JUst Dance
by Debbie Wheeler
Dance, whether by yourself when nobody is watching or kicking the sawdust around on the dance floor with a big group of people while line dancing is a fun and health promoting physical activity. But, what IF somebody is watching… You know, the further down life’s road I go, the more I realize that other people’s impressions of how I look or act, honestly, do not matter one whit. For now, I want to live my life every day, per the words of William W. Purkey, dancing, loving, singing and living like it’s heaven on earth! Quite a number of research
studies done over the past few years have shown dance contributes not only to one’s physical health, but to our mental and social health as well. Dancing can be a way to stay fit for people of all ages, shapes and sizes. Many forms of dance are considered an aerobic exercise and in as such can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, help maintain weight control, decrease stress, and result in other benefits commonly associated with physical fitness. In addition, studies have demonstrated a considerable correlation between dancing and psychological well-being. There are dozens of governmental, health, and educational information sites and studies that can be found on the internet, which extoll the benefits of dance for health. Dr. Joe Verghese, professor of neurology and medicine at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, was the lead researcher for a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine. This study found, among the many cognitive and physical activities they conducted,
dancing was the only one of those activities that seemed to help prevent both Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia. In an interview with Fox News Latino, Verghese was noted saying “The participants who danced three or four tiimes a week had a reduced risk of dementia compared to people who didn’t dance at all or danced very rarely,” and he stated, “The risk reduction of dementia in the group [that danced frequently] was 76 percent.” That is a lot of risk reduction, and you can have fun to boot! Featured on Active Lifestyles cover this month are students and teacher Christine DeHart from Dancing Thru Life, an all adult tap, and jazz dance studio located in Ballwin, Missouri. The studio has over 100 women ranging in age from 19 to 80 years young; beginners through professional. Many of these ladies didn’t even begin dance until they were in their 50’s or beyond! Several of them are even competing in the St. Louis Senior Olympics this May. It is such an inspiration to me and other 50
plusers, watching them in awe, as they tap and high kick their way to staying fit and healthy. Not only does this group of Sassy Steppin’ Seniors enjoy this form of fun exercise, promoting their own health, but they dance each year to benefit an annual charity event “Performing for Life” directed and organized by Christine. This fabulous show raises money for the well-deserved Whole Kids Outreach Organization which works to address the unmet health and wellness needs of hundreds of families with young children in rural Missouri. So, even if dancing and exercise are not “your thing” really, many simply cannot resist some sort of toe tapping and movement when the music starts playing. How about you St. Louis? Why not let go and let’s JUST DANCE, like there’s nobody watching!!! Until next month…Be Well, Be Active, and Live Life to its fullest my friends. St. Louis Lifestyles ARE… better after 50!
All my best, Debbie
The Year of The Volunteer WHOLE KIDS OUTREACH OF MISSOURI Established in 1989, the primary purpose of Whole Kids Outreach is to help poor and vulnerable people help themselves. Services and programs encourage lowincome families to become or remain productive, support their families, and contribute to society. Through leadership in the community and responsible stewardship of resources, Whole Health Outreach has developed a range of services for older adults, victims of domestic violence, and families in crisis. Last year, 19 women and 11 children received shelter residential care and crisis intervention services; 105 victims of domestic violence received advocacy services, 239 families received emergency
financial assistance and items essential to daily life; and 203 senior citizens were served through the senior visiting program. Collaborateive partnerships with local churches, schools, health providers, and social service agencies strengthen the services that are provided to residents of these rural counties. New and returning volunteers are welcomed and each is offered a unique learning and social experience. Volunteers are welcomed onto the Whole Kids Outreach property throughout the year for a variety of activities. The length of any given volunteer experience varies from an hour to a whole week, and volunteers can be individuals or groups, young
or old. Each volunteer is acclimated to the expectations of the assigned tasks through a thorough orientation. This orientation also helps connect the service project with the overall mission of Whole Kids Outreach. Volunteers who participate in extended projects (more than one day) have the chance to be involved in a variety of dynamic projects such as: • Service activities with the Whole Kids Outreach grounds and maintenance team. • Recreational activities with children of all ages. • Community outreach activities for Whole Kids Outreach clientele who need help with home improvements to improve the safety of their living
environments. • Camp Whole Kids, WKO’s four-week summer day camp Off-site volunteer opportunities are also available and welcomed. These activities may be as small as running a lemonade stand, or as involved as building this website. For large projects, it is best to coordinate with the Whole Kids Outreach staff up front. If you are interested in volunteering or donating to Whole Kids Outreach, or would like more information, please call them at (800) 760-3259 or go to their website: wholekidsoutreach.org Active Lifestyles Magazine Year Of The Volunteer!

THINGS MATURE WOMEN SHOULD KNOW ABOUT HAIR Scott Gardner, The Hair Whisperer
I believe the secret to looking good at any age is to feel comfortable in your own skin and to find styles that flatter your best attributes and play down the worst ones. Why More Older Women Decide To Go Blonde You may notice older women cover their gray with blonde. This is because blonde hair blends better with gray as it grows in than dark hair does. It’s also because dark hair can emphasize the lines on your face. If you have gone all gray, consider becoming a blonde rather than a brunette. You”ll have to
update your roots less often. One thing to keep in mind with blonde hair is that it can get too light. You always want a bit of contrast between your skin and your hair, otherwise you can look washed out. Because wet hair is a couple shades darker wet than it is dry, you can try this test. Wash your hair and apply a full face of makeup. Comb hair so that it falls like a curtain on either side of the face. If your complexion looks better darker, you may need to go darker. The Great Hair Debate More and more women are deciding to let their gray hair go for many reasons: they have gorgeous gray coloring, they don’t want the hassle and expense of covering up gray or they want to embrace life as it develops, wrinkles, gray hair and all. But many, many more women opt to cover up their gray for fear that the gray makes them look their age (or older). And we are all out to look our best for our age. If a bottle of $11 hair dye can take years off our look, why not? Here’s the deal about gray hair if you are a woman who has it (and studies show the majority of us will have some
gray hair by the age 50): Quit listening to others and go with your gut. If you have gray hair and you like it and you don’t want to bother with coloring it every 4 weeks then by all means keep it. Oh the Woes of Thinning Hair One of the surprising things about getting older is that hair stops growing in some places (your legs) and starts growing in other places (your chin). One other big surprise for women, is thinning hair. Female Pattern Hair Loss (FPHL) occurs in 50% of women by age 50. Another alarming stat is that 80% of all women will experience noticeable hair loss by age 60. If you suffer from excessive thinning hair, there are excellent treatments available for women to slow-down or stop hair loss or even help re-grow hair. Hans Wiemann is a world renowned leader in helping both men and women with their hair loss, offering the latest cutting-edge treatments for your hair thinning and hair loss needs. Hair Rules are Really Just Trends Hair rules are really just a reflection of trends. What’s not popular at the moment (long hair grown past the
breasts) becomes a rule (don’t grow hair below the breasts) that get broken a few years later when it becomes a trend for young women to have long, Woodstockera hair. So keep in mind when you read that you should cover your gray or wear your hair short or grow that pinstripe of gray in your hair out. Women over the age of 50, you really have a lot more options than you may have ever realized. Don’t let your age define you, and what you look like! When you’re ready to make that change, call Hans Wiemann, we have 15- highly trained and experienced licensed hair stylist and colorist offering the latest in hair styles and colors for women and men. We also offer the latest technology in hair restoration for men and women experiencing thinning hair or hair loss. Call Today 314-732-6657 to set-up your Free Private Hair and Scalp Analysis or to schedule a hair appointment with one of our stylist. Explore Oregon This June
Visiting Oregon is magical! It is like no other place in America and features amazing landscapes, cultures and a vibe “all its own”. Oregon is naturally stunning. The state’s unpopulated and rugged coastline features cliffs on the mainland and jutting stone outcrops just offshore. But if you’re looking for a beach, not to worry, Oregon boasts miles of long sandy beaches perfect for relaxing. Visitors enjoy getting up-close and personal with sea life including sealions and otters. In the fall, many visit the rivers leading into
the Pacific Ocean and get a glimpse of the salmon spawning. Central Oregon features amazing backdrops of mountains and volcanic peaks, painted desert panoramas and rich agricultural lands. Oregon’s soil produces rich fruits and vegetables… many being organically grown. Not to mention, Oregon’s amazing cattle farms. The state has become a dairy mecca turning out rich milk and cheeses. The cities of Oregon are truly unique in every form. Built on history and culture, each city has a feel all its own. Portland is the largest city of Oregon and is located on the north border of the state near the Columbia River Valley. The city is known as the “Rose City” because of temperate year-round temperatures, Portland produces brilliant foliage and fauna. The city’s amazing Rose Test Gardens in Washington Park is a must see!
Willamette Valley and National Forest to the south are pristine for nature lovers. Here the earth is “undisturbed” and the varied landscape of high mountains, narrow canyons, cascading streams, and wooded slopes are picture perfect. Douglas-fir, the State tree of Oregon, is one of the largest trees in America and is found alongside old growth Redwoods creating an amazing natural canopy protecting the forest below.
By Tod DeHart Oregon is home to more waterfalls than any other state. Large to small, from north to south, the state’s wild waters are a sight to behold. The state also is home to Carter Lake National Park. Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the country and it is the largest volcano formed lake in North America. Peaceful crystal blue water makes the lake even more stunning. I invite you to join me and DIRECTIONS Tours this June to experience Oregon… It just happens to be my favorite state and for so many reasons! DIRECTIONS Tours OREGON EXPLORER Tour departs on June 11-17, 2017 - see full itinerary and details inside this Explore Section!

Live Happier and Healthier with Travel hand in hand. When leaving home (or work) and adventuring away from “the norm”, we leave our day to day lives and responsibilities far behind. This allows our bodies to reset our biological body clock and synchronizes it with the earth around us. Notably, studies have shown decreased stress levels in people who travel. Reducing the amount of stress over just one week away on a trip, travelers registered lower levels of stress hormones in their saliva.
Travel is proven to be one of the best ways to make your life healthier, happier, stronger and more fullfilled. Actual studies have proven that travel increases well-being, learning experiences, decreases stress levels, and creates memories of a lifetime. In addition, traveling builds stronger relationships, new friendships and connects people to new ideas and cultures. Vacation and relaxation go
It is common knowledge that travel brings people together and builds new and everlasting relationships.
Whether you travel alone, with family, or with friends, a vacation get-away improves and forms relationships and friendships. In my 21 years of travel experience, I have taken joy and pleasure in seeing so many new relationships form and grow while adventuring out. One of my greatest joys is introducing single travelers to new people, which ultimately become lifelong friendships.
Because of this, I decided to create a more affordable pricing package for single travelers with DIRECTIONS Tours! When traveling as a single, one must pay more money in most cases (due to not spliting hotel costs with a traveling companion / spouse). This
leads to higher single supplemental costs and deters many people from traveling alone. So... I went to work with our vendors and negotiated better rates for our single guests. Now, when traveling with DIRECTIONS Tours, single travelers will enjoy our great trips at the same rates of doubles or just a little more. I am proud to say that we are the ONLY travel company in our region that offers this discount program for single travelers! (see details on next page) Worried about traveling alone? Rest assured, you are never “alone” when you are our guests! There are so many great places to explore this year and DIRECTIONS Tours is a great place to start your vacation planning!

CONSERVATIVE INVESTING FOR OLDER INVESTORS Jeff Ponte, Edward Jones Advisor
If you’re a certain age, or getting close to it, you might hear something like this: “Now that you’re older, you need to invest more conservatively.” But what exactly does this mean? For starters, it’s useful to understand that your investment 3.5” x 2.5” |and Maximum Font Size: preferences needs will indeed change
over time. When you’re first starting out in your career, and even for a long time afterward, you can afford to invest somewhat aggressively, in stocks and stock-based investments; because you have time to overcome the inevitable short-term market drops. At this stage of your life, your primary concern is growth – you want your portfolio to grow enough to provide you with the resources you’ll need to meet your long-term goals, such as a comfortable retirement. But when you finally do retire, and perhaps for a few years before that, your investment focus likely will have shifted from accumulation to preservation. And this certainly makes some sense. Even though you may spend two, or even three, decades in retirement, you actually have many shorter time frames for withdrawing money – that is, selling investments – from your retirement accounts, such as your 401(k) and IRA. In fact, you may be taking withdrawals every month – and you don’t want to be forced to sell investments when their price is down. Consequently, you’ll 30 wantpta portfolio that’s less susceptible
to market downturns. This means that you may need to reduce the percentage of stocks in your investment mix and increase your holdings in investments that have less growth potential but offer greater stability of principal, such as bonds. If you follow this formula, you will have become a more conservative investor. But this evolution – from aggressive to conservative – isn’t that simple, or at least it shouldn’t be. If, as mentioned above, you are retired for two or three decades, you will have to deal with inflation. And even at a relatively mild 3 percent annual inflation rate, your purchasing power will decline by about half in just 25 years. This is a real threat to retirees, who, unlike active employees, can’t count on increases in earned income to overcome increasing costs of living. Given this reality, you will have to find your sources of rising income in your investment portfolio. One possibility: Dividend-paying stocks, some of which have increased their dividends for many years in a row. Still, like all stocks, these dividend payers can lose value from year
to year, and they can also reduce, or even eliminate, dividends at any time. In other words, they aren’t risk-free – which brings us back to the question of how “conservative” of an investor you can really afford to be when you’re retired. In the final analysis, there’s no simple answer. On one hand, you probably shouldn’t be as aggressive an investor as you were when you were much younger and still working. On the other hand, if you were to primarily own certificates of deposit and U.S. Treasury securities, you might face the prospect of outliving your money. Ultimately, you’ll need to maintain a balanced portfolio that helps you control risk today while providing you with growth opportunities for tomorrow. The City’s magnificent Forest Park is recognized as one of the nation’s great urban parks. Its 1,300 acres combine patches of prairie, savanna and forest with manicured, formal landscape features. Forest Park’s Grand Basin – with its fountains and balustrades below the dramatic hill top setting for the Art Museum – is spectacular. As if the nation’s stellar urban park is not grand enough for bragging rights, St. Louis City’s park system boasts a hundred more parks. Carondelet and O’Fallon Park, both established in 1876, feature undulating landscapes shaded by giant trees. Acres of lakes that are home to flocks of geese are set amongst the rolling hills of Wilmore Park. Victorian follies and fanciful gazebos highlight the landscape of Tower Grove Park – the finest Victorian Park in the nation. There are delightful pedestrian-only parks starting with Lafayette Park established in 1836. Benton Park, Hyde Park, and Francis Park are were designed for strolling, running, playing vintage baseball or tennis. No carriages were allowed in these parks. And today there are no roadways for cars. With so many treasures, it is easy to forget the pocket parks. These small parks are delightful, focal points in our neighborhood landscapes. Pontiac Park, a two acre pocket park, is a few blocks south of Soulard Market in the heart of the historic Soulard neighborhood. Ninth and Tenth Streets as well as Ann and Shenandoah Avenues frame the blocksized park. Low, limestone retaining walls, crafted by workers during the Great Depression, form terraces in the tiny park. Neighbors enjoy the ball field, and have planted beds of perennials. This square of green enhances the surrounding red brick and stone cottages built before the Civil War, and the red brick townhouses from
the late Victorian Era. While Pontiac Park enriches the neighborhood and neighborhood life today, this little park was absolutely critical to the quality of life for Soulard residents during the early 20th century. The City of St. Louis purchased the block, mostly an abandoned brewery site, in 1908. The small piece of premium property in the densely developed neighborhood cost almost $95,000. At that time the neighborhood, now called Soulard, was one of the most crowded neighborhoods in the United States. Germans, Poles, Hungarians, Austrians, Croatians, Slovaks and Bohemians filled the neighborhood tenements and worked in the neighborhood factories. Large families were crowded into three room flats. Space for children to play was critical. The City not only purchased land for playground parks like Pontiac Park and Soulard Playground (next to the market), the City developed playground programs and activities. The importance and success of these small parks is evidenced by their use. The attendance at the playground activities at Pontiac Park between April 1919 and April 1920 was a staggering 128,023 children.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING... ST. LOUIS’ PONTIAC PARK
IT HAPPENED IN ST. LOUIS 50 YEARS AGO…
GREENSFELDER PARK IS DEDICATED 1967 The land which is now Greensfelder Park was assembled in the 1850s by William T. Christy and Robert K. Woods of Woods, Christy & Co., which was primarily a dry goods company in downtown St. Louis. Woods and Christy formed a lumber company which logged the area. The property later passed to Christy’s son Calvin M. Christy, who extracted the clay and other minerals on the property for his Christy Fire Clay Company, organized in 1881. Christy sold to Charles Evans in 1893, and Evans is said to have offered a 300-acre tract to the City of St. Louis for use as a park. To enhance the site a dam was constructed in 1895 on the property’s main tributary but was washed away during the spring rains of 1896. Mining continued on the property in the 1920s and 1930s under the Cobb, Wright and Case Mining Company, which went bankrupt in 1938. Missouri’s Conservation Commission then acquired part of the former Christy property for Rockwoods Reservation, but not this portion. The parksite was always forested but suffered from periodic logging
operations, intense grazing from the nearby Allenton stockyards, and fire. The last severe forest fire occurred on Easter 1941. The area was donated to St. Louis County in 1963 by the Trustees of the St. Louis Regional Planning and Construction Foundation. The Foundation was established in 1939 by A. P. Greensfelder, civic leader and chairman of the board of the Fruin-Colnon Construction Company. At the time of his death in 1955 he was chairman of the St. Louis County Park Board, the County Park and Recreation Advisory Committee, and member of the board of trustees for Creve Coeur Memorial Park. The Foundation was intended to provide financial assistance to public improvements, civic projects and engineering programs of education and research. A stipulation of the donation was that a ten-year development program be planned and implemented. Originally called Rockwood Park, the park was officially renamed in September of 1965. The first phase of construction began in 1966 and was completed and dedicated in May 1967. What were you doing in 1967? We would love to know and feature it here in 2017! MEMORIAL DAY is May 29, 2017
Memorial Day, a United States Federal holiday, is observed each year on the last Monday in May. This day is in honor and remembrance of all men and woman who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Memorial Day is also a day to remember all loved ones that have passed away. Traditionally on Memorial Day, the flag of the United States of America is raised briskly to the top of the staff then solemnly lowered to the half-staff position where it remains until noon. At noon, it is then raised to full-staff for the remainder of the day. When the flag is at half-staff, the position is in remembrance of the more than one million men and women who gave their lives for their country. Raising the flag at noon signifies the nation lives, that the country is resolved not to let their sacrifice be in vain but to rise up in their honor and continue to fight for liberty and justice for all. Memorial Day is known to mark the beginning of summer.

20 WAYS TO ENJOY MORE FRUITS AND VEGETABLES 4. Try crunchy vegetables instead of chips with your favorite low-fat salad dressing for dipping. 5. Grill colorful vegetable kabobs packed with tomatoes, green and red peppers, mushrooms and onions.
Building a healthy plate is easy when you make half your plate fruits and vegetables. It’s also a great way to add color, flavor and texture plus vitamins, minerals and fiber. All this is packed in fruits and vegetables that are low in calories and fat. Make 2 cups of fruit and 2 1⁄2 cups of vegetables your daily goal. Try the following tips to enjoy more fruits and vegetables every day. 1. Variety abounds when using vegetables as pizza topping. Try broccoli, spinach, green peppers, tomatoes, mushrooms and zucchini. 2. Mix up a breakfast smoothie made with low-fat milk, frozen strawberries and a banana. 3. Make a veggie wrap with roasted vegetables and low-fat cheese rolled in a whole-wheat tortilla.
6. Add color to salads with baby carrots, grape tomatoes, spinach leaves or mandarin oranges.* 7. Keep cut vegetables handy for midafternoon snacks, side dishes, lunch box additions or a quick nibble while waiting for dinner. Ready-to-eat favorites: red, green or yellow peppers, broccoli or cauliflower florets, carrots, celery sticks, cucumbers, snap peas or whole radishes. 8. Place colorful fruit where everyone can easily grab something for a snack-on-therun. Keep a bowl of fresh, just ripe whole fruit in the center of your kitchen or dining table. 9. Get saucy with fruit. Puree apples, berries, peaches or pears in a blender for a thick, sweet sauce on grilled or broiled seafood or poultry, or on pancakes, French toast or waffles.
10. Stuff an omelet with vegetables. Turn any omelet into a hearty meal with broccoli, squash, carrots, peppers, tomatoes or onions with low-fat sharp cheddar cheese. 11. “Sandwich” in fruits and vegetables. Add pizzazz to sandwiches with sliced pineapple, apple, peppers, cucumber and tomato as fillings. 12. Wake up to fruit. Make a habit of adding fruit to your morning oatmeal, ready-toeat cereal, yogurt or toaster waffle. 13. Top a baked potato with beans and salsa or broccoli and low-fat cheese. 14. Microwave a cup of vegetable soup as a snack or with a sandwich for lunch. 15. Add grated, shredded or chopped vegetables such as zucchini, spinach and carrots to lasagna, meat loaf, mashed potatoes, pasta sauce and rice dishes. 16. Make fruit your dessert: Slice a banana lengthwise and top with a scoop of low-fat frozen yogurt. Sprinkle with a tablespoon of chopped nuts.
17. Stock your freezer with frozen vegetables to steam or stir-fry for a quick side dish. 18. Make your main dish a salad of dark, leafy greens and other colorful vegetables. Add chickpeas or edamame (fresh soybeans). Top with low-fat dressing.* 19. Fruit on the grill: Make kabobs with pineapple, peaches and banana. Grill on low heat until fruit is hot and slightly golden. 20. Dip: Whole wheat pita wedges in hummus, baked tortilla chips in salsa, strawberries or apple slices in low-fat yogurt, or graham crackers in applesauce. *See “Color Your Plate with Salad” at www.eatright.org/nutritiontipsheets for more tips on creating healthy salads This article is Authored by Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics staff registered dietitian nutritionists. ©2017 Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Addy
Dave
Addy is a 3 year old pit bull mix. Good with adults and dogs, not kid tested but would assume she is good. She hasn’t been cat tested. She is house trained and kennel trained. She is finishing heartworm treatment. She loves tennis balls and laying outside. Super sweet and loves to be around people. She has moderate energy.
Dave is a very handsome 8-month-old mixed-breed pup. While we do not know exactly what he’s mixed with, we do know Dave is going to make one lucky family very happy, as he is an easygoing, happy-go-lucky puppy with lots of love to give. He is on the smaller side, and may be up to 25 pounds when fully grown. He gets along great with dogs and is playful with cats. He is likely a herding breed, so he may do better with older children. Dave is crate trained and housebroken and is working on basic commands. So far he can sit in command and does pretty well on a leash.
Basil
Dawson
Basil is a one year old terrier mix. She is an owner surrender due to her anxiety with meeting new people. Once she is familiar with you, she quickly warms up and is the sweetest dog ever! She loves to play and is great with other dogs and cats. She would do best in a home with older kids or no kids at all. She loves to run around outside, so would do best in a home with a fence. She has also completed training at The Watering Bowl and does great with basic commands. She is a moderate energy dog .
Meet Dawson! He is a 7 month old Pointer mix. He is about 45 pounds. Dawson is good with kids and dogs. He is potty trained and crate trained. He is still working on his leash manners. Dawson is a little shy at first but once he warms up he will be your friend for life! He does require a fenced in yard to run around in. Dawson can be shy at first but loves to be pet and is great with kids just need someone to love him.

askwillow@activelifestylesmag.com Dear Willow, I live with an old cantankerous dog named Duke. He says stuff like, “I used to have to go uphill both ways to fetch the newspaper,” and “In my day, I only had one toy and it was a stick.” On and on and on, it never ends. Duke says we are the coddled generation. I’m so bored of him! Needing Earplugs, Luna Dear Luna, You need a mental health day! We cannot help when we were born. Duke obviously has zero chill. Luna, I don’t even have a cell phone, do you? We Millennial dogs are simply adapting to the world we live in today. Tell Duke to stop throwing shade; he’s salty. We Millennial dogs are the future, and we all need to work together. Now, I have to hurry and make sure mommy has ordered my monthly Bark Box.
