Sturdy, deeply personal statements, brimming with poignancy.” The New York Times also praised the album, saying it “showcases Mr. Groban’s songwriting” and “reflects the conviction that gallantry can also be pensive and uncertain.” Groban recently performed the National Anthem at the 60th Annual NBA All-Star Game in Los Angeles. www.sptimesforum.com/ www.AccentOnTampaBay.com

Toby Keith

TOBY KEITH W/ ERIC CHURCH AND JT HODGES - Fri, Oct 14 Bullets In The Gun, Toby Keith’s 15th studio album, is a defining career milestone. But then, so have been each of his previous releases. And that’s the real point. Any attempt to explain, qualify or quantify Toby Keith that doesn’t start and end with the full breadth of his music is radically misdirected. For it is in his music – the art and craft of it and, just as significantly, the unwavering embrace of the audience – that we can best define a songwriter/performer now in his 18th consecutive year at the top of the charts. Eric Church is on a mission. You might expect someone coming off of their first two Top Ten country singles and an ACM Award for “Top New Solo Vocalist” to lock down the formula and go for more of the same, but with third album, “Chief”, Church is trying something bolder and using the opportunity provided by his success to push his music even further. ANTHRAX, TESAMENT, DEATH ANGEL TOUR - House Of Blues, Orlando, Thurs, Nov 1 Anthrax and Testament, who haven’t toured together in more than a decade, will be bringing their show to the House Of Blues in Orlando on Thursday, Nov 1. Both Anthrax and Death Angel are debuting brand new material from their new albums, both set for fall release; Testament’s new album is set to be released in 2012. “We’ve been tight with the guys in Testament for a long, long time,” said Anthrax’s Charlie Benante, “so we’re really looking forward to hanging out with them on the road. And all of us in Anthrax are big Death Angel fans, so this is going to be a monster of a good time - for all of us and for the fans. Plus, with the incredible success of The Big Four shows over the last year, we wanted to tour with some of the ‘second wave’ of thrash bands.” “We’re excited to do this tour because Anthrax was actually the first band we ever toured with,” adds Testament vocalist Chuck Billy. “It’s an accomplishment 20 odd years later that we’re going to do it again. The first time we performed with Anthrax, we only had a total of ten songs, so obviously now we have many songs to pick from so it will be very different. It’s good to see that a lot of the faces in the bands are the same as back when we first did this original tour 20 years ago.” www.houseofblues.com www.AccentOnTampaBay.com

A LIFELIKE STORY is a young New Jersey based pop/rock trio consisting of Bryan Welsh on vocals and guitar, Garrett Hoffman on bass and vocals and Chris Mueller on drums. Their songwriting is a collaborative effort, and is ever-evolving as the band’s music expands. Their music can’t be pigeonholed at the moment, with the band being influenced by acts such as 30 Seconds To Mars, Panic At The Disco, and The Killers. Legendary guitar virtuoso and world music pioneer AL DI MEOLA’s latest outing PURSUIT OF RADICAL RHAPSODY was years in the making. It showcases his mastery of complex rhythmic syncopation combined with provocative lyrical melodies and sophisticated harmony. By turns tender and spirited, the album features soulful Di Meola compositions. Working with World Sinfonia, he has created a collection of 15 entrancing tracks that highlight his unparalleled technique on both acoustic and electric guitar. www.aldimeola.com

Welsh alt-pop duo PAPER AEROPLANES’ debut effort, THE DAY WE RAN INTO THE SEA is a mixture of folk and acoustic elements laced the electric guitars and Celtic undertones (contributed to by producer Jon Reynolds, who’s worked with the likes of Sinead O’Connor). The album also features sonic contributions from Head (PJ Harvey), John Reynolds (Sinead O’Conner, Belinda Carlisle) and Matt Prime (Will Young, Kelly Clarkson, Natalie Imbruglia). Each song has a commercial pop sensibility topped off with poignant lyrics and vocalist Sarah Howells’ haunting ‘one of a kind’ voice. The CD is a musical memoir that details the raw, universal feelings and experiences we all go through when dealing with break ups and shake ups, love and loss. www.okgoodrecords.com On KICKING IT WITH THE TWITS, the pioneering cowpunk band, HICKOIDS, show another side that’s just as important to their style as the C&W they delightfully twist and debauch. This eight-song mini-album takes songs by original British invaders The Rolling Stones and The Who, glam era stars like Slade, Brian Eno and Mott The Hoople as well as cult heroes The Move along with punk originators The Damned and the inimitable Sir Elton and dress them up in Hickoids drag to create a simmering, slamming slab of transatlantic rocking. www.hickoids.com

The quartet that LESLIE PINTCHIK has assembled for her third CD WE’RE HERE TO LISTEN (with Scott Hardy on bass, Mark Dodge on drums and percussionist Satoshi Takeishi) is one that really knows how to listen, both to each other and to the evolving narrative of the music they create together as an ensemble. The longevity of this quartet (12 years) and the deep musicianship of all four of its members allow the full range of Pintchik’s rather unusual voice as composer, arranger and pianist to emerge. The playlist includes a mix of seven strong originals, and three very intriguing arrangements of well known tunes. www.lesliepintchik.com With his new album, EZRA WEISS reaffirms his status as one of the premier young jazz pianists and composers of today. THE SHIRLEY HORN SUITE finds him heightening his sense of elevation and refinement in a trio format with up-and-coming string bassist Corcoran Holt and veteran drummer Steve Williams. The special guest vocalist is Shirley Nanette, a Pacific Northwest jazz legend. Weiss gives us his affectionate appreciation of Shirley Horn, an unforgettable pianist and singer whose way with beautiful melodies, harmonic coloration, and rhythm alterations made her the toast of the jazz world in the 1980s and ’90. Weiss’ Suite is a thing of beauty. Confident and relaxed, Weiss and his colleagues make the most of touch, space, dynamics, and phrasing. www.ezraweiss.com

grand piano in the sanctuary of St. Peter’s Church of Ireland in the country town of Drogheda. Although the CD resembles a live recording, there was no audience except his recording engineer Brian Masterson. During the tenhour session, Johnston played each tune once or twice, and later there was no overdubbing, editing or combining of takes. As evening came on, he had the lights turned off for the last half of the session. Every melody on The Shape of Things was composed in advance, but during the recording session Johnston improvised on each tune. This solo piano will have appeal with the new age and neo-classical music fans. www.joshjohnston.com MIHO: JOURNEY TO THE MOUNTAIN was recorded in Japan’s Miho Museum (designed by I.M. Pei) by the PAUL WINTER CONSORT. Intertwining with taiko drums, bansuri flute, sarangi fiddle and Paul Winter’s clear sax are the birdcalls, waterfalls, and bells of the Miho. All serve to form a shifting, meditative image of paradise found and reflected in the glass and steel of a great architect, in the warp and clay of ancient artisans. Winter refers to his work as “Earth Music”, celebrating the cultures and creatures of the whole earth. wwwpaulwinter.com Take a journey into the healing sounds of GAIA with MICHAEL BRANT DEMARIA, Pd.D. WORLD JIENAT’s release, MIRA, was recorded on a Finnish island in an old parish hall, putting age-old sounds in a cutting-edge frame. Drawing on everything from Sámi (Laplander) joiking (a form of chantlike singing from an indigenous people in Scandinavia) and Finnish-style musical saw to Afro-Uruguayan rhythms and Argentine vendors’ cries, the band’s influences are obvious: West Africa, Sámi culture, Bahia. Norwegian multi-instrumentalist and recording engineer Andreas Fliflet is behind Jienat. Mira conveys Fliflet’s wry love for his Arctic home, for its crazy weather, white nights, rusty Russian trawlers, and herds of errant reindeer. Fliflet muses, “While the recording technique is cutting edge, there is really nothing essential in the music that could not have been done 5,000 years ago—or 5,000 years from now.” Mira includes an audio-only Blu-Ray disc as well as a standard CD/high-def SACD. www.jienat.com. Piano-based folk singer SARA BANLEIGH’s album THE FOLK presents Sara’s riveting arrangements of traditional folk tunes, offering a rare and fascinating take on this age-old music. The album offers her interpretation of 5 traditional English, Scottish, and Irish folk songs, each of them several hundred years old. With intricate piano orchestration, compelling vocals, and a handful of other acoustic instruments, the EP offers a fresh and spellbinding journey through this ancient genre of music. www.sarabanleigh.com The maiden voyage of the “Cubist” band—an octet of artists playing music that grew in JERRY LEAKE’s studio CD— took place at Ryles Jazz Club to a sold out house. With a line-up of great international and local talent the music and energy was at its highest level. Now in his 30th year of a successful career in percussion, he is living the dream of realizing his music in the hands of some of the greatest musicians and improvisers of our time on JERRY LEAKE & CUBIST LIVE, his new world/rock fusion CD. Tasty Food and Drinks! Frugal Foodies: How to Save on Dining Out by Andrea Woroch

E

nough with the home-cooked meals. It’s time to get out of the house and let someone else prepare your food for a change. In response to tight budgets, frugal advisers have recommended for some time now that we stay at home to save money. But such deprivation grows old fast, so maybe it’s time to consider these six tips to help you spread your dining wings without crash landing your budget. 1. FOURSQUARE DEALS Members check-in to various locations on their mobile phones using this service, but did you know you can also receive offers for freebies and discounts simply by letting FourSquare know where you are? Check out a recent segment on FOX & Friends for a “how to” on

using the app for restaurant savings. 2. TRACK DAILY DEALS Restaurants are one of the most common frequenters of daily deal offerings, so it pays to keep an eye out for vouchers that can greatly reduce the cost of dining at a new or favored eatery. Just make sure you read the small print and are aware of expiration dates and exclusions. For example, most restaurant vouchers don’t include drinks. 3. GET HAPPY Eating early isn’t just for our elders. Happy hour ad early bird deals have become more common as restaurants try to fill in slow-traffic

times. For example, Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill offers full-size appetizers for under $5 before 6 p.m., plus $3 drink specials. 4. SPLIT IT UP American restaurants usually overload our plates -- unless they’re into nuvo cuisine -- so there’s often enough food for two in a single order. You can cut your costs down to around $20 by simply sharing an appetizer, entree and dessert with a friend or date. 5. GIFT YOURSELF We tend to think of gift cards in terms of what we can offer others, but they’re actually very useful for individual purchases. Sites like GiftCardGranny.com let you purchase gift cards for several restaurants at a discounted rate, yielding immediate savings of up to 50 percent. 6. MATCHPIN If you live in one of nine major cities, you might download the free MatchPin app. Membership brings you offers, rewards, contests and announcements from a variety of local restaurants. Baking To End Hunger Twice As Sweet In October

uncan Hines is matching funds raised for Share Our Strength’s Great American Bake Sale through October. Last year, nearly 3,200 individuals held bake sales nationwide raising more than $700,000 to benefit Share Our Strength’s Great American Bake Sale — funds the organization uses to connect children and their families with much needed hunger-relief resources. According to Share Our Strength, $1 can help connect a child facing hunger with up to 10 meals. This year bakers across the country have again been raising money, and the stakes just got a bit sweeter, thanks to corporate sponsor Duncan Hines. For the month of October, Duncan Hines is matching each dollar raised for the Great American Bake Sale, (up to $50,000 through October 31, 2011). To get started, visit www.GreatAmericanBakeSale.org\signup. ucked behind Disney World’s very grand Grand Floridian Resort is a restaurant that may go unnoticed — but definitely shouldn’t — with the somewhat odd name of Narcoossee’s. The name may be quirky (Creek Indian for “Little Bear”) but the food certainly isn’t. In fact, Narcoossee’s is a Disney gem.

Story and photos by Melissa Wolcott Martino

The location of the restaurant and it’s expansive windows affords guests a spectacular view of the Seven Seas Lagoon, the Magic Kingdom beyond, and, of course, the nighttime fireworks show. Also in the mix is the nostalgic electrical water parade that makes its circuit around the Magic Kingdom resorts. Kids (and grownups too) will really enjoy seeing the colorfully lighted creatures from under the sea. Comfortable and open, Narcoossee’s is a breath of fresh air, and welcoming to couples and families alike. Chef Joe Wilson has crafted a menu that is heavy on seafood, but also plenty of wonderful choices for the landlubber. Our party began our dining journey with tasty appetizers of Jumbo Lump Crab Cake with Grilled Zellwood Corn Relish and Ancho Chili Sauce, a Lobster Spring Roll, and Prince Edward Island Mussels, paired deliciously with a South African Wild Yeast Chardonnay with a slight pineapple flavor. The salad course proved to be sublime — Roasted Beets with chervil, Frisee, Goat Cheese, Candied Pecans, and an Orange-Homey Vinaigrette, and served with another South African wine — a Rudera ‘Robusto’ Chenin Blanc, Stellenbosch, which was crisp and spicy. For entrees, we chose varied items, all of which were met with great enthusiasm. The Grilled Filet Mignon was

melt-in-your-mouth tender and flavorful, and served with Potato Gratin, Baby Vegetables and Bernaise Sauce. A table favorite proved to be the Togarashi-spiced Blue Fin tuna and Jumbo Prawn, served with Sticky Rice, Tobiko, Wakame, Soy-Citrus Sauce and Wasabi Cream. The lobster lovers loved the Steamed Whole Maine Lobster served with Baked Sherry-cheddar Orecchiette Pasta and Delta Asparagus. The artful presentation of the Crispy Whole Snapper with Basmati Rice, Charred Green Beans and Soy-Lime Vinaigrette drew a collective delighted gasp from the whole table. Narcoossee’s waiters always have great suggestions for wine pairings, and no one was disappointed with their choice.

Who would want my old object? That’s where human nature gets in the way. It’s this attitude that loses you money, big money. People call my office or email me and ask this question over and over again: “I have a (insert any antique object here), does it have any value?” My answer is always that everything has value. And even your object has value! have to laugh when a so called “expert” (also known as some people who write a story or a blog about the antiques market after interviewing three people who hosted yard sales) writes a column or posts an online blog and lists which items are “hot” right now. They rarely get it right. That is yet another misguided attempt to compile that single, comprehensive list of what is worth keeping. In short, those lists are bogus.

First of all, most people know what is valuable to them. But, most people don’t know what’s valuable to other people. For instance, if someone is trying to get rid of an old pool table that has become obsolete, they have a hard time realizing that someone else would want that pool table. Once you have no use for an object, you figure no one else has use for it either. That’s why people ask me,

The real questions are how much value does it have? How does that dollar value relate to you? For instance, some of the richest people in the world like Warren Buffett, Bill Gates, and Oprah Winfrey probably wouldn’t think that a couple of aging Barbie dolls worth $150 each are valuable. If you are not Mr. Gates and are, instead, an unemployed lion tamer who found these dolls in their original boxes in your neighbor’s trash, it would probably be more valuable to you. Do you get it? Value is relative. Some people will bother going after $150 by selling those valuable Barbies and other people won’t.

Experts know that the collectibles market is not about trends, it’s about quality objects and historical or cultural interest. If you are banking on making money on a trend, you are dealing in the collectibles market in the same way a gambler would play the roulette table. Trends are a crap shoot, a lottery ticket, a slim chance at a big win. Trends are those flash in the pan items that never hold their value very long like the Pet Rock, or Beanie Babies. Those items had some interest at one time, made some money for the manufacturers and the marketers, but they say nothing about culture, history, or what’s of interest to contemporary society. The objects that relate to history are those with real value and have staying power in the marketplace. When it comes to collecting, you want to acquire objects that say something about our society at large, the historical period in which it was made, or a technological innovation. Assessing valuables and smart collecting is not about fads, it’s about knowing the facts.

ued at $2,000 to $4,000 depending on many factors. The Soyer lithograph, depending on condition and subject matter, commands as much as $5,000. 3. Mother is cleaning out grandma’s home in order to sell it. Grandma has moved to a healthcare facility and needs as much money as possible from liquidating her belongings. Mother asks her only son whether she should trash grandma’s costume jewelry or try to sell it online. Her son does some internet research but o you have the chore of cleaning out grandma’s house? Are you downsizing and cannot fit everything into your new place? Hosting a yard sale and separating sale items from trash? My popular quiz game, “Dumpster or No Dumpster” will help you determine what to do with your art, antiques, and collectibles. I evaluate approximately 20,000 objects every year at public events and in private homes like yours. My job is to research the market and provide accurate appraisals based on actual sales records where somebody paid cash, wrote a check, or swiped a credit card for an item. I’ll help you make informed decisions about buying, selling, insuring, donating, handing down or disposing of family heirlooms. Test your knowledge with the “Dumpster or No Dumpster” quiz. 1. You want to know if it is worth the time and energy to move your grandma’s old Victorian settee and matching parlor chair out of the attic and onto the front lawn in order to sell it at your yard sale. Do you move it or continue to store it? A. Move it and sell it at the yard sale B. Keep storing it in the attic C. None of the above Answer: C. A yard sale is a very poor market to sell antique and vintage furniture. Typically, you will get less than 10% of the object’s actual value by selling it this way. And, if you store it, the attic is one of the worst places to store antiques as temperature and humidity changes significantly and can impact the condition and value of the antiques. 2. You are downsizing and have to decide whether to keep grandma’s collection of 10 hand-painted and glazed earthenware Hummel figurines or a original lithographic print by American realist artist, Moses Soyer from the early decades of the 1900s. Which makes it to the dumpster? A. The Hummel figurines B. The Soyer lithograph Answer: A. Based solely on monetary value, keep the original work of art by Moses Soyer. Long term, the artwork will retain value and increase in value at a greater rate over time than the collectible figurines. But, the Hummel collection is not worth peanuts, mind you. A typical 6 inch tall Hummel sculpture of a single figure in Sister Hummel’s characteristic style resells for $200 to $400. For a collection of ten Hummels, they would be val-

comes up empty, finding many different opinions about the value and collectability of costume jewelry. Should you trash the Trifari, Weiss, Coro, Maravella, Haskell, and Lane pieces of costume jewelry? A. Yes. Only the real jewelry (14 karat gold, sterling silver) is worth keeping. B. No. It has value with collectors. Answer: B. Costume jewelry is a very profitable collectible category in the vintage jewelry market. Sky high prices are paid for jelly belly brooches, faux black diamond necklaces, Miriam Haskell seed pearl pins, and Austrian crystal bracelets, etc. Costume jewelry is often bought and sold for big bucks. If you don’t know what to trash and what to cherish, you stand to lose a lot of money. ART LINES

STORY AND SYMBOL: Dutch And Flemish Paintings From The Collection Of Dr. Gordon And Adele Gilbert Thru Dec 4 The more than 30 paintings in this exhibition are striking, but they are also rich in the history of sixteenth and seventeenth-century northern Europe. The works encompass biblical stories, mythological subjects, stunning portraits, scenes from everyday life, seascapes and landscapes, and still lifes. The Gilberts, who have developed this exceptional collection over more than 30 years, were attracted to these paintings in part because so many explore biblical stories. These marvelous paintings also reveal cultures ascending, becoming more literate and interested in the arts, trying to establish a new Eden. A number of the works celebrate the common pleasures of life—eating and drinking, sensuality, even the sheer beauty of objects. A warning, however, usually arises, telling us that these delights are transitory, just like life itself. Many important artists are represented. They include Abraham Bloemaert, Paulus Potter, Michiel Jansz.van Mierevelt, Leonaert Bramer, Frans Francken the Younger, Frans Hals, Jan van Goyen, Jan Davidsz. de Heem (a brilliant Still Life with a Silver Pitcher), Melchior d’Hondecoeter, Karel van Mander, Aert van der Neer, Jan Steen, and Hendrick Cornelisz. van Vliet. THE NEW YORK SCHOOL: Selections from The Gollay Collection - thru November 27 This exhibition presents approximately 35 paintings, sculptures, and works on paper from the fascinating collection of Benjamin Gollay. Works by Robert Motherwell and Willem de Kooning are standouts. De Kooning’s Woman is inscribed “To Ben and Jean from Bill.” Among the other artists represented are Norman Bluhm, Robert de Niro Sr. (the Oscar-winning actor’s father), Michael Goldberg, and Milton Resnick. FOUR PORTFOLIOS OF THE TWENTIETH-CENTURY: ARCHIPENKO, GROPPER, EVANS, AND DOISNEAU Thru Nov 13 Archipenko’s Sixteen Lithographs, known as the Wasmuth portfolio (1921), is an outstanding early body of work. Commissioned by the noted publisher Ernst Wasmuth of Berlin, the prints were created soon after the modernist sculptor departed from the Paris art world and broke with the Cubists. Gropper’s portfolio of color lithographs, the Watergate

Suite (1973), is being shown for the first time. Gropper was a social realist whose art came of age during the Great Depression. Here he addresses the congressional hearings on the Watergate scandal, which led to Richard Nixon’s resignation. Doisneau’s photographs capture Paris and its environs from 1944-1972. They reveal his love for the city, as well as his abundant sense of humor and humanity. Doisneau’s photographs have been instrumental in creating the vision of Paris in the popular imagination. Evans’s posthumously published portfolio contains some of his earliest photographs, including signature photographs of the South, created under the auspices of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) during the 1930s, as well as works from the late stage of his career. These diverse portfolios encourage us to explore the past century through documentary and street photography, modernist experimentation, and political imagery and commentary. 255 Beach Dr. N.E., St. Petersburg, 727-8962667. www.fine-arts.org

THE HILLSBOROUGH RIVER: FROM THE GREEN SWAMP TO THE BAY: Works by Karen Glaser - thru Oct 16 In 2010, the City of Tampa selected Karen Glaser as its Photographer Laureate. Glaser’s project was to pay tribute

to the diversity and complexity of the Hillsborough River. Since the 1990s, Glaser has chronicled the ecosystems and in particular its freshwater springs, rivers, and swamps of Florida. According to the artist, “the State of Florida has a truly interesting history and a remarkable cultural and natural heritage. It is home to some of the most unique natural areas in the world, and the tie that binds all in this most diverse state is water.” For Glaser in the current works, “the paradoxical scenery of the Hillsborough River — as I traveled through time both culturally and naturally from the swamp through the city — was irresistibly compelling. I allowed the work to bend and flow, in whatever direction the experience took me all the while creating work that reflected the life and character of Tampa in a very special way.”

WORLDS APART: MYTH & HISTORY, GODS & MORTALS, HEROES & HYBRIDS - thru Nov 20 Worlds Apart explores the many intersecting spheres of the world of classical antiquity, in particular those of myth and history, gods and mortals, heroes and hybrids. For rather than a single, discrete time and place, classical antiquity might be better described as a series of diverse and intersecting spheres—worlds apart from our own but also from one another. During the period covered in this exhibition, from about 2500 B.C. to A.D. 500, the vast areas of the Mediterranean Sea and surrounding lands were believed to have witnessed countless episodes, some verified by archaeology and historic accounts, others now considered wholly legendary. In this exhibition, objects have been grouped so as to accentuate both similarities and differences between myth and history, gods and mortals, heroes and hybrids. REALISM: SELECTIONS FROM THE MARTIN Z. MARGULIES COLLECTION - Nov 20 - Dec 31 In the second exhibition drawn upon the partnership between the Tampa Museum of Art and the Martin Z. Margulies Collection in Miami, Realism provides a compelling view of the realist tendencies in the visual arts of the last 30 years. Juxtaposing stellar examples of the PhotoRealist movement in painting with a selection of sculptural installations by leading contemporary artists who push the boundaries of what constitutes realism in our highly charged environment, the exhibition includes artists such as William Beckman, Davis Cone, Leandro Erlich, Tony Oursler, and William Ryman. FLORIDA MUSEUM of PHOTOGRAPHIC ARTS LIFE AND DEATH BY DUANE MICHALS - thru Nov 6 The Florida Museum of Photographic Arts is dedicated to presenting the highest quality photography. This includes works by contemporary photographic artists who push the envelope in today’s art world - or who are already considered part of the artistic canon. In this spirit, they are exhibiting the works of Duane Michals. He is well respected in the art world, his work being collected by major art museums in the United States and Europe. Just as painters in mid-20th century used the physical peculiarities of their medium (paint, brushes, canvas) to pioneer new ideas, Ansel Adams used the peculiarities of the camera and photography: the perfectly framed scene; the decisive moment to click the shutter; the correct exposure, the single, impeccable image. But Michals tossed those traditions, reaching out (as a later generation of artists did) to incorporate techniques outside traditional photography. He breached the connection between still photography and movies with his staged sequential shots. He also added the written word to his works declaring, “I write in order to express what the photo itself cannot say.” Michals is a man who broke the rules to create his own game. The exhibition will also include his photographic portraits of such celebrities as Robert Duval, Tennessee Williams and Andy Warhol. “TIPS FOR CHOOSING THE BEST PET FOR YOUR FAMILY” by Heidi Ganahl, CEO and founder of Camp Bow Wow Age-Old Wisdom: Be sure your new pet correlates with the ages of those in the household. A good rule of thumb: the new pet should fit the current physical capabilities of the caretakers with a perspective for what the next 10-15 years will bring. It is not advised to bring a pet five months or younger, or toysized, into a home with young children. As young pets like to teethe and play, a young child may risk being bitten by a playful pet or may accidentally injure a toy-sized pet. A better choice for a household with young children is a medium-to-large sized pet over five months of age. o If there are elderly members in a household, a strong vigorous adolescent pet is not advised. Large breeds also demand more physical upkeep, something that an older person may no longer be fit for. Establish the Primary Caretaker: As most families are extremely busy, figuring out who will take care of the new family pet while the others are working, at school or away is a key point to consider. The best decision to make before buying a new pet is to designate a primary caretaker who will be responsible for it when the fray of life picks up. A Gift for the Whole Family: Although it is exciting to surprise the family with a new pet for the holidays, the best approach is to bring the family to meet the candidate and gauge how they all interact. Do some research and poll each family member to find out what they are looking for in a new pet so that the pet you choose aligns with the circumstances of the household. The Price of a New Pet – Money: A new pet can go for “free-toa-good-home” to several thousand dollars. A budget must be set not only for the upfront cost of taking the pet home, but also for immediate follow-up costs like veterinary check-ups, a training crate and pet obedience classes. Also keep in mind that your pet will need to be fed and groomed and will also need chew toys and additional supplies like food bowls, a dog bed, brushes, leashes, etc. Also keep in mind the necessary chunk of money needed for veterinary emergencies. The Price of a New Pet – Time & Energy: A new pet will cost the family by ways of time and energy. Various breeds and ages will make different demands, requiring more time in training and daily exercise than others. Any pet will require exercise, training and supervision and any age pet will require commitment from the family to establish house rules and routines. First Annual Florida Panther Festival Sheds Light On Issues Facing Florida’s State Animal The first annual Florida Panther Festival on October 29 at North Collier Regional Park in Naples, Florida will shed light on the plight of the endangered Florida panther through interactive activities about the Florida panther’s life and habitat. Activities include presentations by panther biologists, a Living with Wildlife Pavilion, interactive walks, fun and educational activities for children, livestock pen demonstration, live bluegrass music, food vendors, information from various conservation agencies and organizations in panther territory, and much more. The Festival is free of charge. The previous day, Friday, October 28, a variety of field trips are available into areas in southwest Florida where panthers roam. Various fees apply to field trips. The Living with Wildlife Pavilion will provide area residents proactive steps that can be taken to protect pets and livestock on private property from any wildlife. The Pavilion will be staffed by panther biologists and will include tools biologists use to monitor panthers, capture videos, demonstration livestock pen, handouts, and the popular Adopta-Panther program. The sounds of bluegrass music will enliven the Festival with live performances by two bands, Frontline Bluegrass and the BugTussle Ramblers. Fascinating presentations by panther biologists and panther research team members will take place throughout the day. Presentations will include secrets of panther capture techniques, why biologists track panthers, how orchids play a role in panther habitat health, and even what it’s like to hold a Florida panther kitten. There will also be face painting, children’s games, and food vendors throughout the day. On-site adventures at the Festival include the “Walk the Panther Mile”. Rangers from Big Cypress National Preserve will guide a one mile walk on the trail at North Collier Regional Park. Along the way, you’ll discover interesting facts about Florida panthers, learn about their habitat, and look for tracks and other signs of wildlife at the

park. You’ll also meet one of the Preserve’s panther biologists and hear about the research they’re doing in the Preserve. The free two-hour educational walk requires advance registration and takes place four times on Saturday. Free Panther Tales walks will also take place throughout the day and are open to everyone first-come, first-serve. Panther Tales will be short, leisurely walks along the park’s trails to look for signs of wildlife and learn about Florida panthers. “Our goal is to hold this free event every year for families and visitors to celebrate the Florida panther and become aware of responsible actions for safe coexistence of panthers with communities, livestock and pets” says Ben Nottingham, Refuge Manager of Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge. “Attendees will learn about the issues facing panthers living in the wild and also about the research conducted by various agencies that help the panther’s existence in southwest Florida.” Friday field trips require registration. Choices include a guided swamp buggy tour and hike at the Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge, a bird rookery swamp trail hike at the CREW Land & Water Trust’s public hiking trails, an extensive swamp buggy ride through Big Cypress National Preserve, a guided tour of Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary’s boardwalk, and guided bicycle tours through Picayune Strand State Forest and Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park. Various costs apply to the field trips. FLORIDA PANTHER INFORMATION: The Florida panther (Puma concolor coryi) is the last subspecies of Puma still surviving in the eastern United States. Historically occurring throughout the southeastern U.S., today the Florida panther is restricted to less than 5% of its historic range in one breeding population in south Florida. The panther population, while increased from a low of 12-20 adults in the 1980s, is still facing numerous threats to its population. With an estimate of between just 100-160 adults, the Florida panther remains one of the most endangered mammals in the world. ig Cat Rescue is the world’s largest sanctuary for big cats who have been abused, abandoned, retired from performing acts, or saved from being slaughtered for fur coats. The sanctuary houses tigers, lions, leopards, cougars, bobcats, lynx, ocelots, servals, caracals and others — a total of 16 of the 35 species of wild cat, many of whom are threatened, endangered, or now extinct in the wild. At this home for rare and exotic cats, The narrow mission of Big Cat Rescue is to provide the best permanent home they can for these cats. The broader mission of the sanctuary is to reduce the number of cats that suffer the fate of abandonment and/or abuse and to encourage preservation of habitat and wildlife. People are urged to behave in a way that will support these goals by teaching people about the plight of the cats, both in the wild and in captivity. This is accomplished through guided tours, educational programs for young people, and by maintaining a website that is a great resource for information about exotic cats. Big Cat Rescue has built enclosures in a very natural habitat with foliage and shelter on a 45 acre site, and provides the best nutritional and medical care possible. They have conditioning and enrichment programs to provide for the cats physical and psychological well being. The sanctuary is supported entirely by donation. Big Cat Rescue is located at 12802 Easy Street, Tampa. Call 813-920-4130 for more information, or visit BigCatRescue.org.

Let’s try to vision a Sunday scene set on October 9. The air is ripe with that fresh “fall” feeling, soft calypso music is wafting through 100 year-old oak trees and you’re putting out the fire in your mouth with a nice cool Corona. Imagine yourself doing all that as you stroll by bright pink Chilean flamingos in the lush and tropical atmosphere at Sunken Gardens and I bet you’re ready to yell, “I’m headed for the hot tamale train!” The Pepper Fest, however, isn’t all about how much damage you can do to your taste buds. While the price for admission is under ten bucks you might want to pack some extra greenbacks for the assortment of hot pepper themed vendors offering up everything from artwork, clothing, and jewelry to pepper jellies and plants that vary in price and palette. An assortment of restaurants will also be on hand to tempt you with flavors ranging from “not-hot-at-all” to “Call the paramedics!” Basically, whatever your taste may be, there is something in store for you when the hot tamale train boards October 9th. The question is…Can you take it?

O u t O f A P a in f u l Past C o m e s A B r ig h t F u t u re Story and Photos by Melissa Wolcott and Al Martino

O

siyo! (Pronounced oh-see-oh) means “hello in Cherokee, and it is an expression you hear a lot in Oklahoma, where upwards of 300,000 members of the Cherokee Nation reside. Oklahoma has the largest population of Native Americans in the United States (which has over 500 different Indian nations spread throughout the country). But it is the Cherokees of Tulsa we visited and learned about.

www.AccentOnTampaBay.com

O

ur first encounter with a member of the Cherokee Nation was with our blonde-haired, blue-eyed taxi driver from the Tulsa airport to the Hard Rock Tulsa Hotel/Casino. Not exactly stereotypical of what you perceive a Native American to look like, but Cherokee he was. Anyone who’s ancestor signed the “Dawes Rolls” back in 18981914 is entitled to claim Cherokee heritage rights, or the rights of any of the 5 “civilized” tribes — Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Creek (a.k.a Muscogee) or Seminole. The Tribes were termed “civilized” by white settlers because they lived European style as farmers, built brick buildings, dressed more European style and had organized forms of government.

T

he Dawes Rolls takes us back in time to one of our country’s greatest shames — The heinous “Trail of Tears” in the 1830s-40s. European settlers saw Native Americans as a threat to their plans for expansion, and as a result, the Five Tribes were removed from their homelands east of the Mississippi, at first voluntarily, and then by force. The forced removal is referred to as The Trail of Tears. Andrew Jackson is not looked on fondly in history by the Cherokees, as it was he who spearheaded their removal — and this after they, with their great Cherokee chief, Sequoyah, heroically fought along side him in the War of 1812, winning the Battle of Horseshoe Bend, effectively ending that war. The Cherokee were given two years to migrate voluntarily, but by 1838 only 2,000 out of 18,000 had moved. The Cherokee chief at the time of removal was John Ross, who had left during the voluntary removal. The tribal members that moved during the voluntary phase were able to take wagons and their belongings with them. The ones that remained were forced into stockades and then forced to leave by bayonet point and not allowed time to gather anything — even warm clothes and footwear. Four thousand of them died of cold, hunger and disease on their long treacherous 1,000 mile march west. Native Americans were promised tribal land in Oklahoma (known as “indian Territory”), but within a short period of time the promise was broken, and the federal government broke up tribal held lands and alloted them to individuals. In 1898, Senator Henry L. Dawes and his committee determined who was eligible for tribal membership and land allotment. The result was the Final Rolls of the Five Civilized Tribes, which contain more than 101,000 names. Even though most modern Cherokee are of mixed blood, there are still a few full-blooded Cherokee living today.

W

e can’t change the past, but we can shape the future, and that is what today’s Cherokee Nation is doing. Part of that is the importance of keeping their heritage and culture alive. The Principal Chief of Cherokee Nation is Chad Smith, who is the great grandson of Redbird Smith, a Cherokee Senator. We had the honor of meeting the chief at an event, and he has proven to be a great leader for the Cherokee. He has fought to keep the rights and sovereignty of the Cherokee people. Economic development and the revitalization of the Cherokee language is important to him, and it is being taught alongside English in the schools. (You can even get the Cherokee language now on the iphone!) Cherokee is currently spoken by about 10,000 people in the Cherokee Nation, with many different dialects. In the early 1800s, Sequoyah, though he could not speak or write English, invented a syllabary for writing Cherokee. Many of the words describe feelings and ceremonies that have no comparable English translation.

T

ulsa and surrounding towns resonate with Cherokee history. Tahlequah is the capital of the Cherokee Nation, and was incorporated in 1843, more than 60 years before Oklahoma became a state in 1907. Cherokee Nation has it’s own court, police force and jail. The first Cherokee Nation Supreme Court building in Tahlequah was built in 1844, and is now a museum housing the history of the Cherokee National Judicial System, the Cherokee Advocate newspaper and printing press, photos, furniture and the Cherokee language.

www.AccentOnTampaBay.com

T

he wonderfully interesting Cherokee Heritage Center is located in Tahlequah, and stands on the grounds of the original Cherokee Female Seminary, which was burned in 1887. The only surviving architecture from the fire are the school’s columns which stand in front of the Center. The school was rebuilt in 1909 in another part of Tahlequah, and is still going today as Northeastern State University. Inside the Heritage Center is the Trail of Tears exhibit and a genealogy center, but equally compelling is what is outside. An ancient Cherokee village has been recreated, and guides demonstrate life of the times. The Cherokee didn’t live in teepees, but in homes made of “waddle and daub” (mud and sticks). An interesting twist for the times — women owned all the property inside the home, and to divorce a man, she simply placed his belongings outside. Would that it were so easy today!

A

cross from the Cherokee Heritage Center is the 100-year old Park Hill/ Owen Community Center, which was a school until 1972. The historic building is now used for events, and we enjoyed a special traditional Cherokee lunch there. A staple of Cherokee traditional food is called “The Three Sisters” - corn, beans and squash. Also on their menu you will find fried pork, grape dumplings, wild onions, hickory nut meat cooked with rice, and pokeberry (a fruit commonly grown in the area that has to be cooked down as it is toxic in its raw state).

A

nother historic home to visit is the George M. Murrell Home. Murrell moved with his Cherokee wife (and relative of Chief John Ross) during the voluntary tribe removal in the 1830s. He built a plantation style home which is rich with history of life in the mid-1800s.

P

erhaps the most famous member of the Cherokee Nation would be the beloved Will Rogers. “Oklahoma’s Favorite Son” was born in 1879 in Oologah (pronounced oo’-la-gawh) at the Dog Iron Ranch, 30 minutes northeast of Tulsa. The ranch home dates back to 1838, and is now a living history ranch with horses, cattle, sheep, and more, open daily to visitors. Will was known as the “Cowboy Indian”, being part-Cherokee (descended from a Cherokee chief). He liked to say, “My ancestors didn’t come over on the Mayflower, but they met the boat.” Will first gained fame from being a champion bronc rider and roper, but his winning personality brought him further fame as a movie star, comedian and writer who traveled all over the world. His most famous quote is “I never met a man I didn’t like.” He tragically died in a plane crash in Alaska in 1935 at the age of 56. Our visit to Dog Iron Ranch happily coincided with Will’s 131st Birthday Celebration, so in addition to visiting the home, we were treated to entertainment by expert roper Kowboy Kal, and the local school children. Andy Hogan, a Will Rogers’ interpreter answered all our questions about Will’s life. Also in attendance were Miss Cherokee, Brooke Hudson, and some of Will’s relatives and fellow actors. Will Rogers was so famous and led such an interesting life that a special museum, aptly named The Will Rogers Museum, was built to house his memorabilia. He is also interred there. Built in 1938 and remodeled in the 90s, the Will Rogers Museum is located on 20 beautiful acres (purchased by Will himself in 1911) in nearby Claremore, and has nine galleries, three theaters, interactive TV, and a special children’s museum. The birthday party spilled over to the museum, with many of the towns VIPs there to celebrate.

F

or a delightful afternoon repast we stopped in at Claremore’s historic Belvidere Mansion Tea Room — a 1902 three-story Victorian home that now serves as lovely spot for lunch or afternoon tea, and is owned and run by the Rogers County Historical Society.

W

here better than Oklahoma to find the largest private gun collection in the world? The J.M. David Arms and Historical Museum is also located in Claremore, and contains 13,000 firearms, 50,000 artifacts including saddles, spurs, local ranching brands, German beer steins, World War I posters, military weapons, John Rogers statuary, and Native American artifacts. As astonishing a collection as it is, remarkably, 95% was owned by J.M. Davis himself. Mr. Davis was a hotelier who displayed his gun collection on the wall of his lobby, which in 1929 numbered 99. The other artifacts he collected were also displayed throughout his hotel. Word of his collection spread, and folks came from all over to buy and sell or trade. He became known as a gun expert, spending around $3000 a month on guns and artifacts. Eventually, his memorabilia became too massive for his hotel, and he transferred ownership of the collection to the State of Oklahoma, with the state agreeing to build and maintain a facility to house the collection. The building was begun in 1969 and now has over 40,000 square feet of space.

A

nother connection to the Dawes Rolls is Thomas Gilcrease, who was part Creek, and came from Louisiana to Tulsa to acquire land. His land fortuitously was located on an oilfield, which gave him sufficient income to travel extensively collecting valuable art objects. The Gilcrease Museum was built in 1949, and is known as “The Smithsonian of the American West”. The priceless collection has over 10,000 paintings, Native American art and artifacts, 100,000 rare books, historical manuscripts, documents and maps. The museum is surrounded by beautiful gardens on 23 of its 460 acres in Tulsa.

ince the legendary Route 66 runs through Oklahoma (with its longest drivable stretch), kitschy buffs will appreciate some of the so-bad-it’sgood attractions found along the way. The Blue Whale of Catoosa was an old swimming hole back in the day, and now it’s just a memory, but still a fun place for picnics. The Route 66 Nut House in Claremore is a rustic log cabin made from pecan logs, and they offer a variety of pecans, nuts and specialize in an eclectic — and delicious — selection of homemade fudge.

W

e stayed at the new Tulsa Hard Rock Hotel/Casino and enjoyed a comfy bed, good food and a wee bit of gambling during our trip. The hotel has 350 rooms, five restaurants (The Wild Potato Buffet and Toby Keith’s “I Love this Bar & Grill” were particular favorites of ours), nightclubs, a large casino with state-of-the-art slots, and a 2,700-seat concert venue. For golfers, there is also the beautiful Cherokee Hills Golf Course available to guests. Oh, and of course the fabulous $2 M rock ‘n roll memorabilia collection Hard Rocks are famous for, spread throughout the hotel. They have a particularly heavy collection of Jimi Hendrix (my fave) artifacts.

LookinÕGood . . . Ladies... Hate Pumping Gas?

I

f you were driving in the 1960s, you may nostalgically remember when you could pull up to a gas station and someone would come out and fill your tank, check your oil, wash off your windshield, all while you sat prettily in the driver’s seat. That all went away in the 80s (except for those lucky gals who live in NJ), and now we are left to schlep it ourselves, all while getting nasty gas, grease, grime and germs on our hands — especially annoying when you’re all dressed up. Pump Gloves to the rescue! There is a new line of stylish and protective gloves to keep a woman’s hands safe from the “Gunk at the Gas Pump.” With less mess at the pump we can feel confident and clean on our way to work, school, or to pick up the kids. Keep them handily (no pun intended) in the glove compartment. Each pair comes with a vinyl carrying case for storing when not in use. They are made from nylon spandex for a formed fit, and are completely machine washable. One size fits all, and as an added perk, they can also be used exclusively as driving gloves which offer UV protection from the sun’s harsh rays. For more information, visit www.pumpgloves.com

The Mob Is Back In Vegas The Mob Has Taken Over Tropicana Las Vegas! photos by Melissa Wolcott Martino

T

he new Las Vegas Mob Experience is an immersive, highly interactive journey through the history of organized crime and the impact its major players had on the building of Las Vegas. Anchored by the largest collection of authentic artifacts, memorabilia, photos and videos of organized crime ever assembled, the attraction immerses its guests in the story of the rise and fall of the “Mob” as it chronicles the lives of the men who ran Sin City for three decades. The attraction uses a wide variety of technologies in order to enhance its collection. The interactive portion of the Experience allows visitors to determine their “final fate.” As you move through the attraction, you are required to make decisions and act upon them. If you don’t get the outcome you are hoping for, you can journey through multiple times in order to experience a number of different outcomes. Live character actors and apparitions of various celebrity gangster guides including James Caan, Mickey Rourke, Steve Schirripa, Frank Vincent and Tony Sirico, help you find your way through the exhibits. Through these first person accountings, visitors are able to experience the world of organized crime and learn about the role its major players had on the building of Las Vegas, and their eventual eradication from the casinos. The Las Vegas Mob Experience captures a lost era, chronicles Las Vegas’ early years and tells the stories of the real men behind the myths. The Las Vegas Mob Experience neither glorifies nor vilifies the Mob, it presents a historically accurate view of them. The attraction is open daily from 10:00am-10:00pm at the Tropicana. The Tropicana Las Vegas has undergone a major transformation. The South Beach inspired changes to the resort include a fresh redesign of every hotel room and suite, the casino, the conference center and exhibition hall, several new restaurants, bars, a new poker room, a new race and sports book, a new spa and fitness center, and the popular Nikki Beach Night Club and Beach Club. For additional information call 702-739-2222 or visit www.troplv.com.

ampa’s own Debra Weisser invented Hem-Eze in 2008, working out of her home. She had the product patented and trademarked. Debra invented Hem-Eze out of necessity; she needed a convenient, quick, and easy way to put a temporary hem on a pair of pants. In this fast-paced world, sometimes sewing just doesn’t fit in. You don’t have to sew to use this product. Flexibility and versatility, that’s what today’s fashionistas want. Hem-Eze uses a specially formulated double sided strip, and is safe enough to use on delicate fabrics like cotton and silks, while strong enough to withstand heavier and coarser fabrics like denim and corduroy. It places an actual crease in the fabric that yields a professional hemmed look. Hem-Eze has been featured on the Today Show with Bobbie Thomas and on the NBC 15 Morning Show “Hot Trends”. It was also selected by RealSimple.Com magazine as one of their six Problem Solvers. Real Simple.com says, “End the battle between keeping your pants long to wear heels and short to wear with flats. Place Hem-Eze double-sided tape on the inside of each pant bottom. Then, when the occasion calls for stilettos, remove the tape and release the hem.” Their slogan is “Wear High Heels this morning and Sandals tonight… with HemEze.” Visit www.Hem-Eze.com for more information.

ROCKERS AND ROLLERS: FULL-THROTTLE MEMOIR

A

SEASONED: A CHEF’S WITH HER CAPTAIN

by Brian Johnson

by Victoria Allman

B

V

y night, Brian Johnson sings in the biggest rock ’n’ roll band on the planet. But by day, AC/ DC’s frontman drives balls to the wall. Cars and rock ’n’ roll — they were made for each other. When he was a young boy growing up in a working-class English town, Brian developed what would become a lifelong passion for cars, trolling junkyards and even pretending to drive the family car. From there, he steamed up the windows of his old Mini Cooper as a teenager, spent untold time in hygienically challenged tour buses with helpful signs such as No Shitting Allowed. Shagging Expected, was chauffeured in leather-trimmed limos, and raced cars to a checkered flag. Featuring guest stars Cliff Williams, Malcolm and Angus Young, and many, many others, even Arnold Schwarzenegger, Rockers and Rollers is a tribute to Brian’s obsession with four wheels. By turns surprising, poignant, funny, and maybe a little bit bawdy, these are the stories of a man who drives as hard as he rocks. In 2003 Brian Johnson was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, along with the other members of the band. He lives in Sarasota, FL. www.youritlist.com

HITLER’S MASTER OF THE DARK ARTS: Himmler’s Black Knights and the Occult Origins of the SS by Bill Yenne www.zenithpress.com Hitler’s Nazi Party, at its evil roots, embraced a bizarre interpretation of ancient European paganism, blending it with fragments of other traditions from sources as diverse as tenth-century Saxon warlords, nineteenthcentury spiritualism, and earlytwentieth-century fringe archeology. Even the swastika, the hated symbol of Nazism, had its roots in ancient symbolism, its first recorded appearance carved into a mammoth tusk twelve thousand years before Hitler came to power. At the heart of the evil was Hitler’s “witch doctor,” Heinrich Himmler, and his stranger-than-fiction cult, the deadly SS. Hitler’s Master of the Dark Arts is the first history of the SS and its leader to focus on the mystical cult aspects of the organization. It follows Himmler’s transformation of the SS from a few hundred members in 1929 to over fifty thousand black-uniformed Aryans by the mid-1930s. Concurrent with its expansion and its eventual independence from the brown shirts of the SA, Himmler infused the Black Knights with a mishmash of occult beliefs and lunatic-fringe theories that were used to justify the Final Solution.
