LOCAL FOCUS Da Vinci Machines Exhibition at Bradenton Municipal Auditorium - thru July 27

The Da Vinci Machines Exhibition, which opened in mid-November at the Bradenton Municipal Auditorium has extended its stay through July 27 due to an overwhelming response from locals and visitors to the area. Originally scheduled to return to its home at the Museum of Leonardo Da Vinci in Florence, Italy in April, the exhibition has attracted more than 15,000 guests, all seeking the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to view more than 60 hand-crafted inventions built from Da Vinci’s 500-year-old designs and experience one of just three such exhibitions in the world. The exhibit is the life work of three generations of Florentine artisans. They have painstakingly brought to life the creations and concepts devised by the scientist, inventor and artist. The exhibition models are presented in four major themes: Military machines, Flying machines, Nautical & Hydraulic machines as well as devices and inventions illustrating the Principles of Mechanics. The uniquely interactive machines are a popular aspect of each exhibition as visitors can touch and handle these models to gain a first-hand appreciation of how they work. Explanatory notes and illustrative panels with Leonardo’s drawings from his codices accompany each model. The exhibition concludes with the performance of the highly regarded, Broadway-style show, The Phat Pack. A collaboration of top actors from Broadway shows like The Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables, The Phat Pack combines Broadway songs, American standards, Las Vegas favorites and original scores to create an upbeat and humorous musical performance. The show was recently awarded the “Best of Las Vegas 2013” for Best All-Around Performers by the Las Vegas Review Journal. The limited engagement will run in the Bradenton Auditorium on Sat, August 2, and Sun, August 3. For show details, visit www.phatpackshow.com. Christmas in July Charity Softball Game - July 12

The Holiday Sharing Fund’s Mission is to enhance the quality of Christmas for underprivileged children by providing bikes and other support. The Holiday Sharing Program’s mission is achieved partly by funds raised by the annual Oldsmar / Safety Harbor Mayor’s Breakfast led by the Oldsmar / Eastlake Rotary Club and the Upper Tampa Bay Chamber of Commerce. The Holiday Sharing Fund evolved when the Oldsmar Community Policing Deputies received support from local businesses to purchase bicycles needed for Christmas gifts to local needy children. During its first year in 2009, the fund was able to provide 20 bicycles to underprivileged children in the Oldsmar area. In 2010 the fund provided 27 bicycles, in 2011 - 34 bicycles, in 2012 - 57 bicycles, in 2013 - 66 bicycles, all came with helmets and 26 locks for older children. A major fundraiser is the annual softball game “Christmas in July” held at Bright House Field. This game features a team of Sheriff’s Deputies verses a team comprising City/Chamber employees. The charity softball game is followed by a Thresher’s game, with food, drinks and fireworks.

With their latest album, English Oceans releasing on March 4th of this year, Cooley says, “This lineup is so direct. It can go from this chainsaw rock n roll to very delicate, pretty-sounding stuff. We wrote a lot of those kinds of songs, and this lineup got all of that well.” Looking at the accomplishments of English Oceans from the perspective of DBT’s nearly three-decade history, both Cooley and Hood decline to hedge their bets on the quality of their latest work. 711 N. The creation of the world’s largest Key lime pie, the wacky Miss Key Lime Pageant, pie-eating and cooking contests and other tasty temptations await Key West visitors July 3-5 during the second annual Key Lime Festival. Celebrating the Florida Keys’ signature dessert and the tiny fruit that inspired it, the flavorful festival is to kick off Thursday, July 3, with a 2-5 p.m. Key Lime Bar Krawl. Plans call for “krawlers” to sample Key lime martinis and margaritas at local watering holes and select their favorites. The festival’s highlight is to be an attempt by event founder David Sloan, author of “The Ultimate Key Lime Pie Cookbook,” and three fellow chefs to shatter their own record for baking the largest Key lime pie in history. In 2013 the quartet created a gargantuan pie that measured more than 8 feet in diameter and required the juice of 5,760 yellow Key limes. They plan to prepare and serve the 2014 pie, expected to reach 9 feet in diameter, during a lively street party set for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, July 4, on Greene Street just off Duval Street. Key lime pie’s primary ingredients are condensed milk, egg yolks and Key lime juice, with the creamy filling typically nestled in a graham cracker crust and topped with whipped cream or meringue. Attractions Saturday, July 5, include a Key Lime Pie Eating Contest and a pie-making challenge for amateur and professional bakers. Pies are to be judged on criteria including appearance, flavor balance and originality, and spectators can purchase tickets to sample and cast People’s Choice votes. The festival is to conclude with Saturday night’s Miss Key Lime U.S.A. Pageant, a tangy takeoff on the Miss America competition. The contestant who scores highest in the talent, costume, vintage style and Q-&-A categories will take the crown and step into the “limelight.” www.keylimefestival.com/ www.AccentOnTampaBay.com

ust open for a few months now, the 137-room Epicurean Hotel is located in the trendy SoHo district of Tampa, among some of the best restaurants the city has to offer. Indeed, directly across the street is the world famous Bern’s Steakhouse.

Although the chic hotel will appeal to anyone, it has been designed with the unique concept of attracting “foodies” in particular, as well as wine connoisseurs. In a prominent spot in the hotel is the Epicurean Theatre, where all things culinary take place. An open kitchen is the star as guests eagerly learn tips from master chefs and sommeliers. You do not have to be a guest of the hotel to sign up for classes. Bern’s Fine Wines & Spirits also has a spot in the hotel where you can purchase fine wines with the advice of knowledgeable staff.

Also on property is Chocolate Pi, a delightful dessert shop with clever and delicious handmade confections created by Executive Pastry Chef Kim Yelvington. If you make your way up to the hotel’s roof, you will find the Edge, a comfortable open air bar where you can try out some of Epicurean’s signature cocktails and wines, and nosh on hors d’oeuvres.

The hotel’s guestrooms are sleek and calming with all the modern amenities one would expect from a new property. St. Francis Inn Bed & Breakfast Inn with a Long History in St. Augustine, FL Story and photos by Melissa Wolcott Martino and Al Martino

S t. Augustine, America’s oldest city, also has the richest and most fascinating history, with the flags of five countries having flown over it since 1513 starting with Spain. The French came next (1564), then Great Britain (1763), Spain again (1784), The United States (1821) the Confederacy, briefly (1861), and back to the United States in 1865. (Hopefully to remain for the rest of time.)

S t. Augustine should be on everyone’s bucket list for a visit, as it is unlike any other city in the USA. To experience the old world charm of the city, we highly recommend a stay at the city’s oldest inn — the St. Francis Inn — which is located in the heart of the historic district. Built in 1791, it has seen a lot of changes in it’s city and weathered many storms to remain the wonderful inn it is today.

f course, through the years the inn has gone through a lot of changes itself. Originally built by the Gaspar Garcia family, the home is constructed of 18” thick “coquina” limestone walls (compacted particles of seashells) which was easily found in the area, and was very prevalent in the day. It is still found today in most of the period structures throughout St. Augustine. The old fort, Castillo de San Marcos (1672), is made of coquina which was a good foundation for it as it is soft, so a shot cannonball would just sink into the walls rather than shattering them.

O

Francis Inn’s most famous ghost (whose room you can stay in on the third floor.) We stayed in the Garcia Suite, directly across from Lily’s, which also has it own ghost story. Quite a number of ghost hunters have visited the inn through the years, and have witnessed activity for themselves first hand. All experienced paranormal activity has been described as friendly or mischievous rather than frightening. The owners themselves have never seen Lily in their 30 years at the inn. Our visit concluded with nary a ghostly apparition. I don’t know if that makes me feel relieved or deprived!

t. Francis Inn’s original house was laid out according to orders by the King of Spain to the citizens of St. Augustine. Homes were constructed directly on the street with front entrances shielded to provide a defense from invasion. At the St. Francis, you step into a delightful side courtyard to enter the inn. There is a recorded history of the different owners through the years to the present day. An inn since 1845, it has always maintained the reputation as being one of the best in the area. A third floor was added in 1888 as well as some property across the street, which is also part of the inn today. It also had different names through the years, settling on the St. Francis Inn in 1948.

E

S

he current owners are Margaret and Joe Finnegan, who are very hands on, and have lovingly preserved the inn’s old world ambiance while adding modern touches and comfort. They are very welcoming and will regale you with tales from the inn’s history — including, of course, ghosts! Ask about Miss Lily, the St.

T

ach of the St. Francis Inn’s 11 guest rooms and suites are unique and all are very homey. Some of the guest rooms have such amenities as private balconies, rockers, and whirlpool tubs. After visiting the check in desk in the foyer, the first time we walked up the stairs to our suite, we reflected on all the folks who had passed this way over the 200 plus years of the house — such a sense of history! It’s a bit thrilling walk the same halls as Mr. Garcia did all those many years ago. I must stress that although the inn is very old, the amenities are not. Beds are very comfortable, bathrooms have new fixtures that fit in with the old world feel, plush robes are in every guest room, high-speed internet is found throughout the inn, there’s a solarheated swimming pool, complimentary guest bicycles to tool around old town on, a lovely courtyard to relax or enjoy a beverage. An unexpected touch was the fresh flowers and sherry we found in our guest room upon arrival.

hich now brings us to the breakfast part of “Bed and Breakfast”. The St. Francis serves up a delightful homemade breakfast buffet which is different every day, and includes at least two hot entrees, fruit, freshly baked breads, coffee and assorted teas. You can enjoy your breakfast in your room, on a balcony, in the courtyard or in the dining room (oldest part of the inn dating to 1791) where you can meet other guests. Weekend days have special brunches, as do holidays. There are complimentary specialty coffees all day long in the front room of the inn, and from 5-6 pm, guests can partake of a social hour in the courtyard with different appetizers daily. From 8-9:30 pm you won’t want to miss the evening homemade desserts with beverages.

The staff at the inn are very accommodating, and can assist and provide guests with any special event needs, such as gift baskets, picnic baskets, massage arrangements, etc. Wouldn’t you and your significant other love to be picked up at the inn by horse-drawn carriage and take a tour of the old city? It can be arranged! nother great plus of the inn is its location in the old city. Some of the best St. Augustine sight-seeing is walkable from the St. Francis, which is situated on the corner of St. George and St. Francis Streets. Across the street from the inn is the oldest house in St. Augustine, the González-Alvarez House. The site is from the 1600s and the present house is from the early 1700s. Here you can see the furnishings of the different occupations (Spanish, British, and American) and how the residents lived. Besides the many historical homes, are the unique shops, restaurants and museums in the old city. We really enjoyed the Pirate & Treasure Museum which is cleverly laid out and teeming with fascinating objects and terrible tales of life on the high seas. Looking out in the harbor when we came out of the museum, we were amazed to see a Spanish Galleon (The El Galeón, a 175foot replica) sailing into the harbor. Great timing! We spent quite a bit of time in the fascinating Colonial Quarter, a 2-acre living history experience covering the 16th to 18th centuries of St. Augustine. The best way to familiarize yourself with St. Augustine’s history and attractions is to take the Old Town Trolley, which gives you an overview of points of interest, and lets you hop on and off at your leisure.

here are a lot of really good — and non-chain! — restaurants in Old Town and we visited several of them during our stay. All were quite enjoyable and will be revisited on our next trip to St. Augustine. The Bistro de Leon brings a touch of France to St. Augustine, under the expert helm of Chef Jean-Stephane Poinard. His Flounder with Hollandaise Lemon Sauce and Asparagus was exceptional. In the Colonial Quarter we found the Taberna Del Caballo, which maintains the theme of the Spanish and British occupations. Wait staff is in period costume, and the kitchen is old style with no fryers and no grill. Food is Florida sourced and fresh baked. We sampled the delectable Marinated Beer Steamed Shrimp, and Crostini with Smoked Cheddar Cheese and Caramelized Onions. Meehan’s Irish Pub is one of St. Augustine’s most popular restaurants, not only for the food, but also for its location on Charlotte St. overlooking the Matanzas River. We had a 5-course dinner with Duck Confit, Saffron Steeped Shellfish, Park Shank Lollipops, Slow Braised Ox Tail, topped off by a Double Chocolate Baileys Bread Pudding. Yes, it was delicious!

among artworks that might not otherwise be exhibited together. This series examines western representations of children and childhood objects from the Eighteenth Century until the present. The media presented is diverse, from Winslow Homer’s illustrations of children and their activities from Harper’s Weekly to Polixeni Papapetrou’s contemporary restaging of Lewis Carroll’s Victorian photographs of costumed children. The selection of artworks demonstrates historical representations of the role of children as well as conceptual approaches that utilize childhood and its objects for other explorations, as in the work of Harold Edgerton, Ruth Bernhard and Suzanne Camp Crosby (photo displayed here). The role of the child within societies has varied greatly through the years. Puritans believed that children are inherently wicked, while Rousseau’s concept of natural moral purity was popularized during the Enlightenment. The Victorian era focused on education 84

The photographs by Aaron Siskind in this exhibition belong to one of the most important visual records of Harlem during the Great Depression. Siskind (19031991) turned to photography around 1930 and joined the Photo League in 1932. In 1936 Siskind founded the League’s Feature Group, which documented New York City, focusing especially on Harlem. Siskind had left the League by 1941 and began to turn to abstraction. In 1981 a collection of fifty-seven photographs from the series were published as a book, along with the Federal Writers’ Project’s oral history of Harlem. Subjects range from intimate domestic interiors to lively street scenes. There are powerful depictions of churchgoers and arresting ones of performers and Harlem’s nightlife, but the images of children are especially moving. While these photographs vary in tone, one senses not only Siskind’s artistry, but his intense humanity and exquisite sensitivity in representing his subject.

Tampa Museum of Art and Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg Collaborate for Groundbreaking 2014 Exhibition The Tampa Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg present the first U.S. exhibition to focus solely on the post-Mao generation of Chinese artists that offers a look at how China’s megadevelopment has impacted its youth culture and spawned new art trends. My Generation: Young Chinese Artists, will be on view June 7 through September 21, 2014. My Generation: Young Chinese Artists is an extended look at the new generation of artists emerging in mainland China since 2000, the year that China opened wide its doors to international artists and that Chinese artists began to command attention on the world’s stage. All of the artists in this exhibition were born after 1976 and the end of the Cultural Revolution. Almost all of them are products of the One Child Policy and have grown up in a country with a high-powered market economy.

86

All of them, whether educated in the West or not, have been exposed to global art movements through the Internet and increasingly liberalized education at China’s art academies. My Generation is the first exhibition in the US and Europe to showcase these emerging artists and is a collaboration between the Tampa Museum of Art and Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg. The WORD is… thru August 17

Three of the exhibitions that will hold down galleries at the Dunedin Fine Art Center this summer, will be multi-syllabic. Each of them takes words as a departure point. Some leave them at the door with the title (Poetics of Space), while others bring them to the party and celebrate each phrase. The fourth celebrates the core of the Dunedin Fine Art Center’s educational mission, its faculty. Word UP! - A mixed media celebration of the WORD in contemporary art-making featuring works by Leslie Fry, Vancouver artist Ben Skinner, Sister Corita Kent and select artists from the collection of USF’s Graphic studio including: Lesley Dill, Abbott Miller and Ellen Lupton, Pat Steir and John Yau.

The Poetics of Space - Elizabeth Huey, Mernet Larsen, Leslie Lerner and Charlotte Schulz explore the ‘poetics of space’, those spaces we seek, create – or otherwise, privately inhabit – where imagination finds refuge. Title from the book by the same name, by Gaston Bachelard. In a Dark Time,The Eye Begins to See… Juried all-media exhibit by artists visually interpreting a single line from a poem of their choosing. This exhibition will present an overview of the gift and will include works by Nicolas Africano, Silvia Levenson, Peter Hora, and Stanislav Libensky among many others. In the Streets: Photographing Urban Spaces thru July 13 In the Streets: Photographing Urban Spaces explores the many ways in which 20th century photographers responded to the rise of the modern metropolis. Photographs by Bernice Abbott document the rapid changes in the built environment, and works by Andreas Feininger and Walter Rosenblum track the social conditions of urbanity. Beth Lipman: Precarious Possessions - thru Sept 7 The still life has long been used in painting as a visual metaphor for considerations of materiality, the conspicuous consumption of wealth, and the fleeting nature of life. Beth Lipman uses the vocabulary of the still life, particularly the table setting with its various vessels, foods, and associated objects, in complex sculptures created in clear glass. Precarious Possessions is an installation of life-sized Victorian furniture recreated in glass sculpture. Each of the three works, Crib, Cradle, and Sideboard with Blue China represents a particular moment in our lifespan and reminds us of our ties to the objects which define us through societal conventions.

Looking Good... Vionic

Restore Natural Foot Function

T

www.vionicshoes.com

he Do your feet a favor and wear comfortable shoes, such as those from Vionic with Orthaheel technology, the podiatrist-designed footwear and orthotics brand. These shoes will make your feet feel better because of their expert podiatrist engineering. Australian Podiatrist, Phillip Vasyli introduced the Orthaheel brand in 1991 in order to reach a larger audience of people struggling with heel, knee, leg and lower back pain. Orthaheel technology helps reduce over-pronation, which can improve foot function and relieve common associated pains such as plantar fasciitis (heel pain), knee pain and back pain. It is the only footwear recommended by both the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) and integrative medicine doctor, Andrew Weil, MD. Feet were designed to walk on soft, natural surfaces like soil and sand, yet today we spend most of our time standing, walking, and running on unnatural, hard surfaces which force the feet to roll over to gain contact with the ground, which flattens the arches and can disrupt normal knee function and hip alignment and increase pressure on the lower back. The Vionic mission is to help people reclaim their natural alignment to enable their feet, ankles, and knees to function as they naturally would. With men’s and women’s silhouettes ranging from sandals, slippers, wedges, heels and boots, Vionic offers an attractive array of styles that will keep you comfortable and aligned on any adventure you choose.

t. Petersburg was the first American city to hire a public relations director and the first to initiate a successful advertising program. More than almost any other Florida city, St. Petersburg relied on a constant message in postcards, newspaper editorials, print ads and broadcast commercials to market itself as the nation’s playground. By the early 1900s, this sleepy fishing village had become the tourist destination of choice for thousands of winter-weary northerners. Early enthusiasts claimed the sun-filled peninsula was “the southern garden of perpetual well-being.” Historian Nevin D. Sitler presents an entertaining look at the men who crafted the promotion of paradise.

UELSMANN UNTITLED A Retrospective By Jerry N. Uelsmann www.uelsmann.net/

F

or more than five decades, Jerry Uelsmann has sought to transform photography, de-emphasizing its function as a form of documentation, liberating it as a medium capable of re-imagining the real. Widely known as one of the forefathers of the digitally manipulated image, his work has influenced and inspired a broad range of artists and photographers—even as he maintains his strict adherence to purely analog tools to explore “the alchemy of the darkroom.” Uelsmann crafts his images using the integration of multiple negatives and processing effects. Uelsmann Untitled features the largest number of Uelsmann images ever collected in a single volume. Among them are some that have never before been published, several beloved favorites, and many rarely seen images. Drawn from his entire career, they show both the evolution of his technique and the solidity of his vision. Jerry Uelsmann began teaching photography at the University of Florida in Gainesville in 1960 and became a graduate research professor of art at the university in 1974, and is now retired from teaching. He lives in Gainesville, Florida.
