May 14-17 at the St. Pete Time Forum Worlds of Fantasy whisks audiences on a captivating adventure to four magical locations, including the mystical land of Pixie Hollow. For the first time ever, audiences will meet the Disney fairies in a live debut of the Tinker Bell story, the tale of how Tinker Bell comes to life and the fairies prepare for spring. From the contemporary feel of Cars and Tinker Bell to the timeless quality of The Little Mermaid and The Lion King, audiences will see four completely different Disney worlds brought to life, combined with a brand new Disney Princess pre-show experience. With the Disney Princess Pre-Show, a Disney Princess presides over a dazzling display of gorgeous gowns and mementos from the Disney Princess stories, providing a beautiful setting for photo opportunities. Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse start the fun, driving into the spotlight in their roadster that unexpectedly breaks down. Mater, Lightning McQueen, Sally, Flo and Ramone from “Cars” speed into action to reenergize the roadster. As Mickey and Minnie’s “road trip” continues, the whimsical scenery transforms into fluorescent coral and clam shell drums for Ariel’s world in The Little Mermaid. Then the stage is set for the regal Pride Rock in The Lion King. Pixie Hollow’s set uses inflatable technology to create a giant tree backdrop. Each fairy has an “inner sparkle” that glimmers through her clothing. Patterns, lighting and color, enhances the magic of each fantastic world. www.disneyonice.com.

Dangerous Women The visual consumption of woman has for centuries been at the cornerstone of art. This fascination—or even obsession—with women of all descriptions is perhaps nowhere more apparent than during the Italian Baroque. Images of the Madonna aside, one can hardly recall an artist of the period without also calling to mind the exotically clad, voluptuous temptresses Judith, Susannah, or Salome.

Enticing, irresistible, but ultimately deadly, these women occupy a significant number of pictures produced in Italy during the seventeenth century, testifying both to the power and potency of the feminine mystique “Judith with the Head of Holofernes” by del Cairo at this time. In the Ringling Collection alone there are sixteen representations of these femme fatales, eleven of which date between 1596 and 1700. Dangerous Women will bring together a selection of the Ringling’s works in an effort to explore not the rationale behind this artistic phenomenon, but rather the richness of its consequences. the eating of chocolate bunnies. And as a true chocolate lover, the Easter Bunny is among the coolest of the holiday figures, in my opinion.

A

pair of twins brought both their grandmother and their favorite painting from her house to one of my antique appraisal events recently. The girls told me that they love the painting of the bunnies and were excited to find out what it is worth. The lovely, polite, and very bright twin sisters, aged 6, were quite excited to learn about the meaning of the bunny painting that had been promised to them. Unlike the girls, their grandmother contained her excitement about the painting until I appraised the 19th Century American work of realist art featuring bunnies in a landscape at $6,000-$8,000. It is well known that bunnies give birth to large litters in early spring and they can conceive a second litter while pregnant with the first litter, (a.k.a., superfetation). Bunnies may give birth to several litters over the course of one year. Many of us refer to this miracle of nature as “multiplying like rabbits.”

Easter edibles were historically exchanged as a traditional rite of the arrival of the joyous spring season. The origin of the Easter basket actually looks back to the time when children made brightly colored nests, not for the birds of spring, but for offerings brought by the Easter Bunny or Oschter Haws. Dating back to the 1700s, children would build colorful nests to host the goodies given by the Easter Bunny. The nests would be hidden around the home and garden and children would wait to receive their treats. The “nests” would hold treats for good boys and girls. The Easter Bunny mainly left brightly colored eggs and other goodies for children to discover.

Why eggs? The springtime connection to birds laying eggs is one answer. Of course, the egg also has a longstanding and obvious association with fertility. Biblical scholars suggest that since Easter celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ in Christianity, the egg represents the round stone that was miraculously moved from in front of Jesus’ Since the ancient times, bunnies of the Dr. Lori with the young twin owners of a valuable tomb at the Resurrection. fields had a central role in the traditional painting of bunnies with their grandmother. The hand-made nests were later replaced springtime festivities and they served as symby our more modern or contemporary Easter baskets. Perhaps the reabols of renewal. This is close to the iconography of the painting that I appraised for the twin girls. In addition to the bunny as a well-documented fertility symbol, the animals also enjoy a close association with the 19th Century painting of bunnies in a Easter holiday via the landscape worth $6,000-$8,000 ever popular Easter Bunny. While the furry fertility symbol has its origins in the region of southwestern Germany in the 17th Century, the Easter Bunny remains the most evident symbol of spring. Some reports indicate that the Easter Bunny was introduced to Americans by the Pennsylvania German settlers. The Easter Bunny is a character who came into his own in America about 1840. With the Easter Bunny came some other popular springtime traditions like the giving of Easter baskets, the decorating and dying of eggs, and

Hyatt Regency and The Red Door Spa A Perfect Combination

How could we go wrong? e found the Hyatt Regency Bonaventure nestled in Weston — a town we were not familiar with, but discovered it to be an upscale enclave, home to some notable sports figures and others of affluence. Indeed this town of only 65,000 boasts four glossy lifestyle magazines. Hyatt took over an existing property in 2006, and completely renovated it with a $100 million makeover, which is evidenced when you first enter the Hyatt lobby and see the quietly elegant design and decor of the hotel’s common grounds. Warm dark woods, marble and earth tones are carried through the hotel and guest rooms. The Hyatt is very proud of being the Broward County’s first State-Certified Green Hotel. We chose a one bedroom unit overlooking a golf course and waterway populated by wood storks, ducks, egrets, and other water birds. The guest rooms are all condo units decorated in a British Colonial style, and are available as kings, doubles or suites. The suites have kitchens with refrigerators, microwaves, and a stove top. Rooms have connecting doors which can be rented together to accommodate families or groups (think girlfriend getaways!) Of special note to pet owners — Fido is welcome at the Hyatt, with special amenities just for him!

fter our drive from St. Petersburg and checking in, we hit the Zen Bar in the hotel lobby for a refreshing cocktail and tasty appetizers. The bar is decorated in muted tones and comfortable seating for a relaxing atmosphere, yet lends itself to spirited discussions.

E

xploring the hotel grounds, we found they cover 23 acres and are lovely, with lots of lush vegetation, waterfall pools, and pathways filled with the delightful sounds of many birds. Along one such path we met “Anthony and Cleopatra” two beautiful swans that have their own little island home in one of the many waterways found in the complex. The Hyatt’s landscape is dotted with some unique plantings which are being named and plaqued to sate the curiosity of guests. Three swimming pools are on property, the main one with cabanas and a cafe/bar. There are several dining options on property, with the casual Cabana pool cafe, Club Banyan, and Ireland’s Steakhouse — all of which serve wonderful food. Located in front of Ireland’s is an attractive herb garden, which is utilized by all the Hyatt restaurants. The upscale Ireland’s is very popular with the local residents, and Chef Bob Axenfeld prepares a menu that pleases all. He certainly pleased us with our dinner choices. Our appetizers were Fennel Scallop with fennel pollen, Kobe sliders, and Coconut Shrimp with pineapple. Their signature appetizer — and a must — is “On The Rocks”. Lava rocks are heated to 650°, and brought to your table where the waiter cooks slim pieces of NY strip that has been marinated. It was memorably tasty. Their meat comes from the Neiman Ranch in California (a green ranch) For dinner we had Pork Shank with potatoes au gratin, and creamed corn. And an order of Lobster Tails proved to be sweet and succulent. A nice touch was the offering of NY style Condiments, which include 4 different

kinds of salt: Black Hawaiian lava salt (for beef); Red Hawaiian salt sweet (for lamb); Australian course salt (fish and poultry) and Fine White Mediterranean Sea Salt with no iodine. For dessert we ordered several because they sounded so intriguing: Haagen-daz Pistachio Ice Cream with Olive Oil Cake and Apricot Compote — wonderful, and NY style Cheesecake - which turned out to be the real deal, which is not always the case in a lot of restaurants. The service was impeccable, the dinner, divine. Ireland’s and the Hyatt Bonaventure have both had the well deserved 4-diamond award bestowed on them by AAA, making Ireland’s the only restaurant in Broward County with that distinction.

he Red Door Spa was founded by Elizabeth Arden in 1936 in Maine. She created the first successful spa experience as a destination. Best known for her cosmetics, Ms. Arden was the brand choice for the world’s most famous and glamorous women. Spas bearing her name have grown and multiplied through the years, and have always maintained the highest of quality and reputation. It is with this knowledge that we stepped through the famous Red Door at the Weston location. The first set of red doors opens to a calming open garden of flowers and waterfalls, where you can immediately begin to relax. The next set takes you to the open lobby/ registration desk where you sign in for your chosen treatment. Although there are 31 treatment rooms offering many different spa options, we both

The massage utilizes a friction method, involving heat and Tara Indian oils which are chosen especially for you to best suit your body/personality type. It involves a lighter touch, and is a very relaxing massage which will remove toxins, and drain away any tensions you may feel. Needless to say, it was wonderful. The Spa offers just about any treatment you can think of, and more, in a very relaxing atmosphere.

f you decide to go off property, some of the best shopping in the state can be found at Sawgrass Mills outlet mall. This mall is often a travel destination in itself. Shopping for unique items is fun at Los Olas Blvd. in Ft. Lauderdale. The brand new Pembroke Gardens outdoor shopping complex with restaurants is a big attraction as well. The Everglades are close by, and tours are very popular. Of course boating is always an option in the area. Also several casinos are not a far drive for some nighttime fun. Two 18-hole golf courses and tennis are very close by as well.

MILITARY MIGHT O

ne of the most prolific publishers of military matters is Zenith Press. It seems you can find just about any book on anything military in their roster, including all wars and all aspects of the military. Here are just a few:

From the muddy trenches of France in World War I to the arid landscape of Iraq, War Stories of the Infantry immerses a reader in the immediate drama of combat as American infantrymen, Army and Marine Corps, have experienced it. In its pages, infantrymen tell of their struggles with the enemy, the terrain, the weather, as well as their own fears and doubts in battle. We endure what they endure, as they rout the enemy or open their eyes in a field hospital or suffer the indignities of a POW camp.

A revealing and perhaps shocking account of the story of Jesus as told by his executioner, Pontius Pilate. This fictional tale was culled by the author from archeological evidence and

craft in service with each unit along with their individual and squadron markings. - The definitive study of the equipment and organization of the Allies bomber units throughout the war. Organized by theatre of operations, the book describes in depth the various units that were fighting on the front at key points in the war and describes the models of aircraft in service with each unit along with their individual and squadron markings.

On the morning of March 1, 1942, the WWIera destroyer USS Edsall--under orders to deliver some forty Army Air Force fighter crews to the beleaguered island of Java--split off from the USS Whipple and the tanker Pecos and was never seen again by Allied forces. This book explores the many puzzling facets of the Edsall’s disappearance in order to finally tell the full story of the fate of the vessel and her crew.

This book traces the legendary 82nd Airborne’s history from its roots in the 82nd Infantry Division to its current service. While providing a historical overview of the grand heritage of the All Americans, author Fred J. Pushies focuses primarily on the unit’s contemporary service. He discusses the division’s involvement in Grenada and Panama; its service throughout the 1990s in Iraq, Haiti, Bosnia, and Kosovo; and, since 9/11, its active presence in Afghanistan and Iraq.

BUCS BITS By Barbara McGovern

A New Direction for the Bucs Even though it’s the off season the Bucs are still making headlines. First the old regime was let go and then they got a new GM and new coaches. Things were looking interesting. A new wind began to blow, changes were in the wind but perhaps the wind was blowing too hard. On a Wednesday in February the unexpected happened; not only unexpected, but unimaginable The Bucs released Derrick Brooks; Warrick Dunn; Ike Hilliard; Joey Galloway and Cato June. Just like that an era ended. These players were heroes in the community; Derrick was like the father figure of the team. Both Derrick and Warrick had won the NFL’s Walter Payton Man of the Year award for their charitable work. These were players who came from the Tony Dungy School of Good People. I hope the new guys on the block follow in Tony’s footprints and extend his legacy of excellence. Raheem Morris isn’t letting any grass grow under his feet. The 32 year old has hit the field running. Given three extra days of training camp by the NFL, Raheem made sure they were productive. He is not going to forget last year’s meltdown during the end of the season. He’s not going to let any of the players

forget it either. It was embarrassing and it shouldn’t have happened. Things are going to be a lot more physical this year. Offensive coordinator, Jeff Jagodzinski knows the drill. Raheem knows the physical team wins, they run ,they hit, they tackle. That is what wins ball games. Players, be warned, don’t slack off, don’t rest ;or watch out; Raheem will get you. It is exciting to see the changes that will be made before the opening game. Everyone has their work cut out for them. Can the new kids in town make miracles happen? I’m so glad the Jay Cutler questions has been sorted out. Last year training camp was a complete zoo. Can you imagine how confused and upset the players had to have been? Of course this the NFL and things are always changing, but the disrespect to Jeff Garcia was unnecessary and counter productive, not only to Jeff but the entire team. I’m hoping things got sorted out quickly this year so that the team can concentrate on the real issue - WINNING! Good luck to the players who have left us and good luck to the players who will be joining us. Good luck to the entire staff, may things go well and may the wind be always at your back. Remember, this year training camp will be at One Buc Place. Now we don’t have to run to Orlando. Yea! GO BUCS

Marty Sez...

Pain—The Price of Glory

By Marty Peters Well, the run of good luck finally ended. After going through a period of numerous bumps, bruises, strained ligaments, fractured fingers, and even a couple broken noses, I had made it for the past five years with no major injuries…until, dum dum DUM, a torn Achilles. Crap. Not just a torn Achilles. A ruptured Achilles. I’m not sure what the difference between a tear and a rupture is, but I’m guessing someone went with ruptured because it sounds more painful and you get a lot more sympathy. At least, the idea was to get more sympathy. Not so much in my household. The wife is pretty much of the camp “suck it up”. The kids don’t give me much slack either. I was in a wheelchair, and they tried to take me down the front step. They ended up dumping me on the front lawn. Most kids would be freaked out. Mine just sighed and said that I would probably be there forever. They are now officially out of the will. I’m giving everything to the cat. Including my wheelchair. Maybe the cat can find a Bond villain to go with it. The tear happened during a flag football game. Most people say that I probably didn’t stretch it out enough, but nay nay, I fully stretched. In fact, it was probably too stretched…I read that after a bunch of exercise, the body get a little too loose and things can slip out of place too easily. Or, maybe it was just my time…doctor said that most weekend warriors like myself blow out their Achilles between the ages of 35-45, and I hit that dead center. So, for all you 40-year olds out there….beware, the sands of time….(insert evil laugh here). The good thing is that I scored a touchdown on the play. The defense was in a zone, so I ran a seam route right up the middle. The throw was a little high, but I wrestled the ball away from two defenders and kept my feet inbounds. Or, should I say, what was left of my feet. I knew I did something, but it wasn’t particularly painful…I thought maybe a twisted ankle, except there was discomfort in my calf. I found out later that the tendon split in two, with half of the tendon balling up in my calf. Hope you weren’t eating a sandwich just now. I also read that this is supposed to be the most excruciating pain you’ve every felt, kind of like watching “The Notebook” on DVD. But, didn’t hurt that bad. The wife carted me off to the local band-aid station, er, 46

weekend emergency clinic. It was actually a walk-in clinic, nice irony, since I only could crawl. The on staff doctor looked maybe 15 years old. I told him I tore my Achilles. He looked at it and said maybe. Maybe? Do you see that mush hole where there’s supposed to be a tendon? He left the room a couple times to check WedMD, and then performed a couple tests. Not much confidence in this quack. So, he wrapped it up in a soft cast with bandages and I think a little duct tape and sent me on my way. Given my uneasiness about this guy, I blew off his referral and found an orthopedic group for my next appointment. I waited 90 minutes to get in, but it took the doctor 15 seconds to make the diagnosis. I’m not kidding…15 seconds. He ran his hands down my calf once and said it was torn and he could fix it and surgery is next week and see you later and pay your copay on the way out. Wow. This guy could almost open a drive-thru. Surgery was almost as quick. To avoid cutting on the wrong foot (thank you Tampa General), both you and the surgeon initial your leg with a Sharpie. I thought I would be funny by drawing an arrow that said “cut here”. Surgeons don’t have senses of humor. Or maybe they do…I think he may have left a sponge or two in there. Hmmm. So, I’m on the road to recovery. Actually, I’m not on any road. It was my right foot, so I can’t drive anywhere in my pimped out walking boot. I guess I could drive, but it would be beyond having a lead foot…I would end up going 0 to 100 in an instant given the weight of this boot. So, I sit at home and mope. As most injured athletes know, you can’t rush rehab. I can’t even work out lower body, and I hate upper body work. The wife bought me 20 pound weights to do curls…most curls I’m used to are the 16 ounce variety. I also started doing pushups (the kid kind…on my knees) and crunches. It’s a new experience, but I’m hoping at the end that I don’t end up like Popeye…giant biceps, no legs, a corn cob pipe and a funny accent. I’ve even been craving spinach. Uh oh. Wish me luck on the recovery. I hope to be walking in a month or so, and maybe that touchdown wasn’t my last football play. Maybe I can get Brett Favre to join me in some sort of coming-out-of-retirement package. We’ll see.
