LOCAL FOCUS SUPPORT THE PEDIATRIC CANCER FOUNDATION AND JOIN THE BUCCANEERS IN THE “CUT FOR A CURE” - June 7 The Tampa Bay Buccaneers support the efforts of the Pediatric Cancer Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to funding research to eliminate childhood cancer. The focus of the Pediatric Cancer Foundation is to fund research for less toxic, more targeted therapies with the support of the nation’s leading hospitals. In 2012, the team hosted children and families affected by pediatric cancer at One Buccaneer Place to kick off National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month by dedicating a “Wall of Hope.” A daily reminder of the Buccaneers’ commitment to pediatric cancer research, the “Wall of Hope” was displayed at One Buccaneer Place throughout September of 2012. This year, the team is participating in the “Cut for a Cure Charity Challenge,” a Tampa Bay effort that supports medical research, programming and pediatric care for children and families battling pediatric cancer and blood disorders. On Friday, June 7, General Manager Mark Dominik and prominent members of the Buccaneers will shave their heads at One Buccaneer Place in an effort to not only raise funds for pediatric cancer research, but strengthen our community’s fight against this deadly disease. US Coast Guard Tall Ship Eagle VISITS Port OF ST. PETERSBURG – June 14-16 The Barque Eagle will be traveling to the Caribbean, along the Eastern Seaboard, and to Canada with cadets and officer candidates, teaching them practical seamanship skills while indoctrinating them in the Coast Guard’s afloat leadership laboratory. Built at the Blohm + Voss Shipyard in Hamburg, Germany in 1936, and commissioned as Horst Wessel, Eagle is one of three sail-training ships operated by the pre-World War II German navy. At the close of the war, the ship was taken as a war reparation by the U.S., re-commissioned as the U.S. Coast Guard CutterEagle and sailed to New London, Connecticut, which has been its homeport ever since. Eagle has offered generations of Coast Guard Academy cadets, and more recently officer candidates, an unparalleled leadership experience at sea. In March, Eagle departed New London, Connecticut and the spring officer candidate class sailed to Savannah, Georgia. While in Savannah, the officer candidates had the opportunity to represent the Coast Guard in the annual St. Patrick’s Day parade. The annual cadet summer training deployment departed New London on May 11th, and headed to the Caribbean. Riding the trade winds, Eagle will visit Tortola in the British Virgin Islands and Aruba before turning North. The third class cadets will phase change in St. Petersburg, Florida in mid-June. Eagle will then round the tip of Florida and turn Northeast. Following a port call in Bermuda, Eagle will visit St. Pierre, a French island off the coast of Newfoundland. Sailing Southwest, Eagle will then transit along the coast to Halifax, Canada and Boston, Massachusetts throughout July. In Boston, the third class cadets and their first class cadet division officers will depart and the new swabs and their second class cadre will join the crew. For more information on the port schedule, please visit www.cga.edu/eagle/

Treasures of the Hard Rock Music Memorabilia Exhibit at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tampa - June 14-22 Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tampa will give fans an up-close look at pieces of history from music superstars and legends with the neverbefore-seen “Treasures of the Hard Rock” traveling memorabilia exhibit on June 14-22. The exhibit features iconic items from two one-of-a-kind collections pulled from Hard Rock’s vault, “Gone Too Soon” and“Music Gives Back – Rock ‘N’ Roll Philanthropy.” “We have spent nearly two years scouring our 77,000 piece collection to pull together this exclusive music memorabilia showcase that will wow our guests,” said Jeff Nolan, Hard Rock historian and tour curator. “Fans won’t want to miss this rare glimpse into entertainment history and opportunity to get close to some of the most iconic personal items from music’s renowned performers.” Nolan is responsible for generating music and memorabilia-related content for the Hard Rock brand’s online programs, as well as serving as a consultant regarding valuation and preservation of memorabilia items. He began as a Hard Rock employee in the tour department at Hard Rock Cafe Orlando which serves as the template for a company-wide “Vibe Host” department. He’s now responsible for travelling with Hard Rock’s “Treasures of the Hard Rock” memorabilia exhibit across the country, providing insight and storytelling for the top pieces selected from Hard Rock’s priceless 77,000+ memorabilia collection. “Gone Too Soon” pays tribute to music icons whose lives and careers were tragically cut short. It features items from contemporary talent such as an outfit worn by Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes during TLC’s CrazySexyCool tour and an 8th grade yearbook from Kurt Cobain to artifacts from legends of the past like Elvis Presley’s custom-made karate gi uniform and the unique Guild 12-string acoustic guitar Bob Marley used to record “Is This Love.” Hard Rock’s “Love All, Serve All” mantra was the inspiration for “Music Gives Back – Rock ‘N’ Roll Philanthropy.” This collection focuses on artists who have worked with the brand on various charitable campaigns throughout its more than 40 years. The exhibit features items including Elton John’s sequined “Uncle Sam” outfit, a purple silk shirt worn onstage by Jimi Hendrix and John Lennon’s iconic round glasses. HISTORY IS RELIVED ON THE S.S. AMERICAN VICTORY
W
e thoroughly enjoyed our experience aboard the S.S. American Victory’s “Relive History” cruise recently. The ship was built in 1945 and served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam, and is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is one of only four operational merchant vessels in the U.S. today, and their mission is to honor the men and women who serve our country. The ship provides daily educational tours and serves as a training facility for active and reserve military, firefighters and law enforcement officers. Twice a year, the public is invited to enjoy a sailing of the ship. The fee goes toward the maintaining of this national moving monument. On our sailing were a lot of youth groups and young reenactors, as well as retired military folks from all the branches of the service. The American Victory Ship is docked behind the Florida Aquarium in Tampa. For more information on the ship, visit www. americanvictory.org‑ For more photos of this event, please visit

SPECIAL EVENTS at TAMPA THEATRE SCIENCE ON SCREEN presents EMPIRE OF THE ANTS - 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 13 As part of its popular Science on Screen series, the historic Tampa Theatre will present EMPIRE OF THE ANTS. Along with the film, ant expert Deby Cassill, an associate professor of biology at the University of South Florida, will give a brief presentation on ant society and behavior. EMPIRE OF THE ANTS is the story of a heavenly paradise that becomes a hellish nightmare when a toxic spill turns harmless ants into oversized radioactive monsters! And when sleazy land developer (Joan Collins) and her clients stumble into their creepy lair, they are horrified to learn that the ants are having a picnic… and humans are on the menu. These bad bugs are bent on exterminating mankind and building an evil empire where humans check in… but they can’t check out! Directed by sci-fi/horror legend Bert I. Gordon, the 1977 film is loosely based on the 1905 short story “The Empire of the Ants” by H. G. Wells and was shot in the Florida Everglades. ecently Naked Turtle Rum and the Sea Turtle Conservancy hosted their Nocturtle Event at the Don CeSar Hotel to celebrate the two’s recent partnership. Naked Turtle and Sea Turtle Conservancy are working together to retrofit lighting along nesting beaches in Florida to protect hatchlings. Already the changes to artificial lighting has saved over an estimated 13,000 baby turtles and in fact the Don CeSar is one of the hotels to receive the lighting retrofit resulting in darker beaches for safe turtle nesting. Guests enjoyed Naked Turtle cocktails such as the “Dark & Beachy”, “Jellyfish Shots” and “Naked Cola”, corn-holing and a t-shirt press. Executive Director of Sea Turtle Conservancy David Godfrey and Ryan Hunter Senior Manager, Innovation at Naked Turtle addressed the crowd, raising a glass to the partnership. To learn more, visit www.nakedturtle.com

7 HOMELESS MAMMOTHS WANDER NEW ENGLAND thru June 30 7 Homeless Mammoths Wander New England is an area premiere in the Tampa Bay area. This play is a deliciously smart and funny “academic sex comedy” about life in a small university town. Dean Wreen’s college is in dire financial straits, and a plan to close its on-campus natural history museum is sending unexpected shock waves in every direction—just as the Dean’s exgirlfriend has come back into her life. ob Dylan’s influence on popular music is incalculable. As a songwriter, he pioneered several different schools of pop songwriting, from confessional singer/songwriter to winding, hallucinatory, stream-of-consciousness narratives. As a vocalist, he broke down the notion that a singer must have a conventionally good voice in order to perform, thereby redefining the vocalist’s role in popular music. As a musician, he sparked several genres of pop music, including electrified folk-rock and country-rock. And that just touches on the tip of his achievements. Dylan’s force was evident during his height of popularity in the ‘60s, but his influence echoed throughout several subsequent generations, as many of his songs became popular standards and his best albums became undisputed classics of the rock & roll canon. Dylan’s influence throughout folk music was equally powerful, and he marks a pivotal turning point in its 20th century evolution, signifying when the genre moved away from traditional songs and toward personal songwriting. His commercial revival in the 2000s proved his staying power. For additional information, visit: www.LiveNation.com

W
hen the Southern-flavored party rap called crunk took over urban radio in 2004, Miami rapper Pitbull decided it was time to seek stardom. The way Pitbull sees it, “crunk ain’t nothin’ but bass music slowed down.” Miami bass music, that is, the kind Pitbull grew up on. His parents were first-generation Cuban immigrants who didn’t let their son forget about his culture. They required him to memorize the works of Cuban poet José Martí, and Pitbull understood the power of words right away. Southern acts like Poison Clan and Luther Campbell were early influences, but as he grew, the young rapper got turned on to the G-funk sound of the West Coast and the New York City point of view Nas brought to the game. Pitbull unleashed his debut full-length, M.I.A.M.I., in 2004, with the Lil Jon-produced single “Culo” leading the way. IN 2009 he released Rebelution, an album filled with slick club cuts including the hits “I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho)” and “Hotel Room Service.” Featuring the hit single “Bon Bon,” his all-Spanish-language album Armando followed in 2010. In 2011, his Planet Pit album arrived featuring the singles “Hey Baby (Drop It to the Floor)” and “Give Me Everything.”

brash and driven pop singer/songwriter, Kesha (Kesha Rose Sebert) was born in Los Angeles but moved at the age of four to Nashville, where her mother -- a longtime songwriter -- had inked a publishing deal. Before finishing high school, Kesha returned to L.A. for the sake of jump-starting her own music career. She came into contact with Dr. Luke who was impressed with her demo recordings. Kesha penned the Veronicas’ “This Love” and later contributed background vocals to Britney Spears’ “Lace and Leather,” both of which were released in 2008, but the biggest turning point came in 2009, when she was tapped to contribute vocals on Flo Rida’s Dr. Luke-produced “Right Round,” a number one Hot 100 hit. She subsequently signed to RCA, and her debut album, Animal was released in early 2010. Animal proved to be a big hit, reaching the top of the Billboard 200 and spinning off the number one single “TiK ToK.” The nine-song EP Cannibal appeared by the end of the year, featuring the single “We R Who We R.” It was followed by another stopgap release, 2011’s I Am the Dance Commander + I Command You to Dance: The Remix Album.

DWIGHT YOAKAM - June 11
With his stripped-down approach to traditional honky tonk and Bakersfield country, Dwight Yoakam helped return country music to its roots in the late ‘80s. Like his idols Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, and Hank Williams, Yoakam never played by Nashville’s rules. On each of his records, he twists around the form enough to make it seem like he doesn’t respect all of country’s traditions. Appropriately, his core audience was composed mainly of roots rock and rock & roll fans, not the mainstream country audience. Nevertheless, he was frequently able to chart in the country Top Ten, and he remained one of the most respected and adventurous recording country artists well into the ‘90s. In 2001, Yoakam debuted as a writer and director, also issuing the soundtrack South of Heaven, West of Hell to accompany it. Two years later, he debuted on a new label (Audium) with Population Me, while Reprise issued the compilation In Others’ Words to compete with it. In 2004 he released Dwight’s Used Records, a 14-track anthology of duets that appeared on other artists’ albums, unreleased covers, and cuts Yoakam contributed to various tribute compilations. An album of all new material, the self-produced Blame the Vain, followed in 2005 along with the live album, Live from Austin, TX. An album of Buck Owens covers, Dwight Sings Buck, appeared in 2007. SKIPPERS SMOKEHOUSE
Suncoast Blues Society Presents: An Evening With Eric Sardinas
- June 15
Slide guitarist and singer-songwriter Eric Sardinas has a reputation for packing intensity into his live performances. His six albums have displayed a distinct style that musically pushes the boundaries of rock and blues, and the world has taken notice. A Florida-born Sardinas was inspired by the energy of roots music from his mom’s soul, Motown, gospel, and early rock n’ roll collection. His instrument of choice is his signature electrified resonator guitar. Sardinas modernized an instrument made famous by traditional Blues artists in electrifying the instrument, and expanding the usual spectrum of what these guitars historically deliver musically. Now Sardinas has put his onstage lighting in a bottle for the new album Sticks & Stones, an 11-song powerhouse of his trademark slide guitar that is a vehicle to drive his inspiration from the roadhouse in to mainstream music. Sardinas’ unique mixture weaves his heavy blues and rock threads in to a flamethrower to the listener and takes them on a ride encompassing the past, present and future of what music is meant to be.

RUTH ECKERD HALL Taj Mahal - Wed, June 5
Composer and multi-instrumentalist Taj Mahal, a two-time GRAMMY winner and one of the most influential American blues and roots artists of the past half-century, has made no Faustian deals in his long and distinguished career, but he stands at an important crossroads nonetheless. In his neverending exploration of the complex origins and underpinnings of American music, he has forged a four-decade career by gathering and distilling countless musical traditions from a range of geographical and cultural sources: the Mississippi Delta, the Appalachian backwoods, the African continent, the Hawaiian islands, Europe, the Caribbean and so much more. Taj Mahal doesn’t just stand at the crossroads. He is the crossroads. Four decades have done nothing to dilute his energy quotient.

Gary’s unmistakable signature voice garnered six consecutive gold records and top ten Billboard hits such as “Young Girl” and “Woman Woman.” In 1968, Gary Puckett & The Union Gap sold more records than any other artist, including The Beatles. Gary Puckett has performed on more than thirty network television shows and prime time specials during his career, even adding a command performance for the President and Prince Charles at the White House. The Union Gap disbanded in 1971. Gary continues to tour nationally and internationally. “Indian Reservation” by Paul Revere & The Raiders hit #1 on the charts in 1971, selling more than 4 million copies which made it the biggest selling single for Columbia Records for almost a decade. This massive hit followed quite a few that came before it from the band including “Kicks,” “Hungry,” “Just Like Me,” “and “Good Thing” (as well as the Mark Lindsay Top Ten solo hit “Arizona,” from 1970). In all, the band would achieve no less than fifteen Top 40 hits. 42

BILLY IDOL - Wed, June 5
Along with Duran Duran, Billy Idol was one the first pop/rock artists to achieve massive success in the early ‘80s due to a then brand-new U.S. television network, MTV. Mixing his bad-boy good looks with an appealing blend of pop hooks, punk attitude, and a dance beats, Idol quickly rocketed to stardom. Rebel Yell became the singer’s best-selling album of his career (eventually going double platinum), spawning such hits as the album’s title track, “Eyes Without a Face,” and “Flesh for Fantasy,” establishing Idol as an arena headliner stateside. Idol issued a more extensive Greatest Hits set in 2001; the latter of which sold 500,000 copies in the U.S. alone. Next up was his first studio album since Cyberpunk, Devil’s Playground.
Earth Wind and Fire - Thurs, June 20
During the 1970s, a new brand of pop music was born, one that was steeped in African and African American styles (particularly jazz and R&B) but appealed to a broader cross section of the listening public. As founder and leader of the band Earth, Wind & Fire, Maurice White not only embraced but also helped bring about this evolution of pop, which bridged the gap that has often separated the musical tastes of black and white America. Their multiplatinum album Gratitude held the #1 pop album spot for three weeks in late 1975, and the group’s multi-platinum greatest hits set The Best Of Earth, Wind & Fire, Vol. I included a cover of Tthe Beatles’ Got To Get You Into My Life that went to #1 R&B and #9 pop in1978. Another single, September, made it to #1 on the R&B charts and #8 on the pop charts. The multi-platinum album I AM hit #3 on the pop charts in 1979. In 2000, the group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame. Founding members Philip Bailey, Verdine White and Ralph Johnson continue to tour with the legendary band performing at sold-out shows around the world. retty Darn Quick? Well yes, but PDQ restaurants actually stand for People Dedicated to Quality. PDQs are starting to pop up in the Tampa Bay area, and it’s a welcome sight. PDQ first opened it’s doors in North Carolina under a different name, but with the same concept of high quality food. They are especially known for their crispy chicken tenders and their delicious hand-spun shakes. Hand-breaded Chicken Tenders can be ordered as a 3-piece with a choice of sauces: honey mustard, sweet heat, chipotle BBQ, creamy garlic, or ranch, or in a sandwich, or in a salad. I also really enjoy PDQ’s “Handheld Thanksgiving” Grilled turkey Breast Sandwich, served on an egg bun with spices, mayo, lettuce and cranberry. There’s also a kid’s meal — and what kid doesn’t like chicken tenders? The menu is not complicated, and has some very
tasty side items with clever combinations, such as Fresh Blueberry Coleslaw, and Fresh Apple Slices with Toffee Dip. Fresh cut fries accompany meal orders. All sauces and salad dressings are homemade every day. The yummy shakes come in a dizzying variety of flavors: Traditional, Vanilla, Chocolate, Strawberry, Spe-

THE PALM RESTAURANT CELEBRATED NATIONAL BURGER MONTH IN MAY with an $8.37 burger lunch special every Monday. What may seem to be an odd price makes sense with the fact that it is based on the address of the first Palm Restaurant in 1926 at 837 2nd Ave in NY City. Even more special than the price is the “deliciousness” of the USDA Prime SteakBurgers, served with hand-cut fries. The 12 oz burgers are never flattened, so they cook naturally, and are prepared in five different menu choices. We chose the Second Ave Burger with Danish bleu cheese and smoked bacon, and the Classic Burger, with cheddar — both outstanding. Al started with a tasty Lobster Bisque Soup made with fresh lobster meat, cream and brandy, and Melissa thoroughly enjoyed an incredibly fresh Iceberg Lettuce Wedge with Danish blue cheese, toasted walnuts, bacon, cherry tomatoes, chives and fried onions. The Palm’s walls are fascinating — filled with cartoon artwork representing past and present customers (some very famous), a practice that dates back to the first restaurant which was located across the street from King Features Cartoons. Artists would hang out at The Palm and paint on the walls for fun or to pay for meals. The May special may be over now, but the burgers remain on the Palm’s menu as a lunch favorite of their patrons. The Palm is located at 205 Westshore Plaza in the Westshore Plaza Mall, Tampa; 813-849-7256. For more information, visit www.thepalm.com

h at ever the season, you know Season’s 52 is up to the challenge to come up with the appropriate savory dishes. The fresh grill and wine bar is located in 13 states, with 9 restaurants in Florida, and found locally in Tampa and Orlando. Seasons 52’s bustling open kitchen uses a woodfire grill and brick-oven, which actually produces food lower in calories. The restaurant states that nothing on its menu is over 475 calories. On a recent luncheon visit, my husband and I sampled Chef Clifford Pleau’s spring choices which were (and are) inspired by what’s best at the farmer’s market. Chelsea pres One delightful appetizer was a crisp Romaine and Kale ents Mini Indu lgences. Caesar Salad with shaved Parmesan and toasted garlic ciabatta croutons. The Kale gave the salad a little kick. We also tasted the Grilled Shrimp and Scallop Ceviche, with grilled pineapple, coconut, cilantro, limme and jalapeno, which had even more kick! Also receiving high marks was the creamy and delectable Crab and Corn Soup. Seasons 52 flatbreads are some of the best you will find. They manage to make the thinnest and crispiest flatbreads around. Chef created a clever Greek Lamb Gyro Flatbread with roasted lamb, feta cheese, shaved red onion, roma tomatoes, and tzatziki sauce. For our entrees we chose the tempting Caramelized Grilled Sea Scallops and the Oak-Grilled Filet Mignon. The scallop dish was served with roasted asparagus, and sun-dried tomato-mushroom pearl pasta, and was fresh and flavorful. The Filet Mignon was fork-tender and cooked to perfection. It came with cremini mushrooms, asparagus, and red bliss potatoes. Last, but never least, our delightful server, Chelsea, came by with a tempting array of “Mini” Indulgences, Season’s 52’s heavenly little concoctions, which are just enough to satisfy that end-of-meal sweet need. Season’s 52’s menu is always evolving, but you can count on it to be filled with amazing taste treats. You can check it all out on their website. Better still, just pay them a visit. PURE Glass Bottle Portable Re-usable Glass Drinking Bottle
F
or most people, glass bottles are the preferred choice of a drink container for better taste, cleanliness and fewer health risks. But the challenge with glass has always been its durability and the risk of shattering. That is until now. PURE Glass Bottle is a new portable re-usable glass drinking bottle that allows people to enjoy that pure taste of their favorite beverage in glass without worrying about spills or injury resulting from broken glass. SafeShell technology is used to apply a clear protective coating to the outside of the glass bottle to create a protective covering. If the glass does break, the coating encapsulates all the glass and liquid preventing messes and injuries from the breakage. The exterior of the bottle remains smooth to the touch so it can be disposed of or recycled safely and easily. The bottles are 100% recyclable and BPA free. The coating is also slip resistant making it easier to handle than other re-usable glass bottles. Although no glass container is shatter-proof, the PURE Glass Bottle is shatterresistant and much tougher to break than standard glass. The wide mouth design of the PURE Glass Bottle makes it easy to add ice, protein powder, water flavoring or any beverage. Two styles are available: the 17.5 oz Traveler; and the 25 oz Explorer. Both styles come with a selection of convenient tops and handles. For additional information, visit www.PUREglassbottle.com

Windmills, Butterflies and a Castle California’s Central Coast Yields Unexpected Treasures
W
here are we? I look out our hotel window and see a windmill and Danish architecture. But rather than being in Denmark, we are a mere 132 miles north of Los Angeles CA, in the very charming town of Solvang, located in the magnificent Santa Ynez Valley. This is one of the unsung treasures we found on our brief 2 night excursion north of Los Angeles. The others are the lovely cliffs and butterflies of Pismo Beach, and the more well-known Hearst Castle in San Simeon. The drive itself north along Hwy 1 is gorgeous and must be experienced.

Solvang T
he beautiful town of Solvang was settled in the early 1900s by a Danish group, and has kept it’s allure for over 100 years with it’s rolling hills, four windmills, Danish architecture, cuisine and hospitality. We lodged in the quaint King Frederik Inn right in the heart of town and wandered the streets enjoying all things Danish — from shopping to dining and even to listening to the Danish language, as it is still spoken by some. The King Frederik Inn has an Old World charm, and it is also comfortable with modern amenities. They offer great packages for travelers, such as a Golf package, a Summer Theater package, and a Wine Country package with a tour of award-winning wineries. We dined across the street from the inn at the Solvang Brewing Company, and enjoyed a Danish staple, Smorrebrod — an open-faced sandwich with rye bread and Frikadeller sausage, along with some Danish wedding soup. To acquaint ourselves with the town’s past, we visited the Elverhoj Museum, which is a lovely Scandanavian-style home turned into a museum of art and history. It is actually one of the few museums outside of Denmark devoted to the Danish culture. Of course, though the Danish group founded the town, the Chumash Indians were here way before they and the early Spanish settlers were. There is a welcome push going on to preserve the Chumash heritage and language as there is still a population of the Native Americans in the area. The nearby Chumash Casino provides income and jobs for many of them. A place of interest to us was seeing the old 1804 Santa Ines Mission. The church still has the original walls, floor tiles, and hand-painted murals by Indian artisans, and is one of the few remaining California missions that has been in continuous use since 1817. We also delighted in visiting the nearby Quicksilver Miniature Horse Ranch with their adorable 34-inch (and under) horses. It was hard not to take one of them home with us. But you can, as Quicksilver is a breeding facility. Our visit to Solvang was much too short, as there is much more to see and do there, such as the Hans Christian Andersen Museum (and yes, there is a halfsized statue of the famous Copenhagen “Little Mermaid” from Anderson’s fairytale in town), horseback riding, multiple vineyards and wine tasting rooms, an Ostrich farm, cycling or hiking into the Los Padres National Forest, fishing and golf.

On our next trip to Solvang we hope to cover some of these other experiences, and will try to time our visit to one of the many fun festivals they hold during the year. Every February the Greyhound Fest takes place, where folks and their greyhounds come from all over to Solvang to gather and bond over their favorite breed. Coming up in September, 2013 is the 77th Annual Solvang Danish Days where they really go all out DANISH! I have a feeling Christmas time is also amazing in Solvang. Pismo Beach S
ome of the most spectacular CA coast vistas can be found at Pismo Beach. The awesome coastal cliffs are enjoyed right from your hotel room at the Best Western Shore Cliff Lodge, which is where we stayed during our trek along the coast. The lodge’s lobby has floor-to-ceiling windows to best feature the incredible view, as do the guestrooms. An attractive white picket fence along the cliff keeps you from venturing too close to the edge (with a 90 foot drop). We took a stroll out to the hotel’s gazebo on the cliff and watched a beautiful sunset. If you time it right (winter), it’s the ideal spot for whale watching, as Pismo Beach is one of the premier places for the activity. The spacious guestrooms are welcoming, with muted colors and very comfortable bedding. Louvered sliding glass doors take you to your balcony where you can sit and enjoy the view. The lodge’s heated pool and spa feel good after a day of sightseeing, and a complimentary breakfast adds to the good value of your stay.

Of course CA’s Central Coast is famous for wineries, so you won’t be surprised to find wine tastings and tours galore in the area. One of the popular tours is the Grapeline Wine Country Shuttle which has a lot of packages to choose from with varied itineraries. What you may be surprised at is Pismo Beach’s spectacular Monarch Butterfly Grove. Every year, from late October to February, thousands of Monarchs flock to Pismo Beach to get away from the freezing cold further north. The butterflies form clusters, hanging one wing down over the one below it to form a shelter from the elements. Scientists are baffled by why the butterflies appear at the same site every year, even though they only live for 6 months, and once they leave in March, that group never returns. It is one of the biggest clusters in the country, and the event attracts folks from all over.

Hearst Castle The gorgeous Neptune Pool

H
earst Castle in San Simeon is a must visit if you’re traveling along California’s Central Coast. It’s fame precedes it with the fairytale romance of newspaper tycoon, William Randolf Hearst, and movie star, Marion Davies, but the structure and grounds are something to behold. WRH called it his “ranch”, but we would (and do) call it a castle. Hearst’s father bought the land in 1865, and by the time WRH inherited it, it had grown to 250,000 acres and 14 miles of coastline. Designed by architect Julia Mogan, the Boroque style castle was built and worked on from 1919 to 1947. A packrat with expensive taste, WRH was an unstoppable collector, and furnished his home with fabulous treasures from European castles and estates. He managed to fill his 90,000 square foot “ranch” of 56 bedrooms, 61 bathrooms, and 19 sitting rooms. Also part of the estate are indoor and outdoor swimming pools, tennis courts, a movie theater, and an airfield. The huge Neptune pool is especially amazing with a Roman Temple overlooking it. WRH’s guest list was a who’s who of the day, with Hollywood and political royalty gracing it’s rooms, and his lover, Ms. Davies, the charming hostess. The property is much smaller today, some acreage having been sold off during the years, however, standing at the castle, the property left is still as far as the eye can see. Different tours are available, and one that sounds particularly interesting is the evening tour, where visitors experience the castle as one of Hearsts’ guests would have. Docents in period dress propel visitors back to the 30s.

he countdown is on for the launch of Space Shuttle Atlantis, the new $100-million, 90,000-square-foot home of the historic spacecraft, opening June 29 at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. This one-of-a-kind experience delivers extraordinary access to Space Shuttle Atlantis – from only a few feet away, guests of all ages will be awed and inspired with an up-close, 360-degree view of the orbiter, the wear of its 33 missions apparent on its protective external tiles. The spacecraft will be dramatically showcased as if it were in space – as only astronauts have had a chance to see it departing from the International Space Station. Atlantis has been elevated 30 feet and rotated at a 43.21-degree angle, and its payload bay doors will be open and its Canadarm (robotic arm) extended. Space Shuttle Atlantis tells the story of NASA’s 30-year Space Shuttle Program, and its most notable accomplishments. One of the most complicated and sophisticated pieces of equipment ever built, Space Shuttle Atlantis was a vehicle that launched like a rocket, flew in orbit like a spacecraft and landed on a runway like a glider. The Space Shuttle Program transformed the way humans explore space and look at the universe. For more information on Kennedy Space Center Complex, visit www.KennedySpaceCenter.com

ArtLines PHILIP PEARLSTEIN RETROSPECTIVE: Philip Pearlstein’s People, Places, Things - thru June 16 Philip Pearlstein’s People, Places, Things is the most comprehensive retrospective of his art to date and features 62 paintings, drawings, and prints. Many have never before been seen by the public or outside of New York City. Born in 1924 in Pittsburgh, Mr. Pearlstein studied at Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie Mellon University), where he formed a friendship with fellow student Andy Warhol (then Warhola). When he was stationed in Jacksonville for training during World War II, he produced a series of watercolors focusing on army life and the tropical landscape, and later served in Italy, designing signs and diagrams and sketching symbols for maps. After graduating from college, Mr. Pearlstein set off for New York with Warhol. His powerful painting Superman (1952), from The Museum of Modern Art, made him a forerunner of Pop Art. Mr. Pearlstein completed an MA in art history at The Institute of Fine Arts at New York University and began his career as a highly respected and popular professor of art. During his time at Pratt, he produced expressionist landscapes and other works in response to Abstract Expressionism. He presents his models together and singly and in highly unusual poses. The perspectives are compelling and parts of the body, including the head, are sometimes cut off. The models usually do not look at or particularly relate to each other, or the viewer. He has increasingly positioned his models with a wide array of objects, seemingly turning human figures into still life elements. Reflections in mirrors add another dimension to his compositions. 76
These juxtapositions of figures and objects create tension and complexity. Mr. Pearlstein’s work is in more than 75 public collections.
Pleasure Grounds and Restoring Spaces: Photographs of our National Parks - thru Oct 6 This exhibit is full of the majesty of nature revealed by some of our most gifted photographers. The more than 30 images offer a visual extravaganza. In the face of rapid industrialization, President Theodore Roosevelt and naturalist John Muir led the urgent call to protect America’s bounty. A dramatic image of Teddy Roosevelt on Glacier Point, Yosemite (1903), presents him as a rugged outdoorsman aligned with American power and promise. Photography not only inspired conservation, but also popularized new tourist sites. Many photographers like Ansel Adams, who is represented by four photographs, have been influential in defending our environment. The exhibit primarily features images depicting national and state parks and landmarks. The earliest date from the 1860s. Aaron Siskind and Brett Weston abstracted elements of the landscape, narrowing the focus and offering a modernist perspective. Florida meets the West in Uelsmann’s richly imaginative Flamingos Visit Yosemite (1985). Floridian Clyde Butcher’s two large-scale photographs in the exhibition spotlight the state’s wild beauty. In addition to Yosemite and the Everglades, there are photographs of Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon, Mesa Verde National Park, the Grand Tetons, and more. Among the other leading photographers represented are Edward S. Curtis, Margaret Bourke-White, Don Worth, William Clift, Laura Gilpin, and Linda Connor. 255 Beach Dr. N.E., St. Petersburg, 727-896-2667; www.fine-arts.org

Faded Elegance: Photographs of Havana by Michael Eastman consists of twenty-nine, 6 x 7 1/2 ft. photographs taken by the artist between 1999 and 2010. Eastman explores Havana’s changing cultural landscape in his images of the city’s architecture and lush interiors, ravaged by the effects of time. His largescale photographs evoke the nostalgia and wealth of a bygone era, while shedding light on the harsh economic realities faced in present day Cuba. While in Havana, Eastman photographed a number of subjects, from the interiors of homes along Ambassador Way, to stairwells and music schools, to abstract patterns found on the exteriors of buildings. Eastman is known for his richly colored photographs, which he captures with his 4 x 5 camera. This exhibition will be the first to explore the depth and range of Eastman’s Havana photographs.

Ranging widely in subject matter and style, the fifty-three paintings and four sculptures were produced by leading artists of the day, including Georgia O’Keeffe, Milton Avery, Marsden Hartley, Stuart Davis, Arthur Dove, Rockwell Kent, Joseph Stella, Elie Nadelman, and Norman Rockwell. Significant works by these and other artists in the exhibition exemplify their unique contributions to modern culture. Circus Moderns - thru Sept 16 During the early twentieth century, stars of the American circus were among the most idolized celebrities of the day. Their portraits were used to sells tickets as circuses moved from town to town. A selection of posters, dating from the 1910’s through the 1940’s feature some of the most famous faces ever seen in the center ring. FLORIDA MUSEUM of PHOTOGRAPHIC ARTS Vivian Maier: Out of the Shadows - thru June 16 The story of Vivian Maier (1926-2009) is seemingly beyond belief. An American of French and Austro-Hungarian extraction, Vivian bounced between Europe and the United States before coming back to New York City in 1951 and settling in Chicago where she’d spend most of the rest of her life working primarily as a nanny and later as a caregiver. During both working hours and leisure, Maier would shoot photos that she zealously hid from the eyes of others. Taking snapshots into the late 1990s, Maier would leave behind a body of work comprising over 100,000 negatives.
Maier’s massive, never before seen, and completely unknown body of work would come to light when in 2007 when the contents of her 5 storage lockers were publicly sold at an auction house on Chicago’s Northwest Side. From there, the work would go viral and would eventually impact the world over. Also on view is the Tampa Collector’s Showcase featuring works of Diane Arbus, Walker Evans, Robert Mapplethorpe, Edward Weston, Ruth Bernhard, Herbert List, August Sander, Jerry Uelsmann and Annie Leibovitz just to name a few. THE INN ON FIFTH Inviting Elegance by Melissa Wolcott Martino and Al Martino

ntering the lobby of the elegant Inn On Fifth in Naples, FL, one would never guess the building housing the hotel was once a 1951-era bank. The hotel is a mere 16 years old, but has the look and feel of seasoned grand dame — perhaps because of all the marble, warm lighting, and lovely antique furnishings adorning the lobby and common areas.

odern British Colonial comes to mind in describing the hotel’s guest rooms decor. Inviting and comfortable, yet sophisticated with predominate shades of buttercup yellow and pale green. The Inn’s pillow-top bedding is divine, and slumber came easily to us after busy days exploring Naples. All the rooms have sliding French doors leading to balconies or terraces with rattan or wrought iron furniture. We made full use of our balcony in the mornings with coffee and conversation in our snuggly hotel-supplied robes while watching Fifth Avenue come alive. To get ourselves going, we enjoyed a dip in the Inn’s rooftop pool before heading out for the day. A must during a stay at the Inn is a visit (or two!) to the Inn’s luxurious Spa On Fifth. Utilizing Feng Shui and all natural products, skilled staff will relax or rejuvinate you with a variety of treatments. McCabes Irish Pub ining can be found right at the hotel’s location, with McCabe’s Irish Pub and Truluck’s Seafood, Steak and Crab House.
McCabe’s is a truly authentic Irish Pub, as a lot of the interior findings, paneling and decor were shipped over from Ireland. The menu consists of traditional Irish fare, with hearty Irish stew, shepherd’s pie, angus beef and grilled seafood, and, of course, Irish beer. The pub’s site includes the old bank vault (complete with the thick steel tumbler door) which they utilize as a private dining room. With live entertainment and a fun crowd, McCabe’s is the place to be. Truluck’s Seafood, Steak and Crab House is next door to McCabes, and is the most popular fine dining spot in Naples. The restaurant is elegant, and service is impeccable. The food, however, is what keeps folks returning, and reservations are a must (months in advance for Saturday night!) The Naples Truluck’s is one of eleven owned by the company (others located in Texas, California and more in Florida.) To supply all the restaurants, Truluck’s founded their own sustainable fisheries. Their menu changes seasonally, as their seafood is only the freshest possible. The most popular dishes are their Dungeness and King Crab when in season. All their vegetables and meats are organic, and the absolutely delicious, tender steak comes from Niman Ranch grass fed, free-range cows. Truluck’s has over 100 wines by the glass, and their wine program is always changing.

hey say real estate is most valued by location, so the Inn On Fifth is prime. It is located right in the heart of Naples, on it’s most prized shopping street, and short ride to most area attractions. Unfortunately, we did not have a lot of time to stay in Naples, but did manage to visit two of the area’s popular attractions, the Naples Zoo, and the Naples Princess luxury yacht, and both experiences were memorable.
Naples Zoo handler shows us how a sloth likes to just hang around.
The Naples Zoo is non-profit, with conservation being key. Begun in 1919 as a botanical garden, animals were introduced in 1969. A guided boat takes visitors around islands inhabited by different primates, where the aniZoo mals swing freely in trees and “jungle gyms”. Among other events are a giraffe feeding (where guests can feed the giraffes themselves) and an alligator feeding (no, no guests - just handlers for this one!) The shows are fun and fascinating.
The Naples Princess is a beautiful three-year-old, 105 ft. long, $4M custom built yacht, which sails several times a day out of the Port O Call Marina. There are different sailing options available, from afternoon sightseeing to a sunset dinner cruise. You glide past waterfront mansions, and most likely will see some interesting wildlife, like dolphins playing in the wake of the boat, or some slow-moving manatees. We heartily recommend the sunset cruise, for the beauty of the area and catching one of Florida’s spectacular sunsets.
The Inn On Fifth offers some very attractive vacation packages year round, and with an average 75° temperature in Naples, it is well worth a visit at any time of year.

SMITHSONIAN EXHIBITION JOURNEY STORIES thru July 5 The City of Tarpon Springs/Center for Gulf Coast Folklife is hostIng Journey Stories. This Museum on Main Street exhibition was created by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service. Admission to the exhibit is free. Journey Stories explores the powerful tales of how we and our ancestors came to America and to the place we now call home—stories that we all find in their personal heritage. They may be stories of a family uprooting itself in order to stay together, sons and daughters moving to another land, distant ancestors, or trying to find a retirement paradise. Americans have always been mobile, and travel over trails, rails, rivers, roads and in the sky has shaped our cultural landscape. Journey Stories traces many tales, from the colonial period to the present. Tarpon Springs Curator Tina Bucuvalas has created a small exhibition about local journey stories, as well as a series of public programs that explore local and regional connections. For further information, please call Helene MacNeil at 727-942-5605 or Tina Bucuvalas at 727-937-1130.

Keeping Your Pet Safe in the Summer Heat from Heidi Ganahl, CEO of Camp Bow Wow Pets Need Sunscreen - Just like humans, cats and dogs can get sunburned, especially if he/she has light-colored hair. Animal sunburns can cause the same problems as that of humans: peeling, redness and even cancer. As skin cancer in pets is a serious concern, purchasing pet-friendly sun screen can go a long way in protecting the health of your pet when the heat kicks in. Places that are easy to forget, but prone to burning are: inside the nostrils, tip of nose, around your dog’s lips and the inside of ears for dogs with standup ears. Summer Style Giving your dog a lightweight summer haircut helps prevent overheating. Shave down to a one-inch length, but never to the skin, so your pet still has some protection from the sun. Brushing cats more often than usual can prevent problems caused by excessive heat. Pets Need Extra Water…But don’t let them drink just anything - Give your dog extra water during the summer, but be sure not to leave the water out for too long. Change the water often to prevent your pet from getting sick from bacteria that can grow in hot water. Also, when dogs are thirsty, they are bound to drink something they shouldn’t. Puddles of what may look like water on the ground can be mistaken for dangerous chemicals, so keep an eye out when your dog is looking for something to sip on.
Make a Safe Splash - Do not leave pets unsupervised at the beach – not all pets are good swimmers. Introduce your pet to water gradually and make sure they wear flotation devices when on boats. To remove salt from the fur, rinse your

ly. Signs of this include excessive panting, staring, anxious facial expressions, warm skin, refusal to obey commands by owner, vomiting, collapse and rapid heartbeat. If you suspect that your pet is suffering from this, lower the animal’s body temperature by applying towels soaked in cool water to the hairless areas of the body. Often the pet will respond after just a few minutes of cooling, only to falter again with his temperature soaring back up or falling to well below what is normal. If this happens, take the dog to the vet immediately – don’t try to solve this yourself.
Pets at Outdoor Summer Events - Warm temperatures and outdoor fun go hand-in-hand, but when the temperatures hit record highs, refrain from taking your pet to crowded summer events like concerts or fairs. The loud noises and crowds, combined with the heat, can be stressful and dangerous for pets. Exercising in the Heat - Pets need exercise even when it is hot, but show extra care to older and overweight pets that are more at risk from high temperatures. If you go for a run on the beach, limit exwww.AccentOnTampaBay.com

ig Cat Rescue is the world’s largest sanctuary for big cats who have been abused, abandoned, retired from performing acts, or saved from being slaughtered for fur coats. The sanctuary houses tigers, lions, leopards, cougars, bobcats, lynx, ocelots, servals, caracals and others — a total of 16 of the 35 species of wild cat, many of whom are threatened, endangered, or now extinct in the wild. At this home for rare and exotic cats, The narrow mission of Big Cat Rescue is to provide the best permanent home they can for these cats. The broader mission of the sanctuary is to reduce the number of cats that suffer the fate of abandonment and/or abuse and to encourage preservation of habitat and wildlife. People are urged to behave in a way that will support these goals by teaching people about the plight of the cats, both in the wild and in captivity. This is accomplished through guided tours, educational programs for young people, and by maintaining a website that is a great resource for information about exotic cats. Big Cat Rescue has built enclosures in a very natural habitat with foliage and shelter on a 45 acre site, and provides the best nutritional and medical care possible. They have conditioning and enrichment programs to provide for the cats physical and psychological well being. The sanctuary is supported entirely by donation. Big Cat Rescue is located at 12802 Easy Street, Tampa. Call 813-920-4130 for more information, or visit BigCatRescue.org.

rlando amounted to little more than scattered log cabins in the pine forest when Orange County established it as the county seat in 1857. One of the earliest buildings was a log hotel, indicating Orlando’s future as a tourist destination. After its incorporation in 1875, wood-frame structures replaced the log cabins, and prosperous citizens built large houses around the developing government and business center. By 1900, as Orlando recovered from the economic disaster of the Great Freeze of 1894 and 1895, brick construction replaced wood frame as once pretentious houses close to the central city were torn down to make way for modern business blocks. As residences moved to less congested neighborhoods, schools and churches followed. From its beginning, people arrived in Orlando to prosper and build. Those men and their buildings are gone, but the history of the city is richer because of their presence. Orlando’s story can be traced through the continuing cycle of constructing, demolishing, and rebuilding anew.
gmont Key has been a sentinel for ships entering Tampa Bay from the Gulf of Mexico for hundreds of years. Early European explorers recognized the island’s strategic location. Its story reflects major events in the history of the United States and Florida, as the island played a role in the Seminole Wars, the Civil War, the Spanish-American War and World Wars I and II. Its lighthouse, now automated, is still a beacon for ships. For many years, people have enjoyed the beaches of Egmont Key, walked the red brick “roads to nowhere” and explored the ruins of Fort Dade. Authors Don and Carol Thompson aim to foster an appreciation of the uniqueness and beauty of Egmont Key, as well as an understanding of its place in history. Since retiring from teaching high school social studies, Don Thompson performed first-person interpretations of such historical figures as Florida railroad baron Henry B. Plant. He has authored four previous books and resides in Parrish Florida. He is a member of the Egmont Key Alliance. Carol Thompson is a retired fifth grade elementary teacher. In addition to working on two published local history books, Carol has completed a juvenile novel, as yet unpublished.
