DOLPHIN TALE RED CARPET EVENT - Wed, Sept 21 Dolphin Tale is the extraordinary story of Winter the Dolphin, a resident animal of Clearwater Marine Aquarium. In December of 2005, Winter was rescued by CMA off the east coast of Florida. She was just a baby calf, entangled in a crab trap. The rope of the trap had cut off all circulation to Winter’s tail. Eventually, Winter’s tail fell off, usually an injury that dolphins are unable to overcome. Through determination and incredible will power, Winter was able to recover. Hanger Prosthetics, a company that makes prosthetic limbs for human amputees, heard about Winter and sought to make a prosthetic tail for her. Using her prosthesis, Winter has learned to swim like all other dolphins. Her story has inspired thousands of people all over the world. In September of 2010, Alcon Films and Warner Bros. began production on Dolphin Tale, a major motion picture inspired by Winter’s story. The film stars Harry Connick, Jr., Ashley Judd, Morgan Freeman and Kris Kristofferson. The film will be released world-wide September 23. Clearwater Marine Aquarium will celebrate the area’s first major motion picture and Winter’s silver screen debut with a EXCLUSIVE special screening of Dolphin Tale on September 21 at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater. www.seewinter.com/winter/dolphin-tale/dolphin-taleevent

BREAKING UP IS HARD TO DO: THE NEIL SEDAKA MUSICAL - Now thru Aug 21

Neil Sedaka’s back again in Breaking Up Is Hard To Do, the entertaining new musical which features his most famous hits from the 1950s, 60s, and 70s. This enduring story presents over nineteen of Neil Sedaka’s greatest hits, spun together in a lighthearted tale of mistaken identity, friendship and love. Like its fellow “jukebox musicals” Mamma Mia and All Shook Up (which built plots around the music of ABBA and Elvis), Breaking Up Is Hard To Do concocts a hit-based tale, this one taking place on an early 1960s Labor Day Weekend at “Esther’s Paradise Resort” in New York’s famed Catskill Mountains. This all-new musical hit includes some of Sedaka’s best standards like Love Will Keep us Together, Laughter in the Rain, Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen, Calendar Girl, Where the Boys Are, and Breaking Up is Hard to Do.

STEEL MAGNOLIAS - Aug 26 thru Sept 25

By Robert Harling.Truvy’s Beauty Salon is the unofficial hub of Chinquapin, Louisiana. It is here that these softhearted “magnolias” with the steely disposition come to chitchat with, counsel, criticize and comfort one another. Helped by her eager new assistant, Annelle (who is not sure whether or not she is still married), the outspoken, wise-cracking Truvy dispenses shampoos and free advice to the town’s rich curmudgeon, Ouiser, (“I’m not crazy, I’ve just been in a bad mood for forty years”); an eccentric millionaire, Miss Clairee, who has a raging sweet tooth; and the local social leader, M’Lynn, whose daughter, Shelby, is about to marry a “good ole boy.” Steel Magnolias is alternately hilarious and touching. The play focuses on the camaraderie of these six Southern women who talk, gossip, needle and harangue each other through the best of times — and comfort and repair one another through the worst. OPENING SEASON 2011-2012 IN THE CHANNEL DISTRICT

A sensation in New York, composer David Friedman brings his Off-Broadway hit to Tampa with a local Tampa cast. A cabaret evening of inspirational songs will open Stageworks new theatre in The Channel District.

By Rajiv Joseph, this hot, new play follows the bizarre wounds that chart your life. Dark but humorous, it balances youthful exhuberance with raw tenderness. Doug is a daredevil jock with a bit of a death wish; Kayleen’s injuries are more internal and crushing to the soul. Broken hearts and broken bones draw them close but it is the undercurrent of yearning that leads them to find the healing power of love. Quirky and poignant.

By David Hare, a contemporary riff on the oncebanned La Ronde, an exploration of lust, class and the power of sex. A sensation in London and New York, this scandalous play is full of erotic energy as one actor and one actress play all ten partners in a continuous daisy chain of sexual liaisons. Funny. Razor sharp.

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 1983, this high stakes drama is a beautiful yet devastating depiction of a mother and daughter in crisis. With humor amid vibrant emotional honesty, it is a penetrating examination of helplessness Eloquent and touching. A stunning theatre piece.

A story that speaks to the very heart of American integrity. A tender portrait of a southern town, brimming with powerful lessons of tolerance, justice and quiet heroism and a message of fighting for what is right. Book by Harper Lee. 1961 Pulitzer Prize for fiction.

By Neil Simon. Biloxi is the second play in the “Eugene” Trilogy! Social, racial and ethnic issues are tackled with Simon’s superb comic timing as Eugene is drafted to serve in WWII and comes of age in ARMY BOOT CAMP! Rich in both humor and ethical confrontation. Tony AWARD for best play: 1985.

By Howard Crabtree. In this side-splitting musical extravaganza, new heights of hilarity are reached in outrageous skits and over-the-top costumes. Smart, inventive lyrics match wits with sequins and feathers as an oldfashioned revue collides with a campy, gay send-up of Broadway musicals. 1996 Drama Desk Award for Best OffBroadway Musical. Legendary guitar virtuoso and world music pioneer AL DI MEOLA’s latest outing PURSUIT OF RADICAL RHAPSODY was years in the making. It showcases his mastery of complex rhythmic syncopation combined with provocative lyrical melodies and sophisticated harmony. By turns tender and spirited, the album features soulful Di Meola compositions. Working with World Sinfonia, he has created a collection of 15 entrancing tracks that highlight his unparalleled technique on both acoustic and electric guitar. www.aldimeola.com

Welsh alt-pop duo PAPER AEROPLANES’ debut effort, THE DAY WE RAN INTO THE SEA is a mixture of folk and acoustic elements laced the electric guitars and Celtic undertones (contributed to by producer Jon Reynolds, who’s worked with the likes of Sinead O’Connor). The album also features sonic contributions from Head (PJ Harvey), John Reynolds (Sinead O’Conner, Belinda Carlisle) and Matt Prime (Will Young, Kelly Clarkson, Natalie Imbruglia). Each song has a commercial pop sensibility topped off with poignant lyrics and vocalist Sarah Howells’ haunting ‘one of a kind’ voice. The quartet that LESLIE PINTCHIK has assembled for her third CD WE’RE HERE TO LISTEN (with Scott Hardy on bass, Mark Dodge on drums and percussionist Satoshi Takeishi) is one that really knows how to listen, both to each other and to the evolving narrative of the music they create together as an ensemble. The longevity of this quartet (12 years) and the deep musicianship of all four of its members allow the full range of Pintchik’s rather unusual voice as composer, arranger and pianist to emerge. The playlist includes a mix of seven strong originals, and three very intriguing arrangements of well known tunes. www.lesliepintchik.com With his new album, EZRA WEISS reaffirms his status as one of the premier young jazz pianists and composers of today. THE SHIRLEY HORN SUITE finds him heightening his sense of elevation and refinement in a trio format with up-and-coming string bassist Corcoran Holt and veteran drummer Steve Williams. The special guest vocalist is Shirley Nanette, a Pacific Northwest jazz legend. Weiss gives us his affectionate appreciation of Shirley Horn, an unforgettable pianist and singer whose way with beautiful melodies, harmonic coloration, and rhythm alterations made her the toast of the jazz world in the 1980s and ’90. Although the CD resembles a live recording, there was no audience except his recording engineer Brian Masterson. During the tenhour session, Johnston played each tune once or twice, and later there was no overdubbing, editing or combining of takes. As evening came on, he had the lights turned off for the last half of the session. WORLD JIENAT’s release, MIRA, was recorded on a Finnish island in an old parish hall, putting age-old sounds in a cutting-edge frame. Drawing on everything from Sámi (Laplander) joiking (a form of chantlike singing from an indigenous people in Scandinavia) and Finnish-style musical saw to Afro-Uruguayan rhythms and Argentine vendors’ cries, the band’s influences are obvious: West Africa, Sámi culture, Bahia. Norwegian multi-instrumentalist and recording engineer Andreas Fliflet is behind Jienat. Mira conveys Fliflet’s wry love for his Arctic home, for its crazy weather, white nights, rusty Russian trawlers, and herds of errant reindeer. Fliflet muses, “While the recording technique is cutting edge, there is really nothing essential in the music that could not have been done 5,000 years ago—or 5,000 years from now.” Mira includes an audio-only Blu-Ray disc as well as a standard CD/high-def SACD. www.jienat.com. Piano-based folk singer SARA BANLEIGH’s album THE FOLK presents Sara’s riveting arrangements of traditional folk tunes, offering a rare and fascinating take on this age-old music. The album offers her interpretation of 5 traditional English, Scottish, and Irish folk songs, each of them several hundred years old. With intricate piano orchestration, compelling vocals, and a handful of other acoustic instruments, the EP offers a fresh and spellbinding journey through this ancient genre of music. www.sarabanleigh.com The maiden voyage of the “Cubist” band—an octet of artists playing music that grew in JERRY LEAKE’s studio CD— took place at Ryles Jazz Club to a sold out house. Tasty Food and Drinks! Texas de Brazil Churrascaria Brazilian Barbecue Comes to Tampa Story and photos by Melissa Wolcott Martino

T

here’s a relatively new style of dining in the Tampa Bay area called “churrasco” that comes to us originally from the Pampas farming region of Brazil. It’s been around for centuries there, migrated to the USA shores some years back, and has worked it’s way to Tampa Bay in a much more upscale way than it’s humble beginnings. Churrasco is — more or less — a Brazilian barbeque, with meat slow roasted on a rotisserie, and a “churrascaria” is the steakhouse. A new family owned churrascaria opened recently in Tampa near the International Mall, called Texas de Brazil, which combines the style and flavor of Brazil with some Texas thrown in. The mix certainly

forms a winning combination. Texas de Brazil had it’s beginnings in a suburb of Dallas in 1998, and has grown to seventeen locations in the US, and one in Aruba — with more on the way. The dining experience at Texas de Brazil is lively, unique and flavorful. The building itself is stone, with dark tones of wood and brick, yet with loads of natural lighting due to the large windows along one whole side of the building. Tables are set with royal blue stemware on white tablecloths and plain white plates (best to show off the colorful food that is coming your way.) A gorgeous huge floral display is the centerpiece of the salad bar. The menu is prix fixe, and is all you can eat. You will be hard pressed to be able to even taste everything with the large variety of food offerings. After being seated you are invited to peruse the vast 50-item salad bar, which has some of the most interesting and tasty items on it that you will ever see on a salad bar. Back at your table, waiters come by with traditional Brazilian sides such as fried cinnamon-sugared bananas, garlic mashed potatoes, and the restaurant’s fabulous Brazilian cheese bread. Also on your table you will find a two-sided disc, with green (for “go”) and red (for “stop”). This is where the really good part comes in. Authentically attired Gauchos come by your table periodically with sizzling skewers of different flame-grilled meats, such as bacon-wrapped filet mignon, pork, ham, chicken, lamb, flank steak and Brazilian sausage to name a few. If you have your green disc side up, they will stop and offer to carve some meat right at your table. If you are not yet ready for more meat, just place the red side up. The salad bar choices are so amazing that even if you are not a meat-eater, you will be able to create a wonderful meal. Choose from such items as Potatoes au Gratin, Lobster Bisque, Hand-Rolled Sushi, Tangy Tabbouleh, Steamed

Texas de Brazil... Asparagus with Strawberry Sauce, Spring Mix, Marinated Portobello, Aged French Cheeses, and many, many more foodstuffs. If you are a meat-eater, you will find many fabulous cuts of meat at Texas de Brazil, with my favorite being their signature garlic-marinated Picanha (top sirloin), which I found to be out of this world. I must mention Texas de Brazil’s popular and delightful Brazilian cocktail, the “Caipirinha”, as well as their other specialty cocktails and extensive awardwinning wine selection, within which you will be able to find great pairings for you meal — either by you or one of the restaurant’s wine connoisseurs. Dessert choices are also impressive with their Brazilian Cheesecake and Carrot Cake at the top of my list. It is a natural tendency to want to taste everything, but it was impossible for me, which is a good thing, as I have so much to look forward to on my next visit. Texas de Brazil’s slogan is “Most Incredible Dining Experience”. And you know what? It is! As of this writing, the fixed price per person is $42.99, and $24.99 without meat. Dessert and drinks are extra. Children ages 6 and under are complimentary, and 7-12 are 1/2 price. Texas de Brazil is located at 4112 W. Boy Scout Blvd., Tampa. La Chamba Clay Cookware Eco-Friendly Cooking with Flare

T

oday’s cooks are re-discovering the simple pleasure of cooking with pots made of clay, which can be traced back at least 700 years to vases and pitchers found in pre-Columbian archaeological sites. It is still made in the traditional manner, mostly by women in the Magdalena River Basin in central Colombia. One of the most elegant types of clay pots are known as La Chamba. This black, all-natural pottery comes from the Colombian village of the same name and has been made by artisans there for generations. Each piece is crafted by hand with local clay rather than spun on a wheel, then burnished with smooth stones and fired in small wood-burning ovens. This complex process — along with the natural materials — give La Chamba dishes a beautifully distinctive and authentic look. The mica in the local clay allows the cookware to withstand the rigors of modern kitchens. It can be used in the oven, in the microwave and on the stovetop. There are no toxins used in the production of La Chamba dishes. The pieces are not glazed and there is no lead in the clay. The smooth finish of the pieces is the result of painstaking hand-burnishing with stones. Small imperfections in the finish and flecks of minerals in the clay are due to this handmade process and materials and can be considered a characteristic of the pottery. Mica in the surface gives the cookware the ability to heat evenly and not crack under temperature changes. Because the pieces are handmade, dimensions will vary from piece to piece. The body of each piece is made from coarse dark gray clay mined by hand. Finer clay is then applied thinly over the entire surface as a natural glaze. After drying, the piece is burnished with very smooth river stones. Lids are made to fit the individual pots they cover, but due to variations shrinkage during firing and drying, they are not expected to fit snugly on the piece. After baking in the sun, the cookware is placed inside earthenware urns and fired in large earth kilns. A coarse organic dust of dried herbs and grasses is thrown into the urns immediately after firing. This burns rapidly and reduces the ferric oxide in the glaze to ferrosoferric oxide, which is black. The process by which it turns black is also reversible if the cookware is exposed to intense heat in the presence of oxygen. Claypot cooking ensures an even heat distribution and retention while keeping your food moist throughout the cooking process. Before using clay Chamba cookware for the first time, the piece should be seasoned properly to seal. After it has been seasoned, Chamba cookware cleans easily. A quick soak and wipe down with a sponge or soft cloth is all you need to clean it. Toque Blanche imports this eco-friendly pottery from Colombia and offers over 40 different La Chamba styles of cookware, serveware and dinnerware in various sizes. Visit the Toque Blanche website to find out more about their items, order online, and find some tasty recipes to make in La Chamba cookware. www.MyToque.com

Who would want my old object? That’s where human nature gets in the way. It’s this attitude that loses you money, big money. People call my office or email me and ask this question over and over again: “I have a (insert any antique object here), does it have any value?” My answer is always that everything has value. And even your object has value! have to laugh when a so called “expert” (also known as some people who write a story or a blog about the antiques market after interviewing three people who hosted yard sales) writes a column or posts an online blog and lists which items are “hot” right now. They rarely get it right. That is yet another misguided attempt to compile that single, comprehensive list of what is worth keeping. In short, those lists are bogus.

First of all, most people know what is valuable to them. But, most people don’t know what’s valuable to other people. For instance, if someone is trying to get rid of an old pool table that has become obsolete, they have a hard time realizing that someone else would want that pool table. Once you have no use for an object, you figure no one else has use for it either. That’s why people ask me,

The real questions are how much value does it have? How does that dollar value relate to you? For instance, some of the richest people in the world like Warren Buffett, Bill Gates, and Oprah Winfrey probably wouldn’t think that a couple of aging Barbie dolls worth $150 each are valuable. If you are not Mr. Gates and are, instead, an unemployed lion tamer who found these dolls in their original boxes in your neighbor’s trash, it would probably be more valuable to you. Do you get it? Value is relative. Some people will bother going after $150 by selling those valuable Barbies and other people won’t.

Experts know that the collectibles market is not about trends, it’s about quality objects and historical or cultural interest. If you are banking on making money on a trend, you are dealing in the collectibles market in the same way a gambler would play the roulette table. Trends are a crap shoot, a lottery ticket, a slim chance at a big win. Trends are those flash in the pan items that never hold their value very long like the Pet Rock, or Beanie Babies. Those items had some interest at one time, made some money for the manufacturers and the marketers, but they say nothing about culture, history, or what’s of interest to contemporary society. The objects that relate to history are those with real value and have staying power in the marketplace. When it comes to collecting, you want to acquire objects that say something about our society at large, the historical period in which it was made, or a technological innovation. Assessing valuables and smart collecting is not about fads, it’s about knowing the facts.

Mother is cleaning out grandma’s home in order to sell it. Grandma has moved to a healthcare facility and needs as much money as possible from liquidating her belongings. Mother asks her only son whether she should trash grandma’s costume jewelry or try to sell it online. Her son does some internet research but o you have the chore of cleaning out grandma’s house? Are you downsizing and cannot fit everything into your new place? Hosting a yard sale and separating sale items from trash? My popular quiz game, “Dumpster or No Dumpster” will help you determine what to do with your art, antiques, and collectibles. I evaluate approximately 20,000 objects every year at public events and in private homes like yours. My job is to research the market and provide accurate appraisals based on actual sales records where somebody paid cash, wrote a check, or swiped a credit card for an item. I’ll help you make informed decisions about buying, selling, insuring, donating, handing down or disposing of family heirlooms. Test your knowledge with the “Dumpster or No Dumpster” quiz. 1. You want to know if it is worth the time and energy to move your grandma’s old Victorian settee and matching parlor chair out of the attic and onto the front lawn in order to sell it at your yard sale. Do you move it or continue to store it? A. Move it and sell it at the yard sale B. Keep storing it in the attic C. None of the above Answer: C. A yard sale is a very poor market to sell antique and vintage furniture. Typically, you will get less than 10% of the object’s actual value by selling it this way. And, if you store it, the attic is one of the worst places to store antiques as temperature and humidity changes significantly and can impact the condition and value of the antiques. 2. You are downsizing and have to decide whether to keep grandma’s collection of 10 hand-painted and glazed earthenware Hummel figurines or a original lithographic print by American realist artist, Moses Soyer from the early decades of the 1900s. Which makes it to the dumpster? A. The Hummel figurines B. The Soyer lithograph Answer: A. Based solely on monetary value, keep the original work of art by Moses Soyer. Long term, the artwork will retain value and increase in value at a greater rate over time than the collectible figurines. But, the Hummel collection is not worth peanuts, mind you. A typical 6 inch tall Hummel sculpture of a single figure in Sister Hummel’s characteristic style resells for $200 to $400. For a collection of ten Hummels, they would be val-

WORLDS APART: MYTH & HISTORY, GODS & MORTALS, HEROES & HYBRIDS thru Nov 20 Worlds Apart explores the many intersecting spheres of the world of classical antiquity, in particular those of myth and history, gods and mortals, heroes and hybrids. For rather than a single, discrete time and place, classical antiquity might be better described as a series of diverse and intersecting spheres— worlds apart from our own but also from one another. During the period covered in this exhibition, from about 2500 B.C. to A.D. 500, the vast areas of the Mediterranean Sea and surrounding lands were believed to have witnessed countless episodes, some verified by archaeology and historic accounts, others now considered wholly legendary. In this exhibition, objects have been grouped so as to accentuate both similarities and differences between myth and history, gods and mortals, heroes and hybrids. THE HILLSBOROUGH RIVER: FROM THE GREEN SWAMP TO THE BAY: Works by Karen Glaser - thru Oct 16 In 2010, the City of Tampa selected Karen Glaser as its Photographer Laureate. Glaser’s project was to pay tribute to the diversity and complexity of the Hillsborough River. Since the 1990s, Glaser has chronicled the ecosystems and in particular its freshwater springs, rivers, and swamps of Florida. According to the artist, “the State of Florida has a truly interesting history and a remarkable cultural and natural heritage. It is home to some of the most unique natural areas in the world, and the tie that binds all in this

most diverse state is water.” For Glaser in the current works, “the paradoxical scenery of the Hillsborough River — as I traveled through time both culturally and naturally from the swamp through the city — was irresistibly compelling. I allowed the work to bend and flow, in whatever direction the experience took me all the while creating work that reflected the life and character of Tampa in a very special way.” SYNTAX: TEXT AND SYMBOLS FOR A NEW GENERATION Selections from the Hadley Martin Fisher Collection - thru Sept 25 The Museum is pleased to present Syntax, an exhibition that examines the current generation of artists’ interest in text, symbolism, and means of information transference. Drawn from the Hadley Martin Fisher collection in Miami, this project is the first opportunity to experience the depth of this fascinating new collection of contemporary art. n Syntax, the Museum has chosen an important theme that is central to the Hadley Martin Fisher (HMF) Collection: text-based work created by a new generation of conceptual artists. This exhibition highlights several key early works in the text-based genre within the HMF Collection (by artists such as John Baldessari, Mel Bochner and Joseph Kosuth) against a wide array of younger artists who revisit the importance of word, symbolism, communication and information transference. Together, these artists show that text-based art is a vital and vibrant presence. More than 30 artists are featured in this exhibition. For more information, visit www.tampamuseum.org

MORSE MUSEUM of American Art New Expansion Recalls Grandeur of Louis Comfort Tiffany’s Personal Estate

T

he Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art, home to the most comprehensive collection of Louis Comfort Tiffany materials in the world, has a new 12,000-square-foot wing. The addition provides for the first time long-term public access to the recently restored Daffodil Terrace from Tiffany’s celebrated Long Island home, Laurelton Hall and approximately 250 art and architectural objects from or related to the long-lost estate. Highlights include prize-winning leaded-glass windows and iconic Tiffany lamps, as well as art glass and custom furnishings. The new Laurelton Hall galleries provides 6,000 square feet of additional public exhibition space. Laurelton Hall, every room and architectural detail designed and controlled by Tiffany, was destroyed by fire in 1957. The 11 new galleries at the Morse showcase surviving components of Laurelton Hall’s dining room, living room and reception hall-also known as the Fountain Courtas well as other rooms, creating a uniquely immersive experience. “Laurelton Hall was Tiffany’s masterpiece, and it housed a self-curated collection of Tiffany Studios’ production,” said Curator and Collection Manager Jennifer Perry Thalheimer. “The objects he put in his home and the way he arranged them reflected his perpetual quest for beauty.” Photographs of interiors from the much-published estate aided the museum’s efforts to suggest the true experience of Laurelton Hall. The Daffodil Terrace, installed in a new glass-enclosed gallery, serves as a focal point for the new wing. The 18-by-32foot outdoor room exemplifies Tiffany’s unique and dramatic style. Supported by eight 11-foot marble columns topped with bouquets of glass daffodils, the terrace’s coffered ceiling is composed of hundreds of stenciled wood elements and molded tiles in three bays. The central bay features a skylight covered by six large panels of iridescent-glass tiles in a pear-tree motif. The terrace was pieced together from more than 600 distinct parts and fragments. The conservation team was able to reconstruct the terrace using old black-and-white photographs, historical descriptions and computer technology. Highlights from the dining-room installation include: a 13.5foot-high, mosaic-decorated marble mantelpiece that is one of Tiffany’s most forward-looking designs; a 25-foot-long Oriental rug; a domed leaded-glass chandelier 6.5 feet in diameter; and a suite of six leaded-glass wisteria transoms. From the art gallery Tiffany built on the estate, the Morse is showing the pair of intricately carved Indian teak doors and halfmoon-shaped glass mosaic that graced the entryway. The centerpiece of the mosaic is a peacock-feather-motif window in leaded glass. The Morse Museum is located at 445 North Park Ave, Winter Park, FL 32789; 407-645-5311; www.morsemuseum.org

O u t O f A P a in f u l Past C o m e s A B r ig h t F u t u re Story and Photos by Melissa Wolcott and Al Martino

O

siyo! (Pronounced oh-see-oh) means “hello in Cherokee, and it is an expression you hear a lot in Oklahoma, where upwards of 300,000 members of the Cherokee Nation reside. Oklahoma has the largest population of Native Americans in the United States (which has over 500 different Indian nations spread throughout the country). But it is the Cherokees of Tulsa we visited and learned about.

www.AccentOnTampaBay.com

O

ur first encounter with a member of the Cherokee Nation was with our blonde-haired, blue-eyed taxi driver from the Tulsa airport to the Hard Rock Tulsa Hotel/Casino. Not exactly stereotypical of what you perceive a Native American to look like, but Cherokee he was. Anyone who’s ancestor signed the “Dawes Rolls” back in 18981914 is entitled to claim Cherokee heritage rights, or the rights of any of the 5 “civilized” tribes — Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Creek (a.k.a Muscogee) or Seminole. The Tribes were termed “civilized” by white settlers because they lived European style as farmers, built brick buildings, dressed more European style and had organized forms of government.

T

he Dawes Rolls takes us back in time to one of our country’s greatest shames — The heinous “Trail of Tears” in the 1830s-40s. European settlers saw Native Americans as a threat to their plans for expansion, and as a result, the Five Tribes were removed from their homelands east of the Mississippi, at first voluntarily, and then by force. The forced removal is referred to as The Trail of Tears. Andrew Jackson is not looked on fondly in history by the Cherokees, as it was he who spearheaded their removal — and this after they, with their great Cherokee chief, Sequoyah, heroically fought along side him in the War of 1812, winning the Battle of Horseshoe Bend, effectively ending that war. The Cherokee were given two years to migrate voluntarily, but by 1838 only 2,000 out of 18,000 had moved. The Cherokee chief at the time of removal was John Ross, who had left during the voluntary removal. The tribal members that moved during the voluntary phase were able to take wagons and their belongings with them. The ones that remained were forced into stockades and then forced to leave by bayonet point and not allowed time to gather anything — even warm clothes and footwear. Four thousand of them died of cold, hunger and disease on their long treacherous 1,000 mile march west. Native Americans were promised tribal land in Oklahoma (known as “indian Territory”), but within a short period of time the promise was broken, and the federal government broke up tribal held lands and alloted them to individuals. In 1898, Senator Henry L. Dawes and his committee determined who was eligible for tribal membership and land allotment. The result was the Final Rolls of the Five Civilized Tribes, which contain more than 101,000 names. Even though most modern Cherokee are of mixed blood, there are still a few full-blooded Cherokee living today.

W

e can’t change the past, but we can shape the future, and that is what today’s Cherokee Nation is doing. Part of that is the importance of keeping their heritage and culture alive. The Principal Chief of Cherokee Nation is Chad Smith, who is the great grandson of Redbird Smith, a Cherokee Senator. We had the honor of meeting the chief at an event, and he has proven to be a great leader for the Cherokee. He has fought to keep the rights and sovereignty of the Cherokee people. Economic development and the revitalization of the Cherokee language is important to him, and it is being taught alongside English in the schools. (You can even get the Cherokee language now on the iphone!) Cherokee is currently spoken by about 10,000 people in the Cherokee Nation, with many different dialects. In the early 1800s, Sequoyah, though he could not speak or write English, invented a syllabary for writing Cherokee. Many of the words describe feelings and ceremonies that have no comparable English translation.

T

ulsa and surrounding towns resonate with Cherokee history. Tahlequah is the capital of the Cherokee Nation, and was incorporated in 1843, more than 60 years before Oklahoma became a state in 1907. Cherokee Nation has it’s own court, police force and jail. The first Cherokee Nation Supreme Court building in Tahlequah was built in 1844, and is now a museum housing the history of the Cherokee National Judicial System, the Cherokee Advocate newspaper and printing press, photos, furniture and the Cherokee language.

www.AccentOnTampaBay.com

T

he wonderfully interesting Cherokee Heritage Center is located in Tahlequah, and stands on the grounds of the original Cherokee Female Seminary, which was burned in 1887. The only surviving architecture from the fire are the school’s columns which stand in front of the Center. The school was rebuilt in 1909 in another part of Tahlequah, and is still going today as Northeastern State University. Inside the Heritage Center is the Trail of Tears exhibit and a genealogy center, but equally compelling is what is outside. An ancient Cherokee village has been recreated, and guides demonstrate life of the times. The Cherokee didn’t live in teepees, but in homes made of “waddle and daub” (mud and sticks). An interesting twist for the times — women owned all the property inside the home, and to divorce a man, she simply placed his belongings outside. Would that it were so easy today!

A

cross from the Cherokee Heritage Center is the 100-year old Park Hill/ Owen Community Center, which was a school until 1972. The historic building is now used for events, and we enjoyed a special traditional Cherokee lunch there. A staple of Cherokee traditional food is called “The Three Sisters” - corn, beans and squash. Also on their menu you will find fried pork, grape dumplings, wild onions, hickory nut meat cooked with rice, and pokeberry (a fruit commonly grown in the area that has to be cooked down as it is toxic in its raw state).

A

nother historic home to visit is the George M. Murrell Home. Murrell moved with his Cherokee wife (and relative of Chief John Ross) during the voluntary tribe removal in the 1830s. He built a plantation style home which is rich with history of life in the mid-1800s.

P

erhaps the most famous member of the Cherokee Nation would be the beloved Will Rogers. “Oklahoma’s Favorite Son” was born in 1879 in Oologah (pronounced oo’-la-gawh) at the Dog Iron Ranch, 30 minutes northeast of Tulsa. The ranch home dates back to 1838, and is now a living history ranch with horses, cattle, sheep, and more, open daily to visitors. Will was known as the “Cowboy Indian”, being part-Cherokee (descended from a Cherokee chief). He liked to say, “My ancestors didn’t come over on the Mayflower, but they met the boat.” Will first gained fame from being a champion bronc rider and roper, but his winning personality brought him further fame as a movie star, comedian and writer who traveled all over the world. His most famous quote is “I never met a man I didn’t like.” He tragically died in a plane crash in Alaska in 1935 at the age of 56. Our visit to Dog Iron Ranch happily coincided with Will’s 131st Birthday Celebration, so in addition to visiting the home, we were treated to entertainment by expert roper Kowboy Kal, and the local school children. Andy Hogan, a Will Rogers’ interpreter answered all our questions about Will’s life. Also in attendance were Miss Cherokee, Brooke Hudson, and some of Will’s relatives and fellow actors. Will Rogers was so famous and led such an interesting life that a special museum, aptly named The Will Rogers Museum, was built to house his memorabilia. He is also interred there. Built in 1938 and remodeled in the 90s, the Will Rogers Museum is located on 20 beautiful acres (purchased by Will himself in 1911) in nearby Claremore, and has nine galleries, three theaters, interactive TV, and a special children’s museum. The birthday party spilled over to the museum, with many of the towns VIPs there to celebrate.

F

or a delightful afternoon repast we stopped in at Claremore’s historic Belvidere Mansion Tea Room — a 1902 three-story Victorian home that now serves as lovely spot for lunch or afternoon tea, and is owned and run by the Rogers County Historical Society.

W

here better than Oklahoma to find the largest private gun collection in the world? The J.M. David Arms and Historical Museum is also located in Claremore, and contains 13,000 firearms, 50,000 artifacts including saddles, spurs, local ranching brands, German beer steins, World War I posters, military weapons, John Rogers statuary, and Native American artifacts. As astonishing a collection as it is, remarkably, 95% was owned by J.M. Davis himself. Mr. Davis was a hotelier who displayed his gun collection on the wall of his lobby, which in 1929 numbered 99. The other artifacts he collected were also displayed throughout his hotel. Word of his collection spread, and folks came from all over to buy and sell or trade. He became known as a gun expert, spending around $3000 a month on guns and artifacts. Eventually, his memorabilia became too massive for his hotel, and he transferred ownership of the collection to the State of Oklahoma, with the state agreeing to build and maintain a facility to house the collection. The building was begun in 1969 and now has over 40,000 square feet of space.

A

nother connection to the Dawes Rolls is Thomas Gilcrease, who was part Creek, and came from Louisiana to Tulsa to acquire land. His land fortuitously was located on an oilfield, which gave him sufficient income to travel extensively collecting valuable art objects. The Gilcrease Museum was built in 1949, and is known as “The Smithsonian of the American West”. The priceless collection has over 10,000 paintings, Native American art and artifacts, 100,000 rare books, historical manuscripts, documents and maps. S

ince the legendary Route 66 runs through Oklahoma (with its longest drivable stretch), kitschy buffs will appreciate some of the so-bad-it’sgood attractions found along the way. The Blue Whale of Catoosa was an old swimming hole back in the day, and now it’s just a memory, but still a fun place for picnics. The Route 66 Nut House in Claremore is a rustic log cabin made from pecan logs, and they offer a variety of pecans, nuts and specialize in an eclectic — and delicious — selection of homemade fudge.

W

e stayed at the new Tulsa Hard Rock Hotel/Casino and enjoyed a comfy bed, good food and a wee bit of gambling during our trip. The hotel has 350 rooms, five restaurants (The Wild Potato Buffet and Toby Keith’s “I Love this Bar & Grill” were particular favorites of ours), nightclubs, a large casino with state-of-the-art slots, and a 2,700-seat concert venue. For golfers, there is also the beautiful Cherokee Hills Golf Course available to guests. Oh, and of course the fabulous $2 M rock ‘n roll memorabilia collection Hard Rocks are famous for, spread throughout the hotel. They have a particularly heavy collection of Jimi Hendrix (my fave) artifacts.

LookinÕGood . . . Ladies... Hate Pumping Gas?

I

f you were driving in the 1960s, you may nostalgically remember when you could pull up to a gas station and someone would come out and fill your tank, check your oil, wash off your windshield, all while you sat prettily in the driver’s seat. That all went away in the 80s (except for those lucky gals who live in NJ), and now we are left to schlep it ourselves, all while getting nasty gas, grease, grime and germs on our hands — especially annoying when you’re all dressed up. Pump Gloves to the rescue! There is a new line of stylish and protective gloves to keep a woman’s hands safe from the “Gunk at the Gas Pump.” With less mess at the pump we can feel confident and clean on our way to work, school, or to pick up the kids. Keep them handily (no pun intended) in the glove compartment. Each pair comes with a vinyl carrying case for storing when not in use. They are made from nylon spandex for a formed fit, and are completely machine washable. One size fits all, and as an added perk, they can also be used exclusively as driving gloves which offer UV protection from the sun’s harsh rays. For more information, visit www.pumpgloves.com

Photos courtesy of Gettysburg CVB he start of the five year commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg, will begin in April. Fifty thousand people either died or were wounded in only three days on a Pennsylvania field in the most famous battle of the Civil War. It is almost impossible to believe that so much heartache happened in this bucolic area filled with gentle hills and scenic farms. If only the fields and trees could talk. As you stroll the pathways and view the many memorials, it feels like you are in a church — you want to whisper and shush the children. This was the only major battle on Union soil. Even though many other battles left desolation across the country, so many died here that President Lincoln came to Gettysburg to remember the slain. The speech that he gave was only two minutes long, but is one of the most remembered speeches in history. Anyone with an interest in history should plan to be here for the anniversary. Gettysburg is located only 2 hours from Washington and Philadelphia and about 4 hours from N.Y. There will be so much to experience in the area that it’s safe to say that at least a week would be

needed to see everything. I’m not sure that’s even enough time. The first thing I would do is to visit the Museum and Visitor Center at Gettysburg National Military Park, where you get to see the world’s largest Civil War collection. The Cyclorama has recently been restored and enhanced. The painting will surround you with the fury of the war. The “voices theater” will let you hear the words of those who were at Gettysburg. You get a unique perceptive on one of the most important events in our Nation’s history. Gettysburg is a great area for a family visit, as there is something here for everyone and everything is real. The town is very pretty, with fascinating things to see and do. Have you ever met President

The entire area is full of charming little towns and villages with historic buildings, churches and old time taverns, covered bridges and antique shops. There are beautiful hotels and quaint bed and breakfast all around the area. When it’s time to eat — trust me; you will very be well fed, with everything from historic taverns from the 1700’s that serve gourmet meals to casual fast food places that are perfect for a quick bite. All and all, this is perfect place to vacation. From skiing to savoring history, you can do it all in Gettysburg anytime of the year. The 150th Anniversary is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on our nation’s past. For more information contact www.gettysburg.travel or call 717-334-6272, or toll free 1-800-337- 5015.

Lincoln? Go over to the David Wills House and have a picture taken with him. Have you ever seen a real ghost? Be very careful, this town is loaded with ghosts. At the Farnsworth House, go down into the cellar (if you dare) and you will be in the spirit world. Are you still feeling brave? Then go up to the attic. You never know you’ll meet up there. There may be long dead (or are they dead?) Confederate sharpshooters roaming about. Next plan to visit the Eisenhower National Historic site, the home of President and Mrs. Eisenhower. Enough history for now? How about a game or two of golf? Some shopping in one of the historic buildings or at an Outlet Mall? There are farmers markets and a unique lavender farm that has a lavender festival in June. www.AccentOnTampaBay.com www.AccentOnTampaBay.com

The Mob Is Back In Vegas The Mob Has Taken Over Tropicana Las Vegas! photos by Melissa Wolcott Martino

T

he new Las Vegas Mob Experience is an immersive, highly interactive journey through the history of organized crime and the impact its major players had on the building of Las Vegas. Anchored by the largest collection of authentic artifacts, memorabilia, photos and videos of organized crime ever assembled, the attraction immerses its guests in the story of the rise and fall of the “Mob” as it chronicles the lives of the men who ran Sin City for three decades. The attraction uses a wide variety of technologies in order to enhance its collection. The interactive portion of the Experience allows visitors to determine their “final fate.” As you move through the attraction, you are required to make decisions and act upon them. If you don’t get the outcome you are hoping for, you can journey through multiple times in order to experience a number of different outcomes. Live character actors and apparitions of various celebrity gangster guides including James Caan, Mickey Rourke, Steve Schirripa, Frank Vincent and Tony Sirico, help you find your way through the exhibits. Through these first person accountings, visitors are able to experience the world of organized crime and learn about the role its major players had on the building of Las Vegas, and their eventual eradication from the casinos. The Las Vegas Mob Experience captures a lost era, chronicles Las Vegas’ early years and tells the stories of the real men behind the myths. The Las Vegas Mob Experience neither glorifies nor vilifies the Mob, it presents a historically accurate view of them. The attraction is open daily from 10:00am-10:00pm at the Tropicana. The Tropicana Las Vegas has undergone a major transformation. The South Beach inspired changes to the resort include a fresh redesign of every hotel room and suite, the casino, the conference center and exhibition hall, several new restaurants, bars, a new poker room, a new race and sports book, a new spa and fitness center, and the popular Nikki Beach Night Club and Beach Club. The Bucs Are Back! he lock-out is over and the Bucs are back at One Buc Place and it’s about time. It’s been a very long 4 1/2 months, but everyone can get back to football. The Team had their first public practice on July 29. The crowds were there to greet them and everyone, fans and players, had a great time. There were quite a few new faces on the field and several familiar faces were missing. Oh well- just another day in the NFL, people come and people go, it’s just the nature of the game. Some players come, stay a year or two and move on; some stay for their entire career and retire as a Buc and we will always remember them. There are some players we wish we never met, again, just the nature of the game. The fans are looking forward to a great season, especially after the Kansas City pre-season opener blowout win. The choices that management has made so far seem to be right on the money. The players have weathered the too long delay very well. They seem to in great shape and raring to get in and win, win, win. There are several new things this year that the fans should appreciate. Fan access to training camps is much easier, they won’t need tickets to get in to the camps and there is lots of free parking. There will be autographs

singings each day by the players, coaches, cheerleaders and Capt. Fear. The kids always love that. There was a night practice at Ray Jay on Aug. 6; that was free as was the parking plus $1.00 hot dogs and soda so it made it a fun night. There wasn’t any rain so that made it even a better night. A lot of fun competitions among the players and everyone enjoyed that. The players signed so many autographs that they must have gotten writer’s cramps. The evening ended with a terrific fireworks display. It was cute to see so many of the players out on the field with their kids watching the fireworks. Wouldn’t it be nice if this display was a prelude to the one that the Bucs will have when they win this year’s Super Bowl? You never know. If any of you plan to go to the Oct.23 game against the

ampa’s own Debra Weisser invented Hem-Eze in 2008, working out of her home. She had the product patented and trademarked. Debra invented Hem-Eze out of necessity; she needed a convenient, quick, and easy way to put a temporary hem on a pair of pants. In this fast-paced world, sometimes sewing just doesn’t fit in. You don’t have to sew to use this product. Flexibility and versatility, that’s what today’s fashionistas want. Hem-Eze uses a specially formulated double sided strip, and is safe enough to use on delicate fabrics like cotton and silks, while strong enough to withstand heavier and coarser fabrics like denim and corduroy. It places an actual crease in the fabric that yields a professional hemmed look. Hem-Eze has been featured on the Today Show with Bobbie Thomas and on the NBC 15 Morning Show “Hot Trends”. It was also selected by RealSimple.Com magazine as one of their six Problem Solvers. Real Simple.com says, “End the battle between keeping your pants long to wear heels and short to wear with flats. Place Hem-Eze double-sided tape on the inside of each pant bottom. Then, when the occasion calls for stilettos, remove the tape and release the hem.” Their slogan is “Wear High Heels this morning and Sandals tonight… with HemEze.” Visit www.Hem-Eze.com for more information.

ig Cat Rescue is the world’s largest sanctuary for big cats who have been abused, abandoned, retired from performing acts, or saved from being slaughtered for fur coats. The sanctuary houses tigers, lions, leopards, cougars, bobcats, lynx, ocelots, servals, caracals and others — a total of 16 of the 35 species of wild cat, many of whom are threatened, endangered, or now extinct in the wild. At this home for rare and exotic cats, The narrow mission of Big Cat Rescue is to provide the best permanent home they can for these cats. The broader mission of the sanctuary is to reduce the number of cats that suffer the fate of abandonment and/or abuse and to encourage preservation of habitat and wildlife. People are urged to behave in a way that will support these goals by teaching people about the plight of the cats, both in the wild and in captivity. This is accomplished through guided tours, educational programs for young people, and by maintaining a website that is a great resource for information about exotic cats. Big Cat Rescue has built enclosures in a very natural habitat with foliage and shelter on a 45 acre site, and provides the best nutritional and medical care possible. They have conditioning and enrichment programs to provide for the cats physical and psychological well being. The sanctuary is supported entirely by donation. ROCKERS AND ROLLERS: FULL-THROTTLE MEMOIR

A

SEASONED: A CHEF’S WITH HER CAPTAIN

by Brian Johnson

by Victoria Allman

B

V

y night, Brian Johnson sings in the biggest rock ’n’ roll band on the planet. But by day, AC/ DC’s frontman drives balls to the wall. Cars and rock ’n’ roll — they were made for each other. When he was a young boy growing up in a working-class English town, Brian developed what would become a lifelong passion for cars, trolling junkyards and even pretending to drive the family car. From there, he steamed up the windows of his old Mini Cooper as a teenager, spent untold time in hygienically challenged tour buses with helpful signs such as No Shitting Allowed. Shagging Expected, was chauffeured in leather-trimmed limos, and raced cars to a checkered flag. Featuring guest stars Cliff Williams, Malcolm and Angus Young, and many, many others, even Arnold Schwarzenegger, Rockers and Rollers is a tribute to Brian’s obsession with four wheels. By turns surprising, poignant, funny, and maybe a little bit bawdy, these are the stories of a man who drives as hard as he rocks. In 2003 Brian Johnson was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, along with the other members of the band. He lives in Sarasota, FL. www.youritlist.com

GRAYTON BEACH AFFAIR

R

eturning to Berlin after being educated but disenchanted with America, Christian Wolfe finds that he and Germany are on a collision course with destiny. Because of his skills in English and knowledge of America, he is coerced by the German military to board a U-boat bound for the Gulf of Mexico to locate and extract a high level German officer imprisoned in a POW camp near the coast. Christian’s mission runs smoothly until he witnesses an unusual and violent act by Maggie Neal, a young woman living in Grayton Beach, against a man who had taken advantage of her and her servant. Suddenly their lives collide, resulting in a death and involvement with the local police. He and Maggie discover they need each other to survive. Sparks fly and they have a brief and passionate affair, leaving each with deep but unsettled feelings for the other. Upon returning to France, Christian relies on his instincts when an opportunity arises to reconsider his future. He joins the French Resistance and when he saves an American flyer who offers him a new start in America after the war is over, he seizes it. Arriving in Atlanta, he is determined to find Maggie, but with their relationship founded on death and deception, could they possibly build a future together? James Harvey spent his childhood years in south Alabama and the Panhandle of Florida where he became fascinated with stories of how German U-boats roamed the Gulf of Mexico during WWII. James now lives in the panhandle of Florida with his wife Marie. When he isn’t writing, he can be found fly fishing the local trout streams and Florida Keys.

FLORIDA IN THE SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR

F

lorida began as a Spanish colony, with governing headquarters in Havana, Cuba. It is fitting, then, that the state played such a large role in the Spanish-American War. As a base of training and combat operations, Florida’s involvement was crucial to the war effort. Join trusted historians Joe Knetsch and Nick Wynne as they log a fascinating chapter in Florida’s history — a time when Roosevelt’s Rough Riders prepared for battle at Tampa bases, when battleships departed from south Florida ports to avenge the sunken USS Maine and when a nation looked to the Sunshine State to help unite America around a common cause, even as the nation still struggled to come to terms with the Civil War and Reconstruction. Dr. Nick Wynne retired in 2008 from his post as executive director of the Florida Historical Society. He taught college history at several universities, including the University of South Florida, and has published more than twenty books. He currently resides in Rockledge, Florida. Dr. Joe Knetsch is a well-respected Florida historian. His Fear and Anxiety on the Florida Frontier: The Second Seminole War, was published by the Seminole Wars Foundation. He is a member of the Florida Historical Society, and has written extensively on Florida history.

HITLER’S MASTER OF THE DARK ARTS: Himmler’s Black Knights and the Occult Origins of the SS by Bill Yenne www.zenithpress.com Hitler’s Nazi Party, at its evil roots, embraced a bizarre interpretation of ancient European paganism, blending it with fragments of other traditions from sources as diverse as tenth-century Saxon warlords, nineteenthcentury spiritualism, and earlytwentieth-century fringe archeology. Even the swastika, the hated symbol of Nazism, had its roots in ancient symbolism, its first recorded appearance carved into a mammoth tusk twelve thousand years before Hitler came to power. At the heart of the evil was Hitler’s “witch doctor,” Heinrich Himmler, and his stranger-than-fiction cult, the deadly SS. Hitler’s Master of the Dark Arts is the first history of the SS and its leader to focus on the mystical cult aspects of the organization. It follows Himmler’s transformation of the SS from a few hundred members in 1929 to over fifty thousand black-uniformed Aryans by the mid-1930s. Concurrent with its expansion and its eventual independence from the brown shirts of the SA, Himmler infused the Black Knights with a mishmash of occult beliefs and lunatic-fringe theories that were used to justify the Final Solution.

Jon Lewis’s study of the film looks at the significance of The Godfather in Hollywood’s dramatic box-office turnaround in the 1970s and offers a critical and historical discussion of The Godfather’s place within the crime and gangster film genre. Lewis focuses on the film as a commercial as well as an artistic landmark of American auteur cinema, as a singularly important film in Hollywood studio history and as a brilliant reworked modern genre picture that at once adopts and adapts the gangster film. The Book of Five Rings was composed in 1643 by the famed duelist and undefeated samurai Miyamoto Musashi. Unlike previous editions of The Book of Five Rings, Thomas Cleary’s is an accessible translation, free of jargon, with an introduction that presents the spiritual background of the warrior tradition. Along with Musashi’s text, Cleary translates another important Japanese classic on leadership and strategy: The Book of Family Traditions on the Art of War by Yagyu Munenori, which highlights the ethical and spiritual insights of Taoism and Zen as they apply to the way of the warrior.
