Story and photos by Melissa W. Martino

I

n my humble opinion, this is one of the most exciting shows presented at the Salvador Dali Museum. Maybe its the fashion connection — I’m not sure. The exhibit is full of surprises with just how much the two artists influenced each other. Within the show, you discover well-known Dali pieces and Schiaparelli fashions that were obviously inspired by the other. The exhibit is nicely lit and well laid out with in-depth informative placards. It is presented in collaboration by The Dalí Museum and Schiaparelli Paris. In it, you will see Haute Couture gowns and accessories, jewelry, paintings, drawings, objects and photos. Elsa Schiaparelli was considered the most prominent figure in fashion between the two World Wars. Her designs were influenced by contemporary artists, such as Dali and Jean Cocteau. Schiaparelli actually invented shocking pink, the zipper in Haute Couture, trompe l’oeil garments, culottes and more for fashion. Elsa’s clientele were some of the most famous women of the day — The Duchess of Windsor, Mae West and Marlene Dietrich to name a few. There are pieces and references in the exhibit about them.

Elsa’s original address in Paris is still home to the Schiaparelli designs of today, as the House of Schiaparelli celebrates its 90th Anniversary this year. Which brings me to an unexpected and fabulous part of the show — wonderful new creations from the House of Schiaparelli design director Bertrand Guyon are presented at the end of the exhibit. You will see Elsa’s iconic signature design features in the new dresses and jewelry. A large screen projection shows Schiaparelli designs being created today, and models wearing the displayed fashions. Before exiting the exhibit, there is a small mirrored “changing room” behind a curtain that contains phrases attributed to Ms. Schiaparelli written on the mirrors for one to reflect on. The Dali/Schiaparelli exhibit will be on display through January 14, 2018. Enjoy! The Salvador Dalí Museum is located at One Dalí Boulevard, St. Petersburg, Florida 33701. ON YOUR FEET! - Oct 24 - 29. From their humble beginnings in Cuba, Emilio and Gloria Estefan came to America and broke through all barriers to become a crossover sensation at the very top of the pop music world. But just when they thought they had it all, they almost lost everything. From international superstardom to life-threatening tragedy, On Your Feet! takes you behind the music and inside the real story of this record-making and groundbreaking couple who, in the face of adversity, found a way to end up on their feet. FUN HOME was the event of the Broadway season, receiving raves from critics and audiences alike, winning

Based on Alison Bechdel’s best-selling graphic memoir, FUN HOME introduces us to Alison at three different ages as she explores and unravels the many mysteries of her childhood. Intended for mature audiences; contains adult themes and language. THE BOOK OF MORMON - Dec 5-10. The New York Times calls it “the best musical of this century.” Entertainment Weekly says, “Grade A: the funniest musical of all time.” It’s THE BOOK OF MORMON, the nine-time Tony Award-winning Best Musical. CELTIC THUNDER by Barbara McGovern

T

he Tampa Bay area is lucky to be able to welcome Celtic Thunder back to Clearwater. They will be coming to Ruth Eckerd Hall on November 17.

Many of you have become fans of Celtic Thunder after being introduced to them on PBS.The group has had the support of PBS since 2008. Celtic thunder did their first show in 2007 and they have become a world wide sensation.

54

www.AccentOnTampaBay.com

The original members of the group were Damien McGinty, Paul Byron,Keith Harkins, Ryan Kelly and the late George Donaldson. Damien, Ryan and Neil are still with the group, and various members have been added over the years. The group tours extensively, anywhere from 40 to 150 days a year. The longest tour was a tour of North America, which lasted just shy of four months. That was followed by a tour of Australia. Currently they have only plans for the United States,Canada, Australia and New Zealand. They hope to tour Europe and maybe Asia in the near future. Their largest Fanbase is North America followed by Australia. The demographics of their audiences are very interesting. I have been to many of their concerts, and you see moms, dads, kids and grandparents. I would say that their fans are multi generational. You don’t need to buy a kilt to enjoy them. Their music is very much traditional Irish music but they have incorporated many current mainstreamed genres to their repertoire. Celtic Thunder has recorded 13 albums over the past 10 years. They just introduced their latest album, “Inspirational”, in September. It’s slightly different from what they’ve done in the past but I’m sure their fans will love it. I can’t wait to hear it. They have done 11 PBS specials, and currently they are airing their Legacy show on PBS. Celtic Thunder supports various charities. One they have supported is the Leprosy Mission. Column and Ryan also went to NAPOLTRO to highlight the poverty there. They feel it is important to

give back and help people in need. The first time I saw Celtic Thunder in person was in Tampa about nine years ago. I had the opportunity to interview Damien—he was about 14 at the time. For whatever reason, I remember that he had white sneakers on and he just looked like a cute kid that happened to have a wonderful voice. It’s fun to see him grown up and become a very talented young man. He left Celtic Thunder in 2012 to audition for the Glee project. He won the competition and he got a role in Glee. Is was only scheduled for seven episodes but he did 27 over three years. It was impossible to do Celtic Thunder and Glee at the same time so he left and took a break from Celtic Thunder. About a Year after the Glee experience, the right opportunity came and now he’s back with Celtic Thunder. He’s looking forward to the new album and the big 10th anniversary special in the fall. There’s also a 10th anniversary cruise to look forward to. He and the group are flexible at this point but whatever comes along, he will always be a part of Celtic Thunder. I wish Damien and the rest of the group the best of luck and success. The show in November promises to be the most amazing show they’ve done. Don’t wait to get your ticket. You don’t want to miss the chance to see Celtic thunder. What a nice way to get ready for the holiday season. Please contact Ruth Eckerd Hall for tickets or information. www.rutheckerdhall.com

BLUES TRAVELER

Making a Tour Stop at Jannus Live

by Jenna Rimensnyder

W

hat started as a high school garage band from Princeton, NJ blossomed into a career filled with both platinum and gold albums, charttopping singles, a Grammy Award and some serious mileage on the tour bus for Blues Traveler. Currently, the group comprises of singer and harmonica player John Popper, guitarist Chan Kinchla, drummer Brendan Hill, bassist Tad Kinchla, and keyboardist Ben Wilson. Tad Kinchla and Ben Wilson joined the band following the death of original bassist Bobby Sheehan in 1999. Blues Traveler continues to tour as they celebrate their 30th anniversary as a band with plans to release a commemorative album early 2018. I caught up with drummer, Brendan Hill, while the guys were waiting for their bus to shuttle them to their next show. Throughout our interview, Hill reflected on the last 30 years of their career, maintaining a strong bond as a band, and their upcoming album.

72

Over the last 30 years what has been key to keeping the bond strong? I think living far apart is key [he said with a laugh]. Because when you spend so much time together, being able to kind of get away and be with your family gives you time to decompress. The time away allows us to have different interactions and experiences so when we come back each of us can contribute a different element to the mic so it doesn’t get stale. It is very important for us to keep the music fresh so our time apart is filled playing little solo projects on the side and collaborating with other artists. By doing so, we each bring new energy to the stage which is extremely important because we’re a very improvisational band. A lot depends on us being creative on stage, and in order to do that we must step away for a minute to keep that freshness.

What can fans expect from the Blues Traveler’s next album? This will be our 12th studio record. Over the last 30 years we’ve have grown musically as a band and as song writers. We wrote and recorded this album in Nashville. We had a writing session just as the band, which harkens back to the early days where we would hole ourselves up in a little house and sit around with guitars and a notepad and really flesh out song ideas and take the time, but not have any other writers or collaborators. The last two records we have done were collaborations. We went to different cities and met with different bands and wrote songs together — which was a fun exercise because every band has their way of writing songs, and so we interacted with bands like the Dirty Heads, 3OH!3 and Plain White Tees. What we ended up coming up with was a lot of different styles and genres which was fun to do, but did not necessarily feel like a Blues Traveler record. So when we wanted to do the commemorative album we thought, okay, let’s get back to the five of us and

make music together like we used to. We had an excellent producer, Matt Rollins, that allowed us the freedom to create and what came out is a really cool representation of Blues Travelers now. We have a different variety of styles but they are all reminiscent of Blues Travelers’ songs. What can we expect from your upcoming visit to Jannus Live? Well this is our 30th year playing together and we want you guys to come out and see us live. We’re going to bring back a bunch of old songs as well as the couple of new songs and celebrate the fans that have been with us the whole time and the ones seeing us for the first time. We’ve already started performing some of the latest singles, so by the time we get to you guys they should be polished by then! See you soon! The Blues Travelers will be making their way to Jannus Live on October 20th. For tickets and more information on the band, visit

P

erformed by a 20-piece orchestra, Jihye Lee explores the conflicting emotions that a tragedy like the April, 2014 Sewol ferry crash that killed more than 300 passengers in South Korea can engender. April vividly navigates fluidly from visceral force to impressionistic beauty. Lee composes from a wide palette, at one moment lush watercolors, the next bold splashes of action painting. “April Wind” opens the album, the calm before the storm that sets the scene for the events of the day to unfold. Lee hopes that her music offers a path to healing. jihyemusic.com

MAX RICHTER Three Worlds: Music From Woolf Works

T

his album from artist/composer Max Richter is music crafted from Wayne McGregor’s ballet production Woolf Works, a ballet triptych inspired by the life and works of English novelist Virginia Woolf. It features powerful, compelling, emotional music, encompassing electronic textures and soundscapes, as well as orchestral episodes. ‘Woolf’ showcases different sides of Max’s vast palette of sounds, including upbeat, Arpeggiator pieces. It shows Max’s passion for both lavish string and piano melodies, but also his electronic side. The first track on the album features spoken words by Virginia Woolf herself, from a BBC recording from 1937.

Intriguing melodies that draw musical inspirations from the tempos of Brazil, Cuba, India, and Spain make for an uplifting serene yet passionate musical journey into an ideal world.” The musicians are all virtuoso performers and some are bandleaders and composers of international acclaim.

ith her new recording, Katie Thiroux, a world-class bassist, has also proven to be a praiseworthy vocalist. Her contributing musicians include pianist Justin Kauflin, drummer Matt Witek, saxophonist Roger Neumann, and sax and clarinetist Ken Peplowski, who form a formidable jazz team. Her cut of “When the Wind Was Green” (a seldom visited Frank Sinatra track) finds her vocals supported only by her phenomenal bass and Peplowski’s clarinet. as well as new designs by Bertrand Guyon for Maison Schiaparelli. This will be the first exhibition dedicated to the creative relationship and works of Elsa Schiaparelli and Salvador Dali – friends and collaborators that set Paris and the world ablaze with their groundbreaking visions. Elsa Schiaparelli was regarded as the most prominent figure in fashion between the two World Wars. Her designs deliberately subverted traditional notions of women’s roles and beauty, embracing and exaggerating the transgressive nature of fashion. Schiaparelli explored bold Surrealistic themes in her designs, heavily influenced by artists, especially Dali, with whom she often collaborated. The Dali will be celebrating the exhibition with a grand fashion show and gala, bringing Paris chic to downtown St. Petersburg. The event will allow guests a glimpse into the secret world of haute couture. Held on Saturday October 14, the black tie affair will begin with a fashion show featuring contemporary Schiaparelli designs followed by an elegant dinner reception. A more casual yet equally celebratory Sunday brunch will be held the following day. A variety of other events and programs will also accompany the show.

MENUS: THE EPICUREAN EXPERIENCE Thru Dec 23

T

his exhibit uses original menus as a starting point to explore the fine dining at the Tampa Bay Hotel and other grand Florida resorts from 1891 to 1932. These rarely exhibited menus draw visitors into the conversation of Victorian food, the source of food, its preparation, etiquette, fashion, and utensils that blend together to create the Victorian epicurean experience. They will briefly touch on menu art and children in the Hotel dining room. This exhibit displays original artifacts, including menus, photos, clothing, and utensils from the Tampa Bay Hotel and other Florida hotels. At the Tampa Bay Hotel, and other Florida resorts, meals were not simply about eating, but instead were a fine dining experience. Thought and care were put into food choices, decorations, place settings, music selection, and of course, menu design. Dressing for dinner often took over an hour, and meals could be a full ten courses. Meals for special events and holidays were even more elaborate. Included in the exhibit are menus from holidays.

on hand at any given time and is no longer able to conduct bird rescues. Monthly operating costs, including the care and feeding of over 110 permanently injured birds on site, still exceed $20,000, despite cutting expenses to a minimum. Seaside Seabird Sanctuary, a fully independent, successor organization to the previous sanctuary, relies completely on public support to maintain a small, dedicated staff to provide daily care. Seaside has administered critical care to over 1,300 sick, injured, or orphaned birds representing 128 different species in 2017, to date. The compromised birds are brought to Seaside by concerned citizens or were rescued by staff and volunteers from locations within 400 square miles of the Central Gulf Coast of Florida. Rehabilitation work is costly and relies on well-trained, dedicated staff, many volunteers and quality facilities. The Seaside Seabird Sanctuary’s mission must continue in order to meet local and global community needs. This large, well-equipped seabird sanctuary is essential to the Tampa Bay area.

THE WILD HORSES Of Sable Island by Robert Dutesco

teNeues Publishing www.teneues-books.us/

S

able Island, a small island off the coast of eastern Canada, is the site of some 500 wild horses, 500 shipwrecks, and 500 years of known history. Never settled, the island, also known as the “Graveyard of the Atlantic,” has seen temporary occupation by shipwrecked sailors, transported convicts, pirates, and wreckers. The wild horses, abandoned there long ago or cast ashore from wrecks, are now the only terrestrial mammals on Sable Island. Roebrto Dutesco’s twenty years’ documentation of Sable Island comes to you as a stunning volume of photographs, an unprecedented collection of extraordinary moments in a place uninhabited by humans, where the wild horses run free, unaware and unafraid of man.

Roberto Dutesco has been revealing the beauty of nature and the human spirit through his photography for more than three decades. Dutesco captured the beauty and isolation of the wild horses and their austere habitat through still photography and 16-mm film. In 2008, the Canadian government identified Sable Island as a protected national treasure as a result of Dutesco’s efforts.

WHOSE MACHINE IS IT ANYWAY? Recently at a casino, I sat down at a penny machine, put my $5 in and a gentleman four seats down said to me, “that is my wife’s machine.” I said you can’t hold machines when she’s not here. He kept going on. A minute later, his wife came back and said that it was her machine. I repeated, “You can’t hold machines.” I said, “Call a manager or security over then.” A slot floor employee came over and said that the lady had been playing the machine. I told her, “You can’t hold machines” and to get a manager. Instead of going on and on, I pulled my $5 out and said you can have the machine instead of carrying on a scene. Was I correct in my response (for future reference)? Cheryl R. Many slot players protect their machines as a mother bear would her cubs. They tend to be territorial, as well as with very superstitious. Together, these two characteristics coalesce for some very combustible conditions when another player encroaches on “their” slot machine. Fortunately, most casinos have some form of policy that regulates

saving (capping) a machine. Yes, I can see a player who wants to take a short bathroom break and doesn’t want anybody else to touch the machine while they’re gone. It happens all the time. The operative word here is “short.” A lot of confrontational conduct occurs between players due to misinformation about how a slot machine operates. The ill-informed believe his or her machine is ‘due,’ and you, Cheryl, are in the crossfire because certain players, besides being superstitious, are unwilling to share ‘their’ machine with anybody else. The fact is; all modern slot machines come equipped with a random number generator, with symbol combinations constantly changing every millisecond from the time you insert the coin until you hit the spin button. The machine is not, “due,” “hot,” or anything else along those lines. Some telltale “No Trespassing” indicators are someone leaving their Player’s Club card inserted (not recommended), abandoning credits on the machine to hit the head (highly not recommended), place a coin bucket over the handle – if there is such a thing as handles anymore, leave an ashtray on the seat, or lean a Naugahyde stool against the machine. Although these unwritten rules are intended to indicate that someone is operating that particular machine, they don’t necessarily pass muster at some joints, nor stop a ruckus from ensuing. www.AccentOnTampaBay.com

Most casinos do have some form of capping policy. Some will place a floor attendant next to the machine until the player returns. Others, allow you to ask a slot supervisor to reserve your machine. Here they will ‘cap’ a game for 20-30 minutes by actually shutting the machine down. For their high-end Player’s Club Platinum members, they will shut the game down even longer. Casinos tend to be more accommodating for high-level slot players. By restricting access to selected slots for a lengthy period, the casino is counting on a big-spender gambling more money than all the other potential slot players would within the same timeline. If this is the case, Cheryl, you are caught up in another form of slot mathematics. Your potential bankroll doesn’t match theirs. Self-saving a machine for a fiveminute break to answer the call of nature is a reasonable action that courteous slot players should honor. It is those longer periods, like someone spending two hours at the seafood buffet, that you have a legitimate beef against; and you might want to summon a slot supervisor if you really, really want that machine. Besides, in your Detroit casino market, there are 225,000 square feet of casino floor space with countless slot machines on standby equipped to let you insert multiple $5 bills. In the future, if slot management decides to side with Mama Bear, at least you know what their policy is.

Fall Flea Market Tips A

utumn marks the time for the true collectors to shop for their collections. You can get great items and good deals at this season’s flea markets. At every flea market (originally named for the insects that were attracted to old objects that were pulled from musty attics and damp basements in 19th Century France) there are some bargains and some bologna. When shopping at a big outdoor flea market event, for a couple of hours or an entire weekend, remember to be prepared. Even if you aren’t shopping for Boy Scout memorabilia, this is a good motto. Be prepared with comfortable shoes, a good sun hat or umbrella, canvas shopping bags, bottled water to ward off dehydration, some snack food and cash in small bills. Get the lay of the land first before you buy. I coined the phrase “walk with your wallet” when it comes to flea market shopping. Before you buy anything, take a lap around the entire outdoor flea market. I do not just start shopping right out of the shoot. I always look before I leap. I know it sounds like a big job, but your personal trainer will commend you for the extra exercise, and your financial advisor will be thrilled at all the money you save. This walk with your wallet method will help you see what’s available for sale and stick to your budget, too. Look at each table or booth carefully. Talk to the sellers to see what you might like to negotiate for and how willing they are to deal. Look at how the booth is organized, consider the condition of the sellers’ offerings and see just how much inventory they expect to sell off at the seasonal flea market. Collect information and get the lay of the land as you look at the antiques offered for sale. 120

Don’t get too invested in any of the objects just yet. Don’t buy too quickly, and hone in on quality stuff and good bargains. If you aren’t sure about the authenticity of a piece, take a pass and reconsider it later. You can use your smartphone to send a photo to me, so I can tell you what a particular object is and what you should pay for that flea market find. It’s easy at www.DrLoriV.com on your smartphone. During your shopping, if you think something should be priced lower than its asking price considering its condition or other factors, just don’t buy it. Wait to see if there is something more attractive to your collector’s eye and to your wallet. Converse with the seller; he or she may be willing to offer a reduced price or more information. Then, once you know your path, ask for a discount. Odds are you will get what you ask for if you are paying with cash and if you are reasonable and polite. Don’t worry about missing out on an item when you are walking the market. Many people don’t think a specific antique will still be available if you don’t act fast, but I find that as a shopper you are better served if you know what is available before you buy. This gives you greater negotiating power too. Getting information about the inventory at a flea market will help you spot the good stuff at a good price. Slow and steady wins the autumn flea market race. Happy hunting! Dr. Lori Verderame is an antiques appraiser, internationally syndicated columnist and author, and award-winning TV personality who stars on History channel’s The Curse of Oak Island and Discovery’s Auction Kings. With a Ph.D. from Penn State University and experience appraising 20,000 antiques every year, Dr. Lori presents antique appraisal events to worldwide audiences. Visit www. Bucs Bits

B

efore I comment on the wonderful things that have happened since my last article, I feel it’s very important to mention several things that happened about hurricane Irma. First and foremost we have to thank God for sparing Florida from the worst of what could’ve happened, it was very hard but it wasn’t what it could have been. Next we have to thank all the first responders, our neighbors, and the officials

that we’re on top of everything. To all the media who kept us informed, thank you. Special thanks go to the Buccaneers and the Glazer family. As usual they were right there to pitch in and help our community. I don’t know if everyone is aware of it but the Glazer family and the Buccaneers donated $1 million to the Red Cross and they also joined with the NFL’s relief effort and donated additional monies. Plus they gave 3000 tickets to the first responders so they could enjoy the game. These are the kinds of things that the Glazers and the organization do to help the community. They don’t have to do it and they don’t expect anything for it but they do it because it’s the right thing. Thank you to the Glazers and the Buccaneers. We are very lucky to have you in the community. With high hopes, everyone was looking forward the New England Patriots coming to our house. The Bucs were hosting the Super Bowl Champs, a big attraction, BUT, Tom Terrific, would be here. 122

by Barbara McGovern

This would be the first time the Pat’s would play a regular game in R.J. and it was a National game played under the lights. It also would also be a very emotional night because Malcom Glazer, the late and beloved owner of the Bucs was to be invested into the Bucs Ring of Honor. I don’t think I have ever been the stands as packed, I’m sure it as one of the biggest fan turn-out ever. Anticipation was sky high. The Bucs were coming off a great win against the Giants, the fans were stocked. Then came the game: we held our own and when Doug Martin scored a touchdown, the crowd went wild. Tom T. was sacked several times , we thought things were looking good but things started to go south. The rest of the game turned sour. Tom T. still has the magic, when things seem darkest the Pat’s pull it out of the bag. I’m sorry to say this was another long, sad story. The Bucs came back, they never gave up and they were seconds from pulling off an amazing win, but as we all know by now, that didn’t happen. We can say that several key players were out with injuries and that’s true but that’s not the whole story. This may be unfair but, we lost this game because we can’t get a kicker that can find the uprights . This has been a problem in the past and it has cost too many game. Enough. Find a kicker that can help the Bucs put games away. Join the Buccaneers for the 2nd Annual Bucs Squad for Youth Pumpkin Patch on October 21,

The team will celebrate with a Thank You to All Our Fans appreciation day.

Over the past several months renovation of the stadium has been ongoing. Part three of the renovation to the stadium have been completed and were previewed by the media several weeks ago. This renovation was a game changer for the fans. The $350 million upgrade completely changed major sections of the stadium. Many new features have been added, one of the best additions has been the new team store. The fans are going to love it. They will be able to get everything Bucs in on place, from key chains to bedroom sets, its all here.

The season got a late start, thanks to Irma! The first home game also was the start of the Bucs season. The first game was a dozzie. It was a great way to start, let’s hope it continues. Let’s support our team, the mighty Bucs, and cheer them on to the Super Bowl. From my mouth to Gods ear. GO BUCS!

AnySharp

THE Best Knife Sharpener

t’s a poor workman who blames his tools.” I know you’ve heard that old adage, but sometimes it is the tool’s fault. In this case, any chef/cook will tell you the most important tool in the kitchen is a knife. A sharp knife. If it isn’t sharp, it can be the cause of much frustration and unpleasantness. The AnySharp Knife Sharpener Pro will be a chef’s 2nd most important tool in the kitchen. There are other knife sharpeners out there, but if you’ve tried a lot of them, as I have, you know they may be difficult to use, may work for a little while, or not work at all. The AnySharp is hands-free, super easy to use, and tucks away in a drawer when not in use. It will sharpen pretty much any kind and size knife (except ceramic), even wide tooth serrated blades which are usually difficult. A few light strokes and you’re done. If you don’t want to tuck it away, you can leave it out as they come in a variety of colors sure to match your kitchen decor. (Pink Cream, Pistachio, Almond Cream, Royal Red, British Racing Green, Royal Blue, Orange Zest, and Citrus Lime.) A handle snaps a rubber base tightly to your counter so you are hands free, then releases easily when you are done. Once you add this tool to your kitchen gadgets, your soufflé may frustrate you, but not your knife. AnySharp Pro also comes with a 10 year warranty, and is available at Amazon.com Visit the AnySharp website for more information on this and other products.
