ANOTHER ACFAS SUCCESS— VEGAS STYLE! Whether you joined us from home or in person in Vegas, ACFAS hit another one out of the ballpark with the 79th Annual Scientific Conference! This year’s meeting looked a little different as a hybrid conference offering both virtual and a limited-capacity, in-person option, but no matter which way attendees joined, they still got the same great educational experience. Annual Scientific Conference Committee Chair Naohiro Shibuya, DPM, FACFAS shares, “While it wasn’t a normal meeting, the energy was there and attendees were very

excited to see their colleagues in person, listen to lectures, participate in discussions and network.” This year’s meeting reached 1,700 attendees with 834 joining us virtually, which ACFAS President Thanh Dinh, DPM, FACFAS notes, “With the addition of the hybrid option for the event we were able to open the Annual Scientific Conference to so many more attendees who may have never been able to attend an in-person conference before. ACFAS 2022 is on track to be a true record-breaking event!" (continued on page 4)
Join us February 24-27, 2022 to help us celebrate ACFAS' 80th Annual Scientific Conference in Austin, Texas! Watch for registration details coming soon!

perspective
LIFELONG LEARNERS The 2021 ACFAS Annual Scientific Conference proved to be “different” in many ways this year. Instead of meeting in February, we elected to move forward with an in-person meeting in Vegas in May, hoping that Covid and mask restrictions would ease. Why would we take this risk? Because we are lifelong learners devoted to the experience of furthering our knowledge for the benefit of our patients. Each July 1 marks a period of great expectations and fear for our post-graduate educators—our residency program directors. This day heralds a mixture of emotions as we welcome our new trainees—wide eyed with fresh enthusiasm—to embark on a course of employing their vast didactic knowledge to treat patients in the clinical setting. As a program director, I am always humbled by the privilege and honor bestowed upon me as I usher these newly minted DPMs into the practice of medicine and surgery. Each year, I observe in awe as these students walk through the doors of our Harvard teaching hospital, ready to work side-by-side with their MD colleagues as they all collectively learn how to care for our patients.
Their eagerness to do their best for their patients is balanced by their recognition of the opportunity and the responsibility they wield as they practice their skills. Fear of failing their patients and fear of disappointing their attendings is a constant worry. But they are not alone because along this educational journey; ACFAS stands alongside these residency program directors and our trainees. ACFAS provided online learning during this unprecedented pandemic. ACFAS supported our trainees to present their research at the always inspiring Annual Scientific Conference. Under the direction of the Post Graduate Affairs Committee, ACFAS again rolled out a highly attended and remarkable Residents’ Day and Residency Director Forum. ACFAS continues to develop programs to ensure all residents have opportunities for hands-on skills training, such as the Arthroscopy Courses and now the Comprehensive Internal Fixation Course. And after three years of training, the blossoming of confidence and skills always makes me proud to bear witness to the transformation. But what is etched into my memory is not the technical performance of

a surgical procedure, but the many times we, together as a team, eased the pain and suffering of a patient. And along the way we laughed a lot. Like the time a resident was so nervous, he attempted to start the surgical incision with the non-sharp side of the scalpel. Or the resident who was so nervous during a case, a small bead of sweat violated the sterile field. Or that resident who likes to sing off key and out loud. And maybe the worse offense, the time a resident put on a country music playlist in the OR. During these three years of training, we became more than educators and trainees. We witnessed weddings, held newborn babies, celebrated fellowship acceptances and new employment opportunities. At the conclusion of these short three years, we became confidantes, sharing inside jokes, knowing glances and becoming colleagues. The transition is snail-like and swift at the same time. It sneaks up on me each year and I while I mourn the loss of the daily, I am grateful for the opportunity. Congratulations Casey and John and all the 2021 residency graduates. And thank you ACFAS for supporting our residents!

ANOTHER ACFAS SUCCESS—VEGAS STYLE! (continued from cover)
We began the week with the virtual preconference programs and keynote speaker ZDoggMD who opened the general session energizing the crowd and officially kicking off the meeting. Throughout the week, attendees accessed a variety of educational sessions featuring more trending topics and the latest in foot and ankle surgery. Poster and manuscript winners were honored at the ACFAS Honors and Awards Ceremony— a full list of this year’s winners is published later in this issue. ACFAS 2021 also included the first International Hallux Valgus Symposium, which brought an international presence to the podium for the

Dr. Dinh applauds not only the success of this year’s meeting, but the attendees as well. “A pandemic did not dampen the scientific content of our speakers, nor the thirst of knowledge from attendees.” She adds, “The responsible and respectful manner in which our attendees conducted themselves throughout this meeting was
We tackled a lot of obstacles this year and were pleased to bring members a new adventure with ACFAS 2021. RESIDENCY DIRECTORS FORUM Achieves Record-Breaking Attendance
COVID may have required the College’s Post Graduate Affairs (PGA) Committee to quickly modify their Residency Directors Forum plans from an in-person event to a virtual one, but the Forum still exceeded expectations among the virtual attendees. With direct interaction and exchange of ideas among peers, the live-streamed webinar presented many vital residencyrelated issues. The day began with sharing survey results and best practices in teaching while having to follow social distancing and reduced number of surgical cases and clinic experiences. Other topics included patient

safety, best practices in fellowship-residency collaboration, diversity, equity and inclusion in healthcare and managing a challenging resident. Legal counsel familiar with complex medical legal issues shared insight on legal ramifications and processes when dealing with the difficult decision of dismissing a resident. Similar to previous years, the Forum concluded with a session allowing representatives from several allied organizations to provide their updates on the new and upcoming changes in podiatric medical education.
Planning for next year’s Residency Directors Forum has already started, and the PGA Committee is working on a list of new initiatives, with milestones in foot and ankle surgery education as a focal point for the current year. Program directors and faculty are welcome to contact PGA Committee Chair Roya Mirmiran, DPM, FACFAS with feedback and suggestions for the 2022 Residency Directors Forum set for February 23 ahead of the 80th Annual Scientific Conference in Austin.

Christine Grossman Award Honoree This year’s Christine Grossman Award was presented to Amber Shane, DPM, FACFAS during this year’s Annual Scientific Conference in Las Vegas. Each year, ACFAS honors the spouse of a Past ACFAS President in recognition of their steadfast commitment and support of their significant other as they serve on the ACFAS Board of Directors. The award is presented by Jordan Grossman, DPM, FACFAS and named for his late wife Christine who served as a perfect model for this honor as a tremendous source of support throughout Dr. Grossman’s career and tenure as president of the College, while she balanced her own career and their family. As this year’s recipient, Dr. Shane exemplifies the true meaning behind the recognition with her own personal
dedication to the College as she gracefully balanced her own career as a foot and ankle surgeon while being the support system and rock for her two children and husband, past ACFAS President Christopher Reeves, DPM, MS, FACFAS. Dr. Shane shares, “Christine Grossman was truly an inspirational woman and this award exemplifies who she was. She supported the Board and her family in any way she could and became such a dear friend to many of us alongside of her. It is an honor to receive this award in Christine’s name.," she adds. Thank you, Dr. Shane, for your continued support and a special thank you to Dr. Grossman for helping us recognize the behind-the-scene heroes in honor of Christine.
