32nd ANNUAL TAMPA BAY SENIOR GAMES - Oct 1-12 Seniors can go for the gold at the 32nd Annual Tampa Bay Senior Games will be on Oct. 1-12. Registration is open until Sept. 21 for anyone age 50 or older as of Dec. 31, 2012. The games feature two weeks of competition in various activities, such as basketball, billiards, bowling, cribbage, dominoes, golf, hobby show, pickleball, pinochle, swimming, table tennis, talent showcase, tennis, and track and field. New events this year include softball and corn hole. Entry fee includes unlimited participation in the games, a ticket to the awards luncheon, opening ceremony continental breakfast, and t-shirt. Steven Spielberg’s beloved “E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial” - Oct 3. “E.T.” is the fourth most successful movie of all time in the domestic box office. In honor of the film’s 30th Anniversary, the event features the all-new, digitally remastered feature film, as well as a special taped introduction by TCM host Ben Mankiewicz. Fans will discover how Spielberg came up with the idea for “E.T.,” while Drew Barrymore—who plays Gertie in the film—shares what the film means to her 30 years later. Lawrence of Arabia 50th Anniversary Event: Digitally Restored - Oct 4. This special event features the film that has been meticulously restored from the original 65mm negative; an exclusive introduction from Lawrence of Arabia star and Academy Award nominee Omar Sharif; as well as newsreel footage of the New York premiere and the original film set in Aqaba, Jordan. In addition, Academy Award-winning Director Martin Scorsese will discuss the themes of Lawrence of Arabia and its influence on other iconic films. Led Zeppelin: Celebration Day - Oct 17-18. Ybor OktoberFest Pub Crawl - Oct 6 Sample beers at patio bars and pubs throughout historic Ybor City. The Ybor Chamber is holding their 3rd Annual OktoberFest Pub Crawl Saturday, October 6th. 2012 Lions Eye Institute Eye Ball Gala - Oct 6 Hundreds will gather and focus on “Keeping the World in Sight” during the Lions Eye Institute for Transplant & Research’s annual Eye Ball Gala. This event will highlight the need for ocular advancements, and showcase the programs and research that LEITR is pioneering to help the blind and visually impaired. Throughout the night, guests will hear from corneal transplant recipients that have had sight restored thanks to LEITR, as well as local and national leaders working tirelessly to end blindness. Mrs. World, April Lufriu, will join the speakers and discuss her passion for furthering ocular research and helping the visually impaired. In addition, LEITR will honor two professionals who have dedicated their careers to advancing ocular research. Dr. Lewis R. Groden will receive the Light of Sight Award, and Dr. Henry F. FIVE BY FIVE AT THE TAMPA MUSEUM OF ART - Oct 19 The exhibition features 5X5 inch artwork made and donated by celebrities, international and local artists, designers, and college students. Fantastic and extraordinary performances will be presented throughout the evening by local artists in music, dance, theatre and spoken word. Five different five-minute performances each hour from professional musicians, poets and actors throughout the evening. The sale of the artwork will raise money for individual artist grants and workshops. FIVE by FIVE features an anonymous art exhibition, meaning the artwork is signed on the back and the artist’s name is revealed upon purchase. All artwork submitted is available for the FIVE by FIVE event is priced $25. An online gallery will open during the artists’ submission period so you can preview the work in the show. Hillsborough County Fair - Oct 1721 Folks are gearing up for a fun-filled five days of tail swishing and wing flapping fun. With livestock shows each day, there will be sheep jumping, cow clipping and rabbit costume contests. Youth compete for showmanship awards as they lead their animals around the ring. For the 4H or FFA students who have raised a pig, it is not always easy to part with the pet at the annual Swine Auction, Saturday, October 20 at 7:00 pm. For all ages there is the traditional Family Living Arts and Crafts where entrants vie for that blue ribbon in art, photography, baking, needlepoint, quilting and more. Kids enter the “Just For Kids” Department. All entries will be on display in an old-fashioned county fair kind of way. Beauty abounds the weekend before the fair opens, with the Harvest Queen Pageant on Saturday, October 13 on the fairgrounds. The 2012 Queen and Junior Queen will be crowned and begin their reign immediately. Babies, toddlers and children will be featured in the Children’s Pageant on Sunday, October 21. From Recycled Yard Art Competition to Hay Bale Decorating there will be creative sights to see and to taste. The 4H Foundation holds a Bar-b-Que dinner on Saturday, October 20, and there is a Chili CookOff on Sunday, October 21. The Cattle women will have a booth offering tasty beef recipes and sponsoring a “Kids Cooking Contest”. There is plenty of traditional fair food including roast corn on the cob, mini-donuts and fried vegetables along with the Brandon Shriners grilling up hamburgers and hot dogs. If the summer heat beat up your landscaping, the FNGLA auction taking place on Saturday, October 20 offers bargains galore. An adult and youth Horticulture competition gives those gardeners a chance to show off the home grown plants. A Youth Horse Show kicks off arena events on Saturday, October 13 in a pre-fair event. The Bay Area Bandits Mounted Shooting Club holds a show on the 20th of October and the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Mounted Posse holds a Speed Show in the arena on Sunday, October 21. The exciting Ranch Rodeo will bring in a crowd on Friday and Saturday nights as ranch hands compete for cash prizes as they team up in events like Wild Cow Milking, Bronc Riding, Mutton Busting and more. Desert Moon Band offers a pre-rodeo show too. TROMA GIVES FREE MOVIES TO FANS Lloyd Kaufman (President of Troma Entertainment & creator of the Toxic Avenger) announced recently that nearly 250 films from the Troma catalog are available to view for free. The titles range from Troma hits like Sgt. Kabukiman NYPD and Redneck Zombies to hard-to-find movies like Star Worms II: Attack of the Pleasure Pods and classic films from Troma’s Roan Group archive such as White Zombie. “We hope that this demonstration of how much we respect our fans will lead to a greater partnership in the future,” said Kaufman. “They are the main reason why we are still here after 40 years.” Established in 1974 by Yale friends Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz, Troma Entertainment is one of the longest-running independent movie studios in United States history, and one of the best-known names in the industry. Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition at the Mahaffey - thru March 3, 2012 During the 100th anniversary year of the Ship’s sinking, the Mahaffey presents Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition. On April 15, 1912, Titanic, the world’s largest ocean liner, sank after colliding with an iceberg just five days into its highly anticipated maiden voyage. This disaster claimed more than 1,500 lives and shook the world’s confidence in the infallibility of modern technology. More than 5,500 authentic artifacts, including delicate porcelain dishes and a 17-ton section of the hull, have been recovered on research expeditions since the Ship’s discovery in 1985. Journey, Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo Gear Up to Rock on Tour Oct 12 During their initial 14 years of existence (1973-1987), Journey altered their musical approach and their personnel extensively while becoming a top touring and recording band. The only constant factor was guitarist Neal Schon. The original unit featured Schon, bassist Ross Valory, drummer Prairie Prince (replaced by Aynsley Dunbar), and guitarist George Tickner (who left after the first album). Another former Santana member, keyboard player and singer Gregg Rolie, joined shortly afterward. This lineup recorded Journey (1975), the first of three moderate-selling jazz-rock albums given over largely to instrumentals. By 1977, however, the group decided it needed a strong vocalist/frontman and hired Steve Perry. The fourth album, Infinity, sold a million copies within a year. When Journey released Escape, it broke them through to the top ranks of pop groups by scoring three Top Ten hit singles: “Who’s Crying Now,” “Don’t Stop Believin’,” and “Open Arms.” Following a 1986 tour, Journey disbanded. After several incarnations, Journey found a new frontman in Arnel Pineda, a Filipino vocalist that they discovered after seeing him perform on YouTube. Pineda made his debut with the band in 2008, the same year that Journey released Revelation. Fueled by the adult contemporary hit “After All These Years,” Revelation was a surprise hit that wound up going platinum. Journey returned in the summer of 2011 with Eclipse, a concept album that saw the band tie together its progressive rock beginnings with its ‘80s arena rock peak.

Asia’s self titled debut release became the biggest selling album of 1982 spawning several Top 10 singles and sales exceeding 7 million copies. t’s hard to believe that the Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza Restaurant in South Tampa is part of a chain (number 33 and still growing), as it has such a casual neighborhood feel, and the pizza’s ingredients are so very fresh. It was founded in 2002 by restauranteur Anthony Bruno in Ft. Lauderdale when he could not find the wonderful authentic pizza he enjoyed as a young man in Brooklyn. It was time to introduce the taste of coal-fired pizza to Floridians. With the smashing success of his pizza concept, he expanded throughout Florida, and into Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey, New York and Connecticut. easons 52’s new fall menu offers diners some fresh delectable choices, from appetizers to dessert. I sampled some of their tasty dishes recently and was more than pleased with everything. The restaurant’s Master Sommelier, George Miliotes has come up with clever wine pairings to complement Director of Culinary Chef Clifford Pleau‘s new menu. This season Miliotes’ theme is “Drink Them Before They’re Famous,” introducing some new wines into the mix. Double Hummus with Sea Salt Lavosh

Seasons 52 is a fresh grill and wine bar located in 13 states, with 9 restaurants in Florida, and found locally in Tampa and Orlando. An open kitchen is always a comfort to diners, and Seasons 52 is a bustling one. Using wood-fire grilling and brick-oven cooking actually produces food which is lower in calories. The restaurant states that nothing on its menu is over 475 calories. Chef Pleau is inspired by what’s best at the farmer’s market, and this season he’s chosen fall fruits, veggies and apropo colors.

The wine paired was a Farrier Andiron Semillon, Alexander ‘09 — a rich white wine similar to Savion Blanc. Some real thoughts of the fall season went into our second course, a Maple Leaf Farms Sesame Duck Salad served with apples, mint, cranberries, pecans, and butternut squash. or the uninitiated, Carmel Cafe & Wine Bar is a little slice of the California coast plunked down in Florida. If you look out the restaurant’s window, you expect to see cliffside cypress trees leaning out over the ocean. But this is Florida, so no cliffs. However, the interior decor has a definitely CA feel as does the eclectic modern Mediterranean style cuisine. Also, a bit of Silicon Valley is present with the clever use of iPads as menus! All the menu items are beautifully photographed with complete descriptions and (very reasonable) prices. You can order your courses as you go along, or all at once. The iPads are easy to use, and also very intuitive. If you have a restless child (or internet-addicted significant other) you can even troll the internet with it. What sets this menu apart from the same-old same-old is the creative use of their fresh ingredients. The new fall offerings include recipes you probably haven’t experienced in other area restaurants. Our recent menu sampling at the new Carmel Cafe in Hyde Park was a real taste bud treat.

Carmel Cafe has concocted their own seasonal cocktails, and one is sure to please you. We tried the Italian Old Fashioned with Buffalo Trace Kentucky bourbon, peach jam, and amarena cherry, and the Watermelon Granita - a hibiscus-infused watermelon margarita, which was our favorite. The Cafe’s Mezze Platter starter dish is a trip to the Med with edamame hummus, Muhammarra and goat cheese stuffed pepperdews, fried feta cheese, marinated artichoke hearts, sundried tomatoes and grilled pita. The flavorful Madeira Dates stuffed with goat cheese and Serrano ham was an unexpected menu item. Another great choice was the Danish Baked Brie with toasted walnuts, dried cranberries and puff pastry. Not to be missed is one of Carmel’s wonderful flatbreads. We had the Seasonal Flatbread with caramelized pear, blue cheese and roasted red pepper, which was crispy and full of fall flavors. Seafood lovers will want to try the Seafood Medley with scallops, shrimp, calamari, mussels, chorizo, Israeli couscous, olives and roasted peppers. The Roasted veggie of the evening was one of our particular favorites - Brussels Sprouts with bacon. 70

Two new pastas are delightful - the Four Cheese Stuffed Cannelloni (ricotta, fontina, parmesan and asiago) with a bolognese sauce, and the very tasty Spinach Gnocchi swimming in a creamy Parmesan sauce. Fans of anything cooked with wine, we really enjoyed the tender Chicken Madeira with Portobello mushrooms in a rich wine sauce, and served with mashed parsnip potatoes. With very little room left to squeeze any more food, we ended our repast with the new fall sweet, a Warm Poached Pear with vanilla ice cream and a caramel sauce. he KSC Up-Close: Launch Control Center (LCC) Tour, the second in Kennedy Space Center’s special 50th anniversary series of rare-access tours, takes visitors inside Firing Room 4, the one from which all 21 space shuttle launches since 2006 were controlled. Inside Firing Room 4, visitors will pass by the computer consoles at which engineers monitored the computerized launch control system’s thousands of system checks every minute leading up to launch. They’ll see the main launch countdown clock and many large video monitors on the walls, and enter the “bubble room,” with its wall of interior windows through which the Kennedy Space Center management team viewed all of the proceedings below. Schulz Museum opening on September 29 and running through December 31 at the Orange County Regional History Center in Orlando. Join Charlie Brown, Lucy, Snoopy, and the rest of the gang as they find themselves in trouble with the Environmental Protection Agency, try to plant French fries, and run into other misadventures with the world around them. Schulz, who created the Peanuts comic strip for nearly 50 years, was immensely curious, an avid reader, and took a keen interest in the latest research findings in a variety of fields. It is not a surprise that many of these findings and facts found their way into Schulz’s comic strip carefully interpreted through his characters’ unique, and sometimes wacky, understanding of their world. Kids of all ages will enjoy Schulz’s interpretation of the natural world

through more than 65 Peanuts comic strips as he shows how their choices impact the environment. About Peanuts The first Peanuts comic strip was run by seven newspapers on October 2, 1950. It was originally called “Li’l Folks,” but the United Feature Syndicate renamed it Peanuts, a title that Charles Schulz, artist and writer of the comic strip, never liked. The comic strip became known for its clever social commentary, and touched on topics such as the Vietnam War, gender and racial equality, and the environment. In 1952 the first Peanuts book collection was published. By 1958, Peanuts appeared in 355 newspapers in the U.S., and 40 newspapers in other countries. Maryland’s amazing city located on Chesapeake Bay has much to offer. I spent three days of intense sightseeing there and realize I barely scratched the surface.

History and hip blend together to make it attractive to everyone, with shops, restaurants, museums and boat cruises. A major seaport since the 1700s, you will find the Baltimore Maritime Museum here with four historic ships, including the USS Constellation — the only Civil War ship still floating today; the USCGC Taney, the last surviving warship of Pearl Harbor; USS Torsk submarine, completing over 10,000 dives; and the Lightship Chesapeake. It is fascinating to be able to climb aboard these ships and explore. Children are equally enthralled. The nearby Maryland Science Center features a planetarium, an IMAX theater and hands-on exhibits. Baltimore’s National Aquarium houses more than 16,000 creatures in their naturalistic habitats. You will see sharks, sea turtles, and dolphins as well as monkeys, sloths and puffins among all the species. learned what the city had at the Visitor’s Center, and now to see it, I chose the Baltimore Sightseeing Trolley 90 minute Tour for a good overview. Our affable guide, Bob Oliver, pointed out many different interesting spots and gave us some history about them. I made note of what I wanted to go back and explore in more depth later on.

&O Railroad may be known as a spot on the Monopoly game board, but it was a very important railroad in real life, and played a crucial part in the Civil War. I’m not going to go into a history lesson here (not that I am well versed enough to anyway) but if you visit Baltimore’s fascinating B&O (Baltimore & Ohio) Museum, you will learn everything you ever wanted to know about trains and the railroad’s history. The current exhibit is “The War Came By Train” and it continues through 2015. Commemorating the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War, the exhibit points out that between April 19, 1861 (The Baltimore Riot of 1861) and April 21, 1865 (Lincoln’s funeral train leaving Baltimore for Illinois), the B&O was a big part of the conflict. The B&O Roundhouse has the largest collection of railroad equipment in the world including eight locomotives and cars that served during the war, interpretive signage, video presentations, and life-size historic dioramas. On October 13-14, 2012, the B&O Railroad Museum will hold their annual Steam Days, this year focusing on Civil War period steam power and including a Civil War encampment. Passengers will be able to ride west to the Whistle Stop Gateway located near the Museum’s Restoration Facility where they will be able to leave the train and visit a Civil War camp and see the “William Mason” under steam. Built in 1856, the Mason is the only operating Civil War steam engine in the USA, and pulled President Lincoln’s inaugural train. In camp, members of the 20th Maine Volunteer Infantry, Company E and the 1st Maryland Volunteer Infantry will be on hand to talk about the life of Union soldiers during the war and will conduct demonstrations and military drills. Blacksmiths will also demonstrate their craftsmanship.

hen one visits Baltimore, one MUST visit Camden Yards, home to the Baltimore Orioles and some notable moments in baseball history. It was here, after all, that Cal Ripkin, Jr. broke Lou Gehrig’s record of 2,130 consecutive games played, and hit a home run. In the walking zone behind the bullpens you can find sculptures of retired jersey numbers and players—the most famous of which has to the “The Babe”, Babe Ruth, a native Baltimorean. If you are a diehard Ruth fan, just follow the 60 painted baseballs from his statue, and it will take you to the Babe Ruth Birthplace Museum. A few blocks from the stadium is the Sports Legends Museum where you can review the careers of Maryland sports figures from yesterday’s Johnny Unitas up to today’s Michael Phelps.

oly heart failure, Batman!” One of my favorite Baltimore stops was Geppi’s Entertainment Museum, a really fun, cool assemblage of pop culture, adjacent to Camden Yards. This is a “must see” for the comic book/action hero fan, as well as nostalgia for games and artifacts from the past (starting from the 17th century to today.) It includes such items as comic books, movie posters, toys, buttons, badges, cereal boxes, trading cards, dolls, figurines, video games and on and on, filling up 16,000 square feet. What makes this astonishing assemblage even more amazing is that it is the collection of one man — Stephen A. Geppi, President and CEO of Diamond Comics Distributors. He started collecting comic books in 1972, and never looked back. Considering the current value of some of these old comics, his collection is priceless. On display is the 1938 Action comic where Superman makes his first appearance (worth at least $1M), and the Detective comic where Batman first appears, among many, many more. I learned that when Superman first “arrived” he didn’t fly, he leapt — as in “...able to leap tall buildings in a single bound.” He didn’t fly until Superman became a radio show in 1940. AND, our favorite couple Blondie and Dagwood had an interesting start. Seems that Blondie Boopadoop was a flapper, and Dagwood was the heir to the Bumstead fortune. Dagwood’s parents forbid him to marry her, so he gave up his inheritance for love, marrying Blondie in 1933. Their marriage has lasted for 79 years. Who knew?! For a diehard comic book fan, Geppi’s alone is reason enough to visit Baltimore. (They also have a pretty good gift shop!)

or history buffs, there are wonderful free guided and self-guided walking and driving tours of historic areas, that can be picked up at the visitor’s center. Baltimore played an important role in American history, and much of it has been preserved for future generations.

At the Civil War Museum where you can learn about Baltimore’s pivotal involvement in the war, from the first bloodshed to the bloodiest single day battle at Antietam to the story of Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad.

The Heritage Walk takes you through Little Italy to the the East Coast’s largest museum of AfricanAmerican heritage, the Reginald F. Lewis Museum, which strives to collect, preserve, document and exhibit the contributions of African-American Marylanders from the state’s earliest history to the present and the future. The museum’s permanent exhibition includes three beautifully displayed galleries: Things Hold Lines Connect, Building Maryland, Building America and The Strength of the Mind.

Next door is the house where the Star-Spangled Banner was sewn. There is dispute about whether Betsy Ross sewed the first American flag, but none about whether Mary Pickersgill sewed the Star Spangled Banner that flew over Ft. McHenry and inspired Francis Scott Key to pen the National Anthem. The original flag (now in the Smithsonian as one of it’s most treasured artifacts) originally measured 30 X 42 feet, and it’s current size is 30 X 34 feet. She was assisted in her task by four other people. Her home (now called the Star Spangled Banner Flag House) is set as it was in 1812, and affords a glimpse into the life of the early 19th century Baltimore resident.

t’s only a few miles to Ft. McHenry to see where the Star Spangled Banner flew during the 1814 Battle of Baltimore. Built around 1798, the fort has played part in all wars up to WWII in some capacity. Today it looks as it did during the Civil War. Cannons (and there are a lot of them) are all original. A self-guided tour of the fort takes one to two hours, and you will see how the soldiers lived and worked during the different eras. On certain days you can catch the Fort McHenry Guard performing drill, musket and artillery demonstrations.

altimore dining proved to be a treat as well. There are so many diverse restaurants, but when in Maryland you have to sample what it is most famous for - crab cakes. Woodberry Kitchen was recommended, and it didn’t disappoint. The Tilghman Island Crab Cake was heavenly. Woodberry has an open kitchen and a woodburning oven, and they use local organic produce, sustainable fish & shellfish.

Located in the historic Federal Hill area, Spoons Cafe is the popular place to go for breakfast, with a full menu of benedicts, omlettes, frittatas — eggs prepared every which way, and served by a friendly staff. They are also open for lunch and dinner.

B&O Brasserie is located in the old B&O Railway Headquarters, and the restaurant utilized the building’s original Beaux-Arts architecture, cleverly incorporating touches from old RR dining cars into chairs and table lamps. The menu is modern American cuisine, and the fare delicious. My Adobo Braised Pork Shank with smoked black bean risotto and pickled pear-arugula was succulent and tender.

The Lebanese Taverna is a bright Morocco/modern restaurant that has been family owned for 33 years, and is within walking distance from the Inner Harbor. I sampled some new tastes here, and all were successful. Hummus and unique flatbreads started the meal, and my entree was a savory mixed dish of kafta, lamb and chicken with grilled vegetables. There were a lot of vegetarian choices as well as a gluten-free menu.

In the historic Fells Point district, is Alexander’s Tavern, a lively place with some unique tavern fare. Macaroni and cheese pizza? Or how about for breakfast French Toast stuffed with cookie dough? I know you’re saying “Oh no you dit’n” but I did. And it was delicious. And I am not sorry. I was on vacation. It doesn’t count.

As I said earlier, I merely scratched the surface of what there is to see and do in Baltimore, which begs for a return visit. I will definitely return, and I might even have some more cookie dough French toast. Really.

Art Lines CONTEMPORARY ART GLASS Through October 14

ith its intense sunlight and coastal views, Florida is the ideal home for contemporary glass. The region and the entire state have particularly strong examples of studio and contemporary glass in both private and public collections. Global + Local: Studio and Contemporary Glass on Florida’s West Coast features more than 100 works from approximately 17 collections, including the Museum’s own. This exhibition continues through Sunday, October 14 Recent MFA acquisitions of major works by Therman Statom and Michael Glancy are high points, as well as objects by internationally renowned artists Harvey Littleton, Lino Tagliapietra, Dale Chihuly, Richard Ritter, William Morris, Sonja Blomdahl, Dante Marioni, Toots Zinsky, and Yoichi Ohira. Exceptional works by area artists Duncan McClellan, Owen Pach, and Chuck Boux also enhance the exhibition. Mr. McClellan’s new studio/gallery in downtown St. Petersburg is attracting artists from around the globe. The Chihuly Collection and the Hot Shop at The Morean Arts Center and the Zen Glass Studio likewise reflect the city’s emergence as a center for the display and creation of glass art. The MFA, The Chihuly Collection presented by The Morean Arts Center, and The

Morean Glass Studio and Hot Shop will offer one free child six to 18 years old with each paid adult through August 31, 2012. These art attractions are close to each other in downtown St. Petersburg. THE MAN, THE IMAGE & THE WORLD: Henri Cartier-Bresson, A Retrospective - Oct 6 Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908– 2004) was one of the leading photographers of the 20th century. His work not only exerted a major influence on photography but also helped his profession achieve a new status. From his first works of the 1930s that stand out for their composition, the theatrical nature of the images and the selection of details, Cartier-Bresson succeeded in recording important moments with his camera. His 1952 book, Images a la Sauvette (The Decisive Moment), introduced his ideas about creating images that combined story, action and emotion. Entire stories are often condensed into a single image, the so-called “decisive moment.” The photographer once said that photography was “putting one’s head, one’s heart and one’s eye on

the same axis.” Travel was a key element in Cartier-Bresson’s life and his work. Following trips to Mexico, the artist was sent on large-scale global reporting assignments to the United States, the Soviet Union, China, India, Bali and Indonesia. His work provided early and probing views behind the Iron Curtain and into the highly hidden cultures in Southeast Asia and the Indian Sub-continent. His work is not only a benchmark for photojournalism in the 20th century but also for the ethics of photography. Along with friends such as Robert Capa, Cartier-Bresson founded Magnum Pictures in 1947. Operating in Paris and New York City, this organization of photojournalists successfully changed the manner in which photojournalists were treated and recognized by printed sources. The Man, the Image & the World. Henri Cartier-Bresson, A Retrospective includes over 330 photographs, films and important publications. Intergalactic, Beam Me Up, My Favorite Martian and Blast Off will present an array of work gathered to reflect a broad, though singular theme. In Intergalactic, artists from around the world take us out of this world. Extraterrestrials, black holes, lunar landscapes, celestial bodies. The sky’s not the limit. Houston-based video and photographic team Hillerbrand & Magsamen share contemporary interpretations of parenthood and family. Life as we do not know it in Beam Me Up. Therefore, when the world leaders at a 2009 United Nations General Assembly meeting were intercepted by an enterprising portrait photographer named Platon Antoniou, they must have worried. Mid Century Cookie jars recall Nursery Rhymes

he cookie jar held a place of honor in American kitchens in the 1950s and 1960s when it was part of the overall home décor as well as an important piece of serving ware. Cookie jars were of good size in order to hold many cookies for America’s growing families in the years following World War II. The fact that these vintage collectibles were positioned in “the front lines” (a.k.a., on the kitchen countertop) of busy post-war American kitchens makes their condition a vital trait when assessing their appraised value on the collectibles market. Chips, cracks, and scratches to the surface decoration are key factors when evaluating these vintage cookie jars.

Some examples of the market for good quality cookie jars in good condition from the mid 1900s include a Brush Pottery company cookie jar in the shape of a cow resembling the famous Borden milk mascot named Elsie from circa 1945-50 is worth $500. McCoy’s Aunt Jemima cookie jar sold for $325, a Robinson-Ransbottom Pottery firm’s Oscar cookie jar brought $500, and the popular Little Red Riding Hood cookie jar by Hull commanded $1,500 recently. Nursery rhyme Little Old Woman who lived in characters were among a Shoe cookie jar worth $300. the most common types of cookie jars such as Humpty Dumpty, the Little Old Woman who lived in a Shoe, and Puss n Boots, to name a few. It makes perfect sense that nursery rhymes would be the featured theme for cookie jars as the characters were recognizable to youngsters.

The American baby boom sparked cookie jar production as Americans were having more babies and eating more cookies during the late 1940s and 1950s. Over the decades, cookie jars featured popular characters and cultural icons such as Felix the Cat, Howdy Doody, Mickey Mouse, Snow White, World War II American G. I.s, and Betty Boop, to name a few. The variety of cookie jars and the opportunity to collect so many different examples may contribute to the fact that many collectors just can’t stop collecting these cherished objects from childhood.

In the late 1980s, after the death of Pop artist Andy Warhol, the cookie jar market enjoyed a market spike. Warhol was an enthusiastic collector of cookie jars and viewed them as important objects of American culture. His famous estate auction brought cookie jar collecting to the forefront and put the sweet collectibles on the map. Warhol’s collection of hundreds of vintage cookie jars brought more than $250,000 at auction. The Warhol auction attracted new collectors to amass American cookie jars. Today, collectors remain committed to the cookie jar category and amass large numbers of jars from Maine to California.

With cookie jars as with cookies, it’s difficult to have just one. I have reviewed cookie jar collections all over the United States and most are assembled in large numbers of cookie jars dating from the 1950s with values for the collections reaching into the $10,000 to $20,000 range.

Hillsborough County Animal Services Presents: Cats, Bats & Bones - Oct 20 This day of Halloween fun and pet adoption runs from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the County shelter located at 440 N. Kingfish Action Abounds in Egmont Ship Channel Main Artery Accessing Tampa Bay Loaded with Baitfish and Predators

’ve been kingfishing all my life and I’ve caught these fish in many different areas and scenarios. However, on Florida’s Central Gulf Coast, there’s one place I can always count on – the Egmont ship channel. The main navigational channel accessing Tampa Bay, “The Ditch,” as some call it, is a natural fish attractor because the current coming in and out of the bay carries loads of baitfish. Moreover, the cut of the channel creates tide rips and offers hiding places for those baitfish. Kingfish also like the channel because they can chase baitfish up from the depths and onto the shallow edges. There’s a reason they call it a food funnel and kingfish take full advantage of the feeding opportunities. Follow these points to better kingfish action: The Right Baits - The most common channel baitfish include cigar minnows, Spanish sardines, threadfin herring, scaled sardines and blue runners. You can catch live baits around the marker chains or around bait schools in the channel using Sabiki rigs. Drop the sabikis down by the markers or cast into the dimpling bait schools on top, and use whatever bait you catch. Handy with Hardware - Stinger rigs are essential for preventing cutoffs. I build mine with a 2/0 short shank live bait hook on the front and

a No, 4 treble trailer and I nose-hook the bait. Twenty-pound monofilament is a good all-around choice for line on a conventional or spinning reel that can hold at least 250 yards. Braided line can work but the no-stretch factor might yank the hook out of a king’s mouth on the typical slashing strike. A medium to light tip on the rod will help improve your hook-up/

catch ratio for the same reason. The Hot Zone - The floating channel markers and their anchor chains are particularly attractive, so always check out the cans. Some of the best king areas start with markers 9-10 and continue all the way out to “The Whistler” – the last buoy going west. Trolling Tactics - Once you reach your area, put out three or four baits at varying distances behind the boat and troll as slowly as your boat will go – about 1-2 mph on the GPS is right where you want to be. is to make the swimming baits look as natural as possible. Wind and tide will affect your trolling speed and you might have to bump up your rpm’s when going into the wind and tide to reach the optimal speed. Going down wind and down tide, use a controlled power drift by bumping your motor(s) in and out of gear. Follow the Food - Baitfish schools always attract kingfish, so watch for surface activity and monitor your depth recorder for pods below. Once you find the bait, slow troll around the perimeter because that’s where the kings will attack. Near the markers, use a figure-8 pattern and cross the channel to troll around each buoy. If you find a particular buoy that is holding bait and kings, concentrate your efforts there. If the markers you’re fishing fail to produce, troll out to the next set. Often you’ll find bait and kings in between the markers. When word of a hot Egmont bite gets out, the ditch it can get crowded. Be courteous and give each boat ample space when trolling. There’s plenty of fish, so cooperate with others and they’ll return the favor when you hook your big kingfish.
