December 14th is National Monkey Day. Citrus County loves their monkeys so much so that they have their own island, which came about by accident - what started out as a pile of rocks became a small barren island when an overeager dragline operator got a bit carried away with the dirt. The original inhabitants of Monkey Island were brought over from Africa for a new wildlife attaction - which later became the Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park. The monkeys were originally placed on the island to keep them out of trouble. They were prone to escaping and stealing candy, getting into visitors’ cars, and biting tourists. The monkeys love to watch the river activity - including the many visitors who travel around the island by boat, canoe and kayak. One of the best views of Monkey Island is from the Monkey Bar at the Homosassa Riverside Resort. Patrons can watch them swing and play throughout the day. Can’t make it to Monkey Island - watch them on the live MonkeyCam. www.homosassaflorida.com/tag/monkey-islandhomosassa

RENNY

Smartphone Hub & Ringer

www.olenstechnology.com/product/renny-home/ An important cell call at home goes unanswered because a phone ringtone is too low, the phone is out of reach, or it is muffled in a pocket, briefcase, drawer or car. Sound familiar? No worries. Olens Technology has the Renny HOME and Renny JR. products designed with technologies to help make sure cell phone rings get heard and answered. The Renny models offer a range of up to 200 feet, always on auto-connect, built-in selectable ringtones for loud and clear call notification, and more. Renny JR. connects one phone within 150 feet, forever auto connects and has multiple loud selectable ringtones. The Renny JR. also notifies users of text and email notifications, and streams music from any smartphone with its powerful and clear loudspeaker. Renny HOME is a stand-alone base station & smartphone ringer that automatically connects up to two mobile phones wirelessly when within 200 feet - without using a landline or home phone system and there are no monthly fees or service charges. Renny HOME announces the name of the caller, allows users to handle incoming calls handsfree by speaking “answer” or “ignore” out loud, select loud built-in ringtones, and stream music from a smartphone with its quality speaker. Renny Ringer smartphone hub and ringer works anywhere in a home or office by automatically connecting wirelessly to any mobile phone within a 200 foot line of site range. The rechargeable Renny is always on and ready and works unnoticeably in the background until it is needed. Many Blue tooth speakers answer a phone. Unfortunately most require the user to manually connect every time they use it. Worse yet, when connected to the speaker the phone doesn’t work, because the speaker “steals” the call. Renny eliminates these problems, and packs many phone-friendly features into a little package. www.AccentOnTampaBay.com

Miracle on South Division Street thru Dec 21

Georgina McKee has been working with an Israeli tutor for six months, preparing for the role of Ayelet an Israeli woman dragged on a U.S. road trip by her grandmother, who’s searching for the lost love of her youth. Snowed in on Christmas Eve with miscommunication

“Miracle on South Division Street,” by Tom Dudzick, is the story of the Nowak family, living in NY’s East Side. The neighborhood is depressed, but not Clara, the family matriarch. She runs her soup kitchen and tends to the twenty-foot shrine to the Blessed Mother which adjoins the house. This beacon of faith commemorates the day in 1942 when the Blessed Virgin Mary materialized in her father’s barber shop. At a family meeting daughter Ruth divulges her plan to finally “go public” with the family miracle by creating a play about the sacred event. But the family’s faith is shaken when a deathbed confession causes the family legend to unravel. The results are heartfelt and hilarious. T

he Mediaeval Baebes from Britain have been charming audiences now for the past 17 years on both sides of the Atlantic with their unique ethereal voices, choral music set to ancient texts and original authentic musical arrangements depicting the true lively stories of Mediaeval times. Of Kings and Angels is a Christmas Carol Collection drawing on popular carols arranged with the mediaeval choir and instruments. Features “We Three Kings,” “Good King Wenceslas,” “Gaudete,” “Silent Night” and many more.

Dan Chadburn Whispers the Falling Snow www.danchadburn.com Pianist Dan Chadburn has created an album exemplifying and glorifying that season. It is a collection of 10 solo piano instrumentals comprised of new material composed by Chadburn — songs associated with winter solstice season. Chadburn is a classically trained pianist who enjoys improvisational creations as much as playing traditional repertoire. He uses improvisation to compose most of his material on the piano. For this album he closed his eyes while playing and focused on visualizing snowflakes falling, and what it feels like when you watch them. Erwilian Midwinter’s Night www.erwilian.com Seattle-based ensemble, Erwilian, moves as one entity with each of its multi instrumentalists’ high proficiency in their craft performed on an array of acoustic instruments ranging from the familiar recorders, guitars and drums, to the more unusual hammered dulcimers, marimbas, with everything acoustic. Erwilan blends everything from bluegrass rhythms and new age instrumentation to fantasy folk music and experimentalism of electronica.

Whitney is the star (as Ralphie) of the music short film “Run, Run Rudolph,” a parody of “A Christmas Story” seen by over 200 million people. 48

ArtLines JAMIE WYETH’S PORTRAITS OF RUDOLF NUREYEV thru Jan 18 The encounter between Jamie Wyeth,

one of America’s most gifted artists and portrait painters, and dance icon Rudolf Nureyev was destined to produce fascinating, revealing works. This exhibition features 19 stellar examples, along with three sketchbooks, five costumes, and even a pair of Nureyev’s Capezio ballet slippers. Three paintings are large-scale. Rudolf Nureyev (1938-1993) trained and danced with the Soviet Union’s famed Kirov Ballet and though watched by KGB agents, made the leap to freedom in 1961 in Paris. The defection was “front page” news internationally. Nureyev brought daring athleticism to his roles and turned attention to the male dancer. His partnership with Margot Fonteyn of The Royal Ballet garnered sellout crowds, rave reviews, and standing ovations. Jamie Wyeth completed his Nureyev portraits, including posthumous works, between 1977 and 2001. He did not set out to capture Nureyev performing. In fact, most of the portraits capture the artist at a still point, though still radiating extraordinary energy and concentration. 64

R o b e r t Rauschenberg and James Rosenquist: Images from Everywhere, Prints and Photographs presents nearly 30 fascinating works on paper. Some are large-scale. The exhibition also includes a number of photographs by Rauschenberg (1925-2008). In 1983 Robert Rauschenberg noted, “My images come from everywhere…I support the post office. Subscribe to everything…I pick up everything I can get my hands on.” He and James Rosenquist have explored and transformed the world around them in their art, creating some of the most compelling work

of our time. After building highly successful careers in New York, they both established strong ties to the west coast of Florida—Rauschenberg to Captiva, where he passed away, and Rosenquist to Aripeka, where he had a home and studio for 30 years. Both were destroyed in a brushfire in 2009. Rosenquist still spends time in a guest house which survived the fire. MFA, 255 Beach Dr. N.E., St. Petersburg, 727-8962667; www.fine-arts.org

Bernhard’s presentation of the female nude came before the popularity of feminist photographers in the 1970s and portrays sincere and harmonic views of female form. Cool Ideas for Repurposing at Holiday Time

I

have been known to say that just because something is old that doesn’t mean it is automatically valuable. I have junk in my house, my grandmother had junk in her house…sometimes it’s just older junk. With those sage words of wisdom offered to the masses, here are some creative ideas about what to do with those keepsakes that you just can’t part with but you don’t want to just store away in a plastic tub for the rest of your life. Objects that have some value to you on some level but that really won’t make a big difference when it comes to cashing in are the objects that are the topic of this particular column. Repurposing is very popular now and more so at the holidays. There are more people seeking out antiques and thrift store items in order to reuse or recycle them than those who just want to collect for collecting’s sake. Be sure you only repurpose those objects that really are not valuable. Once you know that you have a low value object, consider some creative ideas.

Piecing up the Plates

Plates can be among some of the most inexpensive collectibles that nearly everyone has hanging around the house, attic, or yard sale. Vintage decorative floral plates can be used at parties and even given away to guests as favors. They really spruce up a buffet line, block party, or family get together. Look around your grandma’s, aunt’s, and neighbor’s cupboards and see if you can spot any plates. I have some chipped yet colorful examples from the 1970s hanging around my cabinets that would be prime examples for this project. Some creative craft aficionados have taken such plates, broken them into pieces and used them in craft projects. Just break the inexpensive plates into 2 to 4 inch pieces and then use them as you would tiles. Some of the most popular repurposing objects for old plates

68

are refrigerator magnets. Just simply stick an adhesive backed magnet to the back of your plate piece. Some damaged or chipped plates have been recycled into a decorative concrete frame around the kid’s sandbox or kiddie pool area. They will look great stucco-ed or glued onto wooden birdhouses, garden jardinaires or bird baths, and trivets. Some folks have used broken plates as walkways leading to a garden shed or pool house. These are some great ways to use those damaged and not so valuable floral plates and keep the memories, too.

Picking up Jewelry

Damaged jewelry or fancy buttons—particularly cheap pieces of costume jewelry that can no longer be repaired or worn—can be reused and made into really cool art objects. Damaged pieces of costume jewelry can be the source for jewelry pictures by sewing or gluing the broken pieces onto a piece of velvet, felt, or fabric. Then, the textile is framed as you would a collage. Old broken jewelry or pieces thereof can be made into a brooch tussy mussy or brooch bouquet comprised of both fresh flowers and colorful fake gemstone pins in the shape of flowers. Country music star, Miranda Lambert carried a brooch bouquet at her country themed wedding. It is a cool union of vintage and Victorian, fresh and faux. Some pieces of costume jewelry are valuable so be sure to check out the value with an appraisal before you start taking apart the jewelry pieces that are still intact. However, the damaged pieces are fair game for your crafters out there. Celebrity Ph.D. antiques appraiser, author, and awardwinning TV personality, Dr. Lori hosts antiques appraisal events worldwide. It is a two story wood frame structure, three bays wide, with a central chimney. A single story shed-roof ell, part of the house’s original construction, extends to the rear. It has a side-hall plan inside, an atypical layout for traditional 18th-century houses. The house was built in 1770, and is the only known house of its type to survive in the area. Its interior is well-preserved. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.
