2nd ANNUAL TAMPA INTERNATIONAL FRINGE FESTIVAL. Are you ready to Fringe? TIFF is now a ten day performing arts festival taking place at venues across historic Ybor City. The shows are unjuried, uncensored — meaning they were actually selected out of a hat! Shows come from as near as across town and as far as South Africa and Japan, this is truly an international affair. Two rock musicals, two magic shows, and too many shows to talk about here. hile 460 guests were having fun at the recent Habitat For Humanity Gala at the Vinoy Renaissance Resort, they managed to raise over $340k, enough to build seven Habitat Pinellas homes. The wonderfully successful event’s theme was Bandstand, and the designers of the VIP dining areas (for event sponsors) pulled out all the stops for some spectacular displays. Everything from ’30s jazz to ’50s rock and roll to today’s pop was well represented. The gala was emceed by Jerry Penacoli and Cyndi Edwards of NBC’s Daytime, and Habitat of Pinellas County CEO, Mike Sutton gave a review of the many accomplishments made by the organization. A delicious dinner by the Vinoy chefs, followed by a very lively live auction set the guests up for enjoyable entertainment and dance music by the Alex Harris Band. Some dancers from the Fred Astaire Dance Studios mingled and showed how it’s done. Make-A-Wish Southern Florida ROCKIN’ UNDER THE STARS Story and photos by Melissa W. Martino

he evening, themed “Rockin’ Under The Stars.” started off with classically trained violinists and ballet dancers entertaining guests in the lobby of the beautiful Grand Hyatt Tampa Bay who were sipping wine and nibbling on hors d’oeuvres. As the evening progressed musically, the violinists switched to classic rock (Eurythmics, Queen, etc.) and primed the guests for what was to come as they filed into the ballroom for an elegant three-course dinner by the Hyatt chefs. DJs then took over and continued with classic rock throughout the dinner, all leading up to a concert by Rock & Roll Hall of Famers Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. As fun as it was, it was just the icing on the cake of an evening that was about much more important matters—raising money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. And raise money they did. The generous sponsors and guests of the affair raised $325,000, through silent and live auctions, which will provide life-changing wishes for more than 40 critically-ill children in the Tampa Bay area. One hundred percent of the net proceeds go to the charity. Chairing the black tie event was Steve Gillis, CEO of Transportation Control Systems, and a major philanthropic donor. Videos were shown of some of the children who have benefitted from the nonprofit program, and one of them was present at the event. “Emily” thanked donors for providing her—and consequently her family—for a much needed lift in her constant and life-long battle with cystic fibrosis. Her wish was a safari in Africa, which was granted, and we got to see her joy as her dream came true via her video. Make-A-Wish fulfills the wishes of children at absolutely no cost to the family. The Southern Florida chapter of the charity has granted more than 11,000 life-changing wishes since 1983.

y the hotel entrance is a delightful hand-painted mural with Bavarian-costumed figures painted by world-famous artist, Maxine Albro in 1957. The hotel is built on a hill with a gradual slope, so some guest rooms that are higher up have a view of the ocean. I’ve stayed in several rooms, and they are all individually decorated, so you have a “new” experience every time you stay there. All have charming dutch doors, and are homey and inviting with the most important feature — comfortable beds! The guest rooms I have occupied had fireplaces in them for even cozier contentment. Some have balconies, all have wifi, cable TV and coffee makers. Included in the hotel rate is a delicious continental breakfast with orange juice, beverages, and homemade croissants and pastries from a local bakery. The hotel has a heated pool and dry sauna rooms with an ocean view as well. A common deck area is very popular for guests to relax and enjoy an ocean view. A feature that will appeal to folks traveling with their furry friends is that Hofsas House is dog-friendly with certain guest rooms set aside for them, and has a “Doggie Welcome Package.” Carmel itself is a dog-friendly town, with many restaurants accepting them, and they can run off-leash on the beach.

alk out the front door of the Hofsas House and you are right in the heart of things. You will see why this uncommercial enclave has been a haven for artists, writers, and photographers for years, which is celebrated by the Hofsas House. There are more than 80 art galleries all within walking distance. The hotel even has a “Get Artsy” package which includes a stay in the same room that Maxine Albro lived in, with a cheese tray and bottle of wine. Scattered amongst all those galleries are some fabulous restaurants. The friendly staff at Hofsas House will gladly recommend some to you. Upon check-in at the hotel you will also receive wine tasting passes to several Carmel tasting rooms. My companion and I had a lovely meal at Anton & Michel’s, just a few short blocks from the hotel. We ordered Garlic-Herb Roasted Chicken Breast with root vegetables ragout, spinach gnocchi, and Grilled Lamb Chops with romensco sauce, cashew pesto and roasted fingerling potatoes. The menu changes seasonally, but is always deliciously creative. I highly recommend this elegant restaurant located on Mission Street. Also on Mission Street is the

iscover how two inventive, irreverent individuals forever changed how we see art – and artists – at The Dalí’s special exhibition, Dalí/Duchamp, on view through May 27. This exhibition is the first of its kind dedicated to the friendship and mutual influence of two of the twentieth century’s greatest artists – the father of conceptual art, Marcel Duchamp, and Salvador Dalí, the champion of traditional painting and the imagination. Dalí/Duchamp is organized by The Dalí Museum and the Royal Academy of Arts in London. This is the only opportunity visitors will have to see the exhibit in the States. As personalities, Dalí and Duchamp were worlds apart; Dalí was the self-professed genius and first modern artist-celebrity, whereas Duchamp had a quieter, subtler demeanor. Duchamp was associated with the art movements of Dada and Surrealism, and is famous for conceptual art and creating the first “readymade,” an everyday object presented as a work of art. In contrast, Dalí was a defender of

classical techniques in painting and the champion of artistic tradition. He was a surrealist and a superior technician who, like Duchamp, thought the idea of an artwork was of prime importance. Despite their differences, they maintained an enduring bond of mutual admiration. What fueled this surprising relationship was deeper than their shared artistic interests – among them eroticism, language, optics and games. More fundamentally, the two men were united by a combination of humor and skepticism, which led both, in different ways, to challenge conventional views of art and life. On exhibit are more than 50 works showcasing some of Dalí’s most acclaimed paintings and sculptures, including three paintings never before seen at The Dalí as well as Duchamp’s groundbreaking assemblages and ready-mades. It also includes the less familiar: photographs by Dalí, paintings by Duchamp, and correspondence and collaborations between the two artists and is organized as a dialogue between them through four themes – Identities and a Challenge to

Eight Tibetan monks from the Drepung Gomang Monastery in India will again bring to St. Petersburg teachings of ancient ways and beliefs that create the possibility of global peace, non-violent conflict reso-

lution, compassion and wisdom. During the opening ceremony on Tuesday, May 29, at 10:15 a.m., the monks will chant, play long Tibetan horns and consecrate the site of the mandala. Immediately following, they begin the creation of the mandala by first drawing the lines for the design on a base and then begin filling it in with colored sand. Throughout the six-day creation of the Sacred Mandala, the monks pour millions of grains of sand through a Chakpur, which is a funnel-shaped tool. This funnel is filled with colored sand and then rasped to release a fine stream of sand. ecently Disney’s Animal Kingdom celebrated its 20th Anniversary in a ceremony marking two decades of wonderful experiences. Gathered at the Harambe Theater, drummers, dancers, stilt performers and Disney characters joined Disney executives in a ceremony observing the 20th anniversary of the park. Joe Rohde, Creative Portfolio Executive for Walt Disney Imagineering, led the creation of Disney’s Animal Kingdom and reflected on its 20-year history. Djuan Rivers, vice president of Disney’s Animal Kingdom called out the success of the Disney Conservation Fund, aimed at reversing the decline of imperiled creatures in the wild. The 500-acre park is Disney’s largest, providing a great environment for the animals in their natural habitats. Hundreds owed their lives to the tiny Filipina woman who was one of the top spies for the Allies during World War II, stashing explosives, tracking Japanese troop movements, and smuggling maps across enemy lines for Gen. Douglas MacArthur. Josefina Guerrero walked through gunfire to bandage wounds and close the eyes of the dead. Her valor earned her the Medal of Freedom, but the thing that made her an effective spy was a disease that was destroying her.Guerrero suffered from leprosy, which so horrified the Japanese they refused to search her. After the war, army chaplains found her in a leper colony and campaigned for the US government to welcome a foreigner with leprosy. The fight brought her celebrity, which she used to speak for other sufferers. However, the notoriety haunted her after the disease was arrested, and she had to find a way to disappear.

f you never had the opportunity to see the Bee Gees in concert, all hope is not lost. The Australian Bee Gees create an uncanny tribute the Bee Gees, in all their different incarnations through the years, at the Excalibur Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. The Australian Bee Gees formed in Melbourne, Australia in 1996, and since then they have played in over 50 countries around the world. Having performed as the Australian Bee Gees for quite a while, David Davis, David Scott, and Wayne Hosking have honed their craft to a T, and are considered the world’s best Bee Gees tribute band. The enthusiastic crowds at the Excalibur’s Thunder Showroom attest to that fact. The multi-media show covers all the favorite Bee Gee tunes as well as some you may not be as familiar with. Band banter in between songs makes the guys even more relatable. Why would anyone be at a 6:5 table? Dear Mark: Using Basic Strategy, I am a firm believer in never taking even money on a blackjack. I detest games that offer a 6:5 payout vs. the normal 3:2. If one is forced to play a 6:5 game due to availability, is it still correct not to take even money on a 6:5 blackjack using basic strategy? Herb C. I begin with Pilarski’s rule #5: Never sit at a 6:5 table. Rule #9: At a 3:2 table, never take even money/insurance. Let’s begin with even money: Players who are riskaverse, or proverbially put, “plus valet in manibus avis unica quam dupla silvis,” which loosely translated from Latin means, “A bird in the hand is worth more than two in the woods” tend to always take even money. They figure this maxim points out that by passing up even money for your blackjacks, you risk losing a sure thing. I also recommend NEVER playing 6:5 Blackjack. Using the math of the game, and using a

Dear Mark: Are you allowed to ask a dealer if he or she is running hot or cold? Jenny S. Of course, you can, Jenny. Just ask. As to whether that information will do you any good on a randomly shuffled game, sorry, it won’t. Besides, whatever answer you do get from a dealer doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be getting the truth. For example, if a dealer is standing on a dead game, arms crossed in a standoffish position, it is a certainty he or she will say HOT! That uninterested stance is a dead giveaway that the dealer doesn’t want to be bothered. Likewise, some dealers will recognize a player from the past – for instance, a non-tipper – and will articulate, unequivocally, how HOT they are, hoping the inquiring player will move along. Personally, I always found it amusing that most players would NOT wander off to avoid the wrath of my dealing when I told them “I’m hot,” but instead, saw me as some gambling conquest to be made. “Okay, Buddy, take your best shot.” Yet, in the end, I’d beat them hardheartedly, but not because of my averred “I’m hot” reference. Their eventual beat down was always based on the combination of the math of the game and their poor play.

hief Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) designed private residences, buildings of worship, office buildings, schools and ateliers, urban civic architecture, and even art museums. Wright united the indoors with the outdoors in his buildings. He highlighted landscape vistas, gardens, and waterfalls. His Prairie style structures focused on what he called organic architecture which made his buildings stand out in the realm of 20th Century architectural history. Wright was interested in devising architectural plans that encouraged visitors to make a pilgrimage to the front door of his private homes as is the case with the famous Robie House on the campus of the University of Chicago. He thoughtfully designed stained glass windows to fit within an overall design aesthetic. For instance. Wright’s colorful stained glass windows for the children’s playhouse of the Avery Coonley House in Riverside, IL focused on the family’s active lifestyle with young children. Wright’s buildings made the hearth the center of the home. The nucleus of his residential structures, the fireplace served as a meeting place in Wright’s home designs with ample seating and room for a large roaring fire as is the case in Wright’s ar-

chitectural design of the massive hearth in the Darwin D. Martin House in Buffalo, NY. Wright designed all aspects of his buildings which became a mainstay in the history of architecture.
