FATHOM EVENTS at SELECT CINEMAS: Bolshoi Ballet: Don Quixote” - April 10. “Don Quixote,” is based on Cervantes’ eccentric hero’s journey in search of his perfect woman. This ballet, famous for its bravura dancing and spectacular technical feats, is choreographed by Marius Petipa and Alexander Gorsky to a score by Ludwig Minkus. BILL - April 11. To commemorate the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, BILL tells the tale of how hapless lute player Bill Shakespeare leaves home to follow his dream. When his bandmates kick him out of their group, Bill leaves his wife and kids behind to seek fame and fortune in the big city of London. He’s written a great work for the stage and he’s certain he’ll prove all his doubters wrong. Laughter abounds in this offbeat Monty Python-esque farce. Renoir – Revered and Reviled - April 21. Based on the Barnes Foundation’s collection and directed by Phil Grabsky, Renoir—Revered and Reviled uncovers the rarely told story of Renoir’s artistic reinvention following his rejection of Impressionism in the early 1890s, and explores its profound implications for both Picasso and Matisse.

OLIVE THE WORLD BISTRO A Tasting Experience

by Barbara McGovern

T

he downtown restaurant scene is really heating up in Tarpon Springs. What? You didn’t know that there was a restaurant scene in Tarpon? Well there is, and it has grown quite a bit in the past few months. Three new restaurants have opened and two more are planned for the coming year. This will give everyone a chance to enjoy a wide variety of food to choose from. Foodies rejoice! The first new one is Olive The World Bistro on Hibiscus St., right behind the Greek Church. It is unique, evoking the type of small bistros that you would find in Italy or Germany. Chris and Gini, the owners, lived and traveled in Europe for many years, all the while discovering the tastes of each region. When they decided to return home they wanted to create a concept that spoke to them. They found Tarpon was the place to do it and found just the right spot. It is a cozy space with about 28 seats — a place to gather with friends and enjoy the intimate and friendly vibe of Europe. The food is wonderful, it’s all made in house to order, and only the finest ingredients are used. They offer interesting salads, appetizers, fresh linguini dishes and ravioli. They have excellent Panini on amazing bread

26

that is baked locally. They have everything from the classics like Pesto Pasta and Smoked Salmon, to Charcuterie Boards with a daily variety of specials including soups and stews made from scratch. They also have something you won’t find except maybe in New England, REAL lobster rolls made in the traditional Maine style. One of the specials is the traditional Belgian Mussels in wine sauce — one of our daughter’s favorites. My favorite so far has been the Pasta with Smoked Salmon, artichokes, capers, green olive and baby kale. Also, we always make sure to leave some room for their incredible Holi-Moli Cheesecakes. As the name suggests, olive oil is a huge part of the whole experience. There are over 30 Extra Virgin Olive Oils (EVOO’s) and Balsamics to sample with the fabulous meals. Each tends to elevate the dish to another level as you learn which EVOO’s and Balsamics you enjoy. All of the products are also bottled in house and are available for retail sale as well. There are both domestic and imported products, with a very special new oil from Florida. The Bistro is the only place you can get them so far in the area. Olive oil is something Florida has been working to develop for some time. The plan is to create a new agricultural crop in the Sunshine State and plant huge olive groves. Olive The World Bistro is a great place to come and have a glass of wine, or one of their special beers. The Bistro also holds specialty themed evenings, like “Raclette Rocks the Bistro,” which is held once per month. This is a reservation only evening. They are also considering a Tapas Night. They will also soon be offering a selection of rubs and spices. Look for the lovely gift baskets that Gini makes to order that would make a great hostess or house warming gift. Contact them for more details at: info@olivetheworldbistro.com. A visit to Olive The World Bistro is like going to a friends house. Enjoy a lovely visit, eat great food and get to know Chris and Gini. For more information, visit www.olivetheworldbistro.com

TRAVELOGUE

Innisbrook

Golf & Spa Resort Story and Photos by Melissa Wolcott Martino

I

love Florida. I love the feel of Florida, and that includes the images one conjures up of the palm trees and sandy beaches of the Tampa Bay area. But I also love the diversity of Florida, where you can take a short drive in Tampa to an area that is not sandy beaches and palm trees, but looks and feels more like Georgia and points north. I’m talking about the Innisbrook Resort — land of tall pine trees, old oaks, Spanish moss, and golf....lots of golf.

nnisbrook Golf and Spa Resort recently hosted the Valspar Championship PGA Golf Tournament, and proved once again to be the ideal location for this annual event (25 years now). Although rain threatened the weekend, it fortunately never really materialized. Charl Schwartzel ended up taking home the prize. Innisbrook has four courses, with several being quite challenging. The popular Copperhead course is the one used for the Championship game, with it’s notorious “Snake Pit” final holes provoking a love/hate relationship with golfers (mostly love.) In fact, the pros rank Innisbrook as one of their top favorite courses on the PGA tour. Courses were designed by the renowned golf course designer, Larry Packard, back in 1972, and Copperhead was just refurbished using the original Packard plans. Golf may be the main draw to choose to stay at Innisbrook, but I found it to be great for couples and families alike, whether you enjoy golf or not. The sprawling 900-acre resort has plenty to offer.

ccommodations include deluxe guestrooms, executive suites, 1 bedroom suites and 2 bedroom suites, so you can make yourself really at home. My husband and I had a spacious 1 bedroom suite in the St Andrews section, which was really a well appointed condo with a living and dining room, full kitchen, and a patio overlooking the beautiful Copperhead course. All the accommodation sections are named after famous golf courses and are in alphabetical order, so it makes it easier to navigate around the large property.

here are several dining options at the resort. Packard’s Steakhouse serves breakfast, lunch and dinner overlooking the Copperhead Golf Course. It is known for fine steaks and seafood. The Market Salamander Grille serves fresh seasonal American cuisine with inside and outside patio dining, and is also open breakfast, lunch and dinner. We sampled both during our stay, and the food was excellent. We also chose to have breakfast every morning outside on the patio at the Turnberry Pub which overlooks the scenic Island golf course. Really tasty omelettes! There are several more spots to eat on property (not to mention some fun bars) and a take-and-go at the Market (which will even make a picnic basket up for you.)

am not a golfer. However, when offered the chance to have a lesson with a pro, I decided to give it a go. I must say, PGA Pro golfer Dawn Mercer has a LOT of patience. I don’t think I could have been much worse starting out, but she is so tuned in to what each person needs to work on and is so encouraging, that I started to feel like “the little engine that could.” While taking the lesson with some other ladies, and looking out at the lovely landscape, I thought what a fun time and place Innisbrook would be for a girlfriend getaway. I still may not be much of a golfer, but I am most certainly a Spa-er, and relished a visit to the Indaba Spa which is located next to the Copperhead course. I may have had the best massage ever under the magical and skilled hands of “Catey.” The spa is lovely and calming, and also complete with a large array of treatment offerings, including a couples massage area.

n addition to the aforementioned golf, Innisbrook has tennis courts and 6 pools — including the Loch Ness Monster pool which kids just love. It has sand beaches, waterfall, slides, water volleyball, sand volleyball, and family activities hosted by the staff. If you really want to go to the beach while staying at the resort, they offer complimentary transportation to Honeymoon Island Beach. Innisbrook has obviously given much thought to preserving their gorgeous old trees and natural surroundings. They even have a nature walk which takes you along a boardwalk to a small lake inhabited by shore birds, turtles and an occasional alligator. Along the path you will pass a tree that is growing over the walk. It is a Dahoon Holly, and it is designated the oldest known tree of it’s species in the U.S.A. by the American Forests Foundation. Since the property is so large, the resort has made it easy to get around with complimentary shuttles that pick you up at your building and take you wherever you wish to go within the resort. Once you arrive at Innisbrook, you never really need to use your car until you leave.

Innisbrook is loaded with wonderful old oak trees. 34

eautiful – The Carole King Musical tells the inspiring true story of King’s remarkable rise to stardom, from being part of a hit songwriting team with her husband Gerry Goffin, to her relationship with fellow writers and best friends Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, to becoming one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history. Bonefish Grill New Look, Same Great Taste Photos and story by Melissa Wolcott and Al Martino

B

onefish Grill opened their first restaurant right in our St. Petersburg neighborhood 16 years ago. Fast forward to today and there are now numerous restaurants located in 37 states, with the 51 of them in Florida alone. Our neighborhood B.F.G. moved across the street to a bigger location some years back (to handle the crowds that lined up nightly outside.) Since it is one of our favorite dining spots, we still frequent it often. We also visit the South Tampa location when we find ourselves over in that area. Recently, B.F.G.’s locations have undergone some renovations to accommodate the changing preferences of their patrons and attract new ones. They have utilized space more efficiently and created a warmer ambiance. Muted woods and directional lighting create an inviting atmosphere, and clever sea-themed sculptures adorn the walls.

B

onefish has an extremely palate pleasing menu, with a lot of wonderful wood-grilled market-fresh seafood offerings and some landlubber delights as well. They offer different specials every night in addition to their regular menu. The most popular special at the moment seems to be the Misoyaki Chilean Sea Bass, which is grilled over oak, then topped with misoyaki marinade, pickled ginger relish, and served on a bed of sautéed spinach, mushrooms, and jasmine rice. The wine list is well thought out, and their Martinis are fun and tasty. That is not just our opinion, the restaurant placed First for Quality in the 2016 Consumers’ Choice Awards.

A few of our favorites on B.F.G’s innovative menu are their signature Bang Bang Shrimp appetizer, Chilean Sea Bass served with a choice of five different sauces, and the Fontina Pork Chop with an amazing sauce of Fontina cheese, garlic, prosciutto and mushroom Marsala Wine. Whatever entree you choose, the Potatoes Au Gratin is an excellent choice for a side dish. The house salad of greens, hearts of palm, olives, tomatoes and pine nuts with herb vinaigrette is a pleaser as well. Dessert of Créme Brulée or a Macadamia Nut Brownie is a must.

ne thing is definite — friendly service and excellent food quality is consistent throughout the brand’s locations. No matter how full the restaurant is, service is always well paced — no long wait between courses, yet not rushed. We have always found their prices to be very reasonable, which is another reason the restaurant does so well. That being said, B.F.G. currently has a great deal on Tuesdays, with their promotion “Hooked On Tuesday,” which offers a 3-course menu of salad, entree, and dessert starting at only $14.90. On Wednesdays, take advantage of their $6 Bang Bang Shrimp offer. (Check out their website for changing specials.) Spring Cleaning Tips S

pring cleaning has its drawbacks and its advantages. The drawbacks are obvious nobody really likes to clean. Once the task is complete, the advantages to spring cleaning include additional storage space, discovering items that you thought you lost, and some quick cash if you work to sell some of your unwanted stuff online. In the world of art and antiques, spring cleaning is a great opportunity to review the condition of objects, repurpose items, sort out what to keep and what to sell, and reconsider a collection’s display options within your home. Here are some tips for your own spring cleaning when it comes to antiques: Don’t be too hasty to clean a painting. Many people automatically want to clean an old painting when many paintings just don’t need to be cleaned. If a painting only has minor evidence of surface dirt but no evidence of yellowing varnish, consider leaving the painting alone. Never clean a painting using soap and water as this will dry out the pigment and the canvas and lead to pigment flaking and damage over time.

the point where the under metalusually copperis showing through the silver.

Glass jars and bottles require special care when cleaning. For cloudy glass jars and bottles, use equal parts of white vinegar and distilled water and wash gently. Try to avoid using any harsh chemicals or cleaning agents on your antique items. Do not submerge any glass item into standing water that is too cold or too hot as this shock to the system may result in cracking your antique or vintage glass item. Don’t be overzealous when cleaning silver pieces including silver plate. Basically, as you clean or polish sterling silver or silver plate, you rub off a layer of the metal’s sheen. Try to polish silver and silver plate items like tea trays, water pitchers, and frames, no more than once or twice a year. Use appropriate white cotton cloths and recommended polish. Be gentle when polishing silver plate so you don’t rub the silver off to

The tools that you use during spring cleaning of your art or antiques are just as important as the cleaning supplies and techniques. Q-tips or cotton swabs can be very helpful to get into those tight or rough places. Cloths that do not leave textile or cotton residue behind are also the desirable cleaning choice when it comes to antiques and art. And, don’t forget to do your spring cleaning of fragile collectibles while seated at a table and when you are not tired or in a hurry. Happy spring cleaning! Getaway

Story by Melissa Wolcott Martino and Al Martino

This may sound unconventional, but it is possible to travel to Walt Disney World Resort for several days, never visit one of the theme parks, and have a perfectly wonderful time! We do it often.

alt Disney World is massive, with endless entertainment possibilities besides the parks. There are so many resorts with different themes and ambiances that you can return many times and have a completely different experience each time. Most kids are as happy as a clam to spend hours in the many interactive pools offered at the various resorts anyway.

Dining choices are unending, ranging from simple hot dogs at a pool, to the finest upscale restaurants sprinkled throughout the complex. There are also specialty dining experiences like Hoop de Doo at the Fort Wilderness Resort, the Luau at the Polynesian Village Resort, and so many more. And, of course, there is Downtown Disney, which has been re-birthed as Disney Springs. There have been a lot of additions, with new shops, restaurants, and plenty of things for the kids to entertain themselves.

e recently checked in to the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Hotel for a non-park going visit. This time we stayed on the Swan side, but we’ve experienced both and they are equally delightful — and a little different from each other. Whichever hotel you choose, as a guest you are welcome to use any facilities in the other one. It’s only a short walk between the two. The hotels charm both kids and adults alike with their 5 pools, a white sand beach, gorgeous landscaping and water features, health clubs, the Mandara Spa, and restaurants. Guest rooms at the Swan have recently been revitalized with new appointments: a 42-inch flat screen TV, mini-refrigerator and a supercomfy pillow-top mattress. We had a spacious L-shaped corner alcove room with windows on two sides allowing for a lot of light. The decor is contemporary with warm grays and whites, and a splash of azure blue. Love the bedside lamps with the usb chargers in them!

e dined at the hotel restaurants and also at Disney Springs, and all of our meals were excellent. Celebrity Chefs had our main attention, with Todd English’s Bluezoo in the Dolphin Resort, and Wolfgang Puck’s Dining Room at the Grand Cafe at Disney Springs.

Miyachiku Wagyu Beef with burgundy truffles, braised figs, onions, and bordelaise sauce.

Bluezoo has a quiet elegance, and a menu to match. Some memorable dishes were the Seared Heritage Pork Belly with brussels sprouts and bacon vinaigrette appetizer, and the entree of Miyachiku Wagyu Beef with burgundy truffles, braised figs, onions, and bordelaise sauce. The Flaming Burnt Orange cocktail is a delicious and fun drink to order.

BLUEZOO

Wolfgang Puck’s Dining Room is colorful and lively, and overlooks the large Disney Springs Lake. The menu is a combination of Asian and Californian cuisine. We ordered the very fresh Spinach Salad with onion, chopped egg, almonds, blue cheese and warm bacon dressing. The Florida catch of the day was swordfish, and it was seasoned, grilled, and served over lemon-bean ragout with roasted tomato and herb gremolata. The superb Pan Roasted Half Chicken was served with mustard roasted potatoes, and broccoli rabe. For breakfast we chose to eat at the Dolphin’s Fresh Mediterranean Market, where you can dine buffet style or from a menu. Running the whole show (culinary-wise) at the Swan and Dolphin is Executive Chef Robert Ciborowski. He oversees 17 restaurants and lounges and a banquet operation. His culinary experience includes some very prestigious restaurants, such as The French Laundry in Napa Valley, and The Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas. It was at one of his innovations at the Dolphin — Cib’s Smokehouse pop-up poolside restaurant — that we got to sample some of his scrumptious barbecue creations. His fall-off-the-bone ribs are served Memphis style, cooked over cherrywood and hickory for 5 1/2 hours. The brisket in the BLT (brisket, lettuce and tomato) is cooked Oklahoma style, in a pit and smoked for 18 hours.

ome things in Disney Springs have remained after the renewal, the most important being Cirque du Soleil’s La Nouba show, located on the Spring’s West Side. We have seen a lot of Cirque shows through the years in Las Vegas and Tampa, but La Nouba remains one of our favorites. It may not be the splashiest, but has all the ingredients that make it a riveting show, and concentrates on the amazing athleticism of its performers. We were at the opening back in 1998, and have returned many times through the years. We were fortunate on our recent visit to get a backstage glimpse of the mind-boggling workings of the show. There are about 65 artists on the show from 17 different countries, and they each do their own masterful makeup. The athletes perform an astonishing 10 shows a week, and some new acts have been added, one incorporating break dancing, and another “Aerial Bamboo” (an extremely difficult act utilizing a pole-shaped apparatus suspended from the ceiling, with attached loops used for a variety of stunts). Thirty percent of the show has now changed, with clever new clowns also changing the rhythm of the show — all under the talented expertise of artistic director Daniel Ross. La Nouba is now in it’s 16th year and this past January welcomed it’s 10 millionth guest! It is always evolving, so you can return to be amazed again and again. If you haven’t seen it, you should definitely put it on your mustsee list.

ne of the things the Orlando area is well known for, besides the theme parks, is shopping! Lots of big name outlet stores dot the landscape, as well as upscale malls. We hopped over to the famous Mall at Millenia to good ol’ Macy’s. New stuff is going on there as well. Macy’s new brand — I.N.C., is a lifestyle brand that features runway-inspired fashion forward clothing and accessories, along with some home goods. Macy’s has also added Michael Kors and Chanel lines. Do hit the 3rd floor for a visit to the Nespresso Boutique for a free coffee sample. You can get a 10% discount at Macy’s Visitor Center, so make sure you stop by, or print out a voucher from the internet (see below for website.) Did you know that you can have your own “Personal Shopper” (for both men and women) at Macy’s and that it’s complimentary? You can schedule an appointment with a stylist, and she will have clothing options waiting for you when you arrive at the store. There’s no pressure to buy whatsoever, so it’s a pleasant and time saving experience. We met with Stylist Kayleen Mishler, and she was right on top of what’s happening in the fashion world, and what works for the individual customer, considering personality and needs.

DEAL ME IN with Mark Pilarski www.markpilarski.com/ The machine is random – the payout is fixed Dear Mark: I believe in the theory that slot machines do not act in a random manner but are fixed to pay out at the leisure of casino management. I just can’t believe it can be any other way. Fred C. Total agreement here, Fred. Slot machines are fixed, but not for the reason you suspect. That said, with any luck, my parallel analogy should dispel your theory that slot machines are rigged. I hope that this will be your “waking up from the Matrix” moment. For starters, Fred, can we at least come to an agreement that every time you flip a coin, its outcome is random? Now, Fred, humor me with some back-and-forth wagering. First, one simple rule. At $1 a flip, every time you win, I will graciously pay you 80 cents. 98

Hong Kong Cafe Now Open at The Palazzo Las Vegas www.palazzo.com The Hong Kong Café is now open and serving lunch, dinner and late night dishes at The Palazzo. The allnew restaurant is brought to life with a dynamic fusion of Asian cuisine and Western fare. Signature dishes include rice roll with XO sauce; Macau-style roasted pork belly; fried fish ball with curry; Chinese sausage and preserved pork belly over steamed white rice; panseared scallop with Szechuan pepper sauce; and Vietnamese King Seafood noodle soup; to name a few. In addition, the restaurant also features regional Chinese cuisine, drawing from Cantonese, Taiwanese, Vietnamese, Szechuan and other Asian cooking styles.

When I win, you grudgingly must pay me $1. Slot machines, like my coin flipping scenario, operate the same way. A cybernetic one-armed bandit doesn’t get its edge from being nonrandom, but by setting payout rules such that the money taken in is more than the money paid out. It’s just that simple, Fred. Dear Mark: It is bad enough that where I play that they only pay 6-5 for a blackjack on a hand-shuffled game, but, it also seems that I get far less than my fair share of them. Is there a certain amount of blackjacks that I should be getting over a two-hour period on a single-deck game? Jeff R. With any luck, Jeff, NONE, as my goal is to influence you to refrain from playing a 6-5 game in the first place. More on that “none” in a moment. Under typical playing conditions, you can expect to get a blackjack once every 21 hands. Assuming a gambling timeline of two hours, you should be dealt 100 hands per hour, 200 hands total. By receiving a blackjack once every 21 hands, you should theoretically get approximately 10 blackjacks over a two-hour period. www.AccentOnTampaBay.com

Streaks, of course, happen, so you may experience more or fewer in a two-hour period. Still, on average, Jeff, you can plan on getting 10. The reason that I am rooting for you getting none is that you should never play any blackjack game, single deck included, which only pays 6-5, instead of 3-2 for a blackjack. The drawback of the 6-5 game is that if you bet $10 and get a blackjack, you receive only $12 instead of $15. Those 10 blackjacks are costing you $3 a pop. Forking over an extra $30 to the house for the privilege of playing on a hand shuffled game isn’t worth it. Unfortunately, the uneducated are flocking to 6-5 single-deck games because they erroneously believe that a single-deck blackjack game offers the best odds. That is true when a blackjack pays 3-2. But, the payoff difference spirals from 0.15% with perfect play to a casino advantage 1.45% when you inadvertently accept the reduced blackjack payout 6-5 payoff. The big winner of this sizable differential payoff will always be the house, never you.

Arcopedico Super Comfortable Mary Janes www.arcopedicoshoes.com/

A

rcopedico is a high-quality women’s comfort shoe brand specializing in lightweight, anatomicallydesigned, arch- and circulation-supporting shoes that are hand-made in Portugal. They have a wide variety of shoes to choose from, and I especially like my navy Leina model Mary Janes (pictured here), which weigh just 5 oz. a pair, and are amazingly comfortable. A Lytech upper with an elastic strap ensures an easy on and off, and a secure fit. The removable cushioned insole keeps your feet feeling comfortable and gives you the option to accommodate your own custom orthotics. This shoe also has a polyurethane outsole for plenty of durability. Think traveling, shopping — or just padding around the house. They also come in grey, beige, black, brown, purple and red, with very cool slight shimmer. The shoe is vegan, machine washable, air dry. Once you put them on, you may never want to take them off. Visit the Arcopedico website to see all the other models and colors in this very comfortable line.

reat style starts with quality staples. A well-made pair of jeans can transform a look – that’s where Mott & Bow steps in. This premium and affordable collection of men’s denim, is made from the finest Turkish fabrics and utilizes a hand crafted finishing process to provide a style with the perfect fit. Exemplify cool simplicity with over six washes, styles and fits. At Mott & Bow, they handcraft every finishing process of their jeans and make it look effortless. A lot of the cost of a premium jean is attributed to the amount of labor intensity in the finishing process. If the wash formula consists of resin application, each jean is either sprayed or immersed into a resin mix (the two processes create different looks and feels). And everything that goes through the resin process must be pre-cured and then cured afterwards in an oven. Jeans are scraped in different areas to replicate the distress of normal use. The brand also offers an at home try on program, where customers can order two pairs for the price of one and return the extra pair free of charge, to ensure the right size every time. Old Sturbridge Village, Massachusetts Covered Bridge

M

ore than 1,000 covered bridges were built in New England in the 19th and early 20th centuries; today, fewer than 200 survive. The covered bridge at Old Sturbridge Village is one of only 12 left in Massachusetts. It is distinctive because of its lattice truss design. Facing destruction from new highway construction in Vermont, it was moved to the Village in 1951. The bridge was first located 100 yards north of where it is today. It was moved to its present location after Hurricane Diane knocked it off its abutments in 1955.

Bridges were covered to protect them from the elements so they would last longer. In the winter, snow was often shoveled into covered bridges so horse-drawn sleighs could glide through them smoothly.
