This screening will benefit families of officers killed in the line of duty and feature post-show audience discussion with filmmaker Thomas Marchese. These fallen heroes deserve a voice, as do their families, loved ones and partners who are struggling to pick up the pieces these tragedies leave behind. For the past 5 years, a production crew comprised of both film industry and public safety professionals has been traveling to police agencies across the country, large and small, urban and rural, candidly interviewing family members, command staff, line officers, city officials and the public in areas that have lost officers. Along the way, they have captured intimate accounts of heroism and loss. Through the words of those who have lived alongside these tragedies, these stories will be told. Cindy Roberts – widow of Tampa Police Corporal Michael Roberts, who was killed in the line of duty in August 2009 – will introduce the film. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the West Central Florida chapter of Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.). Following the screening, Fallen

PETERSBURG’S ART MURAL SCENE EXPANDS TO BEACH DRIVE. Work is underway for Downtown St. Petersburg’s Beach Drive first mural. The burgeoning art scene is one of the things that locals and tourists alike enjoy about downtown St. Petersburg. And since the success of the Shine Festival, outdoor murals have represented a big part of the artistic character and culture of the urban core and beyond. Smith & Associates Real Estate, a longtime supporter of the arts in the Bay area with numerous recognitions for their “extraordinary contributions” has commissioned local artist, Derek Donnelly, to complete an ambitious outdoor mural to adorn their Fourth Street office in downtown St. Petersburg. The mural will transform the Southeast alley wall into a fun, colorful and surreal environment showcasing the unique culture and history of St. Pete. The imagery will be a classic “postcardesque” design with modern flair, highlighting timeless cultural elements of beloved St. Pete. Donnelley’s artwork will be the first outdoor mural to adorn Beach Drive.

Oldsmar Cares For Their Own Story and photos by Barbara Mcgovern

I

love small towns. There are quite a few charming towns in the Tampa Bay Area but I think Oldsmar is unique. They hit all the right buttons. Several years ago Oldsmar was considered rather dull, and it was. Lo and behold, the ugly duckling became a swan. Oldsmar has an amazing dining scene, fine hotels, beautiful new homes and a great commute to Tampa, St. Pete and the beach. One thing that is unique about Oldsmar is the way it takes care of its own. There is a organization in town, Oldsmar Cares, that was started in 1997 by Sharon Patch at the Oldsmar Community United Methodist Church. They provided help to their neighbors in town that needed assistance with rentals and utilities. Soon they added a food pantry that gave out 100,000 pounds of food each year. Over the years they added additional services such as a “clothing closet”, dental services for children, legal counseling, health screening, educational grants, holiday programs and Oldsmar Works, a job service. Last year Oldsmar Cares

26

provided more than $75,000 in food and financial assistance. Oldsmar Cares is an all-volunteer, non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization. For the past several years they held a Wine and Food Gala which has become their main fund raiser. The entire community has supported this and the other events that they hold. This support has helped this amazing organization grow to what it is now. Due to

www.AccentOnTampaBay.com

their success, they have outgrown the tiny cottage and recently, to celebrate their 20th Anniversary, Oldsmar Cares broke ground on a new building so they can continue their mission to help all of their neighbors. The new 3,000 square foot building is being built adjacent to their present location on State Rd 580. The new building will provide more room for food storage, an expanded food pantry, and a bigger Clothes Closet. There will be an area for tutoring children and an office for Career Counseling. A shower and a washer & dryer will also be available. Brenda Gaulin, Vice

Chairperson of Oldsmar Cares, praised all the amazing people in the community who came together to make this new building possible, including the city of Oldsmar who agreed to a 40 year lease of the land that is currently valued at $350,000 at very little cost to Oldsmar Cares, the Russell and Ruth Anderson Charitable Trust, MicroLumen, Tampa Bay Downs, David L Wallace Architects, Bollenback Builders, Northside Engineering, the Rotary Club of Oldsmar/Eastlake, Sorensen family, Sue and Sam Brandon, and Walter Fitzgerald. This Premier group will have their names on the bronze plaque in the new building. The groundbreaking event was held on Friday, June 16. A tent was erected and food and beverage was sponsored by Suegra Tequila Cantina, located at 4022 Tampa Rd., Oldsmar. They supplied great food with unique offerings such as a whole pig which was, by the way, amazing. With $100,000 in funds still left to raise the sales of commemorative bricks, “Raise the Roof T-shirts and building sponsorships are still available. But just when they thought they had it all, they almost lost everything. From international superstardom to life-threatening tragedy, On Your Feet! takes you behind the music and inside the real story of this record-making and groundbreaking couple who, in the face of adversity, found a way to end up on their feet. ED SHEERAN with special guest

James Blunt

Multiple GRAMMY Award-winning Ed Sheeran will make a stop at Tampa’s AMALIE Arena on his world tour. Ed has quickly established himself as one of the world’s biggest musical artists with over 22 million albums sold and 4.7 billion Spotify streams. The tour celebrates Sheeran’s third studio album, “÷.” The album – pronounced “divide” – includes the hit singles, “Shape of You” and “Castle On The Hill,” both of which made chart entries after their simultaneous January release. “Shape of You” debuted at #1 on Billboard’s “Hot 100” – Sheeran’s first time atop the overall chart. Meanwhile, “Castle On The Hill” entered the “Hot 100” at #6, establishing Sheeran as the first artist to ever have two singles make simultaneous top 10 debuts in the chart’s 58-year history. “Shape of You” was quickly certified 2x-platinum by the RIAA, while “Castle on the Hill” earned gold -- the first two songs released in 2017 to achieve RIAA certifications this year.

The Ries Brothers

Talking Tours, First Album & Possible New Members

46

By Jenna Rimensnyder

B

orn and raised in Tampa Bay, The Ries Brothers (pronounced “Rees”), have been taking the nation by storm with their unique sound. The brother duo write and perform their original material influenced by their love of rock, blues, funk, and reggae. The Ries Brothers have toured nationally with the legendary band Chicago as well as opened for Daughtry, Los Lonely Boys, among many others. Charlie, the older brother, provides the lead vocals while simultaneously playing the drums and keyboard bass. Younger brother, Kevin, plays guitar and sings background vocals. I was able to catch up with the duo while they begin their tour with The Pacifiers before making their way up to NYC. What would you two like people to know about the Ries Brothers? We’re a brother Rock ’n’ Roll duo from Tampa Bay, Florida. We take lot of pride in our live shows. We’ve been at this for 5 years, and have been doing a lot of traveling and performing. We’re very excited because our first album is coming out November 10th. We finally made our first full length album which is something we’ve always wanted to do. The album will be available on iTunes, Spotify, Youtube, physical copies, as well as copies on Vinyl. Would you ever consider adding more members to your group? In the future we want to expand to have a drummer and possibly a key player so Kevin can come out front because he’s always back behind the drums, and he can come up front for a couple of songs. Being a duo has helped us a lot because we’ve gotten a lot of opportunities as openers. For instance, with the Chicago tour, they only wanted a two-piece band at most for an easy on, easy off transition. Our goal is to expand so Kevin can be more of a front man. Ideally we would start the show as a duo and then bring in a band to finish out the set. Hopefully that won’t be too far down the road. After a few years of touring and opening up for well-known bands, do you guys still get nervous? Even if we’re confident that we’ve put the time in, we still have nerves before a set. From touring with these seasoned bands we’ve gotten a lot of advice from them, and one thing they’ve said is, “If you’re nervous that’s good, because that means you care.” Any exciting new or upcoming projects you want fans to be on the lookout for? We started our tour in Vero Beach, and are doing three shows around Florida with The Pacifiers. After that, we head up to New York for a few more shows. We will be filming our live show at the Iridium in New York City September 20th. In November, we will be performing songs from our album after its release earlier that month at a festival which will be a lot of fun. We have also been working on headlining a show in St. Pete in December. All of those dates and locations will be out later this week, which is really exciting.

erformed by a 20-piece orchestra, Jihye Lee explores the conflicting emotions that a tragedy like the April, 2014 Sewol ferry crash that killed more than 300 passengers in South Korea can engender. April vividly navigates fluidly from visceral force to impressionistic beauty. Lee composes from a wide palette, at one moment lush watercolors, the next bold splashes of action painting. “April Wind” opens the album, the calm before the storm that sets the scene for the events of the day to unfold. Lee hopes that her music offers a path to healing. jihyemusic.com

MAX RICHTER Three Worlds: Music From Woolf Works

T

his album from artist/composer Max Richter is music crafted from Wayne McGregor’s ballet production Woolf Works, a ballet triptych inspired by the life and works of English novelist Virginia Woolf. It features powerful, compelling, emotional music, encompassing electronic textures and soundscapes, as well as orchestral episodes. ‘Woolf’ showcases different sides of Max’s vast palette of sounds, including upbeat, Arpeggiator pieces. It shows Max’s passion for both lavish string and piano melodies, but also his electronic side. The first track on the album features spoken words by Virginia Woolf herself, from a BBC recording from 1937.

rad Paisley’s live concert DVD and CD was shot in front of over 20,000 people at West Virginia Univ. He played an electrifying 2 hour show in the rain of all his hits including ‘’Alcohol’’, ‘’Crushin’ It’’, along with a very special version of the John Denver song ‘’Country Roads’’ which has become an anthem for WVU. The DVD was directed by award-winning director Daniel E Catullo III (Rush, Rage Against The Machine, Dave Matthews Band.)

MARIAH PARKER Indo Latin Jazz Live in Concert

M

ariah’s album captures the magic of her live performances. According to Latin Beat Magazine, Mariah’s Indo Latin Jazz Ensemble “blends the rhythmic syncopations of Latin jazz music with the entrancing, asymmetrical meters of East Indian rhythms resulting in first-class world music. Intriguing melodies that draw musical inspirations from the tempos of Brazil, Cuba, India, and Spain make for an uplifting serene yet passionate musical journey into an ideal world.” The musicians are all virtuoso performers and some are bandleaders and composers of international acclaim.

KATIE THIROUX Off Beat

ith her new recording, Katie Thiroux, a world-class bassist, has also proven to be a praiseworthy vocalist. Her contributing musicians include pianist Justin Kauflin, drummer Matt Witek, saxophonist Roger Neumann, and sax and clarinetist Ken Peplowski, who form a formidable jazz team. Her cut of “When the Wind Was Green” (a seldom visited Frank Sinatra track) finds her vocals supported only by her phenomenal bass and Peplowski’s clarinet. On the album it is evident that Katie drives the music, no matter the tempo, displaying her superior technical skills. www.caprirecords.com

CARNIVAL CRUISE LINE e n sce Celebrates Inaugural Havana Voyage

Aboard the Paradise

C

arnival Paradise made it’s inaugural voyage to Havana on June 29th with a sendoff held in the Queen Mary room aboard the ship. Carnival’s Executive VP of Guest Shipboard Operations Gus Antorcha; Paul Anderson, president & CEO, Port Tampa Bay; and Ybor City Museum Society reps and guests enjoyed some of the sights, sounds and tastes of Cuba before departure. A feature of the event was a 10 foot-long Cuban Sandwich — “The World’s Largest Cuban Sandwich At Sea”. Because of a rivalry as to who makes the “original” Cuban between Tampa and Miami, half of the sandwich was made the Miami way and the other half the Tampa way. The whole thing was made with white bread, five pounds of sliced ham, 50 pounds of marinated and roasted pork, six pounds of Swiss cheese, one gallon of dill pickles and mustard and mayonnaise, but the Tampa half had one extra ingredient— Genoa salami. (We prefer the Tampa style!) A buffet set-up also presented a delicious selection of Cuban-inspired food. Guests enjoyed the live Cuban music while indulging in food and specialty cocktails. Also on hand were the folks from Tabanero Cigars who demonstrated the age-old technique of hand-rolling cigars. Paul Anderson noted that the economic impact of Carnival’s operation in Tampa is substantial. A single port stop from an average size cruise ship generates more than $350,000 in direct economic input to the community. Carnival also made a $25,000 donation to Tampa’s Ybor City Museum Society, a non-profit which preserves the unique heritage of Ybor City. The send-off celebration certainly whetted our appetite for a cruise to Havana to experience some of the exciting port excursions they offer, as well as the ship itself, which offers plenty of amusement and relaxation — and, of course, lots and lots of great food! Carnival Paradise makes four- and five-day cruises to Havana through October. Five-day voyages add a stop in either Cozumel, Mexico; or Key West, FL. THE BALVENIE DISTILLERY & THE DMG

Fine Whiskey Distiller Partners with Fine Hand Crafts by Melissa Wolcott Martino

Y

ou might wonder what a Whiskey Distiller and a Glass Workshop have in common, as did I when I was invited to a collaborative event with The Balvenie Distillery and the Duncan McClellan Gallery. The Balvenie is a range of Single Malt whiskies hand crafted in Scotland’s Speyside region by William Grant & Sons. Known for its rich, smooth and honeyed character, the quality of The Balvenie range is attributable to the unique craftsmanship of its creator, David Stewart, an international Malt Master. The Balvenie folks like to collaborate with different types of craftsmen every year, and this year they chose the DMG for their extraordinary glass blowing artistry. The Balvenie is unique in that it retains complete control over the five rare crafts that go into the production of its whisky: the distillery grows its own barley, malts in its own traditional malting floor, employs coopers to tend every cask, a coppersmith to maintain the stills and a malt master to ensure that the resulting spirit retains its high quality. With over 100 international whisky awards in the last 10 years, The Balvenie has been recognized by the world’s most acclaimed experts for its commitment to the rare crafts involved in traditional malt whisky making. Gemma Paterson was the Balvenie Ambassador that brought our group together at the DMG. She is an expert on the brand and is a member of the William Grant & Sons Nosing Panel, with a General Certificate in Distillation. She was excited to introduce us to the Balvenie’s new Peat Week Whiskey, with its combination of the traditional rich and honeyed flavors of the Balvenie and the delicate sweet peat smoke. This blend was 14 years in the making, and is made from 100% peated barley with Highlands peat, and matured exclusively in American oak casks. Only 3400 9L cases are available globally. We sampled several of the smooth and distinctive Balvenie whiskeys in the tranquil garden of the DMG after our group had had our first glass blowing lesson, which was amazing.

I

had never been to The Duncan McClellan Gallery, although I had definitely heard about it. If you have not been, it is a must-see for any art enthusiast and/or collector. It is truly one of St. Petersburg’s hidden gems. Located in the burgeoning art scene of converted old warehouses in South St. Pete, the DMG was an old tomato packing plant. Duncan McClellan, himself an extraordinary artist, and his wife took several years to create this wonderful place for artists to work, display their crafts and congregate with other artists. Their lush backyard is an oasis of fruit bearing trees and natural vegetation. Shows in the gallery rotate, with some of the finest glass artists in the country being featured. On site is a 2,400 sq. foot “Hot Glass” Workshop for serious artists, and regular folk who would like to make a simple glass piece. DMG holds classes and workshops for those who wish to learn the craft, or just experience the art. Visitors are welcome to catch a glass blowing session. I have always found glass art to be quite daunting, and never tried if before. However, given the chance, I was pleased to participate with the rest of the group and create my first-ever piece. To say “I” created it is misleading. We had a brilliant mentor with Jake Stout who was very instrumental in us turning out decent pieces. In keeping with the Balvenie theme, we all created mixing glasses, and all were quite different as we were given free range on what we wanted. You can follow along pictorially with my own glass blowing experience from start to finish on the following pages. For more information on the Duncan McClellan Gallery and classes, please visit www.DMGlass.com

• Blowing glass while constantly turning is challenging! • Working the opening is tricky. • My Glass Mixer is done! Next step is to let it cool off for 24 hours, then on to the etching. • With etching, you have to cover all the glass you don’t want to be exposed to the sandblaster with a vinyl tape, and carefully cut out your design with an exacto. My etching teacher was another fine glass artist, Danyell Bauer. • After the sandblasting, remove the tape and voila!

his exhibit uses original menus as a starting point to explore the fine dining at the Tampa Bay Hotel and other grand Florida resorts from 1891 to 1932. These rarely exhibited menus draw visitors into the conversation of Victorian food, the source of food, its preparation, etiquette, fashion, and utensils that blend together to create the Victorian epicurean experience. They will briefly touch on menu art and children in the Hotel dining room. This exhibit displays original artifacts, including menus, photos, clothing, and utensils from the Tampa Bay Hotel and other Florida hotels. At the Tampa Bay Hotel, and other Florida resorts, meals were not simply about eating, but instead were a fine dining experience. Thought and care were put into food choices, decorations, place settings, music selection, and of course, menu design. Dressing for dinner often took over an hour, and meals could be a full ten courses. Meals for special events and holidays were even more elaborate. Included in the exhibit are menus from holidays.

IES IN NORTH AMERICA, IS IN DANGER OF REDUCING OPERATIONS DUE TO LACK OF FINANCIAL SUPPORT. The not-for-profit, bird rescue and rehabilitation facility only has a few days’ worth of food on hand at any given time and is no longer able to conduct bird rescues. Monthly operating costs, including the care and feeding of over 110 permanently injured birds on site, still exceed $20,000, despite cutting expenses to a minimum. Seaside Seabird Sanctuary, a fully independent, successor organization to the previous sanctuary, relies completely on public support to maintain a small, dedicated staff to provide daily care. Seaside has administered critical care to over 1,300 sick, injured, or orphaned birds representing 128 different species in 2017, to date. The compromised birds are brought to Seaside by concerned citizens or were rescued by staff and volunteers from locations within 400 square miles of the Central Gulf Coast of Florida. Rehabilitation work is costly and relies on well-trained, dedicated staff, many volunteers and quality facilities. The Seaside Seabird Sanctuary’s mission must continue in order to meet local and global community needs. This large, well-equipped seabird sanctuary is essential to the Tampa Bay area. THE WILD HORSES Of Sable Island by Robert Dutesco

teNeues Publishing www.teneues-books.us/

S

able Island, a small island off the coast of eastern Canada, is the site of some 500 wild horses, 500 shipwrecks, and 500 years of known history. Never settled, the island, also known as the “Graveyard of the Atlantic,” has seen temporary occupation by shipwrecked sailors, transported convicts, pirates, and wreckers. The wild horses, abandoned there long ago or cast ashore from wrecks, are now the only terrestrial mammals on Sable Island. Roebrto Dutesco’s twenty years’ documentation of Sable Island comes to you as a stunning volume of photographs, an unprecedented collection of extraordinary moments in a place uninhabited by humans, where the wild horses run free, unaware and unafraid of man.

Roberto Dutesco has been revealing the beauty of nature and the human spirit through his photography for more than three decades. Dutesco captured the beauty and isolation of the wild horses and their austere habitat through still photography and 16-mm film. In 2008, the Canadian government identified Sable Island as a protected national treasure as a result of Dutesco’s efforts.

SAN ANTONIO SHOES (SAS)

Opens New Store In Palm Harbor

O

Not Your Grandmother’s Shoes!

K, so I am a grandmother — and I love SAS Shoes. I reached the age years ago when I chose comfort over fashion. Let’s face it, years back SAS shoes were not the prettiest on the block. It was very difficult to find fashion-forward shoes that were also comfortable, and came in widths from S to WW. I have a slim foot, so it’s virtually impossible to find shoes that are comfortable and come in my size from the affordable chain shoe stores which seem to cater to the M-W foot, and are not all that comfortable or well-made. Even though the SAS shoes were not necessarily fabulous looking, they were always fabulously comfortable. Needless to say, I was amazed when I went to the grand opening of the new SAS store in Palm Harbor, and found a large variety of attractive styles and colors that are sure to appeal to the younger generation as well. If you’re not familiar with San Antonio Shoes, each pair is hand crafted in —you guessed it— San Antonio, TX, using the best materials. Although the styles may have changed, the emphasis on comfort has not. SAS has been around since 1976, and carries shoes for both men and women, so everyone is sure to find something to love. SAS also carries handbags and accessories. To celebrate the grand opening of the Palm Harbor store, SAS partnered with HEP (Homeless Empowerment Program) where they presented the charity with a check for $1,000, giving back to the community. SAS Palm Harbor is located in the Coral Landings Shopping Center, 33191 US Hwy 19 N. Please visit the SAS website for more information on locations and to see their new offerings. www.sasshoes.com

Flood Barrier Water Control

S

torm season can be scary for those living in low lying areas or by a body of water. In trying to shore up your home, it means filling up sand bags and hoping for the best. If you’ve ever had to do it, you know how irksome and messy it is. Quick Dam has a solution that is decidedly not messy, and very easy to do. Their products come in different shapes, all with the same end result — water absorbed to either stop your flooding or lessen it a lot. Quick Dams are made with a super absorbent polymer that swells on contact with water, which is then contained as a gel within the fabric. I lost my screened-in porch to a tornado which left my living room sliding doors vulnerable to heavy rains. I had to haul out towels and bunch them up along the doors whenever there was a threat of rain, otherwise the water seeped (poured) in. This got old really fast. Then I discovered Quick Dam. One of their products is a 10’ X 8” barrier strip that I can just lay down along my doors. It weighs practically nothing when dry. When it gets wet it absorbs the water and can swell to 3.5” in a matter of minutes and absorb 8 gallons of water. They can also be stacked on top of each other if more water is anticipated. My water problem isn’t that severe, so it has only risen about an inch in areas, but I haven’t had any water pass around the barrier yet. It dries out on it’s own and can be reused again and again. Fold it up and put it away. No sand, no labor! Quick Dam has a really good reputation, and is rated #1 in flood control. In the home, this style can be used to protect doorways, garages, leaking hot water tanks, erosion control and more. It can be used indoors or out. Note: Quick Dams do not work with salt water because of a chemical reaction. Please visit their website to see all the different shapes and styles of Quick Dams and their different applications.

Most scallops can be found in the shallow grass flats of the Gulf of Mexico that range anywhere from three to six feet deep. Only two to three inches in length and located inside a fan-shaped shell, the scallops can be easy to spot with their 30-40 bright blue eyes, but provide a good chase, since all those eyes help them detect predators. DEAL ME IN with Mark Pilarski www.markpilarski.com/

Gamblers Are Shunning Tightfisted Slots Dear Mark: In your column “I’ve Been Everywhere,” you wrote about all the casino destinations that you have visited over the years. Did you find in your travels that slot machines look and play the same from state to state? Ken K. Slot machines, Ken, are comparable from casino to casino, state to state. For instance, if it is an IGT Dazzling Dollars 3-Reel 1-Line 3-Credit machine in Wilkes-Barre, PA, expect the same in Reno, NV. So, yes, Ken, they all look and physically play the same: you press the credit button, hit spin, press credit, hit spin, keep repeating, and then reach for your wallet for more money. But, just because any old slot machine looks, walks and quacks like a duck, that doesn’t mean it is part of the Anatidae family of birds, especially when it comes to return percentages to the player. “Play” and “pay,” Ken, are twins of two dif-

paced high energy show of hilarious, spot-on impressions. TENORS OF ROCK AT HARRAHS www.tenorsoftock.com Formed with five of the best male rock voices in the United Kingdom, Tenors of Rock bring a new sound to familiar rock hits. From the original producer of “Rock of Ages” and director/choreographers The Goldenboyz (Katy Perry, P!nk), Tenors of Rock is a full production show featuring classic and contemporary rock hits like “Sweet Child O’ Mine,” “Living on a Prayer,” “Back in Black,” “Whole Lotta Love,” “Here I Go Again” and more. Since appearing on The X Factor UK, the highpowered vocals of Tenors of Rock have rocked millions worldwide.

ferent fathers. Payouts on slot machines are set by casino operators and are not consistent between gaming jurisdictions. The best cluck-for-the-buck when it comes to playing slots is in Nevada, where the house last year kept 6.4 percent. The worst would be in Iowa, where casinos in that state keep 9.4 percent of every dollar played. Furthermore, Ken, slot machines these days keeping a tighter grip on the money gamblers feed into them, and this translates into your hard-earned money not lasting as long as it used to. For example, based on the blended slot hold from a decade ago, if your bankroll were $100, you could gamble for 3.2 hours at $0.75 per spin. With higher holds across the board, now you will last approximately 2.6 hours, a 22% decrease. With these tighter slots, your time on device decreases, hence, you lose you money faster. But, Ken, few players play $0.75 per spin anymore. It’s more like $2 a pop, so your slot machine play with that same $100 is now reduced to just one hour. Casinos are also starting to feel the effects of higher hold percentages. Not only are casinos making it tougher for players to win at www.AccentOnTampaBay.com

the slot machines; the rising hold percentage has not translated into incrementally increasing gaming revenue for casino operators postrecession. In fact, many believe higher hold percentage is the contributing factor to slot revenue decline. I agree, but I would vigorously contend that it is equally the lack of Gen Xer and Millennial players. Here are just a few examples of current hold percentages showing where slots got stingier from a decade ago. Louisiana 9.26%, was 8.65% Mississippi 7.49%, was 6.54% Missouri 9.33%, was 7.44% Nevada 6.4%, was 5.72% Iowa 9.4%, was 7.05% New Jersey 8.96%, was 8.19%. Conversely, Pennsylvania’s hold percentages decreased from 9.56% to 7.82% and their slot revenue increased by 11.8%. Wondering aloud here, but is management upstairs taking notes? This is not to say that all slots pick your pocket. Some casinos do offer “liberal” slot machines. By liberal I mean casinos that advertise a higher payback percentage on “selected machines.” It’s up to you to find a casino advertising those liberal paybacks; then you’ll need to ask someone in slot personnel which machines those are. 105

Toys as Art & Jewelry T

o date, nearly 100 toys have been inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame at the Strong Museum in Rochester, New York. The National Toy Hall of Fame was established in 1998 and toy inductees include: soap bubbles, Rubik’s cube, rubber duck, stick (yes, cuz every kid plays with sticks), the cardboard box, chess, Hot Wheels toy cars, little green army men, doll house, Star Wars action figures, dominoes among others. Anyone can nominate a toy into the National Toy Hall of Fame. Final selections are made on the advice of a panel of judges, made up of historians, educators, and others in the field of play. This prompted me to consider how vintage toys are repurposed into new art forms. I found some pretty interesting collaborative efforts, mainly in the areas of fashion, art and jewelry design. Crayola crayon and colored pencil necklaces are the result of a designer using a pre-fab necklace, rope or chain link to string through a group of pre-drilled crayons or pencils to make a colorful necklace. Colored pencils also can be chopped up and strung in the manner of small scale beads to make bracelets, necklaces, etc. Another unusual toy- inspired work of art are the Lego toys that have been made into high fashion, ultra-expensive jewelry pieces. For instance, the Chanel clutch purse based on Lego designs ranges in price from $9,900 to $11,000 each. These purses are true works of art, hence the price tag.

The purses come in bright colors just like original Lego building blocks and feature geometric shapes. Since their introduction, the Chanel Lego purse has been seen in the hands of some of today’s trendy celeb-fashionistas, Rihanna, Jennifer Biel, and Kim Kardashian West. Purses are not the only Lego-inspired artwork out there. The Smithsonian Institution’s annual Craft2Wear event featured jewelry using Legos. Actual Lego blocks are strung together into necklaces, earrings, and bracelets by several designers the world over. Some are enhanced with sterling silver, set precious stones and gold leaf. If you are a gamer, then consider a PlayStation wallet. Inspired by Sony’s best-selling video game console introduced in 1994, the PlayStation wallet is modeled after the look of the original PlayStation and like some of their games, the wallet is hand held. Beanie baby purses featuring stuffed animals still focus on the famous Ty tag and animals with clever names like Beary Bag (bear) and Hutch Clutch (rabbit). Who knows, maybe we will see the introduction of Rubik’s cube bracelets, little green army men earrings, and soap bubble wand barrettes. Super Bowl winning head coach Jon Gruden will be inducted at half time at the Atlantic Falcons game on December 18. The Buccaneers open their preseason home slate against the Cleveland Browns on Saturday, August 26. Halftime entertainment will be provided by the teams junior cheer leaders program. The Buccaneers are celebrating their 20th season of the Junior cheerleaders, which is a program designed to promote self esteem, commitment and discipline for girls ages 6 to 14 years old. Tampa Bay will conclude it’s preseason schedule by hosting the Washington Redskins on Thursday, August 21. The team will celebrate NFL’s football initiative, which is focused on providing kids safe places to play, as well as programs that address importance of proper coaching, health, safety and wellness, academic and life skills development, and character education programs. On September 17 the Buccaneers play the Chicago Bears in the regular season home opener. The game will mark the regular season debut of a host of new Raymond James Stadium renovations. Two weeks later, on October 1, Tampa Bay play host to the New York Giants at 4:05 PM. The Buccaneers will host the first primetime ring of honor games just four days later, On October 5 when they will face-off against the New England Patriots. It’s amazing that the Buccaneers will face the Giants and four days later the Pat’s . I wonder who came up with that silly schedule? FORD F-159 HALL OF FAME CLUB. Ford Mo-

tor Co. and local Ford dealers are parenting with the Bucs to become the title sponsor of Ford F-150 Hall of Fame Club The newly expanded North Hall of Fame Club was so overwhelming successful last year that it sold out before the season started. 100 new seats were added to the new section for this season. Membership in the club includes VIP access to all RayJay events, including all Bucs home games, USF games, the Outback Bowl, Monster Jam, all concert and other special events for one price. Seems like a great deal.

Well I hope everyone is as pumped about this season. Will this be our Super Bowl year? Just a little side note. It seems there are players in the NFL that are wining that the aren’t getting as much money as they think they deserve because the players in the NBA make more. Really? They are kidding right? First they play very few games compared to the NBA and their season is much shorter. A kid gets millions to play a game and he might not even be any good but he’s complaining that he’s worth more? He needs to get a life. That‘s my opinion, sorry if you don’t like it. GO BUCS!

THE Best Knife Sharpener

t’s a poor workman who blames his tools.” I know you’ve heard that old adage, but sometimes it is the tool’s fault. In this case, any chef/cook will tell you the most important tool in the kitchen is a knife. A sharp knife. If it isn’t sharp, it can be the cause of much frustration and unpleasantness. The AnySharp Knife Sharpener Pro will be a chef’s 2nd most important tool in the kitchen. There are other knife sharpeners out there, but if you’ve tried a lot of them, as I have, you know they may be difficult to use, may work for a little while, or not work at all. The AnySharp is hands-free, super easy to use, and tucks away in a drawer when not in use. It will sharpen pretty much any kind and size knife (except ceramic), even wide tooth serrated blades which are usually difficult. A few light strokes and you’re done. If you don’t want to tuck it away, you can leave it out as they come in a variety of colors sure to match your kitchen decor. (Pink Cream, Pistachio, Almond Cream, Royal Red, British Racing Green, Royal Blue, Orange Zest, and Citrus Lime.) A handle snaps a rubber base tightly to your counter so you are hands free, then releases easily when you are done. Once you add this tool to your kitchen gadgets, your soufflé may frustrate you, but not your knife. AnySharp Pro also comes with a 10 year warranty, and is available at Amazon.com Visit the AnySharp website for more information on this and other products.
