LOCAL FOCUS EVENTS THE BIG CAT RESCUE EXPERIENCE, THE FIRST-EVER AUGMENTED REALITY ZOO Now Open. The Big Cat Rescue Experience, the very first Augmented Reality (AR) zoo in the world, is now open at the Westfield Citrus Park Shopping Center. VidPic AR utilizes an app that allows people to point their phones at print images and play videos – experiencing all of the sights, sounds and motion of a video on a mobile app. Visitors can download the free app and then point their phones at any of the big cat posters on the walls. Guests will marvel as they watch and hear big cats virtually leap off the posters and run, play, swim, eat and bathe in this zoo of the future. Located in Tampa, Big Cat Rescue is one of the largest accredited sanctuaries in the world for abused, abandoned or neglected exotic cats. A world record-breaking 885 dogs came out to show off their bandanas and be counted--shattering the previous milestone of 860 dogs wearing bandanas at a single event. Southeastern Guide Dogs’ Walkathons raise more than a million dollars each year to support the lifetransforming programs that arealways provided at no cost. Louis a Oosthuizen and Jason Kokrak came in 2nd and 3rd, respectively. Bubba Watson tied for 4th with Sungjae Im. World #1 Dustin Johnson finished tied for 6th with Jon Rahm and Ryan Armour. Event goers enjoyed the amenities at the tournament, including the new Chillounge concession area. If you havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t experienced Chillounge before, daytime white furniture transforms into lighted colors at night for a festive atmosphere. New to the Chillounge experience is the Silent Disco, where folks have headphones tuned to their own choice of music to dance away to without bothering other people. BELLE OF THE BALL FREE PROM DRESSES. Belle of the Ball Project is a nonprofit organization which provides homecoming and prom dresses to inneed, low-income high school girls. Their mission’s statement is “no girl should be denied the opportunity to attend her high school dance because of financial difficulties.” Belle of the Ball has given away more than 4,500 quality dresses and countless shoes, purses, and accessories to date. Girls are referred by school guidance counselors, teachers, churches, other nonprofit organizations, foster care, the guardian ad litem system, and other civic organizations. The honor system and the girl’s anonymity is respected. Almost 4,000 quality dresses are in inventory. CHASCO FIESTA. Chasco Fiesta takes place in and around the West Pasco area. Its purpose for more than 90 years has been to present a community-minded heritage event for the entire family while also helping local nonprofits raise money. Yes, we all know that the Seminole Hard Rock is the place to go for lively casino entertainment, but the dining options there are also top notch. Some folks say “but I don’t gamble,” and I say think of the HR as a dining destination. We have sampled all of the restaurants there at different times and can attest to the high quality of food and service at all of them. Our most recent dining experience took us to the Rez Grill located on the 2nd floor of the casino, and we were super satisfied with our meals. The decor is comfortable, with muted brown tones and geometric patterns. Intriguing photos of Florida cypress trees adorn the walls, and an inviting bar separates the restaurant from the casino. A nice ambiance, and even though you are just steps away from the casino floor, you don’t Cont... really hear/notice the sounds of slots.

There were four of us dining, and we started off with a very flavorful Wild Mushroom Soup with crème fraîche, croutons, and chive oil, and just couldn’t get enough of the marvelous Benton’s Ham with house biscuits, cherry-pepper jam, and red-eye aioli. The Shrimp were huge, succulent, and served chilled, with rez spice, cocktail sauce, and gringo blanco sauce. We skipped the tasty sounding salad offerings as we had some amazing entrees coming up. Berkshire Pork Chop (jumbo!) comes with toasted farro, with Benton’s ham-bourbon demi, and is amazingly tender. St. Louis Ribs were also fall-off-the-bone tender and we all concurred the pork chop and ribs were the best we’d ever had. Lobster Thermidor was served with frisée, blood orange, pomegranate, sherry béchamel, fontina, and shitake mushroom. That, too, was superb. We all love Brussels sprouts, and the Rez grills them and adds sweet soy glaze, brandy raisins, and sesame. From the superb to the sublime, the desserts are also excellent. We sampled the Chocolate Budino with dulce de leche, soft cream, chocolate soil (that’s what they call it!) and a Lemon Curd with burnt meringue, blueberry purée, and crumble. The food choices are elegant with some up-scale down-home flavors as well, such as cheese grits, fries, and burgers. Drinks are creative, even in the presentation. Sangria comes in a juice-pack style bag so you can take it out of the restaurant with you on to the casino floor. Even if you’re not a gambler, do yourself a favor and don’t overlook the wonderful dining options at the Seminole Hard Rock. You would really be missing out. he pedigree of ‘60s trio Cream – Ginger Baker’s son Kofi Baker, Jack Bruce’s son Malcolm Bruce and Eric Clapton’s nephew Will Johns – are stopping in Sarasota With their 50th Anniversary World Tour, celebrating the extraordinary music and legacy their family members created on the heels of the 50th anniversary since the original lineup’s farewell U.S. tour of 1968. First launched in 2017 to rave reviews in Australia and New Zealand, The Music of Cream performed over 40 shows in 2018 across North America and the United Kingdom. Throughout the extensive multi-media show, Kofi Baker (drums), Malcolm Bruce (bass, vocals) and Will Johns (guitar, vocals) perform songs such as “Sunshine of Your Love,” “Crossroads,” “Spoonful” and “White Room” and tell personal stories, while footage of their fathers and mentors is shown on the big screen. During its short lifespan, Cream was an explosive musical cocktail that provided the super-group blueprint for others to follow. The group’s third album, Wheels of Fire (1968), was the world’s first platinum-selling double album, and collectively they sold more than 15 million copies of their albums worldwide. Not surprisingly, Rolling Stone ranked the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame group (inducted in 1993) as 67th in their ‘100 Greatest Artists of All Time’ list. Apart from an equally brief reunion in 2005 of seven shows at London’s Royal Albert Hall and New York’s Madison Square Garden, Cream retained an almost mythological status in the music world, right up until the passing of Jack Bruce in 2014. This, for many fans, marked the end of an era and an acceptance that there would never really be another opportunity to celebrate the group’s legacy. That is, until The Music of Cream – 50th Anniversary World Tour emerged.

Fresh New Work Spotlights Florida Orchestra Violinist

f a thoroughly modern orchestra wants to make its mark beyond dusting off the busts of Beethoven and Brahms, it needs to perform thoroughly modern music to reflect our own time. In April, TFO tips its hat to the new with Grammy-nominated composer Anna Clyne, who makes her Tampa Bay premiere with The Seamstress, featuring TFO’s own Sarah Shellman on solo violin. Clyne calls The Seamstress an “imaginary oneact ballet’’ and describes her work as follows: “Alone on the stage, the seamstress is seated, unravelling threads from an antique cloth laid gently over her lap. Lost in her thoughts, her mind begins to meander and her imagination spirals into a series of five tales that range from love to despair, and that combine memory with fantasy.’’ She drew inspiration from the short poem A Coat by William Butler Yeats. Composed in 2015, the 23-minute piece is for violin, orchestra and amplified electronics. It’s part of a concert highlighting the influence of women, with guest conductor Gemma New leading TFO in Brahms’ Symphony No. 1 and Schumann’s Manfred Overture. Concerts are April 12-14 in Tampa and St. Petersburg, with a Sunday matinee. Free tickets for kids and teens in advance, for this Tampa Bay Times Masterworks concert.

This exhibition explores the extraordinary life of renowned music promoter Bill Graham (19311991) who helped launch and promote the careers of countless rock & roll artists. As a promoter and manager, he worked with iconic artists including the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Santana, Fleetwood Mac, the Who, Led Zeppelin, the Doors, and the Rolling Stones. It also traces the indomitable spirit of a man brought to the United States as an eleven-year-old Jewish refugee fleeing the Nazis, fueling a lifelong passion and advocacy for social justice. Treasured photographs and artifacts from Graham’s early life and career will be on loan from the Graham family. An installation of “The Joshua Light Show”- the trailblazing liquid light show conceived in 1967 by multimedia artist Joshua White, which served as a backdrop to many Graham-produced shows - will be customized by White specifically for the exhibition. It will be one of several gallery components designed to evoke the sights and sounds of the era.

Sam was forced to flee Germany to Shanghai, China. Inge was trapped in Berlin during the war and was constantly under the eyes of the Nazi regime. After the war they met in the United States and married, beginning a new phase of their lives. Inge saved her Star of David patch, important documents, and a number of pre-war family photographs. ig Cat Rescue is the world’s largest accredited sanctuary devoted to big cats. The nonprofit sanctuary is home to more than 70 lions, tigers, leopards, cougars, servals, caracals, and

he Magritte & Dali exhibit at the Dali Museum is the first time the two surrealist icons have had a solo pairing. Magritte & Dalí takes viewers on a journey from the late 1920s to the early 1940s, the period when the two artists spent significant time together and displayed their works in the same Surrealist exhibitions. Although both had very different and distinctive approaches to their respective paintings, they were equally committed to implementing practices that challenged reality and generated fuller freedom of imagination and experience. Their works also employ several shared themes which are explored throughout the exhibition. Over 30 works are on display including photos of the artists. Visitors will enjoy the special interactive “cloud room” and the opportunity to capture images of themselves intermingled with surrealist icons & symbols. The exhibit continues through May 19, 2019. Collecting American Girl Dolls S

o, you don’t think the millennial generation are saving objects, collecting vintage pieces, displaying antiques, well maybe you should think again. I have been evaluating the collections of 20 and 30 year old collectors for a long, long time. They are seasoned collectors that know a lot about the market for a special, historic collectible called American Girl Dolls. American Girl Dolls were produced by the Pleasant Company and came onto the scene in 1986. The first three dolls captured the background of historical figures in the form of 9-year-old girls living at specific times in American history. The first dolls produced from 1986 to 1991 were character dolls Molly McIntire, Kirsten Larson, and Samantha Parkington. These three original American Girl Dolls are valuable collectibles and attract both adults and children audiences today. The dolls are robustly traded online, at American Girl Doll events and on social media sites. The dolls’ collectors are very active on Instagram showing off their varied customization of the figural dolls, fashion outfits, and books. The values for American Girl Dolls vary based on several factors including condition of the doll body, hair, outfits, and accessories as well as the type of doll and the popularity of the doll’s character and story. Some of the doll characters were featured in television and full-length feature movies making those particular American Girl Doll characters better known and thus, more valuable than other dolls including Samantha, Kit, and Molly. The three original American Girl Dolls were produced by the Pleasant Company prior to the company being acquired by Mattel, Inc. Some dolls have since been discontinued making those particular dolls somewhat rare and typically more pricey and more desirable with collectors. To recognize the American Girl Dolls, collectors have to learn the background of each doll. Arguably the most valuable of the dolls include: Molly, Kirsten, and Samantha.

The Molly McIntire doll represents a 9-year-old girl living during World War II, circa 1941-45. Like all American Girl Dolls, Molly has books and accessories based on her story including eye glasses, skirt, blouse, sweater, socks and shoes. Molly, like other American Girl Dolls, has additional accessories called “Meet accessories” including a purse, wartime Steel penny from 1943, and a picture of her father inside of a locket. A fine example of the Molly McIntire doll is valued in a range between $1,000 to $10,000 in fine condition. Molly is the topic of a line of American Girl Doll books. Also, the character was featured in the American Girl Television Movie entitled Molly: An American Girl on the Home Front which debuted in 2006. Another American Girl Doll of the original three dolls is named Kirsten Larson, a Swedish immigrant living in the 1850s as a pioneer family member in the Minnesota territory. Kirsten has traditional period boots and braided hair looped and tied with ribbons. Based on the related book, “Meet Kirsten Larson”, the character comes with a wooden spoon and a heartshaped amber necklace typical of the girl’s native Scandinavia homeland. In very good condition, Kirsten dolls are actively traded online. The Samantha Parkington doll was in production from 1986-1991. Samantha was an orphan who lived in the late 19th/early 20th Century. Her accessories that impact the doll’s value include a Victorian dress, stockings and shoes, and a large hair bow. When collecting American Girl Dolls, look for historical figure dolls in original condition with styled hair, original outfits, and character accessories, when available. If you think your favorite millennial isn’t into collecting, then ask them if they have an American Girl Doll from childhood. Odds are, they do.
