Busch Gardens Tampa’s newest live stage show Opening Night Critters takes the stage this summer in Pantopia Theater. Featuring rescued domestic and exotic animals, including dogs, cats, birds, a horse and a kangaroo, among others, this theatrical tale follows a couple of stage hands as they haphazardly find themselves in the spotlight as the human stars in an all-animal production. The stage hands quickly discover that working with these animals isn’t as easy as they had originally thought. Try as they might, they can’t get their costars to cooperate and when nearly all hope is lost, their kindness and compassion is rewarded when everything falls into place for a fun-filled, furry and feathered finale. www.buschgardens.com/tampa

GECKO PUB CRAWL, GECKO BALL & Gecko Fest

The annual Gecko Pub Crawl will be held August 9th, and a portion of proceeds from all three Gecko events will once again benefit a local non-profit group, as well as the commission of a public art installation. Break out your best “Charleston” dance moves on Sat, August 23. “Roaring Geckos” will be the theme of Gulfport’s Sixth Annual Gecko Ball. The Gecko Ball will be held at the historic waterfront Gulfport Casino Ballroom (5500 Shore Boulevard South) from 6 until 11 pm. The event gets larger and more popular each year, including over the top décor, cocktail specials, cash bar, hors d’oeuvre, a dinner buffet, commemorative photo booth, dozens of silent auction items, and the popular live auction of geckos created by local artists. Once again, a new Gecko Queen will be crowned at the Ball as the Queen and Court are presented to assembled ball-goers. Dress a la 1920’s or dress as a gecko, or combine the two. A costume contest will determine some of the best outfits in the house. (Costumes are encourages but are not mandatory.) Appearing live at this year’s Ball, the Z Street Speakeasy Band will offer dance-floorready tunes from the 20’s through today. There will be many other surprises in store, creating what has become known as Gulfport’s Party of the Year. www.GulfportMA. com. The Gecko Ball occurs one week prior to the annual GeckoFest street festival (August 30th), and each year the Ball’s theme also lends itself to costumes that GeckoFest participants are encouraged to wear and flaunt during the Fest’s walking parade. The 14th Annual Geckofest will take over Gulfport’s scenic waterfront village on Saturday, August 30th, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. along Beach Boulevard. Combining the artistic energy of Gulfport with the colorful flair of Mardi Gras, Geckofest includes live music on two main stages, over 200 art, craft and food vendors, children’s activities, street performers and costumed characters. Largest Progressive Insurance Tampa Boat Show in Six Years! Region’s premier boating event brings hundreds of new boats and on-water fun to Tampa Convention Center & Harbor The 2014 Progressive Insurance Tampa Boat Show, the area’s only in-water boat show and official kick-off to fall boating season, sets sail September 5-7 to showcase the marine industry’s newest boats and accessories and provide aquatic attractions for all ages. Visitors to the Bay Area’s largest boat show can view, board and enjoy one-of-a-kind deals on hundreds of boats from the region’s top dealers and cutting edge marine accessories and electronics. This year’s show, which is sold out and ten percent larger than in 2013, hosts more than 200 exhibitors and 500 boats for sale. “The Progressive Insurance Tampa Boat Show continues to expand, and we’re excited to be offering the largest selection of boats and exhibitors we’ve had since 2008,” said Larry Berryman, show manager. “This growth is a great sign for the industry, which supports nearly 1,500 boating-related businesses in Florida, a state that generated nearly two billion in sales last year. Our Tampa showcase is the best the industry has to offer and we are looking forward to a successful year supporting the region’s marine businesses while providing visitors an ideal setting to discover boating.” According to Berryman, the three-day boat show features activities for anyone interested in the boating lifestyle, from avid fishermen to novice boaters, and families to retirees. “The boat show has a wide range of activities to entertain and educate people of all ages and experience levels, including boating lessons on the Bay and dozens of seminars, plus live entertainment and a relaxing party barge for those looking for some weekend fun on the water.” Attendees can hone their boating skills with one- and three-hour power boating workshops along Tampa Bay through the Discover Boating Hands-On Skills Training Purchase tickets at TampaBoatShow.com at the show box office, or by calling 954-441-3220

Bucs Bits by Barbara McGovern

CHANGES AT ONE BUC PLACE If it’s summer it must mean that football season is starting soon. The Bucs started training camp the end of July. Aside from the heat, it was a welcome sight to see the team back on the field and getting ready to rumble. For anyone who missed it, there have been a lot of new things at One Buc Place. I thing the most important thing is

one or more of them in the Hall of Fame. The Bucs uniforms got an entire new look as part of the revamping. Training camp also saw changes. Hoping to make it more enjoyable for the fans to come out to training camp this year, the times have changed. Instead of noon, most days’ camp starts at 4:30 p.m. That’s welcome since more fans are able to get to the field and enjoy watching the team practice. They have a chance to meet and greet Capt. Fear and the cheerleaders, get the players autographs and take photos. They also got to see some the Buccaneer greats come out, like Derrick Brooks and Warren Sapp. A great crowd came out to Ray Jay when the Bucs had night practice. They were able to see the team plus they got to see fireworks after. Does it get much better then that? Since pre-season games are underway, it will be interesting to see how things shake out. All the Bucs fans are excited to see how far all the changes take the team.

DERRICK BROOKS

the new attitude that you see around there. The most visible change is a new head coach, Mr. Lovie Smith. Then we got a new G.M., Jason Licht, and a lot of new people in the font office. Lovie brought in quite a few coaches that he knows and has worked with over the years. What a delightful man Lovie is. He is an outstanding coach, but is also a very nice person. He has a beautiful family and they are all so happy to be back in Tampa Bay. Lovie knows his football and he explains in a way that everyone can understand—even me— “the old lady in the press box.” He has a great sense of humor and he’s not a off out of the trenches. It gives him a new and different perspective on the situation. I expect we will hear great things from him and his men in the near future. It might take a year or two, but Super Bowl—here we come! The coaching staff isn’t the only thing that’s new. We have a new quarterback and quite a few new players have joined the team. It will be interesting to see who makes it and who doesn’t. Perhaps some day we’ll see 26

If there is someone who deserves to be in the Football Hall of Fame it is Derrick Brooks. This is a man, who since he was a little boy, was taught how to do the right thing. When he was young he wasn’t the biggest kid on the team, but he always played like he was ten feet tall. No matter how the game was going, he played to win. He was never snaky, never showed poor sportsmanship, never embarrassed his family or his team and he never, ever gave up. He always tried to do the right thing and brought this attitude into any locker-room that he was in. His days in the NFL may be over but he still never gives up. What he does he does with a passion. His starting Derrick Brooks Charities, Inc evidences his concern for children. This provides educational opportunities to help young people to develop into the strong leaders of tomorrow. He started the Brooks Bunch and co-funded the Brooks-DeBartolo Collegiate High School. The Brooks Bunch started in 1997 to motivate kids and has gone way beyond that. Rewarding good behavior and good grades has resulted in kids being able to go on educational trips and college tours to NY, Chicago, Atlanta, Washington, and the western U.S. The Bunch has also made two trips to South Africa with Derrick. The Brooks-DeBartolo School opened in 2007 and currently has 400 students where excellence is achieved with high exceptions, collaboration and support. In addition, Derrick is President of the Storm, he is

but his off-the-field accomplishments are even better. He has been the most philanthropic athlete in the Tampa Bay community since joining the team in 1995 and he is still the most active alumni. This man gives new meaning to GREAT MAN. His family must be so proud of him. The Hall of Fame honors him for his playing on the field, and The Ring of Honor, which will be awarded in Sept., honors not only his playing, but honors the man that he is.

REMEMBERING MR. GLAZER

on the board of trustees at Florida State, the board of the Florida Dept. of Ed. Foundation, St. Leo Univ. and the Brooks-DeBartolo Charities, Inc. Derrick has won just about every award an NFL player can get. His on-field accomplishments are amazing

With all the positive things that have gone on with the Bucs so far this season one thing happened that is very sad. Mr. Malcom Glazer passed away recently. Mr Glazer was a wonderful man who did so many positive things for the community. The Bucs will honor his memory by wearing a special patch on their uniforms all season. RIP Mr.Glazer. GO BUCS!!

The Last Night of Ballyhoo Sept 3 - 28 WINNER: 1997 Tony Award and Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Play. Atlanta, Georgia, December 1939. Gone with the Wind is about to premiere on the big screen and Hitler is marching on Poland. Adolph Freitag, his sister Boo, and nieces Lala and Sunny -- a Jewish family so highly assimilated they have a Christmas tree in the front parlor -- are obsessed with preparing for Ballyhoo, a lavish cotillion ball sponsored by their elite country club. Adolph’s employee Joe Farkas is an eligible bachelor and an Eastern European

Jew down from Brooklyn, familiar with prejudice but unable to fathom its existence within his own religious community. His presence prompts college student Sunny to examine intra-ethnic bias, her Jewish identity (or lack thereof), and the beliefs with which she’s been raised. The family gets pulled apart and mended back together with plenty of comedy, romance, and unexpected revelations along the way. “… a delightful comedy freighted with an uncomfortable message.” — New York Post David A. A vanished father. A pill-popping mother. Three sisters harboring shady little secrets. When the large Weston family unexpectedly reunites after Dad disappears, their Oklahoman family homestead explodes in a maelstrom of repressed truths and unsettling secrets. Mix in Violet, the drugged-up, scathingly acidic matriarch, and you’ve got a major new play that unflinchingly—and uproariously—exposes the dark side of the Midwestern American family. With rich insight and brilliant humor, Letts paints a vivid portrait of a Midwestern family at a turning point that is “not-to-be-missed” (Chicago Tribune). Hailed by the New York Times as “hugely entertaining! A ripsnorter full of blistering, funny dialogue, acidetched characterizations and scenes of no-holdsbarred emotional combat.” The fiercely funny and bitingly sad “August” is a turbo-charged tragicomedy that is a feast for actors and audiences alike. A large portion of women on the streets come from abusive pasts and broken homes leaving them powerless to control the downward spirals of their lives. See how thin the veil is between being normal and being homeless, because it can happen to anyone. The evening will also further tie in the theme of homelessness with a gallery of paintings by Ben Love, a previously homeless artist, and music from The Open Door Band, comprised of homeless and previously homeless musicians.

Welcome Michael Francis – New Music Director

T

he Florida Orchestra’s upcoming season is full of excitement with concerts featuring Ben Folds, Yo-Yo Ma, The Music of the Rolling Stones and Carmina Burana, among many other offerings. However, a big part of the excitement is that the orchestra has recently selected British conductor Michael Francis as its new music director. This decision was the culmination of a three-year search process with 17 guest conductors in multiple performances leading the orchestra in a variety of music. Francis has a fascinating background as a versatile musician with a can-do attitude. He was a double bass player in the London Symphony Orchestra for several years, when he offered to jump onto the podium to conduct a rehearsal for a conductor who was delayed. Travel delays and illnesses presented this situation a few more times, and Michael Francis was there to save the day, not only in rehearsals but also in performances. Before you knew it, he was guest conducting around Europe and the US. Part of his journey included stepping in for indisposed conductors such as André Previn and even John Adams on a few days or even on a few hours notice, and making a reputation for himself with the likes of the San Francisco, Houston, Seattle and Vancouver symphonies, among numerous others. Michael Francis was a big hit with Florida Orchestra audiences and, of course, with the orchestra itself. In addition to being a musician’s musician who played for many years in a world-class orchestra and who has a deep knowledge of the orchestral repertoire, Francis excelled as an engaging communicator and a charismatic individual. All this and a few other intangibles made it immediately apparent that there was a chemistry happening between the conductor and the orchestra, and Michael Francis was the unanimous choice to be the new music director. Audiences can enjoy this chemistry at Francis’ first concerts on October 24 - 26, featuring Concertmaster Jeffrey Multer as the soloist in Barber’s gorgeous Violin Concerto on a program with Elgar’s majestic Symphony No. 1. But before that, Francis and his wife, who grew up here in Tampa Bay, will be looking for a home in the area for themselves and their first child, expected this December. The community is invited to give Michael Francis a warm welcome this season. Find out about the orchestra’s many Masterworks, Pops, Rock, Coffee and Special concerts from October through May in Tampa, St. Petersburg and Clearwater. Most concerts offer affordable single-ticket prices of $15, $30 and $45, which go on sale August 11. TRAVELOGUE

The

Southampton Inn A Classic Inn on Long Island

Story and photos by Melissa Wolcott Martino

W

When I was a child, every year my family would summer in the Hamptons on Long Island, NY. We stayed at the same beautiful beachfront property. Before you imagine the tony mansions you see on the “Lives of the Rich and Famous” it wasn’t quite like that. Actually, it was nothing like that. It was the 1950s and my family of four pitched a tent on the beach at Hither Hills State Park on Montauk Point, and would shop or take in an occasional movie in the Hamptons. They were the best of times. What made it even more enjoyable was that we went camping with our same dear friends every year. They too, we’re a family of four, same ages. Fast forward 60 years. Although both sets of our parents are gone now, my fellow camper, Lea Seligman, is still my best friend. We have managed to maintain this friendship even though we have been separated by many years and many miles. We decided it was time to take a “nostalgic” trip back to the Hamptons that we loved so much as children. We left our husbands and families home and searched for the ideal place to stay. The gracious South Hampton Inn turned out to be the perfect choice. Comfortable and centrally located, it was easy to get around and explore the east end of Long Island.

The Southampton Inn is over 40 years old, but has been refurbished to include modern amenities while retaining a cozy, homey feel. Current owner Dede Gotthelf Moan has owned it for 16 years and is very hands-on. The Inn has a beautifully manicured spacious lawn, with lots of flowering plants and a tall privacy hedge around the property — perfect for relaxing and reading a book in the Adirondack chairs that dot the property. The lobby is also a nice place to relax or chat up friends in comfy chairs by the fireplace.

The Inn’s spacious lawn. You never know who’s going to hop by while relaxing in the yard.

The Inn is the largest one in South Hampton with 90 individually designed guestrooms. Our double queen guestroom had a casual décor with very comfortable Tempur-Pedic mattresses and down comforters, and overlooked the pool and nearby tennis court. Although we left them at home, we found we could have also brought our pets along, since the Inn has 18 pet-friendly guestrooms. We were also glad to discover complimentary Wi-Fi was available throughout the inn.

The Southampton Inn

T

The Southampton Inn’s restaurant, Café OSO, uses locally sourced food, with fresh picked vegetables and herbs coming from their own garden, and is highly rated in the area. We enjoyed breakfast at the Inn before we headed out to explore. The Inn is located on a quiet street, and just a short walk takes you to the Southampton Village of many wonderful little shops, galleries and restaurants. One evening we dined at 75 Main, a chic spot with soft lighting and an elegant menu. We heard it’s also a favorite stop for visiting celebrities. www.75main.com When staying at the Southapton Inn, guests can leave their cars behind and avail themselves of the many bicycles the Inn has for rent. They also have a shuttle that will take guests to Cooper Beach, only a mile away. Lea and I set out to revisit our childhood haunts (what we could remember of them.) We were pleasantly surprised to see that Hither Hills State Park is very much like it was 60 years ago, only perhaps more RVs than tents now. The beautiful 200 year-old Montauk Point Lighthouse still guides ships as it did in George Washington’s day — with a bit of modernization. Although the Hamptons are thought of as a summer retreat, there are a lot of things happening throughout the year. The 4th of July is, of course, the biggest weekend, but Halloween is fun, and Christmas time is gorgeous. Carolers stroll the streets, and there is a candlelight tour of beautiful homes. With all the cedar shake houses, it is very reminiscent of a Norman Rockwell painting in the winter. Saturday nights, from October to May is the popular “Rising Star” Piano Concert Series which takes place in the Southampton Cultural Center. There are plenty of events taking place every weekend, which you can check out at the Hamptons website.

The Inn’s lobby is cozy and relaxing. 64

WOK CHI

Brandon’s Chinese Gem

E

verybody loves Chinese food. Well, at least most people do. There is a wonderful gem of a casual Chinese restaurant in Regency Square in Brandon that serves fresh healthy pan-regional food – YOUR way. At Wok Chi, diners get to choose from a wide array of foodstuffs to create their very own stir fries, made right before their eyes. Your Wok Chi dining journey begins with choosing your protein (chicken, pork, beef, shrimp, tofu, or just veggies), then your sauce — such as BBQ black bean, kung pao, sweet & sour, etc). Next, it’s on to picking any four vegetables (out of nine), and then a base (different rices or noodles). Stir fry prices are so reasonable for all the scrumptious food you get, ranging from $7.45 for tofu, to $8.95 for shrimp. You can add on to that with dim sum, beverages, dessert, and more. Wok Chi also has a “Green Tea Initiative”, where they welcome their guests with a complimentary cup of hot, organic, freshly brewed green to give them a little extra joy in their day. The Chinese tradition of welcoming guests into one’s home is an expression of gratitude and hospitality. (CHI is the term for the universal energy, or the energy that permeates everything around us.) Green tea is “good” chi. Wok Chi takes their green tea initiative to community outreach programs, gardens, fundraisers and food drives. When I dined there, they had just finished raising money for ECHO (Emergency Care Help Organization), Brandon, and presented them with a welcomed check for $2,655. ECHO is a food pantry and clothing

Wok Chi is a fun, interactive experience for the whole family, but has fast enough service for the busy business person who wants a fresh made, helathy meal. The restaurant also offers a loyalty rewards card, My Chi. You earn points for every dollar you spend, which can be redeemed for meals. Sounds like “good chi to me.

TRAVELOGUE

St. Francis Inn Bed & Breakfast Inn with a Long History in St. Augustine, FL Story and photos by Melissa Wolcott Martino and Al Martino

S t. Augustine, America’s oldest city, also has the richest and most fascinating history, with the flags of five countries having flown over it since 1513 starting with Spain. The French came next (1564), then Great Britain (1763), Spain again (1784), The United States (1821) the Confederacy, briefly (1861), and back to the United States in 1865. (Hopefully to remain for the rest of time.)

S t. Augustine should be on everyone’s bucket list for a visit, as it is unlike any other city in the USA. To experience the old world charm of the city, we highly recommend a stay at the city’s oldest inn — the St. Francis Inn — which is located in the heart of the historic district. Built in 1791, it has seen a lot of changes in it’s city and weathered many storms to remain the wonderful inn it is today.

f course, through the years the inn has gone through a lot of changes itself. Originally built by the Gaspar Garcia family, the home is constructed of 18” thick “coquina” limestone walls (compacted particles of seashells) which was easily found in the area, and was very prevalent in the day. It is still found today in most of the period structures throughout St. Augustine. The old fort, Castillo de San Marcos (1672), is made of coquina which was a good foundation for it as it is soft, so a shot cannonball would just sink into the walls rather than shattering them.

O

Francis Inn’s most famous ghost (whose room you can stay in on the third floor.) We stayed in the Garcia Suite, directly across from Lily’s, which also has it own ghost story. Quite a number of ghost hunters have visited the inn through the years, and have witnessed activity for themselves first hand. All experienced paranormal activity has been described as friendly or mischievous rather than frightening. The owners themselves have never seen Lily in their 30 years at the inn. Our visit concluded with nary a ghostly apparition. I don’t know if that makes me feel relieved or deprived!

t. Francis Inn’s original house was laid out according to orders by the King of Spain to the citizens of St. Augustine. Homes were constructed directly on the street with front entrances shielded to provide a defense from invasion. At the St. Francis, you step into a delightful side courtyard to enter the inn. There is a recorded history of the different owners through the years to the present day. An inn since 1845, it has always maintained the reputation as being one of the best in the area. A third floor was added in 1888 as well as some property across the street, which is also part of the inn today. It also had different names through the years, settling on the St. Francis Inn in 1948.

E

S

he current owners are Margaret and Joe Finnegan, who are very hands on, and have lovingly preserved the inn’s old world ambiance while adding modern touches and comfort. They are very welcoming and will regale you with tales from the inn’s history — including, of course, ghosts! Ask about Miss Lily, the St.

T

ach of the St. Francis Inn’s 11 guest rooms and suites are unique and all are very homey. Some of the guest rooms have such amenities as private balconies, rockers, and whirlpool tubs. After visiting the check in desk in the foyer, the first time we walked up the stairs to our suite, we reflected on all the folks who had passed this way over the 200 plus years of the house — such a sense of history! It’s a bit thrilling walk the same halls as Mr. Garcia did all those many years ago. I must stress that although the inn is very old, the amenities are not. Beds are very comfortable, bathrooms have new fixtures that fit in with the old world feel, plush robes are in every guest room, high-speed internet is found throughout the inn, there’s a solarheated swimming pool, complimentary guest bicycles to tool around old town on, a lovely courtyard to relax or enjoy a beverage. An unexpected touch was the fresh flowers and sherry we found in our guest room upon arrival.

hich now brings us to the breakfast part of “Bed and Breakfast”. The St. Francis serves up a delightful homemade breakfast buffet which is different every day, and includes at least two hot entrees, fruit, freshly baked breads, coffee and assorted teas. You can enjoy your breakfast in your room, on a balcony, in the courtyard or in the dining room (oldest part of the inn dating to 1791) where you can meet other guests. Weekend days have special brunches, as do holidays. There are complimentary specialty coffees all day long in the front room of the inn, and from 5-6 pm, guests can partake of a social hour in the courtyard with different appetizers daily. From 8-9:30 pm you won’t want to miss the evening homemade desserts with beverages.

The staff at the inn are very accommodating, and can assist and provide guests with any special event needs, such as gift baskets, picnic baskets, massage arrangements, etc. Wouldn’t you and your significant other love to be picked up at the inn by horse-drawn carriage and take a tour of the old city? It can be arranged! nother great plus of the inn is its location in the old city. Some of the best St. Augustine sight-seeing is walkable from the St. Francis, which is situated on the corner of St. George and St. Francis Streets. Across the street from the inn is the oldest house in St. Augustine, the González-Alvarez House. The site is from the 1600s and the present house is from the early 1700s. Here you can see the furnishings of the different occupations (Spanish, British, and American) and how the residents lived. Besides the many historical homes, are the unique shops, restaurants and museums in the old city. We really enjoyed the Pirate & Treasure Museum which is cleverly laid out and teeming with fascinating objects and terrible tales of life on the high seas. Looking out in the harbor when we came out of the museum, we were amazed to see a Spanish Galleon (The El Galeón, a 175foot replica) sailing into the harbor. Great timing! We spent quite a bit of time in the fascinating Colonial Quarter, a 2-acre living history experience covering the 16th to 18th centuries of St. Augustine. The best way to familiarize yourself with St. Augustine’s history and attractions is to take the Old Town Trolley, which gives you an overview of points of interest, and lets you hop on and off at your leisure.

here are a lot of really good — and non-chain! — restaurants in Old Town and we visited several of them during our stay. All were quite enjoyable and will be revisited on our next trip to St. Augustine. The Bistro de Leon brings a touch of France to St. Augustine, under the expert helm of Chef Jean-Stephane Poinard. His Flounder with Hollandaise Lemon Sauce and Asparagus was exceptional. In the Colonial Quarter we found the Taberna Del Caballo, which maintains the theme of the Spanish and British occupations. Wait staff is in period costume, and the kitchen is old style with no fryers and no grill. Food is Florida sourced and fresh baked. We sampled the delectable Marinated Beer Steamed Shrimp, and Crostini with Smoked Cheddar Cheese and Caramelized Onions. Meehan’s Irish Pub is one of St. Augustine’s most popular restaurants, not only for the food, but also for its location on Charlotte St. overlooking the Matanzas River. We had a 5-course dinner with Duck Confit, Saffron Steeped Shellfish, Park Shank Lollipops, Slow Braised Ox Tail, topped off by a Double Chocolate Baileys Bread Pudding. Yes, it was delicious!

among artworks that might not otherwise be exhibited together. This series examines western representations of children and childhood objects from the Eighteenth Century until the present. The media presented is diverse, from Winslow Homer’s illustrations of children and their activities from Harper’s Weekly to Polixeni Papapetrou’s contemporary restaging of Lewis Carroll’s Victorian photographs of costumed children. The selection of artworks demonstrates historical representations of the role of children as well as conceptual approaches that utilize childhood and its objects for other explorations, as in the work of Harold Edgerton, Ruth Bernhard and Suzanne Camp Crosby (photo displayed here). The role of the child within societies has varied greatly through the years. Puritans believed that children are inherently wicked, while Rousseau’s concept of natural moral purity was popularized during the Enlightenment. The Victorian era focused on education 106

This exhibition of photographs by Ernest “Red” Hallen (1875–1947) commemorates the Panama Canal’s Centennial and focuses on the dramatic changes to the area during its construction. Hallen was appointed the official photographer by the Isthmian Canal Commission (ICC). He produced more than 16,000 images during his 30-year career. Hallen’s images are more than mere documents. Until his retirement in 1937, Hallen’s views were the primary means by which Americans and the world experienced the great engineering feat. The works in this exhibition date from 1904 to 1915. Images of the Culebra Cut (or Gaillard Cut) comprise the bulk of Hallen’s work in the MFA’s holdings. Engineers and workers carved out a valley through the Cul-

ebra mountain ridge linking Gatun Lake and the Gulf of Panama, and the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. In addition to the Culebra Cut, there are also photographs of the construction of the Gatun, Miraflores, and Pedro Miguel locks, which raise and lower ships between the main elevation of the Canal and sea level. Photographs of the tugboat Gatun, the first to traverse the Gatun locks on September 26, 1913, demonstrate the excitement surrounding the complex project. A Different Frame of Mind - West Gallery CAM invited artists to produce new works designed to use recycled picture frames made available by the museum as part of ongoing efforts to find new methods for sharing resources and creative capital with the community. A selection committee selected proposals that fully embraced the spirit of the open call and presented the most innovative uses for the repurposed frames. From June 16 to June 24, the USFCAM West Gallery will be transformed into studio space available for the selected artists to work, with the public invited to

witness the creation of these new works. The process and development of each piece will be documented until the works are completed. On June 25 and June 26, USFCAM will host framing and art hanging workshops as new works are closed into the recycled frames and put on display. On June 27 the studio space will then revert to a gallery space for the duration of the exhibition. Artists in the exhibition include Ariel Baron-Robbins, Mike Covello, Derek Curry and Jennifer Gradecki, David Gabbard, Janet Pulido, and Sam Robinson. Curated by Vincent Kral, USFCAM; organized by USF Contemporary Art Museum. Richard Beckman: Outside the Curve of Reason - Lee & Victor Leavengood Gallery + Genevieve Lykes Dimmitt Lobby Gallery This exhibition features sculptures by Richard Beckman (1957-2004) from Florida collections. Beckman’s organic and geometric forms in human scale investigate the dynamic balance between mind and body, and the synthesis of this duality through materials and process. Exposing the ambiguity between the inner and outer, order and chaos, positive and negative, Beckman’s work, when grouped together, creates unique relationships and dialogues between the forms as bodies. Richard Beckman was an Associate Professor of Art at USF College of The Arts from 1991 to 2004 and received national recognition for his exhibitions in New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles. Curated by Sarah Howard, USF Institute for Research in Art; organized by USF Contemporary Art Museum. http://ira.usf.edu/

LONE WOMAN OF THE HIGHWAYMEN AT THE CARROLLWOOD CULTURAL CENTER in August

Artist Mary Ann Carroll, the sole woman in the group of artists knows as the Florida Highwaymen will exhibit her work in the Gallery at Carrollwood Cultural Center in August. Born in 1940 into a family of sharecroppers,

Carroll’s family moved to Fort Pierce, Florida when she was eight. It was there Carroll had the opportunity to watch Harold Newton paint. Inspired by Newton’s work, she joined the ragtag bunch of artists, bringing a gifted way of looking at color to the group. Many of her Carroll’s paintings are painted in usual manner for Highwaymen artists – on Upson board, with crown molding as a frame. She is one of the few Highwaymen that learned to mix colors to enhance details. She still uses a kitchen spoon to mix oils – a Highwaymen trademark. www.CarrollwoodCenter.org

Looking Good... Vionic

Restore Natural Foot Function

T

www.vionicshoes.com

he Do your feet a favor and wear comfortable shoes, such as those from Vionic with Orthaheel technology, the podiatrist-designed footwear and orthotics brand. These shoes will make your feet feel better because of their expert podiatrist engineering. Australian Podiatrist, Phillip Vasyli introduced the Orthaheel brand in 1991 in order to reach a larger audience of people struggling with heel, knee, leg and lower back pain. Orthaheel technology helps reduce over-pronation, which can improve foot function and relieve common associated pains such as plantar fasciitis (heel pain), knee pain and back pain. It is the only footwear recommended by both the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) and integrative medicine doctor, Andrew Weil, MD. Feet were designed to walk on soft, natural surfaces like soil and sand, yet today we spend most of our time standing, walking, and running on unnatural, hard surfaces which force the feet to roll over to gain contact with the ground, which flattens the arches and can disrupt normal knee function and hip alignment and increase pressure on the lower back. The Vionic mission is to help people reclaim their natural alignment to enable their feet, ankles, and knees to function as they naturally would. With men’s and women’s silhouettes ranging from sandals, slippers, wedges, heels and boots, Vionic offers an attractive array of styles that will keep you comfortable and aligned on any adventure you choose.

lowouts. Nails. Waxing. Body By Blo has come to Tampa. This globally fast growing Beauty Bar franchise does not offer hair color nor cuts. They are in the business of making their customers look (and feel) great for that special occasion or just a mid-work day freshening in a short amount of time, and at an affordable price. I stopped in recently for a Body Pedi, which was both relaxing and quick. The Beauty Bar is very attractive – warm greys and white with pops of hot pink under soft indirect lighting. Franchise Partner Cynthia Keenan graciously described their services and product lines, which feature Morgan Taylor and Gelish for nails, and Unite products for hair. Hair services include blowouts, braids, updos – you name it. Waxing is also the full range. And you gotta love being greeted with “Hello Gorgeous” splashed across the nail salon wall. The company’s recent partnering with actress Gwyneth Paltrow and celebrity hairdresser, David Babaii, should boost Blo’s beauty cred even further, with Babaii lending his expertise to their creative approach. Blo services women, men and children alike, and is a fun place to celebrate bachelorette parties, birthdays, and girls night outs. The Tampa location is handily located at 4102-2 West Boy Scout Boulevard in the MetWest complex near the International Mall and a lot of businesses and hotels. It is open 7 days a week. t. Petersburg was the first American city to hire a public relations director and the first to initiate a successful advertising program. More than almost any other Florida city, St. Petersburg relied on a constant message in postcards, newspaper editorials, print ads and broadcast commercials to market itself as the nation’s playground. By the early 1900s, this sleepy fishing village had become the tourist destination of choice for thousands of winter-weary northerners. Early enthusiasts claimed the sun-filled peninsula was “the southern garden of perpetual well-being.” Historian Nevin D. Sitler presents an entertaining look at the men who crafted the promotion of paradise.

UELSMANN UNTITLED A Retrospective By Jerry N. Uelsmann www.uelsmann.net/

F

or more than five decades, Jerry Uelsmann has sought to transform photography, de-emphasizing its function as a form of documentation, liberating it as a medium capable of re-imagining the real. Widely known as one of the forefathers of the digitally manipulated image, his work has influenced and inspired a broad range of artists and photographers—even as he maintains his strict adherence to purely analog tools to explore “the alchemy of the darkroom.” Uelsmann crafts his images using the integration of multiple negatives and processing effects. Uelsmann Untitled features the largest number of Uelsmann images ever collected in a single volume. Among them are some that have never before been published, several beloved favorites, and many rarely seen images. Drawn from his entire career, they show both the evolution of his technique and the solidity of his vision. Jerry Uelsmann began teaching photography at the University of Florida in Gainesville in 1960 and became a graduate research professor of art at the university in 1974, and is now retired from teaching. He lives in Gainesville, Florida.

With Spain, Italy and France, the charcuterie traditions of Spain are perhaps the least understood. Americans have most likely never tasted the deliciousness of cured Spanish meats: chorizo, the garlic-and-pimentón-spiked ambassador of Spanish cuisine; morcilla, the family of blood sausages flavoring regional cuisine from Barcelona to Badajoz; and jamón, the acorn-scented, crown jewel of Spain’s charcutería legacy.
