Offshore Racing: Miss Geico Takes The Checkered Flag... Again Story and photos by Melissa W. Martino

hat’s it like to skim the water in a powerboat at 180 mph? We mere mortals may never know, but the Miss Gieco team does. I had the pleasure of watching the recent 2018 Sarasota Superboat Grand Prix from the security of the Miss Geico team’s support boat. The water was choppy that day, so Ms. G topped out at around 140 mph - still pretty darned fast. At 50-feet long and with 3,300 horsepower driving her, it’s no wonder she takes the checkered flag so often, including ten world championships since 2004. A boat can be amazing, but it’s the expertise of the driver and throttleman that win a race. The driver keeps the boat on course while other boats (a different race going on at the same time) maneuver around him. The throttleman controls the boat’s speed and trim. Miss Geico is helmed by driver James Sheppard and throttleman Steve Curtis, both seasoned winners. The Sarasota race had 3 super boats contending for the flag, which may not sound like a lot of boats, but when you consider there are only about 12 in this class in the country — and only about 24 in the world, it becomes even more impressive. Race lengths vary, but this race was 67 miles on a 4-turn oval for about 25 minutes, with giant buoys marking the turns. The powerboats have poor visibility as windows are small and narrow for safety reasons, so the support team is in constant contact with the racers to let him know what’s happening around them. Ms. G’s support team consists of Gary Stray, Crew Chief; Gary Goodell, Marketing; Scott Colton, Managing Member; and Scotty Begovich, Transportation. Did I mention it was HOT that day? It was 90° with a feels-like of 105°. James and Steve had to don their fire suits and climb into a small spaced enclosed cockpit with no A/C. I did not envy them at that moment, but the exhilaration of taking the checkered flag brought big smiles to their faces after the race was over.

There is another Offshore Racing event coming up in September in Clearwater — the 10th Annual Clearwater SBI championship, Sept 28-30. Let’s see if Miss Geico can continue her winning streak. immy Hula’s “Surf-Shack” themed restaurant is a fresh addition to Northeast St. Petersburg’s dining offerings. Casual and fun with a clear beach vibe, Hula’s has a tasty and interesting menu with clever titles. The cuisine is sort of Mexico meets Hawaii meets the Caribbean. Especially known for their famous fish tacos, they also serve up unique spins on other taco stylings, such as the “Wipeout” with marinated steak, shrimp, fries, jack cheese, avocado, salsa, and baja sauce, and “Johnny Utah” with smoked pork, mac n’ cheese, pickle, bacon, scallion and BBQ sauce. You can veg out with the “Tree Hugger” with black beans, zucchini, mushroom, onion, cotija, and crema. On our recent foray to Hula’s we ordered the Shrimp Po’ Boy sandwich served on a rustic roll, with crispy shrimp, banana pepper, lettuce tomato, and the ever-important “voodoo” sauce. We also sampled the Teriyaki Bowl, with jasmine rice, zucchini, mushrooms, onion, carrots, pineapple and Lava (not sure what the lava is, but the dish was delish.) Appetizers — or rather “Shackatizers” — include such items as Spinach Artichoke Empanadas, Tsunami Shrimp, and Gnarly Nachos. Of course, there are salads, burgers, sides, and a kid-friendly menu as well. Accompanying some great food and contributing to Hula’s vibe is live entertainment on certain nights. We enjoyed vocalist/guitarist Scott Fallon on our recent visit with his renditions of Jimmy Buffet mixed in with some old and new familiar tunes. aylor Swift is a superstar who managed to completely cross over from country to the mainstream. She has shown that she is perhaps the sharpest, savviest populist singer/songwriter of her generation. These skills were evident on her earliest hits, but her 2nd album, 2008’s Fearless, showcased a songwriter discovering who she was. Fearless was certified gold in its first week of release, and the record gained momentum throughout 2009, earning several platinum certifications as “Love Story,” “White Horse,” “You Belong with Me,” “Fifteen,” and “Fearless” all scaled the upper reaches of the country charts. Speak Now, delivered in 2010, consolidated her success and she moved into the stratosphere of superstardom. and as a session artist before going solo. He and his band (Kenn Moutenot on drums, and Charlie Torres on bass) performed “Hang Carmine Appice on Sloopy”, “Free Ride”, “Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo” and more. Kenn may well be the happiest drummer I have ever seen — barefoot, with a perrenial smile and lion’s mane flying. The friendly smile continues off stage as well. Vanilla Fudge closed the show with “People Get Ready”, and “You Keep Me Hanging On” to mention a few tunes. The band’s musicians are original with the exception of bassist Pete Bremy, who has been with them for 9 years. Mark Stein is on organ, Vince Martell on guitar, and Carmine Appice on drums. They have all performed with other stellar rock names as they take time off from the Fudge to explore other avenues from time to time. Carmine has performed with Jeff Beck, Pink Floyd, Rod Stewart (with whom he wrote “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy” and “Young Turks”). He is now going on tour performing with The Rascals. Hippiefest may have left the building for now, but the timeless music that we all love rocks on.

he “Magic Bus” stopped at Ruth Eckerd Hall recently filled with 60’s-70’s hit makers for Hippiefest 2018, presenting Vanilla Fudge, Rick Derringer, Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels, and Badfinger featuring Joey Molland. The festival included a marketplace with live local music, food, vendors and a 70s car show. The bands haven’t lost their touch and gave the enthusiastic crowd just what they had hoped for. The musicians had a genuinely good time filling in on each other’s songs, and the comaraderie even continued backstage. Joey Molland (Badfinger) opened the show accompanied by Rick Derringer and his band with several of his hits, including “No Matter What.” Mitch Ryder and his keyboardist, Pat Harwood, joined the Derringer Band next with such gems as “Devil With A Blue Dress” into “Good Golly Miss Molly.” Rick Derringer has quite a discography having played with some amazing musicians in different groups

conic vocalist Ann Wilson of Heart is gearing up for a busy summer that will see her performing on the “Stars Align Tour” with Jeff Beck and Paul Rodgers, coming to Tampa on Sunday, August 26 At Midflorida Credit Union Amphitheatre, and prepping the release of her new solo album, Immortal, due out September 14 via BMG . “I am thrilled to have been asked to perform on the ‘Stars Align Tour’ with Jeff Beck and Paul Rodgers,” shares Ann. “They are both long time favorites of mine! They are masters at their craft and it is an honor to share the stage this summer.” For the new release, Ann has teamed with original Heart producer Mike Flicker (“Dreamboat Annie,” “Magazine,” “Little Queen,” “Dog and Butterfly” and “Bebe Le Strange,” among others) for an album that will pay homage to musicians lost in the past few years. Fittingly titled Immortal,, the album features 10 musically diverse tracks that pay homage to some of the singer’s favorite songs and artists, all of whom have passed away in recent years and whose music poignantly lives on. Ann chose the album title Immortal, after revealing some working titles early on in the project. “The original working titles evolved as the concept for the album evolved; a little bit at a time,” explains Ann. “As my understanding of what I had undertaken grew and clarified, I realized a larger truth; that the souls may have departed but the songs will forever be their resonances. These are the poets of our time and their expressions must be handed down. Poetry is lasting and elemental like carvings in rock.” The finely etched tracks that comprise Immortal, cover a lot of musical ground, with many highlights including songs by Leonard Cohen (“A Thousand Kisses Deep”), Amy Winehouse (“Back to Black”), David Bowie (“I’m Afraid of Americans”), Lesley Gore (“You Don’t Own Me”) and Tom Petty (“Luna”). Ann says the criteria for choosing this collection of songs was easy. “First of all, I had to LOVE them! They had to be songs I could get inside of authentically as a singer. Lyrics are important to me but the most important thing is always the marriage of words and melody that makes the song magic!” Fans can expect to hear an assortment of Heart hits along with tracks from her solo career and upcoming album at her show.

ulling up to the porte-cochere at the DoubleTree by Hilton Orlando at SeaWorld, while very nice and tropical, does not begin to tell the story of what lies beyond. When this hotel was reimagined two years ago, it made it one of the largest DoubleTrees in the world. They really thought of everything the traveler could want, from families to business folks to weddings. Being steps away from Seaworld, Discovery Cove and the Orange County Convention Center, and only 10 minutes from the airport is an added bonus. The sleek lobby’s centerpiece is the Sonoma Bar, which serves up favorite libations for the weary traveler to enjoy. At the end of the lobby are comfy chairs and a gigantic TV screen to enjoy watching sports action. The extremely high ceiling has skylight windows which change the ambiance of the lobby between day and night. Shops, a convenience store, UPS store and car rental are easily accessed off the lobby. When we checked in at the desk, we received our room key along with some of Doubletree’s delicious fresh made chocolate chip cookies (reason alone to stay at a Doubletree!) When we walked out the back lobby doors on the way to our room, we discovered just how large the complex is — 28 acres — and very verdant. Lots of lush landscaping, seasonal flowers, palm and evergreen trees, and fountain pools. The winding pathways with directional landscape lighting look especially attractive (and romantic) at night. Several swimming pools can be found around the property, some more attractive to families, and some for adults with heated spa pools. Outdoor fun includes a thatched roof-covered billiard table, life-sized checkers set, and mini-golf. A family pool party with DJ adds to the good times.

he 1,020 renovated guest rooms are situated in two and three-story buildings and a tower. Our room was located in the tower, with a great view. The rooms are super comfortable, with a warm inviting decor and luxurious beds.

The centrally located Laguna Restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner - mostly comfort food. We had some tasty corn chowder, a Caesar salad, and grilled cheese on garlic challah bread, with cheddar, smoked gouda, and manchego cheese accompanied by fire roasted tomato soup. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a grab-n-go market for convenience next door to the Laguna. While at the DoubleTree, we enjoyed a fabulous breakfast spread in their new outdoor event space which is amazing. We could see why it is so popular for weddings. The expanded indoor and outdoor area covers more than 100,000 square feet of comfortable meeting space for conferences.

e also had an opportunity to sample some delicious dinner selections from the DoubleTree’s culinary team on our last night at the resort. Steaks, pork chops, potatoes au gratin, fire roasted veggies, and delectable desserts. We definitely took advantage of the proximity of the hotel to experience several theme parks during our stay. If you haven’t been to Discovery Cove, do put it on your bucket list. It’s as if you landed on an island in the Caribbean. Beautiful landscaping, animal experiences (beavers, sloths, bird aviary, otters), gorgeous fish you can snorkel with, a winding river rafting feature, and a delicious buffet. We have been there previously and had the Swim With The Dolphins Experience, which is definitely fun. This time around we tried the SeaVenture, where you walk underwater in a dive helmet, surrounded by tropical fish. Loved it! We also dined with Shamu at SeaWorld, where your table is up against the pool so you can watch the whales do their thing. Very interesting, and the food was quite good and plentiful. After dining, guests are taken into the main amphitheater to see the Shamu show.

isney Springs was also on our list, as they have so many new restaurants that have opened recently. We dined at Celebrity Chef Art Smith’s Homecomin’, which serves up southern style “eats.” Bring on that yummy Fried Chicken and some Fried Green Tomatoes! Some unique taste treats were the Ham & Jam Biscuits layered with pimento cheese, Tasso ham, country ham, and blackberry fig jam, and the Fried Chicken & Doughnuts served with house-made sugar doughnuts and mashed potatoes. The hotel’s shuttle will take you to SeaWorld and Universal complimentary, and to Disney World for a nominal fee. It may sound cliche to say the DoubleTree by Hilton Orlando has it all, but it actually does, and everyone one of the staff that we encountered was friendly and helpful as well. And don’t forget they have those amazing cookies!

Treasured photographs and artifacts from Graham’s early life and career will be on loan from the Graham family. An installation of “The Joshua Light Show”- the trailblazing liquid light show conceived in 1967 by multimedia artist Joshua White, which served as a backdrop to many Graham-produced shows - will be customized by White specifically for the exhibition. It will be one of several gallery components designed to evoke the sights and sounds of the era.

ig Cat Rescue is the world’s largest accredited sanctuary devoted to big cats. The nonprofit sanctuary is home to more than 70 lions, tigers, leopards, cougars, servals, caracals, and

various other exotic cats. BCR has built enclosures in a natural habitat with foliage and shelter on 55 acres in the Citrus Park area of north Tampa. They provide the best nutritional and medical care possible, and have conditioning and enrichment programs to provide the cats physical and psychological well being. Clyde Butcher Reveals Dalí’s Painted Landscapes as His Own Photographed Dreamscapes Thru Nov 25

urrently at the Dali Museum, Clyde Butcher: Visions of Dalí’s Spain delivers a glimpse into Salvador Dalí’s homeland. The Dalí commissioned Clyde Butcher, the nature photographer known as the “Ansel Adams of the Florida landscape,” to travel to Spain to capture a series of technically brilliant, epically scaled photographs. Throughout his career, Butcher’s photographs have altered people’s perceptions about the Florida environment, and now, will alter the understanding of the surrealist master and the landscape that made him. The Dalí’s new exhibition features 41 original photographs that transport viewers to the striking Catalonian coast, where they are invited to not only appreciate the beauty of Dalí’s beloved environs but also to contemplate the landscapes from an alternate perspective. For this project, Butcher was asked to produce a series of black and white photographs documenting the dramatic splendor of Dalí’s world. “Butcher’s unique abilities to capture the power of light, land and water in black & white deliver spectacular insights into the landscape that had such a profound influence on Dali’s vision and obsessions,” said Hank Hine, Dalí Museum Executive Director. The show is Butcher’s first photographic study

he highly anticipated Toy Story Land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios is now open for playing in! Calling all toys to enter Andy’s backyard! We were lucky enough to shrink down to toy size for the Grand Opening of the park June 30th. We wandered the streets under giant Christmas lights and hovering tinker toys seeking adventure on the new rides based on some of the favorite characters from the Toy Story franchise. The new 11-acre playground is cluttered with toys, not all neatly arranged, but messy — just like a youngster’s toy box would/ should be. Many of the Pixar toys wander the streets for your entertainment. The toy soldiers are our favorite, and they’re pretty darn good drummers, too! Two new fun rides will appeal to kids and adults alike, the Slinky Dog Dash and the Alien Swirling Saucers. The ever-popular Toy Story Mania has been expanded with a third track. Slinky Dog Dash is a smooth coaster that everyone can enjoy, and is fun to watch. CONTINUED

Some really cute items, such as the Slinky Dog headband, little cars from the Alien Saucer ride, a Buzz Lightyear bubble blower, T-shirts, backpacks—just to name a few. The merchandise is sold from large toy trucks at the moment, but I think they may be overwhelmed with customers and have to rethink that.

At night the park takes on a whole different look when the Christmas lights and structures light up. I say “structures” because nothing looks like a “building.” Everything has the appearance of being created out of toy pieces - toy blocks, erector sets, tinker toys. The restrooms are housed in a building block structure with giant Scrabble board pieces. The always amazing Disney Imagineers certainly worked overtime on this park. In speaking to one of them at the Grand Opening of the park, he said the hardest part of creating it was getting the perspective right of the oversized toys being believable. They certainly got it right. Toy Story Land is part of Disney’s Hollywood Studios, so there is no separate charge to enjoy it. ne of only 158 Master Sommeliers in the United States and of only 249 in the entire world, George Miliotes chose to set up shop in Disney Springs with his new venture, Wine Bar George. With this most prestigious title, you might expect a stuffy wine snob, but George is very affable and down-to-earth, and as expected, really knows his stuff. As a matter of fact, Wine Bar George is the only Master Sommelier-led wine bar in Florida. George is not a stranger to the world of Disney as he was part of the California Grill opening at Disneyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Contemporary Resort and managed it until 2002. He also created an award-winning wine list for that restaurant. George makes annual treks to wine-growing regions in Europe and South Africa, keeping relationships with vintners and joining in the winemaking process helping to create custom blends. Wine Bar George has over 130 wines served by the bottle, glass, and ounces. The wine list includes more than 40 varietals from regions around the world, using the Coravin, the Vinfinity system and wine on tap. The wine bar also offers a variety of cocktails, beer, and cider. Wine Bar George is sleek, casual and minimalist, with lots of oak woods and black metal supports, and some wine barrels serving as table stands, all to maximize the effect of the pairing of wine and food.

xecutive Chef Ron Rupert is supplying the tasty foods that are perfectly paired with various wines. Ron is also an alumnus of the California Grill, so the two are seasoned associates. We had the delightful occasion to experience pairings from the Wine Bar George menu, which leans toward Southern Mediterranean. We started our repast with a charcuterie board selection of artisanal cheeses and crafted meats and condiments. Then came small plates with creations such as Crispy Mac & Cheese Bites with tomato nage and pecorino, House-Made Meatballs with triple cheese polenta and tomato sauce, and Chicken

Skewers with Japanese spice and Asian slaw accompanied by a variety of wines including a Giocato Gorika Brda - Slovenia ‘17, a Casas Del Bosque, Reserve Casablanca - Chile ‘16, and a Zuccardi Salta - Argentina ‘16. Family Style plates followed with Skirt Steak Chimichurri with roasted potatoes, a Grilled Whole Greek Sea Bass with cannellini bean ragout, and a Wine Braised Chicken with mushrooms and Yukon potato hash. All were served with seasonal vegetables. The paired wines were a Selbach-Oster Bomer Zeltinger Schlossberg, Mosel, Germany ‘16 (a lovely Riesling which can be found only at Wine Bar George in Florida) and a Foillard Côte du Py Morgon, France ‘16 (a very seductive Beaujolais.) Dessert arrived in the form of a perfect Florida favorite — Key Lime pie, and a very unique Olive Oil Cake with candied olives and lemon mascarpone.

s a new pier rises where the last inverted pyramid stood downtown St. Petersburg, here’s a look back at the history of the piers. Commerce, tourism, recreation, and even the quest for eternal youth were the primary incentives for building piers along St. Petersburg’s downtown waterfront as early as 1854. For more than 160 years, developers and entrepreneurs pushed wooden or concrete structures from the shoreline to the deeper waters of Tampa Bay. Railroads were behind the early development, allowing cargo loads to be transferred from ship to rail with the least amount of effort. A large and profitable fishing industry evolved. Electrically powered trolley cars shuttled tourists to and from cruise ships. Promoters built bathhouses, spas, and bait houses to entice locals and visitors, and casino gathering halls of various, often controversial, styles were proposed, built, destroyed, loved, and detested. Competing piers were built only 10 feet apart. Mother Nature’s elements, including a hurricane, and politics ravaged most of the remaining structures. St. Petersburg Museum of History education director and historian Nevin D. Sitler has combined images curated for a semipermanent pier exhibit with more than 150 other photographs for this entertaining look at the “front door to the Sunshine City.” 100

Prune the Hedges from your Crap Game Dear Mark: When playing craps, I am aware that it is best to stay away from any prop box bets. But when playing the Don’t Pass line for a $10 bet with a max lay of $60, if the point is a 4 or 10, is it wise to hedge this bet with a $10 Hard 4 or 10? Bill P. In 1933, Wilson Mizner lay dying. He was fifty-eight and all his life he had been a gamester. “Do you want a priest? he was asked, during an interval of consciousness. “I want a priest, a rabbi and a Protestant clergyman,” he managed to flash back. “I want to hedge my bets.” Was it was a good move on Mizner s part? Perhaps, but when it comes to the game of craps, my advice remains the same, never hedge your bets. Hedging your bet in craps is when you make one bet with the erroneous belief it will protect another wager somewhere else on the layout. The logic here is analogous to diversifying your investment portfolio by buying

bonds to protect against losses that you might experience in the stock market. Usually, though, both investments won t go south on you simultaneously. Every bet on the crap layout has a negative expectation.

Hedge betting by using one wager to offset the negative probabilities of another wager is just not smart betting on a crap game. What you are doing is taking a high house edge bet on the Hard 4 or 10 (The hard 4 and 10 carry a casino advantage of 11.1%) and expecting it to make a Don t Pass wager (1.4%, lower by laying odds) of higher quality. You can’t, Bill, have it both ways. You cannot protect yourself here without being hurt there. Not only can a hedge betting system NOT beat a game like craps, but it also won t even dent the house edge. Bucs Bits THE BUC’S 2018 SEASON Training camp started on July 29th. Practice starts at 8:45 am in order to take advantage of the cooler temperatures and then to enhance the experience, the final half of some practices will move into to new air-conditioned indoor facilities. Things have been humming along since the draft. I’m sure everyone loved all the action at the draft party and getting their first look at the first round pick, Vita Vea. Other teams should be very afraid, he is a very large man! (But he has a great smile.) Let’s hope Vita follows in the steps of the previous first-round defensive tackles, Gerald McCoy, Anthony McFarland and Warren Sapp. Vita comes to Tampa from the University 112

THE BUCS HAVE BEEN VERY ACTIVE IN THE COMMUNITY. In no particular order, here are some of the things that they have been doing to improve Tampa Bay. “The Cut For The Cure” supports the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation. More than 40 players and staff had their head or beard’s shaved or got their hair colored as is done by patient and survivors of Pediatric Cancer. Over the past 6 years, the Bucs have raised over $315,000 to help the kids. This fundraiser was led by Deno Anagnost, VP of Sales. Deno, a cancer survivor, raised $22,000 on his own this year alone. The Bucs have vowed to raise $100,000. Gerald McCoy donated $30,000. They beat their goal. The Bucs have always had the community’s back, doing anything that needs to be done, never asking for any credit. That Is just the Glazer’s way. The N.P.F. Is headquartered in Tampa and is dedicated to funding research to stamp out childhood cancer. It’s wonderful to see these young men and their families appreciate the blessings they have been given and want to pay it forward. PRO DAD AND KIDS EXPERIENCE Tony Dungy hosted the Pro Dad and Kids Experience in April at R.J. Coach Dungy is the national spokesperson for All Pro Dads. This was the 100 All Pro Dad Experience that has been in 26 different NFL, MLB and NACC markets since 2002. Mike Evans has started, along with his wife, Ashli, “The Mike Evans Family Foundation“ whose goal is to help kids who don’t have the resources to go to college, kids from low income families that have worked hard to apply to go to school and get in don’t have the money to go.
