Belleview Inn
The “Queen of the Gulf” Lives On
Story and Photos by Melissa W. Martino and Al Martino 10

The inviting hotel lobby.
A sunny and airy guestroom. No two are alike.
I
n 1897, railroad magnate Henry Plant hoped that his new endeavor, the Hotel Belleview, located on a bluff overlooking Clearwater Bay in Bellaire, FL, would attract the elite to Florida’s West Coast (and use his railroad to get there) when it opened to much fanfare. And it did. For over 100 years (and several changes — it became the Belleview Biltmore) it played host to dignitaries, presidents and celebrities. After almost falling totally to the wrecking ball much to the dismay of the community, the last grand period resort on Florida’s West Coast was saved by JMC Communities which kept a historic portion of the hotel and created a luxury golf community around it. The community has carriage homes and condos (referred to as mid-rise residences.) We attended the grand opening ribbon cutting ceremony and a tour of the newly reimagined resort. Having visited the old hotel many times, we were concerned that it would have lost it’s original charm. However, we were very impressed by how the transition was handled. Very clean lines without clutter, soft beiges and grey tones, natural wood, and the front structure is totally recognizable. It still has a quiet, relaxed charm throughout, including the guest rooms. One interesting touch on an upper floor is a section of wall that was left exposed, showing the original beams and construction, and the original blueprints are also displayed.

t the opening, JMC Communities CEO Michael Cheezum and the renowned Florida artist Christopher Still were on hand, along with other area dignitaries. Christopher Still has a lot to do with touches of nostalgia in the lobby area. He and his wife painstakingly studied different elements of the old hotel over several years, and Christopher created magnificent paintings in the lobby area that fascinatingly tell the story of the Belleview. A bar off the lobby also contains many pieces relating to the history of the hotel on display. The Belleview Inn is located at 25 Belleview Blvd, Bellaire, FL 33756. Still’s infinite details are amazing. The little bell lamp shown here contains figures prominent to the new hotel.

Every item in this painting by Christopher Still is meaningful to the hotel. Mrs. Still (here in period costume) did a lot of research for it.

T
he culture of ancient China was divinely inspired. Shen Yun’s works reflect this rich spiritual heritage. Travel back to the magical world of ancient China. Experience a lost culture through the incredible art of classical Chinese dance, and see legends come to life. Shen Yun makes this possible by pushing the boundaries of the performing arts, with a unique blend of stunning costuming, high-tech backdrops, and an orchestra like no other. Be prepared for a theatrical experience that will take your breath away. The traditional Chinese culture Shen Yun presents cannot be seen anywhere else in the world—not even in China. There, the ruling communist regime has viewed China’s rich spiritual and artistic heritage as a threat to its ideology and for decades tried to erase it.

Innisbrook Resort South Course NEW GREENS!
T
he already amazing South Course at Innisbrook has been improved with the planting of TifEagle Bermuda Grass, the same lissa e M y putting surface found on Innisbrook’s Copperhead Course. The eb verag o c & Copperhead is, of course, where the Valspar Championship takes place s Photo every year, and where PGA Tour professionals love to play. The South Course renovation takes it back to it’s original size after 35 years of subtle reconfigurations. Using a no-till method of turf replacement results in a firmer, more consistent playing surface. All four courses at Innisbrook now have the same greens. Guest rooms are also undergoing some upgrades, and are expected to be finished in the fall. Each suite is being completely refreshed with new furniture, furnishings, flooring, appliances, quartz counters, cabinets, lighting, draperies and other decor. Dining is always great at Innisbrook. Turnberry Pub is a casual dining experience inside or outside overlooking the Island course. My favorite is Packard’s Steakhouse — worth a trip alone. Innisbrook is offering a 20% savings when you stay for two nights or more now through April 30. Enjoy this resort surrounded by 900 acres of beautiful golf courses and woods, and relax. n trend in hotel design and sought out by stylish travelers, W Fort Lauderdale is a magnet for sophisticates. Their $55 million-dollar renovation was completed in 2018, and is obvious in the sleek elegance of the hotel (which also contains residences.) There are 517 guest rooms, suites, and residential suites which have all been redesigned and modernized. The W is located right on Ft. Lauderdale Beach Blvd, and close to all that is happening in Ft. Lauderdale. Only a few minutes drive from luxury shops on Las Olas Boulevard, Port Everglades, and the airport. A water taxi can also take you to several points of interest, and complimentary bicycle rentals are available at the hotel.
w
When I say fashionable, I mean it literally. The hotel features changing fashion themes in the lobby (the spacious area is actually called The Living Room.) When we stayed at the hotel, the Susanne Bartsch Fashion exhibit was in the Living Room, which you could observe while enjoying a cocktail from the W’s impressive bar. Susanne is the legendary NYC party girl, and her costumes are known for pushing boundaries. The Living Room is the heart of the hotel, where folks gather to have a drink, chat, or just relax in the comfortable sofas and chairs.

guest rooms are not cookie cutter. They all have the same relaxed and comfortable color scheme, but the layouts are different. Floor to ceiling sliding glass doors afford amazing views of the W’s fabulous location. The blue carpet design is reminiscent of ocean waves, and white bedding and appointments along with light wood tones carry the ocean-feel throughout. The featherbeds and duvets are very, very comfortable. Our room had a spacious bathroom area with set tub overlooking the beach, and a balcony that was accessible from either the bedroom or the bathroom. There is 24-hour room service, and you also have an in-room coffee maker, among other perks.

he W’s pool area (WET) is very cool and unique. Located above the Living Room, you can walk up the stairs through a cutout in the pool to an oasis of white chairs and day beds overlooking the ocean. There is also a full-service poolside bar. A 24/7 FIT gym at the hotel has the latest equipment if you are inclined to work out. You can also head over to the beach for beachside bootcamp and yoga. At the W’s AWAY Spa, you can detox and unwind with a massage and other treatments.

e were also there to experience the W’s new El Vez (tongue and cheek reference to Elvis) Mexican Restaurant from James Beard Award winner, Stephen Starr. We went back several times to try out different selections, and all were superb. The Classic Guacamole is the best I’ve ever had, as well as the house made chips. It’s made with cilantro, lime, onion, serrano, and tomato. Queso Fundido with wild mushrooms, green chiles, and a flour tortilla is so good we ordered it every time we went back there to eat. Tacos al Carbon is a build your own taco platter with grilled chicken, shrimp, and skirt steak and all the fixings. The restaurant is part open air, so you can dine outside and watch the ocean waves. There are several restaurants on site. Another by Steven Starr is Steak 954, providing more of a fine dining atmosphere, but also with some outdoor seating overlooking the ocean. One wall of the restaurant is an aquarium filled with mesmerizing jellyfish. We ate there on our last night, and enjoyed a filet mignon cooked perfectly, along with truffle potato gratin and a baby beet salad with toasted pistachios, goat cheese and sherry vinaigrette. Instead of bread for the table Steak 954 serves wonderful popovers with chives. Their lobster bisque soup with creme fraiche is equally tasty. Off the Living Room is a Sushi Bar, with a menu designed by Chef Shuji Hiyakawa, a protégé of Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto. Sushi fare includes such items as Spicy Tuna Crispy Rice, Poke Bowls, Yellowtail Jalapeno and Lobster Roll with Wasabi Aoili.

y Beloved is an intensely personal album by pianist/ composer Michael Dulin. It is a beautifully melodic and passionate testament to enduring love, inviting you to live your own love story through 12 romantic solo piano songs. My Beloved blends classic and contemporary influences to create a beautifully melodic collection that critics are saying “Is Like A Long And Passionate Love Letter” and “Makes Every Time You Listen To It Feel Like Valentine’s Day.” Live and relive the magic of great love, through the prism of these timeless and evocative love songs. www.michaeldulin.com

While sharing the magic of timeless songs by such songwriting teams as Carole King and Gerry Goffin, Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil and as well as Burt Bacharach, Neil Sedaka, and Carole Bayer Sager, That Lovin’ Feeling also has spirited guest vocal appearances by B.J. Thomas, Neil Sedaka and Bill Medley in addition to backup singer Judith Hill and Tyrell’s daughter Lauryn Tyrell. JAMES HALL Lattice
H
ailed as “A warm-toned lyrical player” with “harmonic sophistication” (Kirk Silsbee, Downbeat Magazine), James Hall is a versatile trombonist/composer re-imagining professional musicianship for the millennial generation. Intricately weaving together voices, melodies, ideas and genres, Lattice is the alluring and inventive release from trombonist/composer James Hall. The album is built around the harmonious combination of Hall’s dexterous trombone and the virtuosic flute playing of Jamie Baum, a study in contrasts that proves remarkably pliable and expressive through Hall’s inspired vision.

LINDA RONSTADT Live In Hollywood

IVE IN HOLLYWOOD features amazing performances from a concert that Ronstadt recorded in 1980 for her HBO television special. Recorded at Television Center Studios in Hollywood, the concert captures Ronstadt at the peak of her reign as America’s most popular female rock singer. In concert, she was joined by an outstanding band. The CD has powerful renditions of her biggest hits – “Blue Bayou,” “Poor Poor Pitiful Me” and “It’s So Easy” – plus a previously unreleased six-minute jam of “You’re No Good.” The concert also showcased a trio of Top Ten hits from Ronstadt’s album – Mad Love – with performances of “I Can’t Let Go,” “How Do I Make You” and “Hurt So Bad.”
KEVIN SUN Trio
T
rio features bassist Walter Stinson and drummer Matt Honor on a set of complex compositions, devised from close study of the jazz tradition. On Trio, Sun crafts era-spanning compositions that are as propulsive and swinging as they are intricate and challenging. Sun appears on tenor as well as clarinet and the rarely-seen C-melody saxophone. While to the listener these songs offer knotty melodic lines and shape-shifting rhythms that are tricky but enticing to navigate, for Sun, each one posed a unique challenge. Sun’s supple clarinet can be heard on “Loading Screen” and the elegiac “Deliver the Keys.” The C-melody comes to the fore on the album’s sole standard, “All of Me,” www.thekevinsun.bandcamp.com

uinsin Nachoff’s Flux communicates a colourful palette of conceptual reasoning and musical expression in this release featuring saxophonist David Binney, pianist/keyboardist Matt Mitchell, drummers Kenny Wollesen and Nate Wood, plus a clutch of guest artists. Saxophonist/composer Nachoff’s overarching inspiration arose from the moon’s total eclipse of the sun in 2017. That event became a dramatic, natural metaphor for the band’s evolutionary creative process. www.whirlwindrecordings.com/

Celtic Woman North American Tour
By Barbara McGovern
C
eltic Women is touring North America in support of their Ancient Land album and will be appearing in St. Petersburg at the Mahaffey theater on March 13.
The group released their latest album in conjunction with their PBS special last fall. Celtic Women was founded almost 15 years ago in Dublin, and their first concert on PBS was so successful, they started to tour around the world, bringing the beauty of Irish music to all. Their music is traditional classic and modern contemporary, performed in Gaelic and English. Sharon Browne is the creative force behind Celtic Thunder, and music is arranged in part by David Downeys who was involved with Riverdance, which introduced Irish dancing to the world. The very talented ladies of Celtic Women also write and arranged some of the music in the show. They also are very accomplished musicans and they play several different instruments during the show. Over the years there have been a good many wonderful Irish singing groups. The Wolftones, The Irish Rovers and the Clancy Brother are just a few. I love them all but I call them the St. Patrick’s Day groups. Riverdance was the first theatre show that introduced real Irish culture to everyone. Now we have Celtic Women and Celtic Thunder. Celtic Women have sold over 10 million albums, and have received a Grammy. Between their concerts and their shows on PBS their fans are in the millions. They have been called the “Riverdance of Music,“ high praise and well deserved. Celtic Woman features the voices of Megan Walsh, Mairéad Carlin, Éabha McMahon and the violinist Tara McNeill, accompanied by a full ensemble of musicians and dancers. You can catch this delightful show at the Mahaffey Theater at 7:30pm on March 13. One Celtic Woman By Barbara McGovern
I
had the pleasure of interviewing Éabha (Eva) McMahon one of the ladies of Celtic Women. We covered a wide range of topics, from the tour, to how much sleep they get. One of the most interesting things to me was when Éabha told me about her struggles with Dyslexia. This is something that I am very familiar with since it’s has been a problem in my family. My husband, my kids and several nieces and nephews have dealt with it. Up until the early 60’s most educators didn’t know how to treat it. Kids and adults were told they weren’t trying hard enough, they were lazy or just dumb. Can imagine what that can do to people?
land Singing Festival and she was the reigning Leinster champion. At 15 she was the young-
est member of the choir for the original “Riverdance.” She went on tour in the U.S. with the Anúna Christmas Memories and the show was recorded by PBS and The DVD reached the top 10 on the Billboard charts. She went in to tour around Europe, and in 2015 she headlined a sold out a solo show in N.Y. She is currently developing her first solo album. Not bad for a kid that was told she couldn’t do it. Oh, and she also writes some of her own music. Éabha is just one of the brilliant and talented women of Celtic Woman.
Éabha was told she could never learn a language so don’t bother trying. Well, she went on to prove how wrong they were— she is fluent in both English and Irish. My husband didn’t Learn to read until 7th grade and he went on to college, earned a master degree plus several other graduate levels. It can be done if people are taught correctly. (For information about Dyslexia contact the International Dyslexia Association.) Éabha was nine when she was asked to record an album for a children’s book. She had been singing in the traditional Irish style from a very early age at home in Dublin. When she was 15 she won the under-18 all Irewww.AccentOnTampaBay.com

As a promoter and manager, he worked with iconic artists including the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Santana, Fleetwood Mac, the Who, Led Zeppelin, the Doors, and the Rolling Stones. It also traces the indomitable spirit of a man brought to the United States as an eleven-year-old Jewish refugee fleeing the Nazis, fueling a lifelong passion and advocacy for social justice. Treasured photographs and artifacts from Graham’s early life and career will be on loan from the Graham family. An installation of “The Joshua Light Show”- the trailblazing liquid light show conceived in 1967 by multimedia artist Joshua White, which served as a backdrop to many Graham-produced shows - will be customized by White specifically for the exhibition. It will be one of several gallery components designed to evoke the sights and sounds of the era.

The Dali Museum Presents
Magritte & Dali Coverage and photos by Melissa W. Martino
T
he Magritte & Dali exhibit at the Dali Museum is the first time the two surrealist icons have had a solo pairing. Magritte & Dalí takes viewers on a journey from the late 1920s to the early 1940s, the period when the two artists spent significant time together and displayed their works in the same Surrealist exhibitions. Although both had very different and distinctive approaches to their respective paintings, they were equally committed to implementing practices that challenged reality and generated fuller freedom of imagination and experience. Their works also employ several shared themes which are explored throughout the exhibition. Over 30 works are on display including photos of the artists. Visitors will enjoy the special interactive “cloud room” and the opportunity to capture images of themselves intermingled with surrealist icons & symbols. The exhibit continues through May 19, 2019. here are many truly great resorts in the Walt Disney World complex, and each one has some amazing dining opportunities. If you are visiting in, or near, the “World,” it’s worth a visit to a resort to enjoy some fine fare. We had the occasion to sample some tasty dishes recently at the newest restaurant at the Old Port Royale promenade of Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort, Sebastian’s Bistro, named after everyone’s favorite crab from The Little Mermaid. As the Disney designers do whenever there’s a restaurant theme made to appeal to adults as well as children, it’s subtle so as to not be too “cutesy.” Sebastian’s decor has warm woods, light tones, wainscoting, comfy chairs, and ambient lighting — Cape Cod homey. Sebastian’s Bistro is located on the dock right on the water affording spectacular sunsets and attractive evening lighting to guests.

Guava-Rita
T
he menu is surf n’ turf Caribbean-style, offering salad to steak and everything in between. We started off with a pretty margarita called Guava-Rita, with Herradura Reposado Tequila, Sweetand-Sour, and Guava with Pomegranate and Lime Juices. We’ve tried Wine Flights before, but Sebastian’s also offered a Rum Flight, which was enlightening. A sharable appetizer was Marauders Snack with Tostones, Arepas, and House-made Crackers with Black Bean Hummus, Guacamole, and Pico de Gallo. Another treat was the appetizer duet of Raw Sliced Tuna and Arepa with Chili-Mango Barbeque Sauce. The entree sampler consisted of Jerk Chicken with a dark rum glaze, Caribbean Goat Curry with Lime Crema, and Crispy Sustainable Cobia with mash plantain and escovitch sauce. Though we barely had room for dessert, the Trio of Minis was too delicious to pass up. The Mile Marker Zero is an iced key lime pop with sea salt and a tropical fruit sauce, and the Banoffee Tart is made with banana custard, chocolate ganache, and caramel sauce. The star of the trio was the Warm Chocolate Pudding, with dark chocolate cake, cocoa nibs tuile, and caramel crispies. Sebastian’s adjacent bar is open to the outside overlooking the pool, and has some clever rope swing sofas to relax and enjoy some music by strolling “pirates.” On your way out (or in) relax on the comfortable sofas in the very inviting “new” Old Port Royale lobby. HUNTING CHARLES MANSON
The Quest for Justice in the Days of Helter Skelter
I
by Lis Wiehl with Caitlin Rother
n the late summer of 1969, the nation was transfixed by a series of gruesome murders in the hills of Los Angeles. Newspapers and television programs detailed the brutal slayings of a beautiful actress as well as a hair stylist, an heiress, a businessman, and other victims. In the weeks and months that followed, law enforcement faced intense pressure to solve crimes that seemed to have no connection. Finally, Charles Manson and members of his “family” were arrested. The trials that followed once again captured the nation and forever secured Manson as a byword for the evil that men do. Former federal prosecutor Lis Wiehl has written a propulsive, page-turning historical thriller of the crimes and manhunt that mesmerized the nation.
A prominent trial lawyer, Lis Wiehl is also a professor at NY Law School and host on the Law & Crime live trial network. Caitlin Rother is a NY Times best-selling author or co-author of 12 books, and is a writing and research instructor. Nelson Books • www.thomasnelson.com

LUCKY DOG How Being a Veterinarian Saved My Life by Dr. Sarah Boston
W
hat happens when a veterinary surgical oncologist (laymen’s term: cancer surgery doctor) thinks she has cancer herself? Enter Sarah Boston: a vet who suspects a suspicious growth in her neck is thyroid cancer. From the moment she uses her husband’s portable ultrasound machine to investigate her lump — he’s a vet, too — it’s clear Lucky Dog is not your typical cancer memoir. She takes us on a hysterical and thought-provoking journey through the human healthcare system from the perspective of an animal doctor. Weaving funny and poignant stories of dogs she’s treated along the way, this is an insightful memoir about what the human medical world can learn from the way we treat our canine counterparts. Lucky Dog teaches us to trust our instincts, be our own advocates, and laugh while we’re doing it. Dr. Sarah Boston is an associate professor of surgical oncology in the department of small animal clinical sciences at the University of Florida. She is also President of the Veterinary Society of Surgical Oncology. She lives in Gainesville, FL. www.houseofanansi.com

Probability Guarantees Nothing Dear Mark: Every so often we hear about someone winning the lottery or hitting the grand prize on a progressive slot machine, but these odds are astronomical! How is it that someone, somewhere, always seems to be able to get lucky and beat the astronomical odds? What I’m trying to get at is that these odds are astronomical, and hence, the jackpot shouldn’t be hit, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Johnson T. Any jackpot that has a probability of hitting, like, for instance, a Powerball ticket or a progressive slot machine, ought to eventually pay off if it is played long enough. When given a set of possibilities
and many more. SARAH MCLACHLAN SET TO MAKE WYNN LAS VEGAS DEBUT - April. and enough trails, a favorable outcome should occur for some lucky bloke. That said, there are times that I am not entirely convinced that every gambling probability will come to fruition over time. One such surety unrealized is the a Special Bonus Keno ticket that many casinos offer. All you have to do is hit 19 out of 20, and you win $250,000. Sounds easy, right? Well, here is where I am going to need some convincing that this is even a possibility. Here’s the arithmetic. If you were to play one keno ticket per second, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, according to laws of probability, you would catch 19 out of 20 once every 93,420,116 years. Oh, and the odds of hitting it? Drum roll please – two quadrillion, 946 trillion, 096 billion, 780 million to one. Another is this popular ticket in Nevada—the 15 spot. The chances of your hitting it are 428 billion to one. Consider, Johnson, that no person has ever hit a solid 15 spot, a solid 14 spot, and to the best of my knowledge, a 13 out of www.AccentOnTampaBay.com
13 since gambling became legal in Nevada in 1931. Makes you sort of wonder why it’s popular, doesn’t it! So, should you even be playing? As long as you realize that hitting “the big one” is a neverin-your-lifetime probability, I am not opposed to dabbling a few – I mean a few – disposable dollars’ worth of Lottery Quick Picks for a shot at a once-in-a-lifetime possibility. However, limit those few-andfar-between dollars to when the jackpot exceeds the true odds of hitting it. With Mega Millions, that number is one in 258,890,850, which is an easier catch than the Powerball game at 292,201,338 to one. With jackpots in the millions, I can see how easy it is for players to inhale jackpot helium. But you need to ask yourself, are the spoils worth the cost of the hunt? Then again, even if your chances of hitting the big one are a teensy weensy bit better than zilch, you cannot beat those cosmological odds if you don’t play. 93

Celebrity Collections
PRESIDENT JOHN F. KENNEDY According to documents of the late First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, President John F. Kennedy collected antique scrimshaw and other objects of New England’s shipping and seafaring history. The young president from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts love of sailing near his family home on Cape Cod. The late President had collected fine examples of carved walrus tooth scrimshaw and other objects that referenced New England’s grand seafaring and whaling tradition. In the Kennedy’s private residence, President Kennedy’s antique scrimshaw and his engravings of ship and battle scenes were on display along with Mrs. Kennedy’s fine art collection of paintings and sculpture.
n my line of work, I have had the opportunity to appraise some very interesting high-profile objects belonging to some very famous individuals. Some of these objects are more memorable than others and some are downright unforgettable. Celebrity collections are not unlike other collections. Most are amassed over time and some show a lifetime of interest in a particular field of collecting. When it comes to celebrity collectors, you might be surprised to learn what some famous folks have sitting on their curio cabinet shelves. It is common knowledge that actresses Elizabeth Taylor and Jennifer Aniston both collected antique and vintage jewelry, but did you know that all types of objects are collected by the famous few. Here are some fasciscrimshaw, circa 19th Century, whale tooth nating collections of the rich and famous. PRINCESS DIANA The late Princess Diana (nee Spencer) was an avid collector and one that adorned her private spaces with her collections. Known adoringly as The People’s Princess following her untimely death, Princess Diana was an international advocate for the less fortunate in addition to being a devoted mother and member of the British royal family. According to a top member of Princess Diana’s professional staff, Patrick Jephson, whom I interviewed about the Princess’ lifelong collecting interests when we were both keynote speakers together recently, the Princess collected hand-painted Herend porcelain figurines from Hungary. According to Jephson, Princess Diana’s private sitting room and personal office at Kensington Palace were adorned with the collectible figurines in the form of bunny rabbits and other animals. It is fitting that in 2013, Hungary presented a Herend porcelain set as the official gift to the newborn British Crown Prince George, grandson of Princess Diana.

JAY-Z Musician and producer, Jay-Z is certainly a horologist or someone with an interest in horology or time keeping. Jay-Z has an impressive collection of wrist watches including an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar Skeleton in 18 karat yellow gold. This is one of many fine wrist watches that would certainly make other horology collectors jealous. This particular watch from Jay-Z’s collection features automatic movement, perpetual calendar, moon phase, 18 karat gold with a fixed bexel, etc. The price tag is as big as the impact of Jay-Z, born Shawn Corey Carter who is an award-winning American rapper, songwriter and record producer. Some famous figures are major collectors and collect only for collecting’s sake. Of course, some celebrity collectors amass unique objects for sport and fully enjoy the thrill of a quite expensive hunt. Lime Kiln Point State Park L
ime Kiln Point State Park is a 42-acre Washington state park on the western shore of San Juan Island in the San Juan archipelago. The park is considered one of the best places in the world to view wild orcas from a land-based facility. Due to the unique bathymetric properties of the site, visitors on the shore can be within 20 feet of whales jumping out of the water (breaching and spyhopping). The park was the site of lime kilns beginning in 1860, and one kiln has been restored as a public exhibit. The park provides opportunities for picnicking, hiking, beachcombing, orca watching, and tours of the still operational Lime Kiln Light. An interpretive center has displays and activities about orcas and the area’s former lime kiln industry.[2] The park is supported in part by the Friends of Lime Kiln. Volunteers and marine naturalists are often onsite to assist and educate visitors. The Lime Kiln Lighthouse is a functioning navigational aid overlooking Dead Man’s Bay on the western side of San Juan Island. It guides ships through the Haro Straits, and offers tours during summer months.
