Kulcar Car Fan Makes Hot Cars Cool! www.kulcar.com

Summer is just over the horizon and so are hot car interiors. But a solar powered car ventilation system called Kulcar is available to cool things down inside vehicles. Sonray Technologies’ Kulcar product offers an efficient dual chamber fan design that continuously circulates clean, fresh air and expels hazardous fumes from inside parked cars to keep them cooler. It is strictly solar operated and is capable of venting 45 cubic feet per minute, eliminating the uncomfortable hot air lurking in cars on sweltering days. Kulcar’s convenient size and design allows it to be easily mounted on car windows, providing a cooler and healthier vehicle and ride. Kulcar completely replaces the air inside an average sized car every 90 seconds, reducing vehicle temperatures by up to 68 degrees and providing a more comfortable ride. It’s beneficial to the environment, and is useful for conserving fuel and energy. Kulcar eliminates the need for temporary car fans, tinting, sunshades and sunlight reflectors.

COOL FLASH PILLOW End www.coolcaretechnologies.com/

Night Sweats!

C

ool Care Technologies incorporates unique gel technology that provides cooling for hours without refrigeration, electricity or cold water. Available in two sizes, the Cool Flash Pad is ideal not only for pillows and mattresses but also chairs, car seats, beach chairs, ball parks, stadiums or anywhere else users want instant relief from heat, night sweats, headaches, migraines, muscle soreness or fever. Unlike other products that require pre-freezing or the addition of water, the Cool Flash Pad works instantly, with no preparation or any energy source needed. Users simply apply pressure by sitting, lying down or laying their head or other body part on the pad. Once activated, the gel provides safe, consistent endothermic cooling, which is cooler than body temperature, for up to three hours. Removing the Cool Flash Pad and allowing it to sit at room temperature for 15-20 minutes reactivates it for repeated use, while placing it in the refrigerator for 15 to 30 minutes “supercharges” it for extra-long, extra-strength cooling. The Cool Flash Pad comes in two sizes: a 12” x 16” pillow size, and a 45” x 27.5” mattress size. Pads can be placed under or on top of bedding. Cool Flash products last for a year or more, are easy to clean, and fold easily. Cool Pet Pads, available in four sizes, offer the same gel technology as Cool Flash Pads and are a great way for pet owners to give their dogs and cats relief from hot summer days and nights. Many people keep two Cool Pet Pads available—one can recharge while the other is in use—to provide long-lasting cooling in cars or on pet beds.

So there was only one thing left to do – kill Marvin so they can run off together and live a carefree life of passion and romance in a tropical paradise. The lovers come up with a crazy plan to poison Marvin over dinner. Delores invites George to dinner and introduces him to Marvin as a new friend. While Marvin checks on dessert, they slip poison into his wine. But things get out of hand when Marvin doesn’t fall for the bait. What was supposed to be a simple foolproof murder turns into a hilarious fiasco when Esperanza, the eccentric Spanish-speaking maid, arrives on the wrong day and she, too, falls for George. Now George and Delores have to get rid of the love-sick Esperanza and carry out their plan to kill Marvin–that is without killing each other first! Their attempts get funnier and funnier as the lovers try again and again to finish the job only to have Esperanza and Marvin unknowingly foil their plans each time–resulting in the wacky tale of love, murder, and … shoes! Anticipation building for the inaugural season of Music Director Michael Francis The Florida Orchestra’s (TFO) season just ended in May, but the anticipation already is building for the inaugural season of new Music Director Michael Francis in the fall. The orchestra will celebrate all season long in honor of Maestro Francis, only the fourth music director in its 48 seasons. He raises the baton on a new era, leading with a fresh vibe and renewed focus on what has always been at the orchestra’s core: music for all people. Here are some season highlights: Simone Porter

Timeless classical masterpieces Michael Francis’ opening night as music director kicks off the Tampa Bay Times Masterworks series with Rachmaninoff’s Piano Michael Francis Concerto No. 3 (Oct. 2-4). Other series highlights include Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons (Oct. 23-25), Beethoven’s “Eroica” Symphony (April 29-May 1), Stravinsky’s The Firebird Suite (April 15-17), Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition (Nov. 6-8) and Handel’s Messiah (Dec. 4-6). You’ll also hear TFO’s dynamic concertmaster Jeffrey Multer performing a Mozart Violin Concerto as well as guest solo violinists Lara St. John and Simone Porter. Favorite popular standards The Raymond James Pops series opens with an offer you can’t refuse: “A Night at the Oscars” (Oct. 9-11), with Michael Francis conducting music from award-winning films such as The Godfather and Lord of the Rings. Sultry Tampa Bay nights heat up with “Red Hot Blues” (March 4-6), featuring the music of Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday and Count Basie. Other shows celebrate the 100th birthday of Frank Sinatra (Nov. 20-22), along with “The Fabulous Forties” (Jan. 15-17) and the tango (May 13-15), all under the direction of Principal Pops Conductor Jeff Tyzik. And it wouldn’t be December without the family centerpiece, “Holiday Pops” (Dec. 11-13).

Coffee and Rock series Our Coffee series serves up symphonic favorites along with complimentary coffee and doughnuts and a side of lively stories from Principal Guest Conductor Stuart Malina. This season features “Rhapsody in Blue” (March 2-3), “Our American Music” (Oct. 29) and a “Tchaikovsky Celebration” (Jan. 13-14). The Rock series on Friday nights at the Mahaffey Theater explores the classical side of classic rock, with the music of U2 (Jan. 29), The Police (May 6) and Led Zeppelin (Oct. 16).

odder & Shine is the new entry into the Tampa restaurant scene by Greg and Michelle Baker, the folks behind the popular Refinery Restaurant. This Seminole Heights hot spot is all about repurposing, from the restaurant itself to the menu offerings. Indeed, the unusual name of “fodder” (in this case) refers to the use of raw materials, and “shine” for moonshine. The restaurant’s decor is very eclectic, with bare walls, wooden tables and old window frames. It’s the unique menu, however, that will bring people back. Florida Cracker food is original Florida pioneer cowboy cuisine, influenced by Spanish, Scottish and Caribbean cultures. Chef de Cuisine Eric McHugh has taken old Cracker recipes and refined them to please the modern palate. The farm to table concept is all the rage now, and F&S is at the forefront with the freshest produce and meat. Some of the meat offerings on the menu change daily, as F&S will purchase an entire animal and feature different cuts until it is all used with very little waste. all edible parts are used. On our visit, we enjoyed the Cracker Beef Pot Roast braised in Rye Whiskey, spices, and served with root vegs and sofkee. Delicious. The tenderest of meat. Also, the Grilled Shrimp brushed with Old Sour and herbs proved to be very tasty. The Bacon Fat Cornbread may be the best cornbread we’ve ever had. Made the old fashioned way, it’s served in a skillet with butter and drizzled honey. Cottage Cheese Cake for dessert? Had to try it. Amazing. The bar is proving to be very popular as well, with some F&S creations like the F&S White Manhattan with White Dog whiskey, Bianco vermouth, orange bitters, and the I-75 with London Dry Gin, orange blossom simple, lemon, and sparkling wine.

Don’t Worry. Drink Naked.

Naked Turtle takes it’s rum seriously. Produced on the island of St. Croix the rum is crafted with fine sugar cane molasses and distilled five times with the pristine waters of the Virgin Islands. The Naked Turtle never touches the inside of oak barrels, and is bottled “naked” allowing the naturally delicious rum character to shine through, producing crisp, great tasting rum that goes down smooth. It looks clear and crisp, and smells like rum with subtle hints of vanilla. The Naked Turtle mixes well with everything. Signature cocktails include the Naked Cola, the Naked Daiquiri, the Naked Colada as well as a host of other delicious drinks made naked. Not surprisingly, The Naked Turtle is a big fan of sea turtles, and they have partnered with the Sea Turtle Conservancy to raise awareness and protect them.

“Live Life to Discover” Story and photos by Melissa and Al Martino

“Live Life to Discover” is the Renaissance Hotel group’s slogan, which seems fitting, as every hotel in the group is different. You can be pleasantly surprised by booking all Renaissance as you travel and not having any déjà vu moments. We had the occasion to visit the beautifully renovated (to the tune of $50M and five years) Renaissance SeaWorld Resort when in Orlando, and although it takes it’s theme from SeaWorld (which is directly across the road) it is not at all “theme-parky.” This Renaissance property is sophisticated urban chic. The only real nod to SeaWorld is a large orca whale mural (with no text on it), and some lovely waterfall features. That, and an aquarium theme by the center bar. Renaissance creates a vibe to fit in with whatever locale they are in. The Renaissance SeaWorld resort has 781 guestrooms and 65 suites, which surround a huge atrium that is sunny by day, and romantically lit by night. A lot of the hotel’s action takes place in the atrium, with the Mist Sushi & Spirits Bar taking center stage. Comfortable conversational chairs dot the floor for chatting or reading, and sections can be set aside for parties and events. This resort is an event planners dream as there are so many variables both outside and inside for large and small groups. The Renaissance has an app available to meeting planners to be in touch with every department at the hotel at the touch of a finger.

Our very spacious king junior suite was plush and tastefully decorated with sofas and chairs in warm tones, and a most comfortable bed. A large flat screen TV dominated one wall, and was tuned to gorgeous underwater sea life film accompanied by soothing music when we arrived. There was even a work desk, which, on this trip, did not tempt us at all. Relaxation was our theme. Although Orlando has so many restaurants to choose from, there is no need to travel past the resort’s front door, as they have many varied restaurants right on property. From the Palms Bar & Grill by the pool, to the Tradewinds in the atrium (open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner) to the Boardwalk, which a trendy sports bar. Food is locally sourced, even most of the fish is from Florida. All the restaurants offer gluten free menus for those that desire it. Best of all is the R Kitchen, a private dining experience set up in advance for smaller groups, that is utterly delightful. We had the privilege of enjoying this concierge-level experience on our trip. Sous Chef Michael Cutter created a special dinner for us in the intimate counter-style seating facing his gleaming stainless steel open kitchen. He pulled out all the stops with preparing our favorite foods all while our favorite music was piped in. Pampered? You betcha! The R Kitchen is unique to the Renaissance SeaWorld property, and is also used for interactive cooking classes. Renaissance SeaWorld has a large property, beautifully landscaped with walkways through lush vegetation. You won’t be able to get the kids away from The R-Aqua Zone water park with so many fun water games.

Long Way to the Top: Hard Rock in Orlando 1977-1985 at the Orange County Regional History Center thru May 31

www.thehistorycenter.org/ The Orange County Regional History Center, downtown Orlando’s history museum, announces Long Way to the Top: Hard Rock in Orlando, 19771985, an exhibition of central Florida’s cultural, musical, and economic history opening April 4 and running through May 31. The exhibition narrates a unique era in Orlando history,

when the greatest names in pop, rock, and heavy metal came to the City Beautiful to record and perform. In the late 1970s and early ‘80s, Orlando shook off the disco fad and cemented its place as a rock and roll town. Big name rock acts played at venues like the Tangerine Bowl’s Rock Superbowl – and big names recorded and mixed their tracks here, too. Recording studios like Bee Jay Records drew heavy-hitting rock acts to Orlando, and Central Floridians came to the shows in droves. Explore yesterday’s concert venues and the state-of-the-art Bee Jay Recording Studios, where major bands like Judas Priest and Molly Hatchet mixed platinum records. See vintage recording studio relics and artifacts of Orlando’s rock and roll history. Experiment with tracks on an interactive mixing board.

Undiscovered Luxury:

The Edgewater Beach Hotel in Naples Story and photos by Joyce LaFray

T

here is no richer sensory experience than a trip to the sub-tropics. Just close your eyes and let your imagination transport you to a place where amazing sunsets are a daily happening, balmy breezes gently caress swaying grand palms, and crystal clear waters lap soft white sandy beaches. Add to this luxury accommodations and juicy fruits, verdant greens, and the fragrance of local cuisine and there you have it, the recipe for an unforgettable trip to Naples, Florida!

A

nd perhaps one of the best places to experience such luxury is at one of Florida’s best kept secrets: The Edgewater Beach Hotel in Naples. This lovely boutique getaway on the Gulf of Mexico is an intimate retreat that includes resort-style amenities beyond compare. A welcome bonus is their close proximity to Naples’ eclectic shopping, entertainment and state-of-the-art dining options.

My “half-tank” trip was only a few hours ride from my home in downtown St. Petersburg. It took me longer than expected to find the hotel. The truth be told, I was looking for a flashier façade —you know, one with a stately promenade and heavy signage typical to most Florida resorts — certainly not one hidden in the calm, soothing colors of the sub-tropics where one barely might notice that yes, there is a hotel here! This comfy but oh-so luxurious retreat has been recently renovated head to toe, from the modest façade in a residential- like setting to the inviting crystal-clear pool area. Room designs are chic, what you might call “modern coastal,” with splendid hardwood floors and state-of-the-art glass balconies. Taupe colored walls, sea blue accents, and crispy white duvets compel one to indulge in the serenity of each and every moment. There are 125 spacious one-and two-bedroom suites with a much updated kitchen, granite breakfast bar, and/ or separate dining areas. Add the fragrant ambience of inviting sea breezes, a night or two of in-suite dining and for sure you know that nirvana is possible. Want to kick it up a notch? The hotel’s new Serenity Suites provide aromatherapy, custom lighting, a plush mattress with luxury organic bedding, yoga mats, Bose stereo, meditation CDs, a NutriBullet Pro blender, massage therapy, meditation, even wellness coaching. The Coast restaurant, with a most talented chef, features coastal cuisines from around the world. Dine alfresco by the pool, or if you prefer to drink your lunch there’s always the cozy Pool Bar that offers specialty tropical drinks and refreshing ales and wines. Meals are prepared with indigenous ingredients— from mango-infused entrees to real Key Lime pie — and are a harbinger of grander gustatory delights to come. (Don’t miss the fresh fish!) I spent much of my time at the ocean-side swimming pool, the fullyequipped Fitness Center, and mornings slowly jogging along the surf. At night, fresh “Cookies and Milk” are offered just before retiring. And you can be sure the dedicated staff is always close by. Not only is the Edgewater a perfect venue for a romantic rendezvous, but a great place for a family vacation or a special occasion family dinner.

Ask about the new Reno Celebration Package that coincides with the debut of the completed suites. Explore the delights of Florida’s sub-tropics by discovering one of my favorite hotels. DEAL ME IN with Mark Pilarski www.markpilarski.com/ Dear Mark: When the casino is not too crowded, I will usually play two 25¢ slot machines at once. I will usually put between $20 and $40 in each, and when one machine dries up on credits, I stick with the remaining credits on the second machine. On my last casino outing, and the first machine out of credits, I got lucky and hit for $500 on the second machine. I decided against putting another $20 in the machine I had been previously playing. Maybe I should have. A young gal sat down and within a few minutes hit a $4,000 jackpot. I told her I had just been playing that machine, and she responded, sympathetically, “Had you kept playing it, the $4,000 would have been yours.” I believe that you disagree with that statement and have written so in the past. Could you please reaffirm my reservations that the $4,000 was not really mine? Joyce K. You might have nailed the casino for 500 buckaroos, Joyce, but that particular $4,000 was never to be yours, even if you had continued to play on that machine all along. For you to reap that 4K jackpot, you would have had to push the spin button at the same micro-second that the play who won did. Any change in your timing would yield an entirely different result. With the RNG (random number generator) always crunching possibilities, with millions of numbers polled every second, the result is calculated at the exact millisecond that you press the play button. That information is then sent to an electronic chip to synchronize a particular halting point for each reel. Almost certainly, Joyce, you would have started your spin nowhere near the same instant the young gal did, so the $4,000 jackpot would not have appeared, hence your results would have been completely different. You did pocket the $500 and walk, right! www.AccentOnTampaBay.com

TAMPA MUSEUM OF ART

American Chronicles: The Art of Norman Rockwell - thru May 31 www.tampamuseum.org

One of the most popular American artists of the past century, Norman Rockwell (1894–1978) was a keen observer of human nature and a gifted storyteller. For nearly seven decades, while history was in the making all around him, Rockwell chronicled our changing society in the small details and nuanced scenes of ordinary people in everyday life, providing a personalized interpretation—albeit often an idealized one—of American identity. His depictions offered a reassuring visual haven during a time of momentous transformation as our country evolved into a complex, modern society. Rockwell’s contributions to our visual legacy, many of them now icons of American culture, have found a permanent place in our national psyche. A Quartet of Quilt and Textile Exhibits from Across the Globe

May 29 - Aug 16 Nearly everyone remembers sleeping under a quilt made by their mother or grandmother, and many of those quilts were made from time-honored traditional quilt designs. Today’s quiltmakers take those designs as departure points for works that are often inspired by nature, personal or world events. Quilt National: 2013 is an exhibit of 22 selected works from as close as Virginia and as far away as Australia. These are not your grandmother’s quilts. Many of the works hold fast to the traditional methods of piecing and patching. At the same time, however, these artists are intrigued by the challenge of expanding the boundaries of traditional quilt making by utilizing the newest materials and technologies. furniture, metalwork, block prints, pottery, and tiles made during the first two decades of the 20th century, a period of significant design reform throughout America. Objects on display include works by American icons such as Gustav Stickley’s Craftsman Workshops, the Grueby Faience Company, Rookwood Pottery, Louis Comfort Tiffany, and other makers. These objects provide insight into an international impulse to sweep away the past and create a modern style for the new century. Inspired by nature, designers and artists rejected formality in favor of celebrating the curve of a leaf, the clarity of wood grain, the simple joy of children at play. Heavy embellishment and gilded surfaces were replaced with clean lines, non-precious materials, and organic form and color. Function and fine craftsmanship became integral to aesthetic choice. And above all, the restorative power of a simple home environment was emphasized over conspicuous consumption.

Dali & da Vinci: Minds, Machines & Masterpieces at the Dali Museum thru July 26 TheDali.org/davinci

The new exhibit features works and reproductions, including reproductions of da Vinci diagrams, Dali manuscripts and paintings from the permanent collection, and reproductions of the invented objects both da Vinci and Dalí proposed in advance of their times. The exhibit shows how these two great artists shared an ambition to use the tools of art to explore the whole of the human experience, including math, anatomy, motion devices, religion, and visual perspective. They both imagined fantastical devices and inventions, some of which became reality, while others remained sealed in sketches and manuscripts. Visitors explore thematic groupings that demonstrate the range of shared themes, interests, and ongoing dialogue between the two across the centuries.

Flowers speak volumes in Fine Art

H

istory has produced some famous artists who were also avid gardeners. For instance, Impressionist painter Claude Monet (French, 1840-1926) and his colleague, Auguste Renoir (French, 1841-1911) tended flower and herb gardens at their famous artist colony of Argenteuil, France in the early 1870s. At Monet’s home in Giverny, France, the artist enlisted the aid of fellow gardeners to care for his famous water lily pond which was the subject for his paintings from the early 1890s until his death in 1926. A few years ago, one of Monet’s famed water lilly oil on canvas paintings, dated 1917, sold for $24.7 million. Imogen Cunningham and Georgia O’Keeffe of the famous early modernist art circle active in California and New York both were gardeners who brought their love of flowers and plants into their mature works of art. For instance, Cunningham’s modernist photographs focused on native flowers, leaves, branches, etc. Her famous Magnolia Blossom: Tower of Jewels held the record for the highest price ever paid for a photograph at auction. Georgia O’Keeffe painted desert flowers and other majestic blooms throughout her long and illustrious artistic career including cactus flowers, poppies, jack in the pulips, and various types of lilies. In addition to these famous gardeners, there are many references to flowers in art. Different flowers mean different things when depicted as subjects in works of fine art and antiques throughout the ages. Flowers often reference the bounty of plants, herbs, flowers, trees, nuts, and fruits that were found in the New World. Flowers were highlighted in embroidered and hooked rugs made in New England during the early Colonial period. Likewise, Baltimore album quilts showed an abundance of plants and flowers when the art form peaked in popularity from 1846 to 1852. Some album quilts with embroidered flowers have sold for $40,000 to $50,000. In the 17th Century, Dutch still life paintings of flower, particularly tulips, were all the rage. The realistic method of painting flowers was important to artists of the period. The artists, so intrigued by the forms of the flowers, that they showed little regard for the season in which a

78

particular flower grew. In these paintings, tulips would be depicted in a Delft vase along with carnations, iris, hibiscus, zinnias, dahlias, and roses even if the various flowers bloomed at different times of the year. The preeminent female Dutch baroque artist of this brand of still life painting, Rachel Ruysch, painted an oil composition of Honeysuckle and Other Flowers in a Blue Glass Vase that Impressionist flower sold for $690,600 at auction. The color of particular flowvase painting ers offer special meaning when found in flower gardens. For instance, lilies, white in color, are associated with the Virgin Mary, purity, and chastity. They are the flower of choice at Easter Sunday and on the feast day of the Virgin Mary. Deep orange, dark red, and gold chrysanthemums were brought from China to Marseilles, France in 1789 and were hybridized in many forms. In Asia, mums are held in high esteem and associated with long life. One of the best known paintings of these blooms is Edgar Degas’ Woman with Chrysanthemums from 1865 in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The Dutch were charmed by carnations and often included them in watercolor albums documenting botanical examples. The carnation signified faithful love in marriage. Dutch masters including Rembrandt painted these and other flowers in wedding portraits of brides and grooms. Carnations are also carved into Dutch style corner linen cupboards of hardwoods. These cupboards were traditional gifts to newlyweds setting up housekeeping. On today’s market, the old master paintings are worth far more than the antiques Dutch cupboards. As flowers speak volumes, you can highlight some of your favorite blossoms by collecting art and antiques with flowers in focus. Happy Spring!
