November 16 - 17 Who was Mary Magdalene? She is depicted in the Gospels as the only person, the only one of Christ’s followers who was present for his death, his interment, the rock being rolled away, the resurrection – the only one who saw all those things. The Magdalene of The Da Vinci Code is intriguing, but ultimately defines her as somebody’s wife. Who was Mary Magdalene? Upon This Rock is a first person narrative of the life of Mary Magdalene and her journey as a follower of the man called Jesus of Nazareth. We meet Magdalene in the last moments of her existence, speaking from a cave in southern France.

Here, she tells the story of her journey, from meeting the man Jesus to conflicts with the apostle Peter to her final ministry in France and her own transfiguration. Written and performed by Roxanne Fay, Upon This Rock strives to make flesh the woman who is called “The Apostle of the Apostles.” David A. Miracle on South Division Street thru Dec 21

“Miracle on South Division Street,” by Tom Dudzick, is the story of the Nowak family, living in NY’s East Side. The neighborhood is depressed, but not Clara, the family matriarch. She runs her soup kitchen and tends to the twenty-foot shrine to the Blessed Mother which adjoins the house. This beacon of faith commemorates the day in 1942 when the Blessed Virgin Mary materialized in her father’s barber shop. At a family meeting daughter Ruth divulges her plan to finally “go public” with the family miracle by creating a play about the sacred event. But the family’s faith is shaken when a deathbed confession causes the family legend to unravel. The results are heartfelt and hilarious. Well, the Thunderheads are Celtic Thunder’s own legion of fans. Celtic Thunder is a group of men from Ireland and Scotland who range in age from early 20’s to mid 40’s. They celebrate their common Celtic heritage through song. The shows include songs from the traditional to modern originals. The Celtic Thunder Band backs the group on most of the tours. Some show feature other bands, The Celtic Fire Band; Goitse (Gaelic for Come Here) and the Galic Thythm Band. Looking Good... Vionic

Restore Natural Foot Function

T

www.vionicshoes.com

he Do your feet a favor and wear comfortable shoes, such as those from Vionic with Orthaheel technology, the podiatrist-designed footwear and orthotics brand. These shoes will make your feet feel better because of their expert podiatrist engineering. Australian Podiatrist, Phillip Vasyli introduced the Orthaheel brand in 1991 in order to reach a larger audience of people struggling with heel, knee, leg and lower back pain. Orthaheel technology helps reduce over-pronation, which can improve foot function and relieve common associated pains such as plantar fasciitis (heel pain), knee pain and back pain. It is the only footwear recommended by both the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) and integrative medicine doctor, Andrew Weil, MD. Feet were designed to walk on soft, natural surfaces like soil and sand, yet today we spend most of our time standing, walking, and running on unnatural, hard surfaces which force the feet to roll over to gain contact with the ground, which flattens the arches and can disrupt normal knee function and hip alignment and increase pressure on the lower back. The Vionic mission is to help people reclaim their natural alignment to enable their feet, ankles, and knees to function as they naturally would. With men’s and women’s silhouettes ranging from sandals, slippers, wedges, heels and boots, Vionic offers an attractive array of styles that will keep you comfortable and aligned on any adventure you choose.

MARILYN MONROE Glamour Room The Iconic Beauty’s Style Comes to St.Petersburg Story and photos by Melissa Wolcott Martino

I

n spite of some of the kitchy stuff you have seen through the years, the Marilyn Monroe estate is very protective of her image, so I was quite surprised when I heard about the new Marilyn Monroe Glamour Room opening up in the Sundial complex in downtown St. Petersburg. Apparently, the estate had a lot of faith and confidence in founder and CEO Niki T. Bryan when deciding to team up with her for this endeavor. Of course Ms. Bryan does have beaucoup experience in running salons since she has had her Niki Bryan Spas in finer resorts across the country such as Ritz-Carlton, Walt Disney World, Marriott and Hilton. I always liked Marilyn Monroe. She projected a sweet vulnerability. Women wanted to mother her and men wanted to… well… Curiosity got the best of me, and I just had to experience the MM Glamour Room. I set up an appointment for manicure, pedicure, “fassage” (explanation coming) and a blow dry. The Salon is very “Marilyn” in a classy minimalist sort of way. Clean lines, pale grays and whites, and pops of red with iconic photos of Marilyn sprinkled throughout. Large flat screen wall mounted TV sets show photos of Marilyn with bits of interesting information about her and also Glamour Room offerings. Did you know that Marilyn played piano and guitar? You have a choice of whatever service you want, or, you can do a full “Marilyn,” which includes her signature red (of course) nail polish, lips, makeup and hair in her style adapted

to you. Some of the MM signature makeup styles are: “Blushing Babydoll,” “Voluptuous Icon,” “Norma Jeane Natural,” “Golden Glam,” “Malibu Sun-Kissed Star,” and “Bombshell Blond.” I went for sort of a semi-Marilyn with nails, hairstyle, and a fassage (a deep facial rub with rhythmic strokes that stimulate circulation, and lift and tone the muscles.) Monica Mackey was my excellent aesthetician. Although it would take Cinderella’s fairy godmother, several miracles, and some heavy duty pixie dust to make me look like Marilyn, I must say I did feel a lot more fresh and girly when I left — and my husband actually took notice! Full services offered at the Glamour Room are manis, pedis or combo thereof, waxing, fassage, massages, facials, haircut & styles, and of course, makeup. Guests can have free consultations to find the perfect skin and beauty products for their needs. The Glamour Room uses Marilyn Monroe products which are packed with all-natural ingredients and are for sale to the public. If

you have your nails done, you can buy a bottle of MM nail polish for only $3.50 to take home. I bought the same color I had done at MM, and I love it. I never realized how important the brush in nail polish is. The MM brush has great control and I found it really easy to apply it myself at home. If you become a regular at the Glamour Room, you can become a “Mad about Marilyn” Rewards Program Member, which gives you discounts and perks. Membership fee is $30 per month. Including the membership fee, for every $10 you spend, you get $1 in Mad Money credited to your account. For example: buy a membership for $30, and you’ll receive $33 in your account each month. You’ll get a 10% discount for all retail products. Members get a 20% discount on all services at all of their hotel spas. Hmmm. I wonder how I’d look as a “Bombshell Blond”… The Marilyn Monroe Galmour Room is located at Sundial (On Baywalk at 1st. Street N,) 125 2nd Ave N, St Petersburg, FL 33701-3315. 727-5928390. ArtLines JAMIE WYETH’S PORTRAITS OF RUDOLF NUREYEV thru Jan 18 The encounter between Jamie Wyeth,

one of America’s most gifted artists and portrait painters, and dance icon Rudolf Nureyev was destined to produce fascinating, revealing works. This exhibition features 19 stellar examples, along with three sketchbooks, five costumes, and even a pair of Nureyev’s Capezio ballet slippers. Three paintings are large-scale. Rudolf Nureyev (1938-1993) trained and danced with the Soviet Union’s famed Kirov Ballet and though watched by KGB agents, made the leap to freedom in 1961 in Paris. The defection was “front page” news internationally. Nureyev brought daring athleticism to his roles and turned attention to the male dancer. His partnership with Margot Fonteyn of The Royal Ballet garnered sellout crowds, rave reviews, and standing ovations. Jamie Wyeth completed his Nureyev portraits, including posthumous works, between 1977 and 2001. He did not set out to capture Nureyev performing. In fact, most of the portraits capture the artist at a still point, though still radiating extraordinary energy and concentration. 86

R o b e r t Rauschenberg and James Rosenquist: Images from Everywhere, Prints and Photographs presents nearly 30 fascinating works on paper. Some are large-scale. The exhibition also includes a number of photographs by Rauschenberg (1925-2008). In 1983 Robert Rauschenberg noted, “My images come from everywhere…I support the post office. Subscribe to everything…I pick up everything I can get my hands on.” He and James Rosenquist have explored and transformed the world around them in their art, creating some of the most compelling work

of our time. After building highly successful careers in New York, they both established strong ties to the west coast of Florida—Rauschenberg to Captiva, where he passed away, and Rosenquist to Aripeka, where he had a home and studio for 30 years. Both were destroyed in a brushfire in 2009. Rosenquist still spends time in a guest house which survived the fire. MFA, 255 Beach Dr. N.E., St. Petersburg, 727-8962667; www.fine-arts.org

Inspired by a nearly life-sized marble statue of the god from the Tampa collection, the exhibition features over 125 works from major public and private collections in the United States and Europe. Poseidon and the Sea also examines‑ a range of religious cults and the types of votive objects dedicated to Poseidon and related divinities, as well as the myriad ways in which daily life in the ancient Mediterranean world was tied to the sea. FLORIDA MUSEUM OF PHOTOGRAPHIC ARTS

Ruth Bernhard: Body And Form thru Dec 28

Ruth Bernhard, known for her imagery of the female nude, primarily focused on the contrast of light and significance of line. Bernhard, who was most active in the

1950s and 60s, worked among contemporaries such as Edward Weston, Ansel Adams, and Immogen Cunningham. Bernhard’s presentation of the female nude came before the popularity of feminist photographers in the 1970s and portrays sincere and harmonic views of female form. Through her lens, an egg slicer became Kitchen Music, a symphony of light and shadow, while Lifesavers showed themselves to be so much more than a simple sweet treat.

Elger Esser: Combray - thru March 29

In contrast to most other contemporary art photographers, Elger Esser is no “painter of modern life” (Baudelaire on his friend, the painter Edouard Manet). Early on in his artistic life, Esser had decided on landscape photography. The settings for his photography are located primarily in France, a country that became his adopted home of sorts. Producing photography created in accordance with classical compositional principles, Esser has been working for 15 years on the illustrated atlas of a country that seems unaffected by the technological changes that the 19th century brought with it. Pinellas Park Art Society presents Florida HighwaymAn, Robert Lewis Nov 16

One of the few remaining, original, active Florida Highwaymen, Robert Lewis, is appearing at the Pinellas Park Art Society, Park Station, 5851 Park Boulevard, in Pinellas Park on November 16, from noon to 4pm. Mr. Lewis will demonstrate his 88

techniques, discuss his work and feature works for sale. The Florida Highwaymen, a group of 26 AfricanAmericans, broke convention to paint beautiful iconic Florida landscapes. Originating in the mid-1950’s, an era marked by racism and poverty, these selftaught entrepreneurs mentored each other while they painted on basic materials like Upson board for canvasses, and crown molding for frames. Local galleries shunned their work, so they peddled their art from car trunks along area roadways, hence their name. Their art freed them from work in citrus groves and labor camps, and they created a body of work that has become not only a timeless collection of a natural environment, but a symbol of determination and belief in oneself. The surviving Highwaymen, now in their sixties and seventies, are an important chapter in America’s culture and history. Fifty years later, the Highwaymen are now an integral part of art history. 727-204-4256; www.pinellasart.com/

Top 10 Thanksgiving Collectibles I

n the autumn of 1621, the Plymouth colonists and the Wampanoag Indians celebrated the autumn or harvest feast together. The harvest feast was a longstanding event in Native American culture and it occurred long before the Pilgrims reached Plymouth, Massachusetts. Today, we call that celebration Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is one of the times when families reunite to take part in age-old family traditions. While most families enjoy a feast of turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and the trimmings, we also enjoy the objects that remind us of coming home at holiday time. Kitchen collectibles are those items that stir memories like canister sets, mixing bowls, holiday china, hand painted tea sets, seasonal tablecloths and matching napkins, ceramic floral centerpieces, special crystal goblets, well-worn casserole dishes, etc. The antique and vintage kitchen objects that make holidays special can have collectible and monetary value, too. Here are the top 10 Thanksgiving holiday collectibles that you can find in your mother’s or grandmother’s kitchen and beyond: 1. Turkey platters of Staffordshire or Limoges china. These platters are typically of blue/white ceramic or full color featuring an image of a dressed turkey at the center. They date from the mid to late 19th Century to the present day and remain highly collectible.

2. Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade memorabilia. Whatever I am doing on Thanksgiving morning and wherever I am spending Thanksgiving in any given year, I do not miss this fabulous American event. The long running parade is an American tradition with celebrity guests, decorated floats, marching bands, high flying character balloons and Santa Claus. The employee-organized parade debuted on November 27, 1924 and its long and diverse history offers collectors various types of parade memorabilia. 3. Steiff turkey toy. The German stuffed toy firm, Steiff is best known for its antique mohair teddy bears 92

Tucky, Steiff turkey toy stuffed animal dating back to the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. The toy maker also produced many other types of stuffed animals from the mid 1900s. t. Petersburg was the first American city to hire a public relations director and the first to initiate a successful advertising program. More than almost any other Florida city, St. Petersburg relied on a constant message in postcards, newspaper editorials, print ads and broadcast commercials to market itself as the nation’s playground. By the early 1900s, this sleepy fishing village had become the tourist destination of choice for thousands of winter-weary northerners. Early enthusiasts claimed the sun-filled peninsula was “the southern garden of perpetual well-being.” Historian Nevin D. Sitler presents an entertaining look at the men who crafted the promotion of paradise.

UELSMANN UNTITLED A Retrospective By Jerry N. Uelsmann www.uelsmann.net/

F

or more than five decades, Jerry Uelsmann has sought to transform photography, de-emphasizing its function as a form of documentation, liberating it as a medium capable of re-imagining the real. Widely known as one of the forefathers of the digitally manipulated image, his work has influenced and inspired a broad range of artists and photographers—even as he maintains his strict adherence to purely analog tools to explore “the alchemy of the darkroom.” Uelsmann crafts his images using the integration of multiple negatives and processing effects. Uelsmann Untitled features the largest number of Uelsmann images ever collected in a single volume. Among them are some that have never before been published, several beloved favorites, and many rarely seen images. Drawn from his entire career, they show both the evolution of his technique and the solidity of his vision. Jerry Uelsmann began teaching photography at the University of Florida in Gainesville in 1960 and became a graduate research professor of art at the university in 1974, and is now retired from teaching. He lives in Gainesville, Florida.
