LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS - thru July 17
A down-and out skid row floral assistant becomes an overnight sensation when he discovers an exotic plant with a mysterious craving for fresh blood. Soon “Audrey II” grows into an ill-tempered, foul-mouthed, R&B-singing carnivore who offers him fame and fortune in exchange for feeding its growing appetite, finally revealing itself to be an alien creature poised for global domination. One of the longest-running Off-Broadway shows of all time, this affectionate spoof of 1950s sci-fi movies has become a house-hold name, thanks to a highly successful film version and a score by the songwriting team of Howard Ashman and Alan Menken, who redefined the animated musical film with Disney’s “The Little Mermaid”, “Beauty and the Beast” and “Aladdin.” Charming, tuneful and hilarious, with tongue firmly planted in cheek, Little Shop Of Horrors never fails to entertain.
BREAKING UP IS HARD TO DO: THE NEIL SEDAKA MUSICAL - July 22 August 21 Neil Sedaka’s back again in Breaking Up Is Hard To Do, the entertaining new musical which features his most famous hits from the 1950s, 60s, and 70s. This enduring story presents over nineteen of Neil Sedaka’s greatest hits, spun together in a lighthearted tale of mistaken identity, friendship and love. Like its fellow “jukebox musicals” Mamma Mia and All Shook Up (which built plots around the music of ABBA and Elvis), Breaking Up Is Hard To Do concocts a hit-based tale, this one taking place on an early 1960s Labor Day Weekend at “Esther’s Paradise Resort” in New York’s famed Catskill Mountains. This all-new musical hit includes some of Sedaka’s best standards like Love Will Keep us Together, Laughter in the Rain, Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen, Calendar Girl, Where the Boys Are, and Breaking Up is Hard to Do. OPENING SEASON 2011-2012 IN THE CHANNEL DISTRICT A sensation in New York, composer David Friedman brings his Off-Broadway hit to Tampa with a local Tampa cast. A cabaret evening of inspirational songs will open Stageworks new theatre in The Channel District.
By Rajiv Joseph, this hot, new play follows the bizarre wounds that chart your life. Dark but humorous, it balances youthful exhuberance with raw tenderness. Doug is a daredevil jock with a bit of a death wish; Kayleen’s injuries are more internal and crushing to the soul. Broken hearts and broken bones draw them close but it is the undercurrent of yearning that leads them to find the healing power of love. Quirky and poignant.
By David Hare, a contemporary riff on the oncebanned La Ronde, an exploration of lust, class and the power of sex. A sensation in London and New York, this scandalous play is full of erotic energy as one actor and one actress play all ten partners in a continuous daisy chain of sexual liaisons. Funny. Razor sharp.
Winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 1983, this high stakes drama is a beautiful yet devastating depiction of a mother and daughter in crisis. With humor amid vibrant emotional honesty, it is a penetrating examination of helplessness Eloquent and touching. A stunning theatre piece.
A story that speaks to the very heart of American integrity. A tender portrait of a southern town, brimming with powerful lessons of tolerance, justice and quiet heroism and a message of fighting for what is right. Book by Harper Lee. 1961 Pulitzer Prize for fiction.
By Neil Simon. Biloxi is the second play in the “Eugene” Trilogy! Social, racial and ethnic issues are tackled with Simon’s superb comic timing as Eugene is drafted to serve in WWII and comes of age in ARMY BOOT CAMP! Rich in both humor and ethical confrontation. Tony AWARD for best play: 1985.
By Howard Crabtree. In this side-splitting musical extravaganza, new heights of hilarity are reached in outrageous skits and over-the-top costumes. Smart, inventive lyrics match wits with sequins and feathers as an oldfashioned revue collides with a campy, gay send-up of Broadway musicals. 1996 Drama Desk Award for Best OffBroadway Musical. They saw an ad for a toy named “Goo Goo Doll” and that was it; they had found it. It wasn’t until 1998 that the group sky-rocketed to stardom with the chart-topping single from the film, City of Angels. “Iris” topped the charts for a record-breaking 18 weeks and ultimately earned the band three Grammy nominations and sealed their place in music history. With 14 top-10 singles and 9 million records sold in the United States, they’ve come a long way since declaring themselves the Goo Goo Dolls back in 1986. HOT CONCERTS
JOAN JETT at HARD ROCK CAFE - July 13 Iconic rock and roll innovator Joan Jett and the Blackhearts will perform in the new Hard Rock Cafe Tampa at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino on July 13 at 10 p.m. Doors open at 9 p.m. Joan Jett is an originator, an innovator and a visionary. As the leader of the hard-rocking Blackhearts, she’s had eight platinum and gold albums and nine Top 40 singles, including the classics “Bad Reputation,” “I Love Rock ‘N’ Roll,” “I Hate Myself For Loving You,” and “Crimson and Clover.” Jett was one of only two women named to Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 100 greatest guitar players of all time. Since co-founding the Runaways, the pioneering all-girl punk quintet, at age 15, Jett’s determination and drive have kept her in the public eye. Her profile skyrocketed, yet, again, with the recent release of the feature film of the same name based on lead singer Cherie Currie’s book Neon Angel. Jett served as an executive producer on the film. Her music has become a permanent force in mainstream culture. Faith Hill sings “I Hate Myself for Loving You” as the theme for NBC’s Sunday Night Football and “Bad Reputation” was the theme song for the “Hit Girl” heroine of the hit film, Kick Ass. Her cover of “Love is All Around” (the theme song of The Mary Tyler Moore Show) became an anthem in women’s sports and was used by the NCAA to promote the Women’s Final Four. Jett supplied theme songs for the ESPN X-Games premiere and has contributed music to all of their games since. Adding to Jett’s list of accomplishments is Blackheart Records, an independent label she founded with long time songwriting partner and producer Kenny Laguna, in 1980 which made her the first female artist to own and operate an independent record company. Blackheart Records is also currently home to such up-and-coming groups as San
Antonio-based female threesome Girl in A Coma and Los Angeles’ pop-punk trio the Dollyrots. The multi-talented Jett has acted in movies, including 1987’s Light of Day, and in the Tony-nominated Broadway musical, The Rocky Horror Picture Show. As a producer, she has overseen albums by Bikini Kill, Circus Lupus, as well as the Germs’ LA punk masterpiece, GI. Additionally, she is a spokesperson for PETA and a devoted supporter of the U.S. Military. For more information, call the Hard Rock Cafe Tampa at 813-627-7755. Must be 21 years of age or older.

JAM, REHEARSE, WRITE, RECORD AND PERFORM WITH TODAY’S TOP TOURING ROCKERS! THE ULTIMATE TRAVEL DESTINATION
Perform at the Playboy Mansion With Paul Stanley of KISS or Jam at the Woodstock Rock ‘n’ Roll Fantasy Camp
I
t’s a double fantasy and the ultimate travel destination as Rock ‘n’ Roll Fantasy Camp (www.RockCamp.com), the ultimate music-making experience that brings people together with their inner rock star, is back with two new star-studded destination camps. In August, relive the Woodstock experience at the home of the original Woodstock Festival with Leslie West and be the opening act for Blood Sweat and Tears, Tommy James and the Shondells, and The Family Stone. In November, fantasy meets fantasy when Paul Stanley, the co-founder and frontman of rock’s most iconic band KISS, is the head camper for a special Hollywood camp at the legendary Playboy Mansion. Rock ‘n’ Roll Fantasy Camp is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to jam with rock legends, write and perform an original song and play live. Now in its 14th year, the camp has hosted dozens of celebrity rock star counselors including Steven Tyler (Aerosmith), Roger Daltrey (The Who), Meat Loaf, Dicky Betts (The Allman Brothers Band), Brian Wilson (The Beach Boys), Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum (Both of Guns N’ Roses and Velvet Revolver), Lemmy Kilmister (Motorhead), Brett Michaels (Poison), Vince Neil (Motley Crue), Michael Anthony (Van Halen) and many more. “People come to Rock ‘n’ Roll Fantasy Camp from all walks of life,” said Rock ‘n’ Roll Fantasy Camp founder David Fishof. “It’s a joy to not only watch people come together in the name of music, but also to watch them accomplish things they never thought possible – both musically and in their personal lives. There’s a reason why 50 percent of our campers come back – it’s truly a transformative experience.” From August 12-14, campers can revisit the best of the 60s and 70s with Rock ‘n’ Roll Fantasy Camp’s New York experience. The weekend kicks off in New York City, where campers will meet their rock star counselors and bandmates, and rehearse in the amazing Gibson Rehearsal Studios, formerly the Record Plant. After rehearsing with guest stars including original Woodstock performer Leslie West, campers will travel to Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, the home of the original Woodstock festival. Not only will campers visit the sacred rock ‘n’ roll territory and explore Bethel Woods’ amazing museum dedicated to the original Woodstock festival, but they’ll be the opening act for Blood Sweat and Tears, Tommy James and the Shondells, and The Family Stone. This fantasy camp doesn’t get any better for someone who longs for the rock ‘n’ roll vibe of the 60s and 70s. On November 10-13, the Camp returns to Hollywood for a double fantasy jam at the legendary Playboy mansion where Paul Stanley of the iconic band KISS and a host of rock stars, entertainment and sports celebrities will gather and perform. “It’s a great thing, it’s a way for me to say thank you to a lot of people, but, nobody should think that this is just a joy for those people, and that they’re getting the thrill,” said Stanley, rock icon and, for 35 years, the unmistakable voice of the kings of bombast, KISS. “For me to get up and play with people who have that exuberance and energy, it’s really a gift to me as much as to anybody else,” said Paul Stanley, the co-founder and frontman of KISS.” In addition to the main camp, fans who opt instead to rock out for one-night only can purchase a ticket for the exclusive Final Night Party for a once-in-a-lifetime rock-n-roll jam. The evening features fullycatered grounds with Playboy Playmate hostesses, access to the world-famous grotto and private cabanas will be available too. This is also a great way to celebrate the experience with spouses and partners. For more information, or to register for a camp, visit www.RockAndRollFantasyCamp.com.

Legendary guitar virtuoso and world music pioneer AL DI MEOLA’s latest outing PURSUIT OF RADICAL RHAPSODY was years in the making. It showcases his mastery of complex rhythmic syncopation combined with provocative lyrical melodies and sophisticated harmony. Welsh alt-pop duo PAPER AEROPLANES’ debut effort, THE DAY WE RAN INTO THE SEA is a mixture of folk and acoustic elements laced the electric guitars and Celtic undertones (contributed to by producer Jon Reynolds, who’s worked with the likes of Sinead O’Connor). The album also features sonic contributions from Head (PJ Harvey), John Reynolds (Sinead O’Conner, Belinda Carlisle) and Matt Prime (Will Young, Kelly Clarkson, Natalie Imbruglia). Each song has a commercial pop sensibility topped off with poignant lyrics and vocalist Sarah Howells’ haunting ‘one of a kind’ voice. This eight-song mini-album takes songs by original British invaders The Rolling Stones and The Who, glam era stars like Slade, Brian Eno and Mott The Hoople as well as cult heroes The Move along with punk originators The Damned and the inimitable Sir Elton and dress them up in Hickoids drag to create a simmering, slamming slab of transatlantic rocking. www.hickoids.com
The quartet that LESLIE PINTCHIK has assembled for her third CD WE’RE HERE TO LISTEN (with Scott Hardy on bass, Mark Dodge on drums and percussionist Satoshi Takeishi) is one that really knows how to listen, both to each other and to the evolving narrative of the music they create together as an ensemble. The longevity of this quartet (12 years) and the deep musicianship of all four of its members allow the full range of Pintchik’s rather unusual voice as composer, arranger and pianist to emerge. The playlist includes a mix of seven strong originals, and three very intriguing arrangements of well known tunes. www.lesliepintchik.com With his new album, EZRA WEISS reaffirms his status as one of the premier young jazz pianists and composers of today. THE SHIRLEY HORN SUITE finds him heightening his sense of elevation and refinement in a trio format with up-and-coming string bassist Corcoran Holt and veteran drummer Steve Williams. The special guest vocalist is Shirley Nanette, a Pacific Northwest jazz legend. Weiss gives us his affectionate appreciation of Shirley Horn, an unforgettable pianist and singer whose way with beautiful melodies, harmonic coloration, and rhythm alterations made her the toast of the jazz world in the 1980s and ’90. Weiss’ Suite is a thing of beauty. Confident and relaxed, Weiss and his colleagues make the most of touch, space, dynamics, and phrasing. www.ezraweiss.com Music Trax continues on following page

n up-and-coming Tampa band getting lots of buzz is NOT TONIGHT JOSEPHINE, with a new fulllength release, All On The Horizon, recently hitting the stores. All On The Horizon is the band’s follow up to their 2009 EP, This Orphan Heart. The band teamed up with producer Brett Hestla (Creed, Dark New Day, Framing Hanley) in the studio for All On The Horizon. The new record, which builds upon This Orphan Heart’s pop-informed modern rock with more mature songwriting and a slightly darker bend, was recorded over the summer of 2010. Their single, a cover of Ace of Base’s popular tune ‘All That She Wants’, hit radio airwaves and iTunes in late March. Last year the band was selected for a main stage performance at the Florida Music Festival in April, shot a series of webisodes for Busch Gardens’ Howl-O-Scream festival, and nailed down a slot on WSUN 97X’s annual Next Big Thing concert in Tampa in December. NOT TONIGHT JOSEPHINE has performed with acts such as Anberlin, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Sick Puppies, Framing Hanley, A Day to Remember, Drowning Pool and American Bang and has been a part of events such as the XFC9 Fights in Tampa and NASCAR’s Ford Championship Weekend in Miami. With David Easlick up front on vocals, Evan Foley handling bass and backup vocals, guitars from Jake Moore and Adam Aungst, and Randy Ayers on drums, the Florida natives first came together in January of 2009. Having already amassed years of collective collaboration amongst four of the five members in previous bands around Central Florida’s rock and metal scene they took it upon themselves to saturate the state with their unique brand of melodic modern rock; spending the early part of the year playing any and every venue in the Tampa Bay area and many more throughout the state. Throughout 2010 the band quickly raised their status within rock’s up-and-coming scene. The band began writing what would become the debut full-length album that will be their introduction to the greater rock public. After returning to work with Brett Hestla in the studio during the summer and fall of 2010 the band is greatly anticipating their fans old and new hearing what they created this time around. All On The Horizon is a major step forward. The first single, “Carousel,” released last fall and it’s “Dexter”-inspired video has been leaving fans bloodthirsty for more music ever since. Although the CD resembles a live recording, there was no audience except his recording engineer Brian Masterson. During the tenhour session, Johnston played each tune once or twice, and later there was no overdubbing, editing or combining of takes. As evening came on, he had the lights turned off for the last half of the session. Every melody on The Shape of Things was composed in advance, but during the recording session Johnston improvised on each tune. This solo piano will have appeal with the new age and neo-classical music fans. www.joshjohnston.com MIHO: JOURNEY TO THE MOUNTAIN was recorded in Japan’s Miho Museum (designed by I.M. All serve to form a shifting, meditative image of paradise found and reflected in the glass and steel of a great architect, in the warp and clay of ancient artisans. The Gaia Hypothesis is earth as a living being, with all cultures interconnected and related. Gaia takes the listener on a sonic world tour into the soul of our planet. WORLD JIENAT’s release, MIRA, was recorded on a Finnish island in an old parish hall, putting age-old sounds in a cutting-edge frame. Drawing on everything from Sámi (Laplander) joiking (a form of chantlike singing from an indigenous people in Scandinavia) and Finnish-style musical saw to Afro-Uruguayan rhythms and Argentine vendors’ cries, the band’s influences are obvious: West Africa, Sámi culture, Bahia. Norwegian multi-instrumentalist and recording engineer Andreas Fliflet is behind Jienat. Mira conveys Fliflet’s wry love for his Arctic home, for its crazy weather, white nights, rusty Russian trawlers, and herds of errant reindeer. Fliflet muses, “While the recording technique is cutting edge, there is really nothing essential in the music that could not have been done 5,000 years ago—or 5,000 years from now.” Mira includes an audio-only Blu-Ray disc as well as a standard CD/high-def SACD. www.jienat.com. Piano-based folk singer SARA BANLEIGH’s album THE FOLK presents Sara’s riveting arrangements of traditional folk tunes, offering a rare and fascinating take on this age-old music. The album offers her interpretation of 5 traditional English, Scottish, and Irish folk songs, each of them several hundred years old. With intricate piano orchestration, compelling vocals, and a handful of other acoustic instruments, the EP offers a fresh and spellbinding journey through this ancient genre of music. www.sarabanleigh.com The maiden voyage of the “Cubist” band—an octet of artists playing music that grew in JERRY LEAKE’s studio CD— took place at Ryles Jazz Club to a sold out house. With a line-up of great international and local talent the music and energy was at its highest level. Now in his 30th year of a successful career in percussion, he is living the dream of realizing his music in the hands of some of the greatest musicians and improvisers of our time on JERRY LEAKE & CUBIST LIVE, his new world/rock fusion CD. Tasty Food and Drinks! Texas de Brazil Churrascaria Brazilian Barbecue Comes to Tampa Story and photos by Melissa Wolcott Martino
T
here’s a relatively new style of dining in the Tampa Bay area called “churrasco” that comes to us originally from the Pampas farming region of Brazil. It’s been around for centuries there, migrated to the USA shores some years back, and has worked it’s way to Tampa Bay in a much more upscale way than it’s humble beginnings. Churrasco is — more or less — a Brazilian barbeque, with meat slow roasted on a rotisserie, and a “churrascaria” is the steakhouse. A new family owned churrascaria opened recently in Tampa near the International Mall, called Texas de Brazil, which combines the style and flavor of Brazil with some Texas thrown in. The mix certainly

forms a winning combination. Texas de Brazil had it’s beginnings in a suburb of Dallas in 1998, and has grown to seventeen locations in the US, and one in Aruba — with more on the way. The dining experience at Texas de Brazil is lively, unique and flavorful. The building itself is stone, with dark tones of wood and brick, yet with loads of natural lighting due to the large windows along one whole side of the building. Tables are set with royal blue stemware on white tablecloths and plain white plates (best to show off the colorful food that is coming your way.) A gorgeous huge floral display is the centerpiece of the salad bar. The menu is prix fixe, and is all you can eat. You will be hard pressed to be able to even taste everything with the large variety of food offerings. After being seated you are invited to peruse the vast 50-item salad bar, which has some of the most interesting and tasty items on it that you will ever see on a salad bar. Back at your table, waiters come by with traditional Brazilian sides such as fried cinnamon-sugared bananas, garlic mashed potatoes, and the restaurant’s fabulous Brazilian cheese bread. Also on your table you will find a two-sided disc, with green (for “go”) and red (for “stop”). This is where the really good part comes in. Authentically attired Gauchos come by your table periodically with sizzling skewers of different flame-grilled meats, such as bacon-wrapped filet mignon, pork, ham, chicken, lamb, flank steak and Brazilian sausage to name a few. If you have your green disc side up, they will stop and offer to carve some meat right at your table. If you are not yet ready for more meat, just place the red side up. The salad bar choices are so amazing that even if you are not a meat-eater, you will be able to create a wonderful meal. Choose from such items as Potatoes au Gratin, Lobster Bisque, Hand-Rolled Sushi, Tangy Tabbouleh, Steamed

Texas de Brazil... Asparagus with Strawberry Sauce, Spring Mix, Marinated Portobello, Aged French Cheeses, and many, many more foodstuffs. If you are a meat-eater, you will find many fabulous cuts of meat at Texas de Brazil, with my favorite being their signature garlic-marinated Picanha (top sirloin), which I found to be out of this world. I must mention Texas de Brazil’s popular and delightful Brazilian cocktail, the “Caipirinha”, as well as their other specialty cocktails and extensive awardwinning wine selection, within which you will be able to find great pairings for you meal — either by you or one of the restaurant’s wine connoisseurs. Dessert choices are also impressive with their Brazilian Cheesecake and Carrot Cake at the top of my list. It is a natural tendency to want to taste everything, but it was impossible for me, which is a good thing, as I have so much to look forward to on my next visit. Texas de Brazil’s slogan is “Most Incredible Dining Experience”. And you know what? It is! As of this writing, the fixed price per person is $42.99, and $24.99 without meat. Dessert and drinks are extra. Children ages 6 and under are complimentary, and 7-12 are 1/2 price. Texas de Brazil is located at 4112 W. Boy Scout Blvd., Tampa. La Chamba Clay Cookware Eco-Friendly Cooking with Flare
T
oday’s cooks are re-discovering the simple pleasure of cooking with pots made of clay, which can be traced back at least 700 years to vases and pitchers found in pre-Columbian archaeological sites. It is still made in the traditional manner, mostly by women in the Magdalena River Basin in central Colombia. One of the most elegant types of clay pots are known as La Chamba. This black, all-natural pottery comes from the Colombian village of the same name and has been made by artisans there for generations. Each piece is crafted by hand with local clay rather than spun on a wheel, then burnished with smooth stones and fired in small wood-burning ovens. This complex process — along with the natural materials — give La Chamba dishes a beautifully distinctive and authentic look. The mica in the local clay allows the cookware to withstand the rigors of modern kitchens. It can be used in the oven, in the microwave and on the stovetop. There are no toxins used in the production of La Chamba dishes. The pieces are not glazed and there is no lead in the clay. The smooth finish of the pieces is the result of painstaking hand-burnishing with stones. Small imperfections in the finish and flecks of minerals in the clay are due to this handmade process and materials and can be considered a characteristic of the pottery. Mica in the surface gives the cookware the ability to heat evenly and not crack under temperature changes. Because the pieces are handmade, dimensions will vary from piece to piece. The body of each piece is made from coarse dark gray clay mined by hand. Finer clay is then applied thinly over the entire surface as a natural glaze. After drying, the piece is burnished with very smooth river stones. Lids are made to fit the individual pots they cover, but due to variations shrinkage during firing and drying, they are not expected to fit snugly on the piece. After baking in the sun, the cookware is placed inside earthenware urns and fired in large earth kilns. A coarse organic dust of dried herbs and grasses is thrown into the urns immediately after firing. This burns rapidly and reduces the ferric oxide in the glaze to ferrosoferric oxide, which is black. The process by which it turns black is also reversible if the cookware is exposed to intense heat in the presence of oxygen. Claypot cooking ensures an even heat distribution and retention while keeping your food moist throughout the cooking process. Before using clay Chamba cookware for the first time, the piece should be seasoned properly to seal. After it has been seasoned, Chamba cookware cleans easily. A quick soak and wipe down with a sponge or soft cloth is all you need to clean it. Toque Blanche imports this eco-friendly pottery from Colombia and offers over 40 different La Chamba styles of cookware, serveware and dinnerware in various sizes. Visit the Toque Blanche website to find out more about their items, order online, and find some tasty recipes to make in La Chamba cookware. www.MyToque.com

ate Middleton and Prince William married at Westminster Abbey in London on April 29, 2011. Royal watchers will be eyeing a wide range of collectibles. Which royal collectibles should you buy? I always advise people to collect objects that chronicle a historic event or relate to historic figures. It has been proven that in the market for art and antiques these historic and genuine objects will hold their value long term. Quality and authentic objects relating to a royal wedding, albeit the first of this century, certainly fit the bill. Reports indicate that the Lord Chamberlain, Earl Peel wrote in a staff memo recently that “We want (royal wedding) items that are permanent and significant.” For the Kate/William royal wedding, Queen Elizabeth II and her staff are proponents of such regal wedding collectibles as porcelain pillboxes, monogrammed tea towels, and commemorative cups that highlight the future king and his new bride. These are going to be, long term, the sought after collectibles so these are the objects to acquire now. The history of royal collectibles ranges from Queen Victoria’s diamond tiara, George V coronation china, Queen Elizabeth II monogrammed silver tea service, and of course, Prince Charles and Princess Diana royal wedding porcelain boxes. Buckingham Palace prefers classic royal wedding souvenirs over the mass produced William and Kate wedding dolls and nic nacs featuring images of the couple, many of which are coming out of China. Some of the more jovial royal collectibles include royal condoms, royal wedding sick (vomit) bags for all the other women who aren’t marrying the world’s #1 bachelor, and Waity Katie nail polish. Collectibles will emerge in the oddest of places. With the internet, a sales arena not available when Princess Diana wed in 1981, the world will have no trouble acquiring a wide variety of royal collectibles relating to Prince William and his bride. For the wedding of William and Kate, there are a few

collectibles that I think will travel under the radar. For instance, the University of St. Andrews in Fife, Scotland will see an increase in sales of items relating to the special place where the royal couple met in 2001 and fell in love. The couple graduated from the famous school in June 2005. Don’t be surprised to see lots of people donning St. Andrews t-shirts and bags or selling off carpet remnants from the couple’s famous campus apartment. I wish congratulations to the royal couple and happy hunting to all the rest of you royal collectors. ART LINES Frank Big Bear, Jr., a pastel by Viola Frey from her Fighting Men Series, and Jose Bedia’s richly symbolic mixed media on paper add some darker reflections on the human spirit. Some of the most captivating works use photography as a point of departure: Vietnamese artist Dinh Q. WORLDS APART: MYTH & HISTORY, GODS & MORTALS, HEROES & HYBRIDS thru Nov 20 Worlds Apart explores the many intersecting spheres of the world of classical antiquity, in particular those of myth and history, gods and mortals, heroes and hybrids. For rather than a single, discrete time and place, classical antiquity might be better described as a series of diverse and intersecting spheres— worlds apart from our own but also from one another. During the period covered in this exhibition, from about 2500 B.C. to A.D. 500, the vast areas of the Mediterranean Sea and surrounding lands were believed to have witnessed countless episodes, some verified by archaeology and historic accounts, others now considered wholly legendary. In this exhibition, objects have been grouped so as to accentuate both similarities and differences between myth and history, gods and mortals, heroes and hybrids. THE HILLSBOROUGH RIVER: FROM THE GREEN SWAMP TO THE BAY: Works by Karen Glaser - July 2Oct 16 In 2010, the City of Tampa selected Karen Glaser as its Photographer Laureate. Glaser’s project was to pay tribute to the diversity and complexity of the Hillsborough River. Since the 1990s, Glaser has chronicled the ecosystems and in particular its freshwater springs, rivers, and swamps of Florida. According to the artist, “the State of Florida has a truly interesting history and a remarkable cultural and natural heritage. It is home to some of the most unique natural areas in the world, and the tie that binds all in this
most diverse state is water.” For Glaser in the current works, “the paradoxical scenery of the Hillsborough River — as I traveled through time both culturally and naturally from the swamp through the city — was irresistibly compelling. I allowed the work to bend and flow, in whatever direction the experience took me all the while creating work that reflected the life and character of Tampa in a very special way.” SYNTAX: TEXT AND SYMBOLS FOR A NEW GENERATION Selections from the Hadley Martin Fisher Collection- July 9 Sept 25 The Museum is pleased to present Syntax, an exhibition that examines the current generation of artists’ interest in text, symbolism, and means of information transference. Drawn from the Hadley Martin Fisher collection in Miami, this project is the first opportunity to experience the depth of this fascinating new collection of contemporary art. n Syntax, the Museum has chosen an important theme that is central to the Hadley Martin Fisher (HMF) Collection: text-based work created by a new generation of conceptual artists. This exhibition highlights several key early works in the text-based genre within the HMF Collection (by artists such as John Baldessari, Mel Bochner and Joseph Kosuth) against a wide array of younger artists who revisit the importance of word, symbolism, communication and information transference. Together, these artists show that text-based art is a vital and vibrant presence. More than 30 artists are featured in this exhibition. For more information, visit www.tampamuseum.org

NEW QUILTS FROM AN OLD FAVORITE EXHIBIT July 8 - Aug 21
N
early everyone remembers sleeping under a quilt made by their mother or grandmother, and many of those quilts were made from time-honored traditional quilt designs. Today’s quiltmakers were challenged by the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, Kentucky to create original quilts based on the classic Sunflower block pattern. July 8 through August 21, the Dunedin Fine Art Center (DFAC) will present “New Quilts from an Old Favorite 2010: Sunflower,” an exhibit of the 18 finalist and winning quilts who responded to this challenge. These are not your grandmother’s quilts! Quilters from 11 U.S. states and Canada modified the Sunflower design in imaginative ways, providing a wonderful look at the skills, techniques and creativity of today’s quiltmakers. DFAC pairs this up with another quilt exhibit entitled Portals. IQ Quilters, a Tampa Bay quilt guild has put together this challenge for their members. The “I” in IQ stands for Innovative, and their individual interpretations of the portals are sure to be that. Embellishments, mixed materials and media are not only allowed, but encouraged. In addition to the 2 exhibitions, IQ Quilters have each donated small quilts to be auctioned in a silent auction format that will run throughout the exhibition. Proceeds will benefit educational programs at DFAC. The Dunedin Fine Art Center is located at 1143 Michigan Blvd., Dunedin, FL; 727-298-DFAC; www.dfac.org

MORSE MUSEUM of American Art New Expansion Recalls Grandeur of Louis Comfort Tiffany’s Personal Estate
he Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art, home to the most comprehensive collection of Louis Comfort Tiffany materials in the world, has a new 12,000-square-foot wing. The addition provides for the first time long-term public access to the recently restored Daffodil Terrace from Tiffany’s celebrated Long Island home, Laurelton Hall and approximately 250 art and architectural objects from or related to the long-lost estate. Highlights include prize-winning leaded-glass windows and iconic Tiffany lamps, as well as art glass and custom furnishings. The new Laurelton Hall galleries provides 6,000 square feet of additional public exhibition space. Laurelton Hall, every room and architectural detail designed and controlled by Tiffany, was destroyed by fire in 1957. The 11 new galleries at the Morse showcase surviving components of Laurelton Hall’s dining room, living room and reception hall-also known as the Fountain Courtas well as other rooms, creating a uniquely immersive experience. “Laurelton Hall was Tiffany’s masterpiece, and it housed a self-curated collection of Tiffany Studios’ production,” said Curator and Collection Manager Jennifer Perry Thalheimer. “The objects he put in his home and the way he arranged them reflected his perpetual quest for beauty.” Photographs of interiors from the much-published estate aided the museum’s efforts to suggest the true experience of Laurelton Hall. The Daffodil Terrace, installed in a new glass-enclosed gallery, serves as a focal point for the new wing. The 18-by-32foot outdoor room exemplifies Tiffany’s unique and dramatic style. Supported by eight 11-foot marble columns topped with bouquets of glass daffodils, the terrace’s coffered ceiling is composed of hundreds of stenciled wood elements and molded tiles in three bays. The central bay features a skylight covered by six large panels of iridescent-glass tiles in a pear-tree motif. The terrace was pieced together from more than 600 distinct parts and fragments. The conservation team was able to reconstruct the terrace using old black-and-white photographs, historical descriptions and computer technology. Highlights from the dining-room installation include: a 13.5foot-high, mosaic-decorated marble mantelpiece that is one of Tiffany’s most forward-looking designs; a 25-foot-long Oriental rug; a domed leaded-glass chandelier 6.5 feet in diameter; and a suite of six leaded-glass wisteria transoms. From the art gallery Tiffany built on the estate, the Morse is showing the pair of intricately carved Indian teak doors and halfmoon-shaped glass mosaic that graced the entryway. The centerpiece of the mosaic is a peacock-feather-motif window in leaded glass. The Morse Museum is located at 445 North Park Ave, Winter Park, FL 32789; 407-645-5311; www.morsemuseum.org

ersonality Hotels is not just another hotel chain, they are a privately-owned group of boutique hotels in San Francisco. President & CEO, Yvonne lembi-Detert, started the hotels in 1982 with the idea of creating a unique collection of hotels in great locations. That she has succeeded in doing just that is testament to her vision and style. All the hotels are located in the iconic Union Square section of San Francisco, and each hotel has its own personality. was established in 1982 and has recently undergone a $5million dollar renovation. It was built in 1913 for the Pan Pacific Expo. The challenge with the renovations was to preserve the historic elements of the original and integrate them into the current S.F. look. This was done with great success by using color, sleek furniture, exposed brick and luxurious bedding. Couple this with its location in the center of Union Square and you have an outstanding hotel to make your visit to S.F. all that you expect. Visit
for more details.
The boutique industry’s hottest lady right now is the . This is the perfect hotel for the traveling executive who needs a quiet spot to conduct business in S.F. but still be in the thick of things. The property has four interest lounges which are open 24 hours a day and offer complementary use of a computer. They are a great place to check email, meet with friend or just chill. Each one is different, and each one was created by a different designer to further the innovative expression of the hotel. The Diva has a unique suite, “The Suite ESC”. There you will find everything you need to conduct your business in your home away from home. From a printer, copy and fax machines and a desk filled with office supplies to a microwave, coffee maker and a fridge stocked with bottle water and snacks, you will be good to go. The additional amenities in the guest rooms make it the perfect place to hang your hat. For the executives traveling with their families, the Hotel Diva has a wonderful suite, called the “Little Diva Suite. This is a great idea, as Mom and Dad have their space and the kids have their own space too. It features and elegant master bedroom, a formal dining room, a large living room, as well as two fireplaces, a whirlpool bath and a grand view of Union Square. n 1836, after a 13-day siege at their Mission, and when all hope was gone, over 200 brave Texans and volunteers decided they’d rather die fighting to protect Texas than surrender to Santa Anna’s Mexican army of about 1,500. This, of course, was the tragic fate of the Alamo Mission in San Antonio. A month later, with the battle cry, “Remember the Alamo,” the Mexican army was defeated at the Battle of San Jacinto, winning independence for Texas. The Alamo’s pivotal battle in the Texas revolution spawned many books and movies glorifying the heroic efforts of Davy Crockett, James Bowie, William B. Travis and the struggle for freedom against all odds. One hundred and seventy five years later, the Alamo is still a revered shrine, and the #1 most visited place in Texas.
The Alamo may be crowded with visitors, but they seem to enter the shrine with a sense of reverence and respect for its extraordinary history. I felt it most deeply at night when few people were around. Built in 1724, the Alamo was miles from the next mission—and that’s about all the civilization there was at the time. Now, it is in the heart of town, as are a lot of San Antonio’s attractions, making them either walkable to each other, or easily accessed by a river taxi. And there certainly are a lot of very interesting and varied attractions to be seen in San Antonio.

exas’ second most visited place is also in San Antonio, and it is their magnificent River Walk. I had heard of River Walk, but had no idea what it was actually like. I certainly didn’t picture the beautiful 2-mile winding San Antonio River with a lot of vegetation and gorgeous old Montezuma Cypress trees growing along the edge with their canopies meeting over the middle of the river. Charming restaurants, musicians and fun bars make the river come alive at night. During the day visitors can peruse galleries, shops and restaurants for a wholly different experience. Walking is very enjoyable, but if you prefer, you can take a river taxi, provided by Rio San Antonio. With different ticket options you can get on and off at your leisure all day long, or you can opt for the narrated river tour which points out all the history and hot spots along the way. There is even a romantic evening dinner cruise available. We chose the 40-minute afternoon narrated tour, which was very informatively handled by our pilot Bob Pollard. We learned that River Walk was originally formed in 1924 as a flood control. It is only 3 1/2 feet deep, so if anyone imbibes too much at any of the lively bars and falls in, they most likely won’t drown! There are even some fish in the river, and we saw many ducks and birds along the way. We floated past some historical landmarks and structures such as: the 1860 Guenther House; the Hilton Palacio de Rio Hotel (which was built with pre-fab and furnished room modules for the 1968 San Antonio World’s Fair); La Villita (a 1700’s village which now houses shops and boutiques); and the 1883 Pearl Brewing Company which began life as a brewery and is now a 22-acre complex housing retail, restaurants, and the Culinary Institute of America (featuring Latin cuisine). Bob also pointed out Cafe Ole, which serves the largest margaritas on the river — a whopping 60 ounces! Every January as a regular maintenance, the walled part of the river is drained. During this “dry” spell, San Antonians make a party out of it with a 10-day Mud Festival. Rio San Antonio has a separate route that will take people to several different museums located along the river. The river will soon to be extended to become 13 miles long, and will provide visitors the ability to see even more of the city’s offerings.

iver Walk is below street level, and there are a lot of step-up (and elevator) points that take you up to the street to do more sightseeing and shopping. We tend to zero in on the historical places of interest, so we walked to the 1722 Spanish Governor’s Palace on Military Plaza. Originally the home of the Captain of the Presidio, the property expanded through the years with additions and had a variety of uses. It was a home until the late 1860s, when it when through a gamut of businesses — pawn shop, produce store, saloon, even a tire shop. In 1915, preservationists began the effort to purchase and restore it for future generations to get an interpretation of the occupant’s home life during the building’s 260 years. Nearby is the fascinating 129-year-old Buckhorn Saloon/Texas Ranger Museum with the history of the wild west in all it’s glory and infamy. The saloon is reputedly where Teddy Roosevelt recruited Rough Riders, and Pancho Villa planned the Mexican Revolution. Many of the original furnishings can still be found there, including the bar which was hand-crafted of marble and cherry wood. They serve lunch and locally brewed beers. The Buckhorn museum is a taxidermists dream, with over 520 species of wildlife from all over the world (plus some oddities). We found the Texas Rangers exhibit to be the most interesting, with artifacts including revolvers, automatic handguns, sawed off shotguns, photos and much more memorabilia. One room houses the Bonnie & Clyde exhibit with photos, artifacts, and their bullet-riddled ‘34 Ford. There is even an indoor walk-through western town with a saloon, jail, blacksmith shop and telegraph office. While Teddy was apparently recruiting Rough Riders at the Buckhorn, he was staying at the Menger Hotel, which is still in operation today. Built in 1859 (only 23 years after the fall of the Alamo), it is the oldest hotel in the state, and a stone’s throw from the Alamo. It has never closed, and has never been anything but a fine hotel. In addition to Teddy, the hotel guest book boasts such luminaries as Babe Ruth, Mae West, Robert E. Lee, Ulysses S. Grant, and Sarah Bernhardt, to name a few. Hmmm, the Menger also claims that Teddy recruited Rough Riders in their bar. Apparently he was either heavily into drinking or recruiting.

It is perfectly situated on River Walk, right in front of “Marriage Island” (named for the majestic Montezuma Cypress’ tree roots that form the tiny island’s heart shape). About one hundred marriages are performed there yearly. When you turn left out of the hotel’s back (River Walk) door, you enjoy the bustle of the restaurants and shops. When you turn right, you walk along the quiet side of the river — best of both worlds. Inside, an open atrium leads you up 12 stories in this 265-suite hotel with a modern Mediterranean theme. Guest suites are warmly decorated to reflect the San Antonio of today, and the bedding is extremely comfortable. Our sunny bedroom overlooked the river and the cypress trees. The living room area was well appointed with a sofa and several chairs. Thirty-seven inch flat LCD TVs were located in the living room and the bedroom. Wireless internet access and a very attractive desk set-up in the bedroom made getting some computer work done much more pleasant. A spa, outdoor heated pool, and fitness center are located on the top of the hotel, with panoramic views of the city. The Hotel Contessa also happens to have one of the best restaurants on River Walk with Las Ramblas, helmed by popular Executive Chef Brian West, who actually used to be a stand-up comic! I don’t know about his humor, be there’s nothing funny about his cooking. He specializes in tasty Spanish/Mediterranean cuisine and tapas. In Las Ramblas, you can dine inside or out right on the river for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The hotel’s open airy lobby also houses the Cork Bar, with specialty mojitos, martinis, and margaritas. For all you pet lovers who hate to leave your best friend at home, the Hotel Contessa is pet friendly! For an extra daily fee, you can bring Fido or Fifi along.

Lookin’ Good . . . Ladies... Hate Pumping Gas?
I
f you were driving in the 1960s, you may nostalgically remember when you could pull up to a gas station and someone would come out and fill your tank, check your oil, wash off your windshield, all while you sat prettily in the driver’s seat. That all went away in the 80s (except for those lucky gals who live in NJ), and now we are left to schlep it ourselves, all while getting nasty gas, grease, grime and germs on our hands — especially annoying when you’re all dressed up. Pump Gloves to the rescue! There is a new line of stylish and protective gloves to keep a woman’s hands safe from the “Gunk at the Gas Pump.” With less mess at the pump we can feel confident and clean on our way to work, school, or to pick up the kids. Keep them handily (no pun intended) in the glove compartment. Each pair comes with a vinyl carrying case for storing when not in use. They are made from nylon spandex for a formed fit, and are completely machine washable. One size fits all, and as an added perk, they can also be used exclusively as driving gloves which offer UV protection from the sun’s harsh rays. For more information, visit www.pumpgloves.com

Fifty thousand people either died or were wounded in only three days on a Pennsylvania field in the most famous battle of the Civil War. It is almost impossible to believe that so much heartache happened in this bucolic area filled with gentle hills and scenic farms. If only the fields and trees could talk. As you stroll the pathways and view the many memorials, it feels like you are in a church — you want to whisper and shush the children. This was the only major battle on Union soil. Even though many other battles left desolation across the country, so many died here that President Lincoln came to Gettysburg to remember the slain. The speech that he gave was only two minutes long, but is one of the most remembered speeches in history. Anyone with an interest in history should plan to be here for the anniversary. Gettysburg is located only 2 hours from Washington and Philadelphia and about 4 hours from N.Y. There will be so much to experience in the area that it’s safe to say that at least a week would be

The first thing I would do is to visit the Museum and Visitor Center at Gettysburg National Military Park, where you get to see the world’s largest Civil War collection. The Cyclorama has recently been restored and enhanced. The painting will surround you with the fury of the war. The “voices theater” will let you hear the words of those who were at Gettysburg. You get a unique perceptive on one of the most important events in our Nation’s history. Gettysburg is a great area for a family visit, as there is something here for everyone and everything is real. Lincoln? Go over to the David Wills House and have a picture taken with him. Have you ever seen a real ghost? Be very careful, this town is loaded with ghosts. At the Farnsworth House, go down into the cellar (if you dare) and you will be in the spirit world. Are you still feeling brave? Then go up to the attic. You never know you’ll meet up there. There may be long dead (or are they dead?) Confederate sharpshooters roaming about. Next plan to visit the Eisenhower National Historic site, the home of President and Mrs. Eisenhower. Enough history for now? How about a game or two of golf? Some shopping in one of the historic buildings or at an Outlet Mall? ampa’s own Debra Weisser invented Hem-Eze in 2008, working out of her home. She had the product patented and trademarked. Debra invented Hem-Eze out of necessity; she needed a convenient, quick, and easy way to put a temporary hem on a pair of pants. In this fast-paced world, sometimes sewing just doesn’t fit in. You don’t have to sew to use this product. Flexibility and versatility, that’s what today’s fashionistas want. Hem-Eze uses a specially formulated double sided strip, and is safe enough to use on delicate fabrics like cotton and silks, while strong enough to withstand heavier and coarser fabrics like denim and corduroy. It places an actual crease in the fabric that yields a professional hemmed look. Hem-Eze has been featured on the Today Show with Bobbie Thomas and on the NBC 15 Morning Show “Hot Trends”. It was also selected by RealSimple.Com magazine as one of their six Problem Solvers. Real Simple.com says, “End the battle between keeping your pants long to wear heels and short to wear with flats. Place Hem-Eze double-sided tape on the inside of each pant bottom. Then, when the occasion calls for stilettos, remove the tape and release the hem.” Their slogan is “Wear High Heels this morning and Sandals tonight… with HemEze.” Visit www.Hem-Eze.com for more information.

ROCKERS AND ROLLERS: FULL-THROTTLE MEMOIR
A
SEASONED: A CHEF’S WITH HER CAPTAIN
by Brian Johnson
by Victoria Allman
B
V
y night, Brian Johnson sings in the biggest rock ’n’ roll band on the planet. But by day, AC/ DC’s frontman drives balls to the wall. Cars and rock ’n’ roll — they were made for each other. When he was a young boy growing up in a working-class English town, Brian developed what would become a lifelong passion for cars, trolling junkyards and even pretending to drive the family car. From there, he steamed up the windows of his old Mini Cooper as a teenager, spent untold time in hygienically challenged tour buses with helpful signs such as No Shitting Allowed. Shagging Expected, was chauffeured in leather-trimmed limos, and raced cars to a checkered flag. Featuring guest stars Cliff Williams, Malcolm and Angus Young, and many, many others, even Arnold Schwarzenegger, Rockers and Rollers is a tribute to Brian’s obsession with four wheels. By turns surprising, poignant, funny, and maybe a little bit bawdy, these are the stories of a man who drives as hard as he rocks. In 2003 Brian Johnson was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, along with the other members of the band. He lives in Sarasota, FL. www.youritlist.com

eturning to Berlin after being educated but disenchanted with America, Christian Wolfe finds that he and Germany are on a collision course with destiny. Because of his skills in English and knowledge of America, he is coerced by the German military to board a U-boat bound for the Gulf of Mexico to locate and extract a high level German officer imprisoned in a POW camp near the coast. Christian’s mission runs smoothly until he witnesses an unusual and violent act by Maggie Neal, a young woman living in Grayton Beach, against a man who had taken advantage of her and her servant. Suddenly their lives collide, resulting in a death and involvement with the local police. He and Maggie discover they need each other to survive. Sparks fly and they have a brief and passionate affair, leaving each with deep but unsettled feelings for the other. Upon returning to France, Christian relies on his instincts when an opportunity arises to reconsider his future. Arriving in Atlanta, he is determined to find Maggie, but with their relationship founded on death and deception, could they possibly build a future together? James Harvey spent his childhood years in south Alabama and the Panhandle of Florida where he became fascinated with stories of how German U-boats roamed the Gulf of Mexico during WWII. James now lives in the panhandle of Florida with his wife Marie. When he isn’t writing, he can be found fly fishing the local trout streams and Florida Keys.
FLORIDA IN THE SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR
F
lorida began as a Spanish colony, with governing headquarters in Havana, Cuba. It is fitting, then, that the state played such a large role in the Spanish-American War. As a base of training and combat operations, Florida’s involvement was crucial to the war effort. Join trusted historians Joe Knetsch and Nick Wynne as they log a fascinating chapter in Florida’s history — a time when Roosevelt’s Rough Riders prepared for battle at Tampa bases, when battleships departed from south Florida ports to avenge the sunken USS Maine and when a nation looked to the Sunshine State to help unite America around a common cause, even as the nation still struggled to come to terms with the Civil War and Reconstruction. Dr. Nick Wynne retired in 2008 from his post as executive director of the Florida Historical Society. He taught college history at several universities, including the University of South Florida, and has published more than twenty books. He currently resides in Rockledge, Florida. Dr. Joe Knetsch is a well-respected Florida historian. His Fear and Anxiety on the Florida Frontier: The Second Seminole War, was published by the Seminole Wars Foundation. He is a member of the Florida Historical Society, and has written extensively on Florida history.

Bruning www.zenith press.com Bombs Away! covers all aerial bombardment of a strategic nature which took place between 1939 and 1945. HITLER’S MASTER OF THE DARK ARTS: Himmler’s Black Knights and the Occult Origins of the SS by Bill Yenne www.zenithpress.com Hitler’s Nazi Party, at its evil roots, embraced a bizarre interpretation of ancient European paganism, blending it with fragments of other traditions from sources as diverse as tenth-century Saxon warlords, nineteenthcentury spiritualism, and earlytwentieth-century fringe archeology. Even the swastika, the hated symbol of Nazism, had its roots in ancient symbolism, its first recorded appearance carved into a mammoth tusk twelve thousand years before Hitler came to power. At the heart of the evil was Hitler’s “witch doctor,” Heinrich Himmler, and his stranger-than-fiction cult, the deadly SS. Hitler’s Master of the Dark Arts is the first history of the SS and its leader to focus on the mystical cult aspects of the organization. It follows Himmler’s transformation of the SS from a few hundred members in 1929 to over fifty thousand black-uniformed Aryans by the mid-1930s. Concurrent with its expansion and its eventual independence from the brown shirts of the SA, Himmler infused the Black Knights with a mishmash of occult beliefs and lunatic-fringe theories that were used to justify the Final Solution.

DIAPER BUDS New Vacuum Packed Disposable Diapers Moms, your diaper bag just got a rommier with the introduction of DiaperBuds. Three sisters—all working moms— realized the need for less bulky and more sanitary diapers when traveling or just out shopping. They created a uniquely folded diaper that was then shrinkwrapped to reduce the size — 70% smaller. This packaging also keeps the diapers sanitary while floating around in a diaper bag, where loose ones would have attracted dirt, dust and bacteria. When opened, they “bloom” into a full-size diaper.
