Give Your Research Even More Exposure

JFAS Offers New Open Access You can now publish your research in The Journal of Foot & Ankle Surgery (JFAS) as a traditional subscription article or as an Open Access article. Open Access means readers worldwide, not just JFAS subscribers, will have free, immediate and permanent access to your article through ScienceDirect.com, which in turn leads to more article citations and downloads. Open Access also increases scientific inquiry and collaboration because more readers will see your article. D. Scot Malay, DPM, MSCE, FACFAS, JFAS Editor, notes that many sources

of research funding now require the studies they support to be published as Open Access. “Open Access could improve the chance that your work will be funded,” he says. And when JFAS studies receive widespread exposure and adequate funding, foot and ankle surgery advances and the College’s reputation as the voice of the profession is strengthened. ACFAS members receive a 50 percent discount on the cost for Open Access publication. Visit jfas.org for more information on Open Access publishing in the Journal or to submit your article.

e-Book Puts Arthroscopy at Your Fingertips The first e-Book from ACFAS, Arthroscopy of the Foot and Ankle, combines practical approaches from leaders in the profession with more than 40 videos to show you not only what works in arthroscopy, but why. Accessible from any device, this e-Book brings you inside the mind of the author, giving you an exclusive look at the latest arthroscopic techniques your peers have practiced and perfected. Self-assessments are also included after each chapter to test your knowledge and give you the chance to earn CME. continued on page 7

Always Moving Forward President’s Perspective page 2

perspective

ALWAYS MOVING FORWARD “You must never stand still . . .” —John Wooden, Basketball Coach One of John Wooden’s best messages for sports can be applied to the business of medicine: “You must never stand still. You’re either moving upward a little bit or you’re going the other way. You can’t expect to go upward too quickly, but you can surely go down very quickly. Progress comes slowly but steadily if you are patient and prepare diligently.” When ACFAS sent out its most recent member survey, it asked what we should do to continue moving forward. The overwhelming response, as it has been for years, was to increase, even further, our promotion of board-certified foot and ankle surgeons to consumers, other healthcare professions and the media to garner more patient referrals. For years, we’ve invested heavily in consumer education (FootHealthFacts.org, our consumer PR campaign, etc.), so we decided to launch a significant second public relations campaign aimed at other healthcare professionals. First, we did our research and probed healthcare providers in eight specialties. It was clear we’d have the most success getting our message across with three groups: nurse practitioners, diabetes educators and family physicians. We then retained the national communications firm of Fleishman Hillard to conduct a print and social media adver-

tising campaign, develop a special website and exhibit at trade shows—all with the theme of “Take A New Look at Foot & Ankle Surgeons.” The campaign clearly explains the unique training and surgical expertise we offer to patients, and, most importantly, why these healthcare professionals can feel confident in referring their patients to us. Our research showed that “trust” was a major concern for these referrers. To get a taste of our campaign messages, I urge you to visit TakeANewLook.org, including the video that appears on the homepage. You can download several fact sheets and a “When to Refer Guide” for your own use in building relationships with referring professionals. I had the pleasure of being in our exhibit booth at the recent American Association of Nurse Practitioners conference. Believe me, it was an eye-opening experience! Many of the nurse practitioners who stopped at the booth said while they do refer patients to DPMs, it’s not always for surgical problems. It was energizing to be able to share how we as surgeons can truly help by being both their surgical and nonsurgical partners in their patients’ care. Board Member John Steinberg, DPM, FACFAS, staffed our booth at the diabetes educators conference in August, and Board Member Christopher Reeves, DPM, FACFAS, will staff our booth at the family physicians conference in September.

Now, the rest is up to YOU! Here’s how: Launch your own “Take A New Look” campaign focusing on these three specialties in your hometown. Many of the NPs, MDs and DEs have seen our ads in their own journals and social media. 䡲 Download the documents described above in our Healthcare Provider Marketing Tools section in the Marketing Toolbox at acfas.org/marketing where we have even more information on what makes you a certified and trusted surgeon. 䡲 Make sure your practice information is up to date on acfas.org. Patient referrals are geographically generated from your member profile on both TakeANewLook.org (for healthcare professionals) and FootHealthFacts.org (for patients). 䡲 Become an active member on your hospital medical staff. Join a committee, attend surgical Grand Rounds and M & Ms or offer to lecture at a local or state society. However you choose to educate other healthcare professionals on your unique training and expertise, always heed John Wooden’s advice to “not stand still.” Let’s all work together to encourage our healthcare colleagues and patients to Take A New Look at Foot and Ankle Surgeons and show them what we offer to provide the best patient care possible. 䡲

First Stop on the PR Campaign Trail: Nurse Practitioners Conference ACFAS debuted its national “Take A New Look at Foot and Ankle Surgeons” public relations campaign at the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) conference in San Antonio in June. With nearly 5,000 nurse practitioners in attendance, ACFAS President Sean T. Grambart, DPM, FACFAS and staff capitalized on the opportunity to promote the profession and underscore the value of referring patients to foot and ankle surgeons. Dr. Grambart also met with AANP’s Orthopaedic Group Chair Michael Zychowicz, NP, to discuss how AANP and ACFAS can collaborate on future referral and educational programs. “Take A New Look” also exhibited at the American Association of Diabetes Educators conference in San Diego in early August and will appear at the American Academy of Family Physicians conference in September in Orlando. ACFAS Submits Comments on MACRA The College submitted official comments to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) expressing its concerns with several provisions of the proposed Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015 (MACRA).

surgeons would disproportionately receive a negative payment adjustment. The College has asked CMS to delay implementation for a year and to delay any further measures so physicians can acclimate themselves to the new measures.

The College’s letter to CMS explains why using a foot and ankle surgeon for care is a distinct benefit for Medicare and its beneficiaries. It also highlights how, despite showing this distinct benefit, foot and ankle

MACRA creates two new Medicare payment methods: the merit-based incentive payment system (MIPS) and the alternative payment method (APM). These two new payment systems represent the transition

away from reimbursement based on feefor-service to reimbursement based on quality (among other factors). Physicians will now choose to participate in either MIPS or an APM.
