Carnival Cruise Line Adds 20 Cruises To Cuba From Tampa Aboard Carnival Paradise In 2019

he new voyages aboard Carnival Paradise are in addition to the 17 recently announced Cuba cruises aboard Carnival Sensation departing from Miami in 2019, indicating that more and more travelers view cruising as a great way to experience the destination. “Our Cuba cruises have been met with phenomenal guest response since we began sailing to the island last year and we’re thrilled to add yet another 20 voyages to this fascinating and sought-after destination,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line. The newly added five-day voyages on Carnival Paradise will depart Tampa on Saturdays and feature a day-long or a full day and overnight call in the Cuban capital of Havana, along with stops at tropical destinations Key West and Cozumel. Carnival Paradise’s new Cuba cruise schedule includes: 10, five-day cruises overnighting in Havana with a visit to Key West – departing March 2, April 13, May 25, June 22, July 6, Aug. 3 and 17, Sept. 14 and 28 and Oct. 26, 2019; Six, five-day voyages featuring a day-long call in Havana and a visit to Cozumel – departure dates include Jan. 5, March 16, May 11, Aug. 31, Nov. 9 and Dec. 7, 2019; Four, five-day sailings featuring day-long calls to Havana, Key West and Cozumel – departing Feb. 16, June 8, July 20 and Oct. 12, 2019. spirt that has earned the enviable honor of being France’s most awarded vodka recently served as a source of intrigue for select members of the Tampa Bay media. A blind tasting held at Mise En Place marked the first in a series of three “Dining in the Dark” events. Offshore Racing: Miss Geico Takes The Checkered Flag... Again Story and photos by Melissa W. Martino

hat’s it like to skim the water in a powerboat at 180 mph? We mere mortals may never know, but the Miss Gieco team does. I had the pleasure of watching the recent 2018 Sarasota Superboat Grand Prix from the security of the Miss Geico team’s support boat. The water was choppy that day, so Ms. G topped out at around 140 mph - still pretty darned fast. At 50-feet long and with 3,300 horsepower driving her, it’s no wonder she takes the checkered flag so often, including ten world championships since 2004. A boat can be amazing, but it’s the expertise of the driver and throttleman that win a race. The driver keeps the boat on course while other boats (a different race going on at the same time) maneuver around him. The throttleman controls the boat’s speed and trim. Miss Geico is helmed by driver James Sheppard and throttleman Steve Curtis, both seasoned winners. The Sarasota race had 3 super boats contending for the flag, which may not sound like a lot of boats, but when you consider there are only about 12 in this class in the country — and only about 24 in the world, it becomes even more impressive. Race lengths vary, but this race was 67 miles on a 4-turn oval for about 25 minutes, with giant buoys marking the turns. The powerboats have poor visibility as windows are small and narrow for safety reasons, so the support team is in constant contact with the racers to let him know what’s happening around them. Ms. G’s support team consists of Gary Stray, Crew Chief; Gary Goodell, Marketing; Scott Colton, Managing Member; and Scotty Begovich, Transportation. Did I mention it was HOT that day? It was 90° with a feels-like of 105°. James and Steve had to don their fire suits and climb into a small spaced enclosed cockpit with no A/C. I did not envy them at that moment, but the exhilaration of taking the checkered flag brought big smiles to their faces after the race was over.

There is another Offshore Racing event coming up in September in Clearwater — the 10th Annual Clearwater SBI championship, Sept 28-30. Let’s see if Miss Geico can continue her winning streak. immy Hula’s “Surf-Shack” themed restaurant is a fresh addition to Northeast St. Petersburg’s dining offerings. Casual and fun with a clear beach vibe, Hula’s has a tasty and interesting menu with clever titles. The cuisine is sort of Mexico meets Hawaii meets the Caribbean. Especially known for their famous fish tacos, they also serve up unique spins on other taco stylings, such as the “Wipeout” with marinated steak, shrimp, fries, jack cheese, avocado, salsa, and baja sauce, and “Johnny Utah” with smoked pork, mac n’ cheese, pickle, bacon, scallion and BBQ sauce. You can veg out with the “Tree Hugger” with black beans, zucchini, mushroom, onion, cotija, and crema. On our recent foray to Hula’s we ordered the Shrimp Po’ Boy sandwich served on a rustic roll, with crispy shrimp, banana pepper, lettuce tomato, and the ever-important “voodoo” sauce. We also sampled the Teriyaki Bowl, with jasmine rice, zucchini, mushrooms, onion, carrots, pineapple and Lava (not sure what the lava is, but the dish was delish.) Appetizers — or rather “Shackatizers” — include such items as Spinach Artichoke Empanadas, Tsunami Shrimp, and Gnarly Nachos. Of course, there are salads, burgers, sides, and a kid-friendly menu as well. Accompanying some great food and contributing to Hula’s vibe is live entertainment on certain nights. We enjoyed vocalist/guitarist Scott Fallon on our recent visit with his renditions of Jimmy Buffet mixed in with some old and new familiar tunes. he Dave Matthews Band’s Summer 2018 tour is in support of their ninth studio LP, Come Tomorrow. DMB is known for playing its songs differently each time they’re performed live. This has become a staple of their live shows and has grown with the band since the early 1990s. In 1994, DMB released their debut studio album, Under the Table and Dreaming, featuring their first commercial hits “What Would You Say” (featuring John Popper of Blues Traveler on harmonica), “Satellite”, and “Ants Marching”. conic vocalist Ann Wilson of Heart is gearing up for a busy summer that will see her performing on the “Stars Align Tour” with Jeff Beck and Paul Rodgers, coming to Tampa on Sunday, August 26 At Midflorida Credit Union Amphitheatre, and prepping the release of her new solo album, Immortal, due out September 14 via BMG . “I am thrilled to have been asked to perform on the ‘Stars Align Tour’ with Jeff Beck and Paul Rodgers,” shares Ann. “They are both long time favorites of mine! They are masters at their craft and it is an honor to share the stage this summer.” For the new release, Ann has teamed with original Heart producer Mike Flicker (“Dreamboat Annie,” “Magazine,” “Little Queen,” “Dog and Butterfly” and “Bebe Le Strange,” among others) for an album that will pay homage to musicians lost in the past few years. Fittingly titled Immortal,, the album features 10 musically diverse tracks that pay homage to some of the singer’s favorite songs and artists, all of whom have passed away in recent years and whose music poignantly lives on. Ann chose the album title Immortal, after revealing some working titles early on in the project. “The original working titles evolved as the concept for the album evolved; a little bit at a time,” explains Ann. “As my understanding of what I had undertaken grew and clarified, I realized a larger truth; that the souls may have departed but the songs will forever be their resonances. These are the poets of our time and their expressions must be handed down. Poetry is lasting and elemental like carvings in rock.” The finely etched tracks that comprise Immortal, cover a lot of musical ground, with many highlights including songs by Leonard Cohen (“A Thousand Kisses Deep”), Amy Winehouse (“Back to Black”), David Bowie (“I’m Afraid of Americans”), Lesley Gore (“You Don’t Own Me”) and Tom Petty (“Luna”). Ann says the criteria for choosing this collection of songs was easy. “First of all, I had to LOVE them! They had to be songs I could get inside of authentically as a singer. Lyrics are important to me but the most important thing is always the marriage of words and melody that makes the song magic!” Fans can expect to hear an assortment of Heart hits along with tracks from her solo career and upcoming album at her show.

3 Ways to Love The Florida Orchestra’s New Season

A CHILD OF OUR TIME (Nov. 9-11): Don’t know it? Understandable. This is the first time TFO will perform Michael Tippett’s oratorio, featuring The Master Chorale of Tampa Bay. What’s to love: Tippett, a pacifist, was inspired by Kristallnacht when he composed the oratorio, so it was a natural choice to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the “Night of Broken Glass” in partnership with the Florida Holocaust Museum. “It’s extraordinary as a dramatic, powerful, brand-new piece for the audience to hear, but it’s also very accessible, beautiful and memorable,” Francis said.

f you’re expecting The Florida Orchestra’s next season to be a letdown after its 50th anniversary celebration, don’t. Music Director Michael Francis has put an enormous amount of thought into programming TFO’s most wide-ranging season yet. “It’s our first chance to show where we’re going as an orchestra in our new era,” he said. Looking beyond the big-name works – Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue – there’s so much more to adore. Here’s the inside scoop on three concerts you’ll fall in love with.

THE PLANETS (Feb. 15-17, 2019): This concert includes a hidden gem that is dear to Michael Francis’ heart: music as a living art form. He and his wife, Cindy, are sponsoring a new work by USF Associate Professor Baljinder Sekhon, as yet unnamed. What’s to love: Francis’ mission is two-pronged: explore the Masterworks in a new light and discover new music, especially Florida talent. “We’re showing that as the third biggest state, we have an incredible artistic voice,” Francis said. BRAHMS’ PIANO CONCERTO NO. 1 (March 29-31, 2019): Even if you’re already a Brahms fan, the rest of this program is more awesome than you realize. What’s to love: First of all, Michael Francis is stoked about working with pianist Benjamin Grosvenor in his TFO debut: “He is one of the great talents of our time.” This concert also features an unusual approach to Arnold Schoenberg’s Transfigured Night, based on the poem by Richard Dehmel. The beautiful piece will be performed mostly in the dark with the poetry on screen. “It will be deeply atmospheric and powerful,” Francis said. This exhibition explores the extraordinary life of renowned music promoter Bill Graham (19311991) who helped launch and promote the careers of countless rock & roll artists. As a promoter and manager, he worked with iconic artists including the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Santana, Fleetwood Mac, the Who, Led Zeppelin, the Doors, and the Rolling Stones. It also traces the indomitable spirit of a man brought to the United States as an eleven-year-old Jewish refugee fleeing the Nazis, fueling a lifelong passion and advocacy for social justice. Treasured photographs and artifacts from Graham’s early life and career will be on loan from the Graham family. An installation of “The Joshua Light Show”- the trailblazing liquid light show conceived in 1967 by multimedia artist Joshua White, which served as a backdrop to many Graham-produced shows - will be customized by White specifically for the exhibition. The Florida Railroad Museum was founded in 1982, and many train cars, cabooses, an ex-fruit growers express refrigerated car, a stainless steel baggage car plus others were donated, purchased and traded. Explore the Surreal Landscape of Dalí’s Mediterranean World

Clyde Butcher Reveals Dalí’s Painted Landscapes as His Own Photographed Dreamscapes Thru Nov 25

urrently at the Dali Museum, Clyde Butcher: Visions of Dalí’s Spain delivers a glimpse into Salvador Dalí’s homeland. The Dalí commissioned Clyde Butcher, the nature photographer known as the “Ansel Adams of the Florida landscape,” to travel to Spain to capture a series of technically brilliant, epically scaled photographs. Throughout his career, Butcher’s photographs have altered people’s perceptions about the Florida environment, and now, will alter the understanding of the surrealist master and the landscape that made him. The Dalí’s new exhibition features 41 original photographs that transport viewers to the striking Catalonian coast, where they are invited to not only appreciate the beauty of Dalí’s beloved environs but also to contemplate the landscapes from an alternate perspective. For this project, Butcher was asked to produce a series of black and white photographs documenting the dramatic splendor of Dalí’s world. “Butcher’s unique abilities to capture the power of light, land and water in black & white deliver spectacular insights into the landscape that had such a profound influence on Dali’s vision and obsessions,” said Hank Hine, Dalí Museum Executive Director. The show is Butcher’s first photographic study

he highly anticipated Toy Story Land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios is now open for playing in! Calling all toys to enter Andy’s backyard! We were lucky enough to shrink down to toy size for the Grand Opening of the park June 30th. We wandered the streets under giant Christmas lights and hovering tinker toys seeking adventure on the new rides based on some of the favorite characters from the Toy Story franchise. The new 11-acre playground is cluttered with toys, not all neatly arranged, but messy — just like a youngster’s toy box would/ should be. Many of the Pixar toys wander the streets for your entertainment. The toy soldiers are our favorite, and they’re pretty darn good drummers, too! Two new fun rides will appeal to kids and adults alike, the Slinky Dog Dash and the Alien Swirling Saucers. The ever-popular Toy Story Mania has been expanded with a third track. Slinky Dog Dash is a smooth coaster that everyone can enjoy, and is fun to watch. CONTINUED

Some really cute items, such as the Slinky Dog headband, little cars from the Alien Saucer ride, a Buzz Lightyear bubble blower, T-shirts, backpacks—just to name a few. The merchandise is sold from large toy trucks at the moment, but I think they may be overwhelmed with customers and have to rethink that.

At night the park takes on a whole different look when the Christmas lights and structures light up. I say “structures” because nothing looks like a “building.” Everything has the appearance of being created out of toy pieces - toy blocks, erector sets, tinker toys. The restrooms are housed in a building block structure with giant Scrabble board pieces. The always amazing Disney Imagineers certainly worked overtime on this park. In speaking to one of them at the Grand Opening of the park, he said the hardest part of creating it was getting the perspective right of the oversized toys being believable. They certainly got it right. Toy Story Land is part of Disney’s Hollywood Studios, so there is no separate charge to enjoy it. ne of only 158 Master Sommeliers in the United States and of only 249 in the entire world, George Miliotes chose to set up shop in Disney Springs with his new venture, Wine Bar George. With this most prestigious title, you might expect a stuffy wine snob, but George is very affable and down-to-earth, and as expected, really knows his stuff. As a matter of fact, Wine Bar George is the only Master Sommelier-led wine bar in Florida. George is not a stranger to the world of Disney as he was part of the California Grill opening at Disneyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Contemporary Resort and managed it until 2002. He also created an award-winning wine list for that restaurant. George makes annual treks to wine-growing regions in Europe and South Africa, keeping relationships with vintners and joining in the winemaking process helping to create custom blends. Wine Bar George has over 130 wines served by the bottle, glass, and ounces. The wine list includes more than 40 varietals from regions around the world, using the Coravin, the Vinfinity system and wine on tap. The wine bar also offers a variety of cocktails, beer, and cider. Wine Bar George is sleek, casual and minimalist, with lots of oak woods and black metal supports, and some wine barrels serving as table stands, all to maximize the effect of the pairing of wine and food.

We had the delightful occasion to experience pairings from the Wine Bar George menu, which leans toward Southern Mediterranean. We started our repast with a charcuterie board selection of artisanal cheeses and crafted meats and condiments. Then came small plates with creations such as Crispy Mac & Cheese Bites with tomato nage and pecorino, House-Made Meatballs with triple cheese polenta and tomato sauce, and Chicken

The paired wines were a Selbach-Oster Bomer Zeltinger Schlossberg, Mosel, Germany ‘16 (a lovely Riesling which can be found only at Wine Bar George in Florida) and a Foillard Côte du Py Morgon, France ‘16 (a very seductive Beaujolais.) Dessert arrived in the form of a perfect Florida favorite — Key Lime pie, and a very unique Olive Oil Cake with candied olives and lemon mascarpone.

Casino Gaming Scene Tampa SEMINOLE HARD ROCK HOTEL & CASINO TAMPA UNDERGOING $700 MILLION EXPANSION. The Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tampa has embarked on a nearly $700 million expansion with 5,000 slot machines and almost 200 gaming tables. Slated for completion in mid-2019, the expanded casino will offer one of the largest varieties of slot machines in the nation and will offer guests approximately 200,000 sq. ft. of entertainment and gaming. The Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood is undergoing a simultaneous expansion and renovation.

In Tampa, the Tribeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s economic investment means there will be close to an additional 1,000

Economic analysts point to another 1,022 indirect permanent jobs generated by the casino expansion, plus another 2,268 indirect construction jobs, for a grand total of more than 6,000 additional jobs. The centerpiece of the expansion is a new 15-story hotel tower with an additional 564 hotel rooms and suites. In total, the expanded Seminole Hard Rock Hotel will offer approximately 800 guestrooms, including 79 new hotel suites for a new total of 88 suites. The top floor of the new hotel tower will feature a private gaming parlor for VIP guests, with an exclusive check in and private elevators to rock star suites. Hotel guests will have access to three new outdoor swimming pools. A new 25,000 sq. ft. Rock Spa & Salon will also open on the second level of the hotel tower and will offer pool-side services. A new 200-seat Italian restaurant will be the third fine dining restaurant the property will offer. Additional renovations and updates are planned for the existing Hard Rock Cafe, Fresh Harvest Buffet, Plum VIP Lounge and Food Court. Rise Kitchen & Bakery will be redesigned and relocated as part of the casino expansion project. The property will also elevate their music and entertainment programming with a 30,000-sq. ft. Lady luck smiles over the short run Dear Mark: I am a dedicated blackjack player and follow basic strategy. For years, I have preferred playing one and two deck games (on Fremont St), but lately, I find I do better with the six and eight deck shoes. My question is, do the odds and basic strategy change when the number of decks changes? Bob N. Concerning, Bob, you doing better at multiple deck games, your gaming timeline has been relatively short, and, for now, at least, the Gambling Gods have looked favorably on your play. Winning as you have, Bob, is just a temporary loan from Lady Luck. It is always to your advantage to play on a game that offers the fewest decks. Compared to the single-deck game, your two-deck game handicaps your play 0.35%, but as you climb the ladder to four decks, the handicap clambers up to 0.48%, at six decks, it’s 0.54% and at eight decks, it is 0.58%. Note however that even though the house edge goes up considerably when you go from one

The El Cortez (600 E. Fremont St.) is probably the best place to play blackjack in the Downtown area. They still spread a singledeck blackjack game that still offers the ideal 3-2 odds on a blackjack. That game has a house edge of about .3%, while a double-deck game there comes with a .45% edge. Both games can be played for $5 on weekdays, $10 on weekends. Sure, there are other decent blackjack games in Vegas, but you are looking at games with a $25 minimum. And you not going to bring Vegas to its knees at $5 a pop. ‑‑What I like best about the El Cortez is that almost all the games are a single deck with 3-2 for snapper, and one of my favorite rules, doubling on any two cards. The double deck game allows doubling before and after splits. Be aware, Bob, that they DO sweat the money at the El Cortez. If you use any spread betting, plan on being backed off the game.

t’s wedding season again. Summer weddings all their glory usher in brides in white dresses, towering cakes, and flowers galore. No matter the couple, there are some mainstays when it comes to weddings such as designer dresses and heirloom jewelry. DRESS UP You know the designers’ names: Vivienne Westwood, Marchesa, Randi Rahm, Rivini, Vera Wang, etc. Brides in 2018 are looking forward in their dress selections. Today’s brides are choosing daring dress designs complete with wedding gowns in basic black and eye-popping red. Floral prints, sequins and over-the-top applique work are all the rage replacing traditional white dresses covered in pearls and lace. And for the very daring bride, she’ll be wearing pants or even short-shorts down the aisle instead of a ball gown. Bucs Bits WILL THE REAL JAMEIS WINSTON RAISE HIS HAND? A few years ago, when the Bucs signed Jameis Winston, I questioned why they did it. I was assured they vetted him every which way from Sunday and they were satisfied that his bad boy behavior as behind him. I still wasn’t convinced. Stealing a soda or some crab cakes is stupid kid stuff but sexual assault is a whole different matter. This was more than childish high jinks. After an “investigation” by his school seemed to clear him of any wrongdoing he continued in school. Jameis seemed to buy into the program and he seemed that he cleaned up his act. I began to think I had misjudged him. Jameis has been doing great things in the community, working with kids at risk, running a football camp and trying to improve education. He started “TheJameis Winston Dream Foundation.“ It is amazing what the Foundation has accomplished in a very short time. He was able to transform a classroom into a new state of the art technology center where kids are working with 3D-printers, robots, and tablets. I saw kids that were so excited to go to school, they were clapping and cheering. It was wonderful to see the impact this program has had on the kids and this was just the beginning. I just hope that the positive impact that the “Dream Room” has had won’t be negated by the latest Jameis drama. I spoke to Jameis a few weeks ago and I suggested that he should consider getting a driver. High profile people are targets. When I worked on political campaigns, we would never, never, never let a candidate drive. I also suggested that he be very careful of the friends that he hung out with. Some of them don’t have your best interest at heart. I guess my advice was a little late. I really hope Jameis has finally gotten the message and he sticks to what he needs to do. So what’s it going to be Jameis? Are you going to stand up and be the person that people hoped for and the person that you have shown you can be or are you going to be just another guy who will fade from the spotlight? Things have been humming along since the draft. I’m sure everyone loved all the action at the draft party and getting their first look at the first round pick, Vita Vea. Other teams should be very afraid, he is a very large man! (But he has a great smile.) Let’s hope Vita follows in the steps of the previous first-round defensive tackles, Gerald McCoy, Anthony McFarland and Warren Sapp. Vita comes to Tampa from the University of Washington by way of California. “The Mike Evans Family Foundation“ whose goal is to help kids who don’t have the resources to go to college, kids from low income families that have worked hard to apply to go to school and get in don’t have the money to go. Mike said that if he didn’t have a scholarship he probably wouldn’t be where he is today. Secondly, he wants to help families that suffered from domestic violence because he grew up in that type of environment. He and his wife can relate to both of these so they decided to focus on both. The Foundation started small but they hope to grow so they can help kids and families that need a hand up. They have plans for a lot more things in the near future. They had a very successful golf tournament in May and also gave several scholarships to kids in his local Texas area. Many Bucs, past and present have started foundations and they are making a huge impact on lives. It’s wonderful to see these young men and their families appreciate the blessings they have been given and want to pay it forward.

THE BUCS HAVE BEEN VERY ACTIVE IN THE COMMUNITY. In no particular order, here are some of the things that they have been doing to improve Tampa Bay. “The Cut For The Cure” supports the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation. More than 40 players and staff had their head or beard’s shaved or got their hair colored as is done by patient and survivors of Pediatric Cancer. Over the past 6 years, the Bucs have raised over $315,000 to help the kids. This fundraiser was led by Deno Anagnost, VP of Sales. Deno, a cancer survivor, raised $22,000 on his own this year alone. The Bucs have vowed to raise $100,000. Gerald McCoy donated $30,000. They beat their goal. The Bucs have always had the community’s back, doing anything that needs to be done, never asking for any credit. That Is just the Glazer’s way. The N.P.F. Is headquartered in Tampa and is dedicated to funding research to stamp out childhood cancer.
