MUSIC TRAX Tango Voices From Vietnam to Finland, From Bordellos to Concert Halls, New Tango Voices Book Tells the Global Side of the Genre

I

n the past two decades the tango has experienced a popular resurgence worldwide. Universally familiar as a dance form, tango is also a distinctive genre of song that was born in the impoverished outskirts of late 19th century Buenos Aires. In this book w/CD, author Donald Cohen explores its history and presents its songs with passion. Twenty-six songs illustrate the growth and diversity of tango canción, from its Argentine roots to its dissemination throughout Europe and into the Middle East and beyond. These songs are represented both in print - with melody lines, chord boxes and lyrics in their original language and in English - and through classic recordings by the original artists on the accompanying CD. Tango today reaches far beyond its birthplace in the late 19th century slums and outskirts of Buenos Aires, but has never lost touch with the global roots that made tango what it is. Donald Cohen’s tango journey begins with the diverse mix of ethnicities and cultures that populated Buenos Aires around the turn of the 20th Century. Many of the tango cancións, or tango songs, in Tango Voices captures the historical moment throughout their lyrics. The songs paint vivid pictures of daily life in the outskirts, from the tale of lost love to the desperate, hard-fought struggles for existence, to the sordid lives of pimps, prostitutes and drinking. Cohen says that these gritty, aural biographies bear some resemblance to other port music of the world, including fado, New Orleans jazz, and Greek bouzouki music: “All of these musical forms started out in the docks, the houses of ill repute, the bordellos, the little mean bars.” Donald Cohen is a retired attorney and college history and music professor, guitarist and folklorist who has spent his life studying, researching and collecting music from Europe and the Americas. Tango Voices is not only the perfect introduction to one of World Music’s most expressive and seductive genres, but also a valuable resource for all existing tango lovers. FOOD & BEVERAGE Roy’s Going Strong and Celebrating 20 Years by Melissa Wolcott and Al Martino

n this current climate of economic uncertainty, with people staying close to home and not dining out as much, Roy’s patrons seem to make an exception. The popular Hawaiian Fusion restaurant is still packing them in — a testament to their good food, good wine and good time. Throughout the year, Roy’s has several different events which afford patrons the opportunity to indulge in some dishes by Roy or some of his top chefs that are “off menu”. As always, the food is paired with the perfect wine for each course. Often, Hawaiian entertainment is provided to add a fun touch to the evening. We enjoyed such an evening recently at Roy’s 4th Annual Island Hop Dinner, an event created to celebrate the culinary riches of the islands.

The evening began with the ladies receiving beautiful real flower leis, and the men Kukui Nut bead necklaces, as we strolled into the room to the live music of a Hawaiian group. Our 5-course dinner was themed to iconic images of the islands. Our first course was called “The Sounding of the Conch Shells”, which was a wonderfully fresh Sushi Roll, served with Oberon Sauvignon Blanc. The next course, “Lighting The Tiki Touch”, was a Herb & Garlic Grilled Yellow Fin Ahi Steak Cassoulet accompanied by an Oberon Merlot. “Hawaiian Story Telling” was the third course of Imu Smoked Pork Shank Braised in Cabernet, served appropriately with an Oberon Cabernet Sauvignon. “Sway of the Hula” introduced us to a succulent Olive Oil Poached Loin of Lamb Seasoned with Hawaiian Salt, and an Oberon Cabernet Sauvignon Special Reserve. And last (but never least), a lovely dessert of Sweet Mango Butter Cake, was titled “Under the Hawaiian Moon”. A choice of Kona Coffee or loose leaf tea was offered to top it off. In between courses we were treated to authentic Hawaiian entertainment. The cost for this memorable dining experience was $85 per person with the wine selections, and $55 per person without. Roy’s is located at 4342 W. Boy Scout Blvd., Tampa, FL. Please call (813) 873-7697, or visit Roy’s website for more information on the restaurant and upcoming events.

Boca Loca Cachaça A Premium Sugar Cane Spirit oca Loca is the hot,new BPremium Cachaça from Brazil. Smooth, full bodied and fragrant with subtle floral notes mingled with melon, honey and a distinctively sweet pure sugar cane finish, Boca Loca has all the qualities expected in a premium spirit. While Rum is made from molasses, cachaça is made from the pure unrefined juice of sugar cane. Left to ferment in vats made of wood, or often copper, it is then boiled down three times to get a sticky concentrate and distilled in such a way that the scent of sugar cane is kept. From the hand harvesting of the sugar cane at its peak of sweetness through to single batch fermentation and hand-bottling, Boca Loca has the depth of quality, character and unique flavor savvy palates are looking for. The most popular cocktail made with Cachaça is the Caipirinha, (pronounced kiepurr-REEN-yah) the national cocktail of

Brazil. Boca Loca was recently awarded a Gold Medal from the Ministry of Rum Tasting Competition held at Arnaud’s Restaurant in New Orleans. The competition is an opportunity for sugar cane spirits to be judged on their own merit and in classes recognized by the sugar cane spirits industry. These spirits were judged for their color, aroma and taste by a panel of experts chosen for their experience in the culinary and beverage industries as well as media contributors with an interest in finer spirits who have shown expertise in appreciating rums. Boca Loca adds flavor and depth to any cocktail, and with an affordable price point under $20 for 750 ml bottle - it’s becoming one of the most popular spirits in the US. Whereas rum is made from sugar cane molasses, cachaça is produced straight from the juice of unrefined sugar cane. The most popular cocktail made with cachaça is the Caipirinha (pronounced “kie-purr-REEN-yah”), the national cocktail of Brazil. Often referred to as the Brazilian Mojito, the basic Caipirinha consists of a muddled lime cut in quarters and mixed with fine sugar, ice and Boca Loca Cachaça.

use the following tests, just as a Brasilian Cachaça connoisseur would: 1. Hold the bottle up to the light. Quality Cachaça is clear and without impurities. 2. Shake the bottle. The froth and bubbles should disappear in less than 30 seconds. 3. When poured slowly down the sides of a glass, it should appear like fine oil. 4. Check the aroma of the Cachaça in a glass or on the palm of your hand. If it does not smell like sugar cane, it probably is not a good Cachaça. 5. If you sense a burning sensation in your mouth or on the back of your throat, it is of poor quality. Boca Loca has some new cocktails conceived by master Mixologist Duggan McDonnell from Cantina in San Francisco. Here is one of them — visit their website for more. 3 small diced pineapple pieces 2 oz. Boca Loca Cachaça .5 oz. And now you can ride The Ride. America’s favorite animated family is in Orlando with their very own mega attraction. The Simpsons Ride plants guests in a ride adventure so big, so funny and so thrilling it’s no surprise it took years to make. “The Simpsons Ride” showcases everything the popular television series has made famous and that Simpsons fans love... a great story, humor and irreverence that are pure Simpsons, with original animation starring cast members Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright, Yeardley Smith, Hank Azaria, and guest star Kelsey Grammer.

Guests are swept into Krustyland, a theme park created by the show’s cash hungry clown. Meanwhile, maniacal Sideshow Bob has escaped from prison and has taken control of the park to get his revenge on Krusty and the Simpson family. Handpicked by Krusty to be the first to ride his newest attraction, you are thrust into the middle of the action. The attraction is larger than life, from the 32 foot tall Krusty the Clown at the

entrance (guests walk through Krusty’s mouth on his extended tongue) to the giant wrap-around cinematic experience created for this great new adventure. Guests soar through Krustyland and Springfield on a ride that features the world’s firstever cork screw that’s animated. The ride vehicle, which elevates nine feet on a scissor-lift motion based platform, was programmed to synchronize with the action on the screen and capture every nuance of movement: forwards, backwards, up and down, and tilting in all directions. The outcome results in a completely seamless virtual adventure producing visceral effects never before imagined in a theme park ride. The digital video projecton system used breaks new ground, replacing IMAX film projection with digital technology. This allows for a superior viewing experience that is four-times the Hi Def resolution observed in most home theaters and 2 times the HD res experienced in digital movie theaters. SeaWorld’s new Aquatica blends up close animal experiences, waters from serene to extreme, high-speed thrills and wide, sandy beaches. Setting foot into Aquatica, guests experience the vastness of nearly 60 acres of lush landscape inspired by the vivid color, flora and the personality of the South Sea Islands. Live animals from lands all over the world including Commerson’s dolphins, brilliant macaws and colorful fish bring to life the park’s nature. Aquatica features 36 water slides, six rivers and lagoons, and more than 80,000 square feet of beach area. The park’s signature attraction plunges riders in clear tubes through a lagoon with black-andwhite Commerson’s dolphins. Guests feel as if they are flying beneath the sea among these animals. A colorful mix of racing tunnels, raft rides and rivers offer crashing surf and high-speed thrills, while pools, lagoons and lazy rivers invite guests to enjoy slower pace. Rescue. Rehab. Release. In an average year, CMA responds to many dolphin, whale, and otter strandings and hundreds of sea turtle strandings. Rescued animals are brought back to CMA for immediate treatment and rehabilitation with the hopes of returning them back to their natural environment. After the best care available, many animals are released. Some cannot be released and depend on CMA for their longevity. Their stories are touching, inspiring and remarkable. Clearwater Marine Aquarium is not a typical aquarium. It’s a working aquarium providing medical treatment for marine animals — an animal hospital that guests can visit. You can touch, learn, and see: Rescued dolphin, otters and sea turtles; Hourly animal care and training presentations; Underwater viewing of native sharks and fish; Informative exhibits on animal rescue, rehabilitation and release; Silky stingrays in the “hands-on” exhibit Stingray Beach; Starfish, sea urchins snails and other marine invertebrates; and huge sea turtle shells. Disney Wonder cruise ship with the “Toy Story-The Musical.” This is the first time the popular classic has been adapted for the stage. The Musical explores the true meaning of friendship as Buzz Lightyear and Woody transform from jealous adversaries to best friends with an unbreakable bond. The costumes for “Toy Story-The Musical” are some of the most complex ever developed for a Disney Cruise Line production. With a combination of articulated puppets and inflatable costumes, the “Toy Story” characters come to life – including a nearly 9-foot-tall version of Rex the dinosaur and a 4-foot-round Hamm the piggybank. - Between Sept. 5 and Oct. 31, Magic Kingdom hosts this popular after-hours event. There’s trick-or-treating and a chance to experience popular attractions during a 7 p.m.midnight party which features two scheduled entertainment extravaganzas guests can see at no other time: the “Boo-toYou” Halloween parade and the bewitching “Happy HalloWishes” fireworks spectacular. “Toy Story 2,” Toy Story Mania! raises the bar for interactive ride-game attractions. It’s a high-energy, immersive adventure that puts guests right in the action as their game play triggers fun surprises that provide a fourth dimension of fun. In the timeless tradition of Disney storytelling, Toy Story Mania! takes its inspiration from the fact that Andy’s toys spring to life whenever he is away. Soon after Andy got a “Midway Games Play Set” for his latest birthday, the toys jumped at their first chance to open the box and set up the game booths and carnival trams so everyone could ride and play. Upon entering the attraction, guests are welcomed by Mr. Potato Head, looking like he stepped right down from the movie screen. The AudioAnimatronics Mr. Potato Head engages guests in two-way conversation. Everyone gets a front row seat when guests put on their 3-D glasses, “shrink” to the size of a toy and board Toy Story Mania! carnival tram ride vehicles. The route takes guests through “Andy’s Bedroom” filled with oversized murals and toys. The vehicles angle to face Toy Story Mania! game booths -- high-tech yet rooted in classic midway games of skill -- and guests aim for 3-D animated targets using their own on-board spring-action shooters. Players pair up and sit side-by-side for a friendly competition that delivers an ever-changing variety of targets and surprises. As they play, guests can actually see the “virtual” objects they’ve launched leave their spring-action shooters and hit (or miss) the targets. And thanks to 4-D special effects technology, they may sense objects whirring past them as they pop out of the 3-D scenes.

Revisiting The Flying Fish Café isney’s Boardwalk Resort houses one of the best restaurants found among the numerous Disney properties, The Flying Fish. Always a sure thing, we visited the restaurant recently and found a new (to us) chef in charge, Chef Tim Keating. Keating has actually amped up the menu, and offers some delightful new dishes. Don’t worry, some of the old favorites have survived the changes, such as the signature potato-wrapped snapper (with Creamy Leek Fondue and Red Wine and Cassis Butter Sauce) and Oak Grilled Scallops. Keating comes to the Flying Fish with great credentials, most recently as executive chef at the Biltmore in Coral Gables, and prior to that, executive chef at the Four Seasons in Houston. He was nominated for the James Beard Award in 2001, ‘02, ‘03, and ‘04. His reputation for creative menus and marvelous food prep and presentation is well-founded. Keating is a

stickler for fresh and seasonal ingredients, so look for a varied menu when you dine at the Flying Fish. Atmosphere plays into the dining experience, and the timeless Flying Fish is sophisticated yet quirky, with a modernized Coney Island theme. It is always fun to watch the chefs in action in the open kitchen and ogle various dishes as the waiters whisk them by. A sampling of some dishes you can currently look forward to are the divine Creamy Corn and Lobster Chowder, followed by a most interesting and tasty Grilled Wattleseed and Pepperberryglazed Berkshire Pork Loin, or the Citrus Zest and Schezuan Peppercorncrusted Yellowfin Tuna Loin. For dessert, how about a Warm Chocolate-Peanut Butter Bread Pudding, or the Strawberry Gelato Crumble with Fromag Blanc and Strawberry Feuille de Brik Pastry? The Flying Fish benefits well from Chef

Guerlain One Hundred Eighty Years Young

S

halimar. Named for the Shalimar Gardens in Pakistan, and built by Shah Jahan (the same shah that built the Taj Mahal,) this is probably Guerlain’s most well-known perfume. But having been introduced to the world in 1925, it is by no means their oldest. That distinction belongs to Eau de Cologne Impériale, created in 1853 for Napoleon III’s wife, Eugenie. The House of Guerlain has a rich and interesting history which was revealed to me on a recent visit to France. Not the France across the Atlantic, but the France located in Epcot at Walt Disney World. Surprisingly enough, the Guerlain shop there has more of the brand’s many fragrances (125) than any other store in the USA. Manager Caridad Canales walked me though Guerlain’s history. Guerlain is among the oldest and most highly respected perfume houses in the world. Perfumes by Guerlain have a “DNA” of basic ingredients referred to as the “Guerlinade”, consisting of: iris, rose, jasmine, vanilla (a member of the orchid family), tonka bean, and bergamot (citrus). Flowers used in perfume must be harvested early in the morning to capture the flower’s scent at it’s most potent. As the day wears on, flowers lose their scent and regain it again at night. Founded in 1828, when Pierre-François

Pascal Guerlain opened his first perfume shop, he composed and manufactured custom fragrances with the help of his sons. The success of the house under PierreFrançois peaked in 1853 with the creation of Impériale. Originally created for the beautiful Empress Eugenie for her wedding to Napoleon III, the cologne was so well liked by Napoleon, he took it for himself, and it became his fragrance. It is now the longest continuous fragrance that Guerlain produces to this day. Since its 1828 inception, Guerlain has created over 300 fragrances. The design of all of Guerlain’s different bottles are not just attractive, but each has a signifigance relating to the scent. Impériale has a distincitve repeated “bee” pattern on the bottle, which when turned upside down reveals a fluer di lis pattern. This is a bit of nose-thumbing at the preceding French monarchy, with whom that emblem was associated. Today’s bottle is the same design as Napoleon’s. Although his would have had real 24kt gold embellishing, you can still special order it like that today with personalized name engraving for $1,200 (cologne) to $1,600 (perfume) a bottle. Perfume is categorized by its perfume oil www.AccentOnTampaBay.com

Keating’s travels, as he brings his gained worldly cuisine knowledge to the table. As a result, the restaurant has a unique mix of food that can’t be compartmentalized. For reservations, call 407-WDW-DINE. For more information, visit http:// disneyworld.disney.go.com. content, with Perfume Extract (20-40%), followed by Eau de Parfum (10-30%), Eau de Toilette (5-20%), and Eau de Cologne (25%). Obviously, the higher the percent of aromatic compounds, the more intense and longer the scent lingers. Using a musical metaphor, perfume is made up of three sets of “notes”, creating a harmonious chord. The different notes are released over time, with the immediacy of the top note, leading to the stronger middle note, and the base note as the final stage. An expert perfumer is referred to as “the nose”, and much like wine’s master sommelier, he must be able to ascertain all the ingredients in a perfume, and how they will blend together over a period of time. Perfume oils usually contain tens to hundreds of ingredients. To keep your perfume well preserved, you must keep it away from heat and light sources. An opened bottle will keep it’s aroma intact for a year if nearly full, however, as the level goes down oxygen in the air will alter it’s scent. Spray dispensers minimize the oxygen exposure. Although Guerlain is best known for their perfumes, they also have a wonderful line of makeup and skincare products. In fact, Guerlain was the first to create scientifically based skincare and to sell kohl eyeliner and mascara, and to introduce the first lipstick to the world in 1840. France is lovely this time of year (at Epcot), so stop in at Guerlain’s and plan to stay a while to decide which scent and makeup are perfect for you with the help of their friendly and knowledgeable staff. on Tampa Bay

With such extravagant iconic shops as Chanel, Gucci, Cartier, Louis Vuitton, Ferragamo and Tiffany & Co., all within steps of each other, it is a shopper’s paradise. One hundred fifty stores and restaurants also provide plenty of shopping choices for those who may not necessarily be in the couture league. The architectural design of the mall itself is inviting with gleaming chrome, glass, and loads of natural light filtering in throughout the day. One of the things that sets this mall apart from others is the personalized service that is stressed throughout all the shops. You can also purchase the “Millenia Experience”, which begins with a personalized on-site image and styling consultation to help shoppers find clothes that work best for their body type and provide tips on simple wardrobe tricks. It is followed by a personal shopping session at the Mall’s most luxurious retailers, and a customized makeup lesson. On top of that is a Mall at Millenia gift card, and a sumptuous lunch at one of the Mall’s restaurants, such as P.F. Chang’s China Bistro, The Cheesecake Factory or Brio Tuscan Grille, as well as a cocktail at Blue Martini, to cap off the day. I stopped in at a few of the high-end retailers and chatted with managers and clerks to find out

oeSox are an innovative alternative to traditional athletic socks, which form to the contours of your foot while allowing each of your toes to separate. a bit about their stores. It was an interesting little journey. At Cartier, I learned about their history, their contributions to the art of jewelry, and what makes the pieces so darned expensive. Louis Cartier established his company in 1847 in Paris. He and his sons built the company up to the pinnacle of success through their craftsmanship and artistry, and became “Jeweler of Kings.” Massproduced jewelry is a bit like a car — as soon as you drive it off the lot, it has lost value. Not so with Cartier pieces, they are all handcrafted, signed and numbered, and increase in value. In fact, in 1983, Cartier launched a campaign to buy back it’s historical pieces. Whether it’s a one point or a ten carat diamond, they are all cut into 58 facets, and one craftsman may work 500 hours on one piece. It takes about three years to launch a collection. Cartier has a beautiful website if you would like more information on their history and pieces: www.cartier.com. Ferragamo, of course, is most famous for their shoes. Salvatore Ferragamo came to Hollywood Pilates. This second skin provides a complete hygienic barrier between you and the mat or apparatus. Toe separation both strengthens and stretches the muscles in your feet resulting in greater blood circulation and reducing the chances of injury. You can enhance your equilibrium in standing poses by spreading the toes and the ball of the standing foot. The broader your base, the more stable you are, and even the slightest widening of the sole of the foot is helpful.

from Italy as a young man, and quickly became shoemaker to the stars. He studied anatomy to really understand feet. Ferragamo was the first shoe designer to create the wedge (1937), and to use materials other than leather. This was originally done out of necessity, since during the Mussolini years, leather wasn’t readily available. Somewhere along the line, they expanded into handbags and accessories which are also well sought-after. The company is still family-owned and run, and all products are hand-crafted and made in Italy. Another lovely website: www.ferragamo.com. I found Dior’s shop to be cleverly laid out, starting with handbags, turning a corner to sunglasses, on to shoes, another corner to Baby Dior, and on to dresses. They know how to draw a customer in. The Baby Dior line was born when Princess Grace asked Dior to make baby clothes for little Princess Caroline. The ready-to-wear dress room has a wonderful large monitor looping their current collection, which can be ordered. Dior is all about personal service. At the Orlando Ritz-Carlton, guests can request Dior mini-trunk shows to come to them. If you are confused about the difference between couture and haute-couture as I was, it is: couture is a runway piece that can be ordered; haute-couture is a one-of-a-kind piece. I must confess, I own neither! Dior’s website is: www.dior.com. All these fabulous shopping opportunites make the Mall at Millenia a desired destination rather than just an afternoon distraction from Orlando’s theme parks. Forty years after Mao and his People’s Liberation Army set poised to change China forever, Dr. Lili Quan honors her mother’s dying wish returns to China. Lili meets and falls in love with Chi-Wen Zhou, finds the grandfather Lili believed had died years ago, who has discovered the secret to long life. Unscrupulous men vie for control of the most earth-shattering discovery of the century.

Forensic scientist Theresa MacLean is called to the scene of a murder. What unfolds during the next eight hours is nothing she could ever have imagined. Her police detective fiancé is taken hostage with six others in a bank robbery. When her fiancé is injured, she seizes the opportunity to trade places with him. Once on the inside, she will use all her wiles, experience, and technical skills to gain control of the situation. But what initially appears to be a bank heist turns into something far more complex and deadly.

Alva Hunt and Hugh Gant began their infamous careers fencing automobile parts as the Florida land boom became a bust. After doing hard time in state jails, they emerged as bank robbers and embarked on a crime spree across the Deep South. In the end they were captured and served time in Leavenworth, Alcatraz and other penitentiaries. Their reign was one of terror for Florida and many Southern states.

The barbarian horde destroyed the Roman Empire, founded the nations of Europe, and united China into a world power. This narrative will emphasize the dramatic and human element of this period in history-the terror of the barbarians’ victims, as well

as the almost insane pleasure the barbarians themselves took in fighting and pillaging.

Hard Driving is the dramatic story of Wendell Scott’s dogged determination to compete, despite daunting obstacles, at the highest level of NASCAR. Hard Driving documents a previously untold chapter in the history of integration, politics, and sports in America. It reveals the reluctance of auto executives to sponsor a black driver; and the inspiring support Scott received from white drivers such as Ned Jarrett and Richard Petty, who admired his skill and tenacity.

Documentaries that feature their filmmakers, such as the works of Michael Moore and Morgan Spurlock, have drawn criticism that documentaries now promote entertainment at the expense of truth. This book examines the clash between the authenticity claimed by documentaries and their association with imagination and experimental contemporary art.

One of the most controversial artists of the 20th century, Salvador Dalí was also an avant-garde filmmaker, collaborating with such giants as Luis Buñuel, Walt Disney, and Alfred Hitchcock. Influenced by the Marx Brothers, Buster Keaton, and Stanley Kubrick, Dalí used the cinema to bring the “dream subjects” of his paintings to life, providing the groundwork for revolutionary forays into television, video, photography, and holography. Dalí’s hallucinatory vision never fails to leave its indelible mark.

Several miles down the road is Ponce de Leon Inlet, a place with many points of interest. The 1887 Ponce Inlet Lighthouse and outer buildings are quite fascinating. One of the best preserved — and tallest — in the country, the lighthouse is a challenge to climb at 175 feet. And climb I did — all 202 steps. I am not as much afraid of heights as I am of ladders or open stairs. I never thought I’d do it, but I was determined, and finally made it to the top — white knuckles gripping the handrail all the way, while young kids scampered by me forcing me to let go of the handrail for terrifying brief moments. The view from the top was magnificent, and worth the fear-factor. Getting down was just as bad, but I was proud of myself when I hit the bottom stair. The outer buildings are part of the museum and one of the more interesting ones houses the Fresnel lenses, which were the best lighthouse lenses made. This is one of the finest collections in the world, and includes the lenses from the Cape Canaveral lighthouse and the original Ponce Inlet lighthouse. The nearby Marine Science Center will fascinate the kids (and we adults too) with interactive marine ecological displays. They

have sea bird and sea turtle rehab labs, where you can watch them working with these wonderful creatures with the intent of returning them to the wild. Although we had planned to go deep sea fishing, the weather gods weren’t cooperating, and made the seas too rough for the outing. Critter Fleet is located right at Ponce Inlet, and takes folks out on half and full day trips, providing rods, reels, bait — whatever you need for the “big catch.” The boats are large, and normally take 50-60 people to fish for Snapper, Grouper, Sea Bass, even Shark. Next time. Another activity quashed by the rough seas was the Daytona Beach Surfing School. I looked forward to “hanging 10” (do they still say that?) like I did 40 years ago. Actually, I never hung 10, I rarely got up on the surfboard, but it sounds cool. The school offers one to three-hour lessons, private or group. Next time. Canoeing was also off for the day, due to rough waters, but Cracker Creek Canoeing takes you on Spruce Creek, a natural black water stream — one of only a few left undisturbed in Florida. Next time. Upping the adventure ante, next came the Richard Petty Driving Experience at Daytona International Speedway. It’s pretty heady stuff to find yourself strapped in and riding shotgun with a professional driver in a stock car that’s going around 160 mph and taking those 31° banks at the speedway. The 3-lap event was enough for us to get the feel of what it’s like, and have tremendous appreciation and respect for the professional drivers that do 400-500 miles. We took a walk through the Daytona 500 Experience (an attraction dedicated to NASCAR) enjoying the exhibits, and had to try out our skill at “Acceleration Alley”. Guests are pitted against each other in 80% size stockcars, and race with NASCAR simulators. If/when you hit a wall, you get gently bounced and jostled, for a realistic ride. Still in racing mode, we drove over to Speedpark Motorsports where Al tried his

prowess at the drag racing attraction “Nitro Alley”. Four dragsters are lined up against each other and put pedal to metal to see who’s the fastest. You start off at 2 G-forces and almost 3 at the brakes. The track is 196 feet and you are stopped in about 35 feet. Al said it was a really fun, adrenaline pumping experience. www.AccentOnTampaBay.com

When I was twenty years old, I wanted to go skydiving, but couldn’t get anyone to go with me. I didn’t want to go alone, so that was that. Fast-forward 40 some years, and I find myself with an opportunity to go skydiving at Skydive Deland. I wrestled with the thought and decided it was now or never. Once I heard it was a tandem jump, it was a no-brainer — I was really just going to be along for the ride.

Melissa’s first tandem skydive at SKYDIVE DELAND.

Even though some of my other planned activities had been canceled due to the weather, this one was not. Although it was very windy, a little window of opportunity came when the wind died down just enough to allow for the flight and jump. I was more excited than frightened while hanging around the airport waiting for the wind to be right. Mostly because my tandem skydiver, Ray Pope, was a seasoned veteran with 24 years worth of jumps and had never even sprained an ankle. I figured he had at least one more good jump in him. When you go tandem, the “guest” is strapped tightly to the front of the skydiver, and he tells you what to do once you leave the plane. Simple instructions, so no worries there. I asked Ray how old the oldest person was he ever tandem jumped with. When the answer came back “94”, I didn’t feel so old doing it anymore. You must be at least 18 to jump. Unlike my terrifying trip up and down the lighthouse stairs, I was inexplicably as calm as can be on the plane ride up to 13,500 feet. The only brief moment of “OMG” was when we were teetering in the doorway of the plane ready to jump. From then on it was “Whoo Hoo” all the way down. Our Daytona Beach adventure began with a visit to the historic Jackie Robinson Ball Park (since 1914, renamed from City Island Ballpark), where the Daytona Cubs were playing the Vero Beach Devil Rays. In keeping with their Tampa Bay namesake’s current stats, they won! The ballpark was the first site to host a racially integrated game in 1946, and the park was renamed after Jackie Robinson in 1990. Moving on to a less sedentary activity, we checked out the Daytona Beach Jet Boats at Aunt Catfish Dock (a popular local restaurant) at nearby Port Orange. After donning our slickers (we were informed we WILL get wet) we rode out four miles into the Halifax River spinning 360° and sliding over our own waves. Lots of fun and laughs.

with your jump, which I highly recommend. You can relive your dive over and over, and regale your friends and family with your incredible bravery. The photographer jumps out ahead of you on his back, and the camera is attached to his helmet, so he maneuvers himself to be close to you. The DVDs are impressive, with music, slow-motion, and interviews. Plus, they amazingly hand it to you within a few minutes of your dive. [This is where I get you to visit our website and view my skydive video by photographer Marat Leiras - www.accentontampabay.com, click on TRAVEL & EVENT PHOTO & VIDEO GALLERY, click on FLORIDA TRAVEL, click on DELAND, SKYDIVE DELAND VIDEO] Skydive Deland is well respected in the Skydiving world, and a lot of parachute testing goes on there. They have the most up-to-date parachute equipment in the world, as the tandem parachute system used everywhere is made right in Deland. If I have an opportunity to skydive again, I would do a few things differently. I would wear something to cover my ears - the wind is very strong when you’re free-falling at 120 mph. I would also take one half of a Dramamine tablet to quell the queasiness I felt during the loops and soars that Ray did on the way down. All-in-all it was a thrilling life-time experience! After all the exciting adventures in Daytona Beach, one must relax and unwind. And what better way than a nice spa treatment. Near our hotel was the Ocean Waters Spa, a world away from speed and adrenaline. This oasis is a European-style spa, with lovely serene earth tones, located in the Plaza Resort, and overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. You are already unwinding by the time you hit the massage table. Bliss. Dining in Daytona Beach was a treat, with non-chain dining opportunities all over. There are several musts for breakfast in Daytona Beach — The Dancing Avocado Kitchen, and the Daytona Diner. The Dancing Avocado is a very quirky/funky little place which concentrates on healthy food, and is

ecologically-friendly. The restaurant, located on historic Beach Street, is open for breakfast and lunch. The Daytona Diner’s decor reflects Daytona speed, with the 50s nostalgia feel and icons all over the place, and it’s located right next to the big Harley Davidson store. But the biggest draw are their delicious big dinner plate size pancakes. Even though they have a varied menu, this is the “gotta” order at the diner. Plain, Blueberry Hill, Pecan, or Banana — you can’t go wrong. We had lunch one day at the 1940 Inlet Harbor Marina and Restaurant, a Caribbeanflavored spot overlooking the intercoastal. The Barbados Bacon-Wrapped Shrimp was very tasty, and the atmosphere was fun. Dinner at The Cellar was memorable, with Italian cuisine served amidst a Tuscan-style decor. We really enjoyed our choice of Ravioli Sauteed with Mixed Olives, Light Tomato Sauce and Goat Cheese. The restaurant is located in the 1907 winter residence of President Warren G. Harding, and is on the National Historic Registry. Current owners/ hosts, Sam and Lina Moggio are a warm and welcoming couple. The Stonewood Grill & Tavern is an area favorite, and is packed most of the time. Although there are 16 Stonewood Grills in

It was so quiet, we could hear dogs barking below, cows mooing as we passed over farms. We were in very capable hands with our pilot Bob Wilamoski, who’s been flying since 1981. BUCS BITS By Barbara McGovern

Where Do The Bucs Go From Here? Everything was positive for the Bucs. Training camp went very well. They got almost everything they wanted from the draft. They have enough cap money left so that they can deal if they need to. There were no serious injuries on the field. The only distraction was the circus in the middle of training camp. That was fun for a couple of days but then “Days Our Lives” ended , the world kept spinning and everyone got to business. Jeff Garcia was able get back onto the field after his injury so the quarterback situation seems to have been sorted out. Brian Griese and Luke McCown both look quite able to lead the team if they need to. The defense looks very impressive, again. They have expe-

rience, youth and speed. Raheen Morris says knowledge is speed and they are as fast they have ever been. The receivers are looking better then they have looked also. The final cuts have been made. There will be some tweaking here and there, but the season is set. The team has lost some players that may come back to haunt them, that’s what the NFL is all about. I’m sure they would like to have kept everyone but they couldn’t do that. Some fan favorites have been lost, Chris Simms and Ryan Nece, among others. Both Chris and Ryan have been real assists to the community and they will be missed. God speed to both and to all the other who will be moving. This could be the year that the Bucs go all the way back to the Super Bowl. They seem to have the puzzle pieces in place. Can they all come together? Time will to tell. The Bucs in Ray Jay in February! That would be the real deal. GO BUCS !!!
