Story and photos by Melissa W. Martino

I

n my humble opinion, this is one of the most exciting shows presented at the Salvador Dali Museum. Maybe its the fashion connection — I’m not sure. The exhibit is full of surprises with just how much the two artists influenced each other. Within the show, you discover well-known Dali pieces and Schiaparelli fashions that were obviously inspired by the other. The exhibit is nicely lit and well laid out with in-depth informative placards. It is presented in collaboration by The Dalí Museum and Schiaparelli Paris. In it, you will see Haute Couture gowns and accessories, jewelry, paintings, drawings, objects and photos. Elsa Schiaparelli was considered the most prominent figure in fashion between the two World Wars. Her designs were influenced by contemporary artists, such as Dali and Jean Cocteau. Schiaparelli actually invented shocking pink, the zipper in Haute Couture, trompe l’oeil garments, culottes and more for fashion. Elsa’s clientele were some of the most famous women of the day — The Duchess of Windsor, Mae West and Marlene Dietrich to name a few. There are pieces and references in the exhibit about them.

Elsa’s original address in Paris is still home to the Schiaparelli designs of today, as the House of Schiaparelli celebrates its 90th Anniversary this year. Which brings me to an unexpected and fabulous part of the show — wonderful new creations from the House of Schiaparelli design director Bertrand Guyon are presented at the end of the exhibit. You will see Elsa’s iconic signature design features in the new dresses and jewelry. A large screen projection shows Schiaparelli designs being created today, and models wearing the displayed fashions. Before exiting the exhibit, there is a small mirrored “changing room” behind a curtain that contains phrases attributed to Ms. Schiaparelli written on the mirrors for one to reflect on. The Dali/Schiaparelli exhibit will be on display through January 14, 2018. Enjoy! The Salvador Dalí Museum is located at One Dalí Boulevard, St. Petersburg, Florida 33701. BROADWAY SHOWS

FUN HOME - Nov 28 - Dec 3. FUN HOME was the event of the Broadway season, receiving raves from critics and audiences alike, winning five 2015 Tony Awards including BEST MUSICAL and making history along the way. Based on Alison Bechdel’s bestselling graphic memoir, FUN HOME introduces us to Alison at three different ages as she explores and unravels the many mysteries of her childhood. CELTIC THUNDER by Barbara McGovern

T

he Tampa Bay area is lucky to be able to welcome Celtic Thunder back to Clearwater. They will be coming to Ruth Eckerd Hall on November 17.

Many of you have become fans of Celtic Thunder after being introduced to them on PBS.The group has had the support of PBS since 2008. Celtic thunder did their first show in 2007 and they have become a world wide sensation.

52

www.AccentOnTampaBay.com

The original members of the group were Damien McGinty, Paul Byron,Keith Harkins, Ryan Kelly and the late George Donaldson. Damien, Ryan and Neil are still with the group, and various members have been added over the years. The group tours extensively, anywhere from 40 to 150 days a year. The longest tour was a tour of North America, which lasted just shy of four months. That was followed by a tour of Australia. Currently they have only plans for the United States,Canada, Australia and New Zealand. They hope to tour Europe and maybe Asia in the near future. Their largest Fanbase is North America followed by Australia. The demographics of their audiences are very interesting. I have been to many of their concerts, and you see moms, dads, kids and grandparents. I would say that their fans are multi generational. You don’t need to buy a kilt to enjoy them. Their music is very much traditional Irish music but they have incorporated many current mainstreamed genres to their repertoire. Celtic Thunder has recorded 13 albums over the past 10 years. They just introduced their latest album, “Inspirational”, in September. It’s slightly different from what they’ve done in the past but I’m sure their fans will love it. I can’t wait to hear it. They have done 11 PBS specials, and currently they are airing their Legacy show on PBS. Celtic Thunder supports various charities. One they have supported is the Leprosy Mission. Column and Ryan also went to NAPOLTRO to highlight the poverty there. They feel it is important to

give back and help people in need. The first time I saw Celtic Thunder in person was in Tampa about nine years ago. I had the opportunity to interview Damien—he was about 14 at the time. For whatever reason, I remember that he had white sneakers on and he just looked like a cute kid that happened to have a wonderful voice. It’s fun to see him grown up and become a very talented young man. He left Celtic Thunder in 2012 to audition for the Glee project. He won the competition and he got a role in Glee. Is was only scheduled for seven episodes but he did 27 over three years. It was impossible to do Celtic Thunder and Glee at the same time so he left and took a break from Celtic Thunder. About a Year after the Glee experience, the right opportunity came and now he’s back with Celtic Thunder. He’s looking forward to the new album and the big 10th anniversary special in the fall. There’s also a 10th anniversary cruise to look forward to. He and the group are flexible at this point but whatever comes along, he will always be a part of Celtic Thunder. I wish Damien and the rest of the group the best of luck and success. The show in November promises to be the most amazing show they’ve done. Don’t wait to get your ticket. You don’t want to miss the chance to see Celtic thunder. What a nice way to get ready for the holiday season. Please contact Ruth Eckerd Hall for tickets or information. www.rutheckerdhall.com

In 2012, Lady Gaga launched the Born This Way Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering youth, embracing differences and inspiring kindness and bravery. BLUES TRAVELER 30 Year Anniversary by Jenna Rimensnyder

W

hat started as a high school garage band from Princeton, NJ blossomed into a career filled with both platinum and gold albums, charttopping singles, a Grammy Award and some serious mileage on the tour bus for Blues Traveler. Currently, the group comprises of singer and harmonica player John Popper, guitarist Chan Kinchla, drummer Brendan Hill, bassist Tad Kinchla, and keyboardist Ben Wilson. Tad Kinchla and Ben Wilson joined the band following the death of original bassist Bobby Sheehan in 1999. Blues Traveler continues to tour as they celebrate their 30th anniversary as a band with plans to release a commemorative album early 2018. I caught up with drummer, Brendan Hill, while the guys were waiting for their bus to shuttle them to their next show. Throughout our interview, Hill reflected on the last 30 years of their career, maintaining a strong bond as a band, and their upcoming album.

68

Over the last 30 years what has been key to keeping the bond strong? I think living far apart is key [he said with a laugh]. Because when you spend so much time together, being able to kind of get away and be with your family gives you time to decompress. The time away allows us to have different interactions and experiences so when we come back each of us can contribute a different element to the mic so it doesn’t get stale. It is very important for us to keep the music fresh so our time apart is filled playing little solo projects on the side and collaborating with other artists. By doing so, we each bring new energy to the stage which is extremely important because we’re a very improvisational band. A lot depends on us being creative on stage, and in order to do that we must step away for a minute to keep that freshness.

www.AccentOnTampaBay.com

What can fans expect from the Blues Traveler’s next album? This will be our 12th studio record. Over the last 30 years we’ve have grown musically as a band and as song writers. We wrote and recorded this album in Nashville. We had a writing session just as the band, which harkens back to the early days where we would hole ourselves up in a little house and sit around with guitars and a notepad and really flesh out song ideas and take the time, but not have any other writers or collaborators. The last two records we have done were collaborations. We went to different cities and met with different bands and wrote songs together — which was a fun exercise because every band has their way of writing songs, and so we interacted with bands like the Dirty Heads, 3OH!3 and Plain White Tees. What we ended up coming up with was a lot of different styles and genres which was fun to do, but did

not necessarily feel like a Blues Traveler record. So when we wanted to do the commemorative album we thought, okay, let’s get back to the five of us and make music together like we used to. We had an excellent producer, Matt Rollins, that allowed us the freedom to create and what came out is a really cool representation of Blues Travelers now. We have a different variety of styles but they are all reminiscent of Blues Travelers’ songs. What can fans expect from your current tour? Well this is our 30th year playing together and we want our fans to come out and see us live. We’re going to bring back a bunch of old songs as well as the couple of new signs and celebrate the fans that have been with us the whole time and the ones seeing us for

the first time. For more information on the band, please visit

erformed by a 20-piece orchestra, Jihye Lee explores the conflicting emotions that a tragedy like the April, 2014 Sewol ferry crash that killed more than 300 passengers in South Korea can engender. April vividly navigates fluidly from visceral force to impressionistic beauty. Lee composes from a wide palette, at one moment lush watercolors, the next bold splashes of action painting. “April Wind” opens the album, the calm before the storm that sets the scene for the events of the day to unfold. MAX RICHTER Three Worlds: Music From Woolf Works

T

his album from artist/composer Max Richter is music crafted from Wayne McGregor’s ballet production Woolf Works, a ballet triptych inspired by the life and works of English novelist Virginia Woolf. It features powerful, compelling, emotional music, encompassing electronic textures and soundscapes, as well as orchestral episodes. ‘Woolf’ showcases different sides of Max’s vast palette of sounds, including upbeat, Arpeggiator pieces. It shows Max’s passion for both lavish string and piano melodies, but also his electronic side. The first track on the album features spoken words by Virginia Woolf herself, from a BBC recording from 1937.

Arnold Palmer’s

BAY HILL CLUB & LODGE

Where Golf and Tranquility Meet Story and photos by Melissa Wolcott Martino and Al Martino

I

f you do not follow sports (which I admittedly do not), I can still conjure up at least one name associated with any sport. Indy Car Racing: Mario Andretti. Basketball: Michael Jordan. Baseball: Joe DiMaggio. Golf: Arnold Palmer. Even if you do not follow a sport, legends have a way of reaching beyond their fields into the mainstream. Arnold Palmer is such a legend.

74

www.AccentOnTampaBay.com

A

d

rnold Palmer is of course known for his incredible golf skills, but also popularizing the sport, and taking it out of the elite group and bringing to everyman. He was really the first golf “superstar,” but also remained humble and kind. His fans were called “Arnie’s Army” and would follow him faithfully. Palmer created a charitable foundation and named it Arnie’s Army. The foundation was formed mainly to help children and created the Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies Center, The Howard Philips Center for Children & Families, and the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children—all located in Orlando. During his career, Palmer won 62 PGA Tour titles among many other major titles including the Masters, U.S. Open, and The Open Championship, racking up a total of 95 professional wins. Somewhere along the line, he found time to learn to be a pilot and flew for over 50 years. When you get to be a legend, you get things named after you. Arnold has the Arnold Palmer Cup, which is an annual team competition between American and European college golfers. The Westmoreland County Airport in Latrobe, PA was renamed the Arnold Palmer Regional Airport. Then there’s the drink which you have probably sampled, called The Arnold Palmer, which consists of iced tea and lemonade. You may have driven on Arnold Palmer Blvd off Kirkman Rd. in Orlando. The list goes on and on.

Arnold Palmer’s personal photos adorn the walls throught the Lodge and guestrooms.

The front entrance to the lobby is warm and inviting.

hen Arnold played the course at the Bay Hill Golf Club in Orlando back in the 60s, he felt it was the ideal location for a full golf resort. He made it happen in the 70s and was really the impetus for the popularity of golf resorts popping up all over Florida. For the rest of his life, Palmer spent 6 months at Bay Hill Club & Lodge and 6 months at his LaTrobe Country Club in Pennsylvania. (Never really losing touch with his roots, he was born in LaTrobe.) He sadly passed away last year, and left a void in the hearts of the staff at his resorts, as he was beloved.

d

Full Disclosure: We not golfers, but love golf resorts. Why? Because they tend to be beautiful and tranquil. Our recent visit to Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Club and Lodge was a complete delight. When you pull into the property, you arrive at a complex that could be easily located in the NorthWest (sans the palm trees and cold weather). The 70-room lodge is all natural stone and wood, which is carried on throughout the interior. With the addition of comfortable fabrics and leather, it’s homey and unpretentious. Ambient lighting adds to the relaxed feel of the lodge. There are several restaurants on property, all serving tasty food and drinks.

The Bay Window Restaurant serves delicious casual fare, and overlooks the putting green.

ur lodge room overlooked the 9th hole and the practice green. Since the weather was so lovely at the time, we opened the door to the balcony and enjoyed morning coffee and the slight breeze. The rooms are tastefully furnished in warm earth tones with an eye to comfort, and all lodge rooms have internet access. A daily newspaper is delivered in the morning, and convenient morning coffee stations are located in the hallway lounge areas. Room service is also available. There is a channel on the TV that is devoted to Arnold Palmer’s life story which is quite fascinating. In the guest rooms, and throughout the lodge, you will find various photos of Arnold playing golf, or with some of his famous friends. A lot of interesting artwork also adorns the walls of the lodge—not surprisingly with a heavy emphasis on golf themes.

s a guest of the lodge, we had access to the same facilities as members during our stay, such as a spa, hair salon and fitness center, pool and tennis courts, and of course, golf—Bay Hill is considered one of the top 10 PGA courses in the country. A tour of the spa showed it to be quite inviting. We chose to try the Couples Massage, which was just divine. The Couples Massage is held in one of the lodge rooms instead of the spa area, which makes for an even more relaxed experience. Dali & Schiaparelli will feature haute couture gowns and accessories, jewelry, paintings, drawings, objects and photos, as well as new designs by Bertrand Guyon for Maison Schiaparelli. This will be the first exhibition dedicated to the creative relationship and works of Elsa Schiaparelli and Salvador Dali – friends and collaborators that set Paris and the world ablaze with their groundbreaking visions. Elsa Schiaparelli was regarded as the most prominent figure in fashion between the two World Wars. Her designs deliberately subverted traditional notions of women’s roles and beauty, embracing and exaggerating the transgressive nature of fashion. Schiaparelli explored bold Surrealistic themes in her designs, heavily influenced by artists, especially Dali, with whom she often collaborated. The Dali will be celebrating the exhibition with a grand fashion show and gala, bringing Paris chic to downtown St. Petersburg. The event will allow guests a glimpse into the secret world of haute couture. Held on Saturday October 14, the black tie affair will begin with a fashion show featuring contemporary Schiaparelli designs followed by an elegant dinner reception. A more casual yet equally celebratory Sunday brunch will be held the following day. A variety of other events and programs will also accompany the show. DR. CARTER G. his exhibit uses original menus as a starting point to explore the fine dining at the Tampa Bay Hotel and other grand Florida resorts from 1891 to 1932. These rarely exhibited menus draw visitors into the conversation of Victorian food, the source of food, its preparation, etiquette, fashion, and utensils that blend together to create the Victorian epicurean experience. They will briefly touch on menu art and children in the Hotel dining room. This exhibit displays original artifacts, including menus, photos, clothing, and utensils from the Tampa Bay Hotel and other Florida hotels. At the Tampa Bay Hotel, and other Florida resorts, meals were not simply about eating, but instead were a fine dining experience. Thought and care were put into food choices, decorations, place settings, music selection, and of course, menu design. Dressing for dinner often took over an hour, and meals could be a full ten courses. Meals for special events and holidays were even more elaborate. Included in the exhibit are menus from holidays.

OLDEST AND LARGEST WILD BIRD SANCTUARIES IN NORTH AMERICA, IS IN DANGER OF REDUCING OPERATIONS DUE TO LACK OF FINANCIAL SUPPORT. The not-for-profit, bird rescue and rehabilitation facility only has a few days’ worth of food on hand at any given time and is no longer able to conduct bird rescues. Monthly operating costs, including the care and feeding of over 110 permanently injured birds on site, still exceed $20,000, despite cutting expenses to a minimum. Seaside Seabird Sanctuary, a fully independent, successor organization to the previous sanctuary, relies completely on public support to maintain a small, dedicated staff to provide daily care. Seaside has administered critical care to over 1,300 sick, injured, or orphaned birds representing 128 different species in 2017, to date. The compromised birds are brought to Seaside by concerned citizens or were rescued by staff and volunteers from locations within 400 square miles of the Central Gulf Coast of Florida. Rehabilitation work is costly and relies on well-trained, dedicated staff, many volunteers and quality facilities. The Seaside Seabird Sanctuary’s mission must continue in order to meet local and global community needs. This large, well-equipped seabird sanctuary is essential to the Tampa Bay area. THE WILD HORSES Of Sable Island by Robert Dutesco

teNeues Publishing www.teneues-books.us/

S

able Island, a small island off the coast of eastern Canada, is the site of some 500 wild horses, 500 shipwrecks, and 500 years of known history. Never settled, the island, also known as the “Graveyard of the Atlantic,” has seen temporary occupation by shipwrecked sailors, transported convicts, pirates, and wreckers. The wild horses, abandoned there long ago or cast ashore from wrecks, are now the only terrestrial mammals on Sable Island. Roebrto Dutesco’s twenty years’ documentation of Sable Island comes to you as a stunning volume of photographs, an unprecedented collection of extraordinary moments in a place uninhabited by humans, where the wild horses run free, unaware and unafraid of man.

Roberto Dutesco has been revealing the beauty of nature and the human spirit through his photography for more than three decades. Dutesco captured the beauty and isolation of the wild horses and their austere habitat through still photography and 16-mm film. In 2008, the Canadian government identified Sable Island as a protected national treasure as a result of Dutesco’s efforts.

Susan and Jake spent only one dinner together and both felt an instant attraction. Jake walked away. He was, and is, committed to Kathleen. As Jake and his partner, Garrett Demarcus, close the circle on finding Jenny, they discover that Kathleen’s past ties to organized crime and Jenny’s life are strangely entwined. They fight a two-front battle to find Jenny and to protect Kathleen. By protecting Kathleen, will Jake become the type of man that she could never love? Does he have a choice? Robert Lane’s second stand-alone Jake Travis novel delivers a tour de force of suspense, intrigue, and humor, deftly wrapped in Lane’s trademark literary overtones. Robert Lane’s literary crime-noir layers action packed drama with compelling characters, timeless themes, and a tropical setting. Lane resides on the west coast of Florida. www.AccentOnTampaBay.com

DEAL ME IN with Mark Pilarski www.markpilarski.com/

LET IT RIDE Dear Mark: What is your take on Let It Ride? I love to play it, but how bad are the odds? The 3-card bet seems to be the best chance to win money. Steve C.

Let It Ride is a variation of fivecard stud poker where the player wagers on a poker hand consisting

of three cards in the player’s hand and two community cards in the dealer’s hand. Play begins with each player making three equal bets in spaces labeled (1), (2) and ($). The dealer then gives each player three cards, and deals two community cards face down. After seeing his or her three cards, each player has the option of pulling back the first bet, or, as the game is eponymously named, saying “Let it Ride.” The dealer then exposes one of the two community cards. Each player now has the option to remove the second bet or to “let it ride,” regardless of the first decision. Finally, the second community card is revealed. Losing bets not meeting the payout criteria are collected; then the winning wagers are paid according to a posted payout schedule. Typically a Royal Flush pays 1,000 to 1, a Straight flush: 200 to 1, Four of a kind: 50 to 1, Full House: 11 to 1, Flush: 8 to 1, Straight: 5 to 1, Three of a kind: 3 to 1, Two pair: 2 to 1, and a pair of 10s or better: 1 to 1. www.AccentOnTampaBay.com

Like you, I find the game fun to play, slow enough for the newbie gambler, and forgiving as it does allow you to pull back two of the three bets. My problem, Steve, is that even when played with perfect strategy, the casino advantage on Let-It-Ride is 3.51%, well above my axiom; “Never make a wager that has higher than a 2% house edge.” That is almost six times higher than blackjack when using perfect basic strategy. Incidentally, amongst dealers, Let It Ride is nicknamed ‘Let It Die,’ since the tipping rate is terrible. Regarding the “3-Card Bonus Bet,” it is a side bet which pays, based on the poker value of the player’s three cards, similar to the Pair-plus Wager in Three Card Poker. With Let It Ride, the wager has a separate win for a “Mini Royal,” defined as ace/king/queen of one suit. With any Let-It-Ride side bets, where you are offered an additional payoff with certain paying hands, all of these wagers carry a whopping double-digit casino edge, and I would recommend that you avoid all of them. 121

New Trends in Wine Glass Collecting

F

or wine lovers, to fully understand and enjoy all things grape is the most important facet of collecting wine and wine accessories. What is growing more and more interesting to antique and vintage wine and barware collectors is the reintroduction of collecting the right glass for your favorite wine. I have found that many wine lovers are quickly becoming wine glass or goblet collectors. Where crystal glasses and wine glasses had fallen out of favor with millennials and other spirited drinkers who didn’t want to be presented with the chore of hand washing delicate crystal or storing glassware with every use, recently, finding the perfect wine glass from bygone days is fast becoming a new and fun collecting trend. Wine aficionados say that enjoying wine is as much about tasting it as it is about smelling it. So, your wine glass should be of a shape that allows both senses to work in unison. Here is some information about wine glass shape and its impact. A wine glass in the shape of a balloon will offer the drinker to experience more aspects of a wine than a glass of a different shape. A small, narrow wine glass will keep wine cooler in the glass and help the drinker concentrate on the wine’s specific traits. Since more people are drinking easy-

124

to-enjoy wines like Sauvignon Blanc and light reds like Valpolicella on a regular basis, I am seeing collectors looking for smaller wine glasses from the 1940s to the 1950s, in crystal, as well as larger blown wine glasses from the early 1900s and the 1970s. When it comes to bold red wines, just like flamboyant and fantastic Italian paintings, look for a wine glass with a large bowl. The large bowl allows the red wine to swirl around and make contact with the air breaking down any bitter, tannin taste. This tradition of enjoying a big hefty glass of red wine has resulted in new trends in the antiques world. Not only are wine lovers looking for appropriate glasses but they are also seeking out antique and old style furniture. Many wine lovers are buying free-standing wooden storage cabinetry for vintage wine glasses, barware, and collectible wine bottles. Wine lovers are looking for sturdy glass stemware that can host a nice big glass of Bordeaux, Burgundy, or Malbec. So bigger is better when it comes to a complex wine which means wine glasses of traditional shapes and styles are all the rage now. Antique collectors are looking to the shape of old glasses from the Renaissance and Baroque

periods as models for the enjoyment of bold red wines. Also, they are amassing collections of dainty, tapered stemmed wine glasses in cut crystal or glass that recall the glassware of the 18th Century or French Rococo period more suited to delicate white wines. Why did we drink wine in a stemmed glass in the first place? A stem allows the heat from our hands to be transferred only to the stem and not to the area where the glass hosts the wine. So always hold your wine glass by the stem. Stemless wine glasses are growing in popularity yet there are fewer antique and vintage options of stemless wine glasses for collectors to collect. It isn’t as easy to find an antique stemless wine glass but many people are drinking wines, dare I report, from non-traditional stemless wine glasses of various shapes most of which date from the 1960s and 1970s. When it comes to collecting trends, overall social practices rule and enjoying wine is no exception. When you are taking of the grape, remember the all-important wine glass shape. AnySharp

THE Best Knife Sharpener

t’s a poor workman who blames his tools.” I know you’ve heard that old adage, but sometimes it is the tool’s fault. In this case, any chef/cook will tell you the most important tool in the kitchen is a knife. A sharp knife. If it isn’t sharp, it can be the cause of much frustration and unpleasantness. The AnySharp Knife Sharpener Pro will be a chef’s 2nd most important tool in the kitchen. There are other knife sharpeners out there, but if you’ve tried a lot of them, as I have, you know they may be difficult to use, may work for a little while, or not work at all. The AnySharp is hands-free, super easy to use, and tucks away in a drawer when not in use. It will sharpen pretty much any kind and size knife (except ceramic), even wide tooth serrated blades which are usually difficult. A few light strokes and you’re done. If you don’t want to tuck it away, you can leave it out as they come in a variety of colors sure to match your kitchen decor. (Pink Cream, Pistachio, Almond Cream, Royal Red, British Racing Green, Royal Blue, Orange Zest, and Citrus Lime.) A handle snaps a rubber base tightly to your counter so you are hands free, then releases easily when you are done. Once you add this tool to your kitchen gadgets, your soufflé may frustrate you, but not your knife. AnySharp Pro also comes with a 10 year warranty, and is available at Amazon.com Visit the AnySharp website for more information on this and other products.
