there and then. We recently signed up our 500th business member with Simon Konecki from Life Pure Water Ltd, the Brighton-based ethical bottled water company, and have sold 1700 premier match day seats to leaders of the top businesses in Sussex, who recognise the huge value that the new business networking and corporate facilities offered at ‘the Amex’ will bring. We thoroughly researched other clubs, including Hull and Cardiff City and spoke to over 5,000 local businesses to get the model and price right, but we never expected these packages to sell quite this fast! Anyone who hasn’t yet signed up can contact the 1901 Club team on 0845 5041901 or email 1901@bhafc.co.uk. Our members tend to buy two or more, so that they can bring their family, friends or customers on different occasions and many have teamed up with other businesses or friends, so that they have a group of seats which they can take it in turns using to bring guests. Most of all at this time, we want to thank the local community for their support; everyone is putting something into this community stadium and we couldn’t do it without them.

re some people just born lucky? Are you one of them? Or are you someone who thinks it always happens to someone else? The question has been asked for decades, why is it that some people appear to have ‘blessed’ lives, or they can make things happen more quickly, more easily. Yes, they say, they are lucky. In the book, The Secret it describes a secret that has been spoken of through the generations, in literature and in religion. It is known as the Power of Attraction, a force we understand in physics that can also be applied to all other living things... including us. All living things can attract other things - thoughts are things and fall under the same laws of attraction... whatever you think about. Just imagine that. The best part is that we can deliberately cause ourselves to consistently think about what we want until it becomes unconscious and automatic. That’s not to say that we spend our time hankering after things constantly, but it is about systematically and consciously choosing our lives and combining this with belief, purpose and emotion so we begin to move towards it. Try this: Ask yourself for a moment, what are some of the things you currently spend the most thought on? If it’s questions like; why do they have it and I don’t? or; why do I have to work so hard and not get results? or; why is life so much easier for others? You should instead start asking: How? How do I want it to be? How can I enjoy life now? How do I want it to be right now? Over the next few months we will be writing about how to master attraction and manifest the life you want to achieve. Step one is this: Write a description of your desire or outcome. This is crucial. As you write you will begin to make it real, clarifying it in your mind and making it physical. As you write use as many emotionallycharged words as you can; write, see and feel, be as open as you can. Once written, keep it safe and next month we’ll add the next steps needed as you move towards the life you are choosing. Good luck! Call Georgina or Terrina on 07912 206483. ABSOLUTE DENTAL
YOUR BIG DAY SMILE Dr Farrokh Sharifzad from Marina Dentalcare, explains how to get the best confidence-boster you can for your wedding day - the perfect white smile
N
othing is more stunning than a beautiful bride in a beautiful dress with a beautiful smile. If you are getting married, what better way to prepare for your big day than having your teeth whitened? Remember… those photos will last forever. For your wedding day, you want to look the best you can look. Although the bride’s gown will be the focal point, and the groom’s tuxedo checked, the two things that will get the most attention are the eyes and the teeth. For the eyes, you want to be sure you get plenty of rest prior to the wedding so they will be bright and cheery. However, for the teeth, you need to plan further out to ensure you have a beautiful, white smile. Even if you already have a beautiful smile, you can never have teeth that are too white. Just imagine standing in front of all your family members and friends with the biggest and brightest smile. Not only will you look amazing, but you will feel much more confident. The good news is that achieving the white smile that you want is not hard, nor is it expensive. The best way is to have your teeth cleaned, but also a more expensive option is by having your dentist perform laser whitening. With this option, you will generally see anywhere from six to eight shades whiter. Now keep in mind that with laser whitening, the first few days will show a significant improvement but the final results will take one to two weeks to achieve. Although this second option is more expensive and takes a little more planning and time, the results are excellent. This way, when you face everyone on the day of your wedding, you can smile with 100% confidence.
To make sure your smile will look as beautiful as you are on your wedding day, schedule a complementary consultation with us. The ultimate accessory that you and your bridal party can bring to the wedding is a pearly white smile. Don’t be one of the millions of people who did everything for their wedding day, like buying flowers, renting tuxes and gowns, getting a photographer, but in the end regretting not getting a beautiful smile. Your wedding photos will reflect your smile which everyone will remember.
“If you choose trays or strips, do a touch-up the night before your big day. Your teeth are always the whitest if you apply the trays the night before, and the morning of your occasion.” Here are the top tips every bride or groom needs to know about a beautiful smile for their wedding day: 1: One of the easiest things you can do to improve your smile is to have a regular check-up and cleaning every six months or more if needed. 2: A perfect smile can be ruined by gum disease, which causes red, swollen and puffy gums. A thorough cleaning and polishing at least two weeks before your wedding can ensure healthy gums and fresh breath for your big day. 3: Daily brushing and flossing will keep your gums
healthy. Dental check-ups may reveal any decay or worn fillings in the front teeth, which can cause brown spots or stains. 4: Whitening is a must for anyone who wants a quick, painless, bright beautiful smile, unless your teeth have crowns or veneers already. If you decide to whiten your teeth make sure to avoid staining foods like tea, coffee, red wine and berries, so your teeth will stay their brightest. If you choose trays or strips, do a touch-up the night before your big day. Your teeth are always the whitest if you apply the trays the night before, and the morning of your occasion. 5: Last minute tooth contouring allows cosmetic dentists to correct minor defects in the shape and appearance of a tooth, through a process referred to as tooth contouring or tooth reshaping. 6: For the wedding day, prepare a bridal dentalemergency kit: Bring along some Vaseline to put inside your upper lip. This will limit the dryness of your lips that comes from showing your beautiful smile to your guest and cameras. It will also help to prevent your lipstick from getting on your teeth. Have a travel toothbrush with toothpaste and travel size container of mouthwash to neutralise bad breath odours instead of masking them. To make sure your smile will look as beautiful as you are on your wedding day, schedule a limited time free consultation with Marina Dentalcare and see how a perfect smile can make your wedding day perfect too. IT’S A MAN THING! Gentlemen do it too! It’s not only male celebrities, actors, and politicians that sit in a make-up chair before making a public appearance. More and more men today are not shy about being fashionable, styling their hair, whitening their teeth, plucking their eyebrows, or even wearing makeup. It’s no surprise that with modern society’s emphasis on youth, perfection, and physical attraction, women aren’t the only ones who want to accentuate their best facial features and hide blemishes or imperfections. A few of the most common issues that men have with their skin are the occasional breakouts, dark circles under the eyes and as men have almost 20% thicker and oilier skin than women, most find that shine is a problem too. A combination of hectic schedules, jet lag and constant partying all add to the problems of eye bags and breakouts leaving a lot of men wanting a simple solution. If you are aiming for a flawless, au naturel complexion, follow Metrosexual ‘style icons’ such as David Beckham and Robbie Williams and stick to the basics. With a quick brush of bronzer, a dab of under-eye concealer and a sweep of anti-shine powder - you really can look younger and healthier, achieving instant results, whilst boosting your confidence.

Essential steps for the modern man 1. Exfoliate. Exfoliating your skin is essential for ridding the surface of dead skin cells and helps to even out the skin tone whilst brightening the complexion. Scrub your face using an exfoliator with a little warm water, rub your face very gently in a circular motion, rinse with warm water and pat dry with a clean towel. 2. Moisturise. Choose a moisturiser that is appropriate for your skin type, one with added sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher. You can also purchase mattifying moisturises which help to control shine as well. Apply to your face and neck and allow the moisturiser to absorb into your skin before proceeding to the next step. 3. Apply Concealer. Choose a shade that matches your complexion, mix a little bit of concealer on the back of your hand. Using a finger gently dab it onto the centre of a blemish and lightly blend to the outer
edge patting in a gentle circular motion, then blend the concealer outward into the skin. Do not rub! 4. Anti shine powder. This comes in two forms, loose powder and pressed powder. loose powder will appear lighter and pressed powder will generally give more coverage. Dust it lightly over your forehead, either side of your nose (this is know as the T zone and is generally the oiliest part of the face where shine appears). 5. Bronzing powder. Use a good quality bronzer and just brush a sweep of the powder over the areas the sun would fall naturally. Deepen your colour by applying additional layers of bronzer. 6. Wear Lip Balm. Choose a clear or neutral coloured lip balm that you can use throughout the day. Not only will it give your lips a smooth appearance, but it will also prevent them from getting chapped.

Hair SOS! Hair in distress? Rescue is at hand The turning of seasons usually signals a wave of new hair trends but many people don’t realise that the key to a great-looking new re-style is to firstly take a good hard look at the condition of the hair. Just like skin, hair does show visible signs of ageing and damage, so it is important that preventative measures are taken; trying to repair damaged hair at a later stage can be a long and difficult process. For many people, summer fun would have wreaked havoc on hair condition with the result of harsh sun, hot styling tools, blow drying and hair colouring, leaving hair looking tired, frizzy, dry and brittle to the touch. These changes in appearance and texture signal a desperate need for hair to be treated and rescued. There are a number of measures you can take to bring your hair back to life. Firstly, when hair is weak and fragile, using hot styling tools and harsh blow drying should be kept to a minimum. Plus, a heat protecting product should always be used to prevent further damage. Apply Kerastase Ciment Thermique Treatment (£15.50) to hair before blow-drying or styling to protect the hair; the concoction of its ingredients also strengthen and infuse hair internally with essential vitamins when heat is activated. I’d also strongly recommend using an intensive nourishing hair mask such as Kerastase Age Recharge Hair Masque (£22.50). Use it once a week for a moisture surge that revitalises and restructures damaged hair. It is also a good idea to switch to a gentler shampoo and conditioner that is specially formulated to fortify and restore moisture - the Kerastase Resistance range is especially effective. Both are available to purchase at Electric. In addition, try to towel dry hair as much as possible (patting and squeezing excess water out instead of rubbing hair together with a towel to prevent breakage). Once these steps have been taken to treat and revive hair, you should get down to your local hairdresser to trim away any dry and damaged ends which would otherwise age your whole look. Try to get a trim every eight weeks to keep hair looking healthy, and eventually you hair will be as good as new!

LETTER OF THE MONTH I straighten my hair religiously. I do use a heat protection spray but my hair is now rife with split ends and is really dry and weak at the ends! Is there anything I can do to get rid of it and make my hair look less frazzled? Overuse of hot styling tools is doing your hair no favours. So firstly, try to limit usage as much as possible – save your hair while you can! Ditch any harsh cleansing products, switching instead to a moisture protein-rich shampoo and conditioner to help strengthen and rebuild hair structure. Next, get yourself down to Electric Hairdressing Brighton for a personalised moisture and repair hair treatment (cost is only from £15)! One of our stylists will diagnose and treat your hair as necessary, bringing it back to a healthy state. I’d also recommend getting a trim while you’re there to remove those dry and damaged ends altogether, which will improve the overall look and condition of your hair. If you can’t bear to be without straight hair, use the ‘wrap drying’ technique. Using a paddle brush, smooth sections of hair up and across your head, side to side, back to front and front to back, blow drying (at a good distance) the lengths as you go through each section. This process of pulling your hair to the opposite side of the head straightens the kinks out while adding lots of natural movement.

ABSOLUTE HEALTH
FOOT WORK Our health expert Sheryl Waters discusses the advantages of massage, in particular, reflexology
T
he tremendous benefits of regular massage are irreplaceable to the human body. Massage is a variety of sometimes ancient techniques that manipulate the soft tissues of the body. It can definitely relax you, but there are some benefits of massage that go far beyond relaxation. Pain and anxiety are two common problems associated with receiving massage therapy. By soothing muscles and nerves a greater state of well being is achieved for the recipient. When you take this concept fur ther you find that massage can also benefit chronic pain and even self esteem. Massage allows for person to person contact that promotes feelings of comfort and soothing. Massage is used for sports related injuries, and to promote optimum performance of muscles. Through a pattern of exercise and massage, injuries can be avoided and greater athletic achievements can be accomplished. The regular massage prevents small injuries from becoming bigger ones and the athlete avoids the pain cycle all together. Massage is also an immune system enhancer that benefits patients with chronic immune system diseases such as HIV. Increasing the circulation of healthy blood cells in the body helps these patients fight off disease better and keep a more positive mental attitude that is crucial for their survival. During pregnancy Infants and babies have shown positive responses to massage through toddlerhood. The birthing process is often made easier and less complicated by regular massage during pregnancy and throughout the labor process. Massage for premature babies promotes better weight gain, and massage for babies with diabetes correlates with better lifelong compliance with regimens and healthier lifestyle choices. Th effects of massage on patients with high blood pressure should also not be overlooked. Massage can play a key part in the regulation and control of chronic high blood pressure by not only relaxing the patient, but also by helping the central nervous system to balance as it regulates blood flow throughout the body more efficiently. Regular massage combined with isometric exercise has been shown to improve both the blood pressure and blood regulation in patients. Massage Therapy is a technique that can benefit a great number of people with a wide variety of complaints both physical and mental. This form of therapy can be incorporated into a balanced and healthy lifestyle to promote continuous and further health and well being as well as to be used as treatment therapy for those with chronic mental and physical conditions.

Reflexology Massage Reflexology is a form of massage which applies pressure on targeted areas of the feet (or hands) using the acupressure points found on a reflexology foot char t. The ar t is said to have originated in the lands of China, Egypt and India and has its basis in the belief that reflex points on the soles of the feet correspond to the various organs and par ts of the body. For example, the inner edge of the foot has points relating to the spine and back, while the eyes, ears and sinuses are represented on the pads of the toes. Reflexologists believe that it is possible to restore health to the body by massaging these points.
“...a practitioner may use some kind of aromatherapy massage oil or essential oil as part of the treatment. It is believed to encourage the release of endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good hormones, well documented in their ability to relieve stress.” Reflexology and Back Pain Many people complain of back pain that ranges from niggling discomfor t to chronic conditions. Mostly, this is not the result of injury or trauma. Less exercise, hard physical work and a generally sedentary lifestyle for many have contributed to the segments of the population who are vir tually crippled with back problems. According to the World Health Organization, lower back pain is a leading cause of disability in the world. The first step in addressing back problems through reflexology is to find a qualified reflexologist who will use specific techniques to exer t deep pressure on the foot area corresponding with the specific back problem. This may be painful and several sessions may be required before the condition improves. Sore points are often the most impor tant ones to work on, since they represent places where energy is blocked. A session with a reflexologist to alleviate stress is a drug-free, non-invasive way of reducing tension. To help the patient to relax, a practitioner may use some kind of aromatherapy massage oil or essential oil as par t of the treatment. It is believed to encourage the release of endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good hormones, well documented in their ability to relieve stress. Reflexology is not a cure-all and may not help when there are serious underlying medical conditions. But it can reduce symptoms and aid in healing by improving lymphatic drainage and circulation, stimulation to the nerve pathways and muscle relaxation. ickwoods Country Club, Hotel & Spa has reopened under new ownership following investment of over half a million pounds.
Lee Goossens acquired the collapsed business in March 2010, with the backing of an established group of investors and business people. His intention is to establish Wickwoods as Sussex’s Premier Country Club, saying: “Our aim is to build on the unique qualities that exist at Wickwoods, creating a well-presented welcoming club, which offers a lifestyle membership unlike any other. Since re-opening, the response has been amazing and very emotional. One member presented us with a fantastic DVD of the refurbishments, which we have uploaded to the club’s website for everyone to enjoy. There is something quite special about Wickwoods and its members.” Beauty at Wickwoods provides treatment for members with carefully researched products, paying particular attention to the philosophies that drive them, as well as their specific uses and effects. Senior therapist Laura King says: “We want to earn a reputation for providing treatments that really work, and are therefore delighted to announce our partnership with an incredible organic range called Li-Tya, alongside that favourite of the celebs, Crystal Clear. We pride ourselves on being able to offer wonderful surroundings, effective luxury products and a service second to none.” Membership to Wickwoods Country Club will be limited to 1600 to insure there is plenty of space to enjoy the facilities, while an exciting second phase is carried out in October of this year. This second phase of investment will take the already fantastic facilities to a level beyond compare, firmly establishing Wickwoods as Sussex’s Premier Country Club. Wickwoods is also the perfect place to hold your wedding party, with small or larger groups accommodated, and a unique range of facilities on offer. Enjoy a stress-free wedding day in beautiful surroundings. For a strictly limited period the club is offering a free month’s membership, no joining fee, as well as a free gym and tennis induction. ABSOLUTE RESTAURANT REVIEW
Gourmet Gallery Rishma Patel takes a visit to The Gallery Bistro, a new gem among the eateries of Hove
T
he Gallery Bistro opened its doors in October 2009 under the ownership of Heather Armstrong. Many of you may know Heather, who also owns the highly respected Dresswell of Hove. In fact Dresswell used to be situated where the Gallery Bistro is, but needed to move across the road to a bigger premises, and luckily for us foodies, this created a perfect opportunity to open The Gallery Bistro. Heather along with the help of managers Wayne and Tony and their team, have transformed the former clothes shop into one of Hove’s most wonderful eateries. On a dull Thursday evening, my father, Ash and I were invited to dine at The Gallery Bistro in Hove. The restaurant has lovely seating outside for alfresco dining, nicely cornered off, and as soon as you step through the door, a spectrum of colour hits you. Contemporary padded multi-coloured booths are positioned near the window, perfect for people-watching! We were warmly welcomed by Wayne, who has such a personal approach I felt like we were old friends. He took us through and showed us to our table, and we took in the sophisticated kaleidoscope interior. There is a bar made from coloured blocks of glass illuminated by lights, and vibrant coloured chairs and napkins adorn the tables. The layout is very elegant but retains a fun and relaxed atmosphere. Although the restaurant is large, the space is intimate yet very light and airy, cleverly placed mirrors allow diners to see the bar and the chef while they eat, and colourful art adorns the walls. We perused the menu which was created by Head Chef Peter Bohannon previously from English’s, Brighton. Peter was enjoying his holiday in Egypt so we were left in the very capable hands of Martin, the Sous Chef, also previously from English’s. Martin explained that all the produce arrives daily and is locally sourced - suppliers are all from East and West Sussex. The menu changes regularly to ensure that they are taking advantage of seasonal produce; this is the
46
perfect basis for good food, a chef who really cares about fresh, locally sourced food. Everything is made daily and is all home-cooked. The baking is left in the competent hands of Deirdre, who makes the quiches and scrumptious cakes. Deirdre works at the bistro for two days a week and is the cook at Petworth House for Lord and Lady Egremont. She has also cooked for the Maharaja of Jodhpur, both in England and in India! For starters dad chose the selection of rustic breads, olives, balsamic vinegar, olive oil and butter and I chose the Scottish smoked salmon canon. While we waited, the restaurant was filling up with families celebrating, couples enjoying romantic meals, friends having a catch up and lone diners enjoying the weekly jazz and blues bands which play every Thursday and Friday evening. The atmosphere is sophisticated yet very relaxed with laughter filing the air. Within no time at all our delicious starters arrived. My salmon was exceptional - a perfectly grilled slab of Scottish smoked salmon, that fell apart with the touch of a fork, delicate in flavour but still pungent. It lay on a bed of baby leaves, adorned by beetroot and grated fresh horseradish, drizzled with a lovely thick, sticky balsamic reduction. Wayne also bought out another starter for us to try, hand-picked brown crab, sweet flakes of local brown crab tossed with fine micro herbs with a lemoncello and coriander dressing presented in the crab shell. Wonderful! The service was second to none - the team at The Gallery Bistro effortlessly efficient. Our main courses arrived - I must have been in a fishy mood as I had one of my favourite dishes, pan fried naturally-smoked haddock fillet on steamed baby spinach leaves in a creamy cheddar cheese sauce, with a side of new potatoes. I was pleasantly surprised to see the haddock wasn’t bright yellow, due to it being naturally smoked. Underneath lay a generous bed of baby spinach leaves, drizzled with a rich creamy cheese sauce. Dad chose roast Sussex chicken breast, a generous portion of succulent, moist chicken served with wild mushrooms, on a bed of earthy baby spinach with a delicious full-bodied red wine jus and truffle oil sauce, served with seasoned hand cut crispy chips. All delicious. We really enjoyed our meals but I was too full to enjoy dessert. Dad had the chocolate mousse and I couldn’t help but have a try of this; deliciously creamy and smooth, accompanied by a shortbread biscuit and some strawberries! We had such a lovely evening, the food and produce are as fresh as can be and all home cooked daily, with great service and atmosphere. I urge you to visit the Gallery Bistro - you won’t be disappointed to discover one of Hove’s real jewels. 115 Church Road, Hove Tel: 01273 777488 www.gallerybistro.co.uk

ABSOLUTE RECIPE
Granddad’s Macaroni Cheese This traditional recipe for Macaroni Cheese guarantees to make guests’ mouths water for more… Mamma Mia!
Macaroni Cheese Preparation time: Less than 30 mins Cooking time: Approximately 30 mins Serves 4 Ingredients: 1 large onion, diced 1 tinned tomatoes chopped 1 large tomato, sliced 40g/ 1½ oz butter 40g/1½ plain flour 600ml/1pint 1½fl oz milk 250g/9oz grated cheddar Method: First, make a roux sauce (the white sauce base) by dissolving the butter in a pan. Then take off of the heat, and gradually add the flour. Stir until the mixture forms a smooth paste, which leaves the sides and base of pan cleanly. Next start to pour in splashes of the milk stirring continuously. If it becomes clogged, use a fork to stir. Allow to boil. Keep stirring to keep the mixture smooth. Then once it is boiling, take off of the heat and gradually add the cheese (leave some for garnish) and tinned tomatoes. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Stir but don’t crush the tomatoes. Bring to boil and then simmer. Meanwhile, boil a pan of salted water and add the diced onion and pasta. Bring to the boil and simmer for as long as pasta brand suggests (usually 12 mins). Next drain the pasta and onion, and add to the tomato and cheese sauce. Then pour all of the contents in to a large ovenproof dish. Sprinkle the remaining grated cheese on top of the dish, and scatter the sliced tomato also. Place in a preheated oven and cook until top is golden and crispy and bubbling (about 12-15 mins). Alternatively, place under a hot grill.

umber one pop band Scouting For Girls swapped mics for bikes this summer when they took on the SFG Charity Chopper Challenge - riding from London to Brighton on Chopper bikes to raise money for WellChild, the national charity for sick children. The three members of Scouting For Girls, singer Roy Stride, bass player Greg Churchouse and drummer Peter Ellard rode their Chopper cycles more than sixty miles from London to Brighton. Their tremendous effort aids WellChild’s Reach Out for Sick Children nurse appeal which aims to pay for more WellChild children’s nurses across the UK. These nurses help to get seriously ill children out of hospital and cared for at home with their families. After their marathon bike ride, the band played an intimate acoustic concert for fans at the Komedia in Brighton. They took requests and answered questions from a small audience of 265. www.wellchild.org.uk

beautiful day and an exquisite setting led to a very successful fundraiser for the NSPCC recently. Nearly 100 people enjoyed a smoked salmon lunch in the private moated gardens of Newtimber House. A tombola, a wine raffle and the most amazing cakes and puddings contributed to the excitement of the afternoon, and all went home utterly charmed, and managed to raise over £2,500.

he Hove Open Bowls Tournament took place this year in the week of the 19th July with Finals Day on Saturday 24th. Once again, participents and organisers alike had a truly great week made better by the first full week of sunshine for many a year. Visitors came from across the globe including Canada, as well as more locally Jersey, Cambridgeshire, Surrey and Bucks. The mens Singles 2010 was won by Malcolm Dare from Torquay who beat our local lad David Hubbard. The ladies Singles was won by Amy Truran who beat Maureen Smith. Both games were fiercely contested and the spectators were certainly not disappointed with the afternoons play! There were some 12 Sponsors who generously supported the Tournament this year, three of which are new ones; Caffyns, Leonardos (Italian Restaurant) and Porsche Mid Sussex. Porsche kindly delivered the Patron of the tournament the Mayor of Brighton & Hove, Geoff Wells, to open the Tournament on the Monday in style. Next year the Singles competition will be

open to both Men and Ladies as will the Triples event. The Mens Pairs and Mixed Pairs will remain unchanged. Bowls is certainly a sport where Ladies can compete on a par with men. It is certainly not down to an issue of strength!

Not the first time...?

“The triumph of hope over experience.” This is how a second marriage was described by 18th-century essayist Samuel Johnson.
YY
How can we learn from the first and make a success of subsequent times around...
G
etting married is a big decision to make the first time, and an even bigger one the second, or even third, time around. What happened to your last marriage? Can you learn anything to take with you to the next marriage? This is such a huge area, with so many varying factors, that it is almost impossible to outline definitive guidelines for a successful next marriage. So much depends on previous events. We can look at a few... Spouse passed away. In this case, the widow or widower was probably still happy in the marriage and, after grieving, is left with feelings of loneliness. It is important when choosing to marry again, that you are not trying to replace the lost spouse, but instead treat your new wife/husband as the individual they are, loving them for themselves, while still keeping fond memories of your previous spouse. An understanding partner will accept that you loved your late spouse, but should feel confident that you care for them as much. Grew apart. Many couples grow closer as the years go by, but others grow apart, and start leading their own lives, until the marriage just fizzles out. If you don’t like the same things, it is difficult to enjoy your time together, and although you can always compromise to a point, this will not always work if both parties are not truly interested. Perhaps when choosing a new partner, make sure you have more interests in common. Infidelity. If this has been the cause of the breakup of your previous marriage, obviously this is a difficult one to get over. Don’t take feelings of jealousy and insecurity to your next marriage - treat your new partner with the trust they deserve. With a second or third marriage, there is often children from one or maybe both parties, from their previous marriages. It is crucial before getting married again, to make sure that everyone is happy with, or at least accepts the situation. If this is not the case, there could be resentment, which is likely to grow over time. It helps if the exes are also OK with the new situation, if not, try and resolve before taking the plunge. There are so many factors that cause a marriage to end, and so many things to consider when making those vows again. No-one can predict the future, but you will know if it feels right, and you are ready. Good luck!
“...I know I’m with the woman I want to spend the rest of my life with. So the wedding – that’s just the party.”

Second marriages account for four out of every ten weddings in the UK. Doing it all over again can be a daunting exercise. Here are some common questions arising when deciding to get married for the second time. My fiancé and I have both been married and divorced. Is it possible for us to have a religious ceremony this time? If you are Church of England, it’s up to your parish priest to use his discretion. Non-conformist Christian denominations often allow remarriages, but check to make sure. Catholics cannot remarry in church unless their previous marriage ended in death or annulment. You can marry for a second time (but not a third) in a Greek Orthodox Church. It’s possible to have a Jewish wedding after divorce but the Rabbi must be consulted well beforehand in order to resolve any outstanding issues under Jewish law. What legal documents do I need to supply before I get married again? Your decree absolute, or, if you are widowed, the death certificate of your former husband or wife. What should I wear? Surely white’s not right for a second marriage? If you had a white wedding first time around, you may well feel that going for the same thing again isn’t appropriate. On the other hand, if you want to, why not? Who pays for a second marriage? With the best will in the world, you can’t really expect your parents to fork out for marriage number two. If it’s a second marriage for you both, then bride and groom are usually expected to pick up the tab. Who will give me away? If you remarry after divorce in a Church of England church, the marriage ceremony is the same as if you were doing it for the first time, so your father can give you away - again - if you want him to. However, he doesn’t have to. It’s quite acceptable to be escorted up the aisle by a close male or female relative or friend. We’ve both got kids from our previous marriages. Do you think they should get involved in the wedding? What to do about the children is one of the biggest issues facing couples who are remarrying after divorce. Most professionals recommend that children should be involved wherever possible. Leaving them out could give them the idea that they are not part of this new relationship. Older children can decide themselves.

Boost your big day confidence
W
e all want to look our best on a wedding day, whether you are the bride, groom, a friend or a relative. The natural treatments Becky Hollands offers can help you achieve a glowing complextion, correct annoying lines and wrinkles and boost your confidence in time for the big day. Although she can offer noticeable treatments with dramatic results, the majority of clients wish to look naturally enhanced and radiant.
Dermal Fillers (Restylane) This treatment offers both men and women a complete solution to naturally refresh their looks by restoring youthful volume to the skin, perfect for those wishing to smooth out the visable signs of ageing. The product is a clear gel made of a natural substance, Hyaluronic acid. It occurs naturally in younger people, but diminishes with age. By replenishing the Hyaluronic acid skin appears not just smoother but youthfully hydrated. Treatments included in this range are products to soften lines around the lips (commonly known as lipstick bleed lines or smokers lines) and to enhance the shape and volume of the lips. Another very popular treatment is Restylane vital. By injecting very small amounts of Hyaluronic acid under the skins surface, the quality and condition of your skin is improved and rejuvenated in a way creams and moisturisers simply cannot do. Other areas treated with Restylane Vital are the hands, neck and décolletage.
Skin Rejuvenation with Dermaroller This treatment is a non-surgical solution to skin regeneration and repair. As there are no foreign substances entering the skin it is a
less aggressive alternative to chemical peels and laser treatments. Requiring no ‘down time’, the dermaroller is a fantastic solution for the repair of acne scars and for the regeneration of the face, neck, hands and for the treatment of stretch marks. The treatment is a natural process with an excellent safety profile. It uses tiny micro-medical needles on the skin, encouraging regeneration and repair, leaving you with brighter, healthier, younger looking skin. The results are astonishing. Please note that treatments such as the Dermaroller and ‘Vital’ will need to be planned with plenty of time before the wedding day as they are courses of treatments.
Wrinkle Softening (frown line reduction) By injecting very small amounts of a muscle relaxant, frown lines can soften and even disappear. Most of us like to express our emotions and feel it’s an important part of our character. However after time these lines resemble scars and are noticeable even when the face is at rest. Studies have proved that alleviating these lines can lift the spirit and enhance a feeling of well-being.

T
he groom carrying the bride over the threshold, is one of the most romantic of traditions, and has several places of origin. A Roman groom would carry the bride over the threshold so that she did not trip up on her way into her new home. This was considered bad luck and could lead to a poor marriage. The Romans believed demons waited by the doorway to trip the bride so the new husband would carry his bride in to protect her. The groom would also carry the bride around the hearth to formally bring her into the family. Another belief is that the bride was ‘hesitant’ to give herself to her new husband. It was considered lady-like for the new bride to be, or at least give the impression, she was reticent to give herself to her new husband. In order to encourage her into the bedroom, the groom would carry her over the threshold. During the days of ‘Marriage by Capture,’ the bride was certainly not going to go peacefully into the bridegroom’s abode, thus, she was dragged or carried across the threshold. In even earlier times, it was believed that family demons followed the woman and to keep her family demons from going into the groom’s home, she was carried across the threshold upon her entering for the first time. After that, the demons could not enter as she would come in and go out of the home. Whatever the real beginnings of this tradition, it is still carried out by a lot of married couples entering the marriage home for the first time as man and wife. But, we are pleased to say, the wife always goes willingly these days!

Our landlords have peace of mind The letting market still favours the landlord as demand continues to outstrip supply, says Ben Cannon of Lanes lettings Landlords are finally deciding to stay put With yields and demand both still on the rise, the sales market is looking a little shaky. I am finding that landlords are returning to the rental market and deciding not to sell. New landlord instructions have increased at a greater rate than the past few months. The percentage of landlords selling their property when the lease expires has declined from 4.6% to 4.2%, the lowest levels since January 2007. Rental growth has played a part in their decision to keep renting and I am even more optimistic about the future rental growth than I was a few months ago. James Scott-Lee, a RICS spokesperson, recently said: “the sales markets loss is the lettings market gain. Some would-be sellers are retreating from selling and are letting or re-letting their properties while they wait for mortgage lenders to offer buyers more favourable lending criteria. While transaction numbers in the sales market are weak, many are taking advantage of rising rents and yields in the private sector.” Partner with Lanes Lettings We at Lanes Lettings thoroughly reference all tenants to give landlords peace of mind and are proactive in the marketing of property ensuring that landlords have the minimum time empty between tenants occupancy. We work for a mutually beneficial outcome and endeavour to add quality to all our relationships with customers. We have dedicated support staff on hand to facilitate the collection of any outstanding rents and any other problems that arise. We understand how important communication is! You don’t need to worry about the status of your investment as we will keep you updated every step of the way.

They were enthusiastic, pro-active and helpful. I happily recommend them for their professional, customer friendly approach.” Cyril, Brighton landlord. “I used Lanes Lettings initially for the price, which was competitive, and they kept to the appointment time! They kept me informed throughout the letting process and I was able to seek advice whenever I needed. They found new tenants with minimal fuss and I am pleased with their service.” Dan, Brighton Landlord I urge all the landlords reading this today to contact me, as we still only charge 7% for full management with no set up fee and a free rent guarantee provided. OPEN HOUSE
Mrs Jay Jayaram of Strutt & Parker points out the advantages of being part of their next Open House Day
F
ollowing the success of the Open House Days organised by estate agents Strutt & Parker, there will be another taking place on Saturday 9th October 2010. Strutt & Parker regularly get enquiries from house sellers looking to take part in the next event. If you have been considering selling your home, this may be an ideal opportunity to combine the launch of your house on the market alongside a unique marketing initiative, specifically designed for current market conditions. In addition, there is also the prospect of a strong autumn market and a real opportunity to sell your home before the Open House Day. The last event attracted both local buyers and those from further afield. The results demonstrate that buyers find it a convenient and easy way to see several houses on the same day, without the pressure of a formal appointment (but only people known to us are issued with tickets). From a sellers point of view it avoids the need to prepare the house for multiple viewings, and by concentrating efforts on a single day, it provides a useful addition to our other marketing efforts (very much NOT instead of them). So far Strutt & Parker’s Open House Day formula has attracted hundreds of houses, over a thousand buyers, and £86million of offers. 16% of houses taking part have sold as a direct result of the event. The National Estate Agency Department is accepted as being a market leader. Whether you require advice on a cottage, house or farm, the team is highly knowledgeable and experienced in the specialist field of marketing property and maximising value. Clients come to us because of Strutt’s national resources and London offices behind them. Tim Page-Ratcliff runs the agency business and has been based at the Lewes Office for over 20 years. He is an expert on the property market throughout Sussex, and his energetic and pro-active team are always happy to advise on any property related question. If you would like to join the next event or to discuss the market more generall please call 01273 475 411.

Glenn Mishon of Mishon Mackay predicts the city’s property market for the months ahead
nervous mood has descended, not lightened by the banks bumper results with those excepted figures at the end of July for economic growth in quarter two. As for the double dip there are going to be slowdowns in economic growth throughout the world, particularly in America, but unlikely globally, and most improbable for Great Britain, unless of course we are in for another financial shock! Yet despite all that, nerves are there, reflected in a significant drop in consumer and business confidence. The property market has been well reported to have slipped backwards over the past three months. With the end of HIPS (Home Information Packs) we have seen a flood of “speculative vendors” come to the market, which has tilted the balance away from the fragile growth that we all saw in 2009 and in the first quarter of this year. With many of the banks and building societies still reluctant to lend and with significant increase in property stock, together with less buyers, this is a time for caution. My advice? Don’t get left behind, talk to your estate agent about the way forward with the marketing of your home. There has never been a more important time, with the concerns that we must all have regarding the next six months, to make sure of the following: if you are hoping to move between now and the end of the year, that your house is in order, in terms of price, presentation and the advertising schedule that should have been prepared for the next four to six weeks. I am very positive about the prospects of this city’s property market in the long term, there is no doubt that Brighton and Hove is just a fantastic place to live, with a feel about it, not found in any other city that I have visited outside of London. This is a great time to buy a home, but you must be realistic and make sure your current property is sensibly priced to allow you to make that move. If you are in the fortunate position of having already sold, or being a cash buyer, then step in and take advantage of one of those homes, which forms part of all agents swollen property stocks.
“I am very positive about the prospects of the city’s property market in the long term” Interest rates are likely to stay at an all time low for many months to come and even if they do sneak up by half or even one percent in the next twelve months, which I honestly believe is all it could be, then we will still have cheap money for home purchase. Yes, you have got to have a good deposit and that is not easy for everyone, but if you have got one, get out there and find yourself a house, it is a great time to buy in our fair city. BEACHY HEAD
Beachy Head

t was a beautiful sunny day in June when I walked along the cliff top at Beachy Head, and the views were spectacular. Looking east towards the cliffs at Hastings and beyond, there was a blue haze with streaks of purple.
Below, a calm sea sparkled in a southerly breeze and four ships, almost in line ahead, were making their way down-channel. Where were they going - South America, New York, the Pacific or just across the Channel to Le Havre? It was on such a day in 1690 that a great battle took place on the sea below the cliffs: the Battle of Beachy Head. Now there is not a great deal written about this battle in English history
A battle, smugglers and a reverend
books, which is hardly surprising as the English and Dutch fleets were soundly beaten by the French. It happened like this... A powerful French fleet was proceeding up-channel towards Dover. An English fleet, together with its Dutch allies, was instructed that at all costs it must stop the French. With just 56 ships the Earl of Torrington, First Lord of the Admiralty, would find this a difficult task; he was outnumbered by the French 80 sail. But, sensibly, he played for time and waited for reinforcements. And he was doing well until, anchored off Beachy Head on the 29th June, he received a command from Queen Mary:
Tim Parker takes a walk at one of Sussex’s most compelling sites Picture by Alan Godwin
“Fight the enemy!” In those days, if you valued your life you didn’t disobey the command of your monarch, and so the next day Torrington’s fleet attacked the French. It was a fierce battle, and what a sight it must have been for those living in Eastdean and Eastbourne: the roar of cannon echoing off the cliffs, the shouts of the wounded, the sinking ships, fire and smoke. The French won the day, and Torrington had no option but to lead his defeated ships towards Dover. The French followed, but they too had been damaged and they were unable to take advantage of their victory. As for Torrington, on arrival in London he was sent to the Tower and put on trial. Mercifully, The Lords determined that he had done his best and found him not guilty.

Top of h her er lleague eague As the new Head of one of the county’s most outstanding and elite girls schools, Lorna Duggleby has had a big challenge on her hands the last few months leading Brighton and Hove High School through to continued success. Absolute Brighton asks Ms Duggleby how being at the helm has been for her so far Congratulations on your new role. How has the first academic year been for you at Brighton and Hove High School? I began my role at Brighton and Hove High School GDST as Executive Head and so it was wonderful to come here full time as Head in January. It meant that I was able to get on with things much more speedily than usual as I already had a handle on the school. The main thing for me has been getting to know the girls. As Executive Head I was only here for one or two days a week. The girls are what the school is all about and I have tried to get involved with as many activities as possible so that they can get to know me too. Please tell us a bit about yourself and where you worked prior? This is my third headship. I have worked at all kinds of schools in the past, all boys, all girls, mixed, state and independent. I feel very privileged to have had such a wide educational experience. My last school was Bromley High School also a Girls Day School Trust school. I was Head there for nine years. I am married and have two grown –up children – a son of 26 ( a music graduate) and a daughter of 23 (a psychology graduate, about to embark on a PGCE). When I finally get home, I enjoy reading to unwind and listening to all types of music. I take the dog for long walks to try to stay fit! When you were given the news that you were to be the new Head of Brighton and Hove High, what were your initial thoughts? As I already knew the school I was absolutely delighted. I feel that I have much to offer and want to make quite a few changes so that the girls and their parents get a really first-class education here. And now you have been able to enjoy a school year there. Have you put any changes/improvements in place? Yes, quite a few! Our examination success is well-known but we have set in motion several new tracking systems to give us even more information on the girls as they make their way through
we were viewed as an academic hothouse. This is really not true. We value all areas of education and have put on several additional events (eg the Artists’ Open House and the Dance Exhibition which will be at the Corn Exchange during this Academic Year) to show us as we really are. We have also put on additional clubs at the Senior and Junior Schools. Have those changes been successful? According to all the positive emails and comments I have received, I think they have been hugely successful. But success is an ongoing thing and I think as the years go on we shall go from strength to strength. What has been the best part of your new role so far?

thing as a glass ceiling. What do you think distinguishes your school from other independent schools? The obvious feature is that we are the only all-through girls’ school (3-18) in the Brighton area. I firmly believe that the vast majority of girls do better in an all-girls’ environment. When I separated the girls and the boys for academic lessons at the co-educational school where I was previously Head, the results shot through the ceiling for both sexes. The boys did not have the girls to dominate or show off to, consequently they worked harder. The girls felt less inhibited and more confident; they felt able to have a go and be more bold. At BHHS the ethos is very supportive; the girls look after one another and celebrate success together. A further unique feature is that we are part of the fantastic Girls’ Day School Trust. This gives parents and girls the security
And finally, what was has been the best piece of advice that has helped you in your career, and who was it from? “If it is good for the School and good for the community you do it no matter how hard it may be.” This was from Dr Jo Santana (interestingly the cousin of Carlos Santana the international musician), who was my mentor whilst I undertook my masters degree. He is a hugely admirable person – a Vietnam Vet, who flew from aircraft carriers and was shot down. He later became a High School Principal in Los Angeles. He visited my last two schools and I look forward to him coming to Brighton and Hove High School. developing naturally through careful teaching in an environment specifically tailored to their needs. They aim to protect childhood in a society that encourages its early decline: a world of invention, enthusiasm and excitement as well as a place of learning where sound values are taught. This is achieved by the family nature of the school – small, caring, flexible – in tune with the needs of individual children and families. fans and collectors after a two year break since his last collection. Featuring five powerful and emotive works, the backdrop to four of the limited edition pieces is the elegant grand piano, painted with almost photographic detail and the evocative use of light and shade. Rich with narrative and exquisite fine art finesse, Mark Grieves has introduced the iconic figures of Charlie Chaplin and Alice in Wonderland into two of his paintings. J’adore also have their collection of Bob Dylan limited edition prints from his Drawn Blank Series 2010. While Dylan has been a committed visual artist for more than four decades, The Drawn Blank Series has cast a vibrant new light on the singular creativity of one of the world’s most important and influential cultural figures. Washington Green Fine Art Publishing are responsible for transforming all these limited edition pieces, for you to purchase and enjoy in your home. The three artists’ contrasting, yet equally engaging, responses to the landscape make for an inspiring collection of work. Far more than a simple moment caught within the landscape, Daniel Ablitt’s paintings capture a mood and reminiscence, his delicate use of colour effortlessly producing a daydream quality. Winner of the T.N Lawrence Fine Art Prize, Daniel lives in Somerset and has work in both public and private collections throughout the UK and abroad. Acclaimed artist Yvonne Coomber’s sparkling florals explode with a technicolour palette.
