FUNUNDRUM Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey presents FUNundrum at the St. Pete Times Forum, Jan 6-10. It’s a celebration of P. T. Barnum so big, it is an event 200 years in the making. Hop aboard and go on an unbelievable excursion that brings together performers and characters from exotic countries all over the world - even from places for which there are no geographic borders. From the moment that you arrive, the momentum explodes as The Greatest Show On Earth comes to life in a way that can only be inspired by the greatest showman who ever lived. Thrill-seekers may pay for the entire seat, but will only need its edge as a rip-roaring motorcycle troupe performs an incredible feat where seven motorcyclists brave fear and physics in the 16-foot Spherical Miracle. Height-seeking high-wire artists perform atop a wire no wider than your thumb 40 feet in the air, all while at a 45 degree angle. Masters of Musculature use their bodies in the ultimate test to see how far the human body can be pushed in a mind-blowing world of distortion and contortion. And what would Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey be without the funomenal animals leading the way? Barnum’s FUNundrum features fangtastic tigers, esteemed elephants, prancing ponies, horses and goats that authenticate the affinity between animals and humans. Call 813-287-8844 for more information, or visit www.ringling.com.

The Haunting, Intimate World Of Eastern European Lullabies

T

he mother, the cradle, the voice, and the universe. Melodies born to the joys and sorrows of families from villages in the Russian Far North to Armenia and Greece. This is the lullaby as revealed by America’s preeminent Eastern European vocal ensemble, Kitka. Their latest album, Cradle Songs, is a gentle journey through the traditions that shaped young dreams along the eastern edges of Europe, and a song-cycle that embraces the ensemble’s personal memories of childhood. The pastel hush-a-bye ditties many in the West associate with lullabies and children’s songs are a world away from the pensive, magic-steeped, and sometimes dark songs sung over the cradles in Slavic, Balkan and Caucasian cultures. “These songs were not only about putting a baby to sleep, they summon something bigger, something cosmic,” muses Kitka singer Shira Cion. “We wanted to create something different than a purely sweet and sentimental album. We envisioned an album that captured

all the depth and dimensions of motherhood.” “At first, I found these lullabies really challenging,” reflects Kitka singer Janet Kutulas. “They seemed almost inaccessibly dark. But the more you listen to them, the more and more beautiful they become. They aren’t your stereotypical tra-la-la lullaby.” The Georgian lullaby “Megruli Nana” harkens back to the ancient goddess of light and fertility, called Nana in Western Georgian languages, who is asked to protect the infant as they drift into the dangerous place between wakefulness and dreamtime. Another Georgian song, “Es Ak’vani,” is sung as a circle-dancing chorus ritually lays a baby in his cradle for the first time. “Oj Jano, Jano,” from Macedonia, is almost an anti-lullaby, depicting a young husband asking his wife why they cannot conceive a child. The wife answers that when she was an infant, her mother cursed her with childlessness because she slept all day and wailed all night. “We really grappled with the idea of what the album would be like,” Kutulas explains. We went through a whole exploration, and settled upon a varied, dreamscape-like collection of songs”. 16

AT THE MOVIES

H

mmm. Does Cinébistro go under the “FOOD & BEVERAGE” or the “AT THE MOVIES” section of Accent On Tampa Bay magazine? It is equally at home in both categories. This most delightful concept in theater/ dining has just opened up in Hyde Park Village, which should bring new life to the neighborhood. An evening of dinner and a movie has taken on a bold new face with Cinébistro, and once you experience it, you won’t want to go back to the same old same old. Imagine an upscale casual eatery and a Plush seating and handy swivel trays. comfortable lounge and a state-of-the-art movie theater all in one. Nationally known, and well-established Cobb Theaters has boldly gone where no one has gone before in presenting Cinébistro. This experience is not to be confused with the card table/folding chair set up with drop down screen, and hot dog dinners of some “dining cinemas”. This is light-years ahead and many levels up. When you pass through the cinema doors and into the lobby, the ticket desk is low key and the area beyond is a modern, softly lit, lounge and bar. Attractive brick and steel hallways along the sides take you to one of six theaters, where you can watch popular first run movies in oversized leather rocking chairs with wide arm rests (no longer a fight over who gets the armrest first). Each plush chair has a swing out polished wood tray with a deep cupholder. The theater operates much like live theater, in that when you purchase a ticket, you choose the seat you want to sit in. You can do it on line, or at the theater. A seating chart pops up, and you pick the seat from whatever is still available for that showing. When you arrive, a host will take you to your seat.

NOVEMBER

The concept is that patrons arrive 30 minutes before their selected movie, and order dinner from a tantalizing menu. Your food and beverage are brought to your seat by a waiter. The theater has a choice wine list and some signature house drinks, such as a Watermelon Mojito, Raspberry Bliss Martini, and a Coconut Rum Lovebug. You don’t have to order food if you don’t wish, you can just enjoy the movie experience. The food is all fresh, prepared right on property, and brought to you by Chef Mike Lopez. Mr. Lopez comes to Chef Mike Lopez the Tampa Bay area from Las Vegas, having worked at New York New York Casino Hotel, and the Grand Luxe Restaurants at the Venetian. The menu is well selected, with diverse dishes, great desserts, and assorted coffees and teas. There is also a concession stand if you come in late. You can order your food, receive a pager, and pick up your food when it’s ready. Once the film starts, no waiters will be in the theater. And yes, you can still get candy and popcorn (which happens to be the BEST you’ve probably ever had). Don’t want to see a Inviting lobby and dining spot. movie, but would like to have a bite to eat, or have a drink in comfortable surroundings? Cinébistro is also the place to go, as their lounge area is open to the public. Soon to be on tap, is a selfdispensing wine bar in the lounge area. To seal the deal as a great date night destination, the age limit for Cinébistro is 21 plus. The theater will, on occasion, have family matinees when certain types of films are being shown. Cinébistro is located at 1600 Swann Ave., Hyde Park Village. For more information, visit www.cobbcinebistro.com

And he even doubled for her wearing a blond wig and scarf in the flight scenes. It was Joe’s own plane (a Lockheed 12A Electra Junior) that was used in the movie, which he lovingly restored over a period of 18 years. Earhart flew a Lockheed 10 on her fateful 1937 journey, but Joe’s plane was the closest match the movie producers could find. The filmmakers painted his plane to look more like Amelia’s, and he was amazed at (and grateful for) how easily it all came off after filming was done.

VINITO RISTORANTE A Prime Restaurant At Prime Outlets Orlando Story and photos by Melissa Wolcott and Al Martino

P

rime Outlets Orlando is known for shoppers getting great deals on luxury items at brand-name stores, but now it is also becoming known for being home to a terrific new nonchain Italian restaurant, Venito Ristorante. This is not just a convenient spot for shoppers, but a delectable dining destination in itself. Chef Raffaele Marsilio serves up classic Italian dishes, but with his own twist. He grew up in Italy with a mother that cooked for her village’s wealthy families

for varietal wines.) They are particularly known for their Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay. The wines we tasted were quite lovely, but I must recommend you start your evening off with Venito’s signature drink, “Lemondrop Martini” — very smooth. My table mates and I were enjoying our appetizers so much, we barely had room for our main courses. Portions are hefty, so thank Vinit’s signature martini, the goodness for take-home boxes. A table favorite “LemonDrop”. appetizer was the delicately battered Calamari Fritti served with Arrabbiata Sauce, and also the brick-oven toasted Bruschetta. Both were gone in a flash. For our entrees we chose a chicken and a steak dish. Vinito’s Chicken Francese is a chef specialty. Chicken medallions are lightly battered and sauteed, and served on Linguine alla Marinara. With their Tagliata Toscana, Chef Marsilio grills and slices New York Strip Steak, and serves it with Rosemary Roasted Potatoes and Arugula Salad, with Shaved

for lunch and dinner. Entree prices range from $13-$24, and lunch items range from $5-$11. The restaurant’s interior decor is attractive Tuscan-Modern done up in earth tones. Tagliata Toscana, New York Strip Steak.

Parmesan and Aged Balsamic. Both dishes were devine, and required take-home boxes for a delicious lunch the next day. Desserts are always hard to choose, so we picked three to share, and all were superb. A lot of menus claim “New York-style” cheesecake, but they rarely are. Vinito got it right this is the real deal. The Tiramisu was also just perfect, very light and not too “rummy”, and the Carrot Cake was fresh and moist. Again, clean plates! The restaurant also serves soup, sandwiches, salads and pizza, as they are open daily www.AccentOnTampaBay.com

Outdoor dining is also available. Vinito Ristorante is located at 4971 International Drive, Orlando. Valet parking is available right in front of the restaurant. ore than likely, you have a friend who is the consummate hostess. Every party she hosts seems to have the perfect balance of ambience, food, conversation and of course, cocktails. So what do you get the hostess who already is (and has) the mostess? The Bubbly Bar: Champagne and Sparkling Wine Cocktails for Every Occasion — and a basket full of goodies to go with it. Flip through the book and find ingredients she may not have on hand like, PAMA Pomegranate Liqueur, Tuaca and Chambord. Package the book and the liqueur in an attractive basket. PAMA captures the complex, sweet yet tart taste and seductive ruby color of allnatural pomegranates. PAMA is made with all-natural pomegranate juice, premium vodka and a touch of imported tequila. Bottled at just 34 proof, it is highly mixable, from the simple — PAMA and Champagne — to the sublime — PAMA Mojito. Tuaca is a brandy-based Italian liqueur inspired by the Renaissance period of the 16th century. According to legend, it was created for Lorenzo the Magnificent, ruler of Florence, Italy. Lorenzo was a well-known patron of the arts, supporting Michaelangelo, da Vinci and Botticelli. In 1938, Gaetano Tuoni and Giorgio Canepa took inspiration from the Renaissance-era recipe and created Tuaca — a striking blend of vanilla, distilled essences of Mediterranean lemon and orange, and rich Tuscan brandies. Where would the martini be without vermouth? Exactly. Carpano Antica Formula is a perfect vermouth, with its warming flavors of vanilla, dried fruit and orange peel. It will delight even the most dis-

criminating aficionado. Sweet vermouth has become an essential in any well-stocked bar. Carpano Antica Formula, based on a recipe created in 1786 in Turin, Italy, is the original and is now available in the U.S. The founding distiller, Antonio Benedetto Carpano (1764-1815), named his new product after the German word for wormwood, Wermut. The Antica Formula draws on more than 30 different herbs and spices. The authenticity of this Italian vermouth is enhanced by the handsome packaging, a replica of the original 18th century label and liter bottle. Each blown bottle is numbered and finished with a traditional cork and red seal. Carpano Antica Formula won a Double Gold medal at this year’s San Francisco World Spirits Competition. The Dalmore, with its stag’s head logo, is perfect for the outdoorsmen (or women). Whether they’re hunting for waterfowl or Waterford, people will warm up to this gift after the first sip. From the basic 12Year-Old to the limited edition 1263 King Alexander, The Dalmore just makes life better. Since 1839, The Dalmore distillery has been producing some of the finest Single Malt Whiskies in the world. Located on the banks of the Cromarty Firth in the Highlands of Scotland, the distillery continues to produce spirit that is revered by experts everywhere. Aging in Spanish oak sherry casks, the wood delivers aromas of Seville citrus orange, dried fruits and aromatic spices to the spirits, while American white oak barrels, previously infused with fine bourbon, bestow an elegant sweetness of vanilla, toffee, coconut and fresh vitality of fruit.

long with festive sights, a major part of the holidays is aromatic smells. From evergreens to the holiday meal, the holidays offer a feast for the eyes as well as the nose. Some of the most popular scents derive from holiday decorations like fruit wreaths, citrus pomanders, and garlands. The models for these luscious holiday elements all have roots in art history. The art of Renaissance master, Luca della Robbia served as the impetus for today’s version of the holiday fruit wreath, also known as the della Robbia wreath. Della Robbia’s religious paintings and architectural medallions from the 1400s were often highlighted with fruit wreaths and decorative garlands of green and red apples, berries, pineapples, and oranges. Based on these works of Renaissance decoration, the della Robbia style wreath was reintroduced during the late 1800s in a period known as the Renaissance Revival.

Like apples, pineapples were symbolic fruits associated with the season. The pineapple represented the tradition of hospitality at the holiday time and all year long. The hospitable pineapple form was typically carved into Chippendale and Federal furniture including bedposts, mantles, and dining room sideboards, too. Today, pineapples are the fruit of choice for home décor items ranging from silver candelabras to welcome mats. Like fruit wreaths, fruit pyramids and pomanders dating back to the Colonial period were among the delights of a holiday home. Scents of fresh fruit and spices lingered from the table top fruit pyramids suggesting architectural examples in miniature. And, in the 19th Century, sweet smelling fruit pomanders had yet to be relegated to the hall closet, but instead were prominently hung front and center in a Victorian home’s entry foyer. Enhanced with whole cloves, orange or lemon pomanders were suspended over doorways and in stairwells. Made by pushing cloves into whole oranges or other citA traditional della Robbia style fruit wreath featuring symbolic holiday fruits.

Traditionally, fruit wreaths were lovingly hung on the exterior doors of homes at holiday time. The type of fruit chosen for such living wreaths proved symbolic. For instance ornamental apples symbolized the family in art history and this fruit played a major role in holiday decorations. Apple ring wreaths were associated with the Holy Family and the Nativity. Other related wreaths featured fruits such as lemons, pineapples, and oranges. Also, these fruit wreaths gave the winter greenery a bright, colorful contrast. Fruits often appear in the paintings, prints, architectural, and furniture designs of the 18th and 19th centuries based on Renaissance iconography. Wreaths made of whole lemons symbolized friendship and gave holiday wreaths their bright color. For the holidays, fruit remind us of the bountiful harvest and the joy of sharing those crops with family and friends. rus fruits, a pomander was a welcomed gift for any hostess. They were used in the 1700s and 1800s to ward off foul odors that were thought to bring illness into a home in wintertime. In colonial America, fruit wreaths, pyramids, and pomanders were popular in holiday homes. These antique holiday handicrafts not only smelled delightful with the scents of apple, clove, and citrus, but they were pretty, natural additions to the interior decor. The pleasing aroma of the fruit decoration allowed the pomander to maintain a prominent place among holiday decorations. Happy holidays!

BEAUTY & FASHION

Ultra Emollient

Y

ou may have heard the term “elastin” at the skin care counter. But what is elastin? Why is it so critical for younger-looking skin? Elastin is the protein that gives skin its “bounce.” Elastin stops being produced in our teens. Existing elastin then starts to degenerate from age and sun exposure. The result is elastosis, in which there is a loss of function in the skin’s elastin. This causes skin to wrinkle and sag.

The skin’s ability to produce elastin is the new focus in anti-aging. Recent clinical studies prove that functional elastin is the key to tighter, firmer, more youthful skin. However, consumers should be aware of the difference between functional elastin and elastin fragments. Functional elastin is a long, healthy elastic fiber capable of rebounding, like a rubber band. In contrast, elastin fragments are much shorter. Similar to chopped up rubber bands, they are incapable of springing back. Relastin is the only product that clinically demonstrates the ability to increase functional elastin. Anti-aging cream, Relastin Ultra Emollient is a rich moisturizer, super hydrating, and is the secret to soft, supple skin that is firm and smooth — not dry, wrinkled and saggy. Relastin is a cocktail of Vitamin A, Vitamin C and peptides to stimulate production and smooth surface lines. For more information, visit www.relastin.com.

After going through many transitions through the years — even abandonment for eleven years — the hotel was refurbished four years ago yet has managed to retain it’s charm of old. What used to be two small guest rooms that shared a bathroom is now a suite with a living room and bedroom. New cherry wood floors were laid throughout, but the wonderful old beams in the ceiling in the dining room are original to the hotel, and came from foundered ships at sea. When the hotel was built, it provided travelers an affordable alternative to the Flagler Hotels of the time. But it it’s heyday, it did play host to movie stars and VIPs as well as the infamous. Reportedly Al Capone hoisted a glass with “Machine Gun” Kelly in the hotel’s bar. Of course, the hotel has it’s resident ghost (or two). If you’re into the spirit world, stay in room 206! There is a clear grassy area next to the hotel that once held a salt water pool. Throughout the hotel are wonderful old photos of the Casa during the years, and you can see people frolicking in the pool and old 20’s cars riding along the beach. the hotel will set up a sunrise yoga session for you with Heather Hixon from Time To Unwind. Although we tend to be night people, we forced ourselves up at the crack of dawn, and were grateful for the experience. The sunrise over the ocean was beautiful, and the pristine beach was quiet, with only the occasional cry of a seabird and the sound of the surf. The 1,300 ft. fishing pier by the property only had a few strollers enjoying the morning air. Heather took us through some moves which both relaxed and exhilarated us at the same time. Maybe we should reconsider being night people. Although the Casa is a restful place, it www.AccentOnTampaBay.com

This beautiful coffee table book recreates the triumph of American arms against the vaunted Nazi war machine’s desperate “all in” attack in one of history’s greatest battles. In harrowing images, the book revisits the only destruction of an American division in Europe in World War II–the 106th Infantry Division. It shows us the air forces, armored forces, and infantry on both sides thrown into the Bulge–nearly a million men. The result is a brilliant pictorial account of one of the greatest battles of all time. www.zenithpress.com Throughout history, courageous men have demonstrated their prowess in battle and indefatigable fighting spirit through episodes of human sacrifice and displays of extreme loyalty. The Immortals tells the remarkable stories of these intrepid forces, providing both an overview of history’s major conflicts and an exploration of the tenacity of the human spirit, presented in a beautiful coffee table book format. www.zenithpress.com

Going beyond the usual accounting, Hopkins investigates the strategies, politics, and personalities that shaped the conduct of the war. His regional approach to this complex war conducted on land, sea (and significantly by America, undersea), and air offers a more realistic perspective on how this multifaceted conflict unfolded-in many ways, and on many fronts. As expansive as the immense reaches of the Pacific, and as focused as the most intensive pinpoint attack on a strategic island, this account offers a whole new way of understanding the hows and whys of the Pacific War. www.zenithpress.com

Brütal Legend is an action-adventure that marries visceral action combat with open-world freedom. Roy Miller scanned the stacks of cereal in front of him, taking several seconds before selecting the box he wanted and placing it in a nearby shopping basket. He then continued down the aisle towards the canned goods, where he searched for fruits and vegetables that would complement a hearty supper. Miller, rookie defensive tackle for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, wasn’t walking the aisles of a local grocery store, however, and in fact he wasn’t even shopping for himself. All the food he selected would go to a grateful patron of the “Metro Market,” thanks to the generosity of the Bay area community and a little shopping assistance from Miller and a dozen of his fellow rookie Buccaneers. The 13 Buccaneers Rookie Club members were on hand at Metropolitan Ministries in Tampa recently to help prepare for the

Ministries’ “Holiday Assistance Program,” a huge holidayseason effort that provides food, toys and other services to the less-fortunate members of the Tampa Bay community. Miller was joined by cornerbacks Brandon Anderson and E.J. Biggers, center Jonathan Compas, safety Emanuel Cook, tackle Demar Dotson, offensive lineman Marc Dile, defensive end Maurice Evans, quarterback Josh Freeman, tackle Xavier Fulton, cornerback Mike Mickens, fullback Chris Pressley, tight end Ryan Purvis and wide receiver Sammie Stroughter, The group of rookies spent several hours at the Ministries on Tuesday afternoon taking part in what has become an annual Thanksgiving tradition for the newest group of Buccaneers. The group first reported to a collection of huge tents dubbed the “Holiday Center,” which houses the community outreach effort. The players then spent an hour checking in clients, serving snacks, moving boxes of supplies and sorting the various

types of foods and other goods into their assigned areas. The Holiday program will last through Christmas. Needy members of the Tampa Bay community can register with Metropolitan Ministries to take part and can benefit in a number of ways. Under the large tents, families and individuals will be able to visit a grocery store-style area full of shelves of various food and pick what they like to eat, or instead opt for pre-packaged boxes stuffed with all types of food. They can also pick up a holiday turkey or chicken to enjoy, receive a warm meal on Thanksgiving, get a medical checkup, select donated toys to give as gifts to their children, enjoy various forms of entertainment to lift their holiday spirits, and much more. In fact, the overall effort is expected to serve more than 30,000 families and help more than 150,000 less-fortunate individuals before all is said and done – something that not only

impressed the Buccaneers volunteers but served as an inspiration. “We got a special group of guys, the rookies,” said Miller. “Guys who work hard on the field – and as you can see, they work just as hard off the field, coming out here supporting the community. I think it does good for our program and the future of our program. The community gets to see the young guys and these are the type of things we like to do. We’re just trying to change and continue to shape our image. We’re a young group as a team and we just want to continue molding our image in a positive way in the community.” setting a whole new standard for the rookie class. We’re going to be something to be reckoned with. And the rookie class that we have, we’d like to compare it to [those of] Ronde Barber and Derrick Brooks and hopefully in due time we can show the community and show everybody what we’re working for.”

I believe in Santa Claus and I believe in the Bucs. I know, I know, I’m a dreamer but sometimes dreams do come true. This won’t be the year the dream comes true, but within the next few years the Bucs will be back on top. The problems that the team is having this year didn’t just start; they have been building up for several years. Everything came to a head this year; someone changed the entire dynamics of the team..Out went the old and in came the new; new coaches, new GM new players. Wasn’t anyone good enough to stay? A few players were kept , thank goodness. Why did so many people have to go? The team seemed to have the money to get what they needed, they are way under cap. Is lack of money the reason for the poor performance? I don’t know but someone should know. Would more money spent in players produce better

stats? That seems logical but again, who knows. I think that we should give the team our support. Rome wasn’t built in a day and you can’t get a Super Bowl team in one season either. The new crew at the top seem very dedicated. The new kids on the block seem very good. Will some of them turn out to some of the great ones? I hope so. Will some of them turn out to be flops? Perhaps. And mayabe some of the players that the team acquires will go on to greatness. Some of the veterans are better than ever, the old guys ( isn’t amazing that we call someone in their 30’s old?) are helping the new kids to grow and learn. Some of the Baby Bucs have shown flashes of brilliance…It will eventually all be good. Just have faith in the team and keep supporting them, even when they stink. I saw too many “fans” fleeing the stands during the Saint’s game. Shame on you “Fickle Fans .Every team has poor seasons. This is our time to be in a bad place, but hang in there. The Bucs will rise again. They will be on the top of the hill. BELIEVE! Go Bucs.
