T

he 2018 Wishmaker’s Ball, presented by PNC Bank, is an unforgettable evening of dinner, drinks, live entertainment, dancing, and auctions that include unique items and one-ofa-kind experiences. A private concert by Rock & Roll Hall of Famers Joan Jett and the Blackhearts kicks off the second part of the evening, which also features an After Party and live DJ. The event’s theme is ‘A Night Under the Stars’ and 100% of the net proceeds will go toward granting the life-changing wishes for local children that have critical illnesses. The Wishmaker’s Ball will be held at the beautiful Grand Hyatt Tampa Bay, 2900 Bayport Drive, Tampa, FL 33607. Chairing the black-tie event for the third time is Steven Gillis, a Tampa native (Jesuit High) and CEO of Tampa-based Transportation Control Systems. He has been a longtime leader on the Tampa Bay Advisory Board and has successfully challenged other CEOs and decision-makers to get further involved in local philanthropy. Through personal and corporate giving, Steven and his wife, Natalie, have underwritten the cost of life-changing experiences for nearly 20 local children and families. They also volunteer as “wish granters,” meaning they are not only underwriting, but also coordinating the details of whatever a child’s most heartfelt wish might be. They are truly difference-makers for one of the region’s most impactful nonprofits.

Make-A-Wish Southern Florida has granted more than 11,000 life-changing wishes since 1983 for children who have critical illnesses. It aims to grant a wish for every medically-eligible child in its territory and understands these experiences aren’t just nice, they’re necessary to the health and well-being of families at critical times in their lives. Wish kids most often ‘wish to be’ (something), ‘wish to meet’ (someone), ‘wish to go’ (somewhere), ‘wish to have’ (something), or ‘wish to give’ (to a cause) and the nonprofit organization makes this happen for the child and his/her entire family at no cost or obligation.

Wine’s World

fter a major setback for the original September 2017 date for the Tampa Theatre’s annual Wine Fest (Hurricane Irma - pretty major), the event was added to the March 2018 weekend of another of the Theatre’s big annual events, the Hollywood Awards Night. These are both really fun events that raise needed money to help keep the historic theater and programs running. Since its inception, the Wine Fest fundraiser has grown from a simple Wine Tasting event in 2002 to a multi-day affair. Always cleverly themed to a movie title, this year’s event was “Wine’s World,” and spread over 3 nights with different events each night. It started off with a “Movie Under the Stars” screening of the Mike Myers/Dana Carvey classic Wayne’s World. Second night featured delicious fare from Mise en Place paired with wines for each course. The Maritana Grille at the Don CeSar New Chef, and Savory New Menu

Story and photos by Melissa and Al Martino

A

ny reason to visit the beautiful Don CeSar Hotel is always welcome, and especially so to experience the new menu at the Maritana Grille, created by its new Chef du Cuisine, Emily Ferrari.

With her residency at the Maritana Grille, Emily is bringing her own Florida Southern comfort food to the table, with French and Italian influences, and heavy on seafood. Her interest in chemistry sneaks into some of her dishes with the use of vegetable powders for a little taste tweak. Ms. Ferrari uses locally sourced food whenever possible, finding a lot of produce at Brick Street Hydroponic Farms for ultimate freshness. Seafood is also locally sourced with some exceptions. She changes out the menu according to the season.

Emily’s looks belie her experience. She could easily pass as a high school senior, but has too much culinary background on her resume. She’s always been in food service as she worked her way through the Art Institute of Atlanta, and earning her bachelor’s degree in chemistry—with an emphasis on food science— at USF. Her most recent past restaurants employ have been the Hyatt Regency Atlanta’s Polaris Restaurant, and the Vinoy Renaissance.

O

ur dinner experience was just delightful. The food was superb, beautifully plated, and the staff was very friendly and attentive. From a menu that has many delicious options, we chose to start with the Beet Carpaccio Salad with roasted baby beets, fennel, candied walnuts, blue cheese, frisée, and a citrus vinaigrette. An amazing Focaccia Bread was irresistible and quickly devoured. Our entrees were the Seared Chilean Sea Bass with green beans and spinach infused risotto, and the Double Pork Chop with pine nut purée, chargrilled butternut squash, and bourbon apple glaze. A very special dessert was “The Reveal,” which was chocolate nirvana. A large chocolate egg was presented, and our waiter (Noel - very charming - ask for him!) then pours hot chocolate over it and it opens like a flower to reveal mint mousse with Thin Mint Girl Scout cookies.

The Maritana Grille cont

T

he Don Cesar (AKA “The Pink Palace”) has several restaurants on the premises, and The Maritana Grill is their fine dining spot, located just off the lobby. The restaurant has an intimate feel, and will be undergoing expansion renovations in the coming months. The decor is subtly nautical, with white tablecloths, wainscoting on the walls, and navy blue carpet and chairs. A few sea-themed touches include a display of glass bubbles in the center of the restaurant, and some silver sea creature adornments. Also two fishtanks along one wall will catch your eye when you realize what seemed like green vegetation turns out to be a fascinating eel when he decides to explore his tank. A visit to The Don is not complete without a stroll around the magnificent property and a little history lesson on the venerable 1928 hotel which has many tales to tell as it played host to the elite, movie stars, presidents, and an occasional gangster back in the day. A few steps out the back door of The Don, and you are overlooking some of the most spectacular beachfront along our coast. We did manage to catch an amazing sunset during our visit.

DAN BLOCK Block Party A St Louis Connection

lock Party is a joyous event, and the latest album from saxophonist and clarinetist Dan Block on Miles High Records. The album spans several generations of jazz. The musicians are fellow transplants from Block’s native St. Louis to the jazz mecca of NY City, along with his brother and guitarist, Rob Block. Block feels comfortable expressing himself in traditional Dixieland jazz bands as well as bop, modal jazz and beyond. That scope is relected on Block Party. The album also features bassist and St. Louis native Neal Caine, Tokyoborn pianist Tadataka Unno and drummer Aaron Kimmel. www.danblockmusic.com

JOE KYE Migrants

K

orean-born, Seattle-raised Joe Kye is a violinist, composer, and vocalist who discovered the magic of the loop pedal in college. That vision resonates with a bittersweet optimism, a measured hope for change and coming together on Migrants, his debut full-length album and third release. Kye’s crisp playing, layered in swirls of pizzicato arpeggios and percussive elements, forms the foundation for clever and reflexive lyrics and a tender, urgent voice.

LESLIE PINTCHIK You Eat My Food, You Drink My Wine, You Steal My Girl!

I

t is a perfect fit for the sharp-elbows vibe of the title piece by pianist/composer Pintchik, with its sambafunk groove, understated humor and fender-bender of an ending. It is also the perfect title for Pintchik’s new album, which features six of her original tunes and two standards. Pintchik has penned a collection of songs overflowing with warmth, humor, tenderness, depth and smarts—without forsaking her razor-sharp edge.

T

he Swedish band, Sabaton, researches their battle topics to ensure the songs paint accurate and objective portraits of the historical event they’re singing about, which are narrated from a first-person view as a soldier caught in the line of fire. Sabaton aims to remain politically neutral in their role as musical war historians. They have reached their position as heavy metal’s AAA-torchbearer after playing endless amount of unforgettable live shows. The Last Stand is more evidence of Sabaton’s abilities. www.sabaton.net

JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE Man of the Woods

Man of the Woods” thrusts Timberlake into the funk, soul and disco of the 1970s. Timbaland and the Neptunes handle the vast majority of the production. Check out “Higher Higher,” a brilliant 70s homage. Chris Stapleton shows up a few times as a songwriter, on guitar, and on “Say Something,” in duet. His writing, especially on “The Hard Stuff,” is evocative, and on “Say Something,” he sings with a true purpose. The guitars and basslines on this album are quite punchy. But Timberlake is at his best on the title tune, “Man of the Woods.” www.amazon.com

WHAT IS ART?

The Conceptual and the Surreal Collide in Dalí/Duchamp at the Salvador Dali Museum Photos of the exhibition by Melissa W. Martino

D

iscover how two inventive, irreverent individuals forever changed how we see art – and artists – at The Dalí’s special exhibition, Dalí/Duchamp, on view through May 27. This exhibition is the first of its kind dedicated to the friendship and mutual influence of two of the twentieth century’s greatest artists – the father of conceptual art, Marcel Duchamp, and Salvador Dalí, the champion of traditional painting and the imagination. Dalí/Duchamp is organized by The Dalí Museum and the Royal Academy of Arts in London. This is the only opportunity visitors will have to see the exhibit in the States. As personalities, Dalí and Duchamp were worlds apart; Dalí was the self-professed genius and first modern artist-celebrity, whereas Duchamp had a quieter, subtler demeanor. Duchamp was associated with the art movements of Dada and Surrealism, and is famous for conceptual art and creating the first “readymade,” an everyday object presented as a work of art. In contrast, Dalí was a defender of

Salvador Dalí’s Venus de Milo with Drawers (and PomPoms), bronze painted white with ermine pompoms.

Dali and Duchamp shared a love of games. 70

classical techniques in painting and the champion of artistic tradition. He was a surrealist and a superior technician who, like Duchamp, thought the idea of an artwork was of prime importance. Despite their differences, they maintained an enduring bond of mutual admiration. What fueled this surprising relationship was deeper than their shared artistic interests – among them eroticism, language, optics and games. More fundamentally, the two men were united by a combination of humor and skepticism, which led both, in different ways, to challenge conventional views of art and life. On exhibit are more than 50 works showcasing some of Dalí’s most acclaimed paintings and sculptures, including three paintings never before seen at The Dalí as well as Duchamp’s groundbreaking assemblages and ready-mades. It also includes the less familiar: photographs by Dalí, paintings by Duchamp, and correspondence and collaborations between the two artists and is organized as a dialogue between them through four themes – Identities and a Challenge to

Marcel Duchamp’s L.H.O.O.Q., 1958. Moustache and goatee added to reproduction of Mona Lisa printed in the Enciclopedia Universal.

Duchamp made a miniature compilation of his works, recreated in painstaking detail. www.AccentOnTampaBay.com

WHAT IS ART? CONT Painting; Playing Games; Science and Religion; and the Body and the Object. Beyond the exhibition gallery, a variety of corresponding programs inspired by Dalí and Duchamp are happening, including the Coffee with a Curator lecture series; Artflix, the Museum’s themed movies series; activities for families and more. The Museum will also host monthly Thursday evening game nights for the community continuing through May, as an homage to Dalí and Duchamp’s love of games.

JIKO’s “The Cooking Place” at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge

Story and photos by Melissa Wolcott Martino and Al Martino

O

ne of the most popular dining spots at Walt Disney World’s myriad choices of fine restaurants can be found at the Animal Kingdom Lodge — Jiko “The Cooking Place.” Folks seem to gravitate to the cuisine that is not commonplace. Traditional inspirations coming from the continent of Africa are fused with Indian and Mediterranean cuisine into the dishes you will find on Jiko’s very appealing menu. The decor has a modern, comfortable motif, with soft lighting and artistic touches of Africa.

W

e hadn’t been to Jiko’s in years and decided to see what’s new. The food choices are seasonal, so you can always look forward to new taste treats. The wines you will find at Jiko’s will also be from Africa or use grapes grown in Africa, providing some provocative tastes with over 135 to choose from. Some African beers are available, and the cocktails are also African inspired. Za’atar Spiced Beet Salad

reads and flatbreads utilize common African ingredients like flax seeds and goat butter and are all made in-house. Dips such as the hummus with garlic, cumin and sundried olives, the mayo chutney, and the butternut squash with fried spices and vegetables bring the already flavorful breads alive.

O

ne of the most popular appetizers is the Grilled Wild Boar Tenderloin with mealie pap (sort of a gritty corn), chakalaka (vegetable relish), truffle oil, and micro cilantro. The wine we tried with the boar was a Warwick Old Bush Vine Pinotage, grapes of which were grown in Africa. This wine goes great with pretty much any food. The Za’atar Spiced Beet Salad with roasted heirloom beets, yogurt, and Asian pear tasted as pretty as it looked. If you like Greek spanakopita, you will like Jiko’s Inguday Tibs in Brik. It’s a crispy filo filled with mushrooms, spinach and cheese, with an apple and curry vinaigrette. Manti Dumplings have a spicy tomato sauce, saffron yogurt and mint chutney. This was served with a Cederberg Buketraube wine. The grape is only grown in Africa, and Jiko’s is the only resort in the USA to serve it. continued on next page

he entrees are amazing and bursting with flavor. The Moroccan Mrouzia-Style Lamb Tagine elicited the most oohs and ahs at the table. It was cooked with saffron and had a sweet/salty taste. Served with parsnip silk, root spinach, Medjool date smoor, and a slightly acidic pomegranate glaze. The melt-in-your-mouth Oak-grilled Filet Mignon was served with pumpkin pap isidudu, Brussels sprouts, and caramelized onions. Seared Hokkaido Sea Scallops were sweet and buttery and were served with a delicious braised pork belly, red kuri squash smear, wild mushrooms, and chermoula (relish marinade). A crisp, sweet, Morgenster Sauvignon Blanc/Semillion Blend wine was served with this dish and is also only found at Jiko’s. Another lovely entree was the Durham Ranch Elk Loin, with celery root puree, hibiscus-candied apples, turnip atjar (vegetable pickle), and lemon-elk jus.

You can enjoy watching the cooks prepare meals in the open kitchen area. 102

he GIs called her Joey. Hundreds owed their lives to the tiny Filipina woman who was one of the top spies for the Allies during World War II, stashing explosives, tracking Japanese troop movements, and smuggling maps across enemy lines for Gen. Douglas MacArthur. Josefina Guerrero walked through gunfire to bandage wounds and close the eyes of the dead. Her valor earned her the Medal of Freedom, but the thing that made her an effective spy was a disease that was destroying her.Guerrero suffered from leprosy, which so horrified the Japanese they refused to search her. After the war, army chaplains found her in a leper colony and campaigned for the US government to welcome a foreigner with leprosy. The fight brought her celebrity, which she used to speak for other sufferers. However, the notoriety haunted her after the disease was arrested, and she had to find a way to disappear.

A

nnabel Taylor, a beekeeper’s daughter, grows up wild and carefree on the moors of England in the late 1860s, following in the footstep of her mother, a beautiful witch. Annabel’s friend is Jevan, who lives his life on the verge of destruction. His devotion to Annabel is full of twists and turns. But when Jevan travels to London to receive an education, Annabel is devastated. Then Alex-the heir to the Saltonstall legacy--comes into her life. Alex is arrogant and self-assured, but is bewitched by Annabel’s beauty, and feels drawn to her by something he can’t explain. Alex and Annabel are worlds apart socially, but that doesn’t stop him from demanding her hand in marriage. When Annabel refuses, she is forced into an impossible situation, which leads Jevan to believe she has betrayed him, regardless of the fact that her decision saves him from the hangman’s noose. Disturbing revelations thrust Annabel into a startling reality, where nothing is as it seems. Jane Jordan began writing seriously in 2004, after she first visited Exmoor in England. She was captivated by the local myths and legends, and her first novel, Ravens Deep (her gothic vampire trilogy) was released. Gaining more insight into the history and mysteries of ancient places, and having been intrigued by the supernatural, inspiration came for The Beekeeper’s Daughter. www.AccentOnTampaBay.com

THE AUSTRALIAN BEE GEES SHOW by Melissa W. Martino

f you never had the opportunity to see the Bee Gees in concert, all hope is not lost. The Australian Bee Gees create an uncanny tribute the Bee Gees, in all their different incarnations through the years, at the Excalibur Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. The Australian Bee Gees formed in Melbourne, Australia in 1996, and since then they have played in over 50 countries around the world. Having performed as the Australian Bee Gees for quite a while, David Davis, David Scott, and Wayne Hosking have honed their craft to a T, and are considered the world’s best Bee Gees tribute band. The enthusiastic crowds at the Excalibur’s Thunder Showroom attest to that fact. The multi-media show covers all the favorite Bee Gee tunes as well as some you may not be as familiar with. Band banter in between songs makes the guys even more relatable. David D. performs as Barry Gibb on guitar and lead vocals, bringing that amazing falsetto to life on such tunes as “Night Fever,” “Tragedy,” “Stayin’ Alive,” “To Love Somebody,” and many more. David S. performs as Robin Gibb rendering precisely such tunes as “I Started A Joke,” “Massachusetts,” “I’ve Gotta Get a Message to You,” and “Nights on Broadway.” Although Maurice didn’t sing lead on many Bee Gee tunes, he was a prolific writer along with his brothers for the group. Wayne takes his spot on backup vocals and keyboards. He sings “Islands In The Stream” with Michael in the show. The show band is rounded out with Rick Powell on drums and vocals, and Tony Richards on bass guitar.

Guests will be transported directly into Las Vegas’ history, where the static signs come to life while accompanied by music from some of the entertainment industry’s most storied performers.

Smart gambling takes the day Dear Mark: I just wanted to say thank you. My husband and I just got back from Las Vegas where we played blackjack. We would never have known about the now common payoff of 6 to 5 without your column. We played at Treasure Island, which did pay 3/2 on multi-deck. We feel that knowledge, your progressive betting, and a lit114

SOUTH POINT HOTEL, CASINO AND SPA UNVEILS $40 MILLION RENOVATION OF GUEST ROOMS www.southpointcasino.com South Point Hotel, Casino and Spa unveiled a $40 million remodel plan includes 2,049 rooms and 84 suites featuring new furniture, luxury flooring, crown molding, mini refrigerator and bathroom upgrades. tle luck resulted in our coming home with a net win! Gloria S. I am particularly pleased that you not only remembered my writing of the disadvantages of 6/5 blackjack, but you focused on wagers that have less than a two percent house edge. Six/five blackjack has become far too prevalent in Las Vegas,

and everywhere else for that matter. Unfortunately, the uninformed masses continue to hop up on a blackjack stool and allow the casinos to pilfer their wallet. By getting paid 3 to 2, and NOT 6 to 5, you get maximum value for your blackjacks. These 6/5 games give the casino an edge of almost 1.5%. Allow me an example, Gloria. If you are playing $10 a hand on a 3/2 game, a blackjack returns $15. On a 6 to 5 game with a $10 bet, you only get paid $12. Since you can expect, on average, five blackjacks per hour, three bucks shy per blackjack equals $15, hence the 1.5% casino advantage.

Repurpose Antiques For The Garden W

hen it comes to collectibles, it is always wise to know what you’ve got and know what it’s worth. Some objects like planters, mugs, cups, and vases can be very valuable but some are just collectible and cheap too. So, once you have an accurate appraisal of

your antique and find out if it is trash or treasure, you might want to consider new ways to use and enjoy it. Repurposing is so popular that many folks are looking at some aging objects in a whole new way. Before you send that inexpensive vintage piece out to the curb, consider transforming it into doing double duty in your garden. From broken brass saxophones to chipped German beer steins, anything can hold a plant, vegetable, or flower. Think about creating a colorful display in your garden by using value-less antique ceramics or even typewriters or suitcases as planters and garden dividers. HYPERLINK “http://EverybodyGardens.com” EverybodyGardens.com Editor, Doug Oster says “Anything can be a container as long as it has drainage.” So don’t fret over that chipped beyond repair vintage ceramic tea pot or rusty filing cabinet. Paint it brightly and add some plant life to it. 118

Instead, make these old objects into a cute flower pot. Drill a hole for drainage and line them up with other repurposed pottery pieces on a patio stone wall or suspended on your porch near your hanging wind chimes. You can even secure each vintage coffee mug or teapot by their handles by sticking the handle in between the slat space of your picket fence. Old metal desks, chairs, even beds can be transformed into flower or vegetable gardens by replacing seats, drawers or mattresses with plants or flowers. Chipped, cracked or broken items can have new life as hosts in your garden. Try it as Spring comes alive in your neck of the woods and use your antique, vintage or simply aging objects around the house as the focus of this year’s new garden project. Dr. Lori Verderame is the author, Ph.D. antiques appraiser, and award-winning TV personality who appears on History channel’s #1 show, The Curse of Oak Island. FOS MASTIHA A Deliciously Sweet Liqueur www.ambrosiagrp.com/about-mastiha.html

F

os Mastiha is a unique spirit from the island of Chios, Greece. It is a clear spirit with a sweet taste, which derives from the rare and natural tree resin cultivated exclusively on the small island. The Mastiha Tree, which is also known as the Crying Tree, only grows and is cultivated on Chios. Nowhere else in the world has it been able to take root, which makes it exclusively Greek. Created by the Ambrosia Group, Fos Mastiha is made from the best ingredients and tradition involving a delicate process of aging, distillation, secret ingredients and special formulas. Fos Mastiha can be enjoyed by itself of mixed in different cocktails. It is great as an aperitif or digestif as the Matiha has many digestive benefits. Mastiha has been used for thousands of years by all civilizations, the Greeks, the Romans, the Ottomans, and many others. In 5th century BC, Hippocrates recommended Mastiha as an excellent digestive, and as a refreshing breathalyzer among other medicinal applications. During the Byzantine years, Chios becomes famous, and Mastiha is known as a luxury item, and the emperor’s favorite drink. Every bottle of FOS uses the same distillation and harvesting heritage that has been used for thousands of years, and enjoyed by royalty, emperors, philosophers, sultans, ancient Greeks, and the gods of Olympus.
