Dear Parents, Caregivers and Students,

We have had a busy month of hybrid schooling and the uncertainties continue to occupy our minds on a daily basis. With our positive mindsets, we’ve enjoyed a productive start to Semester Two with more face-to-face teaching and learning and a return to sports and after school activities. We continue to work with our committees to prepare for the Council of International School Preparatory Evaluation Domain A report submission on 18 July 2022 and final report submission on 29 August 2022. The final accreditation visit remains scheduled for February/March 2024. We are also working with the International Baccalaureate to prepare for a multi-programme evaluation visit scheduled for 20-22 March 2024. Our self-study questionnaire deadline is 1 December 2023 and the preliminary review documentation submission deadline is 15 September 2023. Our newly formed ASAC Committee continues to promote and coordinate opportunities for our students to participate in experiences like the Music Festival, Photography Competition and the upcoming Esports Tournament. Our Year 13 students continue to receive the necessary support and guidance from Mr. Todd and the DP teachers as they finalize internal assessments and university applications. Graduation planning is well underway and we look forward to acknowledging and celebrating their achievements on Saturday, 4 June. Our Year 11 students will receive further details about Cambridge examinations along with registration details, examination fee information and important deadlines. Students in Years 10, 12 and in the Middle School (Years 7 – 9) continue to do an incredible job of maintaining focus and concentration during hybrid learning. Students are encouraged to reach out to their Advisors if additional support is needed and parents are also encouraged to communicate with Advisors (in the first instance) if their son/daughter is experiencing academic, social, emotional or psychological challenges during this time. Finally, I would like to extend a huge thank you to all of our student leaders who have been working behind the scenes to coordinate Mental Health Awareness Week from 2 – 4 February. Please visit the STUCO Instagram and follow all of the action. Furthermore, the next edition of the student online magazine, SCREAM zine, will be released next month and well worth a read. Sincerely, Shawn Hutchinson Principal

Message from the

VICE PRINCIPAL Dear Parents, Caregivers and Students, It’s been a short month, starting of course with a teacher training day followed by a 4 day week of online learning. As the month of January has progressed we have seen many students getting back to what we might consider ‘normal’ activities with the reintroduction of sports and clubs, so important in building our community back! Talking of extra-curricula activities, what a great month for the artistic and critical creatives amongst us as 8 of our gifted photographers took away prizes from the ASAC international photography competition, fantastic work! We have a few things to look forward to in February, of course, starting with Lunar New Year celebrations on Tuesday, a whole day off school to get some rest, be with family and possibly think about the coming spring and all of the things we should be grateful for. Something the Y13’s will be grateful for is the end of the EE process on February 4th, interesting that it should fall at the end of Mental Health Awareness week! Thank you to the Student Council for organising such an important, worthwhile and enjoyable event. As we bring January to a close, I believe it is also a very important time to look at one of our most important successes over the year so far. It is almost 2 years since we began the journey of online learning and our school community has weathered the stresses of uncertainty on a global scale with great tenacity. As we approach the traditional examination period for Year 11 and 13 students, I would like to thank everyone for continuing to support each other, for being patient and kind when it is most difficult to exhibit those characteristics. Of course, I will also ask that we all continue to try our best to find ways to support and encourage our young people through the most challenging part of the school year. Whatever the instructions from the government may be, whatever course the IBO and Cambridge determine we should follow, please continue to give the all-important smiles and encouragements to these wonderful young people. In school we will continue to make as much time as we can for each individual child, to show them that we do understand they all have different needs and to do everything in our power to guide them towards success. Of course, successful students at one end of the school are absolutely dependent on this kind of continuous scaffolded support through their school experiences, they do not just magically appear because there are exams to pass. Before my teaching career began in 1990, I was a creche worker, I changed nappies and played sleeping lions with two year olds! Eventually I raised three children of my own, so of course I am recognising the whole community when I say well done, well done indeed, and please keep going! Richard Todd VIce Principal, DP Coordinator and University Guidance

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Year 1 During our third Unit of Inquiry, How We Organize Ourselves, Year 1’s explored the central idea ‘services work together to meet the needs of a community.’ Students had opportunities to create their own community model in class. We are now finding out about the different types of community helpers. Students interviewed security guards of ACG in class and learned about their job and also how the services help people. Year 1’s champs are little inquirers that enjoy researching. We look forward in continuing our inquiry in our new term.

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Year 4 For Mathematics, Year 4 conducted an ACG Primary School-wide backpack survey, where students indicated their features preferred in a backpack. For this Data Handling exercise, our students collated data using tally marks, then created a bar graph for each class and one for the whole primary school. Year 4 students were so convincing, that orders came in from some classes for new backpacks! Learning about the different poetry types and their features in literacy, culminated in students creating their own poetry using poetry features of their chosen style. Students chose Acrostic, Free Verse, Diamante, Haiku, Limericks and Cinquain among others. Here are some examples. In Year 4s ‘How We Organize Ourselves’ Unit of Inquiry, students were tasked with creating a structure with straws and connectors, which had to be tall and stable. Collaboration and planning were key, as well as a bit of the competitive spirit. and presented innovative and creative designs. We were also fortunate to hear a presentation from Mr. Mark Ellison (MSHS Design Technology teacher), where we learned about the design process starting from the brief right through to the prototype stage. For their Summative Assessment, students had to identify a problem that their design would solve, how it functioned, test their designs, and explain if their designs were considered sustainable. Our next Unit of Inquiry, ‘How The World Works’ explores structures, and our students enjoyed their provocation of creating a strong bridge out of toothpicks and glue, followed by a weight bearing test to see if it could withstand weight. Students realized that it takes patience and problem-solving skills to create their bridges. You can see our students planning and gluing the first side of their bridge here.

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Year 6 We in Year 6 started our journey of becoming entrepreneurs focusing on our creativity! We did this by looking into Economics and focusing on our Central Idea, supply and demand drive the production of goods. After covering Needs and Wants, we started to slowly understand the value of money. What every single entrepreneur wants. We learnt about the importance of money and how the economy needs it. We looked at the four factors of production and the history of money as well. Math in Marketing is complicated and its important to understand how our decisions influence the market. We closed our Unit of Inquiry by understanding the importance of safe business practices and how our actions affect the environment.

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Sports and After School Activities Term three sport codes and After School Activities are now up and running at ACG School Jakarta. It has been a very successful first couple of weeks! The volleyball and soccer teams have been particularly popular choices for sport. It’s been great to see our field and court full of tired smiling faces again. There are some new offerings this year in the ASA program. One of those is the Hip Hop Dance Club, with our expert dance instructor Ms. Sarrah Nadya. Word has gotten around on how fun this club is, and more and more new students are joining each week! The coaches and instructors all agree that it’s wonderful to be a part of programs where students are being physically active and pursuing their passions outside of the classroom on our campus again. Even though all programs are under way, families still have the option to register their son/daughters using the following link HERE. Go Wolves! Go Orcas!

Student Council Primary Student Leaders introduced the concept of ‘Play Buddy’ as a way to encourage and build friendships during play time. This was also a great way for our new students to feel welcomed and part of our caring ACG community. It is our 3rd week of executing this idea, which happens every Friday, during snack time. Primary Student Leaders use this time to encourage students to play and build new friendships. Our project leader for Play buddy, Nur Ivy from Year 4 shared, “Play buddy has been really famous now as all students want to join the activities we organize. We try to first have a walk and see if anyone is alone, we then encourage them to join us for a short play. We sometimes even read books to the lower-level students. We hope students will continue loving our play buddy idea. Next week YEAR 6 will oversee the play buddy activity. We also thank all our friends for working together with us during this time.” Look out for Play Buddies every Friday (they will be wearing a special sash).

At ACG School Jakarta, we pride ourselves on having some of the most amazing and gifted students and teachers. What other way to showcase these talents than a fun talent show? However, because of this pandemic, we were unable to present these talents in person. Well, the student council took this into their own hands and decided to host ACG’s first-ever virtual talent show called “ACG’s Got Talent”. Through this, students and faculty were able to record videos without stepping out of their homes. The student council then collected these videos and compiled them into one video. We were able to witness a variety of talents ranging from singing and dancing, to cool athletic tricks. This was a great way to end the first semester and celebrate everyone’s individuality. We hope that this event was memorable for all, and a joyous end to Semester One. If you have not already done so, please check out the video on our ACG School Jakarta YouTube channel!

Wellness Committee Welcome to the second article from our very own ACG Wellness Committee! With the help of Ms Sarrah, this month we would like to draw your attention to the wonderful world of YOGA. Yoga is a mind and body practice and there are various styles of yoga that combine physical postures, breathing techniques, and meditation or relaxation. There are so many benefits of yoga such as refining balance and coordination, boosting self-esteem and confidence. Below are some easy ways that you might like to introduce yoga into your daily life. Why not try these exercises with your family members? All you need is a small space, a mat and some comfortable clothes (oh… and some water!) Thank you Ms Sarrah! Cat Pose (Marjaryasana) How to do this: •

Take a table position using the hands and knees

The knees should be directly

The wrists, elbows, and shoulders should be straight and perpendicular to the floor

Centre the head in a neutral position with eyes looking at the floor

With an exhalation, arch the spine up towards the ceiling

Release the head towards the floor without forcing the chin towards the chest

Return to the underlying tabletop position while breathing in leisurely

Easy Pose (Sukhasana) How to do this: •

Sit upright with legs crossed

Rest the hands on the knees with the palms facing up

Evenly balance the weight across the sit bones

Keep the head, neck, and spine aligned all along

Elongate the spine but without stiffing the neck

The feet and thighs should be relaxed

Retain this posture for a minute

Release and change the cross-legged position

Bow Pose (Dhanurasana) How to do this: •

Lie flat on the stomach, keeping the arms stretched along the sides of the body and head resting gently on the mat

Inhale and bend the knees bringing the feet towards the hips

Grasp the ankles using both the hands

Lift the shoulders, torso, legs, and hips off the floor while gazing straight ahead

Hold the posture for four to five breaths, then lower the knees and release the feet

Rest on the stomach

Wellness Committee Cobra Pose ( Bhujangasana) How to do this: •

Lie face down with the tips of the feet flat on the floor and palms on either side of the body

Pull the shoulders slightly back towards the spine

Engage the abdomen throughout the exercise as it keeps the lower back protected

Lift the body into a cobra pose while keeping the chin up. Use the hands for support, but without putting unnecessary pressure

Hold the posture for 15 to 30 seconds, before gently releasing the body to the floor. This is a good, morning yoga pose for you to practice daily

Tree pose (Vrksasana) How to do this: •

Begin the posture with the mountain pose (standing and raise your hands up), where in the legs are straight, hands at the sides, back straight, and thigh muscles firm

Lift the right foot with the knee out

Place the right foot on the left inner thigh in a position where it feels comfortable

Press the hands together above the head

Gaze at a point about five feet away

Hold the position for 30 seconds to a minute

Return the hands to the chest and then lower the right leg

Repeat it on the left leg

Warrior Pose (Virabhadrasana) How to do this: •

From a standing position (that’s mountain pose for you)

Step one foot back and turn it so the toes are facing slightly outwards

Then raise the arms up, parallel to the floor (one arm in front, the other toward the back)

Bend the front knee and look forward over the fingers

Reverse the feet and do it again on the other side
