The Haunting, Intimate World Of Eastern European Lullabies

he mother, the cradle, the voice, and the universe. Melodies born to the joys and sorrows of families from villages in the Russian Far North to Armenia and Greece. This is the lullaby as revealed by America’s preeminent Eastern European vocal ensemble, Kitka. Their latest album, Cradle Songs, is a gentle journey through the traditions that shaped young dreams along the eastern edges of Europe, and a song-cycle that embraces the ensemble’s personal memories of childhood. The pastel hush-a-bye ditties many in the West associate with lullabies and children’s songs are a world away from the pensive, magic-steeped, and sometimes dark songs sung over the cradles in Slavic, Balkan and Caucasian cultures. “These songs were not only about putting a baby to sleep, they summon something bigger, something cosmic,” muses Kitka singer Shira Cion. “We wanted to create something different than a purely sweet and sentimental album. We envisioned an album that captured

all the depth and dimensions of motherhood.” “At first, I found these lullabies really challenging,” reflects Kitka singer Janet Kutulas. “They seemed almost inaccessibly dark. But the more you listen to them, the more and more beautiful they become. They aren’t your stereotypical tra-la-la lullaby.” The Georgian lullaby “Megruli Nana” harkens back to the ancient goddess of light and fertility, called Nana in Western Georgian languages, who is asked to protect the infant as they drift into the dangerous place between wakefulness and dreamtime. Another Georgian song, “Es Ak’vani,” is sung as a circle-dancing chorus ritually lays a baby in his cradle for the first time. “Oj Jano, Jano,” from Macedonia, is almost an anti-lullaby, depicting a young husband asking his wife why they cannot conceive a child. The wife answers that when she was an infant, her mother cursed her with childlessness because she slept all day and wailed all night. “We really grappled with the idea of what the album would be like,” Kutulas explains. We went through a whole exploration, and settled upon a varied, dreamscape-like collection of songs”. 16

lthough wanted to learn how to fly to portray aviatrix in her new movie Amelia, it was 65-year old of Fayetteville, GA, crouched on the floor operating the controls as Hilary taxied on a runway for the cameras. And he even doubled for her wearing a blond wig and scarf in the flight scenes. It was Joe’s own plane (a Lockheed 12A Electra Junior) that was used in the movie, which he lovingly restored over a period of 18 years. Earhart flew a Lockheed 10 on her fateful 1937 journey, but Joe’s plane was the closest match the movie producers could find. The filmmakers painted his plane to look more like Amelia’s, and he was amazed at (and grateful for) how easily it all came off after filming was done.

rime Outlets Orlando is known for shoppers getting great deals on luxury items at brand-name stores, but now it is also becoming known for being home to a terrific new nonchain Italian restaurant, Venito Ristorante. This is not just a convenient spot for shoppers, but a delectable dining destination in itself. Chef Raffaele Marsilio serves up classic Italian dishes, but with his own twist. He grew up in Italy with a mother that cooked for her village’s wealthy families

For our entrees we chose a chicken and a steak dish. Vinito’s Chicken Francese is a chef specialty. Chicken medallions are lightly battered and sauteed, and served on Linguine alla Marinara. long with festive sights, a major part of the holidays is aromatic smells. From evergreens to the holiday meal, the holidays offer a feast for the eyes as well as the nose. Some of the most popular scents derive from holiday decorations like fruit wreaths, citrus pomanders, and garlands. The models for these luscious holiday elements all have roots in art history. The art of Renaissance master, Luca della Robbia served as the impetus for today’s version of the holiday fruit wreath, also known as the della Robbia wreath. Della Robbia’s religious paintings and architectural medallions from the 1400s were often highlighted with fruit wreaths and decorative garlands of green and red apples, berries, pineapples, and oranges. Based on these works of Renaissance decoration, the della Robbia style wreath was reintroduced during the late 1800s in a period known as the Renaissance Revival.

Like apples, pineapples were symbolic fruits associated with the season. The pineapple represented the tradition of hospitality at the holiday time and all year long. The hospitable pineapple form was typically carved into Chippendale and Federal furniture including bedposts, mantles, and dining room sideboards, too. Today, pineapples are the fruit of choice for home décor items ranging from silver candelabras to welcome mats. Like fruit wreaths, fruit pyramids and pomanders dating back to the Colonial period were among the delights of a holiday home. Scents of fresh fruit and spices lingered from the table top fruit pyramids suggesting architectural examples in miniature. And, in the 19th Century, sweet smelling fruit pomanders had yet to be relegated to the hall closet, but instead were prominently hung front and center in a Victorian home’s entry foyer. Enhanced with whole cloves, orange or lemon pomanders were suspended over doorways and in stairwells. Traditionally, fruit wreaths were lovingly hung on the exterior doors of homes at holiday time. The type of fruit chosen for such living wreaths proved symbolic. For instance ornamental apples symbolized the family in art history and this fruit played a major role in holiday decorations. Apple ring wreaths were associated with the Holy Family and the Nativity. Other related wreaths featured fruits such as lemons, pineapples, and oranges. Also, these fruit wreaths gave the winter greenery a bright, colorful contrast. Fruits often appear in the paintings, prints, architectural, and furniture designs of the 18th and 19th centuries based on Renaissance iconography. Wreaths made of whole lemons symbolized friendship and gave holiday wreaths their bright color. For the holidays, fruit remind us of the bountiful harvest and the joy of sharing those crops with family and friends. In colonial America, fruit wreaths, pyramids, and pomanders were popular in holiday homes. These antique holiday handicrafts not only smelled delightful with the scents of apple, clove, and citrus, but they were pretty, natural additions to the interior decor. The pleasing aroma of the fruit decoration allowed the pomander to maintain a prominent place among holiday decorations. Happy holidays!

had their own water tower, and their own sprinkler system throughout the hotel which is still used today. After going through many transitions through the years — even abandonment for eleven years — the hotel was refurbished four years ago yet has managed to retain it’s charm of old. What used to be two small guest rooms that shared a bathroom is now a suite with a living room and bedroom. New cherry wood floors were laid throughout, but the wonderful old beams in the ceiling in the dining room are original to the hotel, and came from foundered ships at sea. When the hotel was built, it provided travelers an affordable alternative to the Flagler Hotels of the time. But it it’s heyday, it did play host to movie stars and VIPs as well as the infamous. Reportedly Al Capone hoisted a glass with “Machine Gun” Kelly in the hotel’s bar. Of course, the hotel has it’s resident ghost (or two). If you’re into the spirit world, stay in room 206! There is a clear grassy area next to the hotel that once held a salt water pool. Throughout the hotel are wonderful old photos of the Casa during the years, and you can see people frolicking in the pool and old 20’s cars riding along the beach. The hotel today does not have a pool, but who needs one with the ocean steps away? The relatively small hotel staff goes

out of its way to please their guests, and whatever they don’t have on property, they will set up for you. Spa services can easily be arranged, and watersports and beach

The charm, intimacy and ocean front location of this lovely old hotel is what makes it a desirable wedding destination, as well as the efficiency of the staff, who have weddings and events down pat. Indeed, 60% of the hotel’s business is weddings. When we visited, the staff took us through a wedding set-up, and you could see they really had their act together. Liz Stewart, the Floral Designer has been doing flowers for 20 years, and she passed a few words of wisdom on to us. She likes to use orchids for their staying power, and their sustainability in heat. Also, with lilacs — or anything with a woody stem — she said to pound the stem and flatten it, and it will draw up water better. She avoids tulips and gardenias since they don’t last. Most wedding couples choose Casa’s recommendations for their wedding plans because they are tried and true, which would include the DJ skills of Carlton McGee, the artistic photos by Damon Photography, and the very yummy and clever cakes by Carol and John Krupinski of Classic Cakes. the hotel will set up a sunrise yoga session for you with Heather Hixon from Time To Unwind. Although we tend to be night people, we forced ourselves up at the crack of dawn, and were grateful for the experience. The sunrise over the ocean was beautiful, and the pristine beach was quiet, with only the occasional cry of a seabird and the sound of the surf. The 1,300 ft. fishing pier by the property only had a few strollers enjoying the morning air. Heather took us through some moves which both relaxed and exhilarated us at the same time. Roy Miller scanned the stacks of cereal in front of him, taking several seconds before selecting the box he wanted and placing it in a nearby shopping basket. He then continued down the aisle towards the canned goods, where he searched for fruits and vegetables that would complement a hearty supper. Miller, rookie defensive tackle for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, wasn’t walking the aisles of a local grocery store, however, and in fact he wasn’t even shopping for himself. All the food he selected would go to a grateful patron of the “Metro Market,” thanks to the generosity of the Bay area community and a little shopping assistance from Miller and a dozen of his fellow rookie Buccaneers. The 13 Buccaneers Rookie Club members were on hand at Metropolitan Ministries in Tampa recently to help prepare for the

Ministries’ “Holiday Assistance Program,” a huge holidayseason effort that provides food, toys and other services to the less-fortunate members of the Tampa Bay community. Miller was joined by cornerbacks Brandon Anderson and E.J. Biggers, center Jonathan Compas, safety Emanuel Cook, tackle Demar Dotson, offensive lineman Marc Dile, defensive end Maurice Evans, quarterback Josh Freeman, tackle Xavier Fulton, cornerback Mike Mickens, fullback Chris Pressley, tight end Ryan Purvis and wide receiver Sammie Stroughter, The group of rookies spent several hours at the Ministries on Tuesday afternoon taking part in what has become an annual Thanksgiving tradition for the newest group of Buccaneers. The group first reported to a collection of huge tents dubbed the “Holiday Center,” which houses the community outreach effort. The players then spent an hour checking in clients, serving snacks, moving boxes of supplies and sorting the various

types of foods and other goods into their assigned areas. The Holiday program will last through Christmas. Needy members of the Tampa Bay community can register with Metropolitan Ministries to take part and can benefit in a number of ways. Under the large tents, families and individuals will be able to visit a grocery store-style area full of shelves of various food and pick what they like to eat, or instead opt for pre-packaged boxes stuffed with all types of food. They can also pick up a holiday turkey or chicken to enjoy, receive a warm meal on Thanksgiving, get a medical checkup, select donated toys to give as gifts to their children, enjoy various forms of entertainment to lift their holiday spirits, and much more. In fact, the overall effort is expected to serve more than 30,000 families and help more than 150,000 less-fortunate individuals before all is said and done – something that not only

impressed the Buccaneers volunteers but served as an inspiration. “We got a special group of guys, the rookies,” said Miller. “Guys who work hard on the field – and as you can see, they work just as hard off the field, coming out here supporting the community. I think it does good for our program and the future of our program. The community gets to see the young guys and these are the type of things we like to do. We’re just trying to change and continue to shape our image. We’re a young group as a team and we just want to continue molding our image in a positive way in the community.” setting a whole new standard for the rookie class. I believe in Santa Claus and I believe in the Bucs. I know, I know, I’m a dreamer but sometimes dreams do come true. This won’t be the year the dream comes true, but within the next few years the Bucs will be back on top. The problems that the team is having this year didn’t just start; they have been building up for several years. Everything came to a head this year; someone changed the entire dynamics of the team..Out went the old and in came the new; new coaches, new GM new players. Wasn’t anyone good enough to stay? A few players were kept , thank goodness. Why did so many people have to go? The team seemed to have the money to get what they needed, they are way under cap. Is lack of money the reason for the poor performance? I don’t know but someone should know. Would more money spent in players produce better

stats? That seems logical but again, who knows. I think that we should give the team our support. Rome wasn’t built in a day and you can’t get a Super Bowl team in one season either. The new crew at the top seem very dedicated. The new kids on the block seem very good. Will some of them turn out to some of the great ones? I hope so. Will some of them turn out to be flops? Perhaps. And mayabe some of the players that the team acquires will go on to greatness. Some of the veterans are better than ever, the old guys ( isn’t amazing that we call someone in their 30’s old?) are helping the new kids to grow and learn. Some of the Baby Bucs have shown flashes of brilliance…It will eventually all be good. Just have faith in the team and keep supporting them, even when they stink. I saw too many “fans” fleeing the stands during the Saint’s game. Shame on you “Fickle Fans .Every team has poor seasons. This is our time to be in a bad place, but hang in there. The Bucs will rise again. They will be on the top of the hill. BELIEVE! Go Bucs.
