Bucs Bits by Barbara McGovern

better, but to lose because you were dumb and shot yourselves in the foot, sorry, there is no excuse for that. The organization has spent a lot of money to give the fans a great, new experience. The players need to do their part and at least play up to their pay grade

THE BUCS ARE BACK!

Fall is the air so I guess it’s time for football. The Bucs are back and there are so many things that are new this year. There is a new head coach, Mr. Lovie Smith. I think everyone likes that choice, new uniforms and a new quarterback — the jury’s still out on that one. Lots of new fan experiences, definitely a winner.

New lighting and new seats, great, but the best thing is the new food that is available in Ray Jay. Local favorites like made-to-order Cubans, a new Bocadillo ham sandwich, sweet potato fries and yucca fries (My favorite), hot pastrami, nachos and house fried tortillas, and local craft beers. Not your typical stadium food. I know, there isn’t much health food, but hey guys, you’re at a football game. O.K. I guess I have to go there. Have things been ugly? Yes sir, here we go again. Do you feel like you’ve been there, done that? That Atlanta game, 58-14? Yikes, that was a mess. But in the next game the Bucs did come back, and life was good again, UNTIL… New Orleans. The voodoo got us. D-m, D-m, D-m! Are you kidding? 15, count them, 15 penalties for a loss of 113 yards. I’m sorry. There is no excuse for that lack of discipline. These are supposed to be highly paid professionals, but you wouldn’t have thought so after that. It’s one thing to lose because you don’t have the coaching and the talent or because the other team was so much 36

DERRICK BROOKS

Let’s go on to positive stuff now. How about Derrick Brooks? Derrick was inducted into the Bucs Ring of Honor on Sept. 14, 2014. This was just a few weeks after he was inducted into the Football Hall of Fame. Derrick deserves all the accolades and many more. As great a football player he was, he is an even better person. His work within the community and his work with, and for, children has endeared him in the Tampa Bay area. His work as been honored by his peers for several years. Some of his awards include: 2000 - Walter Payton NFL man of the year; 2003 - the Bart Starr award; 2004 - The Wizzer White NFL man of the year; 2007 - Citizen of the Year by the Tampa Sports Club. There are more, but we don’t want him to a get a swelled head, do we? In 1997 he formed the Brooks Bunch to work with the Boys and Girls Clubs to encourage the children to excel in the classroom. Derrick graduated from FSU with a 3.9 GPA and with a 3.83 from grad school. He understands the value of an education and he wants to pass that on to kids. While still playing with the Bucs, Derrick and Eddie DeBartolo, former S.F.49 owner, founded the Brooks-DeBartolo Collegiate High. This past year the most recent graduating class received well over a million in scholarships. This is the lesson that these kids are learning from Derrick and Eddie. In 2011 Derrick became co-owner and president of the Tampa Bay Storm. Under Derrick’s guidance I’m sure we will see great things from the Storm in the very near future. A great D.B.story: Just after he got out of FSU, a friend asked him to invest $35,000 in a tee shirt company. He never saw a dime from that investment but it taught him a very valuable lesson. He immediately began to educate himself in financial matters. “I thank God it cost me $35,000. It probably saved me millions.”

THE BUCS IN THE COMMUNITY

The Bucs might not be doing as well as we hoped on the field, but in the Community they are still in first place. Every week the area benefits because of what the Bucs do for the Tampa Bay area. Before every game the Bucs continue a game day tradition by honoring the teams military “Hero of the Game.” A military service member is stationed on the Pirate Ship to ring the bell and ready the team for battle. At every home game, the team honors a distinguished group of military members in the Salute To Service Suite. Fans are encouraged to join players and coaches during a break in play to thank the local servicemen and servicewomen for their sacrifices. The Bucs once again bring Kids Zone to Ray Jay. The Kids Zone includes inflatable football activities, the Glazer Family Vision Mobile and interactive football drills for children to enjoy free of charge to showcase the teams commitment to the NFL PLAY 60 campaign the encourages youth activity for at least 60 minutes a day. On Oct. 12, fans can join the Bucs in the fight against breast cancer. The 2nd Annual Treasure Chests 5k Run/Walk & Corporate Challenge will be held before the game against the Ravens. The run will go around Ray Jay. Day-of-race registration is available subject to availability. Fee includes a ticket to the Ravens game,

a t-shirt, chipped race bib, donation to cancer research, on field halftime experience for the first 500 entrants and an opportunity to win medals. Let’s not give up on the Bucs. I know they can make us all crazy but remember — they are our Bucs and we really do love them, in spite of themselves. Good luck to all the Treasure Chest folks and GO BUCS!

VAMPIRE LESBIANS OF SODOM Oct 29 - Nov 3

One of the longest running plays in OffBroadway history, Vampire Lesbians of Sodom tells the saga of two fatally seductive vampiresses, a virgin sacrifice (Coco & Homo’s Zachary Hines) and her maker (veteran Jobsiteer Summer Bohnenkamp), whose paths first collide in ancient Sodom. Their bitter rivalry endures for nearly two thousand years with stops along the way in 1920’s silent movie Hollywood and contemporary Las Vegas. Moving between histrionics of classic horror cinema and the cheerful

During the 70’s the American painter Jamie Wyeth (son of Andrew) did a series of studies and paintings of Rudolf Nureyev, the legendary ballet dancer who defected from Russia and revitalized western ballet. BORN TO RIDE JAM Saturday, November 1

The Born to Ride Jam, featuring Bachman & Turner, Billy Squier, Lou Gramm (The Voice of Foreigner), Blue Oyster Cult, Foghat, Molly Hachet and many more is coming to rock Pinellas Park on Saturday, November 1st. Randy Bachman and Fred Turner are the namesakes of Bachman Turner Overdrive, the seminal multiplatinum rock outfit that stormed the charts with “Taking Care of Business” and “You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet” Billy Squier is the rocker responsible for turning 1980s radios into auditory arenas with the hits “The Stroke,” “Lonely is the Night,” and “In the Dark” Lou Gramm possesses one of the great hard rock voices, and rose from small beginnings to fame and fortune with Foreigner. Rocking since the 1970s with hits including “(Don’t) Fear the Reaper” and “Godzilla,” Blue Oyster Cult enjoyed a resurgence thanks to an SNL sketch starring a belly-baring Will Ferrell and a cowbell-obsessed Christopher Walken. Foghat is the epitome of ‘70s arena rock thanks to bluesy, boogying riffs that led to eight gold records, one platinum album, and a string of hits including “Slow Ride,” “Fool for the City,” and “I Just Wanna Make Love to You” With song titles such as “Whiskey Man,” “Beatin’ the Odds,” and “American Pride,” it’s no secret where Molly Hatchet’s heart lies: in the shade of a big rig stranded in the deep south. You may recognize Preacher Stone’s song, “Not Today,” from FX’s Sons of Anarchy, which helped put the Southern rockers on the map. The Swedish band Amaranthe’s music is generally considered a mixture of European power metal and melodic metal, containing elements of pop music, metalcore, and even eurodance. Pick Your Favorites with a Compose Your Own Series

ith concerts starting in October, The Florida Orchestra’s new season is just around the corner. In addition to the proverbial “something for everyone,” including concerts from Rachmaninoff to Rock, Mozart to Mambos, Beethoven to Ben Folds and Carmina Burana to Christmas carols, the orchestra has announced British conductor Michael Francis as its new music director designate. Francis will be moving into the community shortly, and he and his wife are expecting their first child this December. The Florida Orchestra offers several concert series, the main ones being the Tampa Bay Times Masterworks and the Raymond James Pops, which between them offer 23 fantastic concert experiences to choose from. However, if you are not partial to one of the fixed series packages, the orchestra actually encourages you to build your own series with a Compose Your Own package. This allows you to mix and match any combination of three or more Masterworks and Pops to fit your tastes and calendar. If you love piano concertos, you might pick Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 1, Saint-Saen’s Piano Concerto No. 2 and Bartok’s Piano Concerto No. 3. For fans of classic pop songs, you might want to pick “Vegas and The Rat Pack,” “Nat King Cole Songbook” and “Judy Garland Tribute.” If you want some classics and pops, maybe the perfect mix in Orff’s choral extravaganza Carmina Burana, “Star Wars & More” and Holst’s The Planets with big screen images shot by the Hubble Telescope. Whatever your tastes might be, live music is always nearby with concerts in Tampa, St. Petersburg and Clearwater, and Compose Your Own is affordable at just $25 per ticket when you order three or more concerts. The orchestra also offers a wonderful morning concert experience with its Coffee Concert series in St. Petersburg and Clearwater. In addition to leading the orchestra, Tony Award winner and Principal Guest Conductor Stuart Malina is an animated host of this series, sharing fun and insightful commentary about the music, and is even the piano soloist at times. Concertgoers enjoy complimentary coffee and doughnuts prior to curtain time for these varied programs of familiar favorites by Tchaikovsky, Brahms, Rossini, Rachmaninoff, Mozart and other masters. Find out about the orchestra’s many Masterworks, Pops, Rock, Coffee and Special concerts from October through May in Tampa, St. Petersburg and Clearwater. Most concerts offer affordable single-ticket prices of $15, $30 and $45. For a free season brochure or to order a series package or single tickets, visit www. floridaorchestra.org or call 727.892.3337 or 1.800.662.7286, Mon-Fri, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sat & Sun, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

WOK CHI

Brandon’s Chinese Gem

E

verybody loves Chinese food. Well, at least most people do. There is a wonderful gem of a casual Chinese restaurant in Regency Square in Brandon that serves fresh healthy pan-regional food – YOUR way. At Wok Chi, diners get to choose from a wide array of foodstuffs to create their very own stir fries, made right before their eyes. Your Wok Chi dining journey begins with choosing your protein (chicken, pork, beef, shrimp, tofu, or just veggies), then your sauce — such as BBQ black bean, kung pao, sweet & sour, etc). Next, it’s on to picking any four vegetables (out of nine), and then a base (different rices or noodles). Stir fry prices are so reasonable for all the scrumptious food you get, ranging from $7.45 for tofu, to $8.95 for shrimp. You can add on to that with dim sum, beverages, dessert, and more. Wok Chi also has a “Green Tea Initiative”, where they welcome their guests with a complimentary cup of hot, organic, freshly brewed green to give them a little extra joy in their day. The Chinese tradition of welcoming guests into one’s home is an expression of gratitude and hospitality. (CHI is the term for the universal energy, or the energy that permeates everything around us.) Green tea is “good” chi. Wok Chi takes their green tea initiative to community outreach programs, gardens, fundraisers and food drives. When I dined there, they had just finished raising money for ECHO (Emergency Care Help Organization), Brandon, and presented them with a welcomed check for $2,655. ECHO is a food pantry and clothing

Wok Chi is a fun, interactive experience for the whole family, but has fast enough service for the busy business person who wants a fresh made, helathy meal. Still Hoop Dee Doo-ing Since 1974! Story and photos by Melissa Wolcott Martino and Al Martino

F

orty years ago, the Walt Disney Worldw folks put together a “Hoop-Dee-Doo” Musical Revue at their Fort Wilderness Resort and Campgound that was supposed to last for 3 months. The original cast was made up of summer college interns. They quickly realized they had struck gold since that show is still going strong with just a little tweaking through the years. Some of the original cast are still with the Disney World organization in different capacities. The venerable foot-stompin’, hand-clappin’ hootenanny-style show has been entertaining families with music, laughs and down-home cooking, and is one of the longest running dinner theaters in the US. The actors may have changed through the years, but the characters remain the same — Six Bits Slocum, Jim Handy, Johnny Ringo, Dolly Drew, Flora Long and Clair de Lune. The rustic wild west Pioneer Hall seats 360 people, with a main floor and balcony. We met people there who return every year at the same time, and wouldn’t miss a Hoop-Dee-Doo evening. The menu is really tasty with fried chicken, BBQ ribs, mashed potatoes, baked beans, salad, fresh baked cornbread, and finishing up with strawberry shortcake. The meats and veggies are served family style, and there’s plenty of it. The cornbread was particularly memorable, as we went back for seconds ...and thirds! The stage characters do a lot of interacting and mingling with the audience, and are very quickwitted, leading to lots of laughter when they pick out certain people to have fun with. It’s hard to imagine they can do this energetic show three times a night, but they do, seven nights a week. At Fort Wilderness, the Circle D Ranch is home to many of the Disney World horses and ponies, which are used in the parades, weddings, and for pony rides. We strolled through the barn and saw some of the beautiful horses up close. To get in the mood before the Hoop Dee Doo dinner show, we took a ride in a horse-draw wagon and took in the sights of the Fort Wilderness Resort and Campgrounds, where we saw quite a few free roaming wild life (deer, wild turkeys, rabbits, etc.) Hoop Dee Doo is so popular, chances of just being able to pop in are slim. You would do well to make reservations way in advance. Prices for dinner and show including beer, wine and sangria, range from $54.99 to $69.99 for adults over age 21, and including soft drinks for over age 10. Ages 3 to 9 prices range from $27.99 to $35.99. Price range depends on show time, date and seating. (407) 827-2253; www.disneyworld.disney.go.com/dining/

Looking Good... Vionic

Restore Natural Foot Function

T

www.vionicshoes.com

he Do your feet a favor and wear comfortable shoes, such as those from Vionic with Orthaheel technology, the podiatrist-designed footwear and orthotics brand. These shoes will make your feet feel better because of their expert podiatrist engineering. Australian Podiatrist, Phillip Vasyli introduced the Orthaheel brand in 1991 in order to reach a larger audience of people struggling with heel, knee, leg and lower back pain. Orthaheel technology helps reduce over-pronation, which can improve foot function and relieve common associated pains such as plantar fasciitis (heel pain), knee pain and back pain. It is the only footwear recommended by both the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) and integrative medicine doctor, Andrew Weil, MD. Feet were designed to walk on soft, natural surfaces like soil and sand, yet today we spend most of our time standing, walking, and running on unnatural, hard surfaces which force the feet to roll over to gain contact with the ground, which flattens the arches and can disrupt normal knee function and hip alignment and increase pressure on the lower back. The Vionic mission is to help people reclaim their natural alignment to enable their feet, ankles, and knees to function as they naturally would. With men’s and women’s silhouettes ranging from sandals, slippers, wedges, heels and boots, Vionic offers an attractive array of styles that will keep you comfortable and aligned on any adventure you choose.

n spite of some of the kitchy stuff you have seen through the years, the Marilyn Monroe estate is very protective of her image, so I was quite surprised when I heard about the new Marilyn Monroe Glamour Room opening up in the Sundial complex in downtown St. Petersburg. Apparently, the estate had a lot of faith and confidence in founder and CEO Niki T. Bryan when deciding to team up with her for this endeavor. Of course Ms. Bryan does have beaucoup experience in running salons since she has had her Niki Bryan Spas in finer resorts across the country such as Ritz-Carlton, Walt Disney World, Marriott and Hilton. I always liked Marilyn Monroe. She projected a sweet vulnerability. Women wanted to mother her and men wanted to… well… Curiosity got the best of me, and I just had to experience the MM Glamour Room. I set up an appointment for manicure, pedicure, “fassage” (explanation coming) and a blow dry. The Salon is very “Marilyn” in a classy minimalist sort of way. Clean lines, pale grays and whites, and pops of red with iconic photos of Marilyn sprinkled throughout. Large flat screen wall mounted TV sets show photos of Marilyn with bits of interesting information about her and also Glamour Room offerings. Did you know that Marilyn played piano and guitar? You have a choice of whatever service you want, or, you can do a full “Marilyn,” which includes her signature red (of course) nail polish, lips, makeup and hair in her style adapted

to you. Some of the MM signature makeup styles are: “Blushing Babydoll,” “Voluptuous Icon,” “Norma Jeane Natural,” “Golden Glam,” “Malibu Sun-Kissed Star,” and “Bombshell Blond.” I went for sort of a semi-Marilyn with nails, hairstyle, and a fassage (a deep facial rub with rhythmic strokes that stimulate circulation, and lift and tone the muscles.) Monica Mackey was my excellent aesthetician. Although it would take Cinderella’s fairy godmother, several miracles, and some heavy duty pixie dust to make me look like Marilyn, I must say I did feel a lot more fresh and girly when I left — and my husband actually took notice! Full services offered at the Glamour Room are manis, pedis or combo thereof, waxing, fassage, massages, facials, haircut & styles, and of course, makeup. Guests can have free consultations to find the perfect skin and beauty products for their needs. The Glamour Room uses Marilyn Monroe products which are packed with all-natural ingredients and are for sale to the public. If

you have your nails done, you can buy a bottle of MM nail polish for only $3.50 to take home. I bought the same color I had done at MM, and I love it. I never realized how important the brush in nail polish is. The MM brush has great control and I found it really easy to apply it myself at home. If you become a regular at the Glamour Room, you can become a “Mad about Marilyn” Rewards Program Member, which gives you discounts and perks. Membership fee is $30 per month. Including the membership fee, for every $10 you spend, you get $1 in Mad Money credited to your account. For example: buy a membership for $30, and you’ll receive $33 in your account each month. You’ll get a 10% discount for all retail products. Members get a 20% discount on all services at all of their hotel spas. Hmmm. I wonder how I’d look as a “Bombshell Blond”… The Marilyn Monroe Galmour Room is located at Sundial (On Baywalk at 1st. Street N,) 125 2nd Ave N, St Petersburg, FL 33701-3315. 727-5928390. ArtLines JAMIE WYETH’S PORTRAITS OF RUDOLF NUREYEV Oct 11 – Jan 18 The encounter between Jamie Wyeth,

one of America’s most gifted artists and portrait painters, and dance icon Rudolf Nureyev was destined to produce fascinating, revealing works. This exhibition features 19 stellar examples, along with three sketchbooks, five costumes, and even a pair of Nureyev’s Capezio ballet slippers. Three paintings are large-scale. Rudolf Nureyev (1938-1993) trained and danced with the Soviet Union’s famed Kirov Ballet and though watched by KGB agents, made the leap to freedom in 1961 in Paris. The defection was “front page” news internationally. Nureyev brought daring athleticism to his roles and turned attention to the male dancer. His partnership with Margot Fonteyn of The Royal Ballet garnered sellout crowds, rave reviews, and standing ovations. Jamie Wyeth completed his Nureyev portraits, including posthumous works, between 1977 and 2001. He did not set out to capture Nureyev performing. In fact, most of the portraits 102

Building the Panama Canal Photographs by Ernest Hallen - thru Nov 9

This exhibition of photographs by Ernest “Red” Hallen (1875–1947) commemorates the Panama Canal’s Centennial and focuses on the dramatic changes to the area during its construction. Hallen was appointed the official photographer by the Isthmian Canal Commission (ICC). He produced more than 16,000 images during his 30-year career. Hallen’s images are more than mere documents. Until his retirement in 1937, Hallen’s views were the primary means by which Americans and the world experienced the great engineering feat. The works in this exhibition date from 1904 to 1915. Images of the Culebra Cut (or Gaillard Cut) comprise the bulk of Hallen’s work in the MFA’s holdings. Engineers and workers carved out a valley through the Culebra mountain ridge linking Gatun Lake and the Gulf of Panama, and the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. In addition to the Culebra Cut, there are also photographs of the construction of the

Gatun, Miraflores, and Pedro Miguel locks, which raise and lower ships between the main elevation of the Canal and sea level. Photographs of the tugboat Gatun, the first to traverse the Gatun locks on September 26, 1913, demonstrate the excitement surrounding the complex project. FLORIDA MUSEUM OF PHOTOGRAPHIC ARTS

Ruth Bernhard: Body And Form thru Dec 28

Ruth Bernhard, known for her imagery of the female nude, primarily focused on the contrast of light and significance of line. Bernhard, who was most active in the

1950s and 60s, worked among contemporaries such as Edward Weston, Ansel Adams, and Immogen Cunningham. Bernhard’s presentation of the female nude came before the popularity of feminist photographers in the 1970s and portrays sincere and harmonic views of female form. Through her lens, an egg slicer became Kitchen Music, a symphony of light and shadow, while Lifesavers showed themselves to be so much more than a simple sweet treat.

Elger Esser: Combray - Oct 4 – March 29

In contrast to most other contemporary art photographers, Elger Esser is no “painter of modern life” (Baudelaire on his friend, the painter Edouard Manet). Early on in his artistic life, Esser had decided on landscape photography. The settings for his photography are located primarily in France, a country that became his adopted home of sorts. Producing photography created in accordance with classical compositional principles, Esser has been working for 15 years on the illustrated atlas of a country that seems unaffected by the technological changes that the 19th century brought with it. Repurposing Ideas D

IYers are enjoying the process of reclaiming, recycling, and repurposing worn out, vintage, and antique objects. I have seen my fair share of vintage tea cups turned into candlesticks or lamps, reclaimed headboards repurposed into benches, and drainage gutters reused for strawberry planters. While not everything should be repurposed, some junk can be reconsidered and made into some cool contemporary stuff. Here are some vintage and antique pieces that have been re-done which may provide a few ideas for those of you who like dumpster diving, yard sale hunting, and rehabbing old treasures.

6. Vintage suitcases reused as coffee table with glass top 7. Old casement window as garden table top 8. Old feed bag material re-sewn as throw pillows 9. Old ball jars as miniature plant terrariums for kitchen shelf 10. Victorian (but clean) chamber pot as magazine rack Recycled plastic spoon mirror won a 4-H ribbon at Nebraska State Fair.

1. Old library card catalogue cabinet repurposed into a wine rack 2. Old armoire gutted and turned into a liquor cabinet 3. Old clarinets and trumpets made into garden fountains 3.

Saxophone and trumpet fountains on display at the Kansas City Home & Garden Show.

And my favorite repurposing idea… of course, it has to do with jewelry. Take those old 1950s wrist watches (just the watch, not the entire band) and link them together with a single metal loop. Link each loop to another wrist watch until you have linked enough to reach around your wrist. This continuous chain-link of wrist watches makes a cute bracelet. For those of you who are all ready to recycle that old piece of furniture, be sure you know the origin of what you are re-purposing and its value before you undertake your DIY project. It’s no fun if you find out that you accidentally repainted an antique library chair with Rustoleum that once belonged to Noah Webster worth $50,000 and completely devalued it.

4. Old but clean fishing creel recycled into a pocketbook 5. Old wicker hamper reclaimed into an oversized garden planter

t. Petersburg was the first American city to hire a public relations director and the first to initiate a successful advertising program. More than almost any other Florida city, St. Petersburg relied on a constant message in postcards, newspaper editorials, print ads and broadcast commercials to market itself as the nation’s playground. By the early 1900s, this sleepy fishing village had become the tourist destination of choice for thousands of winter-weary northerners. Early enthusiasts claimed the sun-filled peninsula was “the southern garden of perpetual well-being.” Historian Nevin D. Sitler presents an entertaining look at the men who crafted the promotion of paradise.

UELSMANN UNTITLED A Retrospective By Jerry N. Uelsmann www.uelsmann.net/

F

or more than five decades, Jerry Uelsmann has sought to transform photography, de-emphasizing its function as a form of documentation, liberating it as a medium capable of re-imagining the real. Widely known as one of the forefathers of the digitally manipulated image, his work has influenced and inspired a broad range of artists and photographers—even as he maintains his strict adherence to purely analog tools to explore “the alchemy of the darkroom.” Uelsmann crafts his images using the integration of multiple negatives and processing effects. Uelsmann Untitled features the largest number of Uelsmann images ever collected in a single volume. Among them are some that have never before been published, several beloved favorites, and many rarely seen images. Drawn from his entire career, they show both the evolution of his technique and the solidity of his vision. Jerry Uelsmann began teaching photography at the University of Florida in Gainesville in 1960 and became a graduate research professor of art at the university in 1974, and is now retired from teaching. He lives in Gainesville, Florida.

Antelope Valley is located in northern Los Angeles County, California and the southeast portion of Kern County, California, and constitutes the western tip of the Mojave Desert. The Poppy Reserve comes alive with the seasonal surprises of the Mojave Desert Grassland habitat. The duration and intensity of colors and scents vary from year to year. The wildflower season generally lasts from as early as mid-February through late May, with a variety of wildflowers creating a mosaic of color that changes daily. Eight miles of trails through the gentle rolling hills, including a paved section for wheelchair access, make the park a wonderful place to hike and explore any season.
