A Well Planned Surprise is the Pinnacle of Success
By Mary Lou Janson
A
spirt that has earned the enviable honor of being France’s most awarded vodka recently served as a source of intrigue for select members of the Tampa Bay media. A blind tasting held at Mise En Place marked the first in a series of three “Dining in the Dark” events. Ro Patel, Tampa Bay’s expert mixologist and creative force behind many of the area’s most innovative bar programs, served as the tasting tour guide and the brand’s “Pinnacle Personality” ambassador. He artfully dodged direct questions, offering only hints as to the brand’s true identity. Guests were given cocktails concocted to pair perfectly with the evening’s threecourse meal. After a refreshing welcome beverage made with the featured vodka and lemonade, a neat pour of the beverage helped prime tastebuds for the pairings ahead. The versatility of the vodka was as clear as its color. It is a perfect sipping vodka when served solo, sans any other ingredients. And it worked really well with such diverse accompaniments as the brine mixed into the martini and the orange marmalade added to the French Floridian. At the end of the meal, the big reveal was finally made. Pinnacle® Original Vodka proved to be the secret spirit that had kept the group sipping and smiling throughout the tasting. What makes this vodka stand out from its counterparts can be traced to the way it is made. It starts with 100 percent whole-grain wheat from Northern France which boasts the perfect blend of rich soil, limestone and clay. Next comes pure spring water from the Charente region that filters through the limestone. Finally, it is distilled five times in its home in the heart of France’s Cognac region. The results are the signature clarity, clean taste and smooth flavors associated with Pinnacle. Considering the premium ingredients and meticulous process that goes into producing this vodka, it is no wonder that Pinnacle Original has won 19 awards for quality and taste since 2013. Among its honors are the following: 92 Points Great Value Award at the 2018 Ultimate Spirits Competition, Gold 93 Points Best Buy at the 2017 Beverage Testing Institute Competition, and Gold Medal, 2015: SIP Award, Consumer Choice Competition. “We believe that when you start with exceptional ingredients, an exceptional product follows,” according to the brand’s press information. “”We use quality stills and every bit of our distillers’ energy, passion and expertise to create the most awarded French Vodka.” Where to purchase it: ABC Fine Liquors, Alpine Liquors, Alama Liquor or Carrollwood Fine Wine & Spirits within the Tampa Bay area. Offshore Racing: Miss Geico Takes The Checkered Flag... Again Story and photos by Melissa W. Martino
W
hat’s it like to skim the water in a powerboat at 180 mph? We mere mortals may never know, but the Miss Gieco team does. I had the pleasure of watching the recent 2018 Sarasota Superboat Grand Prix from the security of the Miss Geico team’s support boat. The water was choppy that day, so Ms. G topped out at around 140 mph - still pretty darned fast. At 50-feet long and with 3,300 horsepower driving her, it’s no wonder she takes the checkered flag so often, including ten world championships since 2004. A boat can be amazing, but it’s the expertise of the driver and throttleman that win a race. The driver keeps the boat on course while other boats (a different race going on at the same time) maneuver around him. The throttleman controls the boat’s speed and trim. Miss Geico is helmed by driver James Sheppard and throttleman Steve Curtis, both seasoned winners. The Sarasota race had 3 super boats contending for the flag, which may not sound like a lot of boats, but when you consider there are only about 12 in this class in the country — and only about 24 in the world, it becomes even more impressive. Race lengths vary, but this race was 67 miles on a 4-turn oval for about 25 minutes, with giant buoys marking the turns. The powerboats have poor visibility as windows are small and narrow for safety reasons, so the support team is in constant contact with the racers to let him know what’s happening around them. Ms. G’s support team consists of Gary Stray, Crew Chief; Gary Goodell, Marketing; Scott Colton, Managing Member; and Scotty Begovich, Transportation. Did I mention it was HOT that day? It was 90° with a feels-like of 105°. James and Steve had to don their fire suits and climb into a small spaced enclosed cockpit with no A/C. I did not envy them at that moment, but the exhilaration of taking the checkered flag brought big smiles to their faces after the race was over.
There is another Offshore Racing event coming up in September in Clearwater — the 10th Annual Clearwater SBI championship, Sept 28-30. Let’s see if Miss Geico can continue her winning streak. For more information on the Clearwater race, please visit www.clearwatersuperboat.com For more information on Miss Geico, please visit www.missgeicoracing.com 16

immy Hula’s “Surf-Shack” themed restaurant is a fresh addition to Northeast St. Petersburg’s dining offerings. Casual and fun with a clear beach vibe, Hula’s has a tasty and interesting menu with clever titles. The cuisine is sort of Mexico meets Hawaii meets the Caribbean. Especially known for their famous fish tacos, they also serve up unique spins on other taco stylings, such as the “Wipeout” with marinated steak, shrimp, fries, jack cheese, avocado, salsa, and baja sauce, and “Johnny Utah” with smoked pork, mac n’ cheese, pickle, bacon, scallion and BBQ sauce. You can veg out with the “Tree Hugger” with black beans, zucchini, mushroom, onion, cotija, and crema. On our recent foray to Hula’s we ordered the Shrimp Po’ Boy sandwich served on a rustic roll, with crispy shrimp, banana pepper, lettuce tomato, and the ever-important “voodoo” sauce. We also sampled the Teriyaki Bowl, with jasmine rice, zucchini, mushrooms, onion, carrots, pineapple and Lava (not sure what the lava is, but the dish was delish.) Appetizers — or rather “Shackatizers” — include such items as Spinach Artichoke Empanadas, Tsunami Shrimp, and Gnarly Nachos. Of course, there are salads, burgers, sides, and a kid-friendly menu as well. Accompanying some great food and contributing to Hula’s vibe is live entertainment on certain nights. We enjoyed vocalist/guitarist Scott Fallon on our recent visit with his renditions of Jimmy Buffet mixed in with some old and new familiar tunes. Jimmy Hula’s is located at 8123 4th Street No, St. Petersburg, FL. For more information, please call 727-202-7383 or visit the website at: www.jimmyhulas.com

DON MCLEAN Botanical Gardens
otanical Gardens is McLean’s 19th studio album, and first in 8 years. Intimacy can be found at the heart of this record, with Don penning personal numbers looking back on life, as well as his observations on youth and love. The inspiration for the project started years ago when he would walk in the beautiful gardens in Sydney, Australia near the Opera House. He would dream young dreams and find comfort and inspiration. The result is a raw, yet tight sound. In nearly 50 years, Don’s songs have become an iconic staple of American music. His biggest hit, “American Pie,” was recently recognized with high honors by BMI for achieving five (5) MillionAir certified airplay awards, along with “Vincent (Starry, Starry Night)” achieving three (3) Million-Air certified airplay awards. www.don-mclean.com.com
MIKE JONES & PENN JILLETTE The Show Before the Show
O
n this album piano master Mike Jones is joined by bassist Penn Jillette, the verbal half of the renowned magic duo Penn & Teller. Jones is the musical director for Penn & Teller’s Las Vegas show playing both before the show begins and during the act. Jazzy renditions of standards make up the bulk of album, including such tunes as “Broadway,” “Have You Met Miss Jones,” and “There is No Greater Love.” Jillette grounds the music with apt playing, even providing some snappy solos. Let’s face it — it’s magical. www.jonesjazz.com/

malgamating 20th-century Brazilian sounds with Chicago jazz and funk, singer Alexandra Jackson proves to be a sensitive, soulful vocalist well up to the task. The album pays homage to samba while mixing jazz, blues, soul, and bossa nova. She is supported by some of the most significant musicians in the genre. The mammoth project — bringing Brazilian music to mainstream — resulted in 23 tracks with more than 35 contributing artists in featured roles, and 100 musicians and engineers overall. www.AlexandraJMusic.com 34

THE OAK RIDGE BOYS 17th Avenue Revival
1
7th Avenue Revival brings Country Music Hall of Famers The Oak Ridge Boys back to their gospel roots, but with an edge. The vision was with a different kind of gospel — one that took a hard look at the early days of rock and roll, which was influenced by spiritual, or black gospel. The result is somewhat retro, yet new and fresh at the same time. The album was recorded at Nashville’s legendary RCA Studio A. For several of the songs, the Boys gathered around one microphone and let the harmonies shine. www.oakridgeboys.com
OWEN BRODER Heritage: the American Roots Project
O
n Heritage, Owen Broder combines several of modern jazz’s most acclaimed composers and arrangers with an outstanding ensemble of musicians to meld modern jazz with traditional forms like Appalachian folk, early blues, spirituals, and bluegrass. Broder’s project interprets these pieces through the voices of an eight-piece ensemble featuing Broder on woodwinds, and proves to be bold and inspirational. A standout track, “Goin’ Up Home,” builds in complexity, layering in jazz harmonies and infectious swing rhythms. www.owenbroder.com

N
orth Caroina-based Sengalese kora master Diali Cissokho took his American bandmates to his hometown of M’bour to record this album. The band took their tracks back to North Carolina to weave in some gospel vocals and strings, resulting in a range from high-energy dance floor-friendly cuts to intimate and comtemplatice pieces. Diali’s storytelling and musical prowess give direction to Kaira Ba’s players carving new paths across the Atlantic. The album opens with cicadas in N.C., but by the end with “Night in M’bour” you are transported to Senegal. www.kairabamusic.com

T
aylor Swift is a superstar who managed to completely cross over from country to the mainstream. She has shown that she is perhaps the sharpest, savviest populist singer/songwriter of her generation. These skills were evident on her earliest hits, but her 2nd album, 2008’s Fearless, showcased a songwriter discovering who she was. Fearless was certified gold in its first week of release, and the record gained momentum throughout 2009, earning several platinum certifications as “Love Story,” “White Horse,” “You Belong with Me,” “Fifteen,” and “Fearless” all scaled the upper reaches of the country charts. Speak Now, delivered in 2010, consolidated her success and she moved into the stratosphere of superstardom. On Speak Now, Swift turned toward following a pop path on her fourth album, hiring such mainstream musicians as Dan Wilson, Butch Walker, and Britney Spears producer Max Martin. “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” was the first single from Red, which shattered expectations by selling over a million copies in its first week. She supported Red with an international tour in 2013 and more hits came, including “I Knew You Were Trouble” and “22.” In 2014, 1989 was designed as her first “official” pop album. “Shake It Off” hit number one upon its August 2014 release. When 1989 appeared in October 2014, it shot to number one and became her third straight album to sell one million copies in its first week (a new record for any artist). Swift gathered many awards during the subsequent year, including Billboard’s Woman of the Year, the Award for Excellence at the American Music Awards, and a special 50th Anniversary Milestone Award from the CMAs. Her 1989 World Tour crossed Asia, North America, and Europe during the last half of 2015, and she won three Grammy Awards at the 2016 ceremonies, including Album of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Album, and Best Music Video for “Bad Blood.” Swift returned with her sixth album, Reputation, in November 2017.

he Dave Matthews Band’s Summer 2018 tour is in support of their ninth studio LP, Come Tomorrow. DMB is known for playing its songs differently each time they’re performed live. This has become a staple of their live shows and has grown with the band since the early 1990s. In 1994, DMB released their debut studio album, Under the Table and Dreaming, featuring their first commercial hits “What Would You Say” (featuring John Popper of Blues Traveler on harmonica), “Satellite”, and “Ants Marching”. Its follow-up album, Crash brought the band national attention, culminating in a Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal for “So Much to Say” as well as four other nominations between the years 1996 and 1997. The band also achieved hits with “Crash into Me”, “Too Much”, and “Tripping Billies”. By 1997, DMB reached unparalleled levels of popularity across the United States and, to some degree, the world. The 2001 release of Everyday was a huge commercial success. The singles “I Did It”, “Everyday”, and “The Space Between”, brought the band an even larger level of popularity. The group’s 2009 album Big Whiskey & the GrooGrux King, debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, earning them their fifth consecutive number-one debut. By 2010, the Dave Matthews Band had sold over 50 million records worldwide. Their album, 2012’s Away from the World, debuted at number one on the Billboard chart, making Dave Matthews Band the first group to have six consecutive studio albums debut in the top spot. DMB has a new studio album coming out this summer.

with JEFF BECK and PAUL RODGERS in the Stars Align Tour
conic vocalist Ann Wilson of Heart is gearing up for a busy summer that will see her performing on the “Stars Align Tour” with Jeff Beck and Paul Rodgers, coming to Tampa on Sunday, August 26 At Midflorida Credit Union Amphitheatre, and prepping the release of her new solo album, Immortal, due out September 14 via BMG . “I am thrilled to have been asked to perform on the ‘Stars Align Tour’ with Jeff Beck and Paul Rodgers,” shares Ann. “They are both long time favorites of mine! They are masters at their craft and it is an honor to share the stage this summer.” For the new release, Ann has teamed with original Heart producer Mike Flicker (“Dreamboat Annie,” “Magazine,” “Little Queen,” “Dog and Butterfly” and “Bebe Le Strange,” among others) for an album that will pay homage to musicians lost in the past few years. Fittingly titled Immortal,, the album features 10 musically diverse tracks that pay homage to some of the singer’s favorite songs and artists, all of whom have passed away in recent years and whose music poignantly lives on. Ann chose the album title Immortal, after revealing some working titles early on in the project. “The original working titles evolved as the concept for the album evolved; a little bit at a time,” explains Ann. “As my understanding of what I had undertaken grew and clarified, I realized a larger truth; that the souls may have departed but the songs will forever be their resonances. These are the poets of our time and their expressions must be handed down. Poetry is lasting and elemental like carvings in rock.” The finely etched tracks that comprise Immortal, cover a lot of musical ground, with many highlights including songs by Leonard Cohen (“A Thousand Kisses Deep”), Amy Winehouse (“Back to Black”), David Bowie (“I’m Afraid of Americans”), Lesley Gore (“You Don’t Own Me”) and Tom Petty (“Luna”). Ann says the criteria for choosing this collection of songs was easy. “First of all, I had to LOVE them! They had to be songs I could get inside of authentically as a singer. Lyrics are important to me but the most important thing is always the marriage of words and melody that makes the song magic!” Fans can expect to hear an assortment of Heart hits along with tracks from her solo career and upcoming album at her show.

ES is celebrating their 50th Anniversary with a new album and a tour that will bring them to the Tampa Bay area. The iconic group will make a stop at the CAPITOL THEATRE in Clearwater on THURSDAY, JULY 26, and thrill their audience with tunes from #YES50: Celebrating 50 Years of YES.
YES is, of course, one of the biggest bands in prog rock history and true pioneers of the genre. Founding member/Grammy winner/Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee Tony Kaye (keyboards; 1968-1971 and 19831995) will join Steve Howe (guitar since 1970), Alan White (drums since 1972), Geoff Downes (keyboards; first joined in 1980), Jon Davison (vocals since 2011) and Billy Sherwood (guitar/keyboards in the 1990s and the late Chris Squire’s choice to take over bass/vocals in 2015) for this summer’s tour as a special guest. Founded in 1968 by the late Chris Squire and Jon Anderson, Grammy-award winning recording artists YES has created some of the most important and influential music in rock history, such as iconic pieces “Roundabout,” “Close to the Edge,” “I’ve Seen All Good People,” “Owner of a Lonely Heart,” “Starship Trooper,” and countless others. The band’s albums, including Fragile, Close to the Edge, Tales from Topographic Oceans, Relayer, Going For the One and 90125, have been certified multi-platinum, doubleplatinum, platinum, and more by the RIAA, and have sold over 50 million records total during the band’s long and successful career that has so far spanned over five decades. Among the world’s most influential, ground-breaking, and respected progressive rock bands, YES continues creating masterful music that inspires musicians, fans and music lovers around the world.

NOTES FROM THE BAND: “Much has changed since I joined Yes in 1970, but the core elements of the band have remained consistent,” shares guitarist Steve Howe. “We want to mark this anniversary with a tour that encompasses some of our best-loved work and revisit a few classic pieces that have been lost for a while. We look forward to sharing the 50th anniversary with the fanbase, playing classic songs that celebrate the broad musical style of Yes.” “I have been blessed to be a member of this amazing band’s rhythm section for the past 46 years, mostly in the company of my great friend Chris Squire, and latterly alongside Chris’ chosen successor, Billy Sherwood, who is receiving recognition for stepping into Chris’ pre-eminent bass and vocals,” says drummer Alan White. “Each
night we are pausing to reflect on Chris’ importance to Yes, his desire that we should continue to share Yes music on stages worldwide, and the specific dedication of ‘Onward’ to his huge memory. I’m so grateful to continue to be performing on stages for our dedicated fans and look forward to celebrating our 50th Anniversary in America. It has been a great ride!” “Being a member of the band during its 50th anniversary is a privilege and honor,” adds Geoff Downes (keys). “It is awe-inspiring to reflect on the caliber and invention of the musicians who have forged the legacy of Yes since 1968, always pushing the boundaries. Playing on stage with founder member Tony Kaye to launch the 50th anniversary [on this year’s Cruise to the Edge] was a wonderful experience for the band and our fans, to whom we dedicate this special tour.”

3 Ways to Love The Florida Orchestra’s New Season
A CHILD OF OUR TIME (Nov. 9-11): Don’t know it? Understandable. This is the first time TFO will perform Michael Tippett’s oratorio, featuring The Master Chorale of Tampa Bay. What’s to love: Tippett, a pacifist, was inspired by Kristallnacht when he composed the oratorio, so it was a natural choice to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the “Night of Broken Glass” in partnership with the Florida Holocaust Museum. “It’s extraordinary as a dramatic, powerful, brand-new piece for the audience to hear, but it’s also very accessible, beautiful and memorable,” Francis said.
Michael Francis

f you’re expecting The Florida Orchestra’s next season to be a letdown after its 50th anniversary celebration, don’t. Music Director Michael Francis has put an enormous amount of thought into programming TFO’s most wide-ranging season yet. “It’s our first chance to show where we’re going as an orchestra in our new era,” he said. Looking beyond the big-name works – Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue – there’s so much more to adore. Here’s the inside scoop on three concerts you’ll fall in love with.
THE PLANETS (Feb. 15-17, 2019): This concert includes a hidden gem that is dear to Michael Francis’ heart: music as a living art form. He and his wife, Cindy, are sponsoring a new work by USF Associate Professor Baljinder Sekhon, as yet unnamed. What’s to love: Francis’ mission is two-pronged: explore the Masterworks in a new light and discover new music, especially Florida talent. “We’re showing that as the third biggest state, we have an incredible artistic voice,” Francis said. BRAHMS’ PIANO CONCERTO NO. 1 (March 29-31, 2019): Even if you’re already a Brahms fan, the rest of this program is more awesome than you realize. What’s to love: First of all, Michael Francis is stoked about working with pianist Benjamin Grosvenor in his TFO debut: “He is one of the great talents of our time.” This concert also features an unusual approach to Arnold Schoenberg’s Transfigured Night, based on the poem by Richard Dehmel. The beautiful piece will be performed mostly in the dark with the poetry on screen. “It will be deeply atmospheric and powerful,” Francis said. The Florida Orchestra: Performs regularly at the Straz Center in Tampa, Mahaffey in St. Petersburg and Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater. Concert series are on sale now at floridaorchestra.org or 727.892.3337 and 1.800.662.7286. Single tickets go on sale Aug. 13. www.AccentOnTampaBay.com

Clyde Butcher Reveals Dalí’s Painted Landscapes as His Own Photographed Dreamscapes Thru Nov 25
urrently at the Dali Museum, Clyde Butcher: Visions of Dalí’s Spain delivers a glimpse into Salvador Dalí’s homeland. The Dalí commissioned Clyde Butcher, the nature photographer known as the “Ansel Adams of the Florida landscape,” to travel to Spain to capture a series of technically brilliant, epically scaled photographs. Throughout his career, Butcher’s photographs have altered people’s perceptions about the Florida environment, and now, will alter the understanding of the surrealist master and the landscape that made him. The Dalí’s new exhibition features 41 original photographs that transport viewers to the striking Catalonian coast, where they are invited to not only appreciate the beauty of Dalí’s beloved environs but also to contemplate the landscapes from an alternate perspective. For this project, Butcher was asked to produce a series of black and white photographs documenting the dramatic splendor of Dalí’s world. “Butcher’s unique abilities to capture the power of light, land and water in black & white deliver spectacular insights into the landscape that had such a profound influence on Dali’s vision and obsessions,” said Hank Hine, Dalí Museum Executive Director. The show is Butcher’s first photographic study
Port Lligat House of Spain. He captured the sublime beauty of Dalí’s Mediterranean world in exquisite detail through large scale, super-sharp monochromatic images. “Butcher did an incredible job of capturing the essence of this land that created Dalí,” said Peter Tush, Dalí Museum Curator of Education and exhibit curator. “The series of photographs displayed in the exhibition truly takes the viewer on an epic journey. “ Butcher himself will host book signings at The Dalí on Sept 29, and Nov 3. Visitors can also join Tush for a “Butcher + Dalí” Coffee with a Curator session on Tues, July 3. The exhibit runs through Nov 25. For more information and events details visit www.thedali.org.

T
he highly anticipated Toy Story Land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios is now open for playing in! Calling all toys to enter Andy’s backyard! We were lucky enough to shrink down to toy size for the Grand Opening of the park June 30th. We wandered the streets under giant Christmas lights and hovering tinker toys seeking adventure on the new rides based on some of the favorite characters from the Toy Story franchise. The new 11-acre playground is cluttered with toys, not all neatly arranged, but messy — just like a youngster’s toy box would/ should be. Many of the Pixar toys wander the streets for your entertainment. The toy soldiers are our favorite, and they’re pretty darn good drummers, too! Two new fun rides will appeal to kids and adults alike, the Slinky Dog Dash and the Alien Swirling Saucers. The ever-popular Toy Story Mania has been expanded with a third track. Slinky Dog Dash is a smooth coaster that everyone can enjoy, and is fun to watch. CONTINUED

When it’s time to eat, Woody’s Lunch Box has kid-friendly food (and we’re all kids in Andy’s Backyard.) Enjoy grilled sandwiches, ice-cream floats, grown-up drinks and desserts. The restaurant’s walk-up windows are housed in—you guessed it—a lunch box!

L
ots of fun new merchandise has been created for Toy Story Land. Some really cute items, such as the Slinky Dog headband, little cars from the Alien Saucer ride, a Buzz Lightyear bubble blower, T-shirts, backpacks—just to name a few. The merchandise is sold from large toy trucks at the moment, but I think they may be overwhelmed with customers and have to rethink that.
At night the park takes on a whole different look when the Christmas lights and structures light up. I say “structures” because nothing looks like a “building.” Everything has the appearance of being created out of toy pieces - toy blocks, erector sets, tinker toys. The restrooms are housed in a building block structure with giant Scrabble board pieces. The always amazing Disney Imagineers certainly worked overtime on this park. In speaking to one of them at the Grand Opening of the park, he said the hardest part of creating it was getting the perspective right of the oversized toys being believable. They certainly got it right. Toy Story Land is part of Disney’s Hollywood Studios, so there is no separate charge to enjoy it. O
ne of only 158 Master Sommeliers in the United States and of only 249 in the entire world, George Miliotes chose to set up shop in Disney Springs with his new venture, Wine Bar George. With this most prestigious title, you might expect a stuffy wine snob, but George is very affable and down-to-earth, and as expected, really knows his stuff. As a matter of fact, Wine Bar George is the only Master Sommelier-led wine bar in Florida. George is not a stranger to the world of Disney as he was part of the California Grill opening at Disney’s Contemporary Resort and managed it until 2002. He also created an award-winning wine list for that restaurant. George makes annual treks to wine-growing regions in Europe and South Africa, keeping relationships with vintners and joining in the winemaking process helping to create custom blends. Wine Bar George has over 130 wines served by the bottle, glass, and ounces. The wine list includes more than 40 varietals from regions around the world, using the Coravin, the Vinfinity system and wine on tap. The wine bar also offers a variety of cocktails, beer, and cider. Wine Bar George is sleek, casual and minimalist, with lots of oak woods and black metal supports, and some wine barrels serving as table stands, all to maximize the effect of the pairing of wine and food.
E
xecutive Chef Ron Rupert is supplying the tasty foods that are perfectly paired with various wines. Ron is also an alumnus of the California Grill, so the two are seasoned associates. We had the delightful occasion to experience pairings from the Wine Bar George menu, which leans toward Southern Mediterranean. We started our repast with a charcuterie board selection of artisanal cheeses and crafted meats and condiments. Then came small plates with creations such as Crispy Mac & Cheese Bites with tomato nage and pecorino, House-Made Meatballs with triple cheese polenta and tomato sauce, and Chicken

Family Style plates followed with Skirt Steak Chimichurri with roasted potatoes, a Grilled Whole Greek Sea Bass with cannellini bean ragout, and a Wine Braised Chicken with mushrooms and Yukon potato hash. PHIL GERNHARD Record Man by Bill DeYoung
P
hil Gernhard, Record Man is the story of a self-made music mogul who created nearly fifty years’ worth of chart-topping songs. From a tiny office and studio in Florida, he co-wrote the Royal Guardsmen’s “Snoopy vs. the Red Baron,” America’s fastest-selling single of 1966. He revived the career of singer Dion DiMucci with the ballad “Abraham, Martin and John”—a million seller. He discovered and produced hit records for Lobo, Jim Stafford, and the Bellamy Brothers. Through a long collaboration with music business icon Mike Curb, he launched to fame many others, including country superstars Tim McGraw and Rodney Atkins. In Nashville and Los Angeles, Phil Gernhard was a legend.
Bill DeYoung is the author of Skyway: The True Story of Tampa Bay’s Signature Bridge and the Man Who Brought It Down. eff Klinkenberg has explored what makes Florida unique for nearly half a century, and Son of Real Florida is a compelling retrospective of essays on the state he knows so well. Klinkenberg recounts what it was like to grow up in pre-air conditioning Florida and how he became a newspaper reporter in mid-century Miami. He introduces us to the stout-hearted folks who have learned to live and even prosper among the insects, sharptoothed critters, and serious heat. We meet beekeeper Harold P. Curtis and his prized orange blossom honey; frog whisperer Avalon Theisen; Sheepshead George of St. Petersburg; and Miss Martha, the oystershucking queen of Apalachicola. Klinkenberg also takes us to some of the most interesting, little-known places in the state. We travel to Solomon’s Castle of reclaimed materials, the neighborhood of “Rattlesnake, Florida,” and the smallest post office in the United States. Award-winning writer Jeff Klinkenberg wrote for the Tampa Bay Times for 37 years. He is also the author of Alligators in B-Flat: Improbable Tales from the Files of Real Florida; Pilgrim in the Land of Alligators: More Stories about Real Florida; and Seasons of Real Florida.

Lady luck smiles over the short run Dear Mark: I am a dedicated blackjack player and follow basic strategy. For years, I have preferred playing one and two deck games (on Fremont St), but lately, I find I do better with the six and eight deck shoes. My question is, do the odds and basic strategy change when the number of decks changes? Bob N. Concerning, Bob, you doing better at multiple deck games, your gaming timeline has been relatively short, and, for now, at least, the Gambling Gods have looked favorably on your play. Winning as you have, Bob, is just a temporary loan from Lady Luck. It is always to your advantage to play on a game that offers the fewest decks. Compared to the single-deck game, your two-deck game handicaps your play 0.35%, but as you climb the ladder to four decks, the handicap clambers up to 0.48%, at six decks, it’s 0.54% and at eight decks, it is 0.58%. Note however that even though the house edge goes up considerably when you go from one

deck to two, the rate of increase becomes less dramatic as you add more decks. To truly get a good deal when playing blackjack as a basic strategy player, it is important to look for a game with favorable rules. More than any other casino game, the rules for blackjack will vary considerably from casino to ca-
sino, with some blackjack games being better for the player than others. The most important rule look out for – and one that is becoming routine – is the 6-5 blackjack payout. It has often been discussed in this column, but if you want to play on good blackjack games, it is essential that you avoid these tables at all cost. Only play on games that offer 3-2 payouts on blackjacks. The fewer decks, the better. Additionally, your best value is to play at a casino that offers the following combination of rules that are advantageous to the player: The fewer decks, the better. Surrender, both early and late. Double down allowed on any two cards.
www.AccentOnTampaBay.com
Double down allowed after splitting pairs. Multiple pair splitting allowed, plus re-splitting aces. Dealer stands on a soft 17. While many Las Vegas casinos now offer terrible rules on blackjack, there are still several places where a good game can be had, and one such joint on Freemont St. offers probably the best game in town. The El Cortez (600 E. Fremont St.) is probably the best place to play blackjack in the Downtown area. They still spread a singledeck blackjack game that still offers the ideal 3-2 odds on a blackjack. That game has a house edge of about .3%, while a double-deck game there comes with a .45% edge. Both games can be played for $5 on weekdays, $10 on weekends. Sure, there are other decent blackjack games in Vegas, but you are looking at games with a $25 minimum. And you not going to bring Vegas to its knees at $5 a pop. ‑‑What I like best about the El Cortez is that almost all the games are a single deck with 3-2 for snapper, and one of my favorite rules, doubling on any two cards. The double deck game allows doubling before and after splits. Be aware, Bob, that they DO sweat the money at the El Cortez. If you use any spread betting, plan on being backed off the game.

WEDDINGS: Looking Forward/Looking Back
by Dr. Lori Verderame
I
t’s wedding season again. Summer weddings all their glory usher in brides in white dresses, towering cakes, and flowers galore. No matter the couple, there are some mainstays when it comes to weddings such as designer dresses and heirloom jewelry. DRESS UP You know the designers’ names: Vivienne Westwood, Marchesa, Randi Rahm, Rivini, Vera Wang, etc. Brides in 2018 are looking forward in their dress selections. Today’s brides are choosing daring dress designs complete with wedding gowns in basic black and eye-popping red. Floral prints, sequins and over-the-top applique work are all the rage replacing traditional white dresses covered in pearls and lace. And for the very daring bride, she’ll be wearing pants or even short-shorts down the aisle instead of a ball gown. While everything new might be the case when it comes to wedding gowns, some parts of a wedding are all about the old and the borrowed even if the wedding gown is new and possibly, blue. That’s right, today’s brides are turning their backs on the ultra-contemporary, new, and unusual options in the realm of wedding jewelry. Brides and grooms are accepting gifts of bling or borrowing family heir-

loom pieces from Grandma and Grandpa that harken back to the styles of yesteryear. Brides are choosing engagement rings, earrings, bracelets and necklaces that look back about one hundred years ago to the Art Deco era of the roaring 1920s. Large central set stones
–everything from diamonds and citrines to emeralds and sapphires--are trending in engagement rings. And, if a bride wants a traditional diamond, it better be big and cut like a cushion or in a round, oval, or square manner. These stunningly oversized rings are what gave statement rings their name. And, a statement they do make. Asymmetrically cut stones are out and standard symmetry is in. To top off the grand engagement ring are diamond-encrusted inserts and eternity bands that can be worn alone and still speak volumes about a couple’s love and devotion. For the big day, lavalier penwww.AccentOnTampaBay.com
dants of diamonds and crystals set in white gold and platinum filigree showing the glitz and glamour of the early 1900s adorn the necks of today’s brides, bridesmaids, and brides’ mothers and guests. To match the drop pendant lavaliers, drop earrings are the choice of most brides this season. Drop earrings, to match the drop pendants of lavalier necklaces, are popular too. Most of them recall the black/ white color scheme of the Art Deco movement while adding large stones for impact in floral designs or repeating geometric shapes. When it comes to wedding dresses, new is cool but if you are looking at accessories for the neck, wrist or ears, the words that describe wedding jewelry this season are heirloom, vintage, and antique. Bucs Bits WILL THE REAL JAMEIS WINSTON RAISE HIS HAND? A few years ago, when the Bucs signed Jameis Winston, I questioned why they did it. I was assured they vetted him every which way from Sunday and they were satisfied that his bad boy behavior as behind him. I still wasn’t convinced. Stealing a soda or some crab cakes is stupid kid stuff but sexual assault is a whole different matter. This was more than childish high jinks. After an “investigation” by his school seemed to clear him of any wrongdoing he continued in school. Jameis seemed to buy into the program and he seemed that he cleaned up his act. I began to think I had misjudged him. Jameis has been doing great things in the community, working with kids at risk, running a football camp and trying to improve education. He started “TheJameis Winston Dream Foundation.“ It is amazing what the Foundation has accomplished in a very short time. He was able to transform a classroom into a new state of the art technology center where kids are working with 3D-printers, robots, and tablets. I saw kids that were so excited to go to school, they were clapping and cheering. It was wonderful to see the impact this program has had on the kids and this was just the beginning. I just hope that the positive impact that the “Dream Room” has had won’t be negated by the latest Jameis drama. I spoke to Jameis a few weeks ago and I suggested that he should consider getting a driver. High profile people are targets. When I worked on political campaigns, we would never, never, never let a candidate drive. I also suggested that he be very careful of the friends that he hung out with. Some of them don’t have your best interest at heart. I guess my advice was a little late. I really hope Jameis has finally gotten the message and he sticks to what he needs to do. So what’s it going to be Jameis? Are you going to stand up and be the person that people hoped for and the person that you have shown you can be or are you going to be just another guy who will fade from the spotlight? It’s all up to you now. Good luck. I hope you make it. IS EVERYONE READY FOR THE BUC’S 2018 SEASON? Training camp starts on July 29th. Things have been humming along since the draft. I’m sure everyone loved all the action at the draft party and getting their first look at the first round pick, Vita Vea. Other teams should be very afraid, he is a very large man! (But he has a great smile.) Let’s hope Vita follows in the steps of the previous first-round defensive tackles, Gerald McCoy, Anthony McFarland and Warren Sapp. Vita comes to Tampa from the University of Washington by way of California. Welcome to Buc’s Land, Vita, and good luck. In addition to Vita, we welcomed back one of our own, Jason Pierre-Paul. Jason played at USF before playing with the New Jersey— sorry—the New York Giants. “The Mike Evans Family Foundation“ whose goal is to help kids who don’t have the resources to go to college, kids from low income families that have worked hard to apply to go to school and get in don’t have the money to go. Mike said that if he didn’t have a scholarship he probably wouldn’t be where he is today. Secondly, he wants to help families that suffered from domestic violence because he grew up in that type of environment. He and his wife can relate to both of these so they decided to focus on both. The Foundation started small but they hope to grow so they can help kids and families that need a hand up. They have plans for a lot more things in the near future. They had a very successful golf tournament in May and also gave several scholarships to kids in his local Texas area. Many Bucs, past and present have started foundations and they are making a huge impact on lives. It’s wonderful to see these young men and their families appreciate the blessings they have been given and want to pay it forward.

THE BUCS HAVE BEEN VERY ACTIVE IN THE COMMUNITY. In no particular order, here are some of the things that they have been doing to improve Tampa Bay. “The Cut For The Cure” supports the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation.
