DANCING TOGETHER page 2
perspective
DANCING TOGETHER It was my dream job. I was working at a major Boston teaching hospital, part of a distinguished medical school and privileged to be teaching medical students and residents. As I walked through the New England fall foliage on my way into the hospital surrounded by the grandeur of the medical buildings, I would pinch myself to make sure this was all real. I loved my work. It started off with small events. During rounds, I would be singled out by patients for requests or water and other mundane tasks and often ignored by the other care teams. I was often mistaken for a resident trainee or medical student, but I laughed off these moments, blaming my diminutive size and youthful appearance. Until that day. He was a new patient and as soon as I walked into the exam room, declared he needed surgery. As we started to discuss his symptoms, he abruptly stopped me, looked at me full in the face and yelled “I want to see a real doctor, not some Chinese girl!” I think I stammered out the words that in fact, I was Vietnamese, but this did nothing to quell his rage and anger. He grabbed his coat, glared at me, and stormed out of the room. I sat in silence for a few minutes, trying to stop shaking and reviewing the exact words that came out of my mouth to possibly have
triggered his response. During that day and the days to follow, I would often dissect the interaction, thinking of all the ways I could have convinced him I was worthy of being his surgeon. My enthusiasm for patient care waned. The vigor in my stroll to work felt like an uphill trudge to a place I did not belong, and I felt unwanted, unnecessary and unwelcomed. In those days, it was difficult to articulate the damage racism and bias could inflict on an individual. Instead, many like myself, internalized the rejection and hurt and ultimately, our passion for our work and patient care suffered. Fortunately, as a society we have bravely focused our attention on the detrimental impact racism and bias can inflict and how embracing diversity and inclusion can positively influence our interactions. As originally coined by diversity advocate, Verna Myers, “Diversity is being invited to the party; inclusion is being asked to dance.” While this may be an oversimplification, it provides context regarding how we can begin to understand and address these issues in healthcare. Throughout all facets of healthcare, race/ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, immigration status, physical disability status, socioeconomic level plays a role in representation, acceptance and the sense of belonging.

Espousing diversity in healthcare can lead to cultural competency, the ability of healthcare providers to offer services that meet the unique social, cultural and linguistic needs of their patients. In short, the better a patient is represented and understood, the better they can be treated. Throughout our daily work, patients and their families put their trust in our hands. And by doing so, they deserve to always be treated with the utmost respect and compassion. ACFAS members are committed to providing our patients with the highest level of care. To that end, the ACFAS Diversity Equity Inclusion Task Force has provided a framework to support a culture of diversity and inclusion in our organization. Bold initiatives spearheaded by this task force include grass roots efforts of introducing the specialty of foot and ankle surgery to underserved youth, as well as a new leadership initiative program to provide an open door and equal opportunities to underrepresented groups, which will in turn strengthen the cultural competence of our organization. Let’s dance.

practice management
Crafting the Perfect CV Whether starting out in your career or making a change to a different practice, the curriculum vitae (CV) is the key to making that professional transition. While there are standard templates one can follow, as a foot and ankle surgeon there are ways to enhance your value and maximize the effectiveness of your CV to ensure you’re getting the best opportunities and truly showing the value of your accomplishments. Pennsylvania-based foot and ankle surgeon, residency director, and Fellow member of ACFAS, Ellianne Nasser, DPM, FACFAS shares how to strengthen a CV and what makes her take a second look when reviewing others. Every CV requires the same minimal information, including your name, credentials, current employment information, contact information and a heading, while your cover letter can cover more specifics your CV really serves as an outline for your employment history and accomplishments.
What are the main components of a CV? Here is a rundown of exactly what your CV should include and any detail important to note within each section.
Education: Residency and fellowship should be included here, not as a job, but as part of educational training. Dr. Nasser suggests, “Include any leadership roles you held during this time, including chief resident. This will help to make you stand out.” Hospital affiliations

volume 28 issue 6/7
|
Bibliography: Any abstracts you’ve worked on should be mentioned here and should be broken into segments. “This is a great way for residents to show what they’re presenting even if it is not published yet.” Dr. Nasser adds, “Presenting at a national level is also good to include and a way to stand out.” Manuscripts accepted for an oral presentation should also be listed in this section as well as chapters, publications, editorial or non-peer reviewed articles. Employment: Start with podiatry school through your present role, include any positions with employment, site director, residency faculty, as well as any leadership roles you held. You will want to include anything that will make your CV stronger. Memberships: Include any societies like ACFAS that you’re involved in. Be sure to note if you’re a Fellow or Associate and include any boards you might be a member of and if applicable, include your state society as well. Certifications: Include all board certifications or qualifications depending on where you are in your career. Dr. Nasser adds, “You can also include any certifications from courses you’ve attended, whether it’s the ACFAS Arthroscopy course or any ancillary training obtained.” Lectures: List out any lectures you have given and separate them out by year. References: Depending on what you’re submitting your CV for, you can either list references or include something saying references are available upon request. If you’re submitting to lecture at a conference, it’s not necessary to include them.
Ellianne Nasser DPM, FACFAS Awards or honors: It’s appropriate to include honors or awards if they’re relatable and within an appropriate time frame from when you are submitting your CV. Already have everything listed out, but you’re looking for a way to beef up your CV? Here are some ideas to add more depth to yours.
Peer Reviewer: If you’ve ever been a peer reviewer for any journals, list them out. That’s a great way to ramp up your CV and stand out to future employers. Volunteer Positions: There are many ways to volunteer in this profession while also providing some meaning to your career and self-worth, but also contribute and give back to your career and beef up your CV as well. Scientific Literature Review: ACFAS offers resident participation in Scientific Literature Reviews, which can boost your CV. Following Residency, you can apply to be a Scientific Literature Review Editor as a volunteer position. Dr. Nasser shares, “Lectures are a great way to ramp up your CV and should be kept current and updated often.”

General Pearls Dr. Nasser suggests these general tips to get your CV a second glance.
Organization: Always keep your CV organized. Keep fonts and headings consistent and avoid copy and pasting or choppiness. Make it stand out: In terms of layout, make sure it’s organized, flows well and is easy to read. Try opening it from an iPhone or tablet to make sure the formatting is consistent with each avenue. Substance: Always list any work presented or research you took part in at the resident level. Include details of your residency education, any lectures given, membership of different societies and some kind of board qualification. Proof reading: Dr. Nasser suggests having someone else look at your CV for review and proof reading. “If you’re in residency, have a mentor or program director review it. If you’re already out in the profession always have a colleague or friend review the CV just to have a second set of eyes on it.” What not to include: Don’t include anything at the high school level, whether it’s awards or jobs. Even at the college level, you can include college education but anything additional at the college level isn’t necessary. Dr. Nasser explains, “When looking at CVs we’re looking past anything on the college level in terms of what we want to see.”
While creating a CV can seem like a daunting task, once you lay out your professional career and list out each category, it will practically start to build itself. Always take a look at your professional career and experience and enlist the help of colleagues and friends to make sure you’ve included everything necessary.

Members in Action: Raising Awareness of the Profession What started as an idea between a couple of friends slowly turned into a way to not only raise awareness of the profession but perhaps shape the path of local students. ACFAS Membership Committee Member Steve Jasonowicz, DPM, FACFAS along with Shady Salamon, his friend since residency and a representative for Stryker, traveled to Liberia, West Africa in April 2021 to provide free foot and ankle surgery to a community in need. Always wanting to give back on a larger scale, they were able to connect with a local orthopaedic surgeon in Liberia. With the support of countless individuals but especially Stryker Orthopedics, Steve and Shady were able to share their knowledge and expertise with the local Liberian team. They operated on patients in desperate need without any other access to foot and ankle care. Back in Chicago the trip began a larger conversation between the two wondering how they could make a similar difference in their own community. Dr. Jasonowicz shares, “While it is great to travel abroad, how can we try to help underrepresented or underserved kids in our area?” He adds, “A

lot of these kids aren’t necessarily exposed to different careers in medicine whether it be nursing, podiatry, medical sales reps, etc.” From this conversation came the idea and first school visit on September 8, 2021. Dr. Jasonowicz and Shady partnered with PEAK Chicago, a Chicago organization providing scholarships to students from the city’s most challenging and under-serviced neighborhoods, to provide a medical-focused career day. Along with an OR nurse and scrub tech from his hospital and a friend who is in cardiac medical device sales, the team presented on how each came into their respective careers, education required, typical day and how each of their backgrounds played a part in where they are now. The students also had the chance to take part in hands-on demonstrations looking at saw bones and some of the implants and tools used in the OR. While COVID protocols have made visiting schools challenging, the plan is to keep it going and introduce as many kids as possible to different career paths in healthcare they can take. Not only did the program
dues give you access to our robust education and professional development offerings, practice growth and management tools and our top-rated Annual Scientific Conference. ACFAS 2022 is quickly approaching and promises to be another exciting learning and social event you won't want to miss,
introduce students to podiatry, which many had never heard of, but they were exposed to other options for medical career paths as well. Dr. Jasonowicz shares, “Unfortunately many of the students we spoke with do not know anyone in the medical field. Programs like this provide an opportunity to share our career paths with a community who may otherwise not get a chance.” Interested in getting involved in your area and rolling out a similar effort to reach future foot and ankle surgeons and share how they can begin to consider a career in medicine? Stay tuned—the ACFAS Membership Committee will be introducing a program to do your small part to help grow the profession by providing tools for local outreach to high school and college-aged students. Your role is easy—meet with them, tell your story and offer yourself as a mentor to future foot and ankle surgeons. Watch your ACFAS communications channels for more information coming soon.
