St. Louis IS

Canine Country O

by Debbie Wheeler, Editor

ne cannot necessarily put a “paw” on how long it has taken St. Louis to become the pet-loving community that it is today. However, Active Lifestyles has been birddogging the issue and we’ve dug up some pretty interesting kibbles of canine information. One of the most famous canines, and fondest remembered member of the Lewis and Clark expedition that began in St. Louis in 1804 was a beautiful, black Newfoundland named Seaman. The Newfoundland breed, often referred to as “a gentle giant,” is known for their calm and docile nature and their strength. A huge bronze statue dedicated to Seaman and his famous human companions, Lewis and Clark, can be found close to Eads Bridge, welcoming visitors to the Gateway City on the St. Louis Riverfront. Because of his contributions to the expedition, Seaman managed to escape a less fortunate “dog’s life” that other members of his species commonly endured in those days. On January 4, 1870, St. Louis officially began her history as a pet-loving community with the founding of the Humane Society of Missouri, followed by the Animal Protective Association in 1922. The animal lovers who founded these organizations were adamant that homeless animals deserved a second chance. Their beliefs greatly reduced pet overpopulation and euthanasia over the years,

and led the way for many other pet advocate organizations that now populate St. Louis. One of the best known advocates was Ralston Purina – now Nestlé Purina PetCare, founded in 1894. Ralston Purina expanded over time, becoming a pioneer leader in pet nutrition and care. Today Purina supports programs that enrich pet adoptions, animalassisted therapy, rescue animals and senior-to-senior adoptions. Ask any St. Louisan and they will tell you that you and your furry BFF are warmly welcomed at many places in and around the Pet-lovers Gateway to the West. Several businesses even put out water bowls and offer treats for your pets as you both enjoy our fair communities on foot. With the many St. Louis pet owners who live in areas that do not have yards and want to give their four legged friends some much needed exercise, dog parks have become the “in” place to be. Most of these play areas have dues and rules that vary from park to park that should be checked out prior to visiting. These rules include registration requirements for St. Louis City and St. Louis County dog parks, and some may have restrictions on puppies. aggressive dogs, and the number of dogs you can bring. THEN, there is Canine Country Kennel and Farm! The woof on the streets is this is the best place ever your human can

take you to play in all of St. Louis! If your dog (s) love to run, jump, play, swim and just be with you, then this is the place where you can both have an off the chain (pun intended) experience, relaxing and enjoying the day together! Canine Country is not a park, it’s a country club for dogs and their humans. It’s located just 15 minutes west of Chesterfield, on 223 acres of woods, meadow, creek, lake and fenced enclosures. Featured on the cover of our magazine this month is William (Bill) Dierberg, a family member of the St. Louis owned grocery chain, and owner of Canine Country Kennel and Farm. Dierberg, a retired veterinarian, spent over fortythree years in the business caring for the animals he so loves. Twentyeight of those years, he remembers fondly as the private veterinarian for the St. Louis Police Dogs whose training facility was located next to his business at the time. Bill also raised and trained bird dogs in field trials, and in 1997 his beautiful, National Champion, NAFC Gun Runner’s Far Out was inducted into the Brittany Field Trial Hall of Fame. In 2005 Bill purchased the 223 acres of beautiful rolling farm land that today is Canine Country Kennel & Farm. His purpose was to give back something to the community. His vision, a quiet place for owners and their dogs to just enjoy. A serene place, fenced and safe so that the dogs can run free; to explore, play, walk, run, and train

Men will be just toward men when they are charitable toward animals. -

with their best friends. “The most effective training is done one on one,” says Bill. That’s what Canine Country offers, a relaxing, quiet place where you and your dog can work without anyone or anything diverting attention. There are even homing pigeons at the farm that he trains himself and members use for training their dogs in pointing. Don’t just walk the streets or go to a crowded dog park... St. Louis IS Canine Country! Join this private, pooch “country club” where you and your BFF can leave your cares behind from the daily grinds and activity of the city, and get back to nature. There are three, enclosed, twenty acre meadows and a beautiful lake where your dog can swim and dive off the dock. There are lots of trails to sniff and even an agility equipment playground for your dog and you to enjoy. Oh…AND members can also buy fresh eggs, graciously provided by the resident Canine Country Chickens! Yummm… Canine Country Kennel and Farm is located at 10102 Highway DD, in Wentzville. It’s open seven days a week and kennel service is also available. For membership information or an appointment to view the facility, call 636-398-8558 or visit www.caninecountrykennel.com. Until next month…Be Well, Be Active, and Live Life to its fullest my friends. St. Louis Lifestyles ARE…better after 50!

All my best, Debbie

A STAIR LIFT CAN HELP YOU STAY IN THE HOME YOU LOVE by Jim Campbell

Most people want to stay in their own home as long as possible. However, stairs can become an obstacle to accessing all levels of a home as we age. A stair lift can allow you to stay in your home longer. A stair lift can prevent falls on stairs. Along with transporting people, they are often used to help transport laundry or groceries from one level to another. A stair lift typically comes with two remote controls. This is so one person in the home can ride the lift from one level to another and then send it back for another person to ride. When looking for a stair lift there are some important questions that need to be answered. Will it fit in my home? What is the total cost? Who will install it? How will I get it repaired should there be trouble with it? And what do I do with it when I no longer need it? The best way to make sure that a lift will fit in your stair case is to have a trained technician visit your home to do an evaluation. By visiting your home, the technician will be able to look at the

configuration of your stairs and ask you questions about your needs. They will then be able to recommend the best lift for your particular situation. When looking at pricing for a lift, make sure you account for the total cost of the lift. Prices on the internet often do not include the cost of shipping or the cost of installation. If you need the lift installed, look for a local company that specializes in stair lifts with trained technicians, rather than someone that is using subcontractors or handymen to do installations on the side. This will insure that the lift is installed properly for safe operation. Stair lifts are very dependable pieces of equipment. However, they are mechanical devices and can break down from time to time. This is another reason to pick a local company for your stair lift. A local company will likely provide a warranty on parts and labor for your lift. Should you need service they will be able to send out a trained technician with parts on their truck to get your lift up and

running again. There may come a time when you will have to move out of your home and sell it. Most realtors ask that a stair lift be removed before placing a home on the market. Some local companies such as us here at Options HME will make an offer to purchase the lift back when it is no longer needed. This is something to take into account when considering the total cost of a stair lift. Options HME, Inc. is going into its 10th year of selling and installing stair lifts in St. Louis and the surrounding communities. Give us a call or drop us an e-mail to schedule a free estimate for a stair lift. For additional information contact: Jim Campbell Options HME, Inc. BE THE DRIVING CAUSE IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD! Robin B. Gillespie, St. Louis County Human Services

Marguerite Warren has been a volunteer with the County Older Resident Programs (CORP) for about five years. Today she is taking Martha, an 89 year old senior citizen from Kirkwood, to an appointment with her doctor. Later this month, Marguerite will take Martha to do some grocery shopping and make a stop at the bank on the way home. Martha is unable to drive due to health concerns and she doesn’t have direct access to transportation. CORP has been providing her services for several years now. Without volunteer drivers like Marguerite, she would be forced to use a costly cab service or miss her appointments completely. While CORP customers

are the obvious beneficiaries of the program, Ms. Warren explains that the volunteers have something to gain, as well. “I’ve met a lot of people through CORP, and I enjoy that. Many older people want to stay in their own home but don’t drive. Their children work so it’s hard for them to take time off to drive parents around. This is a way for me to get out of the house and have a little interaction while doing something useful,” she said. “It makes you feel good, doing something nice to help somebody - and they really appreciate it.” CORP is a neighborhoodbased program committed to helping county residents 60 years of age and older maintain a meaningful, independent lifestyle. All of the services are at no cost to the residents, such as non-litigation legal services, computer classes, tax filing assistance, socialization activities and transportation. Through volunteers who provide CORP services, the county senior residents can get to essential destinations, learn iPhone and iPad technology, meet new people while participating in fun social activities and receive lawful services. Volunteers and staff are committed to CORP’s mission statement that reads: Making a difference through

a wide range of services that allow older adults to live on their own, provided by caring volunteers in your community. CORP is currently funded through the general revenue fund and by donations. Donations help fund mileage reimbursements and volunteer recognition activities. Currently, CORP serves over 5,000 senior residents through a network of nine neighborhood sites and 200 volunteers. CORP transportation volunteers have the flexibility to drive at their convenience. Some drive every day, and some once per week.

Training is provided at no cost to volunteers, and mileage reimbursement is available. Every year, CORP is able to provide transportation service to nearly 1000 senior citizens through the dedication of 125 dedicated volunteers. With the population of St. Louis County rapidly growing older, the need for transportation volunteers has never been so great. For information about volunteering for the St. Louis County Older Resident Programs, please call Robin at (314)-615-4516

AGING IN PLACE - MODIFYING YOUR HOME by Mary Jane Kuhn

As we all get older I’m sure our main desire is to stay in our home as long as possible. We want to be surrounded by the things we love: our pets, our memories, our neighbors and everything that is familiar to us. It’s hard to think about having to move out of the homes we cherish! In this article we are going to give you some great tips to keep you living happily and safely in your home for years to come. I think the best place to

start with any aging-in-place home modification is the heart of the home, the kitchen! The kitchen is where so many of us spend most of our time and making a few simple changes can allow a person to remain at home longer, with more independence. The easiest place to start is your lighting. Replacing older low wattage lights with newer, bright white LED bulbs and adding additional lighting around the kitchen can help when eyesight isn’t what it used to be. Improved lighting can help an older person read recipes and enable them to grasp items with better confidence, avoiding spills and broken glass. The better the visibility in the kitchen, the less risk of injury. A more substantial change but one that might really help, is adding a slide-out workspace at the counter that is wheelchair friendly. Changing out your old sink for a shallower one, 6” depth preferably, helps reduce the need for painful leaning over. Appliances can also be raised or lowered to make them convenient and safe. Adding lazysusans to cabinets can easily help you reach items without having to bend low to find them. Lastly, replacing your faucet

with lever-style hardware will make it easier and less painful to use. It can help make adjusting water temperature easier to avoid burns on fragile skin. The other room in your home where modifications could allow you to age-in-place longer is your bathroom. The simplest way to start making changes on your own is to remove all the bathroom rugs. Rugs around the sink and toilet are the number one cause of falls in bathrooms. There are alternatives to bathmats. One idea is a textured tape around the bathtub for when a person gets in or out. Water on the floor is another major concern, especially if you’ve removed your floor mats. Installing grab-bars in certain areas of your bathroom can make moving around much safer. The biggest changes in the bathroom would require a more major renovation but would be worth the fuss in the end. Installing a curbless shower is the safest way for an elderly person to bathe and can even be made wheelchair accessible. You can have a bench installed and a detatchable showerhead that can be adjusted in height for whether you’re sitting or standing.

Renovating your home might feel extreme but if it helps you live at home safely, for longer, it is well worth the investment and starting out with our do-it-yourself ideas is a great place to start. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT MEDICARE AND TURNING 65 by Dale Poss, Senior Specialist - Licensed Agent When should I sign up for Medicare Part A & Part B? • If you’re already getting benefits from Social Security or the Railroad Retirement Board (RRB), you’ll automatically get Part A & B starting the first day of the month you turn 65. (If your birthday is on the first day of the month, Part A & B will start the first day of the prior month,) • If you’re under 65 and disabled, you’ll automatically get Part A & B after you get disability benefits from Social Security or certain disability benefits from the RRB for 24 months.

What is Medicare? What are my options? What are the differences in... Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplements, Medicare Part D plans? When does enrollment period begin and end?

People are now working Full time past age 65 and should they get Part B? • Employer or Union coverage-If you or your spouse (or family member if you’re disabled) IS STILL WORKING and you have health coverage through that Employer or Union, contact your employer or union benefits administrator to find out how your coverage works with Medicare. This includes federal or state employment, and active-duty military service. It might be to your advantage to delay Part B enrollment. You can sign up for Part B

without paying a penalty any time you have health coverage based on your or your spouse’s CURRENT employment (or a family member’s current employment if you’re disabled). Note: Coverage based on employment doesn’t include:

Initial Enrollment Period: • You can first sign up for Part A and/or Part B during the 7-month period that begins 3 months before the month you turn 65, includes the month you turn 65, and ends 3 months after the month you turn 65. No longer working full time. • If you will not be receiving Social Security benefits at Age 65 and do not have creditable coverage through your or spouse’s current employer or union, that is if both of you are not working. Then its up to you to enroll into Medicare. In most cases, if you don’t sign up for Part B when you’re first eligible, you may have to pay a late enrollment penalty for as long as you have Part B.

TURKEY FRYER SAFETY

TIPS FOR DEEP FRYING A TURKEY THIS THANKSGIVING by Karen Siebert

Those who have tasted deepfried turkey usually say there’s simply no comparison to an oven-roasted bird — turkey out of the fryer is moist, with crispy skin and a beautiful color. And, it cooks much more quickly than a turkey in the oven. But, if you’re not careful, frying a turkey can ruin your Thanksgiving, too. You’ve no doubt seen videos of people accidentally starting fires with their attempts. In some cases, families have even lost their homes.

Here are five tips for cooking a great deep-fried turkey — without doing any damage (except maybe to your waistline): 1. Find a safe place to cook. Don’t ever set up a fryer any closer than 10 feet from your home, garage or any other structure. Make sure the area is flat to keep the fryer from tipping, and never put it on a deck or other flammable surface. Remember, the goal is to cook the turkey, not the house! 2. Don’t use too much turkey. You don’t want to drop a 20-pound bird in your fryer; it’s just too big. Keep your turkey to 12 pounds or less, don’t stuff it, and make sure it’s completely thawed and dry. 3. Don’t use too much oil, either. When it comes to the oil, use something with

a high smoke point (for example, canola or safflower) and do a test with water beforehand to figure out how much you need. Put the turkey in your fryer and fill with water until it is covered. Then take the turkey out and make a mental note of the water line — that’s how much oil to use. Be sure to dry everything completely after your test. 4. Use caution when it’s time to cook. Don’t just drop the turkey into the fryer, unless you want to splash hot oil on yourself (bad) or the burner (even worse). Gently lower it into the oil, and then monitor everything as its cooking. Keep an eye on the oil temperature, the clock, and watch kids and pets so they don’t get too close to the fryer.

5. Be prepared for disaster. If you’re cautious, the odds are you won’t need a fire extinguisher, but you should have one on hand anyway – a multi-purpose model with dry powder. Don’t ever spray water on a fryer fire. If you don’t have an extinguisher, either cover the oil or dump a large amount of baking soda on the blaze. However you choose to cook your bird, we here at Siebert Insurance Agency wish you a happy and safe Thanksgiving! Karen Siebert, General Manager Siebert Insurance Agency, LTD. 767 Gravois Rd. VETERAN’S DAY, NOVEMBER 11, 2016

Veterans Day is intended to honor and thank all military personnel who served the United States in all wars, particularly living veterans. It is marked by parades and church services and in many places the American flag is hung at half mast. A period of silence lasting two minutes may be held at 11am. An Act was approved on May 13, 1938, which made November 11 in each year a legal holiday, known as Armistice Day. This day was originally intended to honor veterans of World War I. A few years later, World War II required the largest mobilization of service men in the history of the United States and the American forces fought in Korea. In 1954, the veterans service organizations urged Congress to change the word “Armistice” to “Veterans”. Congress approved this change and on June 1, 1954, November 11 became a day to honor all American veterans, where ever and whenever they had served.

California Pacific SurfLiner

After the holiday hustle and bustle, you may be thinking about getting away as the New Year sets in! Warm breezes and fantastic sights await you in Southern California this January 2017! Southern California consists of the lower half of the state, primarily from Los Angeles to the Mexico (California Baja) border. As winter continues across most of the country, this part of California is ideal for a break from the cold weather, with daytime temperatures in the 70’s. DIRECTIONS Tours is offering this exclusive winter getaway vacation tour. After our nonstop Southwest Airlines flight from St. Louis to Los Angeles, we will transfer to our deluxe accommodations in San Clamente for the next two nights. We will enjoy the pristine Pacific beaches, historic pier and village while here.

Next, this exciting tour package includes The Pacific Surfliner Train from San Clamente to San Diego. This four hour excursion hugs the Pacific coast as you admire the ocean views. The Pacific Surfliner route offers a unique vantage on the Southern California seascape. As they say... to get a closer look, you’d have to be on a surfboard! Once we arrive in beautiful San Diego, we will transfer to our deluxe accommodations for the next three nights! Our hotel is directly on the San Diego Bay and Marina overlooking the San Diego skyline and harbor. The next few days we will enjoy San Diego’s diverse attractions, from beautiful Pacific coast beaches to historic sights. A locally guided city tour will feature many of San Diego’s best architecture, history and current day information. A trip to San Diego would not be complete without time to visit the famous Hotel del Coronado. A beautiful historic hotel, it was originally built in 1885. This wooden Victorian beach resort is located immediately behind the beach, facing the Pacific Ocean. It remains the largest beach resort on the North American Pacific Coast. Another day will include free-time to relax, enjoy the hotel pools and marina or how about taking a whale /dolphin watching excursion or spending the day at the San Diego Zoo! Before departing beautiful San Diego, we will also enjoy a harbor boat cruise and the Seaport Village.

By Tod DeHart

Our tour will then travel through South Cal’s beautiful farmlands. California’s agriculture is the most productive and varied in the U.S.; owing to the climate, topography, complex systems of water delivery, and diverse population of growers. Coastal temperatures are fairly consistent, and can support year-round production of many row crops. Two of South California’s major crops include fruits and nuts. A visit to Bates Nut Farm will highlight this agricultural valley. The tour will then follow the Pacific coast northward to Oceanside, California - “America’s Surf City”. Enjoy a tour of town, the beach and pier. Another stop will be at the Mission San Luis Rey De Francia. Founded in 1798 by Padre Fermin Francisco de Lasuen, the Mission was named after St. Louis IX, King of France, who lived during the 13th century. Our last evening will be near the Anaheim area prior to our morning nonstop Southwest Airlines flight back to St. Louis. Don’t miss out on this incredible winter getaway to Southern Califonia with us! For more details on this tour vacation - see inside this Explore Edition or give us a call.

TIME FOR A YEAR-END INVESTMENT REVIEW Jeff Ponte, Edward Jones Advisor

With the holiday season upon us, you may well be busier than usual. However, by spending a few minutes reviewing your investment scenario of this past year, you can see where you’ve been, where you might be going, and what you need to do to keep moving forward toward your long-term financial goals. So, as you look back at 2016, pay close attention to these elements of your investment picture: • Performance – Reviewing your investment performance over time is important in helping you determine if you’re on track to achieve your financial goals. So, in evaluating how your investments did in 2016, ask yourself some key questions: How did your investments do relative to their performance in past years? If there was a big difference, what might have accounted for it? Were your returns relevant to your long-term goals? In other words, if you have already established

a return rate you’ll need to reach your goals – and you should indeed set such a rate – were your actual returns “on track” to help you make progress toward your objectives? And, just as importantly, were your return expectations realistic, based on your investment mix and the market environment? • Investment mix – If you are a diligent investor following a welldesigned strategy, you probably started out in 2016 with an investment mix that reflects your risk tolerance, time horizon, and short- and long-term goals. But over time, your investment mix can change, even without your having done so on purpose. If you owned a certain percentage of an asset, such as growth stocks, and those stocks appreciated in price substantially, they could take up a larger percentage of your portfolio than you had intended, thereby exposing you to a higher risk level than that with which you are comfortable.

So now that the year is coming to a close, examine your investment mix to see if it needs “rebalancing.” • Contribution levels – Are you taking full advantage of your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan? Specifically, if you got a raise this past year, did you boost your contributions to your plan? The more you invest now, and throughout your working life, the less likely it will be that you have to play “catch up” in the years immediately preceding your retirement. • Mistakes – We all make mistakes in every walk of life – including the way we invest. In looking back over 2016, can you spot some investment mistakes you might have made? Did you temporarily “bail out” on investing immediately after the “Brexit” vote, only to find, a few weeks later, that the markets had soared to record highs? Did you act on impulse and buy a so-called “hot”

stock that turned out to be inappropriate for your needs and risk level? While mistakes like these might be costly in the short term, they can ultimately prove invaluable – if you learn from them. We’re just about ready to turn the page on the 2016 calendar. So, as you review your investment decisions for the past year, try to determine what worked, what didn’t – and what you can do to improve your results in 2017. 7-FABULOUS HAIR CARE TIPS FOR AUTUMN Scott Gardner, The Hair Whisperer

Hair care tips for autumn are just what the doctor ordered, ladies, as it’s about time we start preparing for the new season! And although fall hair care is generally much simpler than the summer one, there are some things you need to do right away. So are you ready to take the plunge, begin your after sun hair care and make sure your tresses welcome the cold season looking shiny, bouncy, soft and restored? 1. Go Warmer: Natural hair is lighter in the summer and slightly darker during the cold season, which means your dyed tresses could definitely use a bit of a touch up. Experiment with caramel and golden hues if you’re blonde as these will give your, by now probably slightly paler, complexion a fresh glow or opt for natural-looking high and low-lights if you’re a brunette. 2. Clarify: From styling products to salt sprays, SPF lotions and leaveins-there are tons of stuff that has been building up on your hair during the summer. And now is the perfect time to get them out and start a new season with absolutely clean, maximally shiny hair. Get your hair professionally clarified

or invest in a salon quality shampoo. Wipe the slate clean and make room for all of those fantastic products that are a part of your autumn hair care routine. 3. Deep Condition: Now, I know this next hair care tip for autumn is not the season’s exclusive, but is definitely something you mustn’t forget once the hot days are gone! Use hot oil treatments and natural oils to restore moisture and elasticity to your sun dried tresses and follow up with a deep conditioning treatment of choice. A deep conditioning session is best done after clarifying and will result in wonderfully restored, soft and supple hair, thanks to a clarifying treatment, doesn’t feel heavy, oily or matted. 4. Dust: Split ends are definitely not something you should take with you into next season so book an appointment with your stylist and have this taken care of. You can opt for a full haircut touch-up in case you’ve been skipping your hair appointments all summer or just have it dusted. This last one is a great option as it involves cutting only the teeny-tiniest length of hair, giving you that nice groomed, freshly-cut look without significantly affecting your length.

5. Frizz Proof: Cold…well we can handle the cold but rain and that crazy frizz that follows are definitely not on any girl’s list of things to love autumn for! And while you can still mask the bulk of it by opting for a beachy wave style, your post summer hair care should definitely involve a good anti-frizz product or care routine. 6. Moisturizing... definitely needs to find its place in your fall hair care too as wind, heating and blow-drying can take a toll on your hair. Add sweaters, turtlenecks and faux fur collars to the equation and you’ll be driven mad with hair static. Luckily, all of this can be avoided with nothing more than a proper moisturizing treatment once in a while. You can opt for a DIY mask or deep conditioner to use each week or every other week. You can also consider a moisturizing shampoo & leave-in conditioner to avoid the hassle and make sure your hair gets everything it needs even when you’re super busy. 7. Massage: Out with the old, in with the new! If you happen to be shedding like a cat around this time, too, you should pay close attention to this last one on my hair care tips for autumn. Get your boar bristle brush, essential oil mixture

of choice/scalp massager ready and be sure to use it at least once every 2-3 days. A relaxing 10 to 15 minute massage will increase the blood circulation in your scalp, speeding up new growth and give you healthier hair and head in the long run. Don’t get scared if your shedding gets worse as these hairs are, in fact, ready to go and the sooner they do, the better. HEALTHY EATING AFTER 50 - LET’S TALK TURKEY! thirds of a teaspoon of table salt—1,500 milligrams (mg) sodium—is all you need each day. That includes all the sodium in your food and drink, not just the salt you add. Try to avoid adding salt during cooking or at the table. Talk to your doctor before using salt substitutes. Some contain sodium. And most have potassium, which some people also need to limit. Eat fewer salty snacks and processed foods, such as lunch meats. Look for the word sodium, not salt, on the Nutrition Facts panel. Choose foods labeled “low sodium.” The amount of sodium in the same kind of food can vary greatly among brands, so check the label.

With Thanksgiving just around the corner and kicking off the Holiday Season... Let’s Talk Turkey about healthy eating after 50! Should I Cut Back on Salt? The usual way people get sodium is by eating salt. The body needs sodium, but too much can make blood pressure go up in some people. Many fresh foods contain some sodium, especially those high in protein. However, most unprocessed fruits and vegetables do not have much sodium. Salt is added to many canned and prepared foods. People tend to eat more salt than they need. If you are 51 or older, about two

Here’s a tip: Spices, herbs, and lemon juice add flavor to your food, so you won’t miss the salt. What about Fat? Fat in your diet comes from two places—the fat already in food and the fat added when you cook. Fat gives you energy and helps your body use certain vitamins, but it is high in calories. To lower the fat in your diet: Choose cuts of meat, fish, or poultry (with the skin removed) with less fat. Trim off any extra fat before cooking. Use low-fat dairy products and salad dressings.

Use nonstick pots and pans, and cook without added fat. Choose an unsaturated, monounsaturated, or polyunsaturated vegetable oil (such as olive, canola, or vegetable oil) for cooking check the label.

eat. Here are some suggestions: Buy only the foods you need - a shopping list will help with that. Buy only as much food as you will use. Choose foods with plain (generic) labels or store brands—they often cost less than name brands.

Don’t fry foods. Instead, broil, roast, bake, stir-fry, steam, microwave, or boil them.

Plan your meals around food that is on sale.

Keep Food Safe As you grow older, you must take extra care to keep your food safe to eat. It is harder for you to fight off infections, and some foods could make you very sick. Talk to your doctor or a registered dietitian about foods to avoid. Handle raw food with care. Keep it apart from foods that won’t be cooked or are already cooked. Use hot, soapy water to wash your hands, tools, and work surfaces as you cook. Don’t depend on sniffing or tasting food to tell what is bad. Try putting dates on the foods in your fridge. Check the “use by” date on foods. If in doubt, toss it out. Make sure food gets into the refrigerator no more than 2 hours after it is cooked. Can I Afford to Eat Right? If your budget is limited, it might take some planning to be able to pay for the foods you should

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING... A BRUSHSTROKE IN TIME by NiNi Harris, Historian

ST.L UIS

A mural depicting the founding of St. Louis stretches 18 feet across a wall in the Carondelet Branch Library in South City. The colors of the mural are lush, and the scenery of forests with the river in the back ground is mysterious and inviting. A young St. Louis artist painted the mural in 1934. Robert Rigsby had graduated from McKinley High School and studied at Washington University. The Public Works Administration (PWA) paid Rigsby $38.25 a week for two months to paint the mural. The PWA was one of the New Deal agencies designed to put people back to work during the Great Depression. These agencies hired stone masons, iron workers, woodworkers, the men who made brass vents and the craftsmen who sanded terrazzo floors to construct civic buildings in big cities and small towns across the nation. The PWA hired artists to fill these public buildings with murals depicting great events and movements in American history. With $10.00 per month of his PWA pay, Rigsby rented an old barn behind 942 Laurel Street in North City. He converted it into his studio to paint the 6 by 18 foot mural on canvas. So much about the mural is romanticized. The scene depicted took place on February 15, in late winter. The distant hills have shades of brown, but the forest floor is a deep summer green and the lush foliage is tinged with autumn colors. To establish this fur trading outpost on the frontier, Auguste Chouteau is elegantly dressed. The artist has him wearing a tri-cornered hat, a red knee-length coat, and a shirt with ruffled collar and cuffs. A colorful trapper in the scene looks like Daniel Boone wearing fringed leather and a coon-skin cap. A pair of NativeAmericans each have elaborate head dresses with scores of red-flecked feathers. Though the mural is romanticized, it conveys an important message. With the stroke of a paintbrush, Rigsby told citizens that the establishment of this city is significant. He communicated that the founding and entire history of the City is a worthy subject. The mural is also a part of a movement that, by creating murals in civic

places, brought art into the daily lives of regular citizens. Another local example of this movement is a series of extraordinary murals in the Downtown Post Office, on Market Street next to Union Station. Those murals present scenes from the history of the State of Missouri. Many of these great murals across the nation are now at risk. They were often painted in small town post offices, which are threatened with being closed. Others are in auditoriums or in other civic buildings that are scheduled to be remodeled or replaced. And all the murals are at least 75 years old and needing a little cleaning and restoration. This makes it all the more important that when the St. Louis Public Library system renovated Carondelet Branch Library a few years ago, they restored the PWA mural. Thanks to that restoration, the colors are as bright and rich in the library mural today as they were in 1934. The mural can be seen during regular hours at the Carondelet Library, 6800 Michigan Avenue, St. Louis, Missouri.

On November 7, 1966, the Daniel Boone Library branch opened at the intersection of Clarkson and Clayton Roads in West St. Louis County and became the highest circulating branch of all St. Louis County Libraries. The building included an auditorium plus two additional meeting rooms, a teen space, two study rooms and the Asian Center, housing many items in Asian languages. In 2012, St. Louis County voters approved a tax increase of $.06 for a multi-year capital improvement campaign called Your Library Renewed. The increase continues to fund new county library facilities, upgrades to existing ones and enhance library programs and services. The first phase of Your Library Renewed is finished, with eleven new or renovated branches having been completed. Phase II which includes the Bridgeton Trails, the Florissant Valley, and the Daniel Boone branches

began construction in October, with the Daniel Boone branch being the last to temporarily close its doors at 5 PM, November 5, 2016. During the construction, the nearby locations that you may utilize to pick up holds and resume normal library service are listed below. If you’d like to send your holds to a branch other than what’s listed, call 314-994-3300. Daniel Boone holds will go to Grand Glaize Bridgeton Trails holds will go to Rock Road Florissant Valley holds will go to Jamestown Bluffs You can return your library items to any SLCL branch except the closed locations, which are expected to be closed approximately 6-12 months. Abby & Paco

Rascal

We are Abby & Paco, both 7 year old Chihuahua mixes. They call us the dynamic duo and we need to be adopted together because of the close bond we share. We are cuddlers and will give you plenty of kisses. We like other dogs but we usually stick together. We are house and crate trained and prefer to sleep together in the same crate.

I’m Rascal, a 2 year old Shepherd mix. I am a very sweet, well mannered and gentle guy! I love to snuggle, house and crate trained, and know basic commands. I’m a tad bit shy initially, but warm up quickly to be a great dog! I like other dogs and love kids too! I’d be a great addition to almost any family!

Brownie

Tara

My name is Brownie, a 13 year old Beagle mix. I would be a great family dog because I’m just an all around happy girl! I know I’m considered a senior dog and I even need to lose some weight, but I would be a great addition to your family. I’m great with other dogs and good with cats and kids. I’m house trained and good either in or out of crate. You can’t go wrong adopting me!

TO ADOPT ONE OF THESE PETS VISIT: www.needypaws.org

I’m Tara, a 2 year old Pitbull Terrier mix. I’m a smaller girl weighing in at only 45lbs, rescued from a hoarding situation, but now I’m a happy girl in my foster home. I’m shy with new people at first, but once I warm up to you, it’s all kisses and cuddles from me. I’m house and crate trained and okay with dogs and cats. I would love to have a home that is willing to take things a little slower with me and allow me to warm up to the new environment and people. I would probably do good with another dog in the home so I would feel a little more secure.

Hello furry friends! My name is Willow and I am a canine amateur advisor. What qualifies me, you ask? I have been homeless, lived in a shelter, survived heartworm disease, and stayed in a foster home. I have overcome! After all... my advice is free; it won’t even cost you a treat. Woof!

Shaken, Ruby Dear Ruby,

Gnomophobia is a real thing! Contrary to what others say, this is totally a rational fear. Keep your eyes and ears on alert. It’s only a matter of time until the Garden Gnomes team up and attempt to slaughter Dogkind. If you are able, bury him now; you have to get rid of him without delay.

Good Luck, Willow

Seniors Count of Greater St. Louis is a local initiative supported by a coalition of community organizations and eldercare agencies. The mission of Seniors Count is to address the quickly growing gap between the needs of seniors and available resources in our community. Perhaps you have heard of this as the “silver tsunami”; until 2030, the number of people 65 years old and older in St Louis is projected to increase by 15,000 every year. In the next three decades, the number of people in that senior set will jump by 77 percent; almost 300,000 people. Census figures from 2014 show the St Louis area had the eighth highest percentage of older people in the country, at 14.9 percent, and by 2045 it is projected that a full quarter

of the region’s population with be 65 or older. One of the most important ways our community can prepare for the aging of our residents, is to create a local resource which will support “aging in place”. This allows people to remain in their homes, independently, as long as possible. Assisted living facilities, group homes, cost about four times more than when someone is able to live independently, in their own home. The biggest needs for this growing group are affordable transportation and accessible housing. Currently, services are grossly under or unfunded. To help accommodate the growing needs, Proposition S has been placed on the November ballot in St. Charles County, St. Louis County, and St. Louis City to establish a Senior Citizen’s Service Fund. What’s at stake if we fail to act? Currently there are waiting lists for services such as Meals on Wheels and senior transportation. Waitlists for respite caregivers cannot even be established as the Alzheimer’s Association is out of

funds for this program within the first two weeks of the year, due to the high demand for respite care services. A Senior Citizen’s Service Fund is a viable solution to some of these issues. Passing Proposition S would give counties an ongoing resource to draw funds from to distribute to senior service providers in order to expand the reach of services. How will it work? Proposition S will raise property taxes by $9.50 for every $100,000 of a home’s assessed value (i.e. a $200,000 home will see an increase of only $19 in property tax annually). The revenue raised will be deposited into a dedicated Senior Citizen’s Service Fund, allocated by an independent board to agencies (both for profit and non-profit eligible) for providing services for senior citizens in their homes. This is a proven, cost-effective way to provide for the needs of the senior population. 51 of the 114 Missouri counties have already adopted this measure, as allowed by Missouri law since 1990, and are currently serving their senior populations with these funds. None of these counties with existing Seniors Citizen’s Service Funds are

in the St Louis area. If approved by voters in November, this initiative will improve the ability of our metro region’s three largest counties to better address needs of seniors.
