CENTRAL FLORIDA’S SYRUP 2ND ANNUAL RAISING CANE TASTING CONTEST & CANE GRINDING - Jan 14 The Pioneer Florida Museum is set up with a complete Cane Syrup Mill with hard working mule. Demonstrations of cane grinding and syrup making will be presented during this event. Sugarcane was a Pioneer Florida cash crop and was harvested mostly by hand and sometimes mechanically. Hand harvesting still accounts for more than half of the world’s production. Harvesters use cane knives or machetes, cut the standing cane just above the ground. Early development of cane grinding in Florida was done with a mule or horse. Later, mechanical harvesting, a sugarcane combine (or chopper harvester) was used. The machine cuts the cane at the base of the stalk, separates the cane from its leaves, and deposits the cane into a haulout transporter while blowing the thrash back onto the field. A modern machines can harvest 100 tons of cane each hour, but cane harvested using earlier machines had to be transported to the processing plant rapidly. Once cut, sugarcane begins to lose its sugar content, and damage inflicted on the cane during mechanical harvesting accelerates this decay. Travel through some of Florida’s early 20th century history at the Pioneer Florida Museum. Glimpse life as it was long ago by visiting buildings assembled from all over Florida. See a two-story house built in 1860, visit a one-room schoolhouse or test the hard pews of the 1905 Enterprise Methodist Church. All the buildings were donated and moved to this rolling hillside, 20 miles east of the Green Swamp. The buildings were restored and furnished with items from the era in which they were built. The main building includes displays of dolls dressed like the wives of Florida governors, antique dentist’s and doctor’s offices, old typewriters and appliances and a small store that sells replicas of old-time toys, candy and clothing. HAIRSPRAY - Jan 6 - Feb 26

This is a Show Palace premiere. Hairspray delighted audiences by sweeping them away to 1960’s Baltimore, where the 50’s are out -- and change is in the air. Loveable plus-size heroine, Tracy Turnblad, has a passion for dancing, and wins a spot on the local TV dance program, “The Corny Collins Show.” Overnight she finds herself transformed from outsider to teen celebrity. Can a larger-than-life adolescent manage to vanquish the program’s reigning princess, integrate the television show, and find true love (singing and dancing all the while, of course!) without mussing her hair? Join the Show Palace for this big, fat musical comedy hit!

“Two thirds rhythm and one third soul.” That’s how Fats Waller defined the uniquely American form of popular music and dance known as “swing.” Requiring only joyful enthusiasm and a ready partner, swing exploded out of pre-war Harlem’s hotbed of youth culture and swept the world. It shattered ethnic and cultural barriers, generating specialty styles such as Jive, Swing, Lindy Hop, West Coast Swing, and Hip-Hop Swing. Swing! celebrates this remarkable diversity to the beat of the most exhilarating songs of the period.

S T R E C N O C T O H MAHAFFEY THEATER Bill Edwards Presents THE O’JAYS - Jan 12 The O’Jays are living legends. American treasures. The term “living legend” is often overused and abused, but with The O’Jays, there’s little argument that the honorable tag truly applies. With their place in modern music secure, The O’Jays could have cruise-controlled to that comfy hammock on a sandy beach, umbrella-decorated drinks in hand. Why? (1) An ocean-wide body of work that spawned 24 Top Ten smashes and 59 total charted songs. (2) Incredibly energetic and dynamic liveshows. (3) Mad respect for their Olympian vocals. (4) Their social and political impact on generations and nations. But doing things slowly is not Eddie Levert, Sr., Walter Williams, Sr. and Eric Nolan Grant’s modus operandi. After 50+ years making such international hits as “Back Stabbers,” “For The Love Of Money,” “Darlin’ Darlin’ Baby,” “Love Train,” “I Love Music,” “Use Ta Be My Girl”and “Have You Had Your Love Today,” The O’Jays are light years away from easing up on the gas. And like fine wine, The O’Jays just get better with time.

ROBERTA FLACK - Jan 29 Internationally hailed as one of the greatest songstresses of our time, Grammy Award winning Roberta Flack remains unparalleled in her ability to tell a story through her music. Her songs bring insight into our lives, loves, culture and politics, while effortlessly traversing a broad musical landscape from pop to soul to folk to jazz.

STRAZ CENTER MARSHA AMBROSIUS - Jan 12 Already proven as a talented, sought after songwriter and revered platinum-selling artist, Marsha Ambrosius is meeting the next challenge in her already impressive musical career by reinventing herself as a solo artist with her J Records debut disc Late Nights & Early Mornings. Late Nights & Early Mornings is destined to be a classic, as Ambrosius offers a candid glimpse of her life and perspectives as a woman. Inspired by musical icons like Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder and Prince, she concedes there is an overall male influence in her songwriting, such as the assertive sentiments heard on hits like “Say Yes.” She explains, “My pen and my point of view has a certain aggression to it because I’ve listened to a lot of male influenced music, which I think makes me one of the most outspoken writers out here. Sometimes as a woman you don’t wanna say what’s on your mind for fear of being judged. But why wouldn’t I say it like that if that’s how I felt?” Musical peers recruited to contribute to the project include Alicia Keys, a reunion with Dre and Vidal (producers of “Say Yes”), Just Blaze and Focus. But to revolutionary music group Black Violin, they’re nothing but ingredients. Combining a daunting array of musical styles and influences to produce a signature sound, this group of two classically trained violinists and their DJ is redefining the music world-one string at a time. With influences ranging from Shostakovich and Bach to Nas and Jay-Z, Black Violin breaks all the rules, blending the classical with the modern to create something rare-a sound that nobody has ever heard, but that everybody wants to feel. In an age where music is coming to be more and more defined by the labels given to it, Black Violin shows that music does not exist within a box, but rather exists in another space – one as open and unrestrained as the minds that produce it. Tasty Food and Drinks! RED LOBSTER

A Shiny New Old Friend by Melissa Wolcott Martino

S

ometimes, when an old favorite restaurant has been around for a long time, people drift to the “new guy on the block” to check it out. Red Lobster is an old favorite, but also now the “new guy.” With it’s newly redesigned restaurant and menu, it’s time to check in and rediscover your “new” old favorite Red Lobster at 6151 34th Street North, St Petersburg. Red Lobster was founded in Lakeland by restauranteur Bill Darden in1968. Today there are over 680 locations across the US and Canada, with 17 in the Tampa Bay area — all company owned, no franchises. As time went on, the Darden group of restaurants grew to include the Olive Garden, Bahama Breeze, Longhorn Steakhouse, Capitol Grill, and Season’s 52 — all area favorites. The 34th Street Red Lobster (#19 in the chain) has been at the same spot now for 42 years, but the location is the only thing old about the restaurant. The redesigned interior and updated menu provide a welcome dining experience. What’s new? The nostalgic coastal decor reminiscent of Bar Harbor, Maine is the perfect setting for the new fresh seafood menu. Warm wood tones and wedgewood blue accents, cozy

lighting, beautiful Maine photographs along with mariner flags adorning the walls, and comfortable booths get you in the mood for the delicious meal to come. The restaurant has a wood-fire grill, manned by certified Grill Masters as they sear fresh fish, Maine Lobster, shellfish and steaks. You may not realize it, but it is Red Lobster that introduced America to new seafood species like Maine lobster, snow crab, jumbo shrimp and tilapia. Popcorn Shrimp? Yep, Red Lobster. Maine lobster is flown in every night, and all the salmon is fresh from Norway. The fresh fish menu is updated daily. Chef’s specials change seasonally, and the chef comes up with delicious recipes that best suit the seafood selection of the time.

Some of the newer items on the lunch and dinner menu are the creamy Lobster Bisque soup; Hand-

Battered Fish and Chips served with tarter sauce and malt vinegar; Pecan-Crusted Jumbo Shrimp with a maple-cherry glaze served over wild rice pilaf; Parmesan-Crusted Tilapia served with fresh broccoli; and Maple-Glazed Salmon and Shrimp served over wild rice pilaf. Entrees come with a choice of sides. The ultimate feast is called —oddly enough — the Ultimate Feast, and includes a tender split Maine lobster tail, steamed snow crab legs, garlic shrimp scampi and Walt’s Favorite Shrimp. You can also create you own feast from a variety of succulent seafood choices. The “Quick Catches” lunch menu was designed for guests with

no worries about not finding your favorite comfort food! And don’t forget to leave room for the oh-so good decadent Warm Chocolate

Chip Lava Cookie — a warm thick chocolate chip cooke with a molten chocolate center, topped with vanilla ice cream and drizzled with chocolate sauce.

busy schedules. Prices start at only $6.99 for items such as Crispy Beer-Battered Shrimp served with freshly cooked potato chips and remoulade sauce. Try the New England Lobster Rolls, with chilled Maine lobster lightly tossed with creamy mayo, celery and onion on buttery toasted rolls, served with potato chips for $11.99. Non-seafood eaters will also have a tasty selection of menu items to choose from, with interesting steak and chicken recipes. Red Lobster also has allergen menu information for those with food sensitivity, and offers a healthier children’s menu. Some things should never be tampered with, and here it would be Red Lobster’s famous and fabulous Cheddar Bay Biscuits. So, www.AccentOnTampaBay.com www.AccentOnTampaBay.com

What’s not new is the high level of friendly and knowledgeable service guests receive at Red Lobster. The “VIP” service you receive is above the level you would expect from such a

reasonably priced restaurant. If you’re in a hurry but want a tasty meal, the restaurant offers take-out service. To really be “in the loop” you should join Red Lobster’s “Fresh Catch Club” to receive discounts and specials notices. For more information visit Red Lobster’s website at www.RedLobster.com

TEQUILA AVION - Smooth and Flavorful

I

ntroduced early this year, Florida has welcomed Tequila Avión and its Silver, Reposado and Añejo varietals in a big way. Said Janet Fagnan, President of Tequila Avion LLC, “Demand for Tequila Avión has exceeded all expectations and initial projections. Florida is a critical market since it is the third highest state in tequila consumption and has a dynamic, multi-cultural and vibrant social scene.” Initial distribution included select bars, clubs, restaurants, hotels and retailers throughout the state. The great taste and smoothness of Avión makes this product extremely successful in Florida as it has been in all its other markets. What distinguishes Tequila Avión is its combination of ultra premium quality, flavor and unmatched smoothness at a price tag well below what you would expect for a product this good. The production of this smooth tequila begins high in the hills of Jalisco, 7000 feet above sea level, where the finest handpicked Blue Weber Agave slow roasts in brick ovens to bring out a blend of natural flavors and aromas. Before it’s bottled, Tequila Avión is stroked ten times longer than other tequilas. The proprietary Ultra Slow Filtration process filters Tequila Avión into smooth Silver, Reposado and Añejo varietals. The result is a flavor profile and smoothness loved by everyone who tastes, including the judges at the 2011 San Francisco World Spirits Competition who honored Avion with Double Gold distinction. Whether you sip it, mix it or enjoy it straight up, Tequila Avion should appeal to everyone. For further information, and some seaonal recipes, please visit www.TequilaAvion.com

Mo’Ziki

Give Me Mo! by Melissa Wolcott Martino

brand new dining concept has cropped up in Largo featuring delicious Greek cuisine. I hate to call it a fast food restaurant— A which carries a connotation of being lower quality—but you do get

your food very quickly, you do order from a counter, and the price is right. Other than that, the quality you receive is the same as any fine food restaurant, with healthy fresh ingredients and tasty recipes. Mo’Ziki’s name is derived from the tzatziki sauce commonly used with the Greek gyro sandwich, with the “mo” meaning “more” in a neighborhood vernacular. The clever concept was the brainchild of two Tampa Bay old friends and experienced consultants/ restauranteurs, Geoff Brown and Josh Bowles. The 64-seat Largo location is the first of what will hopefully lead to many franchises. Mo’Ziki’s menu is not extensive, but it includes the most popular Greek sandwich and salad fixings. The best part of this dining experience is that you design your own meal. With a spread of fresh meats and vegetables, you can order up your own tasty dish. You start the process by selecting a base such as pita, wrap, bowl, salad, etc. Then you decide on gyro, chicken, steak, hot veggies, and hummus, and pick from some fifteen fresh veggies and cheeses. Top it off with a choice of six unique homemade ‘ziki sauces or four dressings, and you’ve got one memorable dish. There is also a children’s menu, and assorted fountain and bottled drinks including domestic and imported beer. Mo’Ziki’s average meal price is $8.50 per person. Lunch and dinner are served seven days a week, from 11am to 9pm, with the exception of major holidays. Catering and take-out are available. The restaurant is located at 10801 Starkey Rd., Largo, FL, 33777; phone 727-397-8300. Visit online for more information, www.eatmoziki.com Mo’ good, mo’ better, Mo’Ziki!

ANCIENT EGYPT—ART AND MAGIC:

Treasures From The Fondation Gandur Pour L’Art through April 29

This landmark exhibition brings to life one of the greatest civilizations in the history of the world. Ancient Egypt—Art and Magic: Treasures from the Fondation Gandur pour l’Art, currently on view through April 29, spotlights astonishing objects of every kind. Mummy cases and sacred works in diverse media, tomb and temple reliefs, papyrus fragments, alabaster vessels, and rare objects comprised of precious stones make this one of the most dramatic shows ever presented at the MFA. The 100 works demonstrate the genius of

ancient craftsmen, and the magical or spiritual qualities of the objects are revealed at every turn. The internationally respected Egyptologist Dr. Robert Steven Bianchi is the guest curator. A magnificent red granite torso of Rameses the Great honors one of the most celebrated pharaohs in history. A large stele, or funerary marker, commemorates his son Rameses III. Other key works include a tomb relief of the nobleman Nefer-Hotep, a relief from the Amarna Period from a temple erected during the reign of the Pharaoh Akhenaten and his wife Nefertiti, and a fragment from a temple relief paying tribute to Alexander the Great. A limestone sphinx is similarly impressive. The sphinx, with the head of a pharaoh and the body of a lion, points to the profound interrelationship of humans and nature in ancient Egypt. The natural world was not something apart for the Egyptians, and neither were the deities, who could take the form of animals and natural forces such as the sun. Ancient Egyptian art centers on transformation, renewal, and eternal life. These objects were invested with visual and symbolic power. Hieroglyphics, the ancient Egyptian

written language, were, by themselves, a high form of artistic expression. The mummy cases or sarcophagi are the largest works in the exhibition. One is covered in colorful images—like a brilliant painting—and was designed to honor the status of an unidentified court official and to assure his eternal life. Another, more than six-and-a-half-feet tall, includes inlays of alabaster or limestone, as well as hieroglyphics, and has a monumental presence asserting the authority of a certain Hor-Em-Akhet. THE MAGIC OF ANCIENT EGYPTIAN ART Magic and spirituality infused every aspect of Egyptian art. Instead of providing a chronological survey, Dr. Bianchi has emphasized the objects’ sacred qualities. Priests accompanied the workers to gather natural materials and conducted specific rituals upon entering and leaving the quarries.

According to Dr. Bianchi, “for the ancient Egyptians, all stones were considered to be a privileging material, because they symbolized eternity, permanence, immutability, and incorruptibility… Any object created in stone or any text inscribed into stone remained intact and immune to the agents of time. Stone, possessed of a vital energy, was alive.” Statues of gods and pharaohs possessed their animating spirit. In antiquity, expeditions to the Red Land—the desert, a place of chaos, evil, and demons—were ordered by pharaoh. The materials were returned to the Black Land— named for the rich silt deposited by the Nile—where the ancient Egyptians lived and thrived. Craftsmen then converted these raw materials into fascinating and timeless objects representing cosmic order. The Black Land was the world of civilization, and the color black signified rebirth. These objects always had an elevated purpose and meaning, but they can be appreciated for their sheer beauty alone. Upcoming Exhibits NO LIMITS: JANET BIGGS - thru January 8 For almost fifteen years, Biggs has been an important figure in the world of video art. Her work has been featured in over 100 solo and group exhibitions around the world

and is widely collected by institutions and individuals. Janet Biggs has explored the tense relationships between athleticism and human ambition, individualism and community, and free will and control. Her work has focused on sports and natural environments and has ranged from the claustrophobic pool with synchronized swimmers to the vast expanse of the High Arctic. WORLDS APART: MYTH & HISTORY, GODS & MORTALS, HEROES & HYBRIDS - thru Feb 5 Worlds Apart explores the many intersecting spheres of the world of classical antiquity, in particular those of myth and history, gods and mortals, heroes and hybrids. For rather than a single, discrete time and place, classical antiquity might be better described as a series of diverse and intersecting spheres—worlds apart from our own but also from one another. During the period covered in this exhibition, from about 2500 B.C. to A.D. 500, the vast

areas of the Mediterranean Sea and surrounding lands were believed to have witnessed countless episodes, some verified by archaeology and historic accounts, others now considered wholly legendary. In this exhibition, objects have been grouped so as to accentuate both similarities and differences between myth and history, gods and mortals, heroes and hybrids. REALISM: SELECTIONS FROM THE MARTIN Z. MARGULIES COLLECTION - thru March 4 In the second exhibition drawn upon the partnership between the Tampa Museum of Art and the Martin Z. Margulies Collection in Miami, Realism provides a compelling view of the realist tendencies in the visual arts of the last 30 years. Juxtaposing stellar examples of the PhotoRealist movement in painting with a selection of sculptural installations by leading contemporary artists who push the boundaries of what constitutes realism in our highly charged environment, the exhibition includes artists such as William Beckman, Davis Cone, Leandro Erlich, Tony Oursler, and William Ryman. ROMARE BEARDEN: SOUTHERN RECOLLECTIONS Jan 28 - May 6 Romare Bearden: Southern Recollections is an exhibition of approximately 70 works of art that span the career of this internationally renowned artist. Bearden (1911-1988) is widely regarded as one of the most important African-American artists who worked in the United States during the 20th century. The exhibition examines how the South served as a source of inspiration throughout his career. Through visual recollections of his experiences in the South, Bearden meticulously recorded the ritual forms, or the “collective beliefs,” that imbue his works with archetypal significance. The works in his Southern Series, painted in tempera on brown paper, are characterized by strong colors, flattened perspective and stylized, highly formal compositions. In the mid-1960s, his use of collage, which emphasizes distortions, reversals, telescoping of time, and Surrealistic blending of styles enabled Bearden to convey the dream-like quality of memory and active imagination and was therefore a perfect vehicle for images of his memories of the South. Magnificent Miniatures

37th Annual International Miniature Art Society Exhibition Don’t miss the Miniature Art Society of Florida exhibit at the Dunedin Fine Art Center from January 15 through February 5. You will experience a spectacular display of miniature art – not only paintings but scrimshaw, fired porcelain, and sculpture – including works created by some of the world’s finest miniature artists, and the art is for sale. Nearly 800 works of art will be shown, from 248 artists, in addition to the society’s permanent collection of more than 100 miniature works. Most of the artists create under magnification, using a variety of mediums and methods and the tiniest of brushes for paintings. Magnifying glasses are available for the complete enjoyment of the small treasures. Entries from 35 states and 9 countries provide a wonderful diversity of subject matter and framing techniques. Of approximately 1000 works of art submitted for entry in the show, a jury of award-winning miniaturists carefully selected only the very finest for display. Throughout the show, visitors may talk to and observe artists at work. These artists will demonstrate their styles and techniques, whether oil painting or scrimshaw, pencil drawings or fired porcelain. Demonstrators include local Florida artists as well as national and international artists who travel to the show each year. Awards and a slide show of the award winners will be presented at an Awards Brunch on January 15. Best of Show by Lynn Ponto-Peterson 3” X 3” Painting is shown at actual size Honorable Mention in Landscape – Charlie Tweed, Ft. Myers, “Fall Festival Of Color”. Miniature art is based on small scale, detail and techniques handed down from as far back as one thousand years ago. America’s “golden age” of portrait miniature (about 1740-1850) came to an abrupt halt with the advent of photography in the mid 1800s. But the love of creating art ‘in little’ did not die. A resurgence of interest occured in the early 20th century – The Revival Period – and we continue to carry on in that tradition. MASF was founded in 1974 with this heritage in mind. The goal is to assure that original art in small scale, with great emphasis on quality, remains a respected genre in the Fine Arts. The show is held at the Dunedin Fine Art Center, 1143 Michigan Blvd., Dunedin, Florida. 727-298-3322; www.miniatureartsocietyofflorida.com

y birthday month is January so I think there is no better time to highlight those items that make great birthday gifts-jewels and gemstones. For those of you who are shopping for your favorite appraiser or someone who is really special in your life, here are some tips that will help you get the most for your money. When it comes to colored gemstones, color has the greatest impact on value. Generally, the most valuable colored gemstones are those with a medium to medium dark tone. Nine times out of ten, pure gemstones or those with no enhancements, hold a higher value than others. A gemstone’s clarity is determined by its natural environment. For instance, emeralds almost always form in nature with inclusions that are visible to the naked eye and conversely, aquamarines do not. While clarity relates to value, inclusions are like birthmarks on a gemstone showing its individuality, not its flaws. Still, inclusions impact the look of a gemstone and its value. Carat weight is the standard unit of weight for most gemstones and the per-carat price will increase as size increases. Birthstones hold special meaning and symbolism. Based on the zodiac, the original birthstone calendar was created by the ancients who believed that gems possessed mystical powers. The stones were said to bestow good health, prosperity, and protection. Gemstones were associated with the months of the year and later, in 1912, the American Association of Jewelers adopted a list of birthstones. The ruby (July’s birthstone) is one of history’s most popular gems and known as the King of the Gems. From the Latin word ‘ruber’ meaning red, the ruby is mentioned in the Bible as

one of the gems used to represent one of the twelve tribes of Israel. It is a hard gemstone and comes from the mineral species corundum; related to the sapphire. Rubies rarely occur in sizes over a carat, so a large ruby will always come with a very high price tag. While sapphires come in almost every color of the rainbow (e.g., we call red sapphires rubies), blue is the most common color associated with the gem. Sapphires or ‘safir’ stones are hard and durable and may be fac-

Be careful as amethysts may fade so avoid prolonged exposure to bring light. With a hardness of 7.0 on the Mohs hardness scale, garnets (January’s birthstone) are found in many places around the globe including Kenya, Brazil, Madagascar, Germany, Russia, United States, etc. Deep red garnets, popular in the early 1900s, were named Ruby ring with diamond accents. for the deep red pomegranate fruit. performs his original music score of the silent film A Story of Floating Weeds by Yasujiro Ozu (1934, black & white), which is projected for the audience to watch. Among Ozu’s most successful films portrays “floating weeds drifting down the leisurely river of our lives,” which has long been a favored metaphor in Japanese poetry, and is the theme for a group of traveling actors who seem to be drifting aimlessly, carried by currents beyond their control. A Story of Floating Weeds is 85 minutes in length and does not have an intermission. In 2006, Alex de Grassi was commissioned by the New York Guitar Festival to compose and perform the music for the film. ig Cat Rescue is the world’s largest sanctuary for big cats who have been abused, abandoned, retired from performing acts, or saved from being slaughtered for fur coats. The sanctuary houses tigers, lions, leopards, cougars, bobcats, lynx, ocelots, servals, caracals and others — a total of 16 of the 35 species of wild cat, many of whom are threatened, endangered, or now extinct in the wild. At this home for rare and exotic cats, The narrow mission of Big Cat Rescue is to provide the best permanent home they can for these cats. The broader mission of the sanctuary is to reduce the number of cats that suffer the fate of abandonment and/or abuse and to encourage preservation of habitat and wildlife. People are urged to behave in a way that will support these goals by teaching people about the plight of the cats, both in the wild and in captivity. This is accomplished through guided tours, educational programs for young people, and by maintaining a website that is a great resource for information about exotic cats. Big Cat Rescue has built enclosures in a very natural habitat with foliage and shelter on a 45 acre site, and provides the best nutritional and medical care possible. They have conditioning and enrichment programs to provide for the cats physical and psychological well being. The sanctuary is supported entirely by donation. Big Cat Rescue is located at 12802 Easy Street, Tampa. Call 813-920-4130 for more information, or visit BigCatRescue.org.

FUN DOG TOYS From Petprojekt

S

ince their big break into the pet industry, Petprojekt has been pushing the boundaries of ordinary dog toys. Why get a boring squeak toy, when Fido can be chewing on a surprisingly realistic T-Bone steak? If your pup isn’t into the novelty foods, then their newest line of toys might be right up their alley. The Bonbal is a 2-in-1 toy that is twice the entertainment for dogs! The bright, bouncy ball, made from durable, 100% natural rubber, has ridges that make it extra fun to catch, chew and chomp. Flip the ball inside out and it becomes a rubber bone shaped toy. The Cozmo is a dog toy with long, soft, durable spikes that create the perfect toy for bouncing, and make it easy to pick up and throw. Dogs can’t resist chasing after a bouncing asteroid, and owners can’t help but laugh as their dogs jump along. For the pup looking for something a bit more conventional, the Dogbon is just the thing. It’s shaped like a regular bone toy, but is made from 100% synthetic RUBR, a proprietary blend of durable non-toxic synthetic materials that make it bounce and float like a dream. Whether it’s for a water dog that can’t get enough of catch, or the lazy pooch who just wants to sit and chew, the Dogbon is a fresh spin on a classic chew toy. FLUSH PUPPIES

his is great news for the environment, and dog owners everywhere. Flush Puppies doodie bags are specifically made to dispose of doggie doodie down the toilet. They are 100% hyrdo-biodegradable and flushable. Yes, really… flushable. They are made from Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) – a water soluble, eco-friendly, “green” alternative to plastic. Unlike plastic bags or other “biodegradable” bags, Flush Puppies actually biodegrade in water. What you do with the bags is completely up to you — trash ‘em or flush ‘em. But better to flush than to add more to landfills, where your dog’s “business” will likely mummify and may not decompose at all. From the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency: “Pet waste can be a major source of bacteria and excess nutrients in local waters. . . Flushing pet waste is the best disposal method. Leaving pet waste on the ground increases public health risks by allowing harmful bacteria and nutrients to wash into the storm drain and eventually into local waterbodies.” So, there you go. Bag the poop, toss it in the toilet, and flush. Flush Puppies are clean and simple. For more information, visit www.flushpuppies.com.

Move Twice your Gear with Half the Effort

T

he Train Reaction Device allows travelers to quickly connect and roll twice the luggage with half the effort. “Anyone on the road typically struggles with transporting all their clothes, shoes, toiletries and other belongings,” says company founder Jeff Herold. “It always amazes people how a device that costs so little can dramatically reduce the strain of getting bags from one place to the next.” Linking luggage in seconds, the Train Reaction Device creates a stable, balanced, four-wheel unit with a perfect

center of gravity. By using the smaller piece to leverage the larger, or connecting two of the same size, the device produces a weightless effect, allowing users to move their gear with a single hand -- leaving the other free for coffee, a cell phone or holding a child. To eliminate 100 percent of downward and upward force on luggage handles, users simply slip the device over the retractable handle of the smallest wheeled bag and through the riveted handle of the second. The process is completed by attaching the hook to the appropriate crossbar for desired incline, and quickly adjusting it to find the perfect balance point. A third, non-wheeled piece can be placed against the retractable handle. For more information, visit www.trainreaction.com.
