Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition at the Mahaffey - thru March 3, 2012 During the 100th anniversary year of the Ship’s sinking, the Mahaffey presents Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition. The Centennial exhibition will feature artifacts never before seen in the Tampa Bay area and will run through March 3, 2013. Visitors to the highly anticipated blockbuster exhibit will receive a replica boarding pass granting them permission to “board” the White Star Line’s R.M.S. Titanic, and from there the journey begins. The galleries focus on the legendary Titanic’s compelling human stories as best told through authentic artifacts recovered from the ocean floor and extensive room re-creations. From china etched with the logo of the elite White Star Line, to pieces of the Ship itself, these and many other authentic objects offer haunting, emotional connections to lives abruptly ended or forever altered. The series of galleries on the second floor of The Mahaffey begin with Construction before moving on to Passenger, Iceberg, Seabed and Memorial galleries with additional areas for Iceberg warnings and even Lifeboat Loading Profiles – all extensively covered by an audio tour to bring the Titanic story to life. On April 15, 1912, Titanic, the world’s largest ocean liner, sank after colliding with an iceberg just five days into its highly anticipated maiden voyage. This disaster claimed more than 1,500 lives and shook the world’s confidence in the infallibility of modern technology. More than 5,500 authentic artifacts, including delicate porcelain dishes and a 17-ton section of the hull, have been recovered on research expeditions since the Ship’s discovery in 1985. The exhibition will feature 200 of these artifacts and tell the story behind the legendary Titanic’s short journey from construction and destruction, to eventual recovery. www.RMSTitanic.net

Cirque Du Soleil’s Big Top Production in St. Petersburg Photos by Joel N. Cocker irque du Soleil is stunning St Petersburg with its big top production, KOOZA. The critically-acCKOOZA claimed show runs for a limited engagement under the white Big Top at Tropicana Field. is a return to the origins of Cirque du Soleil that combines two circus traditions – acrobatic performance and the art of clowning. The show highlights the physical demands of human performance in all its splendor and fragility, presented in a colorful mélange that emphasizes bold slapstick humor. KOOZA is about human connection and the world of duality, good and bad,” Writer/Director David Shiner said. “The tone is fun and funny, light and open. The show doesn’t take itself too seriously, but it’s very much about ideas, too. As it evolves we are exploring concepts such as fear, identity, recognition and power.” The show starts with The Trickster bursting onto the scene like a jack-in-a-box right in front of The Innocent, and that is just the first of many surprises to follow. The Innocent’s journey brings him into contact with comic characters such as the King, the Heimloss, the Pickpocket, the Obnoxious Tourist and his Bad Dog. KOOZA is set in an electrifying and exotic visual world full of surprises, thrills, chills, audacity and total involvement. The show presents an unprecedented approach to the High Wire and a breathtaking Wheel of Death – an act that Cirque du Soleil has never before presented under the big top. Kooza will run through Dec 16. For more information about Cirque du Soleil, visit cirquedusoleil.com

Encompassing a rundown hotel, an old toy store, a blues bar, a Gothic cathedral, and their respective inhabitants all intertwined during a single enchanted Christmas Eve in New York City, this year’s show is sure to start any TSO fan’s holiday season off right. “The Lost Christmas Eve” will be performed in its entirety and will feature the hit single, “Wizards in Winter”, as well as longtime crowd favorites, “Christmas Nights in Blue” and “Siberian Sleigh Ride.” It will be followed by brand new songs from TSO’s Fall EP release from Lava/Republic, “Dreams of Fireflies (On a Christmas Night)”, classics from TSO’s debut album, “Christmas Eve & Other Stories” and the rest of the heralded catalogue of rock operas. TSO founder Paul O’Neill discusses the band’s ambitious undertaking: “This is an exciting year for the band and something we’ve been planning for years. ‘The Lost Christmas Eve’ has always been a personal favorite of mine. To debut this rock opera live marks a new and exciting chapter in TSO’s Rock Theater evolution.” Since their debut in 1996, TSO has defied the rules of an ever-changing music industry. Year after year, TSO has ranked in the Top 10 for both gross revenues and attendance (according to Pollstar magazine) by playing live to over one million fans annually. Since their inception, TSO has sold in excess of 8.5 million albums and performed to more than 9 million fans in 150+ cities worldwide. The band’s rock operas have cemented them as a leader in Rock Theater, being regarded as a mix of The Who’s “Tommy”, Andrew Lloyd Weber’s musicals, and Pink Floyd’s expansive light show. www.TampaBayTimesForum.com

CHICK COREA & GARY BURTON Hot House

P

ianist Chick Corea and vibraphonist Gary Burton’s first musical encounter took place at a jazz festival in Germany in 1972, when they performed together in a spurof-the-moment encore. The results were so satisfying not only to the audience but to the artists themselves that the two musicians reconvened in a recording studio a couple months later to record the intricate yet highly melodic Crystal Silence, their first of several collaborative studio projects. The impromptu encounter in Germany marked the beginning of a musical partnership that has lasted for four decades not only on the performance stage but also over the course of seven recordings. This highly creative and prolific team celebrates forty years of great jazz with the release of Hot House, a collection of ten songs that draws from the work of some of their favorite composers from the 1940s through the 1960s. The source material is eclectic, and the set is seamless and undeniably rich. www.chickcorea.com

t age 16, Kevin Coelho is a teenage musical phenom, and his debut album, “Funkengruven – The Joy of Driving a B3,” was produced by a renowned master of the B3: Tony Monaco on Summit Records. Monaco observes “Kevin has studied an enormous amount and has a great grasp of what and how he wants to play. He really knows how to play that left-hand bass, which is the key to driving the music.” Coelho started studying piano at age 6 and began his jazz and organ studies at age 11. He describes his “Funkengruven” title tune as “a riff blues over a set of non-standard changes, something that’s funky and grooving but also swings. www.kevincoelho.com/ RICH OSBORN - Giving Voice: Guitar Explorations www.devingraymusic.com Rich Osborn’s debut solo album of guitar instrumentals is in “free raga style”. ROMAIN COLLIN - The Calling www.romaincollin.com French-born pianist Romain Collin introduces an evocatively textured, melodically luxuriant sound on his new Palmetto album The Calling. WAYLON JENNINGS Goin’ Down Rockin’ - The Last Recordings of Waylon Jennings www.saguaroroad.com/ A new album from outlaw country legend Waylon Jennings will be released this September, filled with recordings the icon made during the last few years before his death in 2002. Jennings spent hours in a recording studio with his longtime accompanist, Robby Turner and together they laid down twelve tracks using just Waylon’s guitar and vocals and Turner’s bass. All songs were personally selected by the country star, ones that resonated in a deeply personal way and reflected his state of mind, his passions, and important statements he wanted to make about his life. The duo planned out the future instrumentation that would be added to the tracks, but Jennings was never able to complete them. Ten years after his passing, Turner returned to the recordings, finishing each song to honor Waylon’s vision of what would turn out to be his very last album. Bringing in musicians who had long worked with Waylon, such as Reggie Young, Richie Albright and tour mate Tony Joe White, Turner painstakingly created the album that Waylon set out to make. No one has ever heard these performances before; they are Waylon’s last gift to his fans.

Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza Authentic NY Pizza in South Tampa Story and photos by Melissa Wolcott Martino

I

t’s hard to believe that the Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza Restaurant in South Tampa is part of a chain (number 33 and still growing), as it has such a casual neighborhood feel, and the pizza’s ingredients are so very fresh. It was founded in 2002 by restauranteur Anthony Bruno in Ft. Lauderdale when he could not find the wonderful authentic pizza he enjoyed as a young man in Brooklyn. It was time to introduce the taste of coal-fired pizza to Floridians. With the smashing success of his pizza concept, he expanded throughout Florida, and into Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey, New York and Connecticut. Anthony’s uses coal-burning ovens to create their trademark “well done pizza.” The smoke free anthracite coal-burning ovens are set to 800° to create their perfect pies. The exceptional taste comes from the high quality ingredients and clever creations, such as a pizza made with roasted cauliflower, olive oil, garlic, romano and mozzarella cheese, topped off with bread crumbs. In addition to pizza, the restaurant features menu items such as coal-oven-roasted chicken wings with caramelized onions, pork ribs with vinegar peppers, homestyle meatballs made from founder Anthony Bruno’s family recipe, and Eggplant Marino (named for ACFP partner and Hall of Fame football legend Dan Marino). Anthony’s newest restaurant is located at 1901 South Dale Mabry Highway in South Tampa. Other Tampa Bay area locations include 1912 W. Brandon Blvd. in Brandon, 2532 McMullen Booth Road in the Northwood Shopping Center in Clearwater and 13020 N. Dale Mabry Highway in the Carrollwood Village Shoppes in North Tampa. In addition to dining in, patrons can order take out by calling (813) 258-COAL (2625). For more information, visit www.anthonyscoalfiredpizza.com/

Reseal Your Wine!

CapaBunga is a reusable silicone cap that reseals a bottle of wine after you remove the cork. It’s made to resemble

the bungs used to seal barrels during winemaking. Once you remove the cork and re-seal the bottle with a CapaBunga, it is liquid tight and the bottle can rest on its side or even upside down without leaking. No more jamming the cork back in the bottle, no more rearranging the fridge to fit an open bottle in the door. The open bottle can also be stored on its side in the fridge or on a wine rack.

CapaBunga was invented by two winery owners in Northern California’s Wine Country for use on their own wine, Rua. The caps come with fun sayings like “I earned it”, “Me Time” and ”Weeknights Stop Here”, and will fit virtually any bottle. For more information, please visit www.capabunga.com

or the last 4000 years Garlic has been both cherished and reviled, sought for its healing powers and shunned for its pungent after effects. From miracle drug to vampire repellent, garlic has had an important place in many aspects of human history. The allicin in raw, crushed garlic has been shown to kill 23 types of bacteria, including salmonella and staphylococcus. Heated garlic gives off another compound, diallyldisulphide-oxide, which has been shown to lower serum cholesterol by preventing clotting in the arteries. Vitamins in garlic, such as A, B, and C, stimulate the body to fight carcinogens and get rid of toxins, and may even aid in preventing certain types of cancer, such as stomach cancer. Garlic’s sulfur compounds can regulate blood sugar metabolism, stimulate and detoxify the liver, and stimulate the blood circulation and the nervous system. Now that we know the health benefits of garlic, lets talk about what it does for flavoring our food — Wonders! There are many ways to prepare garlic, but no one has prepared it for the cook as well as Garlic Gold. Garlic Gold is a delicious combination of organic toasted garlic pieces and organic extra-virgin olive oil. It adds unique flavor and crunchy texture to anything from vegetables to chicken, shrimp or beef. It’s dynamite in salad dressing and the nuggets are especially tasty as crouton replacements or sprinkled atop a split loaf of crusty bread, slathered in butter - the ultimate in garlic bread. Carmel Cafe & Wine Bar Hyde Park’s Newest Dining Spot Story and photos by Melissa Wolcott Martino and Al Martino

F

or the uninitiated, Carmel Cafe & Wine Bar is a little slice of the California coast plunked down in Florida. If you look out the restaurant’s window, you expect to see cliffside cypress trees leaning out over the ocean. But this is Florida, so no cliffs. However, the interior decor has a definitely CA feel as does the eclectic modern Mediterranean style cuisine. Also, a bit of Silicon Valley is present with the clever use of iPads as menus! All the menu items are beautifully photographed with complete descriptions and (very reasonable) prices. You can order your courses as you go along, or all at once. The iPads are easy to use, and also very intuitive. If you have a restless child (or internet-addicted significant other) you can even troll the internet with it. What sets this menu apart from the same-old same-old is the creative use of their fresh ingredients. The new fall offerings include recipes you probably haven’t experienced in other area restaurants. Our recent menu sampling at the new Carmel Cafe in Hyde Park was a real taste bud treat.

Danish Baked Brie with toasted walnuts, dried cranberries and puff pastry.

Seasonal Flatbread with caramelized pear, blue cheese and roasted red pepper.

Carmel Cafe has concocted their own seasonal cocktails, and one is sure to please you. We tried the Italian Old Fashioned with Buffalo Trace Kentucky bourbon, peach jam, and amarena cherry, and the Watermelon Granita - a hibiscus-infused watermelon margarita, which was our favorite. The Cafe’s Mezze Platter starter dish is a trip to the Med with edamame hummus, Muhammarra and goat cheese stuffed pepperdews, fried feta cheese, marinated artichoke hearts, sundried tomatoes and grilled pita. The flavorful Madeira Dates stuffed with goat cheese and Serrano ham was an unexpected menu item. Another great choice was the Danish Baked Brie with toasted walnuts, dried cranberries and puff pastry. Not to be missed is one of Carmel’s wonderful flatbreads. We had the Seasonal Flatbread with caramelized pear, blue cheese and roasted red pepper, which was crispy and full of fall flavors. Seafood lovers will want to try the Seafood Medley with scallops, shrimp, calamari, mussels, chorizo, Israeli couscous, olives and roasted peppers. The Roasted veggie of the evening was one of our particular favorites - Brussels Sprouts with bacon. 58

Two new pastas are delightful - the Four Cheese Stuffed Cannelloni (ricotta, fontina, parmesan and asiago) with a bolognese sauce, and the very tasty Spinach Gnocchi swimming in a creamy Parmesan sauce. Fans of anything cooked with wine, we really enjoyed the tender Chicken Madeira with Portobello mushrooms in a rich wine sauce, and served with mashed parsnip potatoes. With very little room left to squeeze any more food, we ended our repast with the new fall sweet, a Warm Poached Pear with vanilla ice cream and a caramel sauce. The lovely items we enjoyed are just a small selection of the Cafe’s full menu, bursting with interesting, clever, and above all, delicious fare. The restaurant is located at 3601 W. Swann Ave., Tampa. If you can’t make it to Hyde Park, there are three other Carmel Cafe locations to choose from: Countryside, Carrollwood, and Sarasota. Please visit the website for more information, plus you can view their full menu. www.carmelcafe.com For more photos of Carmel Cafe, please visit Accent On Tampa Bay’s photo gallery. www.ampubs.smugmug.com/

ow many suns? Is the Earth flat? Explore the “web of life” through the Peanuts comic strip, didactic materials, and fun interactives in the Peanuts…Naturally exhibition from the Charles M. Schulz Museum opening on September 29 and running through December 31 at the Orange County Regional History Center in Orlando. Join Charlie Brown, Lucy, Snoopy, and the rest of the gang as they find themselves in trouble with the Environmental Protection Agency, try to plant French fries, and run into other misadventures with the world around them. Schulz, who created the Peanuts comic strip for nearly 50 years, was immensely curious, an avid reader, and took a keen interest in the latest research findings in a variety of fields. It is not a surprise that many of these findings and facts found their way into Schulz’s comic strip carefully interpreted through his characters’ unique, and sometimes wacky, understanding of their world. Kids of all ages will enjoy Schulz’s interpretation of the natural world

through more than 65 Peanuts comic strips as he shows how their choices impact the environment. About Peanuts The first Peanuts comic strip was run by seven newspapers on October 2, 1950. It was originally called “Li’l Folks,” but the United Feature Syndicate renamed it Peanuts, a title that Charles Schulz, artist and writer of the comic strip, never liked. The comic strip became known for its clever social commentary, and touched on topics such as the Vietnam War, gender and racial equality, and the environment. In 1952 the first Peanuts book collection was published. By 1958, Peanuts appeared in 355 newspapers in the U.S., and 40 newspapers in other countries. Peanuts also appeared in other forms throughout the years, including award-winning TV specials and stage musicals. The final Peanuts strip ran on February 13, 2000. C

ities’ visitors bureaus like to tout that they have “everything” for the resident and tourist, which is not always the case. Baltimore, however, does have everything. Maryland’s amazing city located on Chesapeake Bay has much to offer. I spent three days of intense sightseeing there and realize I barely scratched the surface.

OT say can you see b early light, What we hailed at the t gleaming, Whose b and bright stars perilous fight, O’er we watched, were streaming? And red glare, the bom he Fairfield Inn & Suites in Baltimore’s Downtown Inner Harbor is the ideal place to call home while visiting the city. The 3-year old eco-friendly hotel is centrally located on the route of the Baltimore Heritage Walk which connects four neighborhoods and four centuries’ worth of historic sites and museums that includes the Inner Harbor, Little Italy, Historic Jonestown, and City Center. Although the red brick hotel is new, it was created to fit in with it’s historic location. Brick walls with indirect lighting and comfy chairs adorn the inviting lobby, and iconic Baltimore photos line the walls leading to elevators and guest rooms. The hotel has all the ameni-

ties one could wish for, with a complimentary breakfast, fitness room, restaurant, and all the modern touches in the guest rooms.

I

always start my trip at a city’s visitor’s center, where you can find out all about the area and what it has to offer. Baltimore’s Visitor Center is conveniently located right in the Inner Harbor which is the most visited section of the city.

B

altimore’s Inner Harbor is famous for “getting it right” on how best to utilize a city’s waterfront. History and hip blend together to make it attractive to everyone, with shops, restaurants, museums and boat cruises. A major seaport since the 1700s, you will find the Baltimore Maritime Museum here with four historic ships, including the USS Constellation — the only Civil War ship still floating today; the USCGC Taney, the last surviving warship of Pearl Harbor; USS Torsk submarine, completing over 10,000 dives; and the Lightship Chesapeake. It is fascinating to be able to climb aboard these ships and explore. Children are equally enthralled. The nearby Maryland Science Center features a planetarium, an IMAX theater and hands-on exhibits. Baltimore’s National Aquarium houses more than 16,000 creatures in their naturalistic habitats. You will see sharks, sea turtles, and dolphins as well as monkeys, sloths and puffins among all the species. Don’t miss the amazing Jelly fish exhibit — I guarantee you’ll see creatures you didn’t know existed. www.AccentOnTampaBay.com

learned what the city had at the Visitor’s Center, and now to see it, I chose the Baltimore Sightseeing Trolley 90 minute Tour for a good overview. Our affable guide, Bob Oliver, pointed out many different interesting spots and gave us some history about them. I made note of what I wanted to go back and explore in more depth later on.

&O Railroad may be known as a spot on the Monopoly game board, but it was a very important railroad in real life, and played a crucial part in the Civil War. I’m not going to go into a history lesson here (not that I am well versed enough to anyway) but if you visit Baltimore’s fascinating B&O (Baltimore & Ohio) Museum, you will learn everything you ever wanted to know about trains and the railroad’s history. The current exhibit is “The War Came By Train” and it continues through 2015. Commemorating the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War, the exhibit points out that between April 19, 1861 (The Baltimore Riot of 1861) and April 21, 1865 (Lincoln’s funeral train leaving Baltimore for Illinois), the B&O was a big part of the conflict. The B&O Roundhouse has the largest collection of railroad equipment in the world including eight locomotives and cars that served during the war, interpretive signage, video presentations, and life-size historic dioramas. On October 13-14, 2012, the B&O Railroad Museum will hold their annual Steam Days, this year focusing on Civil War period steam power and including a Civil War encampment. Passengers will be able to ride west to the Whistle Stop Gateway located near the Museum’s Restoration Facility where they will be able to leave the train and visit a Civil War camp and see the “William Mason” under steam. Built in 1856, the Mason is the only operating Civil War steam engine in the USA, and pulled President Lincoln’s inaugural train. In camp, members of the 20th Maine Volunteer Infantry, Company E and the 1st Maryland Volunteer Infantry will be on hand to talk about the life of Union soldiers during the war and will conduct demonstrations and military drills. Blacksmiths will also demonstrate their craftsmanship.

hen one visits Baltimore, one MUST visit Camden Yards, home to the Baltimore Orioles and some notable moments in baseball history. It was here, after all, that Cal Ripkin, Jr. broke Lou Gehrig’s record of 2,130 consecutive games played, and hit a home run. In the walking zone behind the bullpens you can find sculptures of retired jersey numbers and players—the most famous of which has to the “The Babe”, Babe Ruth, a native Baltimorean. If you are a diehard Ruth fan, just follow the 60 painted baseballs from his statue, and it will take you to the Babe Ruth Birthplace Museum. A few blocks from the stadium is the Sports Legends Museum where you can review the careers of Maryland sports figures from yesterday’s Johnny Unitas up to today’s Michael Phelps.

“H

oly heart failure, Batman!” One of my favorite Baltimore stops was Geppi’s Entertainment Museum, a really fun, cool assemblage of pop culture, adjacent to Camden Yards. This is a “must see” for the comic book/action hero fan, as well as nostalgia for games and artifacts from the past (starting from the 17th century to today.) It includes such items as comic books, movie posters, toys, buttons, badges, cereal boxes, trading cards, dolls, figurines, video games and on and on, filling up 16,000 square feet. What makes this astonishing assemblage even more amazing is that it is the collection of one man — Stephen A. Geppi, President and CEO of Diamond Comics Distributors. He started collecting comic books in 1972, and never looked back. Considering the current value of some of these old comics, his collection is priceless. On display is the 1938 Action comic where Superman makes his first appearance (worth at least $1M), and the Detective comic where Batman first appears, among many, many more. I learned that when Superman first “arrived” he didn’t fly, he leapt — as in “...able to leap tall buildings in a single bound.” He didn’t fly until Superman became a radio show in 1940. AND, our favorite couple Blondie and Dagwood had an interesting start. Seems that Blondie Boopadoop was a flapper, and Dagwood was the heir to the Bumstead fortune. Dagwood’s parents forbid him to marry her, so he gave up his inheritance for love, marrying Blondie in 1933. Their marriage has lasted for 79 years. Who knew?! For a diehard comic book fan, Geppi’s alone is reason enough to visit Baltimore. (They also have a pretty good gift shop!)

or history buffs, there are wonderful free guided and self-guided walking and driving tours of historic areas, that can be picked up at the visitor’s center. Baltimore played an important role in American history, and much of it has been preserved for future generations.

At the Civil War Museum where you can learn about Baltimore’s pivotal involvement in the war, from the first bloodshed to the bloodiest single day battle at Antietam to the story of Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad.

The Heritage Walk takes you through Little Italy to the the East Coast’s largest museum of AfricanAmerican heritage, the Reginald F. Lewis Museum, which strives to collect, preserve, document and exhibit the contributions of African-American Marylanders from the state’s earliest history to the present and the future. The museum’s permanent exhibition includes three beautifully displayed galleries: Things Hold Lines Connect, Building Maryland, Building America and The Strength of the Mind.

Next door is the house where the Star-Spangled Banner was sewn. There is dispute about whether Betsy Ross sewed the first American flag, but none about whether Mary Pickersgill sewed the Star Spangled Banner that flew over Ft. McHenry and inspired Francis Scott Key to pen the National Anthem. The original flag (now in the Smithsonian as one of it’s most treasured artifacts) originally measured 30 X 42 feet, and it’s current size is 30 X 34 feet. She was assisted in her task by four other people. Her home (now called the Star Spangled Banner Flag House) is set as it was in 1812, and affords a glimpse into the life of the early 19th century Baltimore resident.

I

t’s only a few miles to Ft. McHenry to see where the Star Spangled Banner flew during the 1814 Battle of Baltimore. Built around 1798, the fort has played part in all wars up to WWII in some capacity. Today it looks as it did during the Civil War. Cannons (and there are a lot of them) are all original. A self-guided tour of the fort takes one to two hours, and you will see how the soldiers lived and worked during the different eras. On certain days you can catch the Fort McHenry Guard performing drill, musket and artillery demonstrations.

altimore dining proved to be a treat as well. There are so many diverse restaurants, but when in Maryland you have to sample what it is most famous for - crab cakes. Woodberry Kitchen was recommended, and it didn’t disappoint. The Tilghman Island Crab Cake was heavenly. Woodberry has an open kitchen and a woodburning oven, and they use local organic produce, sustainable fish & shellfish.

Located in the historic Federal Hill area, Spoons Cafe is the popular place to go for breakfast, with a full menu of benedicts, omlettes, frittatas — eggs prepared every which way, and served by a friendly staff. They are also open for lunch and dinner.

B&O Brasserie is located in the old B&O Railway Headquarters, and the restaurant utilized the building’s original Beaux-Arts architecture, cleverly incorporating touches from old RR dining cars into chairs and table lamps. The menu is modern American cuisine, and the fare delicious. My Adobo Braised Pork Shank with smoked black bean risotto and pickled pear-arugula was succulent and tender.

The Lebanese Taverna is a bright Morocco/modern restaurant that has been family owned for 33 years, and is within walking distance from the Inner Harbor. I sampled some new tastes here, and all were successful. Hummus and unique flatbreads started the meal, and my entree was a savory mixed dish of kafta, lamb and chicken with grilled vegetables. There were a lot of vegetarian choices as well as a gluten-free menu.

In the historic Fells Point district, is Alexander’s Tavern, a lively place with some unique tavern fare. Macaroni and cheese pizza? Or how about for breakfast French Toast stuffed with cookie dough? I know you’re saying “Oh no you dit’n” but I did. And it was delicious. And I am not sorry. I was on vacation. It doesn’t count.

As I said earlier, I merely scratched the surface of what there is to see and do in Baltimore, which begs for a return visit. I will definitely return, and I might even have some more cookie dough French toast. Really.

Art Lines THE ART OF GOLF Nov 3 - Feb 17

T

he Art of Golf is the first major museum exhibition in America devoted to this popular game, so rich in history and tradition. Organized by the High Museum of Art in Atlanta and the National Galleries of Scotland, this show features approximately 90 works by Rembrandt, Childe Hassam, George Bellows, Norman Rockwell, and Andy Warhol, among others. Some of these works have never before been on public display. They all point to golf’s ability to inspire extraordinary works of art. The centerpiece is Charles Lees’ The Golfers (1847), the world’s greatest painting in this genre. Reproductions of the work hang in golf clubhouses around the world, but this masterpiece has never before traveled to the United States. It depicts a match played on the Old Course at St. Andrews, with a wealth of fashionable observers gathered around the athletes. Preparatory sketches (portraits of individuals in the painting) and an early photograph by Hill and Adamson, to which Lees referred, will provide context. So will “golfiana”antique balls, clubs, and clothing-to illustrate the sport’s earliest days. The Art of Golf takes a chronological approach to the paintings, as the history of the game unfolds. It begins with images of kolf, a cousin of the modern game, in seventeenth-century Dutch landscape and genre paintings. The exhibition even includes winter scenes of kolf being played on Holland’s frozen canals. Rembrandt’s famous etching, The Ringball Player (1654), is also part of this section. 84

Golf really had its foundation in Scotland. This development is brilliantly documented by the earliest known depiction of the game in the country (around 1740) and a series of Scottish golfing portraits from the National Galleries of Scotland. William Mosman’s charming fulllength double-portrait of the tartan-clad youngsters Sir

Alexander MacDonald (about 1749) is a high point. So, too, is the dignified portrait of Dr. William Inglis (about 1790) by Sir Henry Raeburn, one of Scotland’s leading artists of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Inglis’s elegant silver club is displayed on the adjacent table as a sign of aristocracy or perhaps meritocracy. 255 Beach Dr. N.E., St. Petersburg, 727-896-2667; www.fine-arts.org

THE MAN, THE IMAGE & THE WORLD:

Henri Cartier-Bresson, A Retrospective - thru Jan 13 Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908– 2004) was one of the leading photographers of the 20th century. His work not only exerted a major influence on photography but also helped his profession achieve a new status. From his first works of the 1930s that stand out for their composition, the theatrical nature of the images and the selection of details, Cartier-Bresson succeeded in recording important moments with his camera. His 1952 book, Images a la Sauvette (The Decisive Moment), introduced his ideas about creating images that combined story, action and emotion. Entire stories are often condensed into a single image, the so-called “decisive moment.” The photographer once said that photography was “putting one’s head, one’s heart and one’s eye on

the same axis.” Travel was a key element in Cartier-Bresson’s life and his work. Following trips to Mexico, the artist was sent on large-scale global reporting assignments to the United States, the Soviet Union, China, India, Bali and Indonesia. His work provided early and probing views behind the Iron Curtain and into the highly hidden cultures in Southeast Asia and the Indian Sub-continent. His work is not only a benchmark for photojournalism in the 20th century but also for the ethics of photography. Along with friends such as Robert Capa, Cartier-Bresson founded Magnum Pictures in 1947. Operating in Paris and New York City, this organization of photojournalists successfully changed the manner in which photojournalists were treated and recognized by printed sources. The Man, the Image & the World. Henri Cartier-Bresson, A Retrospective includes over 330 photographs, films and important publications. This exhibition is held in conjunction with the Foundation Henri Cartier-Bresson and Magnum Photos/Paris. Cartier-Bresson chose the works for this exhibition before his death in 2004. The exhibition has recently been on view in Zurich, Brisbane, and Seoul. 120 Gasparilla Plaza (Polk Street) Tampa, FL 33602; www. tampamuseum.org

Mythic Creatures of China - thru July 14, 2013 Chinese artists have portrayed animals in ceramics across thousands of years of the country’s con-

tinuous history. These animals captured the imaginations of Chinese potters as they sought to portray animals they had seen, and others they could only imagine. Drawn from the Ringling’s collection of Chinese ceramics, these animals will tickle your fancy with their stories, legends and vibrancy. Almost one hundred objects are presented, including dragons, butterflies, fish and phoenix. The Warren J. and Margot Coville Photography Collection - Nov 9 - Feb 3, 2012 Celebrating the gift of over 700 photographs to the collection, this exhibition will feature a representative sampling of images spanning the 20th and 21st centuries. The Warren J. and Margot Coville collection includes work by renowned photographers such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, André Kertész, Alfred Eisenstaedt, Berenice Abbott, and

Robert Capa. A number of works might be deemed photojournalistic and is, therefore, a potent mirror of social change over the century. Paolo Veronese - Dec 7 - April 14, 2012 Paolo Veronese (1528–1588) was one of the giants of Venetian painting, the most elegant of the triumvirate that also included Titian and Tintoretto. Veronese is perhaps best known for his grand

ceiling paintings and large scenes of Biblical feasts. Yet throughout his successful career, he and his workshop also created imposing altarpieces and smaller religious paintings, striking portraits, depictions of sensual episodes drawn from the classical tradition, and allegories glorifying the Venetian state. 941-358-3180, or visit www.ringling.org 86

FLORIDA MUSEUM of PHOTOGRAPHIC ARTS MARIO ALGAZE: CUBA 1999-2000 thru Jan 6 Born in Cuba in 1947, he remembers a happy childhood in the well-to-do Art Deco Havana neighborhood of Miramar. He can recall “the smell of seaweed and saltwater washing on the rocks.” It was a magical time. All this ended when he was 13 years old. That’s when he was brought to Miami by his parents. He was 52 years old before he was able to return. “I was 19 or 20 years old when I picked up the camera,” he said. “I decided to cover concerts and the cultural revolution of the time. My first published photo was of Mick Jagger when I was 25.” But after five years of photographing rock stars, he found himself dissatisfied with photojournalism. A 1974 trip to Mexico was a turning point for him, and he concentrated on photographing Latin America. On his return to Cuba in 1999, he asked for and received a letter from the authorities allowing him to photograph anywhere on the country. In the resulting images, time has stopped. Clocks seem frozen at the dawn of the Castro era.

Mid Century Cookie jars recall Nursery Rhymes

T

he cookie jar held a place of honor in American kitchens in the 1950s and 1960s when it was part of the overall home décor as well as an important piece of serving ware. Cookie jars were of good size in order to hold many cookies for America’s growing families in the years following World War II. The fact that these vintage collectibles were positioned in “the front lines” (a.k.a., on the kitchen countertop) of busy post-war American kitchens makes their condition a vital trait when assessing their appraised value on the collectibles market. Chips, cracks, and scratches to the surface decoration are key factors when evaluating these vintage cookie jars.

Some examples of the market for good quality cookie jars in good condition from the mid 1900s include a Brush Pottery company cookie jar in the shape of a cow resembling the famous Borden milk mascot named Elsie from circa 1945-50 is worth $500. McCoy’s Aunt Jemima cookie jar sold for $325, a Robinson-Ransbottom Pottery firm’s Oscar cookie jar brought $500, and the popular Little Red Riding Hood cookie jar by Hull commanded $1,500 recently. Nursery rhyme Little Old Woman who lived in characters were among a Shoe cookie jar worth $300. the most common types of cookie jars such as Humpty Dumpty, the Little Old Woman who lived in a Shoe, and Puss n Boots, to name a few. It makes perfect sense that nursery rhymes would be the featured theme for cookie jars as the characters were recognizable to youngsters.

The American baby boom sparked cookie jar production as Americans were having more babies and eating more cookies during the late 1940s and 1950s. Over the decades, cookie jars featured popular characters and cultural icons such as Felix the Cat, Howdy Doody, Mickey Mouse, Snow White, World War II American G. I.s, and Betty Boop, to name a few. The variety of cookie jars and the opportunity to collect so many different examples may contribute to the fact that many collectors just can’t stop collecting these cherished objects from childhood.

In the late 1980s, after the death of Pop artist Andy Warhol, the cookie jar market enjoyed a market spike. Warhol was an enthusiastic collector of cookie jars and viewed them as important objects of American culture. His famous estate auction brought cookie jar collecting to the forefront and put the sweet collectibles on the map. Warhol’s collection of hundreds of vintage cookie jars brought more than $250,000 at auction. The Warhol auction attracted new collectors to amass American cookie jars. Today, collectors remain committed to the cookie jar category and amass large numbers of jars from Maine to California.

With cookie jars as with cookies, it’s difficult to have just one. I have reviewed cookie jar collections all over the United States and most are assembled in large numbers of cookie jars dating from the 1950s with values for the collections reaching into the $10,000 to $20,000 range.

Does Your Hair Need an Intervention? Tips for an Easy 5-Step Rehab from Audrey Davis-Sivasothy

B

etween blow-drying, teasing, flat-ironing, highlighting and lowlighting— there are many ways to change what Mother Nature gave us. But whether you’re regularly straightening curls, lightening darker hair or vice/versa, there may be a price to pay for rebelling. But most women don’t think twice about the hair habits they’ve had for years and years, says longtime hair-care advocate and health scientist Audrey Davis-Sivasothy. “Lackluster, frazzled, overworked hair—that’s the price we pay for handling our hair like a pair of jeans. Hair is a fragile fiber that needs to be handled more like a silk blouse,” says Davis-Sivasothy, author of “Hair Care Rehab,” (www. haircarerehab.com). “Oftentimes, the style we feel the most comfortable with reinforces our bad habits. It’s a problem with all the earmarks of an addiction.” Substances of choice include: • Toxic chemicals (perms, relaxers & colors) • Hair OCD (excessive combing, brushing & heat use) • Environmental lifestyle (too much exposure to sun, surf, bad air and water) • Nutritional/dietary (fad diets, smoking, low water consumption) As with a drug addiction, once you’ve kicked your habit, you’ll liberate your bad hair, unlocking new dimensions of hair potential, says Davis-Sivasothy, who has also authored the popular “The Science of Black Hair” (www.blackhairscience. com). Audrey offers a five-step rehab for damaged hair: 1. Chelating your hair: Products containing oils, conditioners, serums and pomades (or minerals), which make you feel better in the short term, can build up and actually prevent your hair’s ability to hy-

drate. That’s why the first step in detoxing hair is the use of chelating shampoo, which is typically clear and lifts stubborn buildup from products and hard water. While many chelating shampoos are sulfate-based, there are more sulfate-free products entering the market to accommodate sensitive scalps and hair. Clarifying shampoos are a good substitute when chelating shampoos cannot be found. Moisturizing shampoo should be used for general use after detoxing is complete. 2. Deep conditioning your hair: After chelating, deep condition for 10 to 15 minutes. This should be done every seven to 10 days using moisturizing conditioners such as instant and cream-rinse, deep conditioners, protein treatments or leave-in conditioners. To go the extra mile, consider an apple cider vinegar rinse to close the cuticle and enhance your hair’s shine. 3. Moisturizing your hair: This step adds a layer of leave-on protection. You can use either leave-in conditioner or a dedicated moisturizing product, or both. For thick, dry or curly hair, this step hydrates and adds “slip.” For fine or oily hair, these products should detangle strands while encouraging volume. 4. Sealing your hair: This is the last major step in your hair intervention. Sealing with an oil or butter product locks in moisture and solidifies the gains of rehab. It smoothes out the cuticle and keeps hair moisturized for a longer period. Always use sealant on slightly dampened www.AccentOnTampaBay.com

o r misted hair, or pair the product with a waterbased moisturizer to maximize the benefits. If you have naturally oily hair, you can skip this step. 5. Styling your hair protectively: Imagine wearing a favorite sweater every day; washing, drying and ironing it several times a week – it would look pretty worn out after a few years! This is exactly what happens to hair that is bleached, colored, blown dry with artificial heat, ironed, weaved and on and on. Don’t do this anymore! There are several measures you can take to preserve the health of your hair, including wearing it up more often, cleansing it cautiously, detangling strands with a large-tooth comb, protectively using blow-dryer heat, reducing chemical use and not coloring your hair more than three shades lighter or darker than your natural color. In general, be gentle. Do not pull to hard or rapidly when styling it, too; be slow and steady. Audrey Davis-Sivasothy is a freelance writer, publisher and holds a degree in health science. 99

Neater Feeder -

The Perfect Answer for Sloppy Pets

T

he Neater Feeder is the greatest thing since sliced bread — well, if you have a messy pet like I do. I have cats. One is a very large cat, who, for some reason likes to fling his wet and/or dry food around. It seems more shows up on the floor than started out in the bowl. Enter the Neater Feeder. This pet feeder is a revolutionary system for cats and dogs that actually contains spills and splashes - no more messes all over the kitchen floor. The two-part container allows food to stay in the top reservoir while water naturally drains into the easy to empty lower reservoir, protecting floors from stains and damage and making clean-up a snap. Neater Feeder comes in different sizes for varied size pets — your Great Dane and your Chihuahua will both be content. It also comes with leg extensions so that you can make the height comfortable for your pet. This is especially good for an aging pet that may have trouble getting down low. It also helps with their ease of digestion. The bowls are made of stainless steel, which means you don’t have to worry about unsightly stained bowls, and using the raised bowl will almost eliminate food and water stains on tile. Another plus is that it’s ant proof. The Neater Feeder comes in attractive finishes including bronze and cranberry so that the pet dish doesn’t take away from the home’s decor. ig Cat Rescue is the world’s largest sanctuary for big cats who have been abused, abandoned, retired from performing acts, or saved from being slaughtered for fur coats. The sanctuary houses tigers, lions, leopards, cougars, bobcats, lynx, ocelots, servals, caracals and others — a total of 16 of the 35 species of wild cat, many of whom are threatened, endangered, or now extinct in the wild. At this home for rare and exotic cats, The narrow mission of Big Cat Rescue is to provide the best permanent home they can for these cats. The broader mission of the sanctuary is to reduce the number of cats that suffer the fate of abandonment and/or abuse and to encourage preservation of habitat and wildlife. People are urged to behave in a way that will support these goals by teaching people about the plight of the cats, both in the wild and in captivity. This is accomplished through guided tours, educational programs for young people, and by maintaining a website that is a great resource for information about exotic cats. Big Cat Rescue has built enclosures in a very natural habitat with foliage and shelter on a 45 acre site, and provides the best nutritional and medical care possible. They have conditioning and enrichment programs to provide for the cats physical and psychological well being. The sanctuary is supported entirely by donation. Big Cat Rescue is located at 12802 Easy Street, Tampa. Call 813-920-4130 for more information, or visit BigCatRescue.org.

Photographically Speaking is about learning photography’s visual language to better speak to why and how a photograph succeeds, and in turn to consciously use that visual language in the creation of our own photographs, making us stronger photographers who are able to fully express and communicate our vision. By breaking up the visual language into two main components–“elements” make up its vocabulary, and “decisions” are its grammar–David duChemin transforms what has traditionally been esoteric and difficult subject matter into an accessible and practical discussion that photographers can immediately use to improve their craft. Elements are the “words” of the image, what we place within the frame–lines, curves, light, color, contrast. Decisions are the choices we make in assembling those elements to best express and communicate our vision–the use of framing, perspective, point of view, balance, focus, exposure.

ROCKABILLY: The Twang Heard ‘Round the World - The Illustrated History Edited by Michael Dregni www.penguin.com

Born out of country, bluegrass, jazz, and the blues in the 1950s, the musical phenomenon known as rockabilly sprung from the instruments of some of the most exciting musicians in history and became what we know now as rock ’n’ roll. The story of rockabilly starts with Elvis Presley’s first Sun records that inspired all. It’s also a story rooted in the music of Carl Perkins, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, and many more rockabillies from the golden years of 1955–1959. And the story continues today, with a rockabilly revival that began with stars, such as the Stray Cats and Robert Gordon, spreading around the globe from Europe to Japan. Today, rockabilly is better than ever, with bands like Rev. Horton Heat and others playing the music and living the life from Memphis to Helsinki to Tokyo. There’s still good rockin’ tonight! The first illustrated history of the sound, style and attitude that changed music history forever, Rockabilly: The Twang Heard ’Round the World contains more than 600 rare photographs, concert posters, singles and LPs, memorabilia and collectibles—from Elvis to the Stray Cats to today—as well as interviews and reminiscences from an impressive cast of rockabilly stars.

Kingfish Action Abounds in Egmont Ship Channel Main Artery Accessing Tampa Bay Loaded with Baitfish and Predators

By Capt Bill Miller

I

’ve been kingfishing all my life and I’ve caught these fish in many different areas and scenarios. However, on Florida’s Central Gulf Coast, there’s one place I can always count on – the Egmont ship channel. The main navigational channel accessing Tampa Bay, “The Ditch,” as some call it, is a natural fish attractor because the current coming in and out of the bay carries loads of baitfish. Moreover, the cut of the channel creates tide rips and offers hiding places for those baitfish. Kingfish also like the channel because they can chase baitfish up from the depths and onto the shallow edges. There’s a reason they call it a food funnel and kingfish take full advantage of the feeding opportunities. Follow these points to better kingfish action: The Right Baits - The most common channel baitfish include cigar minnows, Spanish sardines, threadfin herring, scaled sardines and blue runners. You can catch live baits around the marker chains or around bait schools in the channel using Sabiki rigs. Drop the sabikis down by the markers or cast into the dimpling bait schools on top, and use whatever bait you catch. Handy with Hardware - Stinger rigs are essential for preventing cutoffs. I build mine with a 2/0 short shank live bait hook on the front and

112

a No, 4 treble trailer and I nose-hook the bait. Twenty-pound monofilament is a good all-around choice for line on a conventional or spinning reel that can hold at least 250 yards. Braided line can work but the no-stretch factor might yank the hook out of a king’s mouth on the typical slashing strike. A medium to light tip on the rod will help improve your hook-up/

catch ratio for the same reason. The Hot Zone - The floating channel markers and their anchor chains are particularly attractive, so always check out the cans. Some of the best king areas start with markers 9-10 and continue all the way out to “The Whistler” – the last buoy going west. Trolling Tactics - Once you reach your area, put out three or four baits at varying distances behind the boat and troll as slowly as your boat will go – about 1-2 mph on the GPS is right where you want to be. The idea www.AccentOnTampaBay.com

is to make the swimming baits look as natural as possible. Wind and tide will affect your trolling speed and you might have to bump up your rpm’s when going into the wind and tide to reach the optimal speed. Going down wind and down tide, use a controlled power drift by bumping your motor(s) in and out of gear. Follow the Food - Baitfish schools always attract kingfish, so watch for surface activity and monitor your depth recorder for pods below. Once you find the bait, slow troll around the perimeter because that’s where the kings will attack. Near the markers, use a figure-8 pattern and cross the channel to troll around each buoy. If you find a particular buoy that is holding bait and kings, concentrate your efforts there. If the markers you’re fishing fail to produce, troll out to the next set. Often you’ll find bait and kings in between the markers. When word of a hot Egmont bite gets out, the ditch it can get crowded. Be courteous and give each boat ample space when trolling. There’s plenty of fish, so cooperate with others and they’ll return the favor when you hook your big kingfish.
