fter a major setback for the original September 2017 date for the Tampa Theatre’s annual Wine Fest (Hurricane Irma - pretty major), the event was added to the March 2018 weekend of another of the Theatre’s big annual events, the Hollywood Awards Night. These are both really fun events that raise needed money to help keep the historic theater and programs running. Since its inception, the Wine Fest fundraiser has grown from a simple Wine Tasting event in 2002 to a multi-day affair. Always cleverly themed to a movie title, this year’s event was “Wine’s World,” and spread over 3 nights with different events each night. It started off with a “Movie Under the Stars” screening of the Mike Myers/Dana Carvey classic Wayne’s World. Second night featured delicious fare from Mise en Place paired with wines for each course. A very lively

With her residency at the Maritana Grille, Emily is bringing her own Florida Southern comfort food to the table, with French and Italian influences, and heavy on seafood. Her interest in chemistry sneaks into some of her dishes with the use of vegetable powders for a little taste tweak. Ms. Ferrari uses locally sourced food whenever possible, finding a lot of produce at Brick Street Hydroponic Farms for ultimate freshness. Seafood is also locally sourced with some exceptions. She changes out the menu according to the season.

Emily’s looks belie her experience. She could easily pass as a high school senior, but has too much culinary background on her resume. She’s always been in food service as she worked her way through the Art Institute of Atlanta, and earning her bachelor’s degree in chemistry—with an emphasis on food science— at USF. Her most recent past restaurants employ have been the Hyatt Regency Atlanta’s Polaris Restaurant, and the Vinoy Renaissance.

ur dinner experience was just delightful. The food was superb, beautifully plated, and the staff was very friendly and attentive. From a menu that has many delicious options, we chose to start with the Beet Carpaccio Salad with roasted baby beets, fennel, candied walnuts, blue cheese, frisée, and a citrus vinaigrette. An amazing Focaccia Bread was irresistible and quickly devoured. Our entrees were the Seared Chilean Sea Bass with green beans and spinach infused risotto, and the Double Pork Chop with pine nut purée, chargrilled butternut squash, and bourbon apple glaze. A very special dessert was “The Reveal,” which was chocolate nirvana. A large chocolate egg was presented, and our waiter (Noel - very charming - ask for him!) then pours hot chocolate over it and it opens like a flower to reveal mint mousse with Thin Mint Girl Scout cookies.

he Don Cesar (AKA “The Pink Palace”) has several restaurants on the premises, and The Maritana Grill is their fine dining spot, located just off the lobby. The restaurant has an intimate feel, and will be undergoing expansion renovations in the coming months. The decor is subtly nautical, with white tablecloths, wainscoting on the walls, and navy blue carpet and chairs. A few sea-themed touches include a display of glass bubbles in the center of the restaurant, and some silver sea creature adornments. Also two fishtanks along one wall will catch your eye when you realize what seemed like green vegetation turns out to be a fascinating eel when he decides to explore his tank. A visit to The Don is not complete without a stroll around the magnificent property and a little history lesson on the venerable 1928 hotel which has many tales to tell as it played host to the elite, movie stars, presidents, and an occasional gangster back in the day. A few steps out the back door of The Don, and you are overlooking some of the most spectacular beachfront along our coast. We did manage to catch an amazing sunset during our visit.

iscover how two inventive, irreverent individuals forever changed how we see art – and artists – at The Dalí’s special exhibition, Dalí/Duchamp, on view through May 27. This exhibition is the first of its kind dedicated to the friendship and mutual influence of two of the twentieth century’s greatest artists – the father of conceptual art, Marcel Duchamp, and Salvador Dalí, the champion of traditional painting and the imagination. Dalí/Duchamp is organized by The Dalí Museum and the Royal Academy of Arts in London. This is the only opportunity visitors will have to see the exhibit in the States. As personalities, Dalí and Duchamp were worlds apart; Dalí was the self-professed genius and first modern artist-celebrity, whereas Duchamp had a quieter, subtler demeanor. Duchamp was associated with the art movements of Dada and Surrealism, and is famous for conceptual art and creating the first “readymade,” an everyday object presented as a work of art. In contrast, Dalí was a defender of

classical techniques in painting and the champion of artistic tradition. He was a surrealist and a superior technician who, like Duchamp, thought the idea of an artwork was of prime importance. Despite their differences, they maintained an enduring bond of mutual admiration. What fueled this surprising relationship was deeper than their shared artistic interests – among them eroticism, language, optics and games. More fundamentally, the two men were united by a combination of humor and skepticism, which led both, in different ways, to challenge conventional views of art and life. On exhibit are more than 50 works showcasing some of Dalí’s most acclaimed paintings and sculptures, including three paintings never before seen at The Dalí as well as Duchamp’s groundbreaking assemblages and ready-mades. It also includes the less familiar: photographs by Dalí, paintings by Duchamp, and correspondence and collaborations between the two artists and is organized as a dialogue between them through four themes – Identities and a Challenge to

various other exotic cats. BCR has built enclosures in a natural habitat with foliage and shelter on 55 acres in the Citrus Park area of north Tampa. They provide the best nutritional and medical care possible, and have conditioning and enrichment programs to provide the cats physical and psychological well being. he luck of the Irish was alive over the St. Patty’s Day weekend as Busch Gardens Tampa Bay welcomed yet another sweet baby giraffe. Say hello to Patty! Born on the eve of St. Patrick’s Day, Patty is 5’5 tall and weighs 105 lbs. She is the 3rd giraffe calf to be born at Busch Gardens in the last four months. You can see her and her mother, Bititi, on the Serengeti plain soon. This birth is part of Busch Gardens’ participation in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ (AZA) Species Survival Plan (SSP). The mission of the SSP is to cooperatively manage specific, and typically threatened or endangered, species populations within AZA-accredited facilities. Busch Gardens’ participation helps create genetically diverse, self-sustaining populations to guarantee the long-term future of these animals.

ne of the most popular dining spots at Walt Disney World’s myriad choices of fine restaurants can be found at the Animal Kingdom Lodge — Jiko “The Cooking Place.” Folks seem to gravitate to the cuisine that is not commonplace. Traditional inspirations coming from the continent of Africa are fused with Indian and Mediterranean cuisine into the dishes you will find on Jiko’s very appealing menu. The decor has a modern, comfortable motif, with soft lighting and artistic touches of Africa.

ne of the most popular appetizers is the Grilled Wild Boar Tenderloin with mealie pap (sort of a gritty corn), chakalaka (vegetable relish), truffle oil, and micro cilantro. The wine we tried with the boar was a Warwick Old Bush Vine Pinotage, grapes of which were grown in Africa. This wine goes great with pretty much any food. The Za’atar Spiced Beet Salad with roasted heirloom beets, yogurt, and Asian pear tasted as pretty as it looked. If you like Greek spanakopita, you will like Jiko’s Inguday Tibs in Brik. It’s a crispy filo filled with mushrooms, spinach and cheese, with an apple and curry vinaigrette. Manti Dumplings have a spicy tomato sauce, saffron yogurt and mint chutney. This was served with a Cederberg Buketraube wine. The grape is only grown in Africa, and Jiko’s is the only resort in the USA to serve it. continued on next page

he entrees are amazing and bursting with flavor. The Moroccan Mrouzia-Style Lamb Tagine elicited the most oohs and ahs at the table. It was cooked with saffron and had a sweet/salty taste. Served with parsnip silk, root spinach, Medjool date smoor, and a slightly acidic pomegranate glaze. The melt-in-your-mouth Oak-grilled Filet Mignon was served with pumpkin pap isidudu, Brussels sprouts, and caramelized onions. Seared Hokkaido Sea Scallops were sweet and buttery and were served with a delicious braised pork belly, red kuri squash smear, wild mushrooms, and chermoula (relish marinade). A crisp, sweet, Morgenster Sauvignon Blanc/Semillion Blend wine was served with this dish and is also only found at Jikoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s. Another lovely entree was the Durham Ranch Elk Loin, with celery root puree, hibiscus-candied apples, turnip atjar (vegetable pickle), and lemon-elk jus.

f you never had the opportunity to see the Bee Gees in concert, all hope is not lost. The Australian Bee Gees create an uncanny tribute the Bee Gees, in all their different incarnations through the years, at the Excalibur Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. The Australian Bee Gees formed in Melbourne, Australia in 1996, and since then they have played in over 50 countries around the world. Having performed as the Australian Bee Gees for quite a while, David Davis, David Scott, and Wayne Hosking have honed their craft to a T, and are considered the world’s best Bee Gees tribute band. The enthusiastic crowds at the Excalibur’s Thunder Showroom attest to that fact. The multi-media show covers all the favorite Bee Gee tunes as well as some you may not be as familiar with. Band banter in between songs makes the guys even more relatable. hen it comes to collectibles, it is always wise to know what you’ve got and know what it’s worth. Some objects like planters, mugs, cups, and vases can be very valuable but some are just collectible and cheap too. So, once you have an accurate appraisal of

your antique and find out if it is trash or treasure, you might want to consider new ways to use and enjoy it. Repurposing is so popular that many folks are looking at some aging objects in a whole new way. Before you send that inexpensive vintage piece out to the curb, consider transforming it into doing double duty in your garden. From broken brass saxophones to chipped German beer steins, anything can hold a plant, vegetable, or flower. Think about creating a colorful display in your garden by using value-less antique ceramics or even typewriters or suitcases as planters and garden dividers.
