A Well Planned Surprise is the Pinnacle of Success

By Mary Lou Janson

A

spirt that has earned the enviable honor of being France’s most awarded vodka recently served as a source of intrigue for select members of the Tampa Bay media. A blind tasting held at Mise En Place marked the first in a series of three “Dining in the Dark” events. Ro Patel, Tampa Bay’s expert mixologist and creative force behind many of the area’s most innovative bar programs, served as the tasting tour guide and the brand’s “Pinnacle Personality” ambassador. He artfully dodged direct questions, offering only hints as to the brand’s true identity. Guests were given cocktails concocted to pair perfectly with the evening’s threecourse meal. After a refreshing welcome beverage made with the featured vodka and lemonade, a neat pour of the beverage helped prime tastebuds for the pairings ahead. The versatility of the vodka was as clear as its color. It is a perfect sipping vodka when served solo, sans any other ingredients. And it worked really well with such diverse accompaniments as the brine mixed into the martini and the orange marmalade added to the French Floridian. At the end of the meal, the big reveal was finally made. Pinnacle® Original Vodka proved to be the secret spirit that had kept the group sipping and smiling throughout the tasting. What makes this vodka stand out from its counterparts can be traced to the way it is made. It starts with 100 percent whole-grain wheat from Northern France which boasts the perfect blend of rich soil, limestone and clay. Next comes pure spring water from the Charente region that filters through the limestone. Finally, it is distilled five times in its home in the heart of France’s Cognac region. The results are the signature clarity, clean taste and smooth flavors associated with Pinnacle. Considering the premium ingredients and meticulous process that goes into producing this vodka, it is no wonder that Pinnacle Original has won 19 awards for quality and taste since 2013. Among its honors are the following: 92 Points Great Value Award at the 2018 Ultimate Spirits Competition, Gold 93 Points Best Buy at the 2017 Beverage Testing Institute Competition, and Gold Medal, 2015: SIP Award, Consumer Choice Competition. “We believe that when you start with exceptional ingredients, an exceptional product follows,” according to the brand’s press information. “”We use quality stills and every bit of our distillers’ energy, passion and expertise to create the most awarded French Vodka.” Where to purchase it: ABC Fine Liquors, Alpine Liquors, Alama Liquor or Carrollwood Fine Wine & Spirits within the Tampa Bay area. Meet Your Downtown Neighbors For A Franklin Street Block Party For Opening Of Mr. Rogers Documentary on June 14

T

ampa Theatre to Host an Evening of Interactive Community Fun for the Opening of New Mr. Rogers Documentary. Minister, musician, educator, and father Fred Rogers spent 50 years on television encouraging us to be good neighbors. Tampa Theatre will be one of only a handful of theatres in the country to open the new documentary Won’t You Be My Neighbor? In the spirit of Mr. Rogers’ enduring message, the historic movie palace and the Tampa Downtown Partnership will host a Franklin Street Block Party from 5:00 to 7:00pm before the 7:30pm screening of the film. Restaurants along the surrounding blocks of Franklin Street will be sampling house favorites out on the sidewalks in front of each location. Under the Theatre’s marquee, guests will experience a pop-up art exhibit; live chalk art with Holland King; artLAB artists live-painting Mr. Rogers-themed canvases; and the opportunity to meet representatives from community organizations including the Heart Gallery of Tampa Bay, the Henry B. Plant Museum, The Florida Museum of Photographic Arts, the Tampa Bay International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, WEDU-PBS, and more. Inside, Tampa Theatre will be collecting new and gently used sweaters and sneakers for adults and children to benefit The Spring of Tampa Bay and other local charities who care for our neighbors in need. The Sweater & Sneaker Drive will continue throughout the film’s multi-week run, because as Mr. Rogers said, “We live in a world in which we need to share responsibility. It’s easy to say ‘It’s not my child, not my community, not my world, not my problem.’ Then there are those who see the need and respond. I consider those people my heroes.” 711 N. Make-A-Wish Southern Florida ROCKIN’ UNDER THE STARS Story and photos by Melissa W. Martino

T

he evening, themed “Rockin’ Under The Stars.” started off with classically trained violinists and ballet dancers entertaining guests in the lobby of the beautiful Grand Hyatt Tampa Bay who were sipping wine and nibbling on hors d’oeuvres. As the evening progressed musically, the violinists switched to classic rock (Eurythmics, Queen, etc.) and primed the guests for what was to come as they filed into the ballroom for an elegant three-course dinner by the Hyatt chefs. DJs then took over and continued with classic rock throughout the dinner, all leading up to a concert by Rock & Roll Hall of Famers Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. As fun as it was, it was just the icing on the cake of an evening that was about much more important matters—raising money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. And raise money they did. The generous sponsors and guests of the affair raised $325,000, through silent and live auctions, which will provide life-changing wishes for more than 40 critically-ill children in the Tampa Bay area. One hundred percent of the net proceeds go to the charity. Chairing the black tie event was Steve Gillis, CEO of Transportation Control Systems, and a major philanthropic donor. Videos were shown of some of the children who have benefitted from the nonprofit program, and one of them was present at the event. “Emily” thanked donors for providing her—and consequently her family—for a much needed lift in her constant and life-long battle with cystic fibrosis. Her wish was a safari in Africa, which was granted, and we got to see her joy as her dream came true via her video. Make-A-Wish fulfills the wishes of children at absolutely no cost to the family. The Southern Florida chapter of the charity has granted more than 11,000 life-changing wishes since 1983.

Hofsas House

A Little Bit of Bavaria in Carmel-By-The-Sea, CA Story and photos by Melissa Wolcott Martino

C

armel-By-The-Sea is just loaded with charm, where rustic and Old World European style dwellings permeate an area abounding with lush vegetation, pine trees and gorgeous blooms. But there is still a standout with the Hofsas House, a family-owned inn in the heart of town. For over 70 years, the Hofsas family has been welcoming guests to their cozy 38-room inn.

y the hotel entrance is a delightful hand-painted mural with Bavarian-costumed figures painted by world-famous artist, Maxine Albro in 1957. The hotel is built on a hill with a gradual slope, so some guest rooms that are higher up have a view of the ocean. I’ve stayed in several rooms, and they are all individually decorated, so you have a “new” experience every time you stay there. All have charming dutch doors, and are homey and inviting with the most important feature — comfortable beds! The guest rooms I have occupied had fireplaces in them for even cozier contentment. Some have balconies, all have wifi, cable TV and coffee makers. Included in the hotel rate is a delicious continental breakfast with orange juice, beverages, and homemade croissants and pastries from a local bakery. The hotel has a heated pool and dry sauna rooms with an ocean view as well. A common deck area is very popular for guests to relax and enjoy an ocean view. A feature that will appeal to folks traveling with their furry friends is that Hofsas House is dog-friendly with certain guest rooms set aside for them, and has a “Doggie Welcome Package.” Carmel itself is a dog-friendly town, with many restaurants accepting them, and they can run off-leash on the beach.

alk out the front door of the Hofsas House and you are right in the heart of things. You will see why this uncommercial enclave has been a haven for artists, writers, and photographers for years, which is celebrated by the Hofsas House. There are more than 80 art galleries all within walking distance. The hotel even has a “Get Artsy” package which includes a stay in the same room that Maxine Albro lived in, with a cheese tray and bottle of wine. Scattered amongst all those galleries are some fabulous restaurants. The friendly staff at Hofsas House will gladly recommend some to you. Upon check-in at the hotel you will also receive wine tasting passes to several Carmel tasting rooms. My companion and I had a lovely meal at Anton & Michel’s, just a few short blocks from the hotel. We ordered Garlic-Herb Roasted Chicken Breast with root vegetables ragout, spinach gnocchi, and Grilled Lamb Chops with romensco sauce, cashew pesto and roasted fingerling potatoes. The menu changes seasonally, but is always deliciously creative. I highly recommend this elegant restaurant located on Mission Street. Also on Mission Street is the

A short stroll down Ocean Avenue, and you are at the iconic Carmel Beach with its majestic scenery, and a trail that meanders through landscaped gardens to Carmel Point. Before you head to the beach, stop by at the 5th Avenue Deli and pick up some lunch for a picnic. Best sandwiches in town! Drivable from Carmel are Point Lobos State Reserve, historic Cannery Row, Big Sur, the gorgeous 17Mile Drive, Pebble Beach, and more. DON MCLEAN Botanical Gardens

otanical Gardens is McLean’s 19th studio album, and first in 8 years. Intimacy can be found at the heart of this record, with Don penning personal numbers looking back on life, as well as his observations on youth and love. The inspiration for the project started years ago when he would walk in the beautiful gardens in Sydney, Australia near the Opera House. He would dream young dreams and find comfort and inspiration. The result is a raw, yet tight sound. In nearly 50 years, Don’s songs have become an iconic staple of American music. His biggest hit, “American Pie,” was recently recognized with high honors by BMI for achieving five (5) MillionAir certified airplay awards, along with “Vincent (Starry, Starry Night)” achieving three (3) Million-Air certified airplay awards. www.don-mclean.com.com

MIKE JONES & PENN JILLETTE The Show Before the Show

O

n this album piano master Mike Jones is joined by bassist Penn Jillette, the verbal half of the renowned magic duo Penn & Teller. Jones is the musical director for Penn & Teller’s Las Vegas show playing both before the show begins and during the act. Jazzy renditions of standards make up the bulk of album, including such tunes as “Broadway,” “Have You Met Miss Jones,” and “There is No Greater Love.” Jillette grounds the music with apt playing, even providing some snappy solos. Let’s face it — it’s magical. www.jonesjazz.com/

ALEXANDRA JACKSON Legacy & Alchemy

A

malgamating 20th-century Brazilian sounds with Chicago jazz and funk, singer Alexandra Jackson proves to be a sensitive, soulful vocalist well up to the task. The album pays homage to samba while mixing jazz, blues, soul, and bossa nova. She is supported by some of the most significant musicians in the genre. The mammoth project — bringing Brazilian music to mainstream — resulted in 23 tracks with more than 35 contributing artists in featured roles, and 100 musicians and engineers overall. www.AlexandraJMusic.com 42

THE OAK RIDGE BOYS 17th Avenue Revival

1

7th Avenue Revival brings Country Music Hall of Famers The Oak Ridge Boys back to their gospel roots, but with an edge. The vision was with a different kind of gospel — one that took a hard look at the early days of rock and roll, which was influenced by spiritual, or black gospel. The result is somewhat retro, yet new and fresh at the same time. The album was recorded at Nashville’s legendary RCA Studio A. For several of the songs, the Boys gathered around one microphone and let the harmonies shine. www.oakridgeboys.com

OWEN BRODER Heritage: the American Roots Project

O

n Heritage, Owen Broder combines several of modern jazz’s most acclaimed composers and arrangers with an outstanding ensemble of musicians to meld modern jazz with traditional forms like Appalachian folk, early blues, spirituals, and bluegrass. Broder’s project interprets these pieces through the voices of an eight-piece ensemble featuing Broder on woodwinds, and proves to be bold and inspirational. A standout track, “Goin’ Up Home,” builds in complexity, layering in jazz harmonies and infectious swing rhythms. www.owenbroder.com

DIALI CISSOKHO & KAIRA BA Routes

N

orth Caroina-based Sengalese kora master Diali Cissokho took his American bandmates to his hometown of M’bour to record this album. The band took their tracks back to North Carolina to weave in some gospel vocals and strings, resulting in a range from high-energy dance floor-friendly cuts to intimate and comtemplatice pieces. Diali’s storytelling and musical prowess give direction to Kaira Ba’s players carving new paths across the Atlantic. The album opens with cicadas in N.C., but by the end with “Night in M’bour” you are transported to Senegal. www.kairabamusic.com

DAVE MATTHEWS BAND

T

he Dave Matthews Band’s Summer 2018 tour is in support of their ninth studio LP, Come Tomorrow. DMB is known for playing its songs differently each time they’re performed live. This has become a staple of their live shows and has grown with the band since the early 1990s. In 1994, DMB released their debut studio album, Under the Table and Dreaming, featuring their first commercial hits “What Would You Say” (featuring John Popper of Blues Traveler on harmonica), “Satellite”, and “Ants Marching”. Its follow-up album, Crash brought the band national attention, culminating in a Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal for “So Much to Say” as well as four other nominations between the years 1996 and 1997. The band also achieved hits with “Crash into Me”, “Too Much”, and “Tripping Billies”. By 1997, DMB reached unparalleled levels of popularity across the United States and, to some degree, the world. The 2001 release of Everyday was a huge commercial success. The singles “I Did It”, “Everyday”, and “The Space Between”, brought the band an even larger level of popularity. The group’s 2009 album Big Whiskey & the GrooGrux King, debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, earning them their fifth consecutive number-one debut. By 2010, the Dave Matthews Band had sold over 50 million records worldwide. Their album, 2012’s Away from the World, debuted at number one on the Billboard chart, making Dave Matthews Band the first group to have six consecutive studio albums debut in the top spot. DMB has a new studio album coming out this summer.

ES is celebrating their 50th Anniversary with a new album and a tour that will bring them to the Tampa Bay area. The iconic group will make a stop at the CAPITOL THEATRE in Clearwater on THURSDAY, JULY 26, and thrill their audience with tunes from #YES50: Celebrating 50 Years of YES.

YES is, of course, one of the biggest bands in prog rock history and true pioneers of the genre. Founding member/Grammy winner/Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee Tony Kaye (keyboards; 1968-1971 and 19831995) will join Steve Howe (guitar since 1970), Alan White (drums since 1972), Geoff Downes (keyboards; first joined in 1980), Jon Davison (vocals since 2011) and Billy Sherwood (guitar/keyboards in the 1990s and the late Chris Squire’s choice to take over bass/vocals in 2015) for this summer’s tour as a special guest. Founded in 1968 by the late Chris Squire and Jon Anderson, Grammy-award winning recording artists YES has created some of the most important and influential music in rock history, such as iconic pieces “Roundabout,” “Close to the Edge,” “I’ve Seen All Good People,” “Owner of a Lonely Heart,” “Starship Trooper,” and countless others. The band’s albums, including Fragile, Close to the Edge, Tales from Topographic Oceans, Relayer, Going For the One and 90125, have been certified multi-platinum, doubleplatinum, platinum, and more by the RIAA, and have sold over 50 million records total during the band’s long and successful career that has so far spanned over five decades. Among the world’s most influential, ground-breaking, and respected progressive rock bands, YES continues creating masterful music that inspires musicians, fans and music lovers around the world.

NOTES FROM THE BAND: “Much has changed since I joined Yes in 1970, but the core elements of the band have remained consistent,” shares guitarist Steve Howe. “We want to mark this anniversary with a tour that encompasses some of our best-loved work and revisit a few classic pieces that have been lost for a while. We look forward to sharing the 50th anniversary with the fanbase, playing classic songs that celebrate the broad musical style of Yes.” “I have been blessed to be a member of this amazing band’s rhythm section for the past 46 years, mostly in the company of my great friend Chris Squire, and latterly alongside Chris’ chosen successor, Billy Sherwood, who is receiving recognition for stepping into Chris’ pre-eminent bass and vocals,” says drummer Alan White. “Each

night we are pausing to reflect on Chris’ importance to Yes, his desire that we should continue to share Yes music on stages worldwide, and the specific dedication of ‘Onward’ to his huge memory. I’m so grateful to continue to be performing on stages for our dedicated fans and look forward to celebrating our 50th Anniversary in America. It has been a great ride!” “Being a member of the band during its 50th anniversary is a privilege and honor,” adds Geoff Downes (keys). “It is awe-inspiring to reflect on the caliber and invention of the musicians who have forged the legacy of Yes since 1968, always pushing the boundaries. Playing on stage with founder member Tony Kaye to launch the 50th anniversary [on this year’s Cruise to the Edge] was a wonderful experience for the band and our fans, to whom we dedicate this special tour.”

3 Ways to Love The Florida Orchestra’s New Season

A CHILD OF OUR TIME (Nov. 9-11): Don’t know it? Understandable. This is the first time TFO will perform Michael Tippett’s oratorio, featuring The Master Chorale of Tampa Bay. What’s to love: Tippett, a pacifist, was inspired by Kristallnacht when he composed the oratorio, so it was a natural choice to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the “Night of Broken Glass” in partnership with the Florida Holocaust Museum. “It’s extraordinary as a dramatic, powerful, brand-new piece for the audience to hear, but it’s also very accessible, beautiful and memorable,” Francis said.

Michael Francis

f you’re expecting The Florida Orchestra’s next season to be a letdown after its 50th anniversary celebration, don’t. Music Director Michael Francis has put an enormous amount of thought into programming TFO’s most wide-ranging season yet. “It’s our first chance to show where we’re going as an orchestra in our new era,” he said. Looking beyond the big-name works – Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue – there’s so much more to adore. Here’s the inside scoop on three concerts you’ll fall in love with.

THE PLANETS (Feb. 15-17, 2019): This concert includes a hidden gem that is dear to Michael Francis’ heart: music as a living art form. He and his wife, Cindy, are sponsoring a new work by USF Associate Professor Baljinder Sekhon, as yet unnamed. What’s to love: Francis’ mission is two-pronged: explore the Masterworks in a new light and discover new music, especially Florida talent. “We’re showing that as the third biggest state, we have an incredible artistic voice,” Francis said. BRAHMS’ PIANO CONCERTO NO. 1 (March 29-31, 2019): Even if you’re already a Brahms fan, the rest of this program is more awesome than you realize. What’s to love: First of all, Michael Francis is stoked about working with pianist Benjamin Grosvenor in his TFO debut: “He is one of the great talents of our time.” This concert also features an unusual approach to Arnold Schoenberg’s Transfigured Night, based on the poem by Richard Dehmel. The beautiful piece will be performed mostly in the dark with the poetry on screen. “It will be deeply atmospheric and powerful,” Francis said. The Florida Orchestra: Performs regularly at the Straz Center in Tampa, Mahaffey in St. Petersburg and Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater. Concert series are on sale now at floridaorchestra.org or 727.892.3337 and 1.800.662.7286. Single tickets go on sale Aug. 13. www.AccentOnTampaBay.com

Explore the Surreal Landscape of Dalí’s Mediterranean World

Clyde Butcher Reveals Dalí’s Painted Landscapes as His Own Photographed Dreamscapes

urrently at the Dali Museum, Clyde Butcher: Visions of Dalí’s Spain delivers a glimpse into Salvador Dalí’s homeland. The Dalí commissioned Clyde Butcher, the nature photographer known as the “Ansel Adams of the Florida landscape,” to travel to Spain to capture a series of technically brilliant, epically scaled photographs. Throughout his career, Butcher’s photographs have altered people’s perceptions about the Florida environment, and now, will alter the understanding of the surrealist master and the landscape that made him. The Dalí’s new exhibition features 41 original photographs that transport viewers to the striking Catalonian coast, where they are invited to not only appreciate the beauty of Dalí’s beloved environs but also to contemplate the landscapes from an alternate perspective. For this project, Butcher was asked to produce a series of black and white photographs documenting the dramatic splendor of Dalí’s world. “Butcher’s unique abilities to capture the power of light, land and water in black & white deliver spectacular insights into the landscape that had such a profound influence on Dali’s vision and obsessions,” said Hank Hine, Dalí Museum Executive Director. The show is Butcher’s first photographic study

Port Lligat House of Spain. He captured the sublime beauty of Dalí’s Mediterranean world in exquisite detail through large scale, super-sharp monochromatic images. “Butcher did an incredible job of capturing the essence of this land that created Dalí,” said Peter Tush, Dalí Museum Curator of Education and exhibit curator. “The series of photographs displayed in the exhibition truly takes the viewer on an epic journey. “ Butcher himself will host book signings at The Dalí on Sept 29, and Nov 3. Visitors can also join Tush for a “Butcher + Dalí” Coffee with a Curator session on Tues, July 3. The exhibit runs through Nov 25. For more information and events details visit www.thedali.org.

Disney Springs’ Newest Hot Spot Master Sommelier George Miliotes and Executive Chef Ron Rupert Offer Tantalizing Wine and Food Pairings in a Sleek Setting

O

ne of only 158 Master Sommeliers in the United States and of only 249 in the entire world, George Miliotes chose to set up shop in Disney Springs with his new venture, Wine Bar George. With this most prestigious title, you might expect a stuffy wine snob, but George is very affable and down-to-earth, and as expected, really knows his stuff. As a matter of fact, Wine Bar George is the only Master Sommelier-led wine bar in Florida. George is not a stranger to the world of Disney as he was part of the California Grill opening at Disney’s Contemporary Resort and managed it until 2002. He also created an award-winning wine list for that restaurant. George makes annual treks to wine-growing regions in Europe and South Africa, keeping relationships with vintners and joining in the winemaking process helping to create custom blends. Wine Bar George has over 130 wines served by the bottle, glass, and ounces. The wine list includes more than 40 varietals from regions around the world, using the Coravin, the Vinfinity system and wine on tap. The wine bar also offers a variety of cocktails, beer, and cider. Wine Bar George is sleek, casual and minimalist, with lots of oak woods and black metal supports, and some wine barrels serving as table stands, all to maximize the effect of the pairing of wine and food.

E

xecutive Chef Ron Rupert is supplying the tasty foods that are perfectly paired with various wines. Ron is also an alumnus of the California Grill, so the two are seasoned associates. We had the delightful occasion to experience pairings from the Wine Bar George menu, which leans toward Southern Mediterranean. We started our repast with a charcuterie board selection of artisanal cheeses and crafted meats and condiments. Then came small plates with creations such as Crispy Mac & Cheese Bites with tomato nage and pecorino, House-Made Meatballs with triple cheese polenta and tomato sauce, and Chicken

Family Style plates followed with Skirt Steak Chimichurri with roasted potatoes, a Grilled Whole Greek Sea Bass with cannellini bean ragout, and a Wine Braised Chicken with mushrooms and Yukon potato hash. All were served with seasonal vegetables. The paired wines were a Selbach-Oster Bomer Zeltinger Schlossberg, Mosel, Germany ‘16 (a lovely Riesling which can be found only at Wine Bar George in Florida) and a Foillard Côte du Py Morgon, France ‘16 (a very seductive Beaujolais.) Dessert arrived in the form of a perfect Florida favorite — Key Lime pie, and a very unique Olive Oil Cake with candied olives and lemon mascarpone.

PHIL GERNHARD Record Man by Bill DeYoung

P

hil Gernhard, Record Man is the story of a self-made music mogul who created nearly fifty years’ worth of chart-topping songs. From a tiny office and studio in Florida, he co-wrote the Royal Guardsmen’s “Snoopy vs. the Red Baron,” America’s fastest-selling single of 1966. He revived the career of singer Dion DiMucci with the ballad “Abraham, Martin and John”—a million seller. He discovered and produced hit records for Lobo, Jim Stafford, and the Bellamy Brothers. Through a long collaboration with music business icon Mike Curb, he launched to fame many others, including country superstars Tim McGraw and Rodney Atkins. In Nashville and Los Angeles, Phil Gernhard was a legend.

Bill DeYoung is the author of Skyway: The True Story of Tampa Bay’s Signature Bridge and the Man Who Brought It Down. Nationally recognized for his music journalism, he was a writer and editor at various Florida and Georgia newspapers for over three decades. University Press of Florida • www.upf.com

SON OF REAL FLORIDA Stories Of My Life

University Press of Florida www.upf.com

by Jeff Klinkenberg

J

eff Klinkenberg has explored what makes Florida unique for nearly half a century, and Son of Real Florida is a compelling retrospective of essays on the state he knows so well. Klinkenberg recounts what it was like to grow up in pre-air conditioning Florida and how he became a newspaper reporter in mid-century Miami. He introduces us to the stout-hearted folks who have learned to live and even prosper among the insects, sharptoothed critters, and serious heat. We meet beekeeper Harold P. Curtis and his prized orange blossom honey; frog whisperer Avalon Theisen; Sheepshead George of St. Petersburg; and Miss Martha, the oystershucking queen of Apalachicola. Klinkenberg also takes us to some of the most interesting, little-known places in the state. We travel to Solomon’s Castle of reclaimed materials, the neighborhood of “Rattlesnake, Florida,” and the smallest post office in the United States. Award-winning writer Jeff Klinkenberg wrote for the Tampa Bay Times for 37 years. He is also the author of Alligators in B-Flat: Improbable Tales from the Files of Real Florida; Pilgrim in the Land of Alligators: More Stories about Real Florida; and Seasons of Real Florida.

f you never had the opportunity to see the Bee Gees in concert, all hope is not lost. The Australian Bee Gees create an uncanny tribute the Bee Gees, in all their different incarnations through the years, at the Excalibur Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. The Australian Bee Gees formed in Melbourne, Australia in 1996, and since then they have played in over 50 countries around the world. Having performed as the Australian Bee Gees for quite a while, David Davis, David Scott, and Wayne Hosking have honed their craft to a T, and are considered the world’s best Bee Gees tribute band. The enthusiastic crowds at the Excalibur’s Thunder Showroom attest to that fact. The multi-media show covers all the favorite Bee Gee tunes as well as some you may not be as familiar with. Band banter in between songs makes the guys even more relatable. David D. performs as Barry Gibb on guitar and lead vocals, bringing that amazing falsetto to life on such tunes as “Night Fever,” “Tragedy,” “Stayin’ Alive,” “To Love Somebody,” and many more. David S. performs as Robin Gibb rendering precisely such tunes as “I Started A Joke,” “Massachusetts,” “I’ve Gotta Get a Message to You,” and “Nights on Broadway.” Although Maurice didn’t sing lead on many Bee Gee tunes, he was a prolific writer along with his brothers for the group. Wayne takes his spot on backup vocals and keyboards. He sings “Islands In The Stream” with Michael in the show. The show band is rounded out with Rick Powell on drums and vocals, and Tony Richards on bass guitar.

Math Trumps Kitchen Table consensus Dear Mark: This is not a question, but an observation about people. I was invited to play with a group of old-timers, mostly retired professors. Some of us play 3-card games. The first time I had a winning 3-card hand (straight) a player with a flush pulled in the chips. When I pointed out that in 3-card, a flush doesn’t beat a straight, and trips don’t beat a straight flush, the response was, “Well, that’s the way we’ve always played it.” Okay, it’s only nickel-dime, so as long as I know the house rules . . .” I was the only member of the math department, although one was a chemist and one a physicist. Any thought? Bill S. Before playing any form of poker, one should familiarize oneself with the hand rankings of the game being played. You just can’t make a smart decision unless you know the value of your hand compared to that of others.

COMEDY CELLAR HAS FIRST LAS VEGAS LOCATION www.comedycellar.com/las-vegas/ Visit the longest-running and most successful comedy club in New York – the Comedy Cellar – without leaving Las Vegas. The Comedy Cellar has opened its new location at Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.

So, Bill, with single-mindedness, let’s focus on what you already know, the math of Three Card Poker. When it comes to this version of poker, you are correct; A Straight beats a Flush, and a Straight Flush thumps Three-of-aKind. The probability of getting a Flush in the game of three-card

poker is 4.9593%, and the number of potential combinations forming that hand is 1096. Whereas for a Straight, the probability is 3.2579%, and the combination possibilities are 720, which makes for the stronger hand. Likewise, Bill, where you noted to fellow players that trips (Threeof-a-Kind) do NOT beat a straight flush, again, you are correct. The differential isn’t as distinct as flush versus a straight, but, the chances of catching a Three-ofa-Kind hand are 0.2353% with 52 possible combinations, whereas, the chances of getting a Straight Flush are 0.2172% and 48 achievable groupings.

www.AccentOnTampaBay.com

What I believe is happening within your group, is that they are confusing the hand rankings of Three Card Poker against that of a Five Card game. In video poker or five-card draw for that matter, Flushes do beat Straights. But, unlike ‘normal’ Poker, a straight is much less likely with three cards and is accordingly ranked higher. The same holds true with a Straight Flush, which is less probable to appear than Trips. Here is a list of Three Card Poker hands from best to worst. The better the position, the stronger the hand: • Straight Flush - Straight of one suit (8-9-10) • Three-of-a-Kind - Three cards of one kind (J-J-J). • Straight - Three cards of sequential rank (4-5-6) • Flush - Three cards of the same suit. (King - 9 - 7 same suit) • Pair - Two cards of the same kind. (10 - 10 – 4) • High Card - If nobody has any of the above then whoever has the highest card wins. Obviously, Bill, you are burdened by the house rules of whoever is gracious enough to let you spill beer and avocado dip all over their carpet. Still, I am sensing something very positive here. Dead money players (patsies) who don’t know the probabilities of the game, over the long run tend to make for easy pickins’.

The Market for Frank Lloyd Wright Designed Objects

C

hief Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) designed private residences, buildings of worship, office buildings, schools and ateliers, urban civic architecture, and even art museums. Wright united the indoors with the outdoors in his buildings. He highlighted landscape vistas, gardens, and waterfalls. His Prairie style structures focused on what he called organic architecture which made his buildings stand out in the realm of 20th Century architectural history. Wright was interested in devising architectural plans that encouraged visitors to make a pilgrimage to the front door of his private homes as is the case with the famous Robie House on the campus of the University of Chicago. He thoughtfully designed stained glass windows to fit within an overall design aesthetic. For instance. Wright’s colorful stained glass windows for the children’s playhouse of the Avery Coonley House in Riverside, IL focused on the family’s active lifestyle with young children. Wright’s buildings made the hearth the center of the home. The nucleus of his residential structures, the fireplace served as a meeting place in Wright’s home designs with ample seating and room for a large roaring fire as is the case in Wright’s ar-

108

chitectural design of the massive hearth in the Darwin D. Martin House in Buffalo, NY. Wright designed all aspects of his buildings which became a mainstay in the history of architecture. It follows that while many of Wright’s buildings have been on the real estate market for high prices, his furnishings and design elements from these houses are captivating to collectors. The market for Wright’s design objects indicate the current interest in architectural salvage, vintage and antique furnishing and accessories. Wright was a highly respected designer from the foundation of his buildings to the furnishings. Wright designed windows in stained and leaded glass, chairs, tables, serving pieces, built in seating spaces www.AccentOnTampaBay.com

and storage areas, textiles, carpets, light fixtures, planters, sculptures, etc. These objects have become of great interest to collectors. Some interesting Wright objects demonstrate the interest in architectural elements as a sector of the antiques market as well as the way collectors are engaged to live among Wrightian objects. Popular Wright objects range from light fixtures and stained-glass windows to lounge chairs and carpet remnants. Here are the top Wright objects that have sold on the market in the last year showing the interest in Frank Lloyd Wright as a designer: • Hanging lamp, John Storer House, Hollywood, CA, 1923, $36,000

• Lounge chair, Clarence Sondern House, Kansas City, MO, 1939, $15,000 • Stained glass window, Lake Geneva Hotel, Lake Geneva, WI, 1911, $10,000 • Stained glass window, Avery Coonley House, Riverside, IL 1908, $8,500 • Leather chair, Francis W. Little House, Wayzata, MN, circa 1906, $4,750 • Standing oak desk, Frank L. Smith Bank, Dwight, IL, 1905, $4,500 • Upholstered bench, Unitarian Meeting House, Madison, WI, 1951, $3,500 • Waste basket, Larkin Building, Buffalo, NY, circa 1906, $2,100 • Bound carpet remnant, Arizona Biltmore, Phoenix, AZ, 1929, $300 • Buffalo Pottery china plate with Larkin Co. logo by Wright, circa 1905, $150 As Wright enthusiasts consider taking on the project of buying and updating a Wright home or building, many lovers of modern architecture are quite satisfied with a planter, waste basket or rug designed by Wright. Today, these architectural elements are become much easier to find and afford. Bucs Bits WILL THE REAL JAMEIS WINSTON RAISE HIS HAND? A few years ago, when the Bucs signed Jameis Winston, I questioned why they did it. I was assured they vetted him every which way from Sunday and they were satisfied that his bad boy behavior as behind him. I still wasn’t convinced. Stealing a soda or some crab cakes is stupid kid stuff but sexual assault is a whole different matter. This was more than childish high jinks. After an “investigation” by his school seemed to clear him of any wrongdoing he continued in school. Jameis seemed to buy into the program and he seemed that he cleaned up his act. I began to think I had misjudged him. Jameis has been doing great things in the community, working with kids at risk, running a football camp and trying to improve education. He started “TheJameis Winston Dream Foundation.“ It is amazing what the Foundation has accomplished in a very short time. He was able to transform a classroom into a new state of the art technology center where kids are working with 3D-printers, robots, and tablets. I saw kids that were so excited to go to school, they were clapping and cheering. It was wonderful to see the impact this program has had on the kids and this was just the beginning. I just hope that the positive impact that the “Dream Room” has had won’t be negated by the latest Jameis drama. I spoke to Jameis a few weeks ago and I suggested that he should consider getting a driver. High profile people are targets. When I worked on political campaigns, we would never, never, never let a candidate drive. I also suggested that he be very careful of the friends that he hung out with. Some of them don’t have your best interest at heart. I guess my advice was a little late. I really hope Jameis has finally gotten the message and he sticks to what he needs to do. So what’s it going to be Jameis? Are you going to stand up and be the person that people hoped for and the person that you have shown you can be or are you going to be just another guy who will fade from the spotlight? It’s all up to you now. Good luck. I hope you make it. IS EVERYONE READY FOR THE BUC’S 2018 SEASON? Training camp starts on July 29th. Things have been humming along since the draft. I’m sure everyone loved all the action at the draft party and getting their first look at the first round pick, Vita Vea. Other teams should be very afraid, he is a very large man! (But he has a great smile.) Let’s hope Vita follows in the steps of the previous first-round defensive tackles, Gerald McCoy, Anthony McFarland and Warren Sapp. Vita comes to Tampa from the University of Washington by way of California. Welcome to Buc’s Land, Vita, and good luck. In addition to Vita, we welcomed back one of our own, Jason Pierre-Paul. Jason played at USF before playing with the New Jersey— sorry—the New York Giants. Welcome back and good luck.

“The Mike Evans Family Foundation“ whose goal is to help kids who don’t have the resources to go to college, kids from low income families that have worked hard to apply to go to school and get in don’t have the money to go. Mike said that if he didn’t have a scholarship he probably wouldn’t be where he is today. Secondly, he wants to help families that suffered from domestic violence because he grew up in that type of environment. He and his wife can relate to both of these so they decided to focus on both. The Foundation started small but they hope to grow so they can help kids and families that need a hand up. They have plans for a lot more things in the near future. They had a very successful golf tournament in May and also gave several scholarships to kids in his local Texas area. Many Bucs, past and present have started foundations and they are making a huge impact on lives. It’s wonderful to see these young men and their families appreciate the blessings they have been given and want to pay it forward.

THE BUCS HAVE BEEN VERY ACTIVE IN THE COMMUNITY. In no particular order, here are some of the things that they have been doing to improve Tampa Bay. “The Cut For The Cure” supports the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation. More than 40 players and staff had their head or beard’s shaved or got their hair colored as is done by patient and survivors of Pediatric Cancer. Over the past 6 years, the Bucs have raised over $315,000 to help the kids. This fundraiser was led by Deno Anagnost, VP of Sales. Deno, a cancer survivor, raised $22,000 on his own this year alone. The Bucs have vowed to raise $100,000. Gerald McCoy donated $30,000. They beat their goal. The Bucs have always had the community’s back, doing anything that needs to be done, never asking for any credit. That Is just the Glazer’s way. The N.P.F. Is headquartered in Tampa and is dedicated to funding research to stamp out childhood cancer. Fans who would like to help can contact http://events.fastercure.org/site/TR?team_ id=1610&fr_id=1140&pg=team The Rookie club is always active. Among other things, they went bowling with Tampa Fire Rescue at Pin Chasers for the 4th year in a row. They visited with children at local hospitals and spent time at McDill, meeting with base personnel. THE MIKE EVANS FAMILY FOUNDATION Mike Evans has started, along with his wife, Ashli,

harleston, the South Carolina port city founded in 1670, is defined by its cobblestone streets, horse-drawn carriages and pastel antebellum houses, particularly in the elegant French Quarter and Battery districts. Shops line Broad street in the French Quarter, which is within the original walled city of Charleston. The Battery promenade and Waterfront Park both overlook Charleston Harbor, while Fort Sumter, a federal stronghold where the first shots of the Civil War rang out, lies across the water.
