Dear Parents, Caregivers and Students,
The value of self-reflection is often underestimated, but true self-reflection can often be transformative, for the teacher, student and parent. Self-reflection can lead to positive benefits including strengthening emotional intelligence, acting with integrity, being more confident and setting clear goals and challenges for the future. Our Year 13 students have had some time to reflect on the past two years and have the opportunity to continue reflecting as the International Baccalaureate confirmed that they would be placed on the non-examination contingency route. Their journey to this point in their school career has been extremely challenging. They have all faced difficulties along the way, but one critical element for their potential success will be their ability to show resilience from setbacks, adapt to change and keep going in the face of adversity. If we are to create an environment where students become resilient, we must allow them to learn from failure, and develop the resources and skills to recover from negative experiences, feelings and challenges. Positive self-esteem, the ability for students to calm themselves, talk about their feelings, see the hopeful and humorous side of problems and challenges, and the know how to act appropriately, are all important. Developing an understanding of what resilience is, how it develops, and what we can do to help our children build resiliency, can result in positive mental health and school success. We need to support students in our care to develop confidence in their own skills, the ability to assess risks, and to have positive experiences. A positive outlook on life is an important part of resilience and helps build healthy optimism and prepare young people for adult life. We are very excited and pleased to announce that we will have a number of new teachers joining our school in 2022/2023. We have spent a considerable amount of time recruiting experienced and qualified educators with international school experience and look forward to welcoming them to our school in August 2022. Please see the two-page spread that introduces the new members of the faculty.

Message from the
VICE PRINCIPAL Dear Parents, Caregivers and Students, As we March towards April we can reflect on a very busy and eventful month. Although we are still waiting for a decision from Cambridge on our examination/non-examination route status, we finally received word from the IB that our request to be placed on the non-examination route had been accepted. This was wonderful news for our Year 13 students who, as you all know have had a difficult time over the last two years. The IB decision gives our teachers and students time to adequately prepare the portfolios of evidence for submission along with their IAs. We wish them all the luck in the world as they prepare for the final part of their journey with ACG School Jakarta and work towards that next step in their lives. Speaking of which, Graduation preparations are coming along nicely. The Dharmawangsa Hotel (Bimasena Club) has been secured on both Friday and Saturday so that we can set up and rehearse on Friday 3 June to ensure the best possible graduation ceremony. Without wishing the rest of the year away, I am very much looking forward to this event that the whole committee has worked hard to make happen. We wish all students the best possible luck in the ongoing examinations! Richard Todd VIce Principal, DP Coordinator and University Guidance Counsellor

Message from the SENIOR TEACHER EARLY LEARNING and PYP COORDINATOR Dear Parents, Caregivers and Students, I hope you are all keeping safe and well and you enjoyed some rest and relaxation over the term break. The beginning of March saw our faculty and student leaders plan and deliver another fantastic Literacy Week across the whole school. Students from all year levels participated in this event to celebrate the wonderful world of books. We had guest parent readers, mystery readers, book reviews, read louds from different cultures and languages, as well as class story writing, book character profiles and using the puppet theatre to retell stories. Of course, the highlight of the week had to be the whole school book character dress up, with a big thanks going to our parent community for helping to make this happen. A huge thanks to everyone involved in making our Literacy Week of 2022, another great success! Our Year 6 students are already well into their PYP topic research, and we look forward to the showcasing of their final projects at the end of April. Please reach out to the Year 6 team if you are willing to offer any expert advice in areas around their ‘Sharing The Planet’ theme. We look forward to sharing more updates with you over the next month. With our Parent Student Teacher Conferences coming up in April, the students in Kindergarten and Primary will be preparing for these over the next few weeks, as they present their favourite pieces of work and guide the discussion by showcasing their learning and progress. Our Parent Student Teacher Conferences also provide an opportunity to discuss how teachers and parents can support their students in achieving their next steps and future goals.

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Year 4 Our last Unit of Inquiry centred around structures and the factors considered when designing them. Students presented designs that took consideration of environmental factors and alternative sustainable materials. We had designs located under the sea, a biomimicry tower, space exploration, bridges, sports stadiums, and restaurants to name a few. For literacy week, Year 4 made sock puppets and wrote creative scripts for the puppet theatre; students incorporated what they learned about procedural texts and followed instructions on making paper peace cranes after reading about Sadako’s peace cranes. We dressed as favourite book characters, illustrated scenes from Ted Hughes ‘The Iron Man’ and analysed how movies not only use key elements such as lighting, music and dialogue to create impact, but expressed beliefs and values in their stories. In math we have been learning about quadrilaterals and the different types of triangles such as Equilaterals, Scalene, Isosceles, Right-angle triangles, and the rules about angles within them. We are also currently learning about key terms in probability and calculating the probability outcomes. Year 4 learned to play the Indonesian Angklung for Music and our Bahasa Indonesia class learned the Saman dance which you can watch here (link).

Learning at ACG School Jakarta Year 5 This Semester, Year 5 has the opportunity to complete a semester long Unit of Inquiry under the theme ‘Who We Are’. We are completing a long-term project to inquire into the Line of Inquiry ‘The connection between acquired traits and the environment’. In this project, students have developed a goal (an acquired trait) that they would like to meet by the end of the school year. We are working on creating plans to meet these goals and the students will be journaling about the experience. We are also working on our fifth Unit of Inquiry under the theme ‘How the World Works’ to explore the Central Idea ‘Humans use scientific principles to understand the world’. Students have been learning about the scientific method through guided experiments. This week, we have been exploring what is rust and our experiment question, “What types of liquids will cause a nail to rust?” Students have created their own hypothesis for each of the liquids which include water, milk, Coca-cola, fresh lemon juice, and canola oil and have applied their observation skills to document changes on an experiment log. From here, we will analyse our data so we can make conclusions about our hypothesis.
